Meet up with friends for dinner here,(my friend picked this place anyway) was surprised about the fresh Sashimi and the sushi!! Food presentation is wonderful and the waitresses here are very friendly. I will defiantly come back and try other stuff. I heard the Thai dishes are pretty good as well. Recommended!! P.S. we ordered Sashimi deluxe(24pcs & 18 pcs) sushi deluxe, dragon roll (I think, with the eel. Love it love it!) And the crunchy sth maki.. sorry too much good food can't remeber everything.:-P

First time here. Atmosphere: very clean, trendy music playing Staff: Friendly Seating: At the sushi bar, at the mini bar and open seating throughout the restuarant. My server was Eddy, very nice, informative about the menu. He said the mango dragon balls would take up to 10 mins. to make. So I ordered the Edamame and spicy tuna too. I advised him if I could get it with no rice (yes, I am that person on occasion I will attempt to order sushi no rice), he said sure spicy tuna hand roll (see pic). I even heard him tell the chef hand roll. Eddy was great! Food presentation was nice. The flavor of the spicy tuna was not over powering, like in some places (the hand roll packs it in), the Mango Dragon Balls came out quickly, great flavor. A drizzle of the BBQ gave it that zing while the mango drizzle gave it the tpuch of sweet (yum). The Edamame was cooked/steamed just right, had flavor but no sauce. I added some soy! That was a good idea. Lol. Plenty so I took it in a bag to go to snack on later so I could finish the other food items. I will be back! 3.5 because I want to try other items on the menu. Happy Eats

The service was decent. The host were every welcoming, but I felt really rushed by the server, but I do understand that it was a busy night. The sushi is nothing special. The rice tasted bland and grainy. This place was amazing a few years ago, but now it just okay... Their entrees are decently priced around $10 for dinner, but seriously one garden roll is 2.95?! It wasn't worth it. It was more like a riceroll burrito. It was over stuffed with lettuce, and very little amount of carrots and rice noodles. We had three people in our party. Two of us got our sushi, but the third person had to wait about 15 mins for the pad thai. We finished our food way before she even got her entree. I would think that they would time it better. I won't be going back.

The review is mix depends on what you want to order, and who is your server that day o_O For sushi, if you want original fresh simple sushi, go to other sushi place. Their sushi dishes smell fishy. However, if you are the new generation who like mayo, hot chili oil, and all kind of seasonings sushi roll, it is kind of ok (it really doesn't matter what kind of meat in there anyway). For Chinese food, it is pretty good in general. The owner is Chinese. Deco is nicer than most Chinese restaurants, but the price is a bit higher. This is an ok place, but I will not return even with a Groupon. There are many choices better than this place in the neighborhood. However, I will not put up a big fight if my friends (who like heavily seasoned sushi rolls) want to go there.

service was a little lacking, but food was fantastic. not sure if everyone gets the chinese menu (with english translations) in addition to the regular one or if it was just us as a chinese family, but off of that we got the shanghai wontons, and off the regular menu we got chicken tempura, mapo tofu, and seafood hotpot. everyone at our table tried a little of everything, and overall we were fairly pleased. also, they have a good variety of vegetarian options, which is always a plus.

They were a little overwhelmed at lunch today, but the sever was pleasant. I have to say it was the best General Tso's I have had here in Maryland. I have always asked for my chicken to be extra crisp with extra sauce on the side, most places still give me the chicken a little on the slimy side, not these guys! They were spot on, just the way I like it.

The only reason why I gave this restaurant a second star is because the sushi is delicious. Sadly enough, I will not be coming back here, regardless of how yummy their sushi may be. Today was my THIRD attempt at allowing them to change their reputation that I had already formed in my head of Taipei Tokyo at Fallsgrove. Fail.... When you walk into a restaurant, usually one would expect to be greeted kindly with a smile. Or at least a "Hello, how can i help you?" Not at Taipei Tokyo at Fallsgrove. Instead, I walk in with a smile on my face (as I usually have) and I am greeted with a raised eyebrow and a "Yes?" RUDE. The lady at the front that is supposed to greet customers is plain RUDE and does not deserve my business any more. She claimed that I NEVER placed an order online and she does not have an order with my name. She asked for my telephone number, I gave it to her.. Still, she could not find my order. The lady at the front made me feel it was MY FAULT that she did not have my order. She kept shrugging her shoulders and looking at me. As I am searching through my emails for a receipt, she finally finds my order? No apology was given to me and my food was thrown at me. I am employed at a rather large business in the Fallsgrove/Shady Grove Road Rockville area, and have told ALL of my clients, co-workers, and customers about my experience at Taipei Tokyo. I will not be coming here ever again!

I'm surprised by all the low reviews here. I'd say this is a solid 4.5 for a sushi place. This restaurant is a chain sushi place w/ chain prices. I guess I'm not that picky, but I really enjoy the food from here. Full disclaimer--I almost always get takeout around lunchtime. I normally get their two roll special (pretty nice lunch special, used to be $8, was recently increased to $8.50, I think) and their house salad with ginger dressing. I am always THAT customer that has special requests--I'm allergic to pineapple, so I always ask for no pineapple on the salad, and I've never gotten pineapple. I appreciate that there are so many options for the two roll special (pick any two on a huge list). My meal ends up being around $13, which is a bit high for one person, but not particularly high for sushi, esp in this area. I've never had to wait for my food either--it's always ready by the time I get there, even when the restaurant is busy. They take credit card, and they are competitive for lunch prices in the shopping center (most places, Chipolte, Moby Dicks, etc are between $8-10 for lunch). I'll keep coming back unless something changes!

Nice selections! We tried to decide if we should have Japanese or Chinses and we found this one which has both. All of us loved their sushi rolls!! I ordered double dragon rolls and I have to say they are the best. Also their hot and sour soup is very good! Will be back soon :)

This is by no means an authentically Japanese or Chinese restaurant, but it has okay food and great service. However, with actual Japanese and Chinese restaurants in the area as well as plenty of better food options in the Fallsgrove shopping center (Moby Dick, Chipotle, etc.), I doubt I'll be coming here again unless I happen to be with someone who's dying to eat here. I've been a regular in this shopping center for years but finally tried this place out after getting a LivingSocial deal. I came with pretty low expectations based on what I've heard from others but was pleasantly surprised. Our table of 3 ordered avocado salad, a sesame chicken bento box, the TT noodle soup, and the crispy crab and cheese wontons. The lettuce in the avocado salad was pre-shredded and not very fresh, but the salad was okay for a $5 dish. The bento box was probably the best out of the bunch - the chicken was decent and the California rolls were tasty. The noodle soup couldn't hold a candle to noodle soups at other authentic Chinese restaurants in Rockville, but it was still pretty good and had a heaping portion of different veggies and meat. The fried wontons were cold and were interesting to try, but I could have done without them. We had a ton of food for the 3 of us and had trouble finishing everything. The food was reasonably priced even before we applied the LivingSocial deal. Service was great and our waiter was very courteous and patient. I'm glad I got the deal and finally tried this place out! Lastly, one suggestion to the restaurant is to invest in some actual reusable menus for sit-in guests in place of paper carry-out menus.

Came here for lunch with a groupon. Overall, great slections with decent food. The price is somewhat high. Even with groupon, we averaged $20/head for benbox lunch. The bento box was actually pretty good, but I will probably save for a special occasion to splurge $20+ for lunch.

Went for dinner last night because usually I love the food and service. Tonight everything was way off and not in a good way. It was very difficult to order because the servers English skills were lacking. Usually the sushi is very good but last night I had to send back a 14$ soft shell crab roll because the soft shell crab was nothing more than tempura batter. (See photo). The miso soup was very bland. 3 of us were dining and our food all came out at different times. For the prices, I was not impressed with the paper "to go" menus at the dinner table or the laminate xerox copies of the Bento box nightly specials. The manager did take off the soft shell crab roll from the bill but the sushi chefs rolled their eyes as she showed it to them. There were a lot of employees working and the servers were all nice but it was very hard to communicate with them. I wish they had sushi tickets to check what we wanted to ease the communication gap. Not what it used to be. Makes me sad because I really used to get great food and service here.

I'm disappointed in my experience today because I've had TT in the past and it was good. However: -The food was pretty good. I got a Thai tea and a Thai soup that both tasted really good. I also got a volcano roll that was okay- definitely not worth $12!! Too expensive. The only reason I splurged was because I had a Groupon. -The service was pretty bad. The servers did not speak English well at all, which made everything really confusing. They tried to take our menus away after ordering appetizers and our food came out at different times. They need English speaking servers that are a little more polite and friendly. -Using my Groupon was the worst part. I had an expired Groupon BUT the value of $20 on the Groupon was still valid and never expires. Trying to explain this to someone who doesnt speak English is difficult. She had me read off all of the numbers and letters of the Groupon because she couldn't read English. They still had problems with the Groupon after that- it shouldnt be that hard. They even took my phone into the back room, totally unprofessional and weird. I'm surprised they dont have better service for a nice, populated area. Might need to re-think that. I probably wont come back here, sorry TT I've lost interest.

This place has good food but it is way overpriced. They have a wide selection of sushi, and good seating options for big groups. Their basil beef is really good, but not enough to justify what you're paying

CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP or chef or something but this place is GOOD. They have a legit Taiwanese chef now that makes the best scallion pancakes ever. They actually taste pretty legit. It originally was pretty Americanized but now it's completely different! Be sure to come and try the sushi. They have a sushi bar that makes pretty good sushi. They also had this really good beef rice. It comes in a huge bowl. We've came back several times for their 湯圓 which is made with this really good soup. Sometimes they don't have it, but the times they do, definitely order it.

Hubby and I got the fried tofu as an appetizer, the chirasi and sashimi deluxe. Don't get the chirashi! Looked to be on a 6" size platePuny and not at all what other sushi places give you. What a joke! I almost laughed when the waiter brought us the food. It looked like they threw about 10 pieces of raw fish on a bowl of rice and stuck two green "fake grasses" for presentation. We used a living social coupon, and it was still a joke of quantity of food for the price. Save your money and go somewhere else. Only good thing is that they had brown rice.

I'm a fan. I can get my Chinese fix even when I'm on a tight schedule. This restaurant is clean, the service is friendly but most if all it's speedy. I don't mind coming here for lunch because I can trust the servers to get me in and out. Beware, parking in this shopping center is a headache but all other experiences are pretty good. The black bean, mongolian, hunan and basic brown sauce options are always solid options. The dishes are well seasoned and go well with the steamed rice. The lunch specials simply come with the entree and rice so don't expect more. Lunch is about $11 plus but I think it's worth it. I have yet to find better Asian cuisine in Rockville.

  • Christina D.

Authenticity aside, I've only had their two roll lunch special. You get two small (6 pieces each) maki rolls for $8. It's not too shabby of a deal given that the fish to rice ratio is insane. The quality of fish is pretty good and service is quick and friendly.

There are a good number of Asian restaurants in the King Farm area. However, many seem to be rather average at best, and Taipei Tokyo is no exception. To be fair, I have had some good noodle dishes here like the Chow Fun and Pad See U, but overall I get the feeling that they are absolute buffoons in the kitchen. In my opinion, their main fault is that they drastically under-season everything, but they also screw up the little things like under-cooking vegetables, serving heaps of inedible meat in their dishes, and making miserably bad sushi rolls with barely enough fish in them. Unfortunately, just about every meal I've had here has been a disappointment. And it's expensive! You can definitely do better than Taipei Tokyo.

The smallest maki rolls ever, but that's only because the Taipei Tokyo in Rockville has spoiled me with theirs. Overall- OK

The appearance of Taipei Tokyo stands out compared to a majority of the other restaurants in the shopping center it shared. Likewise, since it offers a bar, it seems to be in a slightly different category then them as well. So what does that mean for this review... Coming in, I was impressed by its appearance. Once I got the menu, the saw the prices were more aligned with the appearance than the rest of the shopping center. Still, its all about value (which I will get to shortly). I ordered the Edamame and Sashimi Combo. The Miso Soup arrived quickly and tasted great. The Edamame followed shortly and was solid, yet not overly impressive. Finally, the Sashimi arrived and seemed DOA. 12 pieces of average fish (only 4 varieties), even cut slightly larger than typical, didn't scream high value (given the price). I was hoping the combo might have included a wider selection of fish and at least one that was above the typical salmon or tuna grade. In all, I'm comfortable with an A-Ok. If you are, Taipei Tokyo might be worth a visit.

I was here recently for their new Happy Hour and was blown away by all the new signature appetizers they have now! From the Crispy "Bang Bang" style shrimp, to the tuna tartare, everything was amazing. This place has always been one of my favorites as it has all different kinds of options depending on if you're feeling like Japanese food, Taiwanese food or even Thai food. Their Sushi is definitely fresh and creative and from a noodle lovers perspective, they really hit the spot. Bonus: They serve XLB's now (aka Soup Dumplings), which is one of my favorite dishes of all time, so I can't wait to try them! Overall, if you love good Asian food with a lovely atmosphere and great service, Taipei Tokyo is a must try!

Im disappointed to have to write a negative review (which I have never done before)...The woman who served on us was very rude and looked at us as if we were idiots every time we said or asked her anything. The thing that really ruined the dinner was when my cousin ordered a chocolate mouse cake which came out looking dry, and when we all tried it, it tasted stale, old, dry and absolutely disgusting. When I tried to explain to the woman we wanted something else instead or that I didn't want to pay for stale food, she just walked away and still charged me for it. I am not one to send back food but if it's stale and old I will. That is morally wrong and disgusting. Will not be coming back anymore.

Walked in and was greeted immediately. Decided to sit at the bar where we received great service from the sushi staff, Leo and Mr. Lee. They were beyond nice and generous. The food was by far the best sushi I have tasted. You can tell that the sushi staff take pride in what they do. Each plate was decorated with colorful food. Would recommend this place to anyone. I will definitely be coming back here soon!

The restaurant was referred by a friend several years ago and has been one of my favorite Asian restaurants since then. First, the decoration of this restaurant is modern and nice. Service was always good and fast. Most importantly, food were just fresh and delicious. I usually ordered sushi rolls as an appetizer and never got disappointed. The crunch dragon roll with shrimp tempura in the middle and eel and avocado on the top was the best dragon roll I ever had. Some other entrees I like include sizzling shrimp and scollop platter, Kung Pao chicken, black bean fish fillet, and combination lo mein. The restaurant even has a little party room in the back, which may fit 15 to 20 people. While I am writing this review, I am now also thinking to host a family gathering there this fall!

  • Alison W.

We only go there because it's conveniently located in Fallsgrove and the kids really like the food. But everything I've had there is mediocre, overpriced, and not authentic Asian anything. Which is not surprising since I've never been anywhere that can successfully pull off authentic dishes from a "pan Asian" menu. The Tom Kha soup was a terrible bland disappointment, pad Thai was too tangy, and most of the Chinese dishes are pretty awful. Sushi rolls are ok.

    (2)
  • Matthew D.

I generally come for the sushi which is consistently wonderful. Recently, I sat down for dinner here which was equally as good. I ordered the salmon Bento box. My friend ordered the chicken tempura. I will definitely be back for more sushi.

I have been here a few times especially when I lived in Rockville. This time, the service was horrible. I saw four servers looking at their cell phones when I didn't have a bowl for soy sauce. When I finally got their attention, one came and put bowls in the empty place settings but didn't bring me one. I had a hard time getting water and my check. I don't care for California rolls as I don't like the krab sticks. I ordered a specialty roll with crab...not one that was supposed to have krab stick. I got a krab stick. Ugh. A little much for what you get.

Could I give less than a star? I've been there twice, and the second time was only because people I was with had a groupon. The waiter I've gotten both times is not only rude but is also incompetent. He forgets something like utensils, acts like you are putting him out when he has to go get it, and the arrives with a plastic spoon. That's it. He claimed to be writing down the order but then when he read them back couldn't get what everyone wanted. THEN he brought the wrong dish and argued with us when we told him that. We talked to the manager asking to get a different waiter. We didn't and when he came back to the table he told us he knew we complained, and he was sorry, but then added how it was really our faults. The food was also completely subpar. Sashimi tasted old and I couldn't choke it down. Just terrible, never returning.

Came here yesterday for a late lunch and i wish i hadn't. There were probably only 2 other tables but it still took the waitress 15 minutes to come get my order. I ordered a few sushi rolls that came out quickly enough but they just weren't any good. Won't be coming back here again.

went here today for dinner and sat up at the bar. I had a nice discussion about rockville with one of the sushi chef's. He was super friendly and fun to talk with. I had the dynamite roll and the chef gave me extra spicy sauce for free. Overall a great experience. Friendly chef, busy restaurant, good service and good food. Price is also very reasonable. The only reason i'm not giving it 5 starts is because I have had better quality sushi and know it exists. This is middle of the road quality sushi..but hey you gotta pay more for the higher stuff.

While our pops was in the hospital we ate whenever we could and at times we were fortunate to have supportive pals join us. As one can tell by my food porn of this spot we ordered very routine eats this evening. My fave was mongolian beef - gosh I hope that was mongolian beef. It tasted like mongolian beef so that's what I'll name it. Made me one extremely thirsty mofo a few hours later but at that moment it was flavorful. The beef tore like it should and the greens still had some crunch which was pleasing. It tasted correct - wish I had kimchi though but that's neither here nor there. Oh, and some floss would've been helpful. Chicken pad thai was meh - it's like I cooked it which is not a good thing. Just very plain and as Paul M. would type underwhelming. I left that for the gents. Everything else you see in my food porn tasted like it should so it's not worth mentioning. Pics speak for themselves. BUT that "cheesecake" you see I swear they made a Safeway run to complete that order. I forgot what dessert that was supposed to be but we did not order a plain cheesecake. BUT NOTE, we did appreciate the scoop of ice cream. Please don't spit in my food the next time we visit - most likely we may have to go back to your place when pops goes to the hospital again. Thank you. -Sarah

The best and most authentic sushi in Montgomery County! I came to this place to watch the USA vs Belgium soccer match a few days ago and the food and service were both top notch. Prices are very reasonable. Even for the bar. Their happy hour specials are great. The owner is also very nice! She gave us samples of a new mango sushi that is a must try! Overall this place is great. You should check it out when you get a chance. I guarantee you will like it!

I have been to Taipei Tokyo many times over the past 7 or so years, and it just continues to get better and better. No matter the type of Asian cuisine you are interested in, this restaurant is sure to please. The wait staff is always attentive and extremely helpful. Whether it be the amazing drinks from the bartending staff, or the friendly faces and help the wait staff provides, you are definitely going to be happy and full when you leave. The reason I am writing this review now is because I was there recently for a large birthday party and we were made to feel as though we were the only party in the entire restaurant. The service was phenomenal, the food was delicious, and they ensured that we had an amazing night! Thanks Taipei Tokyo!!

I previously gave this place 2 stars, I'm reviewing it again because my brother and I had dinner here he really likes their general T Chicken. I swore I would never come back because of all the bad experiences. However our server a young Asian man was beyond awesome! He really knows how to serve on people, and constantly kept checking up on us. I order sushi because it's the only thing I didn't hate, however my brothers dish was surprisingly really delicious even though he's paying over $20.00 for Chinese because he was charged extra for white meat. I would definitely order any chicken dish with white meat well worth. it. The server here really changed my mind about my previous experience. However I think for a Chinese restaurant they are way over priced and need to reevaluated their prices. I would come here more often for lunch if it was more affordable. I don't want to pay $15-20 for lunch

I had the green curry chicken for lunch. Came with a choice of soup -got the egg drop. Both were fabulous. Also had the garden roll which was also great. Service was prompt and friendly. Food came out quick. Price was reasonable. But I wouldn't get sushi here.

  • Christine W.

The food is extremely overpriced considering the portion they give you. I can think of plenty of other Chinese places that has better quality food, portion etc. the Sushi is decent but each roll is about $15. Mind you they do charge for everything.

Sometimes I forget why I refuse to go back to certain restaurants...and then I go and then I'm like "dammit! I remember now!" This was one such visit. It was Sunday night and we were starved. We decided to give Taipei Tokyo a try since it's been so very long since we've dined here. Then we started looking at the menu and remembered why. Then we got the food and made a vow that I *must* write this review ASAP so that I will never forget. I got the Korean Spicy Noodle Soup. Ok...not to be an @$$, but seriously, I was comparing it to instant noodle...and wishing that we just stayed home and had instant noodle instead. The beef was tough and stringy, the veggies were cooked to the point of mush. The "spicy" broth was weak and spiceless (to the point where I had to ask them to bring me some chili sauce just so there would be flavor)...and completely without any richness of flavor. However, I am giving an extra star for the great service. We were checked upon several times, and our waters were meticulously filled. We thought about saying something about how bad the soup was, but decided that it wasn't something that they could fix (it's not like they could bring me out a new bowl of soup...the basic recipe of the soup was just bad). Well...here's my reminder - never again.

The food is bland with a Capitol B. I had miso soup that I added soy sauce or to make it palatable. Miso when done right has a slightly nutty flavor, this had the flavor of dishwater. The chicken lo main was also equally tasteless even with adding soy sauce. It was the same quality as you would get for a cup of noodles style lo main. I also was surprised how expensive it was for such low quality! We won't be back .

This restaurant is really close to my work and so as a result my office likes to order from here frequently. Over the last couple years, I noticed that their fish quality has gone downhill. In the past, my go to lunch order was the golden fire maki roll with fresh salmon. This roll just isn't the same. I don't know if they are using a different quality of salmon, but it doesn't taste as fresh as it used to be. So most recently, I started ordering their two roll lunch special which is 2 rolls for about $9. The last couple times I tried their spicy tuna crunch roll, salmon and avocado roll, eel and avocado roll and spicy shrimp roll. I'd say the best things are their cooked options. I don't know why but the raw fish has started to taste weird to me. And one out of the 6 times, I had the worst pains in my stomach for hours. If my office orders, I normally stick to cooked rolls or their Thai green curry which is pretty good. They use a lot of coconut milk, so it's very heavy. But otherwise good in flavor and portion wise. At some point, their prices increased and then were decreased. I'm not sure if they felt they were losing sales or if it was an error. The prices for everything are still pretty high compared to other places in the area, but they do feature lunch specials which is a plus. Overall, they are a tad overpriced. And the food is decent. But not the absolute best. They offer delivery which is a plus. The delivery guy is always very nice, but some days their delivery can take anywhere up to an hour and a half. So be prepared to wait anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. There is no rhyme or reason to it. When ordering over the phone, the employees are usually pretty nice. There are a few individuals that could be a little nicer, but what can you do. My co-workers order their raw fish and all have mixed feelings. Half of them like the fish quality and the other half hate it. So all in all, it's a toss up.

This is the only restaurant that is regularly empty in this shopping center and there is a good reason: it's truly mediocre, overpriced food. I got the shrimp and vegetable tempura and my husband got the panang curry. My husband's diet coke was $3! We were both so hungry we just wolfed everything down but it was not pleasant. Our meals came with soup and we both got the Hot and Sour. It had zero spice and so was Just Sour Soup and incredibly gelatinous. There's really no reason for a business of such poor quality to be in this shopping center; every restaurant other than Taipei in the Fallsgrove center is a solid 3 stars or above (though I have not been to Mama Lucia yet).

The food here is fine but OVER priced! I've always thought this and have only gone twice, both bc I went w/a grp to celebrate a birthday and it was the birthday lady's choice. I wouldn't go on my own choice bc their prices are a good 30-50% higher than other Asian restaurants nearby.

The food is awful and way way overpriced like $18 for a chik entree. Rediculous and disgusting. Stay away !!!

I have been working in the area for many years and have noticed this place but never thought to go in until one day I was with a friend and she decided that she wanted some sushi. She's addicted to sushi!!! I on the other hand don't care for it. Anyway, we go in and I was convinced that I wasn't buying anything. I noticed how empty the place was which really made me not want to buy anything. However, I decided to get the general tso chicken. It was over priced and a soggy mess!!! Then they had a nerve to say that white meat would be extra. I thought that since the mess was already $16, it would come with white meat. She got the sushi and didn't like it. She felt that it was overpriced and not worth it. I doubt I will ever frequent this place again!!

They're very efficient in handling the lunchtime crowd. There's always someone around to take orders, get the check, etc. The food was quick. As someone suggested, the hot and sour soup was pretty okay. The rolls were a nice idea, but I wonder if the sushi chef eats the sushi himself? They were so loose that they were falling apart when you lift them up.

They fail on both ends. Chinese was not tasty. Sushi wasn't fresh. I can you go wrong with Chinese, but they failed miserably. As for the sushi, I'll leave it up to your imagination. I don't know how they opened 3 locations.

I decided to grab some dinner from here to go. No one was in there, and that should have been the first sign. I decided to get some crunchy spicy tuna roll and the vegetable dumplings. I was highly disappointed. The sushi was blah and so were the vegetable dumplings. My friend decided to get the general tso chicken and was disappointed as well. A lot of breading and little chicken. I've had waaaaayy better sushi at other places. I spent over $20 for nothing. Avoid this place if you can.

Not withstanding the mixed reviews, I like Taipei Tokyo's Rockville location. This place offers a great variety of Asian food--from traditional Japanese cuisine to Thai and Chinese entries. From Thai, their solid flavorful lemongrass beef is absolutely delightful, though the pad thai leaves something to be desired. From Japanese fare, the crunchy spicy tuna roll is lovely and rather sizeable but keep away from the spicy yellowtail roll that, to my horror, achieved its spiciness from a dab of hot mayo on top. If this wasn't takeout, I may have been tempted to feign an allergy to eggs (a component of mayo). While I am still working my way through their menu and am looking forward to the soups, it's too bad that TT is on the pricey side and does not offer much in terms of deals for lunch ($10 for 2 rolls is not much of a price break).

its ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING FOOD TAKE MY WORD FOR IT..sickening...its just terrible, it tastes dirty, tastless, feels like they cook in dirty oil, sickening sushi...huge mistake to go there i ate because i live across it. DISGUSTING

The food seems to be over priced and on the bland side! As an example, I ordered orange peel beef with hot & sour soup. The soup had almost no flavor and has hot (spicy). The main entree had only 5 small pieces of beef super hvy on sauce. The beef had almost no flavor!

Just getting into the love of Sushi. Good lunch options which I liked. I was able to try something new!

I've been here a couple of times for lunch, once for dinner. I could consider this a lunch place. The sushi is good, love the egg drop soup. I've had the Thai iced tea, but $5?! Per cup?! I have other places where I can go to get that. The one time I came was for dinner with my kids. However they see no need for a kids menu. So I ordered them chicken fried rice for $11. For me, that's a lot for some fried rice. I kept to my sushi and soup combo. Still decent. So I recommend this place for chit chatting with coworkers or need a really good sushi. Otherwise, skip it.

Very Disappointed... My husband and I were very disappointed that a cup of mediocre tea is $2.50, you don't get anything with your entrée... what Chinese restaurant doesn't even give you a scoop of white rice.... Taipei Tokyo I guess... WAY overpriced for what you get. We sure won't go back...

This is a great place where you can fill your craving for Asian food across multiple cuisines. The sushi selection is very good and I love their stir fried yaki udon. The thick chewy stir fried noodles are so good! My other favorites include the chow fun noodles and an awesome crispy beef dish. Finish the meal with one of their specialty ice creams. Sometimes they have red bean or green tea ice cream, which are nice treats.

My fiancee and I both like this restaurant for lunch. Its quick and the food has been consistently good. The hot and sour soup is completely worth coming here for, just for a bowl. My fiancee is from China and hates most American Chinese Restaurants. Her strongest complement is: "not too bad". Well, she likes this place for a quick lunch, not that she loves the Chinese menu, but the mix of Asian foods have a good balance and are complementary. We normally order one of the Thai curries which are pretty good and then some random dish. The Chinese side is mainly your normal American fare, but is prepared well, not too saucy and I've found it consistent. The sushi is pretty good too, not top of the line sushi but it's good. I have been to this location a number of times and I had never read any reviews. I was shocked to see such a low score for this place. However after reading the reviews it seems like i was able to miss all the landmines this place has around it.

I wish I could give this place no star. I ordered a pad thai with seafood and it was absolutely tasteless! They load up in noodles and not much protein and sauce. It tasted like those instant microwaveable asian noodles. Maybe those are even better than this one. BLERGH! Please avoid this place so they can close and a new more authentic and fresher restaurant can open here.

  • Bubbles T.

The service here is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! There was a bug in the bowl of noodle soup we ordered. Upon notifying the manager, the manager's response was that it is quite normal for bugs to be found in vegetables! (Ummm....okay?!?) The manager then proceeded to state that since some of the noodle soup had already been eaten, no compensation whatsoever would be given!!! In response, the person in our party who ordered the noodle soup asked if they would like him to throw up the portion of noodle soup that was eaten HAHA!!! Take your business elsewhere! This place DOES NOT know how to treat its customers!

  • Sylvonna R.

I can only judge their Thai food (and as an addict of Thai food I think I am a good judge) and based on my one visit...I wouldn't try it again. Tastes nothing like Thai food, gives small portions and is a bit pricey for the type of service provided. My suggestion...find somewhere else.

  • Francesca R.

This place is near my work, and I've tried it three times. Once for sit-down, twice for carry out because the service was SOOO SLOW when I dined in that I didn't want to risk being away from work that long again. The food is mediocre at best, and WAY overpriced. Their "lunch special" includes soup, but only if you dine-in, if you carry out it's an extra charge. Don't waste your time or your money here.

We moved here from LA and this quickly became one of our favorite restaurants. My wife and I have gone there for dates, had them cater parties, and will take visiting friends and family. The service has always been very friendly and considerate. They've dealt well with our special requests, even my ultra-low sodium diet, and the food is always quick, flavorful, and satisfying.

Absolutely love this place! It's a trek for me to get out to Rockville but totally worth it compared to places similar but closer to me by like Cafe Asia. The sushi is fresh and delicious. Their specialty rolls are awesome. The TT Maki roll is my favorite, just thinking about it makes my mouth water! Everything else I have eaten here is delicious my favorites being the Chinese dishes and the sushi but you really can't go wrong with whatever you order. I've been here on a date and with a large crowd and the service has always been great and the food is awesome for the price.

Very very mediocre food. Had Pad Thai with tasteless shrimp. Some seasoning was missing. Chicken Moo Shu a little better. There must be better Asian food around here!

As a visitor to Rockville, I was staying at the Hilton Garden right down the street. This restaurant is conveniently located in a restaurant/shopping center. Parking is ample and easy to get to. Atmosphere is nice and clean. I ordered the Salmon Skin roll, Red Dragon Maki roll, and the Rainbow Maki roll. The ingredients were very fresh. My favorite was the Salmon Skin roll - it was perfection! Taipei Tokyo also serves non-Japanese food, which I didn't get to try. Thumbs up! If I am ever in the area again, I would definitely return for a second time!

You would think as a chain, the food/serving would be consistent. But the Taipei Tokyo owners tried to make this an actual "restaurant." The Taipei Tokyo in Rockville Pike is just order up front and get your food handed to you with plastic numbers on your table. Simple, and it kind of makes Taipei Tokyo a little bit different than the other places. But as a restaurant with actual waiters, the Shady Grove location just felt different in a bad way. Then it becomes confirmed when you look at the menu prices. Really? When I think Taipei Tokyo, I think not the best food, but hey, it's not going to be that expensive. But when you come here, the prices just shock you....Why would I pay $14 for a Chinese dish from Taipei Tokyo? No thanks. I'll go to a good Chinese restaurant if I want to do that. I'm not bitter at the Rockville Pike Taipei Tokyo. I'm bitter at the Shady Grove one for trying to make it seem "chic" when it's really not.

I was staying at the new Hilton Garden Inn a block away in Rockville, MD. The resturant is conveniently located within walking distance. Since it is a mix of Chinese, Japanese and Thai don't expect much. I got the eggplant with garlic sauce and the small portion was large. The tempura veggies are mostly batter - I would avoid in the future. If you have a craving for Asian food, but not a lot of time...this is the place!

  • Miss T.

I was craving sushi and in the area, so I thought I'd give this place a try again, despite being pretty disappointed in my last visit. Bluh. Wish I had trusted my instincts. The food is incredibly overpriced for small portions. The servers are surly, never cracking a smile. I asked for lemon for my water, and was presented with ONE tiny slice of lemon. The sushi is so sloppily made that almost every single bite fell apart the minute I lifted it up with my chopsticks. I could not believe that they put mayonnaise in the crab for California roll...the texture was really chewy, too. Gross! Tempura shrimp seemed stale. The hot and sour soup was okay, but the noodles were really stale and tasteless. Totally lame, would never go again!

  • Beau R.

I ate there with some friends and enjoyed the sushi. It was a little more expensive and smaller portions than I expect, but the food was still good. Places that serve multiple ethic foods (Japanese, Chinese, Thai) often don't do a very good job of authentic food. I don't like Chinese food, but my wife does (we trade off whether we eat Chinese or Burritos), so we could find something amenable to the two of us here. What was interesting about this shopping center restaurant was that they had a bar. I thought it was strange to see a bar and then a Safeway across the parking lot. It was yummy and hit the spot after a long day.

Boo, should've checked yelp before heading over here for lunch. I was craving veggie rolls, so when my friends suggested meeting for lunch in Falls Grove I thought "perfect!" and suggested meeting here. But it was not a good choice, starting with the main reason I wanted to go. The rolls were ok, but just... ok. They were kinda sloppy and just uninteresting - even the tempura rolls, which I usually love, and appreciate when they're an option. They were very pricey for 2 rolls ($9.25) and that was for the "lunch special" which didn't come with anything else. I can go to the place here in Rio (whose name escapes me atm) and get 2 rolls, salad, and soup for the lunch special of $8.50. My friends' tempura and drunken both looked nice; I didn't get any feedback from them on how they were. Everything was pretty expensive, at least a couple dollars more than the places here in Rio, so I see no need to venture out again when I can get better and cheaper food here. Service was crazy slow as well.

This place used to be good but unfortunately its gone down hill the past few years. Sushi just doesn't taste like high quality sushi should (and did).

I'm going to keep this as short as possible. I've been here twice. First time, I had the hot spot noodle soup-- it tasted Okay. Mediocre at its best. But the service was horrible. The server didn't care, didn't even ask for refill, waited for 10 minutes to get the check (it wasn't even busy), looked hung over, etc. Okay, so I would've gave it 2-3 stars. But when I went back for the second time, not only did my Pad Thai come out DRY and weird looking, but my mom's chinese dish (I forgot what it's called) came out extremely salty. We complained, and the waiter had the nerve to get an attitude. In conclusion: crap. Food is inconsistent and is not that even good. Service is crap. The only okay thing is probably the area. Other than that, it's crap.

I have been to Taipei Tokyo before and my best experience has been with carry-out. Portions are very small here. My recent experience was that we went there at 9 p.m and the restaurant closes at 9.30 . The waiter told us in a very condescending manner that they only serve carry-out. Whats up with that ? If I owned this restaurant a 9.30 closing means any guest can come in till 9.30. Sorry Taipei Tokyo if I come to you it will only be for carry-out.

While I am and WAS a huuuuge fan of this restaurant...I am now no longer!! I recently noticed a sushi chef coughing in the sushi area..where they actually make the rolls and bento boxes etc..I decided to talk to the manager about it..well, he listened..but, I noticed that afterwards, when he had walked back to one of his employees(I think)..they both had a laugh. I do NOT think that he took me seriously at all! I do NOT plan to come back again.(even after I told him that I looved this place!! )I am really upset..because I had really loved this restaurant..and THAT alone, totally turned me off! (I had explained that the germs could get everywhere..and that the chef never once covered up his mouth!) I also said that not only did "I" NOT want to get sick..but, I am sure that his other customers didn't wish to either! He didn't seem to take me at all seriously! I came sooo close to mentioning this to the chef himself..but, decided that I really should be mentioning this to the manager instead... Gee! I DON'T think that it helped at all, what do YOU think?!?!? Be careful...they may NOT have fixed this issue...so, you are walking into a restaurant that may or may NOT get you quite sick!!

Food is ok. Service fairly bad. I like the noodle soups though; simple, filling, comfort food. Yesterday I tried something different, Taiwanese Style noodles. The menu listed bokchoy in it, but I couldn't find any in the dish. The item had no personality. We sat around for quite awhile before anyone noticed we'd been seated. The waiter barely checked up on us. I ordered a coke with the meal. After I had drank it all, I noticed the ice was a bit weird looking. I look inside. I find a plastic disposable drink cap in my cup. I have no idea how it got there. You would think I would have seen it earlier, but it was clear, and of course, I wasn't exactly checking the drink for random pieces of plastic. I'm giving Taipei the benefit of the doubt; I'm going to go with the relatively better experiences I've had here in the past and give them a 2, instead of the definite 1 star meal I had last night.

Another asian restaurant that is trying to do everything. Frankly speaking the only appealing thing to me was the sushi bar. I ordered the Yakisoba with seafood it was soaked in oil and there's more onions than noodles. My bf has this hope with Thai curries at non-Thai restaurant and it always taste like crap. I wanted to try it numerous time and when I finally did I was disappointed. The wait staff OMG is like they are right out of Taipei or China they were so rude and short with everything. The waitress came over so many times while we are trying to eat to see if she could clear the table - it wasn't even busy!

I love Taipei Tokyo. Being 1/2 Chinese and also a lover of sushi, I like to take a large group of friends, order a bunch of different foods of different ethnicities, and kill a bunch of cravings at once. All the sushi is good, but this place's specialty rolls are killer. When I'm solo, the noodle soups are hot, flavorful, and satisfying. I always find something I want here, and all of my friends love it.

  • Meg P.

Just awful! The tamago sushi wasn't just cold but actually slightly frozen! My eel don bowl was pathetic - clearly it had been sitting in the fridge before they brought it out to me. My husband's Chinese fare was bland and room temperature. Even the broccoli was slightly frozen. Adding insult to injury the bill was $40 for 2 entrees & 1 order of tamago sushi. In Rockville where anyone can get great Asian food for a reasonable place, Taipei Tokyo should not be on anyone's list.

We ate here 3 times and everytime the service was slow or got the order wrong. How long does it take to get the check? Come on people.

The food was very good. Fresh and delicious sushi. A variety of choices of Asian food. Service left something to be desired. Of the 5 of us two dinners came out late (of course, it was the slowest eaters that got their food last). I would recommend Taipei Tokyo as reasonable Asian dining experience.

I am Taiwanese-American (I actually speak Taiwanese and not Mandarin) and miss my mom's food dearly (Bob's noodle 66 is my mom's favorite Taiwanese in the area). This shady grove location does too many types of Asian food. Like other yelpers have advised, stick with the Chinese/Taiwanese dishes only. My favorite on the menu is the steamed pork dumplings which are generously filled with flavorful pork and have a thick chewy dough (I hate dumplings made out of wonton skins). The fried rice is pretty good and I usually get the shanghai style (curry) with chicken (fairly generous amount of white meat chicken). Moo goo gai pan, Kung pow chicken, and Taiwanese style rice noodles are pretty good. TT noodle soup is okay but WAY overpriced. The service has improved slightly. I remember boycotting them 5 years ago for being incredibly rude on the phone. A year later, I had a serious hankering for some good dumplings and called for another delivery order. They have really improved their service and I haven't had a problem since.

I don't like this place too much. I don't think this is a generalization -- the food of an ethnic restaurant is usually directly proportional to the percentage of diners who are of that ethnicity. (Did I word that right? It took 3 tries to figure out how to write that sentence.) I ordered their pad thai once, and I haven't seen many restaurants mess this one up...but Taipei Tokyo did. And that tells me that they didn't try very hard. If you really need your Asian food fix and don't care too much about authenticity, then this is the place for you. If I have to recommend something, I'll recommend the TT noodles, udon, and their lunch specials are a pretty good value. But you're probably better off going to any of the other places in this shopping center - like Moby Dick's, Panera, etc.

The service really was dismissive - yet efficient - here. I like the food, though. The combination of different kinds of Asian food is pretty weird, but the sushi was very fresh and good. I ordered Thai Tom Yung soup as well, which was pretty good. Most of the food in this shopping center is pretty heavy, although I like a few of the other restaurants, so if you're in the mood for a lighter meal and don't over-order, you can definitely manage that here. I haven't been to the other locations so have no point of comparison, but I'd go back here for lunch.

Another convenient location in Fallsgrove shopping plaza. Quite sizable and not very crowded on Friday evening. Decided I'd be pedestrian and order the hot and sour soup to start. It was bland; it did not make my senses stand up and take notice. Also, I asked the server what she'd eat and she recommended the Thai Basil. I like basil so I went with the beef. Too bad. I wish I had more rice to sop up the super salty entree. At least I had a Sapporo to soothe my aching palate.

Any restaurant that has a Chinese and Japanese city in the name indicates that it's probably trying to do too much. I've been here several times with co-workers, who are intent on ordering the so-called "sushi." Maki rolls, dynamite rolls, crunchy spicy mayonnais-y stuff that don't exist in sushi restaurants in Japan... but it's popular with the non-Asian clientele. If you end up here and are into authentic asian, go for the pork chop rice bowl (pai-gu-fan). I'm not taiwanese, but it really hits the spot! It's a hot bowl of rice (like a Korean "dohl-sot" or stone pot), with spinach, a fried egg, a brown sauce and a decently sized fried pork chop. It's a great filling meal, a lot of rice and protein. Watch out though the pork chop is NOT boneless! When I go there I will always order the Pork Chop Rice Bowl; but as a rule, I try to avoid Chinese / Taiwanese / Thai / Japanese restaurants.

Price is way to high. They try to be the jack of all trades with all Asian foods, and the result is: the Thai isn't real Thai, Chinese is OK, but I give it to them- the Sushi rock

    (3)
  • jenn h.

They try to do too much at this location. Don't let it scare you away from the original Taipei Tokyo, though! Really, Thai chicken kra pow should NOT taste the same as Chinese kung pao chicken; they shouldn't even be sold in the same restaurant, for that matter. If they start trying to do Korean food along with the rest of their Asian dishes, I'm gonna have to hurt someone! Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
