Such a great ramen place! So many soup options ranging from volcano to miso. The portions are huge! They also give you the meat on the side so they give you a hefty portion. The ramen ranges from 10-12 dollars which is s decent price. Service is always upbeat and staff is friendly too so that is totally a plus, woo!

Seaweed salad was a bit underseasoned. Grilled beef tongue was overcooked, but the dipping sauce made the error less noticeable. I usually don't care for shumai, so the fry on the crispy shrimp shumai added nice texture. Cha shu bun was tasty and reasonably dressed, and I'd be willing to try bulgogi with spicy mayo even though the bao tore at the seam. Red Dragon roll was liberally mayoed, fairly fresh. Ramens featuring protein had the meat served on the side, presumably to preserve sear and flavor. Half a soft-boiled egg, a fish cake, a sheet of nori which quickly wilted in the steam, bamboo, decent noodles, and a rich tonkotsu broth. I preferred the kalbi over the grilled pork belly. Ice cream float was served in unsweetened coffee and garnished with a frozen green tea mochi. Good service, clean single-occupancy bathrooms, okay food at agreeable prices. Fusion format across the Asian spectrum that doesn't go too overboard. Presentations done on loose greens or nests of shredded daikon. Future hit list: takoyaki, unagi dumplings, grilled baby octopus, kaki fry, rock soft shell crab, curry tonkotsu set, chirashi deluxe, unadon.

I have had some of the best appetizers at Maki. They have a good selection and all of them are very flavorful. The Ramen here is not bad either. The volcano ramen is quite spicy. A little too spicy for my liking. But none the less it tasted pretty good. If you are in the mood for some Japanese beer and a few good appetizers, then Maki is a good choice.

This is for a Chirashi review!! Walked in at around 7PM on a Friday evening to find it crowded - the restaurant itself is tiny though (still takes reservations!). I can't eat gluten so I ended up getting the regular Chirashi (sashimi on rice), while my boyfriend got the ramen with pork belly. We also got marinated baby octopuses that were chewy and sweet although now that I think about it... we had neither ordered it, nor was it included in either of our dishes...?! I tend to rate my sushi restaurants based on their miso and freshness/thickness of the sashimi, so here goes! The miso score: 6/10 - a bit too bland, your average miso Freshness of sashimi: 8/10 - didn't smell fishy like old sashimi does Thickness of sashimi: 9/10 - they were quite thick! The reason why I give a 3/5 rating is because for the $14.95 of Chirashi I get here, I can get an entire bowl (feeds two people) of sashimi (at least 4x the sashimi), rice, lettuce, garlic, peppers, Korean pepper paste sauce and miso at Yuraku in Germantown. So since I can't quite call myself a 'fan' of Maki, I personally can't will myself to give more than 3 stars. My friends have raved about the ramen here though!

I'm surprised this place has such a low rating. The food was pretty good, there was a large portion size, and the prices are cheap in comparison to other ramen. We started with the salmon sushi platter. It was alright. Wasn't the most fresh salmon I've had. Worth a 3 star rating. For ramen, I went with the spicy miso with galbi and kimchi. This warranted a 4 star rating for the restaurant. The meat was overcooked for my liking, but regular for bbq ribs at restaurants like these... next time I'll ask for medium-rare. Switched out my sprouts for corn and added an egg (super rip-off for the egg btw...) Saki comes in a fancy bottle that has ice separate but still chills the alcohol. Service was good.

What is up with the service? Sat down, took our hot water and tea order, 10 minutes go by, they clearly forgot about us bc the waiter is now wiping down empty tables...! I am literally writing this review as I wait for my salmon roll! It's been over 30 minutes since we ordered. My friend is 90% done with his ramen already and I still have no food. Also, did they make their bowls smaller bc the last time I had the ramen I couldn't finish and this time his bowl looks like it's half the size. One star bc the actual food (if you ever get it) is not bad. Another star because they were extremely apologetic when made aware of the delay. I asked them to cancel my order because we were late. They made it in 5 minutes and packed it to-go for me on the house.

Good vibe, good ramen, and have alcohol! I like this place because they have lots of yummy toppings! My fav is the volcano broth with grill pork! They also have other items beside ramen. More choices for some people that don't like just ramen. The place a little small. So if you have a big group be prepared to wait a little. My new spot in the area! Definitely coming back!

Came here during lunch and had the Wednesday lunch special ramen and califonia rolls. The ramen had roasted pork with spicy miso soup, and i added pork belly and an egg with a side of kimchi. The ramen was really good and i really liked the spicy soup base, it had the right amount of spice to it and not overly salty. The pork belly was tender and melted in my mouth and adding the kimchi to the soup gave it a nice tang. The california roll was good too and the service was quick and polite. I definately would come here again.

As they started having improvements to the menu, the quality of my favorite hits have started to deteriorate. Order the ramen here as it is hot, delicious, flavorful and come in a generous portion. There is tons of variety. My favorite is the braised pork belly which is an ode to Chinese 5 spice flavors. Authentic? Meh. Delicious? Yes. The first time I had sushi here, I was very impressed. Fresh, fatty salmon. This time, we ordered a sushi combo to share. Not sure if the knife hasn't been sharpened properly but the octopus was butchered and tough to chew. The rice, most important part of sushi, was mushy and over cooked. We also ordered eel (Unagi) dumplings to start which are not as good as the veggie dumplings. They are deep fried imparting a greasy feeling vs. veggie was lightly pan fried and delicate. The herb dipping sauce it came with; however, was one of the most delicious concoctions I've ever put in my mouth. The tofu pots have been taken off the menu. It's a shame since some nights I do crave a good soondubu.

We got sashimi, the kalbi donburi and the spicy miso with grilled pork belly. Everything was good except for the rice that came with the donburi. The sashimi was fresh. The spicy miso broth was decently spicy and not salty. The grilled pork belly was really well made. They also give you a lot of it - we got 8 pieces, and it comes in a separate bowl so that none of the flavor has washed into the broth yet. If you take the bowl, you can also pour some of the pork belly fat into the broth. The noodles for the ramen were ok, tasted slightly overdone. The kalbi was also really well cooked and seasoned. But the donburi rice was really dry and hard, so we didn't eat that much of the rice. Atmosphere was fine. Service was nice and attentive.

It took me forever to actually try Maki since I usually wound up getting pho next door. Finally, when I found myself wandering around the pike looking for sushi, I stopped in. The sushi is decent, and the portions are big (8 pieces per standard roll instead of 6), and they have some good lunch specials. For about $8 you get 2 rolls off of a list, and miso soup. A few pieces did seem to have sort of mushy rice, but it was still edible for the most part. Service isn't extremely fast, but it's not excessively slow. However what you get may be inconsistent. Last time my to-go lunch special came with miso soup, but the next time I only got sushi -- no soup. Overall the price is good, and the environment is nice. I'm told their ramen is really good, and will probably try that out next time instead.

Came in on a Friday night and it was busy but didn't take long before we got our table. They have a rather large menu for a sushi/ramen house. You choose what you want in your bowl, and either udon or ramen, then choose what broth you want. My fiancé got the bulgogi ramen with the volcano broth. Since I can never finish all the noodles, I just paid for an extra side of the broth and had some of his noodles. I also got a side of galbi short ribs which was a pretty decent serving size! The only reason why I gave them 4 stars is because I thought it was on the saltier side. Maybe I'll give it another try one day.

I would say Maki is pretty solid! Don't overlook this place, though there are much better ramen joints imo - primarily from places that only serve ramen on the menu. But maki offers more than just pretty decent ramen. Their takoyaki is bomb, as are their various baos. However - this place probably has the best ramen for a sushi restaurant. (I feel like most sushi restaurants in dmv area don't deliver as well in the ramen category)

Amazing service and amazing food! We came here because the pho place next to it was full. The decision to come to Maki was a great one. No regrets! When you come to Maki get the bulgogi bun. We asked the server what type of bun he recommends and he recommended the bulgogi bun to us. All I can say is that it was really really good. The kalbi is pretty good to, it's not fall-of-the-bone kalbi, but the flavor is there. Don't forget to get ramen and udon too, this place has pretty good tontaksu base, try it!

Their spicy miso ramen is the best! This is my go-to place for ramen. Anyone who knows me knows I'm not a broth person (give me any noodle soup dish and I will eat everything but the actual soup) but I slurp their spicy miso soup like it's nobody's business. I've brought several people here, each ordering different ramens and no one has been disappointed - they love the ramen too! Their buns are also very good. The dough has a nice texture. I heard their sushi isn't good so I haven't tried it yet. My mouth is watering right now as I write this review...

It's cheap, Staff are nice, and it tastes like home!! I'm was raised in Japan so I am pretty picky when it comes to my Japanese food. I'm always a bit on the fence when the chef isn't Japanese but they have it down here. The takoyaki has the right taste and seems like it's made in house. But what got me here was the RAMEN. You can build your own or order one of their specials. All of their broths are good, noodles have the perfect bite to them, it reminds me of home! I am coming back for sure.

Very delicious ramen, as well as sushi! Last time I went, I had the sushi bowl. Not a big fan of it, so I'll stick to regular sushi next time. But service is great!

Seriously, there is something about this place and crap service. EVERY SINGLE TIME I GO. I had a livingsocial that my sister got me, and I took my boyfriend on a weekday. We were one of maybe 3 tables in the restaurant when the waitress took our order (and I really did not like her attitude. Please act a little less like you're better than this place, if you don't want to work there, don't). Maybe 5 minutes after our order, she came over and asked us if we got our check yet....I'M SORRY...SAY WHAT. Trying to kick us out before we even got our food? Nice try. When our food finally came, we needed utensils, and she brought chopsticks but no spoon. I asked for spoons and she gave me this annoyed look. She also didn't bring the spoons to us, and I had to ask another waiter/manager for the spoons. I came back AGAIN over the weekend because my friends wanted ramen. One of the guys (maybe manager) was pretty nice and outgoing and pretty accommodating. But somehow, they were out of so many things. My friend ordered dessert first, but they didn't have the cheesecake.... My boyfriend tried to order the curry soup base for ramen, and they ran out of that too.. SERIOUSLY? One of my friends told the guy that they should offer us something since they were out of so many things we tried to order. I don't know if they would have done this had she not told him that, but the manager guy brought us a tray of mochi ice cream. I'll give them points for that, but again, would they have if she didn't say that? we were trying to split the checks and the guy was like "oh I know what you guys ordered", but it turns out he didn't because he messed up the checks and put my order on my friend's instead of my boyfriend's. The food is decent, but the service...I don't know why it is terrible every time I go. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Went here when they opened and let's just say I don't remember it being good or bad. It didn't leave an impression either way. So, one of my friends mentioned that he went recently and that it has changed and is so much better. In searching to satisfy my cravings for ramen without having to drive to NYC or DC, I tried this one out again. And boy was I glad we did! Unlike Temari, the charsiu was tasty and not dry! Ordered the kakuni belly volcano Tonkatsu soup with side of grilled pork belly kimchi. Man, so delicious! However, I want to just try regular tonkatsu next time to taste the pork broth more. Wife ordered the spicy miso which she said was really good. The difference here with their ramen is that the toppings are tasty and soup base not that salty (see Ren's Ramen review). Buns here are scrumptious, soft bun and tasty filling (recommend charsiu over kakuni belly for buns). Kakuni is better in the soup! The Good: - volcano and spicy miso soup are our favs, adding in kakuni belly makes the soup complete. Also, you may need another side of pork belly for meat lovers. - Ask for noodles hard, although they say that's how it comes. - Buns are so good, charsiu buns recommended! IMO, overall better than areas Ren's and Temari for different reasons. - Ren's noodles are really good but broth is too salty, Temaris soup and broth is good but toppings are bland. Value is better at maki too with cheaper prices and more toppings. Not quite NYC good, but great for this area. The Bad: - when it gets crowded, the orders get lost somehow and one occasion we didn't have the gooey egg in our soup! The servers are really nice though and corrected it right away when we asked. Also, they normally charge for substitutions but they made an exception which was nice! The Ugly: - nothing too ugly about good ramen close to my home! Cravings satisfied!

Cha Siu Sapporo Ramen $10 (3/5 NOMs) I'm a noodle fish in a sea of ramen. Exploring Rockville's traditional Ramen scene in DC suburbs. Its a build your own bowl kind of place. You get a choice of 14 different meats or veggies, 5 different kind of soup base, noodles, plus any extras you desire. For our extras, I only care about the egg. Give me egg or else! Well for extra $1. Each ingredient portion fit so well that the dish flavor is very well balanced, maybe even too balanced? Nothing sims to jump out and capture our taste buds, no ups or downs, just very calm. It could be the more traditional side of ramen showing or tasting in this case. Still very enjoyable dish that satisfy this hungry nomster.

Not a really good Ramen place at all. Definitely one of the worst ones I've been to. Rather go to Ki No Spoon or even Temari. The ramen portion wasn't all that much for the lousy price and wasn't that tasty, either. I wouldn't go a second time and waste my money on this joint. A lot of better restaurants out there to get ramen than this bloody place, that's for sure!

Stopped by here on the way home from VA with my mom. Note that my mom is not a huge fan of Asian food or trying anything new, she is the person who literally orders a bacon cheeseburger whenever she can. The parking was iffy as its in a small little shopping center type thing but we managed. The staff is very friendly and helpful so thats a plus, but let's get to the food! To start my mom ordered tempura shrimp which came with a couple very large shrimps, beautifully fried, and some veggies also tempura fried. She loved it and I tried a bit and it was indeed done quite well. I started with an order of takoyaki and it was great! Even though I burned my tongue on the first one because I couldn't wait to dig in, large piece of octopus in the middle, delicious dough and plenty of topping. As for our entrees, mom ordered a teriyaki chicken donburi bowl which looked beautiful and she loved it (I sampled it and the flavor was very good!) I ordered their tonkotsu ramen with added kakuni belly the pork was very tasty and the broth was good. The noodles were also good though the egg was a bit boring but cooked perfectly. I also ordered their continental roll which was VERY good! I ended up having leftovers of everything and eating the rest for dinner later that night it was still tasty.

The only reason why I gave 3 stars is for the food. The food was good but the service was horrible. It took an hour to get our food. The waiter who took our order, came up to us and asked if the other waiter have taken our order. Another thing, a family was seated much later than us and received their food before us. What's going on here?! Good food but I don't think it would be my first choice.

Not bad ramen. We also had their pork belly buns which came out tasty and full of flavor. Service was a bit slow on a sunday afternoon when we were one of four tables.

After eating here a few times (both with and without a LivingSocial deal), I've concluded that nothing about this place alone would merit 5 stars. Nevertheless, the combination of menu variety, reasonable pricing, and restaurant decor make this a great option and collectively add up to a 5 star restaurant. I've had the tonkatsu ramen with pork belly and tonkatsu - the soup is not memorable but the meats that came with it were both delicious. I also like that you can substitute udon noodles into the soup. The sushi rolls here are made fresh and are especially a steal if you get the lunch specials (Philadelphia and salmon/avocado 8 piece maki rolls each for 3-4 bucks!) I've only been here at lunch time, but it has always been pretty empty and service has been decent. I would not come here with high hopes for top-notch ramen (that seems impossible to find anywhere in the DC area), but it is still a good place to grab some solid Asian food. And a coupon or deal makes this an incredibly cheap meal.

A good place in Rockville to get your ramen fix. It's not as good as Ren's but still hits the spot. The takoyaki is always good as was the wasabi octopus appetizer. We tried a few of the rolls and they had some interesting presentations, especially the volcano roll.

Yelp removed my review because "the yelp community felt it didn't indicate clearly my opinion on this establishment". Whatever the f**k that means. So, I'll repost basically exactly what I rated them. I visited this place once earlier this year. I occasionally stop at Pho Nom Nom and wanted to give this place a try. Staff was very friendly and the place was clean. Food was so-so. Not spectacular but not terrible. The udon had a nice flavor to it but overall, I could take it or leave it. I wasn't wowed here but wasn't totally turned off. Would I come back? Sure but I haven't. It just didn't really appeal to me. So, "Yelp Community", is this better? The removed review is basically exactly what I just posted - it was OK, not that great and not bad either way. One thing I really hate about Yelp is how they remove reviews left and right. All reviews should be posted and not removed or "filtered".

Maki is one of my favorite places to go. Every time I would get some roles, spicy pork belly& kimchi ramen with Tonkotsu soup base. I have tired volcano and miso too. They are all delicious, but tonkotsu soup base is my favorite. I'd tried Kaki fry--crispy oysters, which was a bit disappointing for oyster lover like me. They only served three pieces. I'd tried their Buns--cha shu and bulgogi steak. They both are yummy. I recommend the buns along with ramens. I'd never tried their salads, but avocado salad look very fancy. I also enjoy their service. They all are friendly and knowledgeable of their menu.

It's so good to have a volcano ramen on a chilly day. ^^. I never like ramen before coz it's too salty and just taste like a instant noodle. But Maki's ramen totally changed my mind.

I went here yesterday because I really, really wanted to try out some BAO or in other words buns. I never would have found this place if not for Jennifer I, another Yelper. Because of her, I had the opportunity of trying out some buns. I went inside and a whole team of Asians left the place so now it looked a bit empty. Small but cozy and most of the workers there spoke fluent English. I was sat down and given a menu. I ordered a cold Green Tea and got it in about a minute. My waitress then came back and took my order which was: Kakuni Bun, a Tonkatsu broth Ramen, and an order of Uni nigiri. As I was waiting for my food, I look at the tv and the Ravens were playing, however, the tv kept on skipping. And as time went by, the TV got worse and worse to the point where they just turned it off lol. My waitress came back to let me know they were out of Uni. So I instead got their Fatty Salmon nigiri. 1 for 2.75. Not bad. Then she came back again to let me know they were out of the Kakuni Bun... Okay, so I ordered the Spicy Pork Belly Bun. Third times the charm? Never happened, fortunately. I really wanted to try at least their Buns which I did eventually. I got the Fatty Salmon first and ate it by itself without any wasabi and soy sauce and it was DIVINE. If only they put a little more flavoring into the rice it would have been some of the best nigiri I've ever had. It was still really good tho. I then got my Ramen and the broth was fantastic. It was rich in flavor and wasn't too salty. However, when I had the noodles, it wasn't as great. The broth didn't stick to the noodles as they should have and the noodles themselves didn't have the right texture. The ramen was still decent though. I got the Buns last and I was already satisfied but when I first picked up the bun, it felt good. Really good. Like the bun was so fluffy and tender and it wasn't sticky compared to other Asian styled buns. It felt so soft like my ex's behind. Okay seriously though when I took my first bite, I immediately felt happy. A splash of flavors bursting into my mouth like those bubbles you get at a FroYo place. Not really but it was so good that I felt guilty because not enough people know about these buns and how delicious they really are. And even though it was my first time ever having them, I can't wait to go back here and have more, except this time them not running out...... The buns here were truly marvelous. I'm definitely coming back here again soon. Like maybe tomorrow soon because it was THAT GOOD. Service was good there. The ramen was alright but the buns and nigiri were on point.

I love this place. I absolutely love it! Chicken Katsu, Tonkatsu, Char Siu, it's all delicious! The ramen is that best go to food here, but I like their rice bowl and bento boxes too. Basically, you really can't go wrong with much of anything here. It's solid delicious food for a good price. Today, I got the Chicken Katsu rice bowl and my friend got the Chicken Katsu with the Tonkotsu Base. My friend is a funny one because when I asked her if she liked it, she told me that the base was great and it tasted like coconut! Not that it really tasted like coconut, but I think she meant the broth was thick like something else that tasted like coconut? I have no idea. The rice bowl comes with a fried egg, mixed veggies and of course, some rice! It's a pretty good sized meal for lunch and reasonably priced too. The only problem I ever have is that service stinks at the end. We always wait forever for the check, get fed up with waiting and then go to the counter to pay so we can leave. Service otherwise is pretty good.

Might be weird to say this, but I'd like to give maybe 3.5 or 3.75 instead. Overall I was satisfied both in terms of service and food, but I wouldn't call this a GREAT place. Every time I was in the mood for ramen I went to Temari down the road, so I haven't tried this place until now. Overall, it was alright! I got me a cha shu with a shoya (soy sauce base) along with a takoyaki on the side. Funnily enough, I was more impressed by the takoyaki than the ramen! Now I can't say much since I admit I haven't tried many takoyakis in my life, but I was delightedly surprised. The fried taste wasn't so overly oily that'd make you feel sick in your stomach, and the sauce was just salty enough to give it a solid taste. They melted in my mouth! They were also served with a side of what seemed like diced radishes to help you "chase away" the greasiness which was nice. Highly recommended! As for the ramen, the broth was nice and thick, and not so overly salty which would make you not want to finish the rest (like some ramen restaurants I've tried...). However, the most important part of japanese ramen broth in my opinion is finding the right balance between the rich thick base and the cleanliness. In this aspect, Temari's ramen was far superior. Maki's was not so bad though, as I did enjoy the taste, and finished majority of the ramen; I just couldn't finish the remaining broth. Also, Temari's ramen felt more "hearty" to me. They include sprouts, oden, and narutos along with the meat, but Maki's only had the meat! Maybe I need to try more of their other bases? It did feel overall slightly lacking for me. All in all, I was satisfied with my experience. I've had better, but this was not a disappointing alternative. Reasonable prices as well! Next time I come I would like to try the buns, pork belly w/ kimchi, and other ramen bases. I will be coming back.

My boyfriend and I came in on a Saturday afternoon and we were sat a table right in front of the door. I opted for the window bar instead because it was cold when people opened the door. When a corner opened up a waiter happily offered it to us. We got our waters and it tasted like it came out of a fish bowl so I went the whole meal without water. That's my biggest con for this place. I ordered the black dragon roll without avocado and a grilled pork belly with tonkotsu ramen with no veggies but corn. My boyfriend ordered the sashimi sampler and cha su with spicy miso ramen. It took us a while to get our food. The ramen came out first (I was hoping for the sushi first) I got so much grilled pork belly and it was flavorful and delicious! I was expecting it be just bland pork belly that was grilled but it was seasoned and so savory. My ramen was just right. Not too salty not too bland. The soup wasn't watery but wasn't thick. It was perfect. I wish that gave a little more fish cake cause it only came with one but everything else was great. My boyfriend liked his cha su spicy miso ramen. I didn't try any because I don't eat spicy food. Mid way through our bowls our sushi came out. My bf says the sashimi was good. Just your average sashimi nothing special. My black dragon roll was good. But I feel like the sauce may take away from the shrimp tempura that's in it. Overall I would come back again and would love to try more stuff on the menu. I just might bring my own water. Also I would like to see them up thee service game. It wasn't the worst service but it could have been a little better.

Only ordered the Sashimi Deluxe because I was too full from eating a bowl of ramen at Ki No Spoon and Old Kimura (but it wasn't really ramen at Old Kimura... more like water and overcooked noodles) prior to coming here. The Sashimi Deluxe came with a few slices of mackerel (which was AWESOME), escolar, salmon, and red snapper. All the fish was fresh and non fishy. Clean tasting and moist to the pallet. I do however, wish the slices were a little bit bigger. Some of it was sliced pretty thin for a sashimi standard. Otherwise, it's not bad at all.

Just got back from Japan and was looking for some good Ramen. Was very excited to find this place right up the street. They have a huge selection of Ramen and of sushi which is all very good. My complaint is the staff was borderline incompetent. And I am not picky and usually very easy to please. But last night we had to wait half an hour while four different tables just sat there waiting to be bussed. It took everything not to just go clear the tables myself. Also, when you order a beer, bring it out within a few minutes, not twenty minutes. Especially when the beer fridge is in plain view ten feet away. Again it took everything not to just go grab the beers myself. Food was great but everything took way too long. Didn't get out of there until almost 10 o'clock on a weeknight.

I heard about this place from my coworker and she loved it so much she went two days in a row. So I had to check it out especially because there's no good ramen place around the area unless you go into the city. Temari was my go to place in Rockville and its okay there. I must say I was very impressed with Maki. I ordered the cha su spicy miso and it wasn't too salty or bland and right amount of meat for me. My gf who is a vegetarian ordered the veggie broth with vegetables and she really enjoyed it. I can't remember what her bf ordered but we all loved it. We also ordered the pork buns and takoyaki and both were very delicious. I can't wait to go back again and try different stuff.

When this place 1st opened, I hoped that it'd finally be the place that serves good ramen in the area. However, my hope's flatenned once again. When I 1st came in, I was already worried because this Japanese restaurant's run by all Chinese people lol... Pros: Cheap, pretty good portion. Ramen ($9sh) & Bento Box ($10-$11sh) are def a few bucks cheaper than most Japanese restaurants. Bento box's a great value as it comes with some sushi rolls, soup, salad. Cons: Quality of the food. Overall, the food's about average; The ramen's only decent at best. Even though the texture of the noodle's decently good, the broth isn't all that & too salty. I'd only come back for the bento box.

Chicken katsu ramen w/Tonkatsu soup base: I really like how they give the katsu separately instead of in the soup. The chicken katsu had a good amount of chicken (not fatty fillers) and was crispy. The bottom got a little soggy after a while though. The soup was nice and rich - not too salty or watery. The noodles and egg were cooked well too. 4/5 Spicy pork buns: came with 2 and both pretty large in size. The meat wasn't placed very well (the fatty sides were together on one side of the bun with the lean sides on the other) but it was marinated well. I usually consider these appetizers and was a little disappointed that they came a little after the ramen (but it's listed in a separate section from "appetizers" on their menu so I guess it's all right). 2/5 Kimchi: pretty good! Perfect amount of sour fermentation to complement the noodle soup. As for amount, it depends on how much you eat (obviously) but had some leftover (my brother had like one piece). Worth the $2 to freshen up the palate. 4/5 Seasoned bean sprouts: a good palate cleanser as well. Good mild flavor and crunch. Good as a side and in the soup. 4/5 Service: was kind and informative - the guy who seemed to be the manager asked if we wanted the spicy mayo in the pork buns or not (a nice cautious question bc I know some people don't like it when they're surprised with it in pork buns). Server refilled our water cups a number of times (never went dry!) and dealt with the living social ticket and check promptly. Friend greetings and farewells. 5/5

A small Japanese restaurant specialising in ramen, sushi and bento boxes located on Rockville Pike opposite the Wintergreen shopping center. Since it's the very first local ramen place I've tried I have no other ramen place to compare it with. I tasted their ramen with seafood in shoyu broth. The seafood consisted of a couple of fish balls, several shrimp, a couple of mussels, plus half a hard boiled egg. My dining partner ordered ramen with tempura. Both our ramen were served in small bowls compared with the somewhat overwhelmingly large bowls used in most Vietnamese restaurants. Bottom line: my ramen was decent tasting, but it needed more seafood, perhaps some seaweed, and less salt. My dining partner was happy with her ramen, especially the tempura part of it. If a snowstorm doesn't stop me from going to Ren's Ramen in Wheaton, MD, I'll go and try them on Amherst street. Probably next week.

Finally...more ramen places in Rockville! This being said, it's not the best but not the worst of what our area has to offer. If you want a solid bowl of noodles and you can't make it to downtown DC or NY, definitely make sure to stop by here. I like their volcano base the most out of all their offerings (which I do have to say has varied in spiciness everytime I have ordered it!)...and of course what goes better with that than pork belly?? (Which btw has been on their specials menu for at least 2 months if not more!) The staff here are always friendly and always stop by to refill your water/hot tea. I love the wall art that they have up; gives the place character!

Maki is a pretty small restaurant and was packed on a Friday evening. We were promptly greeted upon entering and luckily were seated within five minutes of arrival. On that night, they ran out of buns. Boo! I over heard them tell a few other tables that they were out of buns as well. It seems as if they are a popular item on their menu, so why not order more?! Since they were out of the buns, we decided to get a salmon avocado roll and the crispy shrimp shumai to start. Yikes! The sushi roll was mushy and the rice contained way too much vinegar. The shumai was okay, but it was most likely previously frozen. Eh, so far not off to a good start. Hopefully the ramen is much better! We ordered the Cha Shu ramen and chicken katsu ramen both with the volcano soup base. When the order came out, the Cha shu ramen came with the correct soup, but the chicken katsu ramen came with the tonkotsu soup base. When I pointed this out to the waiter, he went to go check what was entered. He came out to let us you know there was an error in the computer, and the tonkotsu was ordered instead of the volcano. Ummm didn't you put the order into the system?! He definitely didn't seem as if he was willing/eager to correct his mistake, so we ended up just eating it anyhow. The volcano broth wasn't spicy and lacked flavor. The ramen noodles were cooked well and I enjoyed the bbq pork, although there were only a few small pieces of meat. I could have cared less if my soup didn't come with corn as they floated to the bottom anyhow and were forgotten about. Since the volcano soup base is basically their tonkotsu with a blend of hot spices, I expected the regular tonkotsu base to be bland as well. I tried it, and sure enough it was. I did like how the chicken katsu came on the side, though. Besides the ordering error, service wasn't bad. Our glasses were always filled with water and we were checked on a few times throughout our meal. Although there are a good amount of parking spaces around Maki, parking is very scarce. Maki shares the lot with a few other popular dining choices, so good luck with finding a space!

I came here with a group of friends for a friends bday. The place is small and with some trouble they were able to fit all 16 of us. We had to sit in an L shape though but it worked. The ramen is pretty decent here. My husband and I got the tonkasu soup and the volcano soup base. I got the asserted mushroom with pork belly extra and my husband got the fatty beef and pork belly and bamboo as extra. The extra pork belly was great. For 3 bux extra u actually get a lot. The pork belly was good! A little sweet, tasted perfect in the soup. I liked the tonkasu soup better than the volcano. The volcano is not very spicy at all. It's like a 5 on a 1 to 10 spicy skill. My husband was meh towards the fatty beef. My friend got the cha su. They only gave 3 pieces. We also got the pork bun and the spicy pork bun. Both delicious. I thought the pork bun was fattier (which I preferred). The service was okay but they were very nice. My friends pork belly was burned, they gave him an extra plate free of charge. Overall I had a good experience. The price here is very reasonable. I definitely will be coming back

The staff is very nice and helpful. When I visit, I normally get their vegetarian mushroom udon soup. They changed the recipe a few months ago, and the new one is good too, but I really wish they still topped it with fresh lemongrass and ginger. Also, I would like to see a few more vegan options on their menu. What I have had has been good though. I recommend giving them a try.

I actually first came here for ramen around the time Maki first opened, but wasn't initially impressed. Then, admittedly, I forgot about the place for a couple of months. But when my aunt was craving Japanese food for lunch and wanted to try a place she's never been to, after exhausting pretty much every Japanese restaurant in and around Rockville, I took her here and boy, was that a good choice! Maki has an extensive menu featuring all types of Japanese appetizers and entrees from takoyaki, kaki fry, agedashi tofu, etc. to ramen, tonkatsu, curry, and sushi... with some Korean dishes like bulgogi and kimchi-pork belly combos thrown in... + a little Char Siu here and Tom Yum there; pretty much a cross-Asian selection to choose from. I definitely like the shift from the order-at-the-counter to traditional sit-down-style because with a menu that large, it definitely takes a moment to mull over the choices. We came in around late afternoon so it was pretty quiet. We got the takoyaki for an appetizer, which was great (and actually had a good octopus to filling ratio). My aunt got a kimchi and pork belly tonkotsu-based ramen which she really enjoyed (and I stole a little of). A full and flavorful broth (not too salty, but definitely not bland) and a side of really tasty pork belly; she couldn't stop raving about it. I had to agree; after trying all sorts of ramen from Toki Underground to Momofuku, this ramen was pretty dang good. Substantially different from my first bowl of ramen here months ago. As I wasn't as hungry, I got the sashimi bento and the fish was quite good and to my liking. The accompanying gyoza appetizer was pretty good too. Not only was the food great, at a good price too, but the service was wonderful. (Unfortunately) there aren't many times when we leave a restaurant actually raving about how great service was, but today was definitely an exception! The two gentlemen manning the small cafe were not only attentive, but genuinely warm, pleasant and friendly. Overall a lovely experience... we'll be back!

Solid addition to Rockville's dining scene. Had the tonkatsu ramen with charsui. The broth was pretty good and not that salty. They know how to cook their eggs too as it was perfect. The charsui was good but should be sliced thinner. The grilled pork belly was very interesting. Some pieces I couldn't eat because the fat was too tough, but the flavor was good. Parking is a pain with East Pearl crowds taking all the spots.

Here we go again. 2 out of 3 times they have been out of charsui. I got there at 12:20 for lunch. They again told me it's just so popular but this time said it's baking. I asked if it will be done soon- he laughed a little and said no. Ok- I'm not trying to pick on ppl but come on!!!! You've got to plan better than that!! He suggests we get the pork belly. Fine. It was fine. I didn't enjoy it in my ramen. On it's own it was ok. Then he makes a big deal about how they now have white and yellow ramen. Half of us get white, half get yellow. Upon getting our food, we pull up our first bite and everyone has yellow. -_- The broth this time was watered down tasting and not spicy at all. I brought 4 friends with me- it was a little embarrassing. One lived in Japan for a few years. -_- he said it was fine. Not good- but fine. We all did agree that the Takayaki was great. I bought the $10 for $20 deal on Yelp which was awesome. I got the ramen, the belly, the octopus balls, and a ramune soda for $18.50 and they brought me back change. I was surprised by that- most places I expect you use it or lose it. That was pretty awesome of them. Anyway, they have got to fix these types of things. So far I've had a 1 star, 4 star, and 3 star experience. That's too inconsistent.

From the moment my guest and I came here and left, we felt an absolute mediocrity. The food, atmosphere, service, parking, and the tea. Tea! How do you make an average tea? When we ordered green tea, they came with brown tea. The waiter joked that on the packaging, it said green tea. I didn't mind it too much, if only the food was good. Tip: Skip the sushi. Items such as tonkatsu/chicken katsu/Korean steak/pork belly are all served on the side of the ramen (strange, but they said it's to prevent them from being soggy). Ramen soup typically come lukewarm, so make sure to tell them to make them hot and bring them out when the meat is ready. As many reviewers have mentioned, parking is shared with East Pearl and a bunch of other stores, so either go during non-peak hours, or prepare for a possible long walk in the freezing cold. Upon entering, it looked like both a take-out place and a sit-down place. About 90% of the tables were taken (about 7pm on a Friday night), with a fairly breeze cold wind covering the first couple tables when people open/close the entrance door). After we sat down, we looked over the specialty rolls and found nothing to be special. Salmon, shrimp, tuna and eel, all in various unimaginative combinations. The prices of the rolls however, were somewhat reasonable (up to $9.99). We decided to stick with the ramen and an order of the fish cake. We got their November special ramen (pork belly and Korean steak), and each was very average. The soup has a little bit of seasoning, the eggs were cooked perfectly, the pork belly wasn't cooked thoroughly, and the middle of the Korean steak was still a little cold (the sign said medium, but it still shouldn't be cold). The fish cake was not flavorful with a strange mustard-like sauce. In the end, we thought this place was below average for the area (Rockville), and way below average for the entire MD/DC/VA ramen scene. The prices were reasonable and that's about it.

Came back for lunch with some friends and ordered the lunch specials. When we first got there, we were 1 of 4 tables...the other tables had about 4 people each. We had 3...it took 30 mins for the ramen and rice dish and another 15 mins to get my 2 rolls of sushi (I got the California roll and shrimp tempura roll). The California roll was not worth it...it was small, boring, and reminded me of "mall sushi". The shrimp tempura roll; however was pretty flavorful. Just from the wait alone, I probably would not go back. They also really need to staff more than one waiter during the lunch rush. Ain't nobody got time for that.

We had never been here before, as Pho Nom Nom is two doors down, but now I am so glad we did. Pork ramen was spicy and delicious. Creamy crab cakes so hot and fresh, and the sushi made in front of us!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Rockville and the food is amazing for the price. Their ramen noodles come in a variety of different styles and the sushi is excellent as well. In addition, they recently received their liquor license, so you are able to pair your noodles or sushi with hot sake to round out the evening. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Great food and a really friendly staff.

I came here on saturday for the first time with my brother and my cousin and his girlfriend. We decided to get a few appetizers to share while also getting our own bowl or ramen. We shared the agedashi tofu, the takoyaki, and the wasabi octopus. All the appetizers were delicious. The agedashi tofu was perfectly fried and the sauce was really good. It had that balance from sweet soy dashi, the spice from grated daikon and ginger, the sharpness from the green onions and then the fishiness from the bonito flakes. This is one of my favorite Japanese appetizers and this place nailed it! The takoyaki was also perfectly fried and surprisingly light. Just a heads up DO NOT EAT it in ONE BITE! I did that so please dont do that unless you like burning your mouth. The batter was not heavy and was not cloying like other takoyaki's I have had. The octopus was tender, but still had some bite to it. And the amount of the sweet eel sauce and the bonito flakes pulled everything together. The wasabi octopus was one of the better ones that i have ever had. The raw octopus was so fresh, briny, chewy, and rich and then here comes the wasabi to cut through that richness and saltiness. This had the perfect amount of wasabi to octopus ratio. So for the ramen you choose your meat, then your broth, and then your noodles. I ordered the grilled pork belly with spicy volcano tonkotsu broth and ramen noodles. The volcano broth was good. I preferred the regular tonkotsu broth to the spicy broth. The spicy broth took away from the porkiness and goodness of tonkotsu. I dont regret getting the spicy broth, but next time Ill probably stick with the original tonkotsu. However, the grilled pork belly was BOMB! It was so freaking delicious. The char on the pork belly added a slight crunch and smokiness to it while the pork fat just melted in your mouth. This by far was the best meat to get. The service was good. The food was excellent. I cant wait to come back!

Really, really good. The staff is super nice, and the ramen was delicious. I got the miso broth, which is good, but the original pork bone broth, which my husband got, was sublime. We both got ramen noodles, and they were cooked well, and there were plenty of them. The entree choice is served on the side, and I liked that you could add it to the soup, or not, as you preferred. I can't wait to go back here. We went yesterday, and might go for dinner tonight or tomorrow.

I've been here a couple times and I haven't really gotten the best of service. Despite not getting good service I still tipped 20%. The last three times I've ate at maki, the female server never refilled my tea or water. Leaving my throat dry as I tried to finish the remainder of my sushi. I've asked her kindly for refills and she would never swing by. The first time it was okay because I'm a server too and I understand when it gets busy it's hard to manage all 8-10 tables she had. I thanked her for her service and left 20%. Second time, it was a lot busier than last time. And she actually forgot one of my rolls for an hour. And when she finally came to visit my table. I reminded her that I only had two rolls and was missing my third. She apologised and I told it her was no big deal. It was really busy and I totally understand. She gave me and my friend the last roll and we ate quickly. Got our checked and paid. Once again leaving 20%. Third time i come again. The female server greets us and after a few minutes sent another male server to take our order. We ordered. And we're enjoying our food on a nice Saturday afternoon. I asked her for extra spicy mayo. Exactly like this, "may I have a side of extra spicy mayo please". Being polite as a guest should be. It's extremely humid and hot in the restaurant. Maybe the AC broke. It's 1 o'clock it's not busy. Maybe 1/3 full. And I drank my tea and for a while no one came to refill it. So I asked my friend for his water. And I drank that all. And I look around to see if the server could refill my drink. Half an hour later. She comes by with a teapot. Refills the tea cups on the table behind me. Looks at me and goes back to the kitchen. I'm shocked as she went behind the cashier. Looked at me while talking to her coworker and pointed at me. Her coworker stopped by asked if we wanted any desserts. I declined asked for a box. And he came back with the boxes. With a lid that didn't fit. So I had to wait to get his attention. And ask for another lid. And it wasted my time seeing as I've already been eating for an hour and I'm too thirsty to even speak properly. I'm a little annoyed that the female server pointed at me and sent someone else to give us our check when the last three times I've had her. I've been nothing but polite and understanding. And I even tipped 20% despite the lack of service. Three times in a row. I really enjoyed their ramen and sushi. But if this is service they provide to everybody. Then I don't think I'm ever coming back. Nor am I bringing people with me. I always bring different people with me because I enjoy having people try the ramen with me. I will not spread their name in good word anymore. If anything I'll never allow my friends and I to eat there again. I would not recommend coming here. There are plenty of better sushi places with better quality and service in Rockville like Sushi Damo, Sushi House, Niwano Hana.

Very disappointed with this place. I don't know if I just have high expectations or what, but this place just simply does not cut it. The clueless waiter didn't help either. This was my first time being here so I was kind of confused as to why there was a list of meat and then a list of types of ramen. I'm used to meat already in the ramen. I tried asking the waiter but I guess there was a language barrier. If the food was good, then this would have been an irrelevant fact. However, we ended up ordering more than we intended because there was miscommunication between the waiter and us. I ordered the miso based soup and my husband ordered the volcano one. BOTH soups lacked flavor which made everything else taste bleh. Even the meat we ordered with our ramen was so-so. We got the spicy pork belly & kimchi, grilled pork belly, and chicken tonkawhatever. Didn't try to normal pork belly, but the spicy pork belly is not what you get a 'honey pig'. It was something else and tasted weird? Was it even pork? I dont know... It was also a little burnt and lacked flavor. The chicken was pretty good but I kind of attribute that to it being fried. I was so underwhelmed by this place that I even forgot to use my livingsocial coupon here. This place is not worth the $$$. I would not recommend this place to anyone and I haven't even tried the sushi here yet. I think i will be returning my livingsocial coupon and will not come back.

We happened to pass our way here with the intention of going to temari cafe to eat some ramen. I had the pork bone broth ramen with the roasted pork while my girlfriend had the miso ramen with steak. I have no complaints with the ramen, the noodles were nicely chewy and the broth was not overly salty. I also liked the fact that the ramen came with a wooden soup ladle, it was useful with taking in the broth and the noodle. The portion size was decent and filling. My girlfriend's steak was cooked to temperature and delivered separately from the ramen which was a nice touch. We also had the sashimi/sushi sampler. The fish itself was ok (slightly watery), but one of the fish slices had a bone fragment in it which I had to pick out after biting into it. So I will have to deduct a star for that. But outside of this hiccup, this location would have been deserving of 4 stars.

We walked in and we're greeted immediately. The young guy recommend the Goya dumplings as my side because I could not decide between the many choices!! My Chicken teriyaki bento box with white meat, Goya dumplings, and salad ($7.99) was very good. The dumplings were yummy and the salad was of course delicious with the ginger dressing. There were lots of veggies (onions and peppers) and rice with my chicken. The chicken was good but it seemed steamed as opposed to grilled. The Eel with avocado roll ($5.99) was on point. The chicken teriyaki bowl ($5.99) was large with lots of rice and veggies. The chicken looked like white meat (even though we did not have a choice) and was definitely grilled. The Karai (spicy salmon and cucumber & spicy tuna and cucumber) roll ($6.99) came out without the spicy mayo and caviar on top. Turns out there was a substitute sushi chef today but the server brought out a little dish of spicy mayo. The tonkotsu ramen with Kyushu tonkotsu broth...pork bone broth($9.99) was impressive to look at!! The fried pork cutlet came out on a separate plate and was perfectly cooked. The ramen was served with 1/2 an egg and was nice and chewy. My sister thought the broth was very flavorful and perfectly salty. I tried the broth expecting a blast of pork flavor as the menu advertised the "pork bone broth". I could taste pork but maybe because I was comparing it to my Mom's pork bone broth, Maki's was a bit watered down. Don't get me wrong. It did not taste "watery"....I am NOT comparing apples to apples....when Mom makes broth for congee, it is a giant crockpot full of flavor for just 6 people and when Maki makes a giant pot of broth, it is for many. It was nice and tasted like pork (just not like Mom's). While we were waiting for our food, we were comparing the prices for the sashimi dinner to that of Yuyogi's and decided that at Maki Cafe, you pay a couple dollars more but you get a lot more fish for your buck!! We will definitely be back..... Free hot tea comes with your meal.

A reluctant 4 star review. A mere $9 ramen dinner deserves at least that, right? Surprisingly there aren't that many restaurants that serve ramen. Stumbled into Maki Cafe when the pho restaurant close-by had a line out the door, it's blistering cold and I felt like a change was in order. This is a cozy place. The double door opens right into the dinning room, and patrons sure to feel the cold breeze when people come and go. I only observed two people covering the dinning area and service was noticeably slow. Taste? The soup was a bit thick but the ramen was good. Should have gotten an extra order of ramen for $2 because I was still hungry afterwords.

I don't know who are these people who review the Ramen in this place, but not impressed is an under-statement. I wouldn't even say 'nothing to write home about', but more of a 'let me tell my friend don't eat Ramen here!'. I felt like I was really eating Ramen -- like the dollar pack instant ones. I didn't try the sushi, so won't comment on that. I am going to stick with going to Ramen in Wheaton and call it the day...

This is basically the best sushi place in Rockville. And I have been to them all, multiple times. At this stage in my life, I have a good set of requirements for what I need out of a place that I will give my business to. First, the food needs to be excellent. Second, I should be able to enjoy the food in peace with whoever I'm with. This place succeeds on both of these counts. The other thing that I really appreciate about this restaurant is that the sushi chef, Mark, is really passionate about sushi. As a business owner, I appreciate seeing someone who cares about their job. Mark always has new things for me to try, recommendations about what is the most fresh, and has never steered me wrong. This may seem like a small thing, but it's actually the best thing because most sushi places don't really care about the fish and just churn out rolls. It's nice to see a place that understands the variation in fish quality and can advise honestly about their stock. Oh, and this is (last time I checked) the only place in Rockville that has salmon toro as a separate item. Most sushi places just have standard nigiri and if you're lucky you will get a belly piece. Maki has excellent salmon toro, chu toro, etc. It's amazing. Until recently, I only ate sushi here but having tried the wonder that is the pork-belly ramen with volcano base, I am a firm believer. I've tried to eat a lot of the non-sushi stuff on the menu since it is equally as good as the sushi. The service is also the best. All restaurants have issues with turnover so I've seen Maki be short staffed before. But even then, I feel that the service is excellent and the servers do an amazing job. I used to come to this strip mall exclusively for pho nom nom, but since I first tried Maki, I haven't been there since. Maki is my favorite restaurant in Rockville and I encourage everyone I know to go there and tip well.

This is my boyfriend and my new favorite place. When you come in, it never seems to be crowded, which I am confused about because the service is polite, efficient, and the food is crazy delicious without being wildly overpriced. I have now tried several sushi rolls and ramen. I tried the crunchy spicy shrimp and tuna rolls, and my boyfriend has had the dragon rolls. All are pretty large, beautifully plated and delicious. Seriously good. I crave the tuna rolls constantly. My rolls were $5.95 each. WHAT? IN ROCKVILLE?? I also love Niwano Hana across the street, but theirs are more like $7.95 so for sushi, Maki wins out. I also had their miso-based ramen with chicken katsu. So so good. The broth is hearty and tasty, and the katsu was the perfect combination of breading and chicken. I also liked that it wasn't greasy. I have only had Ren's Ramen in Wheaton before this one. Their's is delicious, but the place is so tiny, and the staff is pretty brusque, bordering on rude. If you're not in the mood to be rushed out, try Maki. Definitely worth the trip. The service is really good here too. They take away used plates and refill glasses quickly. Also free tea with your water if you wish. I can't get enough of this place. I crave this everyday. It's worth going out of your way for.

Ordered udon, got ramen, but it was good with the chicken katsu and pretty much hit the spot. Service was better than average, and my buddy had the sushi and liked that very much too. I also had the takoyaki, and it was nice, although it left me wanting a smokier flavor. The TVs were a bit annoying, and the music (something weird and spacy) was louder than I'd like.

Can't stop dreaming about their Udon and Ramen. First time there was superb! The waitress was really friendly and super helpful. She gave us tasteful suggestions and ideas on what to order the next time we visit. Atmosphere was casual. We were the first ones there so it wasn't noisy at all. Food was just the bomb! They give you Green Tea for free! Other places actually charge for that like *cough* Sakura Ramen *cough* and it wasn't even that amazing. I really like the broth and how well cooked the ramen and udon were- to perfection! I ordered Tonkatsu broth and the seafood base. I kind of regretted being adventurous by choosing the seafood; it was good but wasn't as satisfied as I would've liked. I'd suggest sticking to other options besides seafood. My boyfriend got the Tonkatsu base and broth. He was very happy with his order. We also got sushi and it was good but it's definitely more of a Ramen + Udon place for me. I've been searching for the best local ramen places in town and so far, this spot is my top pick. I've been to Ren's Ramen and Sakura Ramen around the area. I'll always go back here for the Udon and Ramen that's for sure!

Came here for the first time today because it felt like a ramen kind of day and I was not disappointed. I had the "tonkotsu" base ramen and added the grilled pork belly. Everything about it was good. It came with a perfectly made soft boiled egg, corn, fish cake, and sea weed. The pork belly was really tasty and had a really nice flavor and the broth was fatty and delicious, just the way a pork based broth should be. Finally, the noodles were well cooked and had a good texture. My husband ordered the the shoyu base ramen with Kakuni meat. The broth was a more traditional flavor and made well, but it was the meat that made his meal. Definitely not your traditional Japanese style flavor, but the Kakuni was mmm delicious with a sweet marinade that made it extra special. One ding was their takoyaki which was deep fried. Not my favorite way to have it but still pretty good. On par with RENs ramen, but because it's closer, it's my new go to place!

Always pass this place but never went in, until some friends wanted to go.. Didn't try the sushi but the ramen was decent- got miso base with tonkatsu and thought broth was decently tasty, not too salty, egg was adequately uncooked, etc. Each bowl was about $10-$11. Would go again if I were craving the ramen!

This place is ridiculously awesome. My wife and I were just driving by and decided to try somewhere new. The service was great, but the food was even better. I would say it's the best ramen/noodle place I have ever experienced (and my wife and I get ramen each week!). I got, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND, the spicy pork belly with kimchi on volcano base. I was blown away. My wife loved the spicy yellowtail handroll. And it is so affordable! If you love ramen, sushi or delicious food, please treat yourself to this place!

I went there couple times and I agreed with the previous comments that the waitress had attitude. This place is not very organized; waited too long for the food.

I have been to Maki Cafe three times the past two months and I have had different experiences all three times. The first time I went I had the tonkatsu ramen with charsui and a california roll. The broth was decent and portions were generous. Sushi was not bad. The second time I went, I realize they have a lunch special during the week days where If you order certain types of ramen, you get a free appetizer included. This was written on a sign towards the front of the door so it is easily missed. I clearly missed out the first time I went to Maki Cafe as no one will inform you of the specials. The third time I went to Maki Cafe.. one of the waitress was clearly new and had a difficult time. First, we asked for the lunch special and the waitress informed us there was no special. We walked her to the sign that clearly has "lunch special" written on it, and her response was "oh". Second, when she was trying to take our order, it was almost like she wasn't listening - our orders went into her ear and out the other. She kept repeating our orders incorrectly, and once she went into the kitchen, she came back back at least 5 times to asked us what we ordered. It was ridiciulous. Third, one person in our group ordered the tonkatsu ramen with charsui. When he received his dish, there was no charsui/meat. If the waitress paid attention to the order or to the dish when it came out, wouldn't it have been an obvious catch if the ramen had meat missing? It just was ridiculous to me. When we told the waitress the ramen was missing the pork, she responded "huh, its right here" - pointing to the chicken teriyaki. This waitress obviously needed more training. And to top off the service.. we left the restaurant after our meal. However, we realized a second after that we left something in the restaurant so all of us came back. Right we came in, the same waitress greeted us and asked us "how many people". This was too much.. how did she not notice we were the same people who just finished our meals at the restaurant? I also had ramen with the Volcanic Base. It was really flavorful and I highly recomment. It kind of reminded me of Shin Ramen

Got miso ramen today, soup is okay, but feel so disappointed with ramen noodles, over cooked. Eel sauce is very good, but salmon is not her fresh.

I had no idea there were so many ramen places in Rockville. Up until a few weeks ago, I thought Temari was the only one. I love ramen. I had my first non-instant ramen three years ago, and since then I've been to a good amount of ramen places both in and outside the DMV area. I've never had a bad bowl of ramen, but there have definitely been some stand out experiences. Unfortunately, Maki wasn't one of them. But that doesn't mean the food was bad. I actually really enjoyed my bowl of spicy ramen. The broth was nice and the yellow noodles had great texture. But, there just wasn't anything special that made me leave already looking forward to my next visit. Was it good ramen? Yes. Was it worth the price? Absolutely (it's actually pretty cheap for ramen). Is this the best place for ramen in MoCo? Probably not. But overall, it's good food for a good price, so that's A-OK to me!

Was planning on having the Pho next door, but boyfriend wanted to try ramen/udon. Tried the calamari and takoyaki. I personally didn't like them. Can't say much about the calamari, just that it's fried like Chinese carry out onion rings with a spring roll spicy sauce. Takoyaki was the size of fish balls(pretty small) and the sauce(takoyaki sauce and mayo) was barely there. The bonito flakes was also very stale tasting. Miso soup for me was good cause it wasn't too salty. Chicken udon with Shoyru(sp?) base was alright, but the egg was cooked very nicely. Grilled eel bento was very small. I thought it was just the size portion of the restaurant, but the waitress said that the chef is cooking up another piece of the eel because I got a smaller size than regular. We finished our food and nothing was mentioned about the additional piece, which I didn't care too much cause I was full(just why even mention it and just forget it...) =(. Shumai was pretty much the microwavable ones you can buy in the frozen section of Asian grocery stores. Didn't order any desserts or sushi rolls. I guess I will stick to the Pho next time. Sorry.

Usually on point with food and service but tonight we ordered a miso ramen and katsudon. Ramen was good but the katsu looked microwave level. The boy had brain damage for sure because our waters took 20 minutes and then he forgot our iced green tea order and gave us chicken cutlet instead. That plus he was messing up all the tables around us. Wont be visiting here anytime soon until they train their staff better.

Had the Japanese ball thingy I forgot what's it called for the first time and it was pretty good. I also had the bulgogi steak miso ramen and the ramen was ok, wasn't that great. Also ordered the spicy pork belly bun and that was also ok.

My girlfriend and I came through here after a post-work ramen craving. We walked in and were greeted by server "K" (Sorry, I forgot the full name!!") who sat us out of the sun and got our drinks going. It's K's first week, and she's on a roll. One item was out (Tonkatsu bites), but our Spicy Pork Belly buns and Yakitori were fresh, perfectly cooked, and well seasoned. Being our first time there, K suggested that many of her customers have tried and liked the Volcano broth with their ramen, so I gave it a shot. The ramen is delicious. I'm a ramen guy (to put into context-- my favorite is Sakuramen in Adams Morgan), so I generally try it wherever I go. The portion size is a little smaller than what I'm accustomed to, but the flavor is entirely worth it. The Volcano is not extremely spicy-- I'd give it a 6/7 on the spice level-- but it is very flavorful. Would definitely recommend this broth if you're into flavorful heat, not just pain :) Though I didn't try, the menu has a lengthy Sake and Soju section. The atmosphere is artful and cozy, albeit a little hot in there. A little AC would go a long way! Parking is ample, and the staff (especially K!) are really helpful. Bottom line: We don't have a lot of options for ramen outside of DC. Maki has taken my #2 spot for ramen (Sakuramen is still #1!!!), but easily the best in Montgomery County. Try it out!

After hearing so many bad things I decided to just try the place since my coworker insisted their ramen was better than temari. To bring it to a bad start, all the appetizers came after the entree so that kinda sucked. Moving along, I'll just rate everything I ordered: Volcano Ramen w/ cha siu, pork belly, and bamboo shoots: 2.5/5. Average at best. The bamboo shoots and pork belly came on the side of the ramen and the only thing in my bowl were noodles, half an egg, and 3 pieces of cha siu. The noodles were swollen from absorbing too much of the soup and the soup was pretty non-existent. I was eating flavorless noodles while trying my best to fish for drops of soup to pair. Grilled Pork Belly + Cha Siu: 3/5 It tasted yummy but 1/5 of the pieces were burned to a crisp... Spicy Pork Buns: 2/5 I guess they were technically not spicy since our order got messed up. It was pretty lacking in meat and flavor. My girlfriend added some of her spicy pork belly to the buns and it made it so much better. Agedashi Tofu: 4/5 This was pretty good. I really enjoyed it. It was different than temari and didn't have as much of a complicated flavor, but it was nicely fried. All-in-all, I don't think I can come back knowing I would have much rather gone to Temari.

I ordered the kakuni tonkotsu ramen, my all-time favorite food. Coming from the US ramen mecca of San Francisco, I have experienced many bowls of tonkotsu ramen before. These ramen noodles were as good as any, soft and chewy with good flavor. The kakuni was braised well and fell apart rather easily. The only thing holding Maki back from a fifth star was their broth. While tasty, it was distance away from the best I've had.

The Curry tofu Katzu set is so so amazing. It comes with salad (2 flavorful dressing options) and a miso soup (I get the vegetarian shio broth instead because the miso has fish broth that I avoid). It is a good amount of food! The service is excellent and the staff is very knowledgable and accommodating about ingredients.

I have to start out by saying that this was my third time eating ramen, so I am no expert. That being said, I loved it. I got there around 7pm, and it wasn't empty by any means. There was only one girl who was serving though. They might want to hire more staff even if it's not a big place. I suspect it'll get busier as more people realize there's another ramen place in Rockville. I went with the express purpose of getting ramen, because I had inquired prior and they said their miso sapporo style ramen base and veggie ramen base were pork free. Which is a big deal to someone like me who can't eat pork (and I'm sure to vegetarians too) It's hard to find ramen bases that are pork free. I got the fatty beef and enoki mushrooms as the entree, and picked the miso sapporo style ramen base. It comes with daikon, naruto slices, corn, half an egg, nori strips and scallion. I also got an order of takoyaki. Overall? I was satisfied. The broth was salty, but not overly so. The noodles were chewy which I loved. The portion was big enough. The takoyaki was something new for me. It had an interesting texture, but I can't complain. Though I just might stick to different apps next time. The bill came to about $14.82 I'd recommend checking it out if you don't fancy a trek down into DC. Next time I'll try the sushi here.

1st time I went here - food & service were fine (not the best, but fine...). 2nd time I went: It took the server more than half an hour to even realize that he seated us and needed to take our order. He takes our order...1 hour later, we ask why our food hasn't come out yet, and he basically says oh shoot... what did you guys order again? He took our order for the 2nd time (as he realized he never put in the order the 1st time around), and then 15-20 minutes later, he brings out the wrong order. We decide it wasn't worth making a fuss about it and sending it back to the kitchen again so we just ate it. We complained to the server; he blamed the kitchen staff. We took it to the manager; he blamed our server. No one could tell me why the restaurant was run so poorly. Not to mention they changed the menu and the food was not good anyway. WAY TOO SALTY. Will not be going back here.

I had volcano base with chicken katsu added edo curry age tofu and crunchy spicy tuna. The volcano base was good not as spicy as I thought it should be. Chicken katsu was also good. Age tofu was okay not as good as other places. Crunchy spicy tuna was the worst dish among them. The roll was very small tuna was not spicy at all I was disappointed with this one. Customer service was good and they all can speak English for non Chinese customers like me.

Ramen was great (we tried tonkatsu, volcano, etc.). Had it with the stewed pork belly, also good. Others had grilled pork belly which smelled great. Some had bento. Everyone was happy with their food. Service was also good and friendly. They went the extra mile for own of our party whose had stepped out a while and whose food had gotten cold, since they didn't want him eating cold ramen. Warabi ice cream looked good. Had tempura ice cream but the warabi had more ice cream and a chocolate drizzle.

Had the Mexico and Sakura rolls and both were fantastic. The girlfriend loves broths and got the spicy miso udon and loved it as well. Staff and service was exceptional. We were unfamiliar with the different types of broth and our waitress was very friendly and patient with us while explaining.

Fantastic sushi. Came here Christmas day and really enjoyed it. The pork belly bun wasn't rendered out completely, so it was too chewy, but the great sushi saved the experience. Nice people working here and pleasant service. Will be back again.

As soon as I tasted the chashu pork buns I knew something was wrong. My coworker and I both had the buns, takoyaki, and tonkatsu ramen. We both had gastrointestinal distress because of the lunch. Nice workers but obviously not following proper food safety.

So on my bro's quest to eat the last ramen place he hadn't tried yet in the Rockville area, we ended up here for lunch. Fatty beef with enoki mushroom ramen - Broth was good, noodles ok. I didn't taste alot of the enoki mushroom, the beef was kind of stringy, and the egg just tasted like a hard-boiled egg. Vegetarian Ramen - This was my brothers dish and I'll have to say the broth was like a tomato's Campbell's soup-Chef Boyardee combo (I love both, but not in Ramen). I couldn't stomach tasting anything else in the dish (sorry) because the flaky seafood stuff they threw over the fried tofu (to make it an Aged Tofu) made me vomit in my mouth a little. Prices are a bit higher in comparison to what you get at other similar establishments. You could add corn, meat, etc. as "extras," whereas we have been to other places (very Very close by that its already included). I'm going to say the service was Great...and the reason I say that for a place like this is because the waiter heard me say how warm it was and turned on the A/C (thank you because most Asian establishments tend to let me freeze or overheat to death in an effort to save pennies- no stereotyping here...it's the truth!). They also saw that we barely touched our ramen's (mostly because we were so full from binging at another restaurant just 20 min earlier) and asked if they could bring something else and even offered at the end of our meal to pack something else different to-go for us. I don't think I've Ever been offered that in an Asian establishment, EVER! So kudos to them for wanting to really make their customers happy. I think I'll come back here and try other stuff next time.

I came here with a couple friends during our lunch hour and was not impressed. I haven't heard good things about this place but thought I'd give it a chance. I had the kalbi donburi which is basically kalbi and a fried egg on top of rice. The order came with miso soup. It wasn't bad but it's nothing I'd be dying to have again. The service was quite slow here. Yeah, it's lunch time and it gets busy but I couldn't understand why people who came in and ordered after us got their orders first. I think they need to work on making things more efficient or hire more staff.

I found this place when I went for pho at pho nomno, during the time when it first opened and they barely had any customers. Tried their volcano ramen, instant hit, recommended friends to try it out, their baby octopus appetizer was very interesting and yummy. Later went back couple more times since they had living social deals. A good spot for ramen cravings in rockville. Not very traditional ramen, but still good.

Four stars based on price. I like the fact that you can order various proteins and broths. I like that there's a variety of prices. I like ramen but I don't like paying 13-15$ for a bowl. I heard of this place and saw a groupon so I thought why not. We ordered takoyaki and our two ramen a for ~22$. My bf thought the ramen bowl needed more broth and noodles. He said it seemed liked a kids bowl. I thought the bowl could have been a little bigger.. The spoon was awkwardly big IMO. I do think they could have given us more broth but I thought the amount of noodles was okkk. I got three slices of char Sui in my soup whereas my bf got what looked like a boiled then slightly grilled chicken breast sitting in a watered down teriyaki sauce. The chicken was okay.. They cooked (boiled) it well.. But it's just not visually appealing to eat white white boiled looking chicken. The spicy broth had good flavor but wasn't spicy. The tonkatsu broth was okay too. The takoyaki was.. Not so good. I've only had it one other time in Dtss so I only have that place to compare it to. For the food it was prob 2.5 stars and the price made it 3 stars for me. The atmosphere is so weird though.... It lacks any character and feels cold. There are five huge TVs- four for their menu and one that was playing football. There were four two tops in the middle and maybe six four tops along the walls. I felt sort of awk eating there. I could hear everyone's conversation and made awk eye contact with ppl :/. I'm not a ramen aficionado.. I don't know how others would feel but it was okk for me. ** Oh! Noodles were yummy! They were super chewy- the chewiest I've ever had- and I really enjoyed that!

Good is all I can say. I've had some mean ramen in my life time. But this one was just average. Love the decor and place settings. Though the soup spoon was very awkward, overall good food. Ordered the ramen with soft shell crab while my friend order the BBQ pork ramen and an order of shrimp tempura. Great food presentation. Service was good but then again it was just us another person in the establishment. Only set back was that things were overpriced. Even with the "grand opening special" not very "special" if you ask me. If I could I would give them a 3.5 just because of the pricing set it back from a 4.

For sushi only: Its pretty decent. Thought it was going to be just sub par when I saw the living social deal but was surprised. Pretty inexpensive and relatively decent service. Its a chill atmosphere even for a strip mall area on Rockville Pike. I'd recommend going back for their daily specials you happen to be in the area and wanted some lunch.

Excellent, fresh, expertly crafted sushi. Best in the local area. Ramen noodles and soups are also excellent. Service is a bit slow as they seem to only have one waiter working, but are friendly. Overall though, the food is very very good.

Quality Ramen in Rockville, MD? Say whattt? Let's break it down. Appetizer: Takoyaki Rating: **** Diced Octopus in a ball shaped form made out of wheat flour was quite tasty. The sauce was good, however, the bonito flakes needed more flavor. I would order this again. Sushi Roll: Black Dragon Roll Rating: *** Eel and avocado on top of a california roll . It's alright, nothing too special. Entree: Ramen Noodles w/ Grilled Pork Belly in a Tonkatsu Broth. Rating: **** I am a fan. The broth was thick and tasty, the grilled pork belly had a marinade to them, which enhanced the flavor profile of this dish, and the ramen noodle texture tasted fresh. It was appreciated that the grilled pork belly was served on the side without being asked, so that it did not deter the flavor profile of the meat. The additional ingredients within the dish was a turnip slice, corn, pickled ginger, and julienne'd seaweed. The egg was properly soft-boiled, however, it was not your traditional marinated egg. (More on this later). All of this was served in a wide bowl with a unique spoon, giving it a unique feel. Overall, this dish was a success and I would get it again. Service Rating: N/A It would be improper for me to provide a rating on the service when my friend and I were the only table there at the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon around 4. Therefore I will skip this category. Management Rating: **** Since we were one of the few in the restaurant, the manager came out to speak with us. He gave us a breakdown of ingredients he used, his philosophy, and accepted suggestions on the menu. He was friendly and explained some of the processes it took to make the broth, the food, and why some things are made the way it was. For example, the soft-boiled egg was not marinated because he felt it provided a fresher tasting product to the dish. It made sense if you understood how the marinated eggs are made in the first place (process usually takes a couple days). By explaining this, it provided me a respect as to why the chef puts out the product that he does. Additionally, I explained to him my satiable desire for braised fatty pork belly (bun or accompaniment), alongside some shishito peppers. It sparked an interest in him and I thought it would be great if he brought a little bit of NYC to the DMV. Hopefully he implements it, but with or without it, the ramen he puts out is on point. Ambience Rating: ** The restaurant took over a pizza location. Therefore, one can not fault the layout of this restaurant. It's a small restaurant, comparable to a typical pho restaurant or Ren's Ramen size. The double doors shouldn't be there, but the addition of the TV helps with the wait for food. All in all, I prefer this ramen restaurant over Ren's Ramen, Tanpopo, Toki Underground, and Satsuma in the DMV area at this point in time. If you lasted through this lengthy review, what are you waiting for? Go try for yourself! Thanks for reading! :D

The Food here is delicious. I always come back for more and more ramen. The donkatastu soup base is excellent flavoring, best soup base I've ever had. So good I keep bringing my friends here, probably 8 already lol. They have definitely steeped up their game regarding their ramen. Before, the pork was only two slice with not much ingredients. Now, it's three slices of pork with corn and other ingredients. The pork slices are extremely tender and flavorful. Melts in your mouth. I always come here starving and leaving happy. The owner is always extremely courteous giving us complimentary dishes or sides to try. I think the only down side to this was when it gets extremely busy, the servers gets frazzled. We were seated and ready to order but three tables that came in after us were able to order first, and one already got their food before we ordered... lol. normally this would upset me but I have a good impression of this place already.

Just tried Maki for the first time. The ramen with pork belly was delicious. The powdered/whisked Japanese style green tea was a nice compliment. Service was a little awkward, but not in a way that bugged me in any way. There is a tackiness in the ambiance could be improved. Two TV's and techno music were a little much. But the food was solid! I will be back.

went here recently and was quite thrilled to find a new Japanese restaurant started out with my favorite, Takoyaki to start with, very excellent my entree was the Chicken Katsu Curry, excellent flavor, hit the spot it's on the other side of the Pike from Temari, and not nearly as packed, perhaps cause it's still new, they have a wider menu and more space to work with, hope they do well

This is a nice addition to the few Rockville ramen options available. I had the pork bone broth ramen. It came with shitake mushroom, seaweed, corn, soft-boiled egg and a couple of pieces of char siu. Sometimes ramen tends to taste too salty to me, but the broth here was just right! The egg was perfectly done too. Noodles could have been more chewy, but passable. I don't think the prices were high (for ramen) to begin with ($9.99 for the char siu ramen), and they currently have a $2 off ramen grand opening special to sweeten the deal. Will check out again next time I'm in the area and ramen mood strikes.

Was planning on pho on a cold day and decided to try next door at Maki Cafe. I am not regretting my decision at all....in fact its a nice change of pace. First thing you should know is parking is a disaster in this small strip mall. I never mark down because of parking....I review the food service and quality not the parking lot! Started with shumai and they were excellent however if you want it steamed you need to ask otherwise they come fried. The sauce on the side was very average which means a little too sweet. The heat on it was good. We ordered volcano broth ramen with shrimp tempura and the grilled eel ramen in traditional broth.... The tempura batter was a bit too heavy and a little greasy. The volcano broth was flavorful and hot. It was a little too smokey for my taste but personal taste aside it was good The sea eel was good but not great. It could have been hotter. What was nice is it wasn't overly sweet. The traditional broth was excellent. The noodle itself was fresh and not overly cooked. The service was fast friendly and attentive. Definitely worth a trip back when you consider the quality and the price!

They should have told me it was a Ramen place. Got a bento box, shrimp tempura (which was shrimp and veggie tempura) for 7.95, with okay california roll ( I prefer the shredded with mayo fat pieces, a nice little salad, and rice which was overkill after the four pieces of california roll. My gal got four pieces of salmon roll and four pieces of eel, 8 pieces for 6.95? Not a good value for me. This is a place that should be "order at the counter" instead I pay a tip for food that was just okay, nothing to come back for. Okay, will try the ramen next time, but to go. Will give another try on the ramen but when competing against long time spots on the pike, you had better be a lot better at a better value than what I saw at Maki Cafe. Try China Taste/Tokyo Express for a true effin value.

I just got back to my office from eating at Maki Cafe. I come here a couple times a month for the ramen. The spicy miso broth is my favorite but the other broths are good as well. I like Maki Cafe's ramen much better than some of the other options in the area, such as Temari Cafe. I also suggest trying the spicy kalbi. It is delicious.

Food just simply wasn't that good. Ramen was salty. Soft shell crab didn't come out by the time I had finished the noodles (it was supposed to be part of the ramen). Only good thing was their service. They gave us free mochi ice cream.

This place knows it's ramen! Service is almost great, but you can't argue with the broth! We tried the rolls as well and were not disappointed. The place is run by Japanese guys. The atmosphere is young, with good music and non pretentious prices. We will def come back :) Its def NYC worthy ramen :)

I seem to recall reading reviews several months ago that related Maki's ramen to glorified versions of the $1 packages of noodles with the aluminum flavor pouch, and thus I avoided venturing into this restaurant. My wife, who is a vegetarian, finally agreed to go out for ramen with me and we decided to go to Ki No Spoon. It turns out that they did not have any vegetarian options there, so we hopped across the street to Maki, which we were happy to learn that they do support the vegetarians as well as us meat lovers. Wow was I pleasantly surprised to find out that those reviews were SO wrong. I had the Volcano Ramen with spicy grilled pork belly and kimchi. What an amazing combination! The broth was hearty and very nicely spiced. The pork belly was grilled perfectly, but some of the pieces were a little too thick, and thus a bit extra chewy. The kimchi was great. My wife had the vegetarian ramen, which seemed almost to be a tomato soup base. I thought it had a nice flavor, the vegetables were perfectly seasoned and had great texture to them. The weird thing included in her dish was pickles, but they really seemed to work with the dish. Both of the broths had great consistency, a far cry from the flavored salt water baths that the cheap imitation packets that became the introduction to ramen noodles for so many of us. They really had great body and a wonderful flavor profile. The noodles (they had two options, yellow or white, both wheat noodles, the difference is the yellow noodles were made with egg yolks) had a good chew, not too soft, not too "toothy". We also got an order of steamed buns - one with sticky rice, and one with bulgogi steak. My wife enjoyed the sticky rice bun, my socks were knocked off with the bulgogi bun. We are big fans of East Asian cuisine and were so happy to find another restaurant in Rockville that we can add to our rotation. They also offer sushi, habachi fried rice, yakisoba and yaki udon dishes, so they are far from a one trick pony. My only complaint is that the service seemed to be a bit slow. When we walked in, we were the third table to be seated, and i observed two servers in the front of the house. By the time we were leaving, there were two large parties, along with four other parties of 2 or 4 (which included us), and there was only one server working the front. My dish came out a good 5 minutes before my wife's, and the steamed buns, which I believe were considered appetizers, came about 10 minutes after we both had our ramen. But all in, it was a great meal, and at only $30, it was very affordable and you definitely leave nice and full.

Absolutely love this place! Their sushi is phenomenal and is decently priced. They are very quick to take your order and the food comes out fast as well. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for quality and variety in sushi.

The soup is really good. But the noodle is little bit hard and its more like hongkong style Ramen. Their sushi is pretty good. Especially the sushi chef is really friendly

First off, please don't let your opinion about this restaurant be based off of one person's bad review. Please go there for yourself to try it out. I was really close not giving this place a chance, after reading one negative review, but my fiancé and I didn't want to believe it until we actually tasted it ourselves. So we knew there was a grand opening and wanted to try the new ramen place, he normally isn't a fan of ramen, but this place really changed his mind. This is actually one of the best ramen place, comparable to old Kimora, across the street, well on days that they don't run out. My fiancé had the Tonkatsu ramen and I had the miso ramen. We got the salmon and steak teriyaki entrees and also the soft shell crab, which was all a bit smaller in portion, but thats ok because of all the ramen and great tasting broth and toppings. I would have enjoyed the ramen noodle by itself even if it didn't come with and entree. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the tuna in our sashimis didn't taste as fresh as the salmon and white tuna, and they ran out of yellowtail, which is fine, we were getting full anyways. The fish cake with the pink swirl was mushy, but wasn't overbearing, maybe not enough toppings either but the half egg was good, just doesn't really beat rens ramen egg. The staff was nice and spoke with us, they were Cantonese but the restaurant is owned by Japanese. Overall the restaurant was clean and we love those big soup spoons! Will come back just for the ramen ;) maybe not for sushi. So as u can see we've tried several ramen places, I felt I gave a fair review. this place has potential, just give them a few more weeks to get the hang of things. Yes, the lady taking our order did need more practice.

Rockville, MD. Another great meal. Had their lunch special on Wednesday - shrimp tempura ramen. Chose the yum yum broth for the ramen noodle soup. Delicious. The tempura had 2 decent size shrimps and a slice of eggplant. Very friendly sèrvice.

I usually don't leave a review unless the restaurant is particularly good, or if it is particularly bad. Everything in between is subjective so I try not to ruin it for those of you who rely on yelpers because I would rather you experience the in-betweens yourself and decide according to your own experiences. Anyhow, I went to Maki Cafe for dinner and ordered Bulgogi Rice Bowl, which comes with miso soup. The soup came out approximately 8 minutes later and was almost room temperature. So I had a spoonful of it before giving up. Food came out shortly thereafter. The beef was BLAND. Bulgogi my ass. As it was as if they boiled the beef in a sweet sauce. What's worse is that there were parts of the rice that were UNCOOKED! This is a mortal mistake for any asian restaurant. I mean which asian restaurant f***s up the rice? And service is less than stellar, but for an asian restaurant, its falls in the in-between category so I won't go into detail about it.

ok my second visit here.. would do 3.5 starts...more than AOK, but not quite a fan yet...this time during the day with 2 of my teenagers...I have been going to Ki no spoon once a week for the last 3 weeks, so thought would come here for a change...It was a Sunday afternoon 2p..no seats available...we waited about 5 minutes for the to clean off the counter top eating area...there were 2 women manning all the front..the place could have used another waiter/waitress..once seated, it was another 7-8 minutes for the waitress to take our order.my son wanted the shrimp tempura bowl and was told it would take a long time..maybe 15 -18 minutes...????so he changed it to shrimp tempura ramen...but wait..why the wait for the bowl...the rice isn't ready?? didn't quite understand...ok fine....once we ordered, the ramen quite out within 10 minutes...I had the chicken katsu ramen...pretty tasty, daughter had the chicken teriyaki ramen..thumbs down on the chicken teriyaki...tasted like they had heated the chicken in a microwave...it had an odd color, almost off white...son had the volcano base..omg...super spicy!!! each ramen gets 1/2 egg...comes out on a plate..don't know why they don't put it inside the bowl.. I think I like ki no spoon a bit more..their soup has more depth to me...ki no spoon though has so many more options...so good if there is a group, plus they have sushi..I one thing I didn't like..they need to up their cleaning..floors were filthy...I can understand it's hard to keep clean when it is busy, but it is unappetizing to see a dirty floor while eating...

I had the Volcanic Base ramen. The soup tasted like Kimchi. I liked the Char siu and the boiled egg, but the soup got boring and the taste of the noodles was distracting. It wreaked of eggs.

I was really pleasantly surprised! I read the reviews and did not have very high expectations, but I thought the food ranged from good to really good. The ramen (pork broth and bbq pork) was really tasty. I would say better than Ren's. My son loved his Bento box with fried chicken thing and curry. The fried oyster app was not bad, and the rock shrimp app was excellent. Service was a bit absent-minded, but I put it off to inexperience since the place is so new. I did find the too-loud radio and the huge TV distracted from conversation. The $10 off with the Yelp deal was awesome! We will definitely be back!
