Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I love Plaza Mexico! Very friendly atmosphere and service. Food is very good! The jumbo margaritas are quite tasty. I prefer this location over the Huntingtown one...no low ceiling- you don't feel like a Hobbit in this one- and it is very open and cheerfully decorated. The menu has something for everyone. I love having Plaza Mexico here in the beach!
(5)Jayne S.
The Burrito Cancun is delicious! I get it ALL the time. Plus you can't go wrong with the cheese dip for your nachos. And to wash it all down let me suggest the Margarona or the Coronarita or whatever it's called its the big ol' margarita with a big ol' beer tipped upside down in it.

Within walking distance of my house. We went there on the business opening weekend and it far surpassed my expectations, especially compared to the other restaurants in the area. I got quesadillas and it was delicious! The chips were great, the salsa was fresh. Very excited to go back when the diet is over ;) The staff was also awesome-- especially for the opening weekend. Glad a yummy restaurant is in North Beach finally.

Seated us quickly although busy Friday night, waiter was pleasant, efficient and service was fast. Chips and salsa was good but it was the best part of the meal. Had enchiladas supremas, sauce probably from a can reminded me of Chef Boyardee gone south of the border. Not good. Wife said her sampler platter was ok. We desperately need a Mexican restaurant here so I hope they up their game and succeed.

This review is comparing Plaza Mexico to Mexico Restaurant in Huntingtown, MD. Margarita was right on par...very strong! Food however, was under par. The guacamole dip was just ok. Large chucks of tomatoes and not quite as flavorful. Chips and salsa was good. Shrimp fajitas were not that great. Not a lot of flavor. Huntingtown is much better! Waiter was not all that friendly. We were waiting for another couple to join us, so in addition to our 2 waters, we asked that he bring 2 add'l glasses of water for the other couple. He only came back with the 2 for us. When he didn't hear us when we were ordering, he would respond with a "huh"? As opposed to a "I'm sorry"? or "pardon"? Next time, I'll make the extra drive time to Huntingtown.

They always have great coupons and the food is Amazing!! They have the freshest Guacamole makes me wonder if the have some trees growing in the back :0) Try the Steak Taco Salad you won't be dissatisfied!! I don't drink so I can't comment on the Margaritas but everyone that's drinking them sure look happy!!
(5)Rachel B.
My husband and I came in when it first opened in the morning. The service was quick and the server was very good. We had the Guadalajara special and a grande special. The guacamole tasted fresh and the food was delicious! Will def come back when I'm in town :)

Surprisingly good! I wasn't sure what to expect, having never been to the area before, but this place came highly recommended so I came in with high hopes...and I wasn't disappointed. First of all, the service was fantastic.....super friendly staff, very attentive. And they make fresh guac right at your table.....and while I'm not a crazy guac fan, this was actually very good. Moving on to dinner, I ordered the Pollo Yucatan, which was marinated grilled chicken with grilled veggies over rice....delicious! My date ordered the Chori Pollo, which was even better than mine. Chicken covered with chorizo and cheese......really, I should have just taken his! Not sure when I'll be back in the neighborhood, but when I am you can bet I'll stop by.
(5)Uteaka K.
We went there for dinner last night!!! I thought it was great! It was about a 15min wait, which they sat us earlier. It was super busy and we got our food really fast. Our server was Very attentive and he was on top of everything. The food was delicious!!! I had chicken w/ chorizo & my husband had The Jalisco plate (chicken and steak). We also had the queso dip (Yum!) oh and table side guacamole. I'm from Cali and this reminds me of authentic Mexican, delicious! So much food! So many leftovers. We will Definitely go back!!!!
(5)Joshua R.
Can only comment on the service since we had nothing to drink or eat. In 30 minutes the waiter never came by even after getting up and asking for service twice.

They win hands down for the best Manhattan, guacamole and flan I have ever had. The Manhattan was made with Johnny Walker Black and was smooth as silk. The guacamole was made to order right at the table. The bowl was enormous and so, so tasty. The flan was dense, creamy and just the right amount of sweet. Those were just the big standouts. Everything else was crazy good too. I had enchiladas and the hubby had something along the lines of surf & turf. We both agreed it was some of the best Mexican we have ever had. As folks from the West Coast we could not have been more surprised and pleased. One of the best meals we had on our East Coast roadtrip.
(5)Holiday J.
This place is nice, but nothing to write home about. Kind of bland in seasoning. I had buritto, enchilada and taco combo; it was mehhh...:(. However, my friend, had a fabulous burrito loco with beef tips and his was the best of our of our two meals! He also ordered a beef quesadilla and he felt it was not $4.00. We were really hungry so this hit the spot. Service is friendly. No military or other discounts--I always ask... we'll probably give them our money again, as this may be our third visit over the las few years.
(3)Christie C.
Very good and authentic Mexican food. Have the guacamole lady come over with her cart and mix it up fresh and to your liking. You won't be disappointed. I've eaten here over 30 times. Every meal is amazing and delicious. My main complaint is the noise. I wish the restaurant would install acoustic panels on the ceiling to alleviate this problem. Because of the noise I will only dine there when it's not busy.
(4)Brittany P.
There's a fantastic table side guacamole cart. Chips and salsa are great too. Not too many vegan options, make sure to specifically ask for no cheese even if it's marked in the menu not to have it. Would go back!
(3)George F.
I went there on sunday and ate outside. I had the best meal it was a totilla with refried beans and pork with lettuce and sour cream it was amazing i ate the whole thing
(5)Bruce H.
Bar service horrible. Busy doing side work and stocking to get you a drink. Ignored for periods of time. Salsa weak. Chips fair. Great big screen tvs.
(3)Brian K.
I have previously had good service, but the service has been just awful as of late. On our last trip, the waitress was rude and inattentive. The food is okay and is the only Mexican place in the area. It is generally very loud and cleanliness is so-so."
(2)Brad W.
They came out of the gate strong when they opened a while back, but the service and quality of their food has since declined. Still a good dining experience, but some of their dishes could be reworked imo. Their cheese enchilada's could definitely use a makeover! Average margaritas, prices are good for the area.
(3)Doug G.
The Margarita had almost no Tequilla. The burrito had burnt chicken inside and lacked any flavor at all. Way too bland for Mexican food. The bathrooms were filthy. Very disappointing.
(2)Crystal A.
The service was very quick! I received my food quicker than McDonald's! The food was tasty and reasonably priced. The margaritas are the best in the area! They do not cheat you out of alcohol which is wonderful. A drink you would make yourself at home.
(4)Hetax P.
Always a big line on Friday summers and I felt like my food was rushed but drinks were decent.
(3)Elisabeth T.
I didn't really like the food and it wasn't really what I expected. A lot of people really like this place, so maybe I'm missing something. On the plus side it's a great location near the Bay and easy to get to while going to the Farmers Market or other beach activities.
(2)Jay N.
I love this place. I haven't had a bad dish yet & the margaritas the best I've ever had. The table side fresh made guacamole is out of this world. Service is good too! If you haven't been to this current location, you're missing out!!!!!!!
(5)Chareena A.
Delicious. Free chips and salsa. Great guacamole :) Overall, pretty good food, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it authentic.
(5)Holly W.
Great find for the area, service was attentive and food was really good. We ordered the Vallarta, which tasted as great as the presentation (served in a pineapple). There were a couple of large parties at the restaurant, but we never got the feeling of over overlooked.
(4)John S.
Great food! Been a number of times and it's consistently fantastic. This is a true fun service mexican authentic restaurant.
(5)Holly D.
Good food, good atmosphere, and it fits the needs of my SoCal native husband. Make sure to arrive early on the weekends - wait times get up there on Friday and Saturday nights.
(4)Angie P.
Excellent food, acceptable service and well priced. Reminds me of west coast Mexican restaurants. Definitely coming back.
(5)Nona K.
Our realtor gave us a gift card for this place. We enjoyed it, and have returned multiple times. The service is friendly and prompt. They serve quick eats to full meals. We like the pitcher of salsa they serve with your chips. The bar area has multiple flat screen TVs showing sporting events. The restaurant is very family friendly. The price range is reasonable.
(4)C J.
Great food. Get the guac. Awesome drinks.
(4)Jennifer C.
Excellent food, service, and prices! The chips, guac, and salsa were fabulous! Wasn't sure what to expect in this little town by the Bay, but we certainly were not disappointed. Will definitely make another stop our next time through town.
(5)Lee F.
I was pretty disappointed when Thursday's moved out of this location. Then I was elated to hear a Mexican restaurant was moving in! Then I ate here shortly after it opened, and I'm disappointed again. We love Mexican, but this was not all that great. The salsa is too tomato-based, and the chicken in my enchilada tasted canned. We'll probably give it another shot to see if they improved after their initial opening.
(3)Andrea D.
Let me start by saying the management here is horrific! We were being seated when the manager tried stopping us saying it was someone else's table.... Um, we are the only people here. The server continued to seat us while the manager was trying to hold the table for some of his friends. Real nice, apparently this happens frequently. The salsa is very salty and bland. The food was okay, but there are much better places to go spend your money.
(1)Robert K.
Always excited for new places in North Beach. But disappointed again. My wife and I ordered two Cadillac Marguerite and they were horrible. I never complain about a strong drink but could not get past first few sips - a first! The food was average at best with which appeared to be pressed beans like a bean paste in my burrito. My wife's enchiladas were not better (how can you get cheese wrong?). One and done...
(2)Alejandra G.
This place is an abomination to Mexican cuisine. I walked in with low expectations to begin with and left extremely disappointed. I am not returning. I am a first generation Mexican-American who grew up eating the real thing here in the US and in Mexico. This food they are serving lacks effort. They are the only place offering Mexican food, so why bother attempting to be the best? Have they no pride? The prices are reasonable but the menu has too many options (all of which I can't imagine are any good). I asked for an enchilada poblana and the waiter immediately insisted I wouldn't like it as if he knew my personal tastes in the first 2 minutes he'd been at our table. He insisted so much that he failed to actually give me what I ordered and instead gave me the mole on the side. The mole was the only authentic tasting thing on the table and it was the one thing I was repeatedly refused! How's that for service? The chips were cold and greasy, and the salsa was bland. Overall I was not impressed. The only thing I was happy about was that I didn't spend that much money.
(1)Seth G.
Was there after the annual polar bear plunge. Got there before the place got packed. The service was fabulous. They were on top of things. As food for the food, it was just OK.
(2)Gwen M.
Went on a Saturday evening with friends. Everyone enjoyed their food. Chips and salsa were nice and hubby had flan for dessert and liked it as well. Only complaint- price of my margarita was $9.25! Nothing special (no upgraded alcohol) and slightly larger but not worth the price!
(4)Torey G.
Top nachos! Great food at great prices, excellent service and a clean establishment! Get the Speedy Gonzalez lunch special and a big ole margarita!
(5)John J.
I visited North Beach for the first time yesterday with a friend, and after walking the boardwalk for a while, we decided to get something to eat. We were happy to stumble upon Plaza Mexico. Pros: -Quick service: Entered, ate, and left in under an hour. -Large menu: Pretty standard for any Mexican restaurant of this type. -Decent food: What would be expected from an average Mexican restaurant. Cons: -Inaccurate menu: I ordered a combination platter, expecting the dish to come with a side of rice and beans, as stated on the menu. When my plate arrived without the sides, I questioned the waiter. He told me what I ordered was a vegetarian dish, not a combination platter, and therefore did not come with the sides. Positive of what I read, I asked for a menu, and showed the waiter that what I ordered was indeed a combination platter. He insisted that I was wrong, claiming that, even though the plate I ordered was in the combination dinners section, it was part of the vegetarian dinners section below it. -Not upfront about prices: The restaurant has an employee who comes around with a cart to each table, offering to make fresh guacamole. Assuming this was free like the chips and salsa, my friend said yes and the employee proceeded to make the guacamole. I was curious, so I asked how much it would be, and the employee then stated it would be an extra $6.95. Not a big deal, but I wouldn't have been happy if it showed up on the check without my knowledge. -Language barrier: I understand very well that this is a Mexican restaurant, but the waiter and the guacamole cart person were both nearly incomprehensible. My friend and I may or may not return to Plaza Mexico. If we do, we will be sure to ask questions at every step to be certain of what we are ordering and what we will be paying.

I'm thrilled there is a non-seafood option at the beach now, almost excited enough to give it five stars. But really, it's just ok. We've been there twice and both times staff seemed less than thrilled to be seating or serving us. The second time I brought my 12 month old son only to find that they had no high chairs with working straps/clips available. How long have they been open? I've been happy with the food, but I like the run of the mill Mexican/American fare. The salsa is very mild. The menus goes on and on for pages. I like that they offer a less expensive, smaller portion lunch menu as well. Overall, for us beach-residents, it's a solid go-to choice now. Otherwise, I wouldn't go out of your way to find the place.
(3)Hely M.
Dropped in for lunch. Food was good. Margarita was run of the mill. Waiter was very accommodating. I look forward to stopping in again.
(3)Shari R.
I have been there a few times now. The service has always been warm and friendly. When this place is popping on Farmers Market night they have a good flow and effectiveness of getting you seated. Margaritas are very tasty!!! Food is pretty good but Im disappointed that the beans and rice that come with your plate is a bit sparse. Beans and rice are pretty cheap so I would expect more than the little spoonfuls of each. Good local joint and glad to have it in town.
(4)Frederic H.
This place aims to deliver the Mexican standards, and delivers -- and sometimes more than delivers. The chile verde is exceptional: carnitas with a green salsa. The tamal (i.e., tamale) came with a slightly sweet brown sauce (mole?) that was quite good. The aroz con pollo made my daughter happy, while the enchiladas and fajitas were rated okay. (The beef was a bit dry on the fajitas, so perhaps shrimp and chicken alone are the way to go.) As for the drinks: the riesling disappointed. (We'll go with the margarita next time.) The mojito was large and had plenty of fresh mint but was more tart than I am used to. The server asked specifically for my reaction to the mojito and was happy to sweeten it up for me. In general, the server was attentive and professional without being obsequious. The food was prepared with lightening speed. If you want unpretentious Mexican standards you might travel quite a ways to find something better.
(4)Scott M.
Don't think, just go.
(5)Doug C.
Not bad. Just your average "mexicanish" joint as far as the menu is concerned. The food is decent quality for the cheap price. They have a woman that makes table side guacamole that is very good. Good place for a quick bite to eat as long as you understand that 9.95 isn't going to get you a Michelin 3 star dinner.
(4)Maya C.
Yikes, was it real Mexican food or they were trying to fool the locals! I ordered the greasiest veggie quesadilla. My bf ordered a chimichanga that was not made properly! The rice looked like it was seating there for a day. Not made fresh. My side of guac, lettuce, tomato and sour cream was the only good part. My sangria was sweetened with the strawberry daiquiri drink.. Just very disappointed about the food. I will skip this place next time I am in North Beach.
(1)Jo Jo W.
We sat on the patio, munching chips and salsa and enjoying the bay breeze and the shade of an umbrella. It was great to find a dog friendly restaurant in town, especially since the beach itself is off limits to dogs. The service was friendly and fast, and the food was solid: Perfectly cooked carnitas with delicious refried beans. The Tilapia and Crab dish was nice. There should have been more crab....but it was fun to find lima beans in the rice.

Big endless menu,Food lousy missing flavor poor meat and chicken quality , ordered pineapple chicken scallops shrimp ,very lousy mistry chicken meat, and chicken breast test and chews like rubber it slices very thin .good drinks , service could be much better , cheap dinner napkin worse than toilet paper, rest room dirty, no hand towels , exposed electric wires from restroom wall. The place to be if you don't know what you are eating .for me never again . Sam A
