Reasonably priced take out food. They make it quickly and have always had it hot by the time I get home. Staff is usually friendly. It is one of the few bars in the area, so that's a plus. It's not an upscale place, but is clean and has a good atmosphere. Lunch is extremely reasonable and you get a lot of food for the cost. Service is prompt and usually attentive.

Nothing special. Just an average Chinese food place. The server was nice and attentive, but couldn't get over the fact that the cook was standing in the door staring at my husband, like "what are you doing here?" We get that a lot in the Kensington neighborhood. Not quite sure why people stare at us like we don't belong in the area...

Quality has changed. Flavor has changed. All for the worst. I considered this place a 4 to 4.5 star rating and lower it to 3-star after last 3-4 visits in last 2-mos. Will try somewhere new.

I love a good sit down Chinese restaurant! It's no PF Changs, but it's definitely several steps above the local takeout-only spots. Everything tastes very fresh and made to order. The egg rolls and fried rice are delish--this is important because a lot of smaller places just don't get them right. The General Tso's chicken is good, too...made with white meat and not soggy and overly breaded at all! Whenever I'm in the mood for goodlocal Chinese food, this is the spot!

I have found my new favorite Chinese restaurant. We started with the fried dumplings which were delicious. My husband and I had the Marinated shrimp and scallops and the Peking duck. Both were great. I especially liked the shrimp and scallops. They were drained and cooked well. It comes on a bed of lettuce and spring onion which was weird at first but food. The only problem with the duck was that the pancakes were a little thin and hard in places. The kids split a fried rice which they liked but to me was not the best. At the end they serve both oranges and fortune cookies. I'll be back.

The orange chicken dinner plate I ordered to go came with lettuce instead of broccoli. This is a first. Every restaurant that served me orange chicken came with broccoli. Regardless, the orange chicken was good, soft, meaty, and with very few of the side fat pieces many chinese restaurants have been getting away with. The rice was ok. I'll go again one of these days as it's near and had bulbous, good meat portions.

This place was good for years and has since lost it. I used to order here at least bi-weekly. Recently, I ordered take-out a few times and asked for the grease to be drained and they didn't drain anything. This ruined my car seat when the fried rice grease seeped through the container and the bag. I gave them a second chance and when I asked, they all of a sudden didn't understand The English Language. I see one other reviewer has similar comments regarding the grease and all of a sudden not understanding The English Language. I brought the item back the last time and the owner opened the small kitchen sliding door, screamed into the kitchen for the cook to drain the grease. No apology; no money back and I didn't notice any less grease. I'm not happy and will not come back. I'll drive to Bethesda to Foong Ling which uses fresh food and is better to customers; although, prices are far higher. I'm also baffled by the four star ratings as the food tastes old and not too fresh. The food in previous years was fresh and tasted good. This once was a good place that I'm sorry to write has lost its luster. My hopes are that the owner will read this, and reviews like it, and adjust.

First visit, moving to the area soon. The food was fine, the service was very nice . I asked the waitress to pick something for me. It was mixed veggies, beef, chicken and shrimp in brown sauce. It could have used a little more zip, but the veggies were crisp and it all tasted good. Not quite up to Shanghai Village, but it was just fine, and the prices seemed reasonable. I will have to try Peking duck, that'll be the true test.

We loved this place. It felt like the wonderful neighborhood Chinese place that we used to go to, which is now gone and we miss it! The atmosphere at China Gourmet is really pleasant. It's casual but clean, comfortable, and homey. The restaurant is completely wheelchair-accessible, which was impressive. The waiters are all really nice and helpful. Now, for the food. Everything was outstanding. We started with egg drop soup and hot and sour soup. Both were tasty and warming. The fried noodles that came with them were fresh and not greasy. Then we got the chicken lettuce wraps. They were delicious - as good or better than the P.F. Chang's version. For entrees we got the homestyle bean curd and the moo shu pork. Both were some of the best we've had. We will definitely be back to China Gourmet!

Kensington legend. Good quality Americanized Chinese food. Nice ambiance and friendly staff. Full restaurant and bar. Private party room. Great selection of the usual items for this type of place. Crispy Beef is better than other places by far. Good prices, ample portions. Good people.

I'm very critical of chinese food, but this place is good. I love the old school atmosphere. Food is always solid and good. Great option for takeout.

Probably the most consistent sit down Chinese food in the area. I've come here for over 10 years and everything I've eaten here has been great. I highly recommend this place.

I made reservation for 7:30 for our group and told them at the time we had to be leaving by 8:45 since 3 of us were ministers eating between two Christmas Eve services. No problem. Arrived on time, chaotic and crowded restaurant. We had to wait 15 mins for our table. Then another 10 mins before the waitress took our order. Then another wait before she returned with the wrong order. Another wait and she returned AGAIN with part of the order wrong. By this time, we'd already figured Plan B: the ministers would eat and run, the rest of us would stay, pack up the leftovers and pay. Just as they were leaving, the final dish arrived. I wish I could comment on the food, we really couldn't enjoy it due to anxiety and irritation. Next time, China Gourmet, consider saying no when people ask if you can do a meal in a timely manner.

Am thoroughly baffled by the 4 star yelp rating for this place. The atmosphere is pretty nice, yes, but the food?? THUMBS DOWN. Ingredients are not fresh, and overall quality of food solidly SUB-PAR. They seem to have given up / gotten to the point of 100% apathy about the quality and taste of their food. No repeat customer made here.

A menu full of all my favorite Chinese dishes, surprisingly nice decor given the strip mall location, and 26 years of neighborhood history! Ordered the Peking Duck, which was as perfectly done as any I've had in a really long time, and a shrimp and scallops marinated in garlic and salt that was surprisingly good. I'm new to the neighborhood, and excited to discover a new regular haunt!

Used to eat there regularly up until recently until food poisoned not just once - twice - along with a friend. First time I thought it was the flu or something else. Second time it was definitely the food. They think you are stupid. If you order something very spicy they will give you semi-rotten meat - thinking you won't know the difference. When called out on the rotten food (Albert) and others will say something like "oh sorry! we gave you kung pao lamb by mistake." Ugghhh. Zero stars and I highly recommend never eating there - or if you do don't order anything spicy.

I always order take out from here and never have been disappointed. Great Food! I've always wanted to dine in as they have a really ambiance inside. A bit pricey from other local Chinese Food places but never have been let down to date.

I have been a long time fan but no more. I've given them several "one more time"s. . When I ordered for carryout today I simply asked to have the grease drained and that in the past the food sat in grease and had continued to cook. The container (the black plastic dish kind with semi-clear plastic cover) was 1/2 full with grease. There was no apology for previous grease pools and not for today's dish. When I asked to have the food drained, suddenly no one spoke English. They told me that they were cooking it again and in less than 1 minute, they presented me with the same dish I handed them. It was not a new dish. They never served food like that when I ate in the restaurant.

I have been eating here for a very long time and have always had the best meals and excellent service. The staff are friendly and the bartenders make awesome drinks. The atmosphere is nice and parking is easy. They have a private room that seats about 10-15. I have a few favorite dishes including the China Gourmet Chicken, Shrimp & Scallops sauteed with salt, scallions and garlic, and I'm a big fan of their dumpling sauce. Thanks for all the good food and service!

Love the service here. I feel horrible because I forgot the name of the lady who served us, but every time we come here we never have any complaints. There is a low turnover rate and they usually remember who you are when you walk in. Plus, you can't beat their shrimp!

This was the first restaurant I visit when we move to kensington with my family. Now that I live in Silver spring with my wife, we still visiting this restaurant. They are very friendly, and food quality is good compare to others chinese places. The staff are very friendly plus they know me for a while. I love the chicken fried rice and lo mein, but I will strongly recomend the kum pao chicken.

I haven't eaten inside the restaurant in ages, but have gotten takeout twice in the past few weeks. Not at all disappointed! I'm not sure what the other reviewers are complaining about. This is normal Chinese food from a restaurant (e.g., not a mall food court). Everything tastes as expected. No suprises (good or bad). I enjoy the vegetarian entrees and my dining companion enjoys the meat dishes. Everything is still hot by the time it arrives home. One complaint: on my last order, I swear some of the mysterious little pieces were meat bits. I picked them out to be safe, but in the future PLEASE use separate pans for the veggie dishes, or you will lose me as a customer.

If you like Americanized Chinese food, this is the place for you. Then you might also think Olive Garden is real Italian food. They have things like beef and broccoli and chop suey, which offends my sensibilities as a Chinese person. If you want good Chinese food in the vicinity, go to Good Fortune or Hollywood East in Silver Spring.

There might be more authentic Chinese restaurants in the area but the staff here is so sweet and the atmosphere is nice. The food is consistent but way expensive, Huh?? Not. Would like to see a little more spice but it's a good place to stop and have a nice lunch or dinner.

I LOVE this place. The atmosphere is wonderful and I have yet to order something on their very extensive menu that wasn't delicious. As an in debt student, the prices are great. Generally, for me and my dining parter, soup as an appetizer and one entree to split in PLENTY of food. This means the bill is only about 17 dollars! That's cheaper than ordering pizza!

I've been searching for good neighborhood restaurants... one I found was China Gourmet. Excellent food and service, lovely interior furnishings. I would gladly take clients here for dinner, as I was taken by a client.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
