Great donuts, pretty good breakfast, terrible coffee. The variety of donuts isn't stellar, but everything they offer is tasty. The sour cream glazed are a favorite in our house. Breakfasts are super simple, eggs and pancakes type affairs served on disposable plates. Lots of the condiments like syrup and sugar and things are in a central spot that gets crowded if several people need to get things. And the coffee is on par with dirty water. Go down the street to Java Nation for coffee.

My daughter and I love this little place! We have breakfast here at least once or twice a month. They have a little hot food side and a bakery. I usually get the egg & scrapple platter (yes, SCRAPPLE), which comes with homefries and toast. Fresh, cheap, and quick. My daughter usually gets one of the yummy apple fritters from the bakery. Good coffee, too. Friendly people and fast service. You can't go wrong here!

Donut King is great for breakfast. They have diner-esque options that are executed very well. Pancakes, bagel sandwiches, omelets, etc. have all been very tasty and made to order. My personal favorite is the fact that they serve Scrapple- a southern breakfast staple that is rare to find around these parts. My husband is a fan of the breakfast potatoes, which you can add to any meal. They also have a large bakery section with a variety of homemade donuts and yummy treats. We have gotten a cake, as well as some cookies and they have been very good. The donuts are tasty as well- my personal favorite is the Boston creme. The only downfall of Donut King- and for me it is a rather big one- is the coffee. It has an acidity that I really don't care for, but it could definitely be personal preference. They offer espresso-based drinks as well and I like those a little more, although I think they are over-priced. Overall- this is a great neighborhood joint to grab a quick breakfast on the weekends or even a weekday.

Great place for good simple breakfasts at a good price. I like the mix of people coming and going and they seem to try to keep the food quality above most delis without going gourmet. You can get local farm eggs for a few extra cents. Donuts are good too and the owners are very nice.

Went in to pre order a dozen muffins for an office breakfast meeting. I asked specifically, and was assured, they would be freshly baked when I picked them up. When at first the lady behind the counter knew nothing of my order at pickup I should have checked what she ended up bringing out all beautifully packed up. Just got to work and unpacked them and these are frozen as hard as bricks! Can not even be eaten. Clearly not freshly baked. Pretty lame. Edit: The papers the muffins came in had the name of another company on them. They purchase prefab frozen muffins here. I sure was handed a line of crap from the girl who told me about "the guy that bakes the muffins" there and how he'd have freshly baked ones for me at pick up.

Enjoyed a tasty breakfast burrito. Saw them skinning potatoes and cooking right in front of me. What more can you want from a diner.

Their donuts are fresh every morning....they have their French curler donuts only in weekends

Went to Donut King in kensington last weekend with my family of five and everyone loved their meal! Service was good, food was great. The only downside was the coffee, you can make a better of cup of the instant stuff at home, but they have a great selection of other drinks. Im not sure how early you need to be there to get the fresh donuts, but they were pretty wiped out at 11. Also, the smell in the place was a bit off. You would think a donut place would smell enchanting, but not here, not horrible...just off. We will definitely be back for a quick bite.

This place is very underwhelming for the breakfast deli side. We ordered a steak quesadilla, egg and spinach on a croissant and banana pancakes. Ok. The banana pancakes were really delicious - fluffy, light and filling! The other items we ordered were small in size, lacking in flavor and way too expensive! I also ordered a variety of donuts to try and those were not too bad. More on the cakey side, but there is a good variety and the price is affordable.

  • Mikki M.

Pretty good food. Nice atmosphere. And they'll customize orders. Not the cheapest breakfast place around but their chocolate chip pancakes are worth it. I'll definitely come back :-)

Owners seem to care only about making $. Plus NO customer service quality.

  • Heather W.

Been here several times and for some reason they are being stingy with the meat on the sandwiches-I got a BLT and it only had 3 pieces of Bacon. For 5.99 for only a sandwich I expect more. Husband got Queens Reuben and it did not have as much Turkey on it as it had before. Don't know if we will come back again.

    (1)
  • Alan M.

The customer service standards are lack luster at best. I have come to eat there several times and they are almost rude at the register. Not even a smile. I will not be going back, EVER!

I've been here twice. The food is just ok, the donut kind of tastes like a Dunkin Donuts donut. The lady that Im pretty sure is the owner is not friendly. She may not speak good English I'm not sure because she says nothing. Both times I went there and asked her a question like where to order she pointed at the other register. The second times I ordered a donut and went on the donut side where she was standing and told her I ordered the donut. She didnt ask me what type she just stood there which I thought was very rude. So I just told her maple. If I'm supporting her business I atleast expect her to part her lips when I ask her a question. I dont think it's a language issue because she got the donut and see pointed me to the other counter. I think she's just rude. I gave it a try 2 times I wont be back a third time.

This place is great. Their breakfast menu (served all day) includes a mean French toast. Lunch has a Reuben made with Turkey - for eating light.

  • Erin T.

The food is ok. Nothing special. They have decent coffee drinks and the pastries are pretty average. What is above average is the pricing. Like $8 for a steak and cheese. Just the steak and cheese..... The breakfast foods seem to be better than the lunch foods. The parking is awful and the staff doesn't speak the best English but were able to muddle through my order. It has been recently (like last week) remodeled nicely. It seems to always be pretty packed so maybe someone knows something I don't about the place?? It does have free wi-fi which is hard to find in that area so I'm guessing that helps keep a steady stream of customers. Really though, just a few doors down is a kabob place with really good food and decent prices. I stop here when I'm in a time crunch and a need for coffee but don't go out of your way to visit-you won't be pleased. Again, nothing special especially when you consider the price.

Their credit/debit machine wasn't working, so I had to go find an atm. Get that crap fixed NOW, that's ridiculous, how do you not have the ability to take credit/debit cards in 2013. ALSO the atm had a fee to use it...so now my donut and coffee is $3 more expensive than priced. The owner needs to step up her customer service game. I don't care if your Asian and you're in the US...you chose this job and this location, learn to speak english. I'd settle for a "hello" but she just stared at us. No "thank you", "hello", "what can I get for you"...nothing. My maple donut was pretty good.

  • Lindsey N.

Donut King has serious small town charm, quality, and affordability. Best things I've tried: maple glazed donuts and an everything bagel with bacon, egg, and cheddar. Love this place to pieces. Go early for your pick of the donuts.

  • Sayeh A.

I don't know why so many people are comparing the donuts here to dunkin, or why there are so many low ratings. The donuts here are fresh, light and delicious. I've had the Bavarian creme, the glazed, and the sugared (can't remember the exact name of that one) and they were all the best I've ever had -- even better than Krispy Kreme, unless you just prefer hot donuts. They aren't so sweet that you immediately need a glass of water afterwards, and they aren't so heavy that you immediately regret eating 4 in one sitting (!!!!).

    (5)
  • Larry H.

Ok, they served me only 4 small thin slices of home fries enough to keep me hungry. The hispanic female that takes the order is rude. I have been there 8 times and it is always the same issue. I think the place has potential and food is a 7 out of a 10. Overall they are not getting my money any more.

    (2)
  • Chad R.

One of the few places that open very early (5:00 am) on a weekday. Skip the breakfast ($4 for two extremely thin pieces of French toast) and just go for the donuts and pastries and their impressive coffee bar. Although there's ample seating inside and out, there's no need to stay b/c they don't greet you with a smile or even a simple, "Good Morning" to their customers. A positive attitude is just as important as a good donut and a cup of Joe.

Great place. Great food, service, and atmosphere. Best keep secret outside of Kensington. Highly recommended!

  • Gabe S.

This is hands down my favorite donut place. Way better than Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme. What I love about these donuts is that they are not overly sweet like Krispy Kreme. If that's what you're looking for, you won't like these donuts. Just a matter of personal preference I guess.

It's hard to mess up cookies. But I think they did.

  • Libby F.

I actually didn't get to eat here because I couldn't get waited on! The lady behind the counter didn't speak English very well and I caught her eye, but she just smiled and went about her business. There was a lady ordering food for her son and his friends ONE ITEM AT A TIME! "OK Ezra, what else do you want? Do you want a ... How about a ... I don't see any elephant ears on display, but let's ask this lady who doesn't speak English if they have any." Lady, if you don't see them in the display case it means they don't make them!!! The donuts LOOKED good. What is up with charging $0.83? I didn't really need a donut anyway... I have dozens of chocolate chip cookies to tide me over.

  • Jason B.

This might not be the best donut place out there, but it's servicable. The donuts, by DC standards, are pretty good and are made right there; they're no Fractured Prune but they're better than the Chevron Dunkin' down the road. That, combined with that they're one of the few free wifi spots in Kensington, are the main reasons to come here. If you go to the place development forgot, maybe do it for this!

    (3)
  • Shawn H.

Donut King is the best place to get a lot more than donuts south of Wheaton and north of Chevy Chase. They also have great coffee. I don't get the bad reviews here. The donuts are really good. So is the coffee. Oh, and they have a breakfast/lunch grill on the other side. You can even get pancakes. And coffee. Seriously though, this is a DO NOT MISS if you're headed through K-Town for any reason. They're quick and really good. They also have free wifi, which is very important to some. Did I mention the coffee?

    (4)
  • Josh B.

Have been here several times. While the good is decent and the price is fair. The customer service standards are lack luster at best. The girl at the register lacks basic customer service skills...not even a good morning. Each time I have come in to eat it is the same al most rude service at the register. Not even a smile. I give the food four stars, but the customer service 2 stars.

  • KM H.

The counter service was quick, but the tuna sub sandwich was disgusting, because it tasted like it had sugar in it. There was a ton of mayonnaise in the tuna mix and maybe it was sweetened, which would explain the sweet taste (ew). The floors were really dirty (needed to be swept and mopped), which made the self-serve dining experience less pleasant. It wasn't a busy cafe, which made the state of the floors seem like disinterest on the staff's part.

  • Perry K.

Came here for breakfast - ordered the egg platter with bacon, toast and home potatoes. The home potatoes are bland; no flavor whatsoever. Save your money and make the breakfast yourself! Environment: clean and cozy.

  • Betty H.

Yummy donuts. I had the Boston cream pie donuts here. It was really good! The taste of the chocolate on the outside and the cream in the inside were spot on. The donut was really soft and fresh too. Best of all, I didn't feel too stuffed or extremely thirty after eating it like I do from some other donuts from other places.

  • Sujit B.

Bagels were soft and super fluffy, but needed some saltiness to them ans the cream cheese wasnt salty enough. The home fries were delicious and I added cheese to them with the extra cheese charge--wasnt a big deal.. food was good enough to come back.. Edited review: from 4 stars to 5.. been here 3 times in 2 weeks.. kinda addicted to the home fries!

  • Brett M.

Don't listen to the other reviewers of this place (typical Ktown whiney folk..). "My coffee cost $3 more because I had to go to the ATM" says one guy... He could have also saved the $3 and taken his ass some place he liked. And what does being Asian have to do with anything, the owner is perfectly coherent and understandable so this is false. I work across the street so I frequent this place enough to give it a review based on the service and product. If you are there in the early AM you will see the kind of people this business has to deal on a daily basis and they deserve a metal or community service award!

My favorite place to go for sweets and grilled food. Fast service, always open & very affordable prices!!!
