Acceptable food. Moderate to high pricing but fair for the large portion sizes. Fantastic ambiance and atmosphere. I have a feeling this place was terrific 20 years ago and is just continuing to rest on its morals.

Just had a birthday dinner with some friends at this restaurant and overall it wasn't too bad. The service was attentive off and on. The portions are definitely big. We ordered the calamari for appetizer and it fed 9 ppl as well as 3 huge entrees of Seafood Pasta, Eggplant Parmesan and Veal with Tomato and Cheese. I only tried the calarmi and seafood pasta and both were great. I'm not sure if I would go there again bc of the service. Other than that, you should definitely go there hungry.

I have no idea why there aren't hundreds of reviews about this place because it is absolutely amazing. They make some of the best chicken parmesan that i have ever had in my life. We go here for my mother-in-law's birthday and I can still taste the goodness 5 months later. Prices aren't too bad either! My only problem with it is that the decor is a bit lacking and that if you don't know the area, it can be a bit hard to find. Don't let that deter you, though, it's worth hunting down! It's probably my favorite restaurant in the Potomac\Rockville area. Seriously, I wish we had one of these in Cleveland.

Reviews are spot on accurate. The food here is just average :/. I really couldn't describe it as good or bad. Our server was very nice and did a great job, but the food was nothing special. Fav thing on the menu personally was the bread pudding.

Italian Cuisine Coming from NYC, you have to realize everything Italian you eat, you are comparing to the restaurants we have in NYC. On the outside the restaurant looks nice and fancy, and when you step inside, I felt that I was a bit underdressed, as the decor looked a bit fancy. However, the atmosphere didn't really work on the food. I can't remember what I ordered, but I ate here a few years ago, but it was a bit salty and didn't taste really good. I've had much better Italian. The portions are quite big, but it just didn't do it for me to come back again. You can try for yourself and see, but I must pass on a second try.

This place was great, but it is now closed down. Go to their new location in Gaithersburg.

I have been to That's Amore for happy hour several times and though I don't love the atmosphere, they drive a hard bargain for the drinks they offer but most importantly the food they carry during happy hour. You can get a real meal and two drinks for under $10!!! And though not on their happy hour menu, their martinis are also absolutely delicious. However, what moved them over the top to a 5 star rating is a recent lunch we had there. We came there to celebrate the engagement of a coworker and had about 30 people show up. I made reservations and we arrived the table was already beautifully set, bread and water just waiting there, all we had to do was sit down. We ordered the family size portions to share and our waitress was really wonderful with helping out with everything. Amazing place for a large group of people, highly recommend it (and for happy hour of course too, try their rosemary potatoes!!).

I recently had Father's Day Brunch at That's Amore and I must I was sorely disappointed. After reading a description of the buffet offerings I decided to go for brunch. "Selections of breads" turned out to be various bagels sliced and cut in half - no bread in sight. "Selection of smoked fish" was a sorry piece of smoked salmon that was picked over and not refreshed. "Antipasti with Italian meats" was a pile of shredded lettuce with a few olives and some tomato. The "carved Roasted Meats" turned out to be a canned ham and chef sliced strip steaks. The sad part of this was waiting ten to fifteen minutes for them to bring out a new strip steak then watching each customer get two thin slices of a steak that is normally a one person entree. Their pasta selection was cheese ravioli with a very sparse tomato sauce. There was also a very thickly crusted quiche offering that apparently no one was eating. While they did have a waffle "station", the attendant kept five or seven waffles under a towel and offered these instead of a freshly cooked waffle. Ever had a waffle that's been sitting under a kitchen towel for ten minutes or more? I must say this was the chintziest brunch I have ever seen. At $24.95 one would expect a little more effort from the kitchen staff. They put out the cheapest items from their menu, charged a fairly expensive price for the offerings and mailed it in. Maybe the restaurant figured Dad's don't care about brunch. This one does and won't return.

Recently went for my birthday. Been to restaurant at least a dozen times. Not sure if new management or not but was not pleased at all. The waiter was awful. Stood there most of the time and when we needed him we had to signal him over. The lady that filled water glasses was refilling drinks and getting what we needed. The portions were very small and food tasted like it was frozen. The grilled and fried calamari was awesome. I always get a chocolate chip cannoli. This time it tasted very sour. May be the last time I go there

They have lightened up the decor and gotten rid of the weird draperies between sections. recent visit both food and service were very good. perhaps making a comeback?

Pathetic Italian food run by non-Italians. "Not Amore" is what this place should be called. iI reported how disgusting the bathroom was...hostess just brushed it off with her bad attitude. I simply asked "why would you keep your bathroom so horrible?" Guess the truth hurt because I was asked leave by the so-called manager. As I left, that same hostess said "you don't have to be here is you don't like it - go back to Italy'. Now worries I went down the road to a true authentic Italian restaurant and got excellent service, great food, and even clean bathrooms! Update 8/24 - As you can see this place is simply trying to save itself. The poor food, service, and cleanliness is no excuse. There are several other authentic Italian restaurants in the area which being Italian, I would highly recommend over this dump.

Seven of us came to That's Amore for our coworker's going away lunch. Our server was very attentive and friendly and our water glasses were always full. Our appetizer and main courses came out slower than we hoped for, being on our lunch break. We ended up being in the restaurant for about an hour and a half. Everyone seemed to enjoy their lunch and the portion sized were so generous that most of us ended up taking a lot home. My lunch, however, was a huge disappointment. I ordered a starter caesar salad and the mussels as my entree. The salad was nice and fresh, but the mussels were definitely past their prime. About half of the mussels did not taste like Ocean City, but were still very dry. Our server noticed immediately that there was a problem with my meal and offered a replacement. Everyone was already almost finished eating so I turned down another entree and asked for some tiramisu (my all time favorite dessert) to go. Well, I just broke into the tiramisu and it is also a huge disappointment. Their tiramisu is 3 lady fingers topped with custard sprinkled in cocoa powder (as opposed to a slice of tiramisu cake). I absolutely do not mind the presentation, it is the lack of espresso that I am upset with. I'm not sure if they forgot it or if they normally serve dry tiramisu, but it is not very good.

I just had a team lunch with my coworkers earlier today, and it was a party of seven. I walked in, and immediately I had this thought that I came to dine at an elderly couples home - think grandma & grandpapa's home with really really dim lighting. Especially when it's a lovely day out, I want to see sunshine out the windows - but maybe that's just me. The table where we were seated, there was no view of the outside. I want to say we had about a 20+ minutes of a wait time between when our order was taken and when the food was bought out. I ordered the shrimp and scallops pappardelle served in a creamy sauce. I thought it tasted average - it neither impressed me, nor did I have any urge to send it back to the kitchen. I didn't order any drinks besides water. Three of my colleagues wanted drinks after the meal. The server took down two orders and turned around to fetch the hot drinks from the kitchen. The third colleague ended up having to ask another server to bring her the drink. All in all, leaving That's Amore, I didn't feel psyched in anyway to return anytime soon.

Good food and a nice restaurant but the real superstar is the bartender Michelle. Talented is an understatement - her drinks are terrific but surpassed only by her warm welcoming personality. She makes everyone feel at home and is encyclopedic in her knowledge of spirits, the menu and humanity. 5++++. PS: Nicole and Logan are treasures too!

I visited First time (5/20/15) for happy hour w/friend. This restaurant is located @research blvd/shady grove rd in Rockville's corporate corridor. That's Amore has a separate entire room for the bar w/seating @ bar & bar height tables. The food is house made Italian. Bar has a nice menu w/small meat, seafood & pasta dishes, appetizers & pizza. We shared mozzarella sticks & Napoli sausage (spicy sausage, sautéed peppers & onions.) House made focaccia bread. Delicious Food. Great neighborhood "feel" & Good customer service. Worth a return visit.

We had a Groupon deal and were craving Italian food. Even though we saw the mediocre reviews, we thought we'd give it a try. We walked into an older outdated restaurant that smelled of cigarette smoke. We were seated immediately and thankfully the scent was only in the lobby. Our server greeted us upon seating and took our drink orders within seconds. The restaurant wasn't very busy. There were only 3 other occupied tables in our dining room, all also using Groupons. Bad sign. We ordered the fried calamari as appetizer. The calamari was delicious. Just right with the batter and not overly seasoned. Came with a simple marinara sauce. The winner. They brought out some warm toasted focaccia and plain white bread. The focaccia was very good. And included an olive oil dipping plate. The white bread was decent. My fiance ordered the meat lasagna. She liked it. It was very filling. The lasagna was stuffed with ricotta and meat. The meat sauce was placed around the lasagna, and no sauce was baked or put in the lasagna. She liked it like this. But I thought it made it really dry and bland. I would have liked to see a little more tomato sauce, at least on the side. I had the lobster fra diavolo which is a spicy tomato cream sauce. It wasn't spicy at all. The lobster wasn't good. It had a sour bitter taste. The dish also had scallops and shrimp. The shrimp was good, but there were only 2. The scallops were also very bitter. I couldn't eat the seafood which was a waste, so thank goodness we had the Groupon. The pasta was so soft and overcooked. I barely made a dent. For dessert, we had the tiramisu. It was light and fluffy. Delicious. So all in all, I loved the appetizer, bread and dessert. As for both entree's, I've had much better. If they could make their pasta al dente, I'd be willing to come back and order a classic pasta dish.

Just had an amazing dinner. Service was great. The hostess greeted us warmly and the server was very attentive. Had wonderful food and can't recommend this place more. If you truly want to feel the love, hit up That's Amore. I am not sure about the bathrooms as the other guy states because they were completely clean when I was there and I have been here a few times.

Joined some friends for dinner here a few weeks ago. Walking in, the first thing you'll notice is the old-fashioned decor and ambiance. This restaurant reminded me of 1990's movies, for some reason, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Moving on to the food. We ordered quite a few dishes, and most of them turned out really well, with a nice and varied flavor palate. I ordered the Giambotto, which i would recommend for pork lovers. The reason why this restaurant gets 3 stars though, is the service. To say the service was slow would be putting it mildly. There were times when we had to flag down the waiter and ask for water, and even getting the check out and processed took around 15 minutes. I would recommend going here only if you have a couple of hours to kill.

I would highly recommend this place for food and atmosphere. When it comes to cleanliness it's very tidy...so I'm not sure where the guy commenting above is coming from. I was at the restaurant and he made racial profiling comments. The owners will not be letting this client in anymore.

The last time I was at this restaurant was my high school senior dinner...let's just say it was a long long time ago! Lol Anyways those of us grew up in the Potomac/Rockville area, That's Amore was the only decent Italian place back in the days. Once I left for college, I never went back...until tonight. When my uncle and aunt suggested coming here for dinner I figured why not, blast from the past! Then I looked up Yelp reviews and got really nervous. Many reviews mentioned bland food...I hate bland food! I had very low expectations when I walked in and this place definitely exceeded my expectations. The gnocchi with pesto sauce is excellent, highly recommend! I would eat that pesto sauce with anything really, delicious. I tried the veal masala too and it was pretty good. My hubby said the Caesar salad was not good, but his veal parm was fine. For dessert I highly recommend the Zuccotto, upside down cake. It was light and not too sweet and just wonderful. My gnocchi and the Zuccotto earned this place a four star in my book! Service was a bit uneven but overall good. Setting is on the more formal side, but you can dress casual if you want. I think I'll not wait as long for another return trip!

THEY ARE SO ADORABLE!!!! I will be coming back and thanks for such a great service....nelly....

I think this place is great. I was skeptical to come because of the bad service reviews, but I had a great experience. I sat at the bar and the place was not very full so I got a lot of attention. I ordered the Giamboto and it was delicious, a lot of food for one. I'd come back if I'm in town again.

Mother's Day at That's Amore was a bust. The restaurant was NOT crowded and service should have been better. Food came out of the kitchen very cold and inappropriately cooked. Portion size has diminished greatly from previous visits. Overall, I wish I had gone elsewhere. Very disappointing!

Saw a rodent scurry across the floor. Disgusting. I could not believe it. I wonder what happens in the kitchen? Food was not tasted because we walked out. Have heard it used to be great at one time obvious to the contrary. I would avoid this place.

Solid place - nothing amazing. The decor is very old school, in a somewhat charming way. The staff were attentive. They did a great job hosting a big group this past weekend. The chicken marsala was a hit - tender and tasty. The salmon was pretty good, probably because it was in an unhealthy cream sauce. The greek and ceasar salads were pretty standard. I liked that they weren't drowning in sauce. They also put together a pretty good dessert plate, with canolis, chocolate cake, and other goodies.

I have lived in the area for quite some time and I had heard good things so it was always on my list of restaurants to visit. My wife gave me a Amazon local deal for Christmas so I was very exited to go. Unfortunately the experience was not so pleasant. We went on a Tuesday night and the place only had one table with 3 or 4 people. Oddly the put us in a a corner table very close to them. Then they sat a group of 6 loud guys that smelled of cigarette smoke. This did not make sense since they had at least 30 empty tables. Our waiter could not remember our drink order and the bar tender had to come over and take our order. After requesting a new table. the waiter told us to just move to another table and then he walked away. He did not offer any assistance with our appetizers or drinks. So we just move everything ourselves. My wife ordered Spinach instead of broccoli with her mean yet they gave her broccoli anyway. The meat lasagna that I had was mediocre at best. I don't think I'll be going back

I worked for that's amore for nearly 4 yrs. I always considered it top of the line. I have recommended them regularly over the years. I ordered delivery via eat 24 and found the quality greatly diminished. I know ownership and management have changed. Maybe that is why I got walnuts instead of pine nuts on my salad and why in the hell are there cranberries? The zabaione sauce with zuccoto tastes like vanilla pudding. The meat sauce was too salty and the meatballs were mealy. This makes me VERY sad!!!! Please return to the old recipes!!!!

Seems to be a restaurant with lots of history in the area. The decor show it also its old and smell that way. Service not good they seemed bothered that we were there. Food was ok taste of marinara sauce was very good. But the ambiance made it difficult to go back.

I use to love coming here, but the manager and wait staff have atrocious service. First they asked us to move over to the table next to us (literally 2 feet away) because a big party was coming in. We then received the arugula salad with the wrong dressing and the manager tried to fight with us that we had eaten part of it. I'm sorry, but last I checked the customer is always right. Plus that is a major no-no and how you loose customers fast! Also they claimed their chicken cacciatore and eggplant parm were delicious, worth the long wait, but both were fair at best. I will never come back here again.

My family and I have been dining at That's Amore restaurant for many years and have been blown away by just how delicious the food has been specially in the last couple years. The management team have added great items to the Happy Hour menus such as pizzas that you can personalize and much more. Since it's located in a condensed corporate area in Rockville, That's Amore really is a great place for company Happy Hours, dinners, meeting for a couple drinks, or even banquets (in their private banquet hall). The service provided is great. Last time we dined there I ordered the Meatloaf with mashed potatoes and asparagus and my goodness was it tasty! Their calamari is really good, tasty lasagna, and a couple other dishes I can't remember the names of. Their portions are large for the price. One would think that meatloaf is simple but this chef really just blew us away and we can't wait to go back.

This is a fairly regular spot for us for Mothers Day and Easter. Easter Brunch today was disappointing....I have always been happy before and have always gorged a bit with a nap soon to follow. Today was average at best with similar pricing as some more notable downtown hotels. Our table in general didn't eat that much. Surprising that the Italian dishes were the ones that were most lacking . Dessert selection very limited as well as selection in general. Belgian waffles were served cold having been made and stacked up in advance. No cream and just a handful of strawberries in a bowl. It was a bit embarrassing watching the whole process. The fruit bar was the highlight, very fresh. That really shouldn't be the highlight of an Easter Brunch. The roast beef was very tasty. The bacon was good :) you really can't go wrong with bacon. Chicken Marsala was pretty good. Other than that the brunch was disappointing with a bland overall taste to many items. Coffee was weak. Wait staff was trained and professional but the buffet staff seems to have been brought in for the day. They were not really familiar with the dishes themselves and how they were meant to be served. Not their fault, they were never trained. Manager asked how everything was and how they could improve...after payment..then simply thanked us for our input and said they would try harder next time. I did not initiate the conversation so it was a bit odd that an offer was not extended to come back for dessert and coffee on the house or something to that effect . Otherwise why ask?

  • Stacey B.

Please keep in mind that I'm Italian, so 3 stars is pretty decent. Bread was fantastic, calamari was very good, but I was disappointed with my entree which was mostly my own fault. I ordered the chicken fettuccine Alfredo and asked them to blacken the chicken because I like the blackened taste and texture. When they couldn't or don't accommodate this they should have just told me, because instead they spiced the chicken with Old Bay seasoning and it ruined the dish. I should have left well enough alone I think.

Had dinner on a Weds evening. While this restaurant had a decidedly retro feel, I had a pleasant meal -- glass of wine, pasta bolognese and a salad. I was happy with my meal. The service was professional and friendly. It was also local -- and not a chain. Is it original? Hardly. Trendy and Au Curant? Not a chance. But I enjoyed myself and that's what counts.

Calamari was very good as was the veal Marsala. Service was quick and efficient. Atmosphere was nice. White table clothes and dark wood make it nice for a celebration dinner. Takes reservations, which is unusual in this area.

Solid 3 stars 3.5-4 stars for the surprising winner - calamari griglia (grilled) Could've grazed on that all night with some kimchi -_- event: teenage nephew's bday count: group of 11+ his dad asked: "What do you feel like having for your bday dinner?" neph's answer: "Italian - I eat american and asian stuff everyday" if you have a hungry food burning teenager who enjoys large mass quantities for consumption can digest 'em all and delights in sharing the feasty portions or if you're hankerin' for some southern Italian dishes give them a try note: all famiglia family portions feeds 3-4 per dish also $18 - $34 selection mainly for teenage bday boy our group minus me (belly won't tolerate cheese) lushed over the timeless fettuccine alfredo creamy cheesy heavy bulgy popular - so they say the winner was the grilled squid or to sound dreamy... calamari griglia - quite fetching smoky grilly bouncy well-marinated can never go wrong with calamari fritte (fried) lightly breaded very flavorful addicting no need for the red sauce nephew favored the mushrooms over the veal in the marsala pick chicken parmigiana was bready but the poultry was moist the family size doesn't include the pasta his pops ordered a few more dishes but these were memorable bro made reservations usual seating inside seems for 2-4 per table good size crowd during the weekend

Solid Italian food at reasonable price but nothing extraordinary. Waiter was overeager with recommendations (which seemed insincere). He also failed at the salad order. I ordered a small greek, BF ordered a small caesar, but we got one large greek. When the caesar finally came out it was rather sub-par. Otherwise, the food was great and they served my favorite wine (Coppola's cab sav). I had the lobster fra diavlo and BF had the pesto gnocchi and both were very yummy. Dessert was a dry tiramisu lacking enough espresso and a very delicious cheesecake.

So, the first time I reviewed this place was in 2011. Since then, my family and I have come here many many times. The more we come, the less delicious it is. Here's my most previous experience: Insalata Romana Chicken Alfredo Meat Lasagna All three dishes, we've had many times. And all three dishes used to be favorites in our family. But as I've seen the more I've come, they've been getting stingier with the portions, the prices are the same. We were especially disappointed in the Insalata Romana because we usually love this salad. But this time, there were barely any pine nuts, they didn't really cut the tomatoes well, and there were barely any chunks of cheese. When we asked for more pine nuts they were going to charge us $2 for it. Overall, I give this place a 2 now. The service wasn't bad it just hasn't been good and has not been good for a long while. The food is bland and I can get better Italian food at a chain restaurant. Sorry Amore, I just don't love you as much as I used to.

Great place for large parties to share food. We went as a family (with our 3 kids) and it was great. Very accommodating about our kids, lots of food choices for both their tastes and ours, impeccable service, and the owner even checked in.

Have dined here several times throughout the years. It's very quaint and more romantic than casual. Almost everything I have had here has been delicious, in addition to being served quickly and in a hospitable manner. I wish all restaurants of this caliber had size options (individual and family-size); the calamari griglia is just too good you wont want to share! Be warned they charge you a cake serving fee of $1.50/per person if you bring a cake. Not a big deal but I wish I had known previously to avoid the hassle so that's why I'm warning you here! That was my only issue, still 5-star quality food and service.

It's a three star restaurant! Don't order anything fancy , food will be overseasoned and not great ! This is no il pizzico and u can't get any lower than that for italian food! However excellent service and amazing desserts ! The upside down cake zuccoto is just out of this world ! Seriously wow! Wow!will definitely be my next party cake!

So...just had to share...for any locals that go to: That's Amore in Rockville, We had received a $50 gift card to That's Amore,, we decided to go out & celebrate our 17 year anniversary that will be this Saturday since the kids are away & he leaves tomorrow. I had checked & knew that the $50 gift card had no expiration date, got it about 17 months ago . So after we had a wonderful meal, they said they will not accept gift card because they changed owners. After my husband went up to register to show the the receipt that we had w/ gift card, they then decided to do $40 instead of $50. When he came back & told me I was like NO WAY! It's not the $10 but the principle! I will now never come back, even though my food was delicious! I spoke w/ the manager on duty & said I don't care if they changed owners, if the restaurant has the same name, you need to honor the full gift card! I will now put this out on Yelp as well as their FB page...my husband thought I was nuts complaining... Food was great, sad that their business practice is poor that we will not come back!

I've loved coming here since I was a child. I actually like the fact that they haven't renovated the place because whenever I come here, I feel like a child again and the memories of my family eating there just flood my mind again! I'm just gonna cut straight to the point...the food here is always great and consistent. I love eating their chocolate cake! Also, for a main course meal, I would highly recommend getting the Rigatoni Alforno. IT IS A MUST HAVE!!! So yummy..

  • Diana C.

OK, not great. Seemed pricey for the quality but the staff was really nice. I did get take out so that may be part of the reason. I was disappointed by the grilled calamari since the other reviews rated it so highly. Fettuccine Alfredo was a good consistency and texture but sort of bland.

I used to visit this restaurant frequently as a child. Our family has always enjoyed the service and great food here. I recently returned with my son and family and we had a wonderful experience. We had great food, attentive service and the owner wanted to make sure we left with a positive experience. I just love this place, as did my family. We will be coming back for years to come! Please try it- order the amore salad, rigatoni alforno and vesuvio potatoes.

Would have given less stars but there is not an option for negative numbers in the rating. Had reservations for 14 to celebrate my father in laws 85th birthday. This was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. Put us at a round table that was pushed against a rectangular table. This left a few of our party with their backs to the others. They had several empty tables that could have been put together to better accommodate the group. The round table was pushed so far into the corner that two people had to get up to let anyone move. The waiter could not get to any of the people in the back to serve them and instead passed stuff over our heads or gave it to us to pass. had to ask waiter 3 times for a pitcher of water so that we could actually have our water glasses refilled. The waiter ranged between rushing us to order our entrée when our apps had just been put on the table to having to be hunted down so we could get the check. He was sloppily dressed, untucked too small stained shirt, looked like he just woke up and came to work. The food-DO NOT order the family plates. Our veal caprese was almost ice cold and cost $34, the chicken parm which we were told would be four pieces, was really only two thin breasts cut in half- about $4 worth of chicken in the grocery for $28. The zuppa de pesce had visible seafood ( not much, though) in it, but absolutely no seafood taste. Other waiters tried to give us food that was for other tables several times. We ordered our salads and apps. The waiter tried to get us to order our entrees at the same time, but we wanted to wait. The minute the salads and apps came, the waiter started pushing us to order our entrees. He was constantly rushing us as if the place was busy, it was not. My sister I law and brother in law had not decided on their entrée because the waiter was rushing us. The waiter insisted on putting in our order and promised to be right back. He was not. Brother in law wanted the fish- they were out of it. Sister wanted the beef entrée. Even though it was put in only ten minutes after ours, they did not bring her entrée until 30 minutes after all the other entrees. I even asked the waiter where her entrée was. He mumbled something and finally returned with my sister in laws entrée. The family style salads were good, if not exceptional. Calamari had tasteless tomato sauce dip, which is the same tasteless tomato sauce that is one the food. Even the big pasta eaters in our group (five teenage boys) did not like the food. Pasta and sauces were said to be mushy and tasteless. If you must order food here, order the individual plates. My father in law had fish and my sister in law had a beef dish that they said were good and actually came with a side and a garnish. The family style plates are over priced, dried out, tasteless rip-offs. You do not get a side of pasta with these "family" orders and you most certainly don't get enough to feed much of anyone's family. They don't even take the two seconds to garnish the platters. Just slop the food on and toss it on the table. We brought a cake that I made for father in laws birthday. We called in advance to ask if we could and were told it would cost $1 per slice to cut the cake and serve it. They brought out plates and a knife, but no silver ware until we asked. Good thing they didn't actually charge us the cake cutting fee because we cut and served the cake our selves. At the end of the night we were given a bill for $408.00 which included an (undeserved) 18% gratuity. We gave the waiter $400 even because we felt he did not deserve the other $8. He came back to my husband and insisted loudly that we had to give him the demanded amount. Really- I thought tips were able to be adjusted at the givers discretion. At this point didn't care enough to argue or call the manager- just wanted to leave this tired worn out 80's restaurant. By the way- the cake was great-oops, never mind I made it, not the restaurant! Synopsis- lousy service, lousy over priced food- will never go back here again.

I really wanted to like this place, but I was a bit disappointed. I ordered the Veal Marsala which is one of my all-time favorites. Aside from the fact that the veal was tough, it was served with spaghetti with tomato sauce! Mixing Marsala wine sauce on the same plate with sweet, red tomato sauce is just plain bad! Not only that, but the food lacked seasoning. I don't usually add salt to my food, but this meal really needed it. The only good thing about this experience was our waiter. What a nice and attentive gentleman. I don't think I'll go back. I'll stick with Carrabba's.

There have been a few restaurants that I visit almost daily, I have to say this restaurant feels like home. The food is always fresh and the entertainment is fun, meaning the bartender Poin. Would recommend

Happy hour with friends. The girlfriends office is right next door and they go here often. Service was on point. For a solo bartender she handled the crowd well. I drank beer, they were cold. Ladies had mixed drinks and cosmos. All were happy. Ordered 5 or 6 apps. All were good. Wings were the kind I enjoy, not lathered in sauce. All in all solid experience.

As someone else mentioned...food with a tude. Four of us went last night since we had a gift certificate/coupon thing. We hadn't been there in forever so I was excited to see how the place was doing (grew up going there for birthdays with the family). My first issue was when I decided I wanted to change my order. Within 2 minutes of ordering I approached our server who was entering our order in the computer. When I asked him if I could change mine he hesitated and then with an attitude was like "hurry up I need to run to the kitchen." I doubt the kitchen had started cooking my meal that had JUST been entered, if that. Whatever. The food was good, better than we had remembered...up until one of our guests had about 2 bites of pasta left. As he ate it we noticed a strand of hair hanging from his mouth. He immediately removed the food from his mouth and placed it on a clean plate. At this point the waiter had come back to ask us if we want dessert. His response as he notices us grossed out at the hair..."no one back there has hair like that." Are you kidding me? Sucks that the food was good besides the hair of course. And sucks even more that we didn't even get an apology...rather we got blamed for the hair. Def won't be returning.

In town for business, so stopped in due to location. I didn't need a gut busting heavy meal (portion wise) but that's the only option. I would have ordered off the lunch menu, but that wasn't an option either...so I ordered a salad, a water and I'm grabbing a sandwich somewhere close. Based on the two complaints I've observed by other guests, I'm glad I didn't order.

I travel across all 50 states and this place is great. Both service and food fantastic. Happy hour is a must. Order off the bar menu and you'll be delighted. Everyone is friendly, polite and the atmosphere is casual.

I went with two friends. We got the fried calamari appetizer which was very good. Not chewy at all. The Solo was more than enough for the three of us. The bread that was served was the only bad part of the meal. It was not warm and not anything special. I can only speak for my entree - Penne alla Vodka. I've had this at other places which only included pasta and sauce. This was much better - peas, tomato pieces, onions, and smoked salmon. The smoked salmon made it especially good. As for price, it was a huge portion so I think it was worth it since I got a dinner and two lunches out of it (solo size). Sure the decor is a bit cheesy but who cares if the food is good.

My father- in -law pasted out today in the Restuarant and the staff was unbelievable on the response called the ambulance took care of everything.....Genuine! He is ok ...just need to tell the world on this wonder experience taken away from a very scary day! I can't wait to go back and try the food considering we never got the chance to eat.....what a great staff!!! :-)

Copious amounts of food at a decent price. The grilled calamari and meat-based sauce pastas are decent.

Food with a tude. The best thing about this restaurant was the iced tea and the bread basket. I think we disturbed our waitresses nap time. HORRENDOUS service! When they put the cake down for my coworkers birthday she practically dropped it on the table and pointed at the rest of us and said "YOU all sing" and walked away. Pardon me? RUDE. Don't appreciate it. The food wasn't terrible but, substitutions could not be made which makes me feel like the food aint so fresh. NO THANKS Rudey McRuderson, you were quite lucky that the tip was included.

DO NOT EAT HERE! Waiter Service was Great! I ordered a Peach martini, the bartender came over personally to see how I wanted my martini made it was Delicious! The Chicken Alfedo was awful, sauce was thin and bland no seasenings. The bread basket and martini was the highlight of the meal.

Lunch is not as good as dinner...actually it's not good at all. I work on the second floor and when I forget my lunch I'll go down stairs and get their side Caesar salad...the actual lunch portion is enough for two people. I love their dressing and how the drench their salad but I love that kind of salad IMO. Lunch sandwiches are awful and fries taste like they've been sitting under a hot lamp for hours. The pastas are alright nothing special that I could make at home or get at Mam Lucia's in Fallsgrove. The dinner is what I enjoy the family style dishes like the calamari (yum) and their Chicken Vesuvias is juicy and garlicy with the thick cut potatoes (this dish takes longer to cook since it bakes.) I love canollis but I don't love them here...they're overly sweet and rich with chocolate...masks the taste of the actual canolli filling and crust. Service here is lame...the place needs a serious renovation...and everytime I walk in feels like I'm under dressed, or maybe they can change that out dates sign outside?

This food does not disappoint though some dishes are more flavorful than others. I would recommend Anything with red sauce or vodka sauce . Been here for "date night" and twice for a large party work brunch. Service was great each time. They aim to please all around.

Excellent service at the bar. Despite it being a busy night, we really felt like special attention had been given to us. The food was excellent. Had the stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer and they are to die for.

Not my favorite Italian joint... I had the shrimp scampi and it was too greasy and salty. Restaurant really need to take it easy on the oil and salt. The service was just ok and it was too dark to see anything

Had the meat lasagna, really like the fact that it was not over-salted. Husband had chicken marsala, liked it very much. Our waiter was very good, although food did not come out of kitchen at same time. Too much dressing on our guests' house salads. For dessert we split a zuccotto, which was a clear winner. My biggest gripe -- and it's significant, given that we were bringing friends there for a quiet dinner and a chance to talk -- is that the restaurant is built in an office building and the wall that it shares with the lobby is made of glass, and there was no escaping the tacky fluorescent light bulbs that shone into the otherwise nicely decorated dining rooms (three dining areas separated by columns and drapes that are drawn back). A real drawback in my book!

My office went there for a lunch. We had a big party, and we pre-ordered the food. The food was just okay. I wouldn't go back on my own though. I ordered the chicken parm. The portion was small, the chicken was only a few ounces big and the pasta was a small portion as well. When I finished my food, I easily could have kept eating. Other people around me thought the portions were small as well. The lunch prices were okay. It cost around $10 for the meal. Overall the food was just okay. I thought the food was nothing special. I wouldn't go back on my own.

That's Amore...good old Italian...not like Mama, but damn nice. For all the Italian places round the area trying so hard to be hip and modern...I give these guys some credit that they're a little old school. Not Brat Pack Old School (Dino, Frank, Sammy...the boys) but they have a vibe that works. Kind of like the 80's ltalian schtick. Food: I really can't complain much here...they do the standards. Lasagna, Parmigiana (veal or chicken), ravioli and chicken marsala with the mushrooms and nice marsala sauce. Maybe, a little sweet, but still good. The dining room is great, but the real action is at the bar during their happy hour. One of the best you're going to get. And for goodness sakes, do yourself a favor and get the grilled calamari. Cooked perfectly where it's soft and plaible, with a wonderful balsamic dressing. Killer here. Service/Staff: They all have that great look that says, "hey, wot you want!" not as a question, but more as a statement, but the attitude is of great service. Bar: Poindexter rocks the place and the drinks are good. All of your standards. Price: Great pricing for great food. Return rate: I'm there and i'll go back. Bottom line: They are your local Italian restaurant that does it right. All that they have to do is update some menu items and they're golden.

For Gaithersburg/Rockville Italian cuisine, there are numerous better places. Honestly, I'd rate an Olive Garden or Macaroni Grill higher than That's Amore. The food just isn't great for the price. I had probably the worst alfredo I've had in years, the bread is not special at all, the spaghetti bolognese tasted like spaghetti with unseasoned burger and Prego that I could make at home in 10 minutes, except it was $15..... I'm not saying it's bad, but that's only because it's near impossible for Italian food to taste poor. But seriously, the local business Mama Lucia's is absolutely the best Italian for the buck in the area. I recommend going there instead. It's a little cheaper and so much better, and the atmosphere is lively, clean, and hip. I got the impression that That's Amore hasn't been renovated since the 70's.

I did not have the opportunity to eat here, so this is solely based on my customer service experience. I went in on Sunday evening at about 5pm b/c all I was in the mood for was a chicken parm sandwich. Upon getting there the cute hostess pointed me to the menu and showed me the chic parm platter. I insisted that all I really wanted was the sandwich. She said that my choice is only a lunch item, but she would go back and ask the chef if he could accommodate only to come back a minute later saying that he wouldn't put the parm on bread. Let me add that the place was empty, so my anger is in that the chef could not see that his place was empty and it was a quick 10 bucks that they would make, on top of the 2 beers I prob would have had at the bar while waiting. This is poor business in my book and it should be noted that this place, in my opinion, has a laissez-faire attitude. I ended up getting a burrito from the Taco Bar instead, that place is accommodating and appreciates my business. Take this review for what it's worth.

Every time I see Vodka sauce on a menu, I cringe and comment about how overdone it is. Yet, every time I end up getting the stupid thing. I am cheap. And easy. I can't imagine coming to That's Amore for a social event. I was stuck at the Marriott across the street so we all met up here for a quick dinner. Not bad. Think Buca di Beppo but just a little classier. Corporate.

A group of us went here today for lunch. The service was terrific and special thanks to our waiter for calling me Miss instead of Ma'am. The food was delicious, the portion sizes were generous, and the price was right. This was my first time eating at That's Amore and I will be back!

We went to That's Amore on a Saturday night at around 8 PM - it was about 70% full - and then quickly died out by 9. Getting a table was not a problem. I'm not from around here - but it made me feel like it wasn't a popular destination for dinner. The decor is a little outdated, even for a place that is going for the "old-school" Italian style. It looks like they haven't updated in 10+ years. The service was very good - and the waiter had an in-depth knowledge of the menu. We ordered the Romano Salad, the Chicken Margarita, and a pasta dish off the specials list (it wasn't that great - so it wouldn't help to remember it anyway). The Chicken Margarita was worth ordering - but wasn't anything spectacular. For dessert - we got a chocolate cannoli and an Italian cake dessert. Both were very good. Overall - I'd say that it was a decent family-style Italian experience. Lighter fare than Maggiano's but not as good.

I went here for lunch with a few coworkers. I got the baked stuffed eggplant, which was actually pretty good. Definitely above average. Our service was quite slow, especially for lunch. It looked to me like there were only 2-3 waitresses covering the whole restaurant. One of my coworkers ordered something with steak in it and it took much longer than the rest of us to come out. We all decided to splurge on a few desserts to share, which sealed the 4 star rating despite the slow service. The cannoli were great, and the tiramisu was also delicious, and a bit different than the traditional tiramisu (in a good way.)

If you want industrial sized proportions of food, you've found it. It's ok; not bad. It's just that they do with a sledge hammer what most places do with a gentle tap. YES, EAT ITALIAN FOOD AND LOTS OF IT!!! Our waiter was ethnic and nice. We did lemoncello at the end and several of our party was sloppy drunk. What can I say?

Great Happy Hour specials and nice sized servings. The food was good, I had the mussels and a ceasar salad. We also had the grilled calamari which tasted like the grill, not my favorite. The bruschetta was great. I will definitely return if I stay in the area again.

I come here for three reasons: 1) Convenience: I work across the street =D 2) Stuffed Mushrooms 3) Dessert: Their desserts are big. If I was a tad bit health conscious, I probably should only eat half or less. But I'm not...so OM NOM NOM NOM *pigs out* The food is nothing to write home about. Well I take that back, the portions are huge! (Seems to be the theme of this review).

Ordered some carry-out on the way home from a friend's house. Their web site had their old menu up which was a bit annoying since I was set on getting a dish that they no longer offer. Food was ready on time. Bartender helping us out was friendly and apologized for their web site's issues (looks like they got hacked). Food was still good after spending 30 minutes in the car. Had the Fettuccine Alfredo and Chicken Margarita. Alfredo sauce was great and not bland like many places, but the chicken was bland (ironic, huh?). The Margarita was great - lots of artichoke, peppers and onions and the chicken was really tender. Bread and oil w/garlic was good.

This used to be one of my favorite places. Now, not so much. I was looking forward to a great dinner and sadly, the food was only ok and the service was pretty apathetic. We were a large party. One of us got food that wasn't just not hot, it was actually cold. It took forever to find the waitress to tell her about the problem and then it took forever to get the situation corrected. The manager came over and rather then apologize, said she wanted to be sure we all had our food so we could eat together, except, everyone had finished by time the replacement dish was delivered. The bill did not reflect their errors, and if fact, they over charged us. Also, we asked to have a dish boxed to take home and they apparently lost it in the kitchen. Then later when we asked for them to bring us boxes to table so we could box some other dishes ourselves, the waitress was offended that we didn't trust her. The food was okay, but it wasn't as great as I remembered it. Will not hurry back.

I had a holiday lunch there sometime back and it was very decent italian food. Recently my friends and I started going there for happy hour and some of the appetizers are just delicious! I recommend the grilled squids, mussels and artichoke dishes. The grilled squids is simply to die for. There's also these gigantic meat balls which are a bit much for me.The portions of the appetizers are very generous for $4-5 you are getting a whole plate full of food. I really enjoy going there for happy hour and the wait staffs are very friendly!

I'm an Italian from Jersey, so keep in mind I'm hard to please. That being said, I went for the first time last night and am definitely a fan. The food, drinks and dessert were very reasonably priced, and it was very, very good. I had the pasta special of farfalle in wild mushroom cream sauce with beef tips, asparagus and squash, and my boyfriend had chicken parm. Both huge, both delicious, and our dessert was enough for four people. Highly recommend!

4-stars says "yay I'm a fan" and I am a fan. We moved to Gaithersburg years ago and the Italian is DC is always extremely overpriced (think fine-dining) or straight chain restaurant. This is neither. The decor is pretty much as described, 80's Italian schtick. But the pictures on the walls are nice. I wish they'd do away with the curtain wall thing in the middle, but maybe it serves a practical purpose. The prices aren't cheap but fair. The wine might be a little overpriced, but if you have a qualm, stick with beer and it'll be fine. I have always had attentive servers and I've been here at least half a dozen times. The place is never busy mostly because the dining room is spacious. Recently I went on a Sunday night for dinner and it was probably 75% full. It does worry me a bit, though, that the crowds are sparse. I'd like to see them stick around. But they also do good business for large special occasions in their banquet room. They also do catering, something I have experience with. We got food from them for our wedding rehearsal dinner at a park. The risotto is very good and so is the vegetarian lasagna. I've had all sorts of things here. The only thing I had that I'd claim "average" was the tortellini. But it wasn't bad. The best part about this place is the desserts. They're huge and they're all excellent. You can come here just for those, really, if you want. Even if you're a picky eater, I can't see how you could be disappointed by the desserts.

In a sentence fragment: Good service, underwhelming food. Our waitress was attentive and pleasant, but the family-sized dishes that arrived were mediocre at best. For appetizers, our Caesar salad was utterly underwhelming and greasy, and our fried calamari was overpowered by its sauce. For dinner, the vegetarian pasta dishes were all right (and the pasta's consistency was fine), but the breaded chicken parmesan dish consisted of chewy, dense pieces of overcooked meat, which is fine if you enjoy vulcanized rubber. I suppose the meat's flavor was all right, actually, but That's Amore's food would benefit from some quality control. I would come here again if the prices were dropped to reflect the food's medium-low quality.

Been a regular here for 10 years now. Food is consistently good abortions more than fair for the price. Red sauce is excellent on almost any offering. Love the giambotto dressed with home made potato chips. Service is sometimes lax but the atmosphere is friendly and social. Great happy hour specials.

This place has baller happy hour!!! And it attracts a very diverse crowd which is what I like - young and somewhat older professionals. Came here for lunch a few months ago and it was decent. But happy hour proved to be way better!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
