Roadhouse joint. The bar, with eight TV'S, lops off a corner of the rectangular space. Brickabrack decor. Bar food, of course, burgers and sandwiches at 9-10 dollars, and some other entrees such as steak and pasta. I got the Cuban sandwich, tasty filling on a fresh lightly toasted roll, and crisp slaw well seasoned enough that I did not need to add salt or pepper. Buffalo crisps had a nice kick, with plenty of fresh carrots and celery. Bourbon and ginger ale was served in a mug, and and honest shot of booze, only $4.50. The only hassle was the fact that there is a median across the entrance - you can only enter from southbound Connecticut and must exit southbound as well.

This place is the absolute worst...food, ambiance, service, drinks, oh and did I mention the food? Save yourself the trip...go elsewhere folks!

This place is in my neighborhood and I have visited a few times. The food and service is decent, but the clientele is a fun group of people who were very friendly to me. I went there recently and everyone was welcoming. I would only suggest that they have some better variety of draft beers and better TV screens for watching sports. Otherwise, nice place and I will come back.

I'm not sure exactly what to say about this place. It seems kinda nice, but I'd like to say the following; Maybe the waiter knew I wasn't a member, but I ordered a club sandwich, and what I got instead was a regular turkey sandwich. I was too hungry to send it back. Last turkey club I got there was quite good, but I don't know how I got away with getting one. I think updating the place with more modern look would be better. Would definitely help with the grungy feel. In terms of quality of food, I would say it's inconsistent, but when it's good it's real good. A more lively service would be better. The few times I've been there, it looked like the staff was bored, or dealing with each other's personal stuff. It has potential.

This is the worst eating establishment I have ever been to in my life. The food was absolutely inedible and I can't say much about the dreadful service here either. Stay away from this place if you know what's good for you.

Just attempted happy hour at this joint and although they were friendly my margarita had three bugs in it. I wasn't given a hard time when I pointed it out l, I would recommend you check your food/drinks before partaking. Dive bar atmosphere.

General American food, but tasty and not terribly expensive. Very old interior but it's kind of quaint. The waitress remembered my friends (this was my first time) and was very friendly.

Stopped in for lunch after house hunting. The bosses wanted to go to Chipotle but for some weird reason they were closed, so we came here. I really didn't expect much from this place, it looks on the inside as it does on the outside. Standard menu, I opted to try the snow crab legs and I didn't get sick or anything so, I'm happy! One boss got a reuben and the other got a cheesesteak. They said it was what it was, nothing great and nothing terrible. I got steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes with gravy for my two sides and honestly, the vegetables tasted weird. They came with odd flat packets of butter that couldnt really be spread on them. The mashed potatoes were...interesting...I basically just took one bite and called it a day. It's just one of those okay places. They could seriously use a major rennovation and they need to lower the amount of items on the menu. Just keep it simple and improve those. They could do great things with the place if they could just put a little money into it. I will say the location seems to be unfortunate, I can imagine someone having too much to drink and getting into an accident trying to navigate their way out of there.

General American food at a relatively inexpensive price. I would generally call it a five bar for Kensington, but it's a slight step up from that. The food is always reasonable, never excellent. Service is always slow, but courteous. It's a consistent spot. I will return.

Everything that a has been said about this place is absolutely true. Love it or hate it... This place is what it is! Take it or leave it. Lol and that's how they roll. I liked the greasy ruben.

If you are in Kensington and don't have a car, or a friend you want to drink with at home, or self-respect go to Savannah's. It is a local drunk spot, without a shred of style or class, but you can find some nice people hanging out there and the staff are always pleasant.

Ordinary American Fare. Nothing special, save for the ingress of drunks. The bartender doesn't cur people off who are clearly not capable of saying "when". It's sad to watch, along with what a paltry offering in terms of food quality (right out of a box/bag/can), microwaved to nothingness.

2.5 stars is low. 3-3.5 seems right, though. Very basic, no frills place. Decor, eh. Food, solid. Roomy. Tables & booths. Half restaurant a bar. Private parking.

Went there with my husband after closing night for a musical he was part of. It was late when we got there, so the kitchen was already closed. I really like it when a bar has a simple late night menu. A turkey sandwich does night suffice as late night menu. We were there for Saturday night karaoke, my husband and I both put in song before other cast members did, but we were skipped. We were told that there were to many people who put in requests for ours to be granted. Yet a woman who was singing when we came in, got to sing again. I thought karaoke etiquette was first come first serve along with being added to rotation in order of song requested? Not pleased at all with the karaoke person. Drinks were overpriced for that bar. There is no reason for a miller beer to be $4 or for my soda to be $2.50. When my husband went to pay our overpriced tab, the bartender took forever to get us our tab. He just kept puttering around. Finally a female bartender helped so we could pay our tab and leave.

This place has a bizarre feel to it. I was there shortly after 9pm on a Saturday and the kitchen was already closed (although I was told they could make me a cold turkey sandwich.....is the bartender selling these on the side?....) The karaoke going on was pretty abysmal and the youngsters who were enjoying the karaoke were not old enough to drink and covered all the booths in the dining room with their sodas and water. They weren't enjoying themselves as much as the drunk old men hitting on them. As for me, I sang my song and left with my dignity intact. Not particularly impressed. The last time I was there, I saw two drunks fighting over a drug debt on the patio. I suppose this time was an improvement although I still wouldn't return.

A decent place, not many if any sit down restaurants in this part of Kensington.

I live close by and every couple of years I go in there hoping it has somehow improved. It has not. Had dinner at Savannah's a couple of nights ago and left wishing I had gone somewhere else. The burger I ordered was dry and flavorless but at least the fries were good enough to save this review from being 1 star. I got an iced tea that tasted like it was made from sink water and the waiter seemed like he was counting down the minutes to when he could get out of there! So I would say that if all the other restaurants in the Kensington area are closed, then go to Savannah's. Perhaps the bar is more of a reason to there but I am not a drinker so I can't say.

I like Savannah's because it is solid bar food. The french fries are pretty awesome. I've had their black and bleu burger and their Savannah's sandwich. The savannah's is a pretty good take on a Reuben and greasy and cheesy if your into that sort of thing. I like the ambience and it seems like a fair place to catch a game or a couple brews.

The average star rating of this place is spot-on. My wife and I drive by this place all the time and decided to give it a whirl for a Saturday lunch. We weren't disgusted by the place but won't be coming back. The wait staff is friendly and fairly attentive but the food is just...average to below-average. My burger was lukewarm and pretty darn pink inside (I'd asked for medium). My wife got the Rueben and it was literally dripping with grease the whole time she tried to eat it. Our fries were the crispy beer-battered kind and were pretty good. But they too were lukewarm. There are better places in the area to go to when you're craving that solid American style food (Olney Ale House is just a few miles up the road and has the best burgers in the area). Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Savannahs.

I like Savannahs for a quick drink or bar food. Don't go there for a nice dinner meal or to impress your new date! But you can definitely bring her/him back for Karoake on the weekends.

I can't complain about Savannah's -- and I am a first-rate complainer. It's cozy, it's local, it's genuine. The food is pretty decent diner grub, the service is nice. You want someplace generically consistent, there's a Chipotle right down the street. You want to enjoy the quasi-Reuben Savannah sandwich among some neighborhood folks, you patronize this Kensington establishment.

A good "standby" place. A good locally owned and operated establishment with a cozy atmosphere. Service is fine. Sometimes the bar patrons can get a little rowdy depending on what time of night or which day of the week you're there. The Kensington and the Reuben are fantastic. My girlfriend loves their Buffalo Wings. Great place to come to have some coffee or a few beers with a good friend. Overall, a decent place has its bases covered.

Blech! Not impressed. No vegetarian options...the service was OK. Had to order a pizza and it wasn't very good. Kind of gave me a sick feeling later that evening. Total dive for locals, but just sad really. Older couples and barflies.

  • Cassandra B.

I really don't have much to say. I love dives but this is awful. My burger was between bad and mediocre. Don't try the spring rolls - I swear they tasted like plastic. The only good thing about this place is the pleasant wait staff.

  • IH K.

I love the dinginess of this place - it reminds of me of my days in trashy Bremerton, WA where you feel like you just walked into one of your bad 80s memories and you expect to have a big haired woman your mom's age take your order. Except, you are pleasantly surprised that most of the servers are young and the diners are in every age range - with the bar scene being particularly lively with leather jackets of late 30 somethings desperately hanging onto their youthful behaviors and mullet hair cuts mixed in with the crowd of our generation. One recommendation: Don't order anything "fancy" off the menu - no shrimp, no salads. You will be tempted by the buffalo shrimp (disgusting!) I got the feeling that there wasn't' exactly a high turnover with these items. Just order wings, beer or pizza. And boy oh boy will you go back for those wings (and I don't even like to eat chicken off the bone).

***3 1/2*** "Hey, this isn't faux dive...this is a real dive!" I've been saving that Simpsons line for some time, and since Savannahs is the Moe's Tavern of Kensington (without the "tinkle" smell) it seems particularly apt. I went here on Friday at the tail end of happy hour with my friend who just bought a place down the road. The bar has a bunch of 19 inch SDTV's, so its not the place to go if you are looking to catch the game, but we managed to get in 8 short boy drafts (about 10 oz.) for less than 2 bucks a pop, which is quite a deal. I didn't get any food, but as we were leaving someone at the bar ordered some fajitas that smelled amazing, and the restaurant seemed to have pretty good traffic, so I'm inclined to go back and give it a shot. The bar itself had a very local feel to it, mostly some greybeards who stopped by after work to enjoy some cheep beer and a hot bartender (can't say I blame them on either account) and a few cougars looking for prey. Everyone was very friendly though, and no one gave off that real "shade" vibe you sometimes find at dives. It was never so crowded that we had to wait more than 30 seconds for a refill or remind the bartender what we were drinking which is a refreshing change from the Bethesda happy hour scene. On price, service, and clientele I would definitely give the edge to Savannahs over BWB as my favorite local dive, but I usually hit the dives for out of town baseball and football so the TV situation is a real dagger. I'll be back here to try out the menu, and for a few more happy hours I'm sure, but if I'm going out for a game I'll stick with BWB.

I like Savannahs quite a bit. I have been here about 10 times, 9 of each were business lunches, the last of which was happy hour with Craig O. Every visit has been enjoyable. On food Savannah's shining item is their sandwich menu- hearty sandwiches with cheese, and excellent fries. They make a mean reuben, and an excellent french dip. As good as the sandwiches are, they are equally unhealthy. Your gonna get a delicious, large, and yes, greasy sandwich. If that is a dealbreaker for you, then go to Subway or something. While I could not eat here more than once every couple weeks, Savannah's is a Kensington landmark. Come in for a big sandwich and fries if you are there for lunch. The bar scene reminds me a bit of the old Barnabys (a Wheaton dive not short on charm). Savannah's is similar in that you will find a few old salts playing keno, a few cougars looking for prey, and yes a few everyday folk looking to get their drink on after a hard day at the office. I suppose for the time being I fit into number 3, but fit the age of the prey. Savannah's is an unassuming, freindly dive. Unless your some aristocrat with a monocle you will enjoy it.

Mediocre food. Brunch is a joke, but cheap. Service is the worst. The waitress literally walked around with a coffee pot asking everyone if they wanted a refill...except for me! She did this twice. No water refills either. Typical diner food selection, but pretty bland. I figured since it's been there so long, it'd be ok. Wouldn't come back. Ever.

Below average diner food and service. Went on a Sunday afternoon and the place was almost empty but it still took forever to get a server.

Good place to go if you don't want to be seen. Nice bartenders, cheap draft. Food is bearable if you are starving. Decent specials. Key feature outdoor patio where you can light up a Cigar. hard feature to find nowadays so makes this spot worth time for that reason alone.

The woman at the front was very nice and quite friendly, unfortunately our experience went steeply downhill from there. Our server was dour, almost rude. He was uninterested in answering any questions, and did not make eye contact once while speaking with us. He brought the wrong food and then argued with us about it, rather than offering to make it right, as would have happened in almost any other restaurant. An incredibly disappointing experience.

This place isn't bad if your looking for a Mom and Pop joint. The service isn't the best and the food isn't that great. If your looking for cheap food and cheap drinks and some bikers, than this is the place.

How can a good-looking dining establishment have such a reputation for a dreadful service and limited choices?

    (1)
  • Ryan N.

For what looks like a modest hangout with Keno and a large bar area, the food here is overpriced and mediocre at best. The service stunk the whole time we were here, especially since the waiter spent more time outside smoking where tables could clearly see him than serving. I got a wrap and it honestly tasted like they bought it pre-made and heated it up in the microwave. If you are looking to down a few beers at a neighborhood joint, this may be a good place, but I wouldn't waste my time eating dinner here again.

Good parking, nice if noisy bar, fair selection of beers on tap, friendly service, food pretty average, booth seats a bit tight for us fatties, prices like the food, a bit below average.
