You walk in and you know exactly what you're getting: "Bad" "Chinese" food. When I say "bad", I don't mean horrible. I mean the kind that you sometimes crave when you feel fat, lazy, and general self-loathing. The same mood you're in when you decide a medium meatlover's pizza can be considered a meal for one. Also, when I say "Chinese" I mean Chinese and Japanese because this place all that. So yeah. Jack of all trades, master of none. Edit after Business Manager's response: (2015.09.07) The business manager has corrected me by saying they do not serve Korean food. I thought I recalled that they had japchae on their menu and assumed they had other Korean food as well. That was my mistake. I apologize. However I stand by my rating and statement. If you want some Asian food with some fast food guilt, this is the place to go. Three stars. You want more stars? Cook your food in a way that doesn't leave a oily greasy residue in your mouth. Don't blame someone else for your mediocrity. TL;DR: Yelp gives me nothing but a voice. I honestly believe you're a 3/5.

It's been awhile since I visited this location and after this evening's visit, I remember why. Once I reached home with my carry out order, I discovered that half my order was incorrect. I ordered shrimp in tomato sauce, yet I received a simple order of shrimp fried rice. The receipt correctly stated my order, but somehow the message wasn't correctly relayed to the chef. What was received was ok, but not worth the price. Paid $16. for an Orange Chicken and frankly, it was just ok. The restaurant itself is clean, the people seemed nice and the order was prepared quickly, all things that are a plus. But the fact that half my order was incorrect, the food was mediocre and I payed about $30. for two entrees, I can't give it more than 2 stars.

Very casual place, expensive for Chinese food. A lot of people order food to go, but for $13 string beans and $6 tiny pieces of maki, you'd expect it to have the best taste and best plating. I suppose their deals during certain hours make this place worth it, but not so much during dinner. You walk in, order, pay, then sit down at a table. For such prices, I thought it would be more of a generic restaurant style service, such as getting seated first, order, food comes out, eat, then pay. Nope. We tried their string beans, chicken chow fun, salmon roll, and hot and sour soup. The soup wasn't that great. I expected it to be hotter (both on the spice and the temperature), as it was quite watered down and lukewarm. Their string beans were pricey, but the flavor was there, though a bit soggy. I enjoyed the chow fun, but other people I was with said it was bland. The noodles were thicker than other thick noodles I've had. The salmon roll was expensive for what it was. It was sooooo tiny! Nothing special, but for $6?? Ahh, regret. The people that work here are friendly, and they definitely have their regulars.

Sorry all you haters, but this is my favorite place for California Rolls. They make them just how I like them; "shredded" fake crab meat and no cucumber. Yeah, I don't like that crunch in my rolls. Plus, they include tobiko (those little round balls also known as flying fish roe). Best yet, their everyday lunch special (11:30-4:00) includes two rolls for $7.95. If you dine in, tea is free. I got my rolls to go, and I only wish they gave me two packs of soy sauce instead of one. I have no idea how long I've had my bottle of the stuff back at home.

Fast Service, Cook to Order meals that will cost you $$$... 2 orders cost me 32.00 including Steam Roll. Food should have been no more then $20.00 at my local restaurant in Fredericksburg..but my sister says this is North Bethesda not Rockville so they charge North Bethesda prices... This was for Carryout.. Chicken & Snowpeas & Rice and Shrimp Bok Choy with very small shrimp too...would I use them again , only if I were desperate.. Try Mayflower in Bethesda I fed a family of 4 for what I paid here for 2 people.

I ordered carry out at 7 PM on a Friday night. I should have known better. Food arrived at 8:40 PM. Tempura was cold and soggy and the batter seemed more suitable to a bar serving deep fried whatever than to tempura -- no delicacy at all. Cold, soggy, inedible. $12 for naught. I ordered curry noodles -- the noodles felt like cheap spaghetti, and the curry sauce was flavorless, though yellow. The peas and carrots in the curry looked like frozen vegetables in the style of the 1970s. This food felt like it was put together out of cans from a bad grocery store -- no subtlety or flavor. Had I not been starving -- hadn't eaten all day -- I would have let it mostly untouched with the tempura. I also ordered a little sushi. Haven't had the nerve to try it -- stuck it in the fridge in my hotel room. I was surprised at the high delivery fee -- services like Seamless in NYC don't charge that much -- but i was hungry and too busy to go out. I would have had a better meal from Taco Bell, at 1/6 the price, in far less time. Positive note: the driver was nice enough. No idea if the 105 minute delay was his fault, the system's fault, or the "restaurant's" fault -- they seem to be more of a food dispensary than a restaurant. I am extremely disappointed. A waste of time and money.

Good food and fast service, I especially liked the sushi and the dumplings, many of the noodle shushes are also good but the soups are very plain but everything else is good

Favorite place for lunch! Food is consistently good and they are very accommodating to my dietary needs. Flora goes above and beyond to make my experience pleasant. Will continue to be my go to place for Chinese!

(This is for the location near White Flint.) I feel bad. When I worked down the street a few years ago this place got a lot of my lunch money. And sometimes my dinner money, if I worked late enough. It was great, not too expensive Chinese and Japanese food in one small location and you always left with a doggie box because they didn't skimp on their servings. And their lunch buffet ... [Sigh] Clearly my prolonged absence has had a negative effect on the location, the quality of the food and the prices. So it is my fault that my last two meals there have been distinctly sub-par and cost way more than they should. Please forgive me! I feel just awful. [Sob!] OK, not really. I don't know what happened here, but it is sad that it has gone downhill. (And the addition of Thai food to the menu does no one any favors.) If you're very hungry and your other choices are McDonald's or 7-11, of course, eat here. But otherwise, I can't recommend it as being worth the money.

  • Rebecca R.

The food was decent and the wait staff is friendly and attentive. It has the feel of bigger operation but is small hole in the wall at the back of a shopping strip. As a mix of Japanese and Chinese dishes-it wasn't outstanding on either, but was what you expect and at decent prices. It was not packed-but for a Wednesday night they seemed to have a lot of takeout orders.

After all of these years, still great food. Another one of the places I loved years ago when I lived in Rockville, that I am returning too with my return. I spent a number of lunchtimes here, both in college and after. The chicken with dry bean curd is still great after all of these years. The dragon maki was perfect.

Let me say that I wrote my first review on this place 4 years ago on Yelp. In that time, the quality has remained top notch but a lot more selection and the service and flavors have remained absolutely CONSISTENT, which is why my family continues to come back whenever we have a craving for sushi or Chinese. They have the best Hunan chicken in the area and sweet and sour chicken hands down. Be careful of the newbies writing these 1 star reviews based on one or two visits. I've eaten in the restaurant and ordered delivery over 50 times and can say it has ALWAYS been excellent service and quick delivery. One tip: When ordering delivery, call the restaurant directly for the fastest delivery, not one of these middlemen services like waiter on way, takeout taxi or grub hub.

My family and I have frequented Taipei Tokyo since it openrd many years ago. There is no other place in the area that serves sushi as well prepared at a great price than this place. The Chinese/Asian food is equally delicious. The service is efficient and pleasant. On the Chinese side of the house, you are greeted at the register by Flora, a sweet, smart woman who takes your order and quickly dispatches the kitchen, and who always recognizes her longtime customers. On the sushi side of the house, there is also a sharp young woman keeping all the busy orders straight. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Great carryout! Delicious hot menu and sushi at very reasonable prices. The food is prepared very very quickly and always perfectly. Flora is always so sweet . We love it!

Food is average, though it used to be really good. It's on a steady decline. The service is terrible! If I wanted to get yelled at over a meal I would visit my inlaws more often. *The people who put food on your plate* are inpatient and rude! Edited: The restaurant responded that there are no food servers. So just to be clear the people who put food on your plate are anything but warm and friendly.

This has been our go-to delivery place for chinese and sushi for over 10 years now. Every time a family member suggests trying a different sushi place they are quickly shot down!! The food is delicious, very customizable, always served piping hot, and the portions are VERY good. Flora at the register on the Chinese side is always so welcoming and makes sure to get to know the regulars, so when you walk in or call and she answers, it feels like chatting with an old friend. She always makes sure that your order, even with modifications, comes out promptly and perfectly cooked. Gonna be sad to go to college and not have Taipei just down the street!

My favorite here is the noodle soups. They make homemade noodles for the soup and the soups are homestyle just like your Chinese grandmother would have made for you. The prices are reasonable, the flavor is good, service is fast, the dining area mediocre---great place for lunch or quick dinner.

  • Cynthia B.

Lunch specials are awesome and reasonably priced. Get the shrimp and black bean sauce, eggplant or Kung pao chicken, or get the shrimp tempura rolls, salmon, or spider roll. Love the tempura and teriyaki chicken as well. It's always nice to see Flora!

I go here at least once a week after work. Flora, the cashier, is always friendly and attentive and the sushi is always made quickly, even when there's a crowd. Prices are a little high, but comparable to area.

I usually don't do this but since I am a review person I thought I would give an updated review of this place and share my experiences. OK so I have been here three times and you know what they say 3 strikes your out...The first time I ate at this place I was taken here by one of my bosses. I ordered the shrimp tempura rolls and the California Rolls they were ok but I have had better.... The second visit I decided to go back I got the shrimp tempura rolls because the lady told me I couldn't get 3 and 3 like I did the first time I went there. The presentation was awful and so were the rolls. Not to mention the lack of cleanliness where the sushi station is. Third and FINAL visit...my coworker wanted to try the sushi because I mentioned it the first time I had it. So we decided to go...when we walked in from first impressions he was NOT pleased and we decided to get the buffet. Needless to say that was NOT fresh or good at all. But to top it off there was a BABY ROACH crawling on the table... We all know what that means when you see a baby there are plenty more where he came from. So if you are in the area and hungry I would advise against this place.

I have been a regular since 1999. Food and service used to be great. But in the past year, it has been terrible - especially the service. You used to make a phone call and your food was ready in 15 minutes. Now it takes 30+ minutes. Not once but on multiple occasions this has happened. Not worth your time.

Good food, good service. Inside it's a little cafeteria with tray rails and all. Don't let the inside deter you. The food is good. It is a bit pricey but big portions and good flavor will keep you coming back. They have sushi too.

  • Phi N.

Came here for the sushi. We ordered the crab salad, Rock and Roll Maki (California roll, smoked eel & avocado, topped w/ tobiko (fish roe) & Japanese BBQ sauce), salmon rolls, spicy tuna rolls, and the Red Dragon Maki (Shrimp tempura roll topped with fresh salmon). I don't know how you all prefer your sushi, but I really like the special ones. They're not all boring with just one type of fish on rice... It has a good mix of flavor and seafood all in one bite. I could have done with out the salmon rolls and the crab salad, but the other 3 items hit the spot. Service was good, especially for an asian spot and the dishes were well presented.

Holy beeferooni, what the hell happened to the prices here?! I came back today after a long hiatus, and the prices have skyrocketed. The food is still decent, but the crowd is gone. Lower the prices and I'll come back. And maybe the crowd will too. I'd probably only consider starting to think about maybe possibily stopping by if I'm stopping by Stella's bakery next door to pick up some cake.

I loved the food and presentation. It was a bit crowded due to it being lunchtime, however, the service was quick. I had a California roll with plenty of Wasabi and Ginger. The location is easy to get to so you won't have to drive a long time to reach it. Worth the price and I will return.

this place is the perfect place to go to when you are wanting a combination of different flavors. its absolutely perfect when you can mix orange chicken and california rolls on the same plate. the lunch specials here are superb. the service is very good. and i love how they cook everything fresh in front of you definitely coming back on a regular basis for lunch

I have been a loyal, frequent customer for many years. They offer the best California Rolls in the area. Their food is quite savory. Flora always offers a friendly greeting and is most helpful when I need a little variety in my order. It is a local gem and I highly recommend it.

I love this restaurant! I usually get sushi and their sushi is always fresh and delicious! I also like other things on the menu, like thai drunken noodles. I have never been disappointed with anything I ordered here. Also, Flora, who works at the cash register is so friendly and makes for a pleasant atmosphere as soon as you walk in. Everybody else who works there is also friendly and professional. I highly recommend this restaurant!

I am a regular and always love the food there! Especially, the quality of sushi has gotten much better than before! my favorite is rainbow roll. The fish is very fresh. One of the best sushi in town! They always cook super fast, so you never have to wait for food there. Flora is always pleasant taking order and the best at the restaurant!

We have always liked the food at Taipei Tokyo and were willing to overlook the rude order takers/cashiers. It's gotten to the point that we laugh about it every time we visit (a lot). The bright spot is the gentleman named Ben who brings the food to the table. He is attentive, friendly and efficient. From now on we go somewhere else.

  • Jon E.

Literally just left there with a carry-out order of Basil chicken and shrimp and an order of crunchy Tempura Roll. The basil dish was mostly broccoli, if there was basil in there, I didn't see it. Maybe 3 shrimp. The crispy (not) shrimp roll was ok, but microscopic wasabi portion and 3 pieces of ginger. Cashier was was unhelpful, poor English and so got the order wrong. Will not go back...too many good asian restaurants in Rockville.

  • Audrey S.

We just got back from a month of travel and what a pleasure it was to know that Taipei Tokyo would provide a good meal. We get take out pretty frequently and Flora usually gets our order. She knows my husband's voice on the phone and is always friendly and helpful -- great customer service!

  • Jeff T.

Coming here as a child, I thought this place was as delicious as it was mystifying. The california rolls seemed to appear on your table the second you ordered them. The crispy, light tempura batter made vegetable delicious. Somehow, I could enjoy a Japanese and Taiwanese meal simultaneously. We came here often and were never disappointed. In my mind, Taipei Tokyo Cafe achieved somewhat of an immortal status that was only heightened by the fact that we suddenly stopped coming and I hadn't stepped foot inside in about seven years. I went back recently to give it a try against my mother's warnings. "Management has changed, everything is different." I was incredulous. Why would they change something that wasn't broke? In fact, things had changed. For one, the prices were way more than they used to be. California rolls and tempura were $9 each. The entrees on the Taipei side were all $12+ for lunch. The food was decent but everything was a little more watered down than I remember. Too much mayo in the crab mix and the batter on the tempura was oily and thick. Perhaps the most obvious change: the crowds too, were gone.

If there was a lower rating, this place deserves it. Some time ago, coworker tried this place while I ordered food from some other place. I was more eager to try the other place so I did not eat here. Today I decided to check it out. When I got there, I noticed that their express lunch is only $6.95. For 3 items (rice/noodle plus two more items of your choice), that is not a bad price. As I eat noodles, orange chicken, and something I don't recognize(sliced chicken with broccoli), I have realized why the price is lower than most places. They all taste like they were made some time ago and heated up multiple times. Honestly in-consumable food. I have never thrown away a tray of food but I am about to. Avoid this place at all costs.

Quality chinese food spot. This is our go-to place when we order. The sushi is good, the chinese food is good, and the delivery is almost always FAST. You know you order from a place often when the driver points out "I just delivered to your friends in the next building!" my favorite things on the menu: Spicy crunchy tuna roll, steamed dumplings, and basil chicken. It's a little pricier than your traditional chinese place, but it's worth it.

    (4)
  • Helen C.

My friends and I ordered from here for delivery, and they came right to our apartment door really fast! The fried rice is good and so is the Szechuan noodles with chicken (it's like a thick soup). The beef chow fun was okay but I've had it better at other places.

    (4)
  • R D.

Great for sushi combo at lunchtime. Good price, sushi always fresh, good miso soup. Like it lots. No atmosphere whatsoever, more like where you have lunch on your own from time to time.

  • Michael G.

I used to come here all the time years ago with friends and it was really good. I hadn't been here in a long time and it was the closest Chinese food to my house. All I can say is that I won't be back. I stood there waiting to place my order for like 10 and they kept asking if I was picking up. No, I came in to place an order. So I ordered Kung Pao Chicken and hot and sour soup. The hot and sour soup was bland and watery. It had no pork in it which I thought was always in hot and sour soup. The Kung Pao Chicken was meh. I have had better at Red Ginger which is less expensive and much better. And speaking of prices, holy crap, they are overpriced. When did they jack the prices up so much? I didn't figure an entree and soup would run $20! The place was not busy like when I went there years ago and now I know why. They also don't smile and don't seem to care about their customers. It's too bad because that area of Rockville is being re-done and the owners of this place will be forced out so another better restaurant can take their place.

    (2)
  • Al E.

A good spot with great food - no frills! Good to order in or take-out, they offer as authentic quality Asian-food that you can find in the area. They dont serve alcohol if you eat-in (the thing I do not like about it) but it's a great authentic place to eat!

  • Scarlette T.

Tried about mid 2009 and it was pretty terrible. Because at work we are always trying to find quick, decent food (obviously for good value), I wound up trying this place again in fall of 2010. At that time, the order was great! The pieces of fish were huge and fresh. With that in mind, I have been ordering since, searching for that same quality. It never happened again. It is only really acceptable for lunch specials. Decent amount of food for the price but the quality is not really there. The Chinese food is particularly sloppy, as though they're practically boiling whatever gets thrown in the wok. The sushi pieces are just shrinking and the instances where the fish size is decent, quality tanks. And to top it all off, ordering is a nightmare because no one speaks proper English; they can't understand what you want and they mess up the order! Side note: Last time I tried to order the lunch special at 2:54. (That's what my cable box said.) They said "no my boss won't let me." But that's what their website says. Until 3:00pm. Does it not? Why don't they just change it to 2:45 then? Cheapos = last call. I've given up on this place.

  • Cathleen P.

I want to give this place a 2.7. This place is good for a quick bite of Chinese food. It's a good price if you decide to get the lunch special. I like the Singapore Noodles. I hate curry, but I love this dish. It's not over powering. I have to admit, I had to take several bites of the dish before I realized how much I liked it. I think the sushi here is good, but it's a little over priced. This place is definitely set up like a café, so it's extremely casual. Oh and this is one of those places that depends on who is cooking that day, but most of the time my dishes come out mostly the same.

    (3)
  • Mark W.

Your mileage at Chinese restaurants may vary. Some can be notoriously bad for having canned, starchy, or greasy vegetables. Luckily this is not the case with the Taipei Tokyo Cafe. I came here for dinner, not wanting to go to the usual chain restaurant. I had sushi for lunch earlier (see my review on Kabuki Sushi) so I wanted something different. The chicken with broccoli that I got was a savory selection. It tasted just right and went well with the white rice. The vegetable spring roll I got was crunchy and not at all greasy as some egg rolls/spring rolls can be. I haven't tried the Japanese selections, so I can't comment on their quality. But if you want some good Chinese food from somewhere other than the typical takeout place, Taipei Tokyo may be your cup of tea.

  • Marisa L.

I happen to really like this oldie-but-goodie. Very basic rolls but they are consistently good tasting and are a great price (don't forget to check out their amazing lunch sushi roll specials). I have only had a couple of dishes other than sushi, the noodle dishes are good, but I just love their Cali rolls the best. I will probably keep coming here as long as I am in North Bethesda!

    (4)
  • Katharine B.

Great place with no atmosphere. Fresh sushi at very low prices. You pay for that in the atmosphere, it feels like a dive bar. But the people are nice and I'd rather have good good than a beautiful restaurant. Oddly, I have never tried the Chinese food in all of my visits (20+, I would estimate). It looks good, but just would always rather have sushi.

  • Mimi U.

Mother of god, this is the worst place I've ever been to for Asian food. I order Thai fried rice, and I ask for a side of lime wedges (that's how you eat Thai fried rice!). She brings me TWO meager slices of lime wedges. I use them. There's a lot of rice left over, and I ask the waitress to pack me another package of lime wedges. You know what she did? She packed the OLD ones I already used instead of giving me fresh lime wedges. Wow. The people here do not know how to run a dining establishment. This is exactly what I *abhor* about Asian restaurants - the people who run it are penny-wise and pound-foolish! (not being racist, lol, I'm Asian too).

I have a love/hate relationship with this place. They have counter service and a friendly person that will bring you tea, water, containers etc. I originally stopped going there because their men's room was out of order for about 3 years. (Okay, I might be exaggerating a little) Anyway, here's the bad part: everything costs about 2 dollars more than the greasy Chinese carry-out. Here's the good part, if you want something that's not on the menu and they have the ingredients, they will make it and they won't charge you more, and they don't look at you like you are a crazy person. I went there yesterday, ordered something that is not on the menu and I got exactly what I wanted. I would go to four stars except my bladder still hurts from the three years without a men's room. It's good Chinese, get it to go, just in case.

  • Dan Z.

It is what it is...good delivery Chinese & Japanese food. Nothing that would win a Michelin Star, but good food fast. I like the Thai Drunken Noodles or any of the spicy soups (the Korean Spicy Noodle Soup really hits the spot). If you are looking for consistent good Asian delivery/takeout, this is the spot. They also appreciate their customers here, I occasionally receive free soups just because they care.

I just gotta say it. This was the worst. I took two choices from the Chinese lunch buffet. I could force my way through the chicken, but stopped at one piece of shrimp that seemed to be breaded with some form of invisible library paste. Never be going here again.

---3.5 stars--- After working late then running errands for an hour, I was looking forward to getting back home and realized I was in no mood to cook dinner. I was passing by this place on the way home so decided to stop in and give it a try. On entering,

Lets face it, this place is a dump. The food is below-par, which would have been acceptable if the pricing was less. Instead, they charge as much if not more than as any other sushi bar . And this place is a hole-in-the-wall. Night and day when you compare it with a place like Tako Grill in Bethesda, MD. My parents used to like coming here just because of location, but I've always hated this place. The worst part about it is the absolutely horrible service. They had me wait 10 minutes to take my order (with no-one else in line, mind you) because they had me jump from one cash register to the other (on opposite sides of the room; they did it twice) because each cashier told me to buy at the other side. Bottom line: do not come here to eat.

AVOID AT ALL COST!! I used to LURVE this place (especially the beef bowl) so much, I'd take my friends there even though we did not drive and had to take a Metro - read - walk from the Metro to this place. However, over time, new management, new chefs, and soon, food that did not taste very good. It is like a little buffet cos they serve both Jap stuff and Taiwanese stuff across the counters. But you could not pay me to come here now.

Only place to get sushi by my job in white flint.

Their sushi has really gone down hill. I use to be a regular here but the place is run-down, service is average and the sushi is below par. Funny thing is, they raised prices. I won't be back.

This place has its ups and downs. Mainly though, its quite good. My first memory of this place was a post-SAT test hangout with a good friend. We ordered dumplings (which, besides the sushi, is the best thing here) and ate panda snacks. The relaxed mood of this almost-cafeteria restaraunt really makes it easy to sit and enjoy a quick meal. Its not the most authentic but it gets the job done. Its more one of those "I'm driving down Rockville Pike, where can I get food?" places. And with RP being replete with food venues, thats not a bad reputation to have. I used to like it a lot more, but then they changed their dumpling sauce and now I go to A&J's for that!

This is the second place I've ever gone to eat at and then left hungry with my food almost untouched. I thought it would be great to try based on all the other Yelp reviews, but I was horrified after going there! They only offer buffet on the weekend, and everything had been sitting out for much too long--the food was not kept warm enough to be safe. The noodles tasted like they were stir fried in used grease. My boyfriend's sushi roll was misshapen and the rice was smooshy. He ate about half before giving up. The place looked dirty. I love small hole in the walls, but there is a difference between cheap and dirty. Many of my favorite hole in the walls are cheesy or chintzy, but CLEAN. You could see smudgy marks on the back walls and the floor was dirty. On top of that, the waiter brought us a soy sauce bowl that was dirty. He noticed it was dirty so went to bring us a new one--it had a piece of rice stuck in it! I watched one of the back kitchen cooks come out of the kitchen and go into the men's bathroom and come out less than one minute later WITH HIS APRON ON! No! No! No! How could there have been time for him to take his apron off, pee, wash his hands properly, and then put the apron back on?

If you want some quick and cheap Chinese food and sushi, this is the place to go. My mom loves this place because it lets her have both Chinese and Japanese in one place, and for a decent price too. You can't beat the prices of the sushi rolls, and the hand-made noodle soup on the Chinese side comes in huge bowls, which we can never finish. You order at either counter and the food will be brought to you at your table (if you're lucky enough to find one, especially if you come smack dab in the middle of the rush lunch or dinner time!). Your best bet is to carry it out. The 3 stars are also because parking can be frequently tough at this tiny strip mall. If you still have room after your meal, wander over to the Stella's pastry shop a few doors down and get some wonderful French pastry. Yum!

this place used to be packed 13-14 years ago...had to stand in line and wait for a table during lunch.....fast forward, I walked in and had a similar experience to Vivian and AccioSoy Milk..prices were high, but even worse..I stood there and stood there, no hi, no hello, no nothing...so for me no order..with so much competition, one would think they would try to keep the customers who bother to walk in the door...I guess they don't need their jobs!

I love the sushi here. I go all the time. The cooked Japanese food and Chinese food is also very tasty. This place looks gross and dirty but the food is really great.

Love the food!!! It is always good! The prices are right - the staff is friendly. It is a Asian Fusion place with Japanese and Chinese Food. I love Asian Fusion spots, they rock! Also, I love to eat!!!!

This may as well be a review for Tokyo Cafe 1 because I've never ventured over to Taipei -with the huge open flames from their woks and the intimidating, old Chinese ladies, I feel like I'm in Oz rather than Rockville . I like this place for 3 things and 3 things only: Cali rolls, Salmon Special, and the Sesame Chicken. Once again, I am not a sushi aficionado. I LOVE sake (salmon) and that's about it...so far. Cali Rolls - "pulled" fake crab meat, a mayo sauce, avocado, and roe. I could (and probably have) eaten 6 of these rolls in one sitting. They're that good. This would be even better if they spread out the roe but they just dump a spoonful in the middle of 6 pieces. Salmon Special - 6 nigiri, 6 pieces of sashimi for about $17 or so. Not a bad deal. The salmon is thick and buttery. The rice is meeh~ Sesame Chicken - A fried chicken cutlet covered with a sesame sauce and sesame seeds, served with rice. Pretty basic and pretty tasty. The restaurant itself feels rather cramped and as others have Yelped, is pretty dirty. TTTwo--a little farther up the Pike--is cleaner but I like the food here better. Once you order, you'll get a table card and once your order is ready, a server will bring your food out to you. They have water available at the counter and they give you fortune cookies for dessert.

Zero stars for customer service. Witnessed an atrocious customer service experience today. This is a buffet where a server spoons out food that you point to. A customer asked the buffet server for "no sauce" as she was diving her serving spoon into a heap of food. The server ignored the customer's request and when the customer asked again for "no sauce" the manager came over and refused so the customer walked out. This place used to serve very good chinese food. Now it is really very bland and too sweet. Shame.

I'm a big fan of their california rolls, tuna maki and the bean curd and veggie soup. I have been going to this place for years and have tried other things, but these stand out as tasty, worth the money and worth going back for. Soups on the "Tokyo"/sushi side are terrible. The Chinese food isn't great. The people working there generally seem in a bad mood. This is America though and most people like to have pleasant service with a smile - you don't get there here. I agree with other Yelpers about the place being dirty also - a little effort would go a long way. I think for years they were taking cash orders and not ringing them up (presumably to keep it under the table and un-taxable) which always made me mad - so many other businesses run legitimately. Haven't seen this recently, but I generally pay with credit (they only take Mastercard and Visa - No AmEx).

Largest selection I have ever seen. Great food. I could go a month to this place and still get more. I didn't get sushi, but was satisfied with it's Chinese section. GREAT ESTABLISHMENT.

We come here once every week or two for an inexpensive sushi dinner. The sushi has never been phenomenal, but for the price it was good. I think they lost one of their good sushi chefs because the quality of the rolls has diminished recently. It's still ok, but nothing to write home about.

They got the best tasting spicy tuna rolls and california rolls in the area. They make 'em fast and at a pretty low cost. We've been to this place several times and every time it doesn't disappoint!!! I haven't tried the chinese food at this place yet but I hear good things. This place is much better than one by Twinbrook metro station, in my opinion.

When I first entered this establishment, I was worried. I read the reviews and ... despite the low ratings, I decided to try it anyway. The decor has hopefully seen better days BUT the California, Philly, Shrimp Tempura, and Avocado rolls are by far the best I have had in the metro d.c. area. The rice literally, melts in your mouth, the avocado is fresh, and the crab is plentiful. I have literally been here three days in a row... and I feel that I will be back soon.

you know what, I like this place. it's consistent. the food comes out FAST and it's always piping hot when you ask for stuff extra spicy, you actually get it extra spicy the dude that buses the tables and refills your water and runs the food is a machine... always on point the have an actual chinese menu for you real azns out there, or for the more brave round eye like myself (though it doesnt compare to Joe's Noodle House or Bob's) the sushi on the other side is average, but it's never bad cheap. what's not to like?

Quick and easy for the masses but not great. I was a loyal customer for years because it is the closest to my home, it is fast and easy and food decent. One day I found a peice of rock, glass, tile, something hard and not supposed to be in the food obviously. I called and reported it and they wanted me to bring it in, but I was hungry and tired the reason you order take out in the first place and grab cheap fast eats is because you are tired. I was not going back out. Once again they said they would replace the food on the phone but I was too tired to go. About three weeks later I went to redeem my food, the girl at the front had no decision making power, the manager off and the chef didn't believe me. I was so irrate after being a loyal customer for years I told the chef I wasn't making it up and he laughed. So rude. Crappy service that reflects the atmosphere. You get what you pay for. I was loyal for years because I liked the gal at the front, it was fast and cheap and decent but, again one of those places on the day something bad happens no professionalism to correct themselves. They calleed me back saying I could come back in after threatening to report glass in my food for a replacement dish. No way am I going back with a rude chef like that. He could spit in my food or something. There was already glass in it. No thanks Anyone who raves about this place has not tried Raku for sushi or Sushi Damo and for Chinese Seven Seas and Tony Lin's. This place is fast though and food is decent but not to compensate for crap service, glass or rocks or something in my food and a rude chef.

As a sushi review, only three stars. Convenience would be four. The "Cinese" food? four stars also, but I almost always get the sushi. It's not the best sushi. They mass make the rolls as the lunch hour progresses because of the half price lunch roll deal (best sushi deal in town). It's a step above grocery store sushi (Whole Foods) but nothing like Uni, Tako or Sushi Ko. No, it's not great. The place itself is pretty ghetto also. But the price and the location make it a top pick among many for lunch. I've occasionally had dinner there. They have a few newer, much nicer locations but they all seem very different and this is the only one I have visited regularly (because of the convenience of the location for me). If it's lunchtime during the week and you are on a budget, but want sushi, this is the only place and you will be happy.

I loved the noodles at this restaurant. My parents took me all the time. They have a great selection of dishes for two different Japanese and Chinese menus. The sushi is not that remarkable. The Chinese dish offerings are great. Once again, the homemade noodles are really great, especially in noodle soup. I miss this place a lot located in Rockville.

This is really a comfort food type of place. The sushi is good, they have fresh free hot tea waiting for you in the back, there's always cheap greasy Chinese food at the opposite counter if you want it. I like how it's a Japanese/Chinese restaurant, but the wall paper has French cartoon chefs with curled mustaches and holding french bread while saying "Bon appetite!"

Taipei Tokyo is situated in a corner, beneath Kinko's. It's manned by staff who only understand the language of fingers pointing at the menu. Their idea of presentable is wiping the table clean with the same cloth that also used to dry the plates, strange spills on the floor, the sweat of the brow... Kinda reminds me of home, really. Now, it's personal preferences but I kinda like this place but the price is a little to steep for me. I love their Stir-fried String Beans sauteed (pretty sure it's the wrong spelling) in Sauce and Beef. Now that is a delight. There's also a sushi bar on the other side of the room that serves passable Japanese food. I think it's because they were prepared by a Chinese staff but you ask, "does it matter? After all, Asian people look alike." If you happened to actually asked that question... you'll burn in Asian hell. Anyway, the place is also served by a very sullen girl who should not be wearing ectomorphic clothes for her endomorphic body. That is not cool, man. I'm trying to eat here! And when I eat, I want my food to remain in my belly and digest. The only time, you can sashay in your dubious fashion choice is when I want to crap my pants, which is NEVER! This place has been running for years. That means it's doing something good with the food. Try it.

I came here for the lunch special since I was in the area and you get a ton of food for what you pay for. If you manage to eat it all, be prepared for a serious food coma afterwards. The quality is so-so, but it's a quick and easy place for lunch once in awhile.

The Chinese side of this joint used to have a guy in the window who would roll and cut noodles by hand, all from scratch. He was a true master of his craft, and in the words of my fiance: 'That's when it was the BEAST!' If you don't understand my man's jargon, that means it was damn good! Now, it's still pretty good - just no longer THE beast anymore. We used to live in the area, and I miss getting takeout from the Japanese side of Taipei Tokyo. Their rolls, nigiri and sashimi were always fresh and tasty. The two of us used to STUFF ourselves for around $30-35. They have hot Japanese dishes too, but we always stuck to the sushi. I was always sure I'd get consistently good sushi at a good price. The location doesn't have the best atmosphere, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend eating there. If it did, I would give it an extra star.

When you're in the mood for Chinese food, go where the Chinese seem to go? That is true for Taipei Tokyo Cafe. This place looks like the food should be cheap, and thankfully the food is cheap. The food is decent, and that's probably what keeps the crowds coming back. Low prices means respectable value. There are a couple of Taiwanese dishes, somewhat true to the Taipei part, as well as more familiar Americanized Chinese food. This is the part that boils down more to personal preference, but the kitchen and the dining room are the same. So while the counters are tall, keeping you from seeing most of the cooking action, the heat and smell really fills the room. Not exactly the comfort I really had in mind. Several alternatives that are better in the neighborhood, are A&J Restaurant, Bob's Noodle House, but they also have alot more of a authentic menu, meaning weirder and unfamiliar foods. If you'd like to stick with what you know, consider checking out their second cafe at 1596 Rockville Pike, just up the road north a few minutes. The place is nicer, but the food tastes about the same.

What can I say about Taipei Tokyo? On the left you have Tokyo - a small generic sushi bar that looks like it belongs in a stripmall (which it does). On the right you have Taipei - a chinese cafeteria type line. The food - surprising better than expected. The sushi is pretty fresh and made very well. The chinese food taste good but not one of my favorites (but I am into that whole healthy eating thingand chinese food is typically bad for you). The lunch specials there are great because they're cheap and I'm poor. Quick decent food with numbered combo meals and expanding in number of restaurant location. Isn't this how McDonalds got started? Don't say I didn't warn you. The only tiff I have with Taipei Tokyo is in the name. I've been to Taipei. The foods totally different. You can't label generic chinese food as food from Taipei when it taste nothing like what it shoud. It's like when I had a NY style pizza from California Pizza Kitchen and found pinapples on a thick doughy pie.

So I have eaten here any number of times and I think today will be my last. One the price of the food went up - not really the worst thing in the world but that combined with the rude service and so-so food, it really is not worth it. I was handed the wrong carry out order and was not aware of it until I got back to my office. When I called to let them know I was informed that I had been told what was in the bag. Unfortunately someone else ordered a similar order to me and since the lady working the register said it so fast I only really made out that item. While I realize I should have checked my food before I left it is really uncalled for to speak to a customer like they are completely at fault for the mix up. When I went to pick up my correct food - the new bag was shoved at me with a "This is yours" while the lady walked away from me. No sorry about the mix up, no thanks for calling to let us know - nothing. I could understand this if I had called with an attitude or showed up to pick up the second order and yelled but I did not. So in short - ok food + bad service = not going back.

Tokyo Taipei Cafe is all about good food. It's not about fancy atmosphere or service. From the way it's setup w/ 2 sides (Japanese and Chinese) with counter seating and seat-your-self style tables, it's obvious that it's all about eating and not about fluffy fancy ambiance. If you want to eat on a clean table and/or have ambient lighting, then you can get take out and eat at home. The prices are really good, and the food has been consistently awesome for the 10+ years that I've been eating there. The California rolls from the Japanese side are amazing, and the Shrimp with garlic sauce from the Chinese side has been a favorite for years. Update 4/6/07: Downgraded to 4 stars bc I woke up the next day w/ a killer headache as did another member of my family. Seems as if they use MSG or some other spice. Not sure if it was from the Chinese side or the Japanese side as we had both. Request no MSG if you're sensitive

I agree with other reviewers who said it's a "comfort food" type of place. It's good, but not great. I prefer Hinode for dinner since the service and the quality of the sushi seems higher.

When you want some sushi in 5-8 minutes and you want it to be cheap, look no further. This little joint has been around a number of years and has spawned a 2 & 3. The place just had a ikea makeover. Great for takeout and to dine in for a 20 min experience. I always get the sushi but there is a Chinese food side. So please comment on the Chinese. Couple of 2 can eat for under $30. Also around the corner is White Mountain Creamery or Dunkin Doughnuts.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
