Contrary to previous postings, we found the food here excellent and the Sunset beautiful. The staff was friendly..service timely and learned the 2 cooks were fairly new. The mussels, steamed crabs and crab cake were excellent. The tuna steak would have rated excellent but was cooked more than desired. The vegetable sides were crisp tender; the roasted potatoes nicely roasted. Both just needed more flavoring which was accomplished with some Old Bay Seasoning . Thoroughly enjoyable evening.

We stopped on here for a cocktail when we got to Oxford. The service was basically non-existent. Nice view, though.

Save your money and go to schooners. This place is terrible. For a seafood place their food sucks. Maryland has tge best seafood in the wirld but this place doesnt. It is overpriced and tge service is terrible. Ordered crabs and had to send them back. The bew owners suck. They need to do another occupation. If you want good seafood go to crab claw in st. Michaels. The food is served cokd and soggy. Theur is definately no manafement. A shame because it has a beautiful view but terrible food.

Other than the location, which is nice, I'm not sure how the rest could be any worse. Dirty, run down building, terrible food and vastly overpriced. A real disgrace!

Cannot complain about this place. We can take the boat over and dock for free, win. They have outdoor seating with a great view, win. They have $3 margaritas all summer, win. They have a great beer selection, win. They have tons of seafood, especially crab, which to a visitor is what you go there for, win. Their crab cake sandwich is a giant hunk of tasty crab, lightly broiled and plunked on a roll which you can easily get rid of to eat solo, win. They have grilled cheese for the kiddos, and kid-friendly cups and attitude, win. Their service is prompt and friendly, win. Downsides, they don't take AMEX, and the prices can be steep if you order lots of crab cake sandwiches. Oh and the fries are nothing to write home about. Been there a few times now, and it's a solid place for tasty seafood in the area if you want to be able to boat to lunch quickly.

Place was empty today. Only one other table. Understandably because the menu was supremely limited. I got blackened tuna that was more reminiscent of a molded can of Starkist, than a steak. Asked for it rare even though I assumed that's how it would come. I was mistaken. Tuna was severely overcooked. The grilled pineapple chunks were pretty good and the vegetables were adequate. The potatoes were mealy but I still finished them anyhow. Crab dip was ok, but had black beans in it. Not complaining, it was a nice touch, but I prefer not to eat my crab dip with tortilla chips. Next time the family wants to go here, I'll call out sick.

We read the Yelp reviews before coming here, but we REALLY came for the sunset that the ferry driver recommended and for the $3 margaritas. We ended up being pleasantly surprised. There was no wait and we experienced very attentive service and a gorgeous sunset over the water! Another reviewer commented on the 'soggy, tiny, shoestring fries.' Well, they must have changed their fries because my fiance declared the fries some of the best he's EVER had. He said the same thing about the plump mussels. I have a somewhat restrictive diet, and both the waitress and cook were extremely accommodating to alter one of the salads to meet my needs. Food was awesome, and we hung around for quite awhile drinking margaritas and watching the sun sink into the water. Wonderful! I'd 100% come back.

The Masthead combines cheerful staff, salty sweet ambiance, and good food into a really pleasant dining experience. Oxford's Best Burger is a staple on the menu, as well as a salad featuring some of their nifty crab cakes. Good bar drinks round out the meal.

Took the ferry from Bellevue to Oxford with our bikes. We were looking for a good place for lunch and we found it. Sat outside on the water and enjoyed the food and the view. We really liked the creamy crab soup. I liked my fish and chips and hubby enjoyed the crab balls on English muffin. The cocktail sauce was good but asked for horseradish to add to it and it was delish. $3 margarita was good too.

If you want a place to sit outside on the water and have a drink, you should absolutely come to Masthead. When it comes to atmosphere, the patio here is excellent. The food, however, is another story. Overpriced and not very good. The crab cake sandwich was decent - tasty though it had consistency issues. The french fries were some of the worst I've had in a restaurant, really souring my perception. Soggy, tiny, shoestring fries, that looked like they sat in the bottom of a bag in the back of a freezer for months, seasoned with giant pieces of salt that had kinda stuck together. Gross. The burger, termed "The best in Oxford," was supposed to come medium-rare, but was quite well-done. Going to round up to 3 stars out of generosity, because the service was quick and the patio is excellent. Like I said, sitting outside for a drink on a nice evening would be a a 5-star experience. Just...don't sit in the dingy indoors and have extremely low expectations about the food.

Great $3 margaritas, perfect location to watch the sunset. Friendly attentive service. Dog friendly outside.

If you want eat at a quiet waterside setting this is your destination... plenty of west-facing waterside tables to view the sunset. I have only tried the fish and chips made with local rockfish and always return to the same... it is tasty, reasonably-priced and reliable. (Could not say the same for the fish and chips at Schooner's.) Walk past the cavernous interior onto the porch... you will be happy you came. Three buck Margherita's all summer can be enticing. Good middle of the road place. We stopped here after taking the ferry from Bellevue. Had a beer and some shrimp mid-afternoon on a Sunday. Easy way to spend an hour taking a breather from our day trip. Can't speak to the whole menu. Standard fare of seafood and such.

Oxford is a town that is short on dining options so restaurants like Masthead don't have to try too hard. Was just ok. We had the crabs and they were small and tasteless. They could have sold a lot more, ESP beer, if the waitress had ever come by to notice our empty cups. Also, they don't take Amex - and that's a pain.

The two of us were sailing and motoring eastward on the Choptank River. We decided, rather than anchoring to eat what we had onboard, we'd patronize an Oxford eatery. Saw that The Masthead has free docking slips and is on the Tred Avon waterfront. An ideal combination. After we docked, we headed in to the air conditioned part of the restaurant. Though 'Taylor' was friendly, she only visited our table ONCE. The service was lousy. And, the 'fish and chips' were industrial-shaped deep fried frozen whiting served with out-of-the-bag fried french fries. Had to request cocktail sauce. We ate half of what was presented to us and headed back to the ship. We sailed from The Masthead nearly back to Herrington Harbour South.
