I really wanted to like it here, because so many locals talked about it being a neighborhood gem. Its not that I didnt like it, I just think their food is bland and although the options look great, some things can be worked on. Example : the ribs were soo dry, not fall off the bone good, the burgers dont have like a signature mayo sauce, the rice is like a boxed rice, the beans are out of a can. I dunno, I mean its not like I can expect that much from a homey restaurant but they can definitely better their food. I can see them on a show in which a chef came to revamp their food items. Besides that, I love that vibe they have going on, the outdoor area and all their weekly specials.

Is improved less greasy...fish and chips has less batter and oil and more fish...they have excellent oysters raw or fried here ...the fried oyster appetizer is great with a cold draught .. The ambience is also warm..cozy and lively until 9pm at least ;-) Overall food is better..seems less processed...better chef I suppose ...John the owner is a nice guy ...a friendly Irishman .. They regained my patronage...

The ambiance and service are the best part of Olney Ale House. (I'm sure it's really the beer selection, but I'm not much of a beer chick.) The happy hour .50 oysters are such a treat. They also made a slamming Mushroom Swiss Burger. My fav! I love dining outside on the covered patio with friends.

Nice beer selection. Really enjoyed the fish and chips - HUGE portions. The fries are nice and crispy too the way I like em. I tried some of the clam chowder and this was great as well - nice and thick, creamy, and lots of clams :) The fish and chips were the special of the day but our waitress didn't give us the special of the day price. This bummed out my dad but it was only a dollar and he was too nice to say anything about it. I'd recommend making sure you're charged the correct price for your items - especially during happy hour. Also, we were pretty cold even though we weren't right next to the door... the place was pretty drafty.

Tried this for the first time tonight. Burger was average, fries nice and crispy. Husband's fish and chips were not great. Fish had too much batter and were mushy. Worst part is they charged $3 for a side of rice and $3 for half an ear of corn for my toddler son. You'd think with two meals and two drinks they'd cut a deal on the kids meal...especially for half an ear of corn. Overall, average food and dingy interior. Outside patio seems to be a better spot if weather is nice.

This place is a hidden gem in the suburb that is Olney. I live in Silver Spring and it's a treat to drive to this establishment along some back country roads to get there. Their oysters are pretty delicious and if you go on the right night, 50-60 cents each. My favorite appetizers on the menu are the buffalo chicken wings (you can get 1/2 sauces) and the fried mushrooms. Entrees I recommend: chicken pot pie (delicious gravy), chili con carne, beef stew, and all of their burgers are delicious.

I've been back several times since my last review & either the food has improved or I was there on bad nights. I avoided the stew & pot roast & stuck with sandwiches. The burgers are very good and I enjoyed a chicken quesadilla and the fish and chips. Their outside patio provides a reprieve from the noise inside and specials are offered every night.

The chipotle burger was awesome and cooked to perfection, the fries were amazingly seasoned well. The price of $11.00 was a bit steep. No need to return.

Amazing pot roast! The best I've had in many years. Great wing appetizers, crispy and fresh. Excellent service and atmosphere.

Always enjoyed stopping in the ale house for a bite to eat. Yes a typical older neighborhood pub. But thats what makes it special. Yes, I will go back.

My visit was definitely not what I had expected. My fiancé spoke highly of this restaurant and so we finally decided to check it out. It s a local pub/bar with a outdoor seating area. When we arrived it took a couple minutes for us to get seated. Our waiter was the bartender so we was going back and forth and was rarely seen. I ordered the fish and chips. I regretted the decision the moment the food came out. The fish was soggy and the breaking fell off the fish. It was unappealing to the eye and unappetizing. We basically ate the fries and left the fish. We tried to bring the poor quality of the food to the attention of our waiter but he basically walked away as we were speaking to him. Safe to say we will never be back due to the poor service and mediocre/subpar food.

While visiting my family in DC area, my brother and his wife raved about this place. Specifically, the 60 cent oysters and the pot roast. So when we visited the fire dinner recently, I was curious to try these. So we started our meal off with a few dozen oysters. They were served shucked on a bed of ice, were incredibly fresh and delicious, served with a fine cocktail sauce. A pint of locally brewed ale was the perfect compliment. Next came the pot roast dinner..a huge portion with mashed potatoes, touted with a rich, dark gravy, and a side of fresh green beans. One taste of the pot roast and I was hooked! It was one of the most tender, rich, delicious meat dishes I'd ever eaten! The gravy was a perfect enhancement to both the meat and the fluffy, prefect mashed potatoes! I ate very slowly, savoring every mouthful. The attentive, friendly service enhanced the whole experience.

60c oysters, how I wish I could love you. But these rocks are somehow tasteless, blah. But the beer on draft makes up for it all. So does the menu - yum. Burgers - delicious. Fish and chips - yum.

I finally came back to this spot one night on my way home. A Guinness was calling and they do them right here. A Shamrock is included for free but no pot of gold. A hunger ensued so I opted for the New England clam chowder bowl & their fish and chips. Both were fine but remember this is a low key pub where locals gather...not a world class restaurant. TV's are on for your sports fix and the servers here are from other spots on this earth. Our server was from London and she was very friendly. Come have a pint here and relax.

Food was so-so. Temperature was Luke warm when brought to the table. Given the time it took, I imagine it had been sitting for a while. Appetizer was not brought out. After the meal we sat for a long time waiting for the waiter to notice we were done. He walked by several times - and always seemed to just ignore our looks. Don't know that I will rush back here anytime soon.

This is our home away from home; so new chef please. ... Learn to cook those hamburgers as requested. Don't burn the shrimp or over salt shrimp on the ginger shrimp salad. Guys-who is looking after the cutlery. Dirty knives on two separate occasions. Service is great though-and we always love coming to our neighborhood pub. However, please don't embarrass Olney. You have good food, good service and a place we have loved for decades. Don't drop the ball now.

Olney Ale House is a really classic American style place with that sort of atmosphere. The food is really classic American food without much revision. I got the steak and fries and it wasn't that good. The steak was a bit tough and not very flavorful. Everything is also kinda pricy for what you get. If you are looking for the new contemporary style of American food that has a French twist, this is not the place for you. However, if you are coming for traditional (and bland) American food then this could be decent for you... The waitress was super kind though and provided really nice wait service.

Used to hang here in the 80's when it was GREAT. The stew and bread was outstanding and no complaints on other dishes either. Once the long-time owners sold the place, it has declined as per other commenters. Keep hoping it will get better and can't understand why, in an area like this, no one has been able to get this place back to serving simple, good quality food! I guess they do a good business because of the huge selection of beer, and it still has an ambiance to it that other pubs in the area don't have. Sheeple still go instead of boycotting the place! Last time I was there, the window sills and curtains were dirty. So sad.

Great place. We found the Ale House when we first moved to the area and got a bit lost in Olney. The food is pretty good and the specials are nice. They have a great covered porch with ceiling fans to help you stay cool. The inside has a nice rustic ambiance of an ale house. My only complaint is that the service is a little slow. Almost every visit, we to have to wave down waiters to place orders, get refills on drinks, or updated on the status of our food. All in all- I recommend this place and keep returning.

Some staff here can be a bit strange but the food is excellent and reliable pub food. Had a delicious take out dinner the other night: shrimp bisque, caesar salad, fish and chips, burger (it wasn't all for me). Everything was great. For dine in the restaurant can feel a little dirty and a little cramped. It's been there forever. I remember going as a treat as a little girl before an evening at the Olney Theater. Their bread used to be great and free. Now they charge for it and I don't think it's as good as it used to be. At one point this place went through a vegetarian phase, but like many of us, gave it up and went back to being carnivorous. Parking lot is always crowded. Outdoor bar is nice but I believe it's a smoker's haven. Closed Monday's. Half price burgers (dine in) on Tuesday, if you buy a beverage.

I have always driven by and never stopped by and I finally got to go because I was invited to eat here. First of all they didn't even open the back and let us(a party of 8) sit inside, instead we had to sit on a wood picnic bench outside with 3 older adults.. One thing I was completely shocked about and have never ever heard of is that written at the bottom of I think the first page of the menu it says "$2.50 EXTRA CHARGE FOR SHARING PLATES" I mean are you serious ?! we can't share food without being charged? The only reason I gave 2 stars is because some of the food we had was good, all was alright except my food. I ordered the bbq pulled pork sandwich.. not too sure why a $13 dollar sandwich has potato chips instead of french fries.... but anyways the sandwich came out and the pulled pork had NO bbq sauce on it... and it was also overcooked and tasted completely awful. What really confused me is how do you forget the MAIN INGREDIENT of the sandwhich?!.... So I gave it back and the waitress ended up returning it telling me to eat the chips.. not sure why she didn't just get that food to the kitchen... but not only that she also was very slow on getting is refills for drinks and would dissapear and it wasn't even that busy.. then she got a 15% percent to and had the nerve to make a snotty face as if she was upset it was too little.. yeah the food wasn't your fault but you would dissapear and not come out for a while.. I've been a waitress before I know how often you're supposed to be checking on your tables . at least we gave 15% which was more than generous for the service.

Used to be a quaint pub to enjoy during the evening. I moved away 15 years back and was in the area so a lunch break there seemed like a good idea. Eleven dollars for an overcooked burger, indifferent and sluggish service, no stews for a wintery day (save for $14 chili!), and the charged for food not ordered all adds up to fond memories of what once was and is a distant memory. My advice...wave as you drive by. There are plenty of other places where you can do much better!

I've been here twice and gotten the reuben sandwich. It was only OK each time. This is an average american fare restaurant.

What the heck happened? I use to live in the Gaithersburg area, and once in awhile I would stop by here for dinner after events at Olney Theatre Center. The Ale house was perfectly fine, I could have a simple beer and enjoy myself with the food at least, well, not being amazing, was at least passable. Having now read some of the previous reviews on here, my experience is really no surprise, if what I've read here talks about ownership turning over and changing things for what appears to be the worse. Prices here I noticed have really gone up. There are about 12 taps for beer, and there is a long beer list for bottles, perhaps about 50, but nothing crazily obscure or mind blowing. You will find Heavy Seas and Flying Dog and the usual bar beers (ie. Guinness, Bud etc..) but this is not a place for beer connoisseurs or geeks to seek out. There is nothing here you can't get elsewhere. I even noticed the bottle list was a laminated menu, which tells me this never changes much. I asked for a bottle of Dead Guy Rogue and they didn't even have it. Ordered bread which is a nice warm loaf and fine. Another person asked for a cup of chowder. 86d. A simple broccoli soup instead, which never came. Instead our mains came out and I went for ribs and they were literally blackened. I am talking powdered burnt, since they threw the sauce on and stuck it in the heat and forgot about it. It was still edible, and at least to some degree chewy, but I mean this never should have left the kitchen, with half of the tops just charred and ripped and tossed off. Seriously... I've had better ribs at Famous Daves or Red Hot And Blue and that REALLY SAYS something... when you can't even do it that well. Since I was with relatives, I decided to pick my battles and not raise a fuss, cause I didn't feel like it was going to make a difference since I rarely find myself out this way anymore, and didn't want to make a scene. Instead my relative decided to make a fuss about it, and got the ribs at least comped after the congenial server said she would talk with the manager. The bill at least didn't contain the soup, and so that was the end of it. Expensive and lousy food that gets nothing more exciting than burgers and sandwiches it appears. The impression I got here is that this place has a problem in the kitchen, and is doing things on the cheap, so I am not going to be back anytime soon.

LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! I moved to Olney from Bethesda last year. I've been a loyal customer of Olney Ale House ever since, dining there over a dozen times. The staff is so friendly, accommodating, efficient, and positive. Large selection of beer, wine, and even hot chocolate with whipped cream and shirley temples for the kids. The oysters are 60 cents apiece and delicious. The beef stew, burgers (Tuesdays 1/2 price w/ purchase of a soda/alcoholic beverage), homemade soup and salad dressings, ribs, and prime rib sandwiches are great! When I tried the Bread Pudding dessert, it was huge and scrumptious. Being that my family has owned a restaurant for over 53 years, I grew up working in the restaurant business. The Ale House is my style- cozy, delicious, and consistently a great place to eat and have a great time!

Three visits overall. Ambiance: Trading post/farm house style pub with dark wood and high shelves of hundreds of beer bottles. Can feel a little low-end when you see a fly buzzing around or are seated at a slightly sticky table, but given this is essentially a saloon, it adds to the charm rather than detracts. Service: Good enough that it didn't detract from the experience, but not good enough that it substantially added to it. Beer Selection: Around 25-30 taps that included most major styles of beer, mostly represented by well-known examples of the style. Plenty of local DC brews. Substantial and well-curated bottle list, but nothing you couldn't find at a local store. Overall, an excellent selection for whatever mood you're in, but you'll not find any rarities here. Food: It's the kind of food that TGIFridays or Ruby Tuesday would produce if they were small, mom and pop style places. in short, good pub fare. Start with a loaf of the fresh-baked molasses oat bread. Potato skins consist of 2.5 whole baked potatoes cut in half and loaded with about a pound of toppings. The nacho plate could feed a family of six. The fries must be cooked in duck fat or peanut oil--they are really remarkable. I had one of the top 5 burgers I've ever had. The peanut butter pie is not to be missed, and the key lime is the most perfectly, insanely tart I've ever had. It's not michelin-quality hoity-toity fare, and it's not supposed to be. What it is, is incredibly excellent pub fare. Value: Four beers, a loaf of bread, two appetizers, burger plate, two desserts, all for under a hundred bucks. In the DMV, that's a STEAL. Overall: This place is a local treasure. Unless you're going to someplace in DC, you'll not find a better beer list/food combo anywhere close. Also, their Guinness pours are absolutely PERFECT, which is unfortunately all too rare.

After living in Olney for many years i decided to give this place a try. I ordered oysters, burger and fries with a house salad on the side. The waiter was friendly but service was extremely SLOW. The salad and oysters was an appetizer, however, it came out with the entree which took 45 minutes. Food was pretty good except the oysters were cold like they were sitting in the back for a while ready to come out. The waiter took a while to come back except when it was time to pick up the tip. This place would be a last minute choice, not in a rush to return.

Don't come here looking for anything fancy but if you want a decent beer and standard pub food, it won't disappoint. Over the many years that a restaurant has occupied this building, the current incarnation is perhaps a little more comfortable than in the past. Although many more eating places have arrived as Olney has grown, it's still a favorite. On nights when there's a play on at the nearby theater, it's well to arrive early since the wait staff isn't large.

Usually pretty good but today there is a new 'hostess' who is more concerned with looking bored and disaffected than with taking care of customers.

(08/30/2013) Happened to be in the area and the only thing I remember about Olney is the Olney Ale House (after having driven by but never stopping for 12 years). Had a late lunch, place was still pretty full. We got seated next to a very rambunctious table of 8 kids; place is family-friendly, especially and surprisingly for a bar. Menu was standard bar fare, looked like some house specials. Had the New England Clam Chowder (soup of the day); it was chock full of large clam chunks, fresh celery and onion, a little potato, rather thick, somewhat mildly seasoned. The Fried Oyster appetizer was six hand-breaded in a thick cornmeal and flour based crust, way more breading than oyster (which were rather small and slightly overdone). Fish and Chips (special of the day for $11) was a steal; the 2 pollock filets were large, somewhat fishy smelling, battered and deep-fried, and laid over a smattering of battered fries (the frozen SYSCO kind). Place is quaint, looks like a renovated house with an extended covered patio for outdoor seating. Interior, while I like the original look, could use a little updating, if just for cleanliness sake (like the ground-in dining room carpet and please! some ventilation in the bathrooms). Service was friendly, but not a pro (some kid for the summer I bet) and a little absent. I wouldn't make another special trip there, but might stop in for a beer, nice draft selection, but light on the locals.

Thumbs up. The sandwiches -- we had a reuben and a turkey/swiss creation (was called "The Californian" or something or other)-- are top notch; both delicious and heaping with meats, cheese, veggies & sauces. The staff is personable & friendly. The environment - relaxed and comfortable. The decor, including the zillions of beer cans/bottles lining the walls, is old, old, old, dusty and old. The place could definitely use a modernization, but with food this good, I'll come here anyway. Prices are kinda on the high side, but again, the food won't let you down. Outdoor patio has heat lamps.

The staff totally took care of our soccer team today. The food was delicious ...oysters a steal and staff was great. The first salad on the end was excellent with the house dressing yummy. If I loved neat here...i would be a.local!!!

Great homey environment. Very comfortable country feel. Excellent friendly service. The oysters were excellent and reasonably priced. Sandwiches are fresh and delicious. It's great to get a real home cooked homemade meal nowadays where everything is cookie cutter and corporate. The Rueben is delicious.

I really wanted the oyster platter. But it must be popular - it was sold out. So I got the catfish and chips. It tasted like the river the fish used to swim in. It was so much food! I decided to just eat it and I got used to the flavor. I am taking the rest home for my dad. He'll love it! My husband got the fish and chips and said it was undercooked. I tasted it. It could have used salt and pepper. It had no flavor compared to my catfish. The fries were good! One of my children got a great cheeseburger and enjoyed the whole thing. The other child got the huge hotdog and ate most of it. They both looked great. The cole slaw was very good. I saw someone else really enjoying the fish tacos. Great beer selection. Wine selection pretty good too! We don't live in the area or we might return fairly regularly. The bathrooms need updating.

Nice atmosphere, outside seating. Ribs = Prepare to chew and you better have strong hands(I broke 2 fingers-JK). Couple behind me both returned as did I. Waitress says, these aren't baby back(thanks for clearing that up :-)), I say, yes but it's been 5 min and I'm still chewing my first bite which took me 10 min to cut and the knife just broke(didn't really say that, but wanted too!). Broiled on high? Soup= Edible. Wouldn't recommend. Had a couple bites and moved on. "Home made", looks to his left for a reaction, and asks, excuse me sir why all the empty soup cans(joke)?! Wings= Edible. Ordered Old Bay, maybe had 1 flake of Old Bay on it, no salt. But hey that didn't stop me from drowning each in blue cheese and offering them to the table. BLUE CHEESE IN THE HOUSE. Oysters=........ Salmon= Inside was raw. When returned from kitchen, served 1/4 eating piece, in pieces. Dry. Broccoli = No taste. Rice = How on earth do you mess rice up? For Christmas I am delivering a rice maker and bags of jasmine rice from the Asian Mart across the street. Freedom Fries= Not bad! Beer= Tasty! Cleanliness = Yikes Good place to drink beer, maybe I should have figured that out by the name and not be giving them a hard time. Stick to bar food and beer boys and gals...

The best burgers in town and the selection in beers goes very well with the food. The management is good but the servers are awsome. Always made me feel welcome and they make the perfect recommendation in terms of the combination of food and beer. Oh ya the oysters are also excellent with great prices..

2.5 stars I stopped in to the Olney Ale House with my boyfriend and a few other family members for a quick bite to eat while we were in the neighborhood. It sounded like a cute, classic pub and with beer-lovers in the group, I figured it was worth a shot. It was fun enough and worth a visit, but generally this is not a place I would go back to again and again. We originally decided to come here because everyone was excited to sit back with a pint and some good, hearty food, but when we got the beer menu, we were shocked to see how expensive all of the drinks were. We all did end up ordering something, but the selection of beer (and cider) on tap was limited and didn't have a lot of variety, especially considering that this is supposed to be an ale house. For a town like Olney, these prices were inappropriately high--I would have better believed them had we been in the heart of DC. The food was also decent but not amazing. My family felt that the burgers were tasty but nothing special, and people agreed that the fish and chips were pretty far below their hopes and expectations. The portions were really big, but that's the least I would expect for the prices that they were charging. On my end, they did have a few options for vegetarians, which was a plus, and the veggie wrap was pretty tasty, but as with everything it was fairly uninspired. Overall, while the place was cute and seemed to be hopping by the time we left, we left a bit disappointed. For the prices, they really should be doing a whole lot better. I am not sure that this is a place I would ever really revisit.

Went here on a double date for a quick bite to eat. The menu had tons of choices but since the Ale House is known for the burgers I decided to go for it. Two of us ordered a hamburger and the other two ordered sandwiches. I ordered the gourmet burger and it was cooked perfectly to order. It was juicy but lacked a bit of flavor. It was still tasty! The husband ordered some type of chicken sandwich. He wanted to replace the cheese with cheddar but the waitress must have missed it. -a star for the cheese. The husband didn't enjoy his sandwich as much. Our double daters, had a hamburger and the Ruben. The Ruben looked delicious and stacked with corned beef. Both said they're meals were delicious. I thought the prices were a bit high for nothing super fancy. Will visit again.

I fear the future for my old beloved restaurant. I'd say, " It used to be great, and " a long slow decline". Last time I went, June 2014, we had to send the hamburger back twice to get "well done" into the cooks vocabulary. But, that said I like the place for its old Inn ambieance. Perhaps management should take a deep breath and reconsider their hectic atmosphere, train the waitresses to pause, listen to the order, and I hate to add...slow down, this is not McDonalds...at least, not yet! One can still enjoy a good meal, and if you like a cold beer.

The Olney Alehouse used to be one of my favorite places and still is for their beef stew, wonderful molasses bread, and lemon tahini salad dressing. That said their fish and chips are some of the worst I've had anywhere. It is a special every Friday night but I couldn't believe how soggy, doughy and overcooked they are. A friend warned us away from the fish & chips but I thought she exaggerated especially since it is their Friday night special. But she was right the Fish & Chips are just terrible. Stick with the half price burgers on Tuesdays

Went there for lunch today. The place was not ready for customers at the 11:30 open hours, could not enter the men's room full trash bag blocking the door. Oyster PoBoy lots of cold stale bread, few oysters and dressing. The portabella sandwich, tasteless. 1 to 10 it would rate a 3

I was in the area with friends again, and wanted to take my wife here, as we'd been on an international kick recently, and she really wanted some down-home American comfort food. We went on a Saturday night, which was their Rib special. The atmosphere was just as before, still well kept up, and tastefully appointed. Interestingly, we were seated at the very same table I had been when eating here before, so that was amusing. I went with the full rack of ribs special, along with our dinner companions, while my wife went with the Beef Stew. The ribs came out on a monstrous plate, when they say full rack, they mean *full*, it was easily over 20 ribs, and they were thick and meaty too, not some of these thinner "short" ribs restaurants tend to pass off as ribs. These had been dry roasted, and then cooked with a sauce to finish, so they were extremely tender, but not falling apart, they held their consistency to be solidly meaty. My wife commented that the Stew was thick and hearty, just what she was looking for; it was also quite chunky, as opposed to smaller bits in a thin sauce, which was nice. The only downside she felt was that the Oatmeal-Molasses bread was a bit of a let-down, it was cool when it came out, and not as hearty as expected. Overall though we experienced efficient and quick service, and good quality food. Well worth the return trip.

Stopped here for a burger after a long, hot day on the links. We weren't looking for anythng special, and this is the place. I recall eating here many years ago with fond memories. I had the black and bleu burger, which was better than okay. My companions both enjoyed bbq burgers. Drank two pints of Guinness (I told you I was hot). Several people around us ordered the fish and chips, and I noticed there were lots of leftovers, and nobody asked for a box to take them home. Glad I didn't order that! Not much to say, except the beer and burgers were good, and the service was just fine. Not a dinner destination for us, though.

Good burgers and pub food at a nice "road house" style location. One nice feature of the menu is the number of beers that they have on tap--not just the regular bud, miller, Sam Adams, etc. but more interesting and less frequently seen fare as well. On a nice day in the spring and summer summer sitting outside with a burger and a beer...there's not much more you could ask for.

Stopped in Sunday late afternoon for an early dinner. We were sooo disappointed in the food and service. We tried to order one of the specials but the ones we wanted were already sold out. We decided on calamari instead. What we got was over breaded frozen product. The sauce was decent but might have been better served on the side. The waitress never did bring either of us water or bread, although she was by several times. My friend ordered the fish and chips. It was simply god awful. Again, the heavy breading that was uncooked to raw on the inside. The fish was overcooked in spots and undercooked to almost raw in others. Overall it had the texture and taste of reheated fare. To top it off, the coffee at the end of the meal was undrinkable. This used to be a neat, cool place that took pride in it's fare. Sadly we will enjoy the cute look of the exterior as we drive by in the future.

I will not be back. It wasn't horrible, but certainly no reason to go back. It has the makings of a cool bar and grill, but old and dirty. There was food splattered all over the large framed painting behind us on the wall. Just seems like one of those places that Robert Irvine would need to come in to clean up. As for the food, it was bland and not very exciting. I had a burger, that was just ok, my wife had a steak salad and the steak was not done how she asked. I see that people seemed to like their salad dressing online, but I would stay away. It was gritty and nasty looking, with the oil sitting on top in a manner that made me think the oil may have been afraid to touch whatever was under it! It actually looked just plain wrong! We did taste it; not great. Oh! and the most interesting thing that is telling of a restaurant's style.... on the regular menu was a fried oyster appetizer for $10.95, but on the specials insert was the same oyster appetizer as a special for $11.00. I asked if they were the same and the waitress said yes and chuckled to herself....the best part is when she came back and said that she will not be able to charge the regular $10.95 fee and would have to charge me the more expensive "special" fee and added it is just the way the place is. I didn't complain and we ate the special and paid the extra $.05... On a positive note, they did have hard cider on tap, which I love! There are so many great places to eat around here, so there is no need to subject myself or my family to a place.

We thought we would give this place another shot. 3 years ago we had a terrible experience, we came to the Olney Ale House before going to the theater and they forgot to place our order, so we were late for the theater and we had to leave with out eating. Last night I was craving a real burger, so I got one to go. It was half priced burger night and since I was getting it to go I paid full price. Not a problem, I was ok with that. When I got home, I had a small uncooked burger. It was so raw, it wasn't even bloody, it was completely uncooked, I was given hamburger tartar. The fries had absolutely no taste plus they didn't bother to pack any catchup. For my "lovely meal" to go, I was charged $14.00.

We stopped by for a couple beers. Great Beer Tap selection and neighborhood bar feel (see my pictures). The place was hoppin' on a Tuesday night due to "Half Price Burger Night." We planned to go to Mannequin Pis after for the food since many of the other Yelpers were disappointed with the food at Olney Ale House. However, the burgers on the grill smelled divine, and I was caught staring at the other patrons' burgers - soft bun and meat perfectly paired with each big juicy bite... sorry, I didn't mean to stare... I've had two beers, one of which is the Flying Dog Imperial IPA on tap with an ABV of 10.1%. I will be sure to try the food next time and Yelp it. They have an outdoor patio that looked inviting on a nice night. Don't go on Mondays - you'll be disappointed because your only interaction will be with their "Closed" sign.

Visited here and never even got to eat. I was with my family and put my name on the waiting list and watched them seat FOUR tables in front of me who were not on the wait list. I guess the Ale House must have seen we were with our young son and they wouldn't make enough money off of us. When they tried to seat the fifth table in front of me I finally spoke up and was treated very rudely. Picked up my son and left. Adios Ale House. Going to tell all my friends how poorly you treat people.

The Olney Ale House is a great little place to grab a bit to eat and a draft. We popped in this afternoon around 5pm to have burgers. Overall the burgers were good with the blue cheese making mine a slight bit on the dry side. They came with a side of fries which were really good. The atmosphere is relaxing and quaint. I would say that the only real improvement I would suggest is the our server's ability to provide quality service. Everything started well but when the burgers came we needed a refill on ice tea that did not return until the burger was halfway done. After that my Cider had run empty and our server Tigist did not return to us until she saw that the meals were finished. So, we were each thirsty through half our meals. :( Overall we will return but probably ensure we sit at the bar.

Came here after visiting my grandma at Montgomery General so eating here was mostly because we were just hungry and not because we had purposely decided to come here. With that being said, it wasn't bad. My mom used to pick up their loaves of bread pretty often but this was the first time I've actually eaten anything else or been inside. It's a cute restaurant, both inside and out. We got a large loaf of bread before dinner so my dad could take some home after dinner. It was actually probably the best part of the meal. I had the catfish and chips, and while it was fine, it wasn't particularly memorable. Service was good but super slow. I'm pretty sure my dad ended up tipping way more than necessary just so we could actually leave and not hold onto the bill for another 20 minutes.

Great neighborhood restaurant. Good food, very friendly staff, good for kids as well as meeting up with friends. I haven't been able to experience it yet but the bar looks great! Very cozy, good beer selection, seems like a great place to enjoy a beer or three! Closes early though, 11 on the weekends and not open on Mondays. What's the deal with Mondays ion Olney??

I second Jennifer K.'s thoughts. This place has lost its appeal. The fish and chips are disgusting. Their burgers are ok, but probably because I paid half price for it on special. I do enjoy their beer selection, but it's a disappointment when you've seen their food quality degrade and you want the good old days back.

I went to this place Saturday night before going to a play across the street at the Olney Theatre. The service was slow, and they ran out of the nightly special (bbq ribs, which looked pretty good). The food however was good enough to somewhat make up for it. We ordered the fried mushrooms and calamari as appetizers. The mushrooms were good, the calamari was cooked well and came with an interesting sauce, think firecracker shrimp. I ordered a reuben, which was one of the best I've had anywhere. The french fries were also pretty good, if only lukewarm by the time they were served. I would think they would be better at handling the pre-theatre crowd, it's a good thing we left enough time. Overall they get a 4 for food and a 2+ for service, I'll average it at a 3.

Wow - grew up in Olney and I am just now finding out about this place? Who ever thought that Olney would have a little gem like this place?? They have great beers and the service is friendly. There is an outdoor patio that is probably very nice in the summer. Try the salads when you go - I couldn't believe how good the mango Thai salad was. I still have yet to find anything like that anywhere else! This is a go to place for me when I am visiting my parents and am looking for an easily accessible place to hang out with some old friends in Olney. This is a way better option than most of the commercialized places you find in Olney and I am happy to see that they are always busy! Beware they are closed on Mondays...

I have been dining here for 40 years and this place has gone down from great bread, home made soup, fried chicken and stew to food that tastes like it came out of the frozen food case at your local grocery and probably does. Tonight was super salad night. I ordered the grilled chicken salad. It was put together like it was dumped into the bowl The chicken was dry stale tasting pieces of chicken strips in a bag also found at the grocery store. I expected fresh grilled chicken. The barley soup had huge hunks of slimy overcooked beef. The Reuben sandwich was on wet and soggy bread. About the only good thing here are the hamburgers and the beer. Forget the rest of the food. They need major help with their food and their menu. Chef Ramsey needs to visit this place.

I don't really get here that often because I don't live close enough to make it a regular treat. As far as I'm concerned this place is absolutely fantastic. Granted, it's not upper crust, snootyville (even though it's in a hoity toity part of Montgomery County). It's just real comfortable with a nice menu and great homemade bread. Of course, it is an ALE House so there are plenty of brews to choose from as well as stuff that's a tad stronger. It has a nice outdoor eating area which is nothing fancy but nice to use on a nice day. The portions are generous, the food is good, the prices are reasonable and the waitress my friend and I had at a recent lunch was fantastic. The Olney Center for the Arts is right across the street which makes the Olney Ale House a great place for a quick bite before the theater. Two Thumbs Up!

The Onley Ale House is one of those local places that everybody has to visit. Not too great, but certainly not bad. Good, home cooking to be sure. My wife and I are regulars here, about once or twice a month. Their beer selection is good, not as excellent as it is in other places but then since I don't drink beer I'm not bothered. Their burgers are fantastic, and they have a great selection of excellent food. I prefer ordering the chips than the fries - this is an area of weakness for them with soggy, rather than crispy, fries. If you come here during dinner time, be prepared for a bit of trouble parking in their rather small lot. We have parked in the yoga studio lot next door with little problem, and I recommend you do the same. Also, since they don't take reservations, coming with a group means trying to come before or after the busy times.

Been coming here since I was a wee little girl. It's always been an interesting & eclectic crowd -- from bikers to grannies to tree-huggers. Great ambiance & historic location. Very cool place. The food has gone through many transitions with the various owners over the years. It'll never be like it was (beef stew is good but not the delicious bowl of hearty stew that it used to be). The bread is amazing (although you have to ask for honey now), the lemon tahini salad dressing is to die for (makes you actually wished you'd ordered two salads!). Overall the food is either delicious or good. Their desserts are fairly mediocre (sine the old lady they used to have make them stopped). But, with the rest of the food so good, who has room for dessert? 7/2012 It breaks my heart to do this, but I have to update my previous review. I had originally given it 4 stars but because I feel like giving it 2 now I"m going to compromise to 3. Food has just gone down hill. They had a sign out that said drink specials during certain times. We had only about 5 minutes to make the special so we told the host that we had to hurry up and get our happy hour special drink order in! He seated us quickly and when we tried to order, waitress told us we had to be seated in bar area to get the specials. Not cool - the host shouldn't have seated us there if we couldn't get the specials. And upon appealing to the manager, we were still denied. Ugh! There were more issues and the waitress was super nice, and the manager ultimately gave us $15 gift card to come back but frankly, I just don't know if I'll ever use it. Breaks my heart. The Ale House has been a part of our world since I was a wee little girl and it's been great up until the most recent owner where it's gone downhill. Sniff, sniff. Did I say yet how sad this is? Come back to us, Olney Ale House, we'll be waiting!!!

This is a unqiue little place that's been in Olney for years. The inside is reminiscent of the dining room at summer camp...but it's quaint and fun. The food is always good--not terribly creative--more like burgers and sandwiches. But the staff is attentive and nice and I've always had a good experience.

Last few times, the rack of ribs were so, so. The fries were still quite good, but that's not why I go. Great beer selection, as you may imagine.

If you love beer and are looking for a place with a great beer selection, this is a good place to go. If you also like good food you should reconsider, because other than that it is an ale house with food that you can swallow and digest without the immediate urge to spit it out. (I only tried the fish and chips and thought it (fish) was pretty bland and oily.) The ambiance? Seems like a local hang but it didn't resonate with me. Staff seemed pretty nice and friendly though. The price? Drinks are fine but food is definitely not worth what they are asking for. I have no plans to go back but wish them all the best--they could be so much more.

I've been to Olney Ale House quite a few times in the past since I live only about 10 minutes away. I agree with other reviewers who've already stated that the food here has sadly gone way down over the past 5-10 years. It used to be that Olney Ale House was quite popular with vegetarians. They had several interesting sandwiches including my favorite, a vegan version of a club sandwich. All of that is pretty much gone now for years when they overhauled, much for the worse, their menu. Just about the only thing left is a veggie burger which isn't terribly inspired. Once I brought my sister and her two kids here. Someone's order had very large, clumsily cut vegetables....they should have been much smaller and more carefully cut. Just not good presentation of food at all. And OAH used to have some really good and interesting desserts like a caramel breading pudding. Also long gone. The decor also seems tired and run down. Again, it's just sad to see a once-nice place go so far downhill.

As everyone else said, cute upon walking into ( minus no air conditioning) but once seated this was one of the worst eating out experiences i have had in a while. The beer selection was nice but WAY overpriced, at $4.50 for a bud light draft, are you kidding me? Next came our apps, yingling bay scallops, YUCK! They were soaked in so much oil and burnt to a crisp, talk about tasteless, i should have left then, but alas i continued through. We ordered a loaf of bread to take the taste of the scallops out of our mouths and sure enough this "famous oatmeal molasses bread" was as gross as the beginning of the meal. The bread was probably a week old, and only tasted good with a huge slab of butter to accompany it. Again i moved on to my last course, the FAMOUS Fish n Chips. Can anyone say greasy and tasteless. Because of this, I asked politely to talk to a manager only to be greeted by a woman reeking of cigarettes who told me that the fish n chips is "fried so that it is going to be greasy"! I was appalled by the food and treatment i received at this iconic restaurant. I can't believe this place ever got a good review. If i were traveling through Olney or am a local I would skip this disaster, i'd rather go to the Greene Turtle, and that's saying a lot!

Terrible service and food. The soup was cold the fish and chips were so greasy I sent them back. Fish tacos were just as bad and smelled rotten. The only thing that was ok was the oyster appetizer. Also for an ale house the beer selection is only average. These folks need to give chief Ramsey a call. They can do much better.

I haven't been here in quite a while, and I stopped in to eat prior to going to the theater. The best thing: they have a good selection of beer. The appetizer (steak quesadillas) was pretty good, but that was it. My date had the special - fish and chips. The fish was soggy and a bit fishy. Not very good. I had the ribs which were burned, fatty, and full of gristle. I seem to remember that the burgers there were okay, so if you do try the Olney Ale House, it's probably best to stick to burgers and beer. Overall, I don't recommend this place though.

Ate there late on a Tuesday evening because the place we were originally going to was full. Olney Ale House was busy and we found out why - Tuesdays are 1/2 price burgers all day. The price was too good to pass up, so my wife and I both ordered burgers - me the Chipotle Burger and she ordered the BBQ Burger. These were some of the best tasting burgers that we have ever had. They were cooked to perfection and they had a great smokey taste from the grill. I also liked the chipotle sauce on my burger. We will definitely be back for burger night!

I love Olney Ale House because it's one of those places that's tucked away and only locals know about it. It's a local's favorite! The food is not the greatest but the overall atmosphere makes up for it! Good bar selection. They have a decent patio for outside eating in the warmer months. I dig the wood paneling, it reminds me of a log cabin but not really because it's not that remote.

Not worth traveling to if your not in the area, but for Olney this place is the best around, they have two house brews on tap, pretty good beer selection and the food is not bad. The place also looks and feels really cool on the inside that is, the only real issue with them that i have is there closing early hours, they should be open a lot later than they are.

Here comes another negative review! I'm almost embarrassed to be reviewing another terrible place since people probably think I have the worst taste in food ever. I promise I'll write about some amazing places I've been to. It's just that the really amazing places already have enough positive reviews. Plus, hating is just so much fun, isn't it? But I digress. My mom works near this place, and one of her clients suggested it. Just taking a brief glance at the menu, I knew it was going to be bad news bears. If I were wiser, I would've told my mom we were leaving right there and then. Of course my brain was half turned off due to a massive weekend long hangover and I felt bad, already having been seated. We decided to go for the fish and chips and a half pound of steamed shrimp, since my mom was feeling like seafood. Ughhh. The shrimp weren't steamed, they were pan-fried, but they were edible at least. That's more than I can say for the fish and chips. The cod was completely tasteless and the fries seemed to be overfried in oil that needed to be changed a year ago. NEVER AGAIN.

Fish and Chips, which I've had here before and was pretty decent, was pretty terrible tonight. There was entirely too much breading and it wasn't cooked through all the way through. It came out super fast, which is convenient, but not a great indication of the care taken in the food. I would have gladly waited a little longer for fish that was cooked properly. Most of the fish in the mountain of breading was much and the breading was doughy in the middle. We ordered the oysters, and it was apparent that they had sat around after being shucked. They were drying out on the top and the liquor had been dumped out or dried out before being served. My wife ordered a salad, but it wasn't anything to come back for. Next time, I'll be smart and order one of the burgers, which is never a disappointment. I can't knock them for the price of the beer. We're in the United Socialist Republic of Montgomery. They control the price of the beer and they have to charge as much as they do to turn any sort of profit.

I thought about joining Yelp years ago just so I could post my thoughts about the Olney Ale House. Now that I have, prepare for about 7 years of pent up dismay: Let me begin by saying that in the late 80's/early 90's this was my absolute favorite restaurant -- I'd spent many an afternoon & evening there noshing on their gorgeous salads, savory stews & chilis, and freshly baked bread. Their Oatmeal Molasses Bread was always on the menu, but they also had a fresh daily bread, too - some warm and yummy herb bread or country white or something like that. Back then, it seemed to be run by a clutch of the grooviest, hippest family of bakers and chefs. The atmosphere was warm & inviting (maybe even a little too "granola crunchy" for some)-- I remember bringing a book to read if I dined solo. It felt like home. And everything was homemade - from the special stews or the soups of the day to the fish & chips. The place changed hands a few times since the mid 90's and the various, well-intentioned new owners tried to hold on to the essence of the place. For a time I thought I could sense the old earthy baker and the hippie mama stirring her simmering stews -- like friendly ghosts of good meals past. But, then, in 2004/5 the new guard swept in and cleansed the Ale House of it's soul. They replaced the bread boards and the pottery plates with white cheap china & I'm willing to bet that nothing there is made from scratch anymore. They've done away with the daily bread and honey butters. The fish & chips tastes like a resentful line cook threw it in the deep fry and on to your plate. & Every time I drive by and see a Sysco Truck (frozen food purveyors) outside I want to break down and cry. When I cautiously ventured into the Ale House last March, I swore it would be my last visit to this broken down, busted, corrupted version of the original true-blue beauty. BUT: If **you** want over-priced, conveyor belt food, you've come to the right place.

This is one of my favorite 'local spots' because it is cozy (especially if you sit near the fire place), and typically makes great food. I have been there many times and have always gotten the same thing-the govinda salad with grilled chicken (sad I know). I make a mean salad and often have a hard time finding a salad that stands up to one o my own and this definitely does. One of the best things about it is the lemon tahini dressing which I am bound to recreate myself. The unfortunate thing about this place is that it is rather inconsistant. We have had awesome service, we have had awul service. My boyfriend has had a great burger on burger night and he has also had to send his burger back or a re-cook on a different night. Although the Olney Ale House has a special place in my heart, I would have to agree with the mixed reviews. Important to note: Closed Mondays Tuesday is burger night-half off burgers, busy spot Order a small loaf of oatmeal molassas bread-its amazing

Got blindsided by the unexpected 20 percent gratuity for 6 or more. It's a disincentive for waitstaff since tip is guaranteed. Our service was bad. The 20% guaranteed gratuity was not mentioned anywhere on menu: olneyalehouse.com/menu Lots of competition in the area. Wait 'til Greene Turtle opens up the street. Times will change.

I hesitate to give a one star review for two reasons. First, I always figure eventually I will find a place that deserves an even lower rating, and I want to hold some powder. Second, gushing five star reviews and scathing one star reviews often lack credibility. Few places are either truly great or truly terrible. But reading some of the other one star reviews below (and there is no shortage of them!) gives me confidence that my experience was more the norm and that it really was a bad as I perceived it to be. I encourage you to read the other more articulate one star reviews below. They are right on the mark. It is remarkable how well many of them describe the experience we had today. Today I had a really, really bad meal at Olney Ale House. Really bad (the pulled pork sandwich). And my lunch partner's meal was just as bad. Really bad. And both were very overpriced. I'm guessing these people are running at less than 20% food cost, maybe around 15%. That's at the way, way low end of the scale. I was terribly dissappointed. I was a regular at the Olney Ale House in the 80s and early 90s and loved the homey feel and great food. We were in Olney today and and I wanted to have some of that good food I remember. I'll spare you the details -- as I said, check the other one star reviews below. They say it better than I can. The food was ultra cheap low end commercial canned junk. The prices were much too high. My "freshly pulled pork" sandwich was bland, greasy, veins, gristle, blood vessels and other animal parts. Yeah, I guess they were pulled from a pig. But not "pork" in the sense I use the word, and not within the last few months. Disgusting. My lunch partner's meal looked amost as bad -- maybe it was worse. This place used to be a gem. We'd regularly drive 30 miles round trip to eat here. Not anymore. I'd walk 30 miles rather than eat there. I cannot believe this place has any repeat business. Awful. The owners should be ashamed -- trying to milk excessive cash flow by delivering the cheapest of commercial grade food at grossly inflated prices while riding the reputation of an old classic. They will get the cash for now, yes, but they are destroying the goodwill that is the real value. I am reminded of the "corporate raiders" that buy companies, strip them of their assets, goose up cash flow by pushing cheap goods on the reputation of a quality brand, then sell the gutted company at an inflated price based on cash flow that inevitably will crash as the brand erodes. One star for food. Negative five stars for destroying something great that could have and should have endured (and could have and should have been profitable while delivering a good dining experience. Read the other one star reviews. They are spot on. Like they are reading my mind.

Go for the beer selection, not the food. This place kinda makes me sad because it has such potential. It could be such a great neighborhood pub with it's standalone location and homey feel. If only the ownership didn't turn over so much and they invested in a quality chef. Sometimes we go there if we're craving a warm fireplace-and-beer atmosphere, but we're always brought back to earth with a thunk when we order food and it's uninspired as ever. Case in point: $8 nachos that come with cheese, guac, salsa and sour cream. Both the guac and salsa taste like they came from a jar - and not a great one.

I am guilty of loving my own places for sentimental reasons, like many of the people who seem to like the Olney Ale House, so I'm not dissing people for liking a place for being familiar and cozy and holding memories, but as someone with zero history with this place, my opinion is that it is not good. This is a mildly beer-oriented restaurant, the kind you might find in a tourist town, with vinyl tablecloths, plastic glasses, very mediocre food, and teenagers doing a crappy job of running the place. Ate here for a Saturday dinner recently and I have to agree with most of the bad things I've read: 1) Service was bad. It took way too long to get drinks out; they tried taking our order ten minutes after we sat down, but hadn't given us menus in the meantime; appetizer came out after our dinners. They appeared to be trying but generally seemed inexperienced and confused. I didn't see the bill, but it would be robbery to charge 20% gratuity for the crap-ass service we received. 2) Food was OK. Worst ribs I've ever had at a restaurant, with a lot of toughness, fat, and gristle, spare smokiness, and unmemorable sauce. They also serve them on a plate that is way too small, and provide no bowl or plate for the bones, so I eventually gave up the chore of trying to eat something I didn't really want to eat anyways. Other things at the table looked OK. Fries are the detestable coated kind. Their famous bread is fine but as I ate it I was thinking "OK, am I missing something?". The slaw was really good, so much better than everything else that I actually wondered if they bought it pre-made. 3) Ambiance was nice. I like places with a mix of people and with families, and this place had both. I don't like swatting flies off the rim of my glass, but it is summer, and the door was standing wide open. What's weird is that if I got dragged here again I'd probably look forward to it. Even though it sucks, I kind of liked it, so I'm with you, sentimentalists.

If you like fancy beer -- you'll like the beer here. Otherwise, the food is just so-so, I had the catfish and chips - very little fish, mostly breading and the fish that was there was very watery. Warm and cozy but dark and crowded feel. No need to come back.

Burgers and fries are consistently fantastic. I've never once been disappointed -- and the chipotle burger is off the charts -- delicious chipotle mayo, hearty juicy burger and incredible crunchy beer battered (I think!) fries. I go here just for those sometimes! The bar area is adorable -- feels like you stepped back in time in a cute English pub. I just adore this place. Bathrooms are TINY but workable -- not really handicap accessible just FYI. Overall -- its a great place :)

When I first reviewed this place back in 2006, i did like it and it was a local place to drink but since then has gone significantly down hill. The once famous beef stew and chili, now look more like leftovers from last week. It also lacks any sort of flavor. They also have raised the prices in the last few years and have not provided anything more for the new price. Also, new management came in and they are not as friendly as they once were. The beer selection is still excellent. the owners and bar tenders (especially Stephen) really make an effort at bring in good different beer while still having some old stand-bys in case you can't decide. If not for the beer they would have received a lower rating. But don't take my word for it, see for yourself. The reviews are mixed for this place. You go eat there and tell us what you think.

Pretty decent place. Good sandwiches/burgers. Good soup. Good beer selection. Reasonably priced. It's got kind of a home/cozy vibe. Like you're walking into someone's living room. Interesting.

This place has so much potential - or perhaps its just on a ebb from it's glory days. A very cute little spot, with my type of atmosphere. The food is decent and reasonably priced and the staff is very friendly. My only complaint is that if you are going to call yourself an Ale House you should focus more on the ... well Ale. Aside from a beer menu at the table they really didn't play up what they had on tap. Then again it was 1 o'clock on a Thursday - so perhaps they didn't expect anyone to want a brew with lunch.

We visited on a recent Sunday at lunchtime. The service was slow, we had to ask for things, they forgot one order, and the food was not so good. One of us had fried catfish, most of us had fish n chips and one order of the Sunday Pot Roast Special. The pot roast came out with gravy that looked like glue, the fish n chips very quickly became soggy - while we all politely waited for the missed order- and the portions were too large. My portion was not cooked thoroughly either. The server never asked us if we wanted anything else to drink past the initial order, and never even offered water. We will never return.

The Olney Ale House is a pleasant old place - it's got that quasi-colonial charm that you don't always find in the greater DC area. The food is decent, but not superb. The sandwiches are generous and come with fries that are dangerously addictive. My wife swears by their salads, but I've found them to be just average. They have a great beer selection, albeit on the pricey side. Probably the best time to come is in the fall or spring, when the temperatures outside are moderate. Since it's such an old building, it's got poor ventilation, so expect to be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. But if the weather is truly nice, try to sit outside on their deck. Anyway, don't come here for exceptional food. It's decent pub grub. But if you want to kick back with a beer and get a sandwich, you could do a lot worse than the Ale House.

We tried the Olney Ale House this past Saturday. We were looking to try something new and are always on the lookout for something local and unique. From the reviews I was excited to try the Tap house. The previous descriptions of the decor are spot on, a homey feel, lots of wood and beer but the failed to mention that your dining guests would include lots and lots of flies, ick. They have a very large selection of beer which was impressive. The menu is not extensive, very few choices that I would say are "bar food items", which was disappointing. We ordered steaks and they were awful, tough, over cooked, and almost inedible. The bread that people were raving about, nasty there is better bread at Outback. Our server seemed very overwhelmed and in a constant state of rush which made him a poor server. I'm sad to report that this exercise in "trying something new" was a desperate failure. We won't be going back to the Ale house. Maybe if you don't eat out Downtown much or live on a farm you may like it, there were plenty of "Cougars" on the prowl in their flannel and sequins. So if that's what you are looking for you found the right spot! Others...stay away.

I'm sorry to say this place has really gone down hill since the last two changes of ownership. The variety of beers is excellent but the food is nowhere near what it used to be. A damn shame for sure.

This place used to be pretty good about 5-6 years ago, before the owner/management changed. Now the food is slimy, greasy, overpriced and of limited selection. It's always empty whenever the half priced burgers temp me in off the street. The Ale House is the type of place where you feel gouged and taken for without being an appreciated guest. Almost $5 domestic drafts (Budlight, Miller, etc.) and a split plate fee of $2.50 a person which wasn't on the menu for a looonggg time. (which means if you and your friend are getting two entrees and sharing its $5). All and all I try not to go here.

Great local hang out. Good selection of beer (on tap and in the bottle); good pub food with a little flair off the expected.

Ah, sweet memories. I've heard the Ale House has gone down a bit in quality since I was last there, but this was the best bar in the Silver Spring area when I was a D.C. resident. Quaint old home like feel, wooden plank floors, country like setting. Ten years ago the Olney Ale House was sequestered back in the woods, but not that far from strips malls and busy intersections. When I go back this summer I'm sure to find it surrounded by suburbia, an unfortunate victim of urban sprawl. Now the food. My favorite food was always the soft shelled crab sandwich that the OAH did to perfection. The fried oyster sandwich was also incredibly tasty. With a variety of beers on tap the ale house lived up to it's name. The dining area was large with plenty of room to move around unfettered, the bar was cool and antique, a throwback to the 1800's when establishments like the ale house were overnight stops for travelers on horseback. It's too bad places like the Olney Ale House are being pushed out. For my money, they should declare the OAH an historic landmark.

It used to be great, but it just keeps going downhill. The Olney Ale House (really closer to Sandy Spring) has been an institution since I moved to the area 30 years ago. Back then, it was a pre- and post- theater gathering spot for the Olney Theater across the street, and also very popular locally with a wide variety of micro-brew beers. Homemade bread and hearty beef stew were the main items on a limted food menu. The old house had a big fireplace and rustic interior that made it warm and inviting. But half the patrons preferred to stay outside on the big patio, even in cold weather. But then it changed hands. The new owners redecorated and focused on a vegetarian menu. They kept the beer and the bread. It changed ownership again. And again. Each time with more renovations, and a more mundane menu. The food is now mediocre at best, and all the charm is gone. Its just an old house with painted walls and new siding. They even sealed the fireplace. The locals now run to a place on the other side of Olney, and the Olney Ale House survives on its reputation and spillover from the theater. I'm sad to have witnessed its slow but steady decline.

Recently went to this place for the half price tuesday burgers. My friend and I were both quite ill after eating here. My friend mentioned that he thought there was actually spit on the lettuce. The burgers were mashed up and falling apart. Frankly, we were both extremely dissapointed considering how long this place has been in business. They definitely have some people working in the kitchen who don't care. I won't be back and I am a local.

Three stars plus an extra because this place is so special and holds so many memories for me. I moved to Silver Spring my first year out of college and had the most wonderful year ever. The Olney Ale House played a prominent role in that year, and a few subsequent ones, and although I haven't been there lately, I really miss it. This was when Olney was really off the beaten path, and Clarksville was simply too far away to even consider. It was like a local treasure, kind of in the woods, and by a cool old theater. I am sure the area is overrun with townhouses and hideous mcmansions by now, but the Ale House has a charm that bad city planning can't keep down. It's that kind of place. The bread, the rustic vibe, the crunchy people, the outdoor tables...I miss this place!

The Olney Ale House is my family's fall back choice when we're eating out and don't know where to go. We love OAH because everyone can find something on the menu, the prices are reasonable, and it offers a convenient location with a cool, casual vibe. Others are right that the service can be spotty, and you're best sticking with basic fare. Waits can also be lengthy, but we enjoy saddling up to the bar and sampling some brews in the meantime. *Warning: Because of its proximity to both the theatre and the "new" Good Counsel high school, plan your visits around big sporting events / shows to avoid the crowds.

I didn't grow up in this area, so I was unaware of the Olney Ale House, but it's apparently been around for a long time. Very casual environment, fun. We've only sat outside. Lots of beer which is fun, I think there were over 70 selections. It's been awhile since we were last there, but I recall the fries were good and I think I had a Californian sandwich which was very good. I haven't had an "entree", but the sandwiches that my family has had were fine.

Consistently good with relaxed ambiance, this place feels like a standard British pub. The service is usually very good, though we have had a few misses. Their fish and chips are good and taste very authentic. Most of the things are their menu are good, though the vegetable sides are usually pretty tasteless.

The Ale House is a local institution. It used to be better, with a more casual menu and vibe, but I think the ownership changed. The food is stil pretty good, though, and beer selection is awesome. Lots of Belgians if you're into that. Food basics are the chili, the homemade bread, lemon tahini dressing, and the Jose Sandwich (turkey, sprouts, pickles, blue cheese dressing) The Jose is part of some of my oldest "eating out" memories since my parents have lived in Olney since I was ten. I don't think it's as good as it used to be, and I don't think that's just the dimming of my memory over time. The restaurant and bar are closed on Monday, so don't come out then...but try another night, like "Steak Night" - I think it's a Wednesday. My mom and I stopped in, and I went for it, although I always get the sandwich. It was a really good steak! Gotta love the Ale House. You can't really help it.

As you drive by this classic establishment, you will notice in the front lawn what the special of the days is. Sunday Pot Raost, Fish and Chips Friday, but no matter what day of the week it is, the food is always good. The Peela nd eat shrimp, cooked in butter is worth the calories, The house beer is refreshing on a hot day. They have a great outdoor patio, and a cozy dining room. A great place to hang with a bunch of friends or a quiet casual date.

I was actually debating if I wanted to give my first 1 star rating, but I guess I'm just too forgiving. While my friends were complaining about the service - it was slow for the most part, I can overlook that if the food was good. I don't drink too much hence I rarely go to bars or pubs to eat. So based on the food alone after 1 visit, I likely will not be returning. The menu was disappointing, but maybe I was hoping for more from a bar. What we were served was marginal at best. Not awful, but definitely NOT good. Maybe if you have a few beers before eating it would taste better I suppose. I had a small rack of ribs that were both burned and cool at the sme time. The beef stew was very watery like soup, and the chocolate lava cake was barely warm. Not impressed in the least. Sorry - I hate to rag on a place, but it makes me wonder why this place is so popular when you can get a better dinner at Applebees which I hate!

The worst fish and chips i've ever had. The fish was soggy with grease and inedible. The only saving grace for this place was the location and atmosphere. It's kinda nestled in the woods and has nice seating outside. But the fish and chips suck.

Unfortunately it's located a bit away from DC for me to visit anymore, it's a great place for locals to hang out. Lots of great beers on draft, a nice outdoor seeting area, and the inside has a warm comfy feel to it. Definitely a place to bring a group for happy hour after work. Food is good, typical bar menu, you're really here for the "ale." ;^)

I dream about the Jose II - turkey and bleu cheese. It is my all time favorite sandwich. I use to work at another local resturant that was really quite good - but all of us staff would come here to eat.... Excellent beer selection, cool vibe, and I have always had excellent service.

The Ale House has a long history, yes -- but it changed hands about 10 years ago and has steadily declined in the interim. I used to eat there once or twice a month, in the old days. Now? Once or twice a year, and I am always disappointed. The food is overpriced and just isn't good -- recently I had the $13 chicken pot pie, which was so peppery I could taste nothing else, and was basically a bowl of gravy/chicken/veg with a square of separately-cooked (at another time -- it was cold) puff pastry. Seriously? I've also had undercooked burgers there - raw in the center when I'd ordered well-done (b/c I was pregnant - not a good time to be served raw meat), Jose sandwich came with mushrooms when I asked for none, etc. Really, I have not had a decent meal there in years, and I only keep going back because I so badly want it to be what it once was, and I think it's time to give up.

I dont know what the place was like 5 or six years ago, but I go there for the Fish n chips with a nice Black and Tan. You're at an Ale house. Have a beer. The fish n chips and atmosphere reminds me a little of Ireland. Decor is fitting, staff is quick and friendly. Beer is good. What more is there?

I have eaten here several times. I moved from maryland, but ate there a few nights a go while back for a visit. Plenty of beers. Personally didn't think they were overpriced. Had a full rack of rib which I thought were quite tasty. Service was great. Very nice decor and quite comfortable.

Worst Ribs on Earth. Other than that its ok. Ive been there many times. Nice atmosphere. Price is not shocking. Lots of beer i guess. Its small and often busy so service is not the fastest.

Very unfriendly manager refused to seat us in a nearly empty restaurant because three people in our party had not yet arrived. We explained that we wanted to order drinks and appetizers while we waited, but she made it clear that our business was unwanted. We had driven an hour to meet our daughter, in town from Texas for two days, and our one opportunity to spend some time with her was restricted to a cold and drafty entry way. By the time we got seated, there was no time for drinks and appetizers, so the restaurant lost that revenue as well as any future business or recommendation from us.

what a history this place has. been in business more than 20 years right next to olney theatre (i never been there, btw). it resemble a residential house more than a restraurant. in fact it must have been originally. here u can find sandwidches with fresh vegetables. good beer. well let me be more descriptive. something about drinking draft beer at a old place like this which u can not get from a chain or more modern joint.
