August 2015 Food was great! The brisket rocked (some of the best 'chunks' I've had), just on the right side of smokey with taste. Service (getting to me) was a little slow and music was a little loud - hence minus one star. But the brisket! Yum!!

If you live in Maryland, Black Hog will likely wow you. If you're from anywhere south of Maryland, you'll consider it average. Meanwhile, Black Hog BBQ does a fantastic job with presentation. On the other hand, unfortunately, it didn't taste anywhere as good as it looks. Still, it's a solid spot for a good, average, BBQ, which does boast an upbeat atmosphere, affordability and excellent service. The best thing we had was the chopped pork. While you still need the help of one of the sauces to bring solid flavor it's much better than the Arkansas brisket, which was chewy and tough to eat. We ate two nuggets of it and left the rest. The smoked sausage, again average, at best. The sauces are all a good average, too. As for the sides, you'll enjoy the fries and the greens are ok, too. I'm a big fan of sweet potato casserole and loves sweets, but this side was so overly sweet there's likely no sugar left in the back. Still, I think the sides are much better than the BBQ. Black Hog is a great place for people that have never had good BBQ. If you have, however, you won't rave about this place.

Seriously. Best BBQ I've had in MD, and I've searched far and wide. Ribs are amazing. Arkansas beef (burnt ends) are amazing. Pulled pork is amazing. You can tell it's fresh and not some garbage they just pulled out of a microwave. Their sweet potatoes are soooo delicious. Highly recommended! You can also get Dr. Pepper in a glass bottle (real sugar, not the poison that is high fructose corn syrup)! Service is always great. Not a fan of driving all the way up here, especially 270 NB with rush hour, but it's always worth it. Open a place further south in Gaithersburg or germantown!

Absolutely terrific chopped pork! Very authentic taste with a perfect vinegar-based sauce. Also enjoyed their smoked brisket. Very tender and delicious by itself or with their original BBQ sauce. Also ordered their potato salad which was delicious. Great vibe and terrific service. Can't wait to visit again!

Must have their pulled pork and corn bread. We love it. Never had a subpar experience although we always do carry out or use their catering services which was a huge hit at our summer luau thing year. Sweet potatoes are pretty awesome too.

3.5 stars really. The brisket is horrible. Very dry, very bland. You can tell they weren't cut to order. The chicken is surprisingly great and the ribs are flavorful. Chicken and ribs if you go. The lemonade was pretty good too.

This was our first visit - and service was extremely slow - taking well over an hour to get our food. When I complained there was no offer of even giving us free drinks. While the ribs were good - on a combo plate I got 3 small bones - because I understood they were running out of food - and seemed to skimp on the plates. I reached out via email and Facebook before posting this review to see if the management cared - I guess they didn't because no one ever cared to return my inquiry. We will not go back! Since it took so long to serve us - the mac and cheese was cold and gloopy, as was my side of beans. The table next to us - all of their sides were wrong. We were seated within 15 minutes in a busy time - but the table next to use was seated much later - yet we got our food at the same time? No, nope and nyet.

Unbelievable how fast this place has gone downhill. Consistently forgotten take-out orders. Multiple times we have ordered a side of wings and they weren't in the bag when we got home. However, they weren't on the receipt either so I have to assume they ran out, but didn't bother to call and ask if we wanted something else? the tiniest most ridiculous chicken. Seriously, I have no idea how old these chickens must have been before they were butchered, but I'm guessing 4 weeks. In utero. The ribs are fatty and greasy. The wings used to be incredibly good , but now they have an odd taste to them. This place needs to get its shit together and get back to beating my tastebuds ass.

Stopped here for lunch on the way up to Charles Town, WV with a few other people. We sat at the bar and put our orders in. We all ended up getting the BBQ burger! I got mine with pork shoulder, with a side of the Texas beans & rice. The burger was perfectly cooked, pork was awesome and the side order was devoured quickly. Everything was delicious and affordable.

Great food can only be great with better service. This place has both. I had the Carolina pork and Arkansas brisket. Both were awesome but the gem was the collards. They were on point! Wash it down with the sweet tea which was perfect. I'll be back.

If you love barbecue than this is the place to go. I have had some very good brisket in my travels but I do believe this one takes the cakes. So tender and juicy. My wife had the ribs. We both had the macaroni and cheese. All the food was delicious. The bartender was very friendly.

One of the better BBQ places to go to around this area. It's hard to find one that's good in the Gaithersburg/Rockville area (if you know of a place, please do let me know). I went here twice and got pretty much the same thing because it's that good. I got a platter of the dry ribs. It comes with two sides. I usually get the mac & cheese and collard greens. SO GOOD. The sauces they leave at the table are there for you to experiment with. I got the dry so then I can douse the ribs in the sauces I enjoy. The atmosphere and service was alright. Dimly lit place with tables lined against the wall. Staff was there to take our order, the usual deal. This place needs to move closer to the Gaithersburg/Rockville area!

Just moved to the area and wanted to try this place... Unfortunately I don't see anything special about it. For one, the portions are small (or at least, the takeout portions are small. This includes the main dishes of meat as well as the side portions. The jumbo wings are anything but jumbo. Small to medium sized is more appropriate. They did taste rather good, however. I ordered the pit ham plate and my wife the half chicken.. While they tasted ok, the chicken was relatively small and the ham consisted of roughly a few slices of ham. We were still hungry after dinner. And the price wasn't worth it. Famous Daves is a better option.

Stopped here on our way to Arlington/DC. Pulled pork is amazing (best, most vinegary Carolina sauce ever), brisket is good, beer selection is good. Friend had a burger and liked it. Mac and cheese tastes completely homemade and absolutely incredible. Great service, great food! Keep it up, Black Hog!

  • Sarah T.

Okay food was average. But that's not my "beef" today. We went for fathers day. We were told a 20 minute wait for our family of 5. Nbd. BUT the hostess sat at least 6 parties before us that came in after us. We asked her why and she said she didn't want to take an extra chair and put at a 4 seat table for us. When we finally sat, there were flies everywhere. People got tired of waiting for the hostess and would just leave. Our waitress Sarah made the rest of our lunch tolerable. She helped us AND basically assisted everyone else too. She clearly knows how to work. I also didn't like that the bathroom is right next to their beer and food storage, and some office they leave open, and the back door which employees come in an out of. In my wait for the bathroom, I had to dodge employees. It was awkward and seemed to ruin the experience.

  • Jim V.

I really like this place. A couple of times a year I get takeout for my poker group and get raves on the pork. Today we ate in and had the dry ribs and chicken, and both were great. Service was fine even though the place was full. Great spot for lunch.

  • Amanda P.

Stopped here on our way home from DC. Not much there on 68, but glad we found this place. Wanted to try everything on he menu so we got several things and split them - I liked everything I tried. Good portion sizes and fair prices.

  • Kristen H.

Love the choice of all the different sauces here! This place is pretty cozy yet simple. I came here instead of going to the Buffalo Wild Wings that I usually go to next door. I'd have to say this place is better. Maybe not as many options as BWW, but it's worth it. The quality of BBQ is on point, so rich. I would say I wish it were a little hotter when served. The servers are friendly enough and we received prompt assistance with anything we needed.

  • Bill K.

Some of the very best BBQ I've had & I've had a lot from all over the country. Place is coo, smells amazing when you walk in & has a rustic BBQ atmosphere. Sides are tasty and prices reasonable. Will definitely be back! 5 star rating!!!

    (5)
  • Jesse W.

This place is absolutely my favorite barbeque on the planet. Their wings are excellent (I prefer the mustard sauce on them), and the ribs are incredible (order them wet, the sauce is too good.)

    (5)
  • Natalie K.

Love this place, and although the exterior is a suburban strip mall, this location manages to set a solid atmosphere indoors, with a bar as well as a dining section and a takeout counter. This food is really solid and reasonably priced. Service is always prompt and friendly at this location, which has plenty of parking (unlike the downtown location at times). I don't usually order fries when I go for bbq, but I'll echo other reviewers: the fries are delicious at Black Hog. So are the burgers, which again, I don't normally order at a bbq restaurant. But in my mind, Black Hog is my local go-to for burgers and fries as well as bbq these days. As for the bbq, I hail from Texas, so I'm a brisket person. Which is good here, but I think the sausage and the chicken are my favorite, or the Arkansas bbq beef if you are looking for a bbq sandwich. I think they have four different kinds of sauces sitting on the table as well. The greens are tasty and the corn bread hits the mark. I found myself wanting a little bit more from the beans and slaw. Like I said, it's unusual for the fries to be the stand-out side at a bbq joint. I haven't tried the ribs, since their menu puts even a half rack at a higher price point than some of the other items. I'm a mix-and-match plate kind of person, and ordering ribs here seems to be more of a commitment. Maybe someday I'll take the plunge. I haven't had drinks at the bar, but I can vouch for the fresh lemonade! You'll definitely walk out of here smelling like bbq, so leave your nice jackets at home or in the car.

First impression when walking in was it was a little "divey" and very open. It took over a minute before we were greeted, then shown to a table. All the servers appear younger than your average complement of restaurant servers. Table was cleaned before we sat down. Our server was nice although disappeared for long periods. I think they need to improve the service here overall. On the table there are 3 different BBQ sauce bottles to choose from, we enjoyed the Kansas BBQ sauce the best. My meat platter, with 2 meats, a side and cornbread, cost $13.95. Maybe a little pricey although I'm not very clued up on BBQ restaurant prices so won't say it is a negative. The meats I had were the beef brisket and the pork shoulder. They were both very tasty but didn't stay warm for very long. The cornbread and my side of mac n cheese were delicious. My wife had the half chicken (which I had some of as well as it was so much!) with a side of potato salad. The chicken was excellent as was the potato salad. So overall, 4/5 for the food but 2/5 for the service. We will likely visit again in the hope the service improves because the food is definitely worth trying!

Best BBQ in the area by far! This place has great service and unbeatable brisket. Also, the owner of this particular restaurant donates food to the Urbana Food Bank which makes me feel better about spending my money here (nerdy, I know)! :)

    (5)
  • Christopher J.

So I have moved to Urbana, just down the street, since my last review. I will now give 5 stars because the food is succulent and delicious and sometimes I think I can smell barbecue from my house (okay not really). Really good portions, reasonably priced, and even found something that the wife liked, which is no easy task in a BBQ joint. Very pleased with the restaurant.

    (5)
  • Brian K.

Smelled better walking in than the brisket tasted, but better than average overall. Con read and collards were great. Sauces and rubs are a little sweet for my taste, but good!

Honestly, the best BBQ I've had in the area so far. Sh*t is on point. Food: 4.5/5 It's great I finally found my goto BBQ place (sucks it's about 20 min away). I'm sure it can't get close to the BBQ they have in the south but this may be as good as it gets up here. The ribs and sides were fabulous, and I like the beer selection as well. Service: 2/5 Everyone who works here is pretty young and it seems like management is probably just as young. No real friendly greeting, no smiles, no one greeted us upon entering, group hanging out just talking by the kitchen.. Sh*t like that. It was a bit of an initial turn-off but after the food, it was all good. Service seemed to get a little bit better while the meal went on for some reason. Atmosphere: 3.5/5 Nothing bad or great to report. Could have been better cleaned but it is a BBQ place. Overall: 4/5 Would recommend this place to all who are trying to find some good BBQ in the area. I'll be back soon. Additional Notes: Parking was kind of a b*tch. Not sure why but the spots were pretty filled, probably to go to BWW.

Always a good choice for local BBQ! We've never been disappointed. Price is just right for the quality of food and portion you get. Try the burgers too! They're yummy!

Urbana Village Center has a gem of a restaurant called Black Hog BBQ. It's located in a quaint little town-mall type shopping center, about 35 min up 270 from DC. I was in heaven walking through the door as my nostrils encountered the heavenly smell of smoked goods. Brittany descended upon us, seated us, and was super attentive during our visit. Appetizers of gumbo and wings were fantastic. Fresh squeezed, tasty lemonade was brought upon request; and our glasses were constantly replenished. The BBQ pulled pork, wet and dry ribs, and sausage were all smoked to perfection and were amazingly fork tender. I find this a hard feat in most BBQ joints, so Black Hog is to be commended!! Mac and cheese, southern style greens, barquecued beans, and crisp celery were some of the many sides we enjoyed. There really is quite the variety of offerings on the menu. I wanted one of EVERYTHING...lol... Food is presented on simple wax paper and plastic trays, with plastic cutlery. Disco and retro-themed music pipes throughout the well ventilated restaurant. These simple things definitely do not detract from the intense gastronomic experience. Driving back down south to DC, with the smell of smoky BBQ on my clothes, I could only think of one simple thought: when will I return to the Black Hog? May have to be tomorrow!!!

Favorite place for BBQ. The chicken melts in your mouth and the sauces are delicious. The North Carolina one is my favorite. I'm always willing to make the trip to the area when i have that summer time bbq craving.

This location closes at 10 on Saturdays. I roll up at 9:53pm. Yes I know the last person when everyone wants to go home. However all the chairs were already up. This tells me they started putting up chairs at or before 9:30. The door is unlocked. Not a soul can be seen. I walk to the Togo/ Pick up station and I see a nice lady scrubbing the counters. I tried to get an order of wings. All out. By the look of how clean the kitchen and production table were. The were "out" of everything. Just close at 9:30 or lock your doors when you have no intention of serving a customer. The food is good. However when I call ahead at times I always hear what they are out of. Frustrating.

  • Kathy R.

Usually a big fan of Black Hog but bad experience last night. Out of MANY things including the ribs I drove 30 minutes to get. Staff were frazzled and sometimes rude ...clearly overwhelmed on a busy Saturday night. How could you be short staffed on the busiest night of the week AND run out of food???? The mothership needs to give this place some attention.

Great place with good BBQ, a nice bar, and friendly service. Excellent presentation of carefully prepared meats. I had the BHB Triple platter (ribs & 2 meat) which was a little expensive at $19.49 with one side. It was good though! My favorite meat was the Carolina Chopped BBQ which was very flavorful. Love it! I also had the brisket, which was good (but not as good as the pork) and the dry ribs. The dry ribs were smoky and tender, but a little bland...I think they just lacked salt. The meat was well attached but came off the bone easily. Cooked perfect and topped with a sweet dry rub. There were not a lot of sides offered, but I had the greens and they were awesome! Hot and flavorful. The sauces were all good. I missed having a HOT BBQ sauce (although their original has a kick to it). I'll definitely come back to try other things as it's some of the best BBQ in our area. Branded '72 also serves up a nice plate (better sides) but their meat quality has been variable lately. The only reason it is 4 stars instead of 5 is the price. The plates were a bit expensive and for almost $20 for my plate it should have been more food than i could eat. The side was kind of small also. I'd say keep the same prices and increase the meat quantity, or drop it by a buck. However, the sandwich and wing prices seemed very fair.

Had the Memphis dry rub and Kansas city wet ribs, delish! Real smoked ribs! Fresh cut fries, cornbread and potato salad was great too.

Hands down best wings in town... Not to mention the flavor is unreal and original, they are also the best size in town as well! Great service every time I'm here!

Prices have increased since my last visit, but the food is still delicious and generally a good deal. I tried the chicken for the first time, and it was great. Their french fries are still completely awesome!

Having lived in Atlanta for a few years, I've come to really appreciate good BBQ. And this place has it! Brought my boyfriend here while we were home visiting my parents. I tried the bbq pulled pork, and he got the ribs. Each of us got cornbread and mac.I cheeses. We both enjoyed our meals, friendly atmosphere, and decent service. Knocked off a star because the corn bread came out cold- not a deal breaker for me. Decent price for a solid meal that filled us both up. Would much rather come here for food than the buffalo wild wings next door.

This is an incomplete review, since I personally didn't pick out the food--I tried a bite of my friend's pulled pork sammich. We both noticed Black Hog's sign as we were getting ready to pull off the highway, dreamily saying 'Black Hog Barbeque' perfectly in sync like sitcom characters. If you've eaten at a moderately-decent Ft. Worth barbeque, the interior will feel familiar: It reminded me of one of the places we ate at right next to the Cowboy Museum and the cattle drive. It smelled SO GOOD in there. The pork was juicy, the bread was good and they gave you a really generous helping of meat! I thought the pork would be just a tad tastier, but I want to give this place another try.

My husband and I get carry out from here on Wednesday's when it is 2 Brisket/Arkansas Beef sandwiches for $15. It's a great deal. I love their potato salad and my husband loves their french fries and macaroni and cheese. Corn bread is good, wings were OK but that might be because we got them to go and they were soggy when we got home to eat them. Food is always delicious and quick. I have also ordered food to go to serve a larger crowd with their pounds of meat and large sides and it is always a hit!

The food was great. The wet bbq ribs were fantastic. The flavor was delicious. The baked beans and greens were good as well. I would definitely come back. Service was great too.

The service is hit or miss but definitely better than in downtown frederick. Can't knock the food though. The chicken. Ribs and pork are stellar

  • S. Paul L.

Really really good BBQ. I have to say, the ribs were outstanding. It wasn't particularly inexpensive, but the portion sizes were solid. The wet ribs are definitely a must for anyone going there. The chicken, brisket, and pulled pork is really good as well.

I really like this place I drive 30 mins to get here but I gotta admit food is amazing is really good if you like BBQ , ITS WORTH THE DRIVE...if you come here you gotta try the ribs and wings....

Sunday evening holiday weekend didn't feel like cooking. We heard about this restaurant from friends. decided to try it strip mall casual dining. Only negative bar prices high 6.00 for a bottle beer. But the BBQ was great. Brisket, smoked sausage, chopped Carolina and southern greens outstanding. Would have been a five star except for bar price of alcohol will be back again

Ate here after "hiking" sugarloaf mountain (we accidentally drove up most of the way). The food was delicious! And the service was amazing. We had a great waiter - I wish I could remember his name - he was so helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. The ribs were incredible - both dry and wet were delicious. They also have Cheerwine, which made my husband pretty happy. We will definitely be going again if we're ever in the neighborhood.

This is my first Yelp review, and I created the account in part to give credit to my favorite BBQ place, Black Hog. I eat here about twice a month and I have had a great experience every time. The service is quick, the food is outstanding, and the location is very convenient for me. Further kudos for their catering. I had about 15 guys over for the first weekend of football a few months ago and I picked up several pans of various meats and sides. Everyone raved about it, it really helped for a memorable and fun weekend. Keep up the great work, I'll be back again soon.

  • Michael F.

Very good. They could charge extra to sit near the smoker it smells so good. I loved how the pulled pork had just a slight bit of crunch on the outside and was meaty in the middle. It was smokey and spicy, with the sauce on the side. The beef brisket is tender, flavorful and moist. Truly excellent barbecue. The bartender remembers me from week to week when I come in for my Saturday lunch.

We ordered take-out for 110 people for our wedding last weekend from here. From the first day I called in February to the confirmation call I made two days before to the pick-up on Saturday to the AMAZING dinner that evening, it was a breeze working with the staff. Oh, and Black Hog tastes just as amazing 2 hours after you pick it up as it does in house. So happy we went with Black Hog as were our 130 guests!

I like the idea of BBQ meal and choices of sides for less carb eating. I tried Carolina chopped pork, BBQ pulled pork shoulder and sausage. They were delicious, not salty, not burnt. I also love the side, Southern Style Green, reminds me of a Chinese veggies stew.

After waiting 15 min for a table we were told that they had run out of ribs. I figured no big deal, this place looks like they make some good bbq, and I can live without ribs. After another 10 min of waiting I was told that they had now run out of brisket. We were told that the owner had decided to cut back on the amount of food they cook and had cut back a little too much. Now disappointment was starting to set in. My family and I decided we had been waiting long enough that we would stick it out and try whatever they didn't run out of. The server we got was a really nice guy who was nothing but helpful. Because they were out of ribs and brisket many of the items/platters on the menus were unavailable or lacked variety. My mom asked the waiter if she could substitute chicken for one of the missing meats because they were out of so many items. The waiter went to ask the owner if he would do that for us and he told us the owner would not let us substitute chicken in for one of the meats they were out of without paying extra! How insane is that! What kind of business are you running that you will not substitute something in place of items that you ran out of, because you decided to cut back on how much food you cook on a Saturday night at 6:30pm. At this point I was willing to walk away and not give this place my business. My parents insisted we stay because the food is good, and the food was good, it was cold, but it was still good. That is about all I can say about the food. I eat a lot of bbq and this place is good, but nothing separates it from other bbq joints in the area. The sides were a bit disappointing. The coleslaw was watery and bland, and the mac and cheese was lacking flavor too. The cornbread was nice though, and offered some salvation for the rest of the sides. Honestly the best thing about this place was the waiting service. The guy we had was awesome. He even felt bad enough about the situation to give us extra sides when he could. If I was rating just the staff minus the owner, I would give this place a 5. I started to feel better when I saw dozens of people laugh and walk out when they heard they didn't have ribs or brisket. I hope the extra $2 we had to pay to substitute chicken into my moms meal makes up for all the business the owner lost that night. Would I go back? This place is more of a once a year type of place for me. Breakdown: Food: 3.5 Staff: 5 Owner: 1 Average: 3.16 I rounded down.

She said..."YUM!!! This place has got the best BBQ in MD, hands down. I am only giving 4 stars because my husband and I are big BBQ lovers and he is from the South, so we've had southern BBQ many times. Nothing compares to BBQ from the South, however, this is probably the closest you will get to in MD. Really good pulled pork, brisket, mac and cheese and all the other sides are good as well. We have driven the 40 minute drive to this place many times just to cure our BBQ crave." He said..."I mean you are still in MD so this isn't the BBQ capital of the world, but they found something special at Black Hog. The beef brisket is cooked good and tastes amazing, they also have an array of sauces. If they stuck with one kind of BBQ they would definitely get 5 stars one day. Yea 40 minutes drive sucks but I don't expect to get good BBQ anywhere near DC, if Black Hog was in DC they would be out of business...damn yuppies."

  • Chuck B.

At Black Hog, I'd definitely recommend the Luke's Burger with cheese (topped with pork or brisket) with the hand cut fries...a great lunchtime meal. The ribs are okay, but a little more fatty than I like, but the chicken and pulled pork are terrific. While the food definitely tastes good, I do think the portion sizes of all the meats and sides are relatively small (except the chicken). You can spend the same money at Chubby's or CarterCue and feel like you got more for your money, but those places are destination restaurants you have to drive to, whereas Black Hog is very convenient to Urbana shopping or Frederick downtowners.

Not only does Black Hog have the best ribs I ever had, but I've always had such great experience with their service. Great service and give it my highest recommendation for BBQ food.

Excellent food and service. Highly recommend the brisket or the Arkansas beef paired with the pulled pork. Yum! Southern greens were delicious as well.

Burgers are always good; beef is from a local farm I believe. The fries were a greasy mess...not hard for a cook to taste one and see they are off. Laziness or fatigue later in the evening? Used to be good as well.

Bbq was decent. Staff unorganized. This place is sloppily run. Everyone was friendly enough but clean up was slow and unorganized. The owner of this chain should seriously invest in management training. It just seemed so amateurish. Garbage out...staff unprofessional with each other. This place could be so much better than it is. Ehhhh...disappointed.

My favorite southern style bbq. I live in Rockville and drive here just for the pork shoulder with greens and Mac and cheese. They have several different platter options so you can try a little of everything. The wings are also a great starter, If your really hungry you can get you can get some wet or dry ribs. It's worth stopping al by black Hog if you want some quality food and service.

Had the 2-meat platter (brisket and sausage) and 1/4 rack ribs. Food was flavorful and plenty to eat for a fair price. Didn't need extra sauce, but the barbecue sauces on the table are so tasty (even the mustard is good!) that I kept looking for excuses to use more sauce. Service was excellent - water and soda refilled repeatedly and with a smile from our wait staff. I recommend. Superior to BBQ places in the Rockville area I've been to before. Worth the drive from Rockville .

Horrible! We ordered take-out for my husband's birthday 3-23-14. We got a slab of dry-rub ribs which were HORRIBLE. Dried out, shriveled up, tiny, hard, miserable little things that had too much concentrated salt and spice on it. And for the price!! Holy crap! WAY too expensive for what it was. I couldn't believe it. Terrible. The only thing that saved the meal was the pulled pork and cornbread. The potato salad wasn't bad either, although you could taste the sugar they added to it, which is probably why it "tasted so good". But seriously, for the price, we would've been able to feed our whole party twice over with a tenth of the cost with just a simple pork butt roast thrown in the crockpot. Not going here again anytime soon. I'm shocked at the 4 star rating, quite frankly.

There's at least one bar tender, who seems to be working only on the hourly rate.

A group of us went to eat at this place last month. Three of my friends were highly talking about Black Hog for a while so I decided to go with them. I love meat and especially BBQ. The day we were going I did my research by going to the restaurant's website to look at their menu. I decided to go with the two meat plate. When our food came to us I was a little disappointed at the serving portions. I had the beef brisket and BBQ pork shoulder with a side of potato salad. The portions were so small about half the size of my palm. The BBQ was not all that great. I was not impressed. Thankfully the restaurant is a quite a drive away from where I live so I will not be returning to dine there.

I say 2.5 stars. This place was kind of underwhelming for me. What a bummer. :( My husband and I went here for lunch a couple of weeks ago. I went for the BBQ Pork Shoulder sandwich with mac & cheese. The sandwich was fine, but nothing special. The mac & cheese was a disaster, though! The cheese sauce broke and when they brought it out in the little cup it was lumpy and greasy. I tried it anyway hoping it wasn't as bad as it looked. Alas, it was. It had some great potential, too! If only someone in their kitchen knew how to make a cheese sauce. Or knew what a cheese sauce was supposed to look like. (Hint: There aren't supposed to be lumps and there definitely aren't supposed to be pockets of grease throughout the pile of macaroni) Anyway. My husband picked out the Smoked Beef Brisket sandwich with fries and the sandwich came out as big slabs of brisket piled on a bun. I understand that brisket is sliced and it makes sense to serve it that way on a plate, but on a sandwich? He had to pull the brisket off his bun and cut them up so that he could pile them back on his bun and be able to eat the sandwich as a sandwich. (The bun, by the way, did not pull through unscathed. It was quite squashed under the weight of the brisket.) He also said that he didn't think the taste was anything special. The BBQ sauces are pretty tasty, not the best I have had, but still good. And I got a tasty beer! Not a total loss, but not worth the drive from Germantown to go again.

Was in for carry out on a weekend night. They were out of brisket but we ordered Carolina pulled pork and some sides. Beans are not good but the Carolina Pork was very good on potato buns. Would go back and try brisket. The staff was good and BBQ sauces were very good. The sides need some improvement but the place is Black Hog BBQ not Black Hog Beans and coleslaw so I guess the name says it all.

They serve tasty barbecue at Black Hog. I almost always get the Carolina pulled pork, though I switch between Lexington style (tomato based slaw) and Eastern (not tomato based). Both sandwiches are quite tasty and need little more than the slaw, though there are several sauces at the table. Only downside is that they charge extra for fries as a side, and the fries are tasty enough that you want pay the extra. The other sides aren't as awesome, though the southern style greens aren't bad. The serving size for the fries is quite generous. You can also get Cheerwine, for those of you part of that particular cult.

I like this place, it's clean and they have good down home BBQ. I like the brisket, very tender and juicy. They also have good North Carolina chopped BBQ. One short note, their coleslaw is not as sweet or as creamy as I like mine but its good. They also have some good house BBQ sauces. Thumbs up for me on this venue.

Black Hog now has an Urbana location that is on the small side but still has some great bbq. Lots of meat and sides to choose from but the beef brisket and Carolina pulled pork are my favorites. Dining room fills up quickly but there are plenty of seats at the bar. Only a couple beers on tap but they have a great selection of bottled beer.

Came here with a couple buddy's of mine before a softball game. We asked the waiter what he recommended and he said the "Arkansas." We all ended up getting the two meat platter, one of the meats being the Arkansas. I haven't stopped thinking about it since. I understand most people who reviewed the place took the atmosphere into consideration more than the food. Yes, it can be a bit loud but the food is louder in my opinion. A must stop if you're in the area.

Incredibly friendly, on-the-ball service. Loved the chopped pork sandwich. The fries are irresistible. Definitely the best BBQ I've had in Maryland.

My family took my father here for fathers day because he wanted some bbq. Upon arriving into Black Hog, we saw that it was basically a fast food bbq joint. For our meals, we had the one meat platter, chicken plate, three meat platter and half slab platter. All the meals tasted pretty good, but the portions for the three meat platter should have been more. The food came out quickly but it seemed like it was already prepared. Food came out on plastic platters. The service was very good and it was fairly crowded. Overall, the best thing about the meal was the sides of mac and cheese. The prices were a little high for a sit down fast food bbq joint. I wouldn't go back again because there's other bbq places around Frederick to try.

I really wanted to like this place - it's close to me and I love me some BBQ. But, well, it wasn't so good. I had ribs, my sweetie had pulled pork. It was meh. The fries were double-meh. We'll probably try again just 'cuz I've seen other folks say good things, but frankly, it was disappointing. Oh - and they're not open on Sunday, so plan accordingly.

other than getting a bit lost finding it thanks to incorrect directions on google we were thrilled with our meals at Black Hog. I can't even tell you my favorite item; I love their combo meat platter so I can try a variety. My husband got the dry rub ribs and they were AMAZING too. I love this place and go out of my way to get there...I'm in Bethesda and was driving to Frederick and am thrilled they have a new location in Urbana. Keep up the great food.

This is by far the worse of the two Black Hog BBQ locations. The downtown Frederick location was far friendlier and fresher with its food. My wife and I went in and first discovered how noisy the restaurant was with the chairs constantly scraping the floor. The noise was constant during our dining. Would recommend putting foam felt pads on chairs to cut down on noise. Our server was very curt with us and not very friendly. He took our drink order quickly, which was appreciated, but otherwise, did not show any interest in us as customers. Finally, the brisket came out very fatty and not very tender at all. I would highly recommend the downtown Frederick location over this one for friendly service and fresher food. And we are not old farts and one to complain just to complain, but expect better service -- especially when Urban BBQ has treated us well. The mac and cheese, however, was outstanding.

I come from Ky to visit grandchildren. My mother is from WNC- 'bout 40 miles north of Asheville. I've lived all over the south and have tried many different bbq places. In response to the last review; you don't want to trim too much fat. Fat adds flavor and moisture to the meat- which makes it succulent. Mebbe that's what the kitchen is going for. I had heard about the Black Hog from my children. I decided to try the Urbana location when we found out "The Cracked Claw" had been closed. I know- a big jump from shellfish to land meat. Lol. I just wanted something to "wow" me. Well...I got my wish. This BBQ is AS GOOD AS ANY I'VE TASTED IN THE CAROLINAS AND GEORGIA! THE SAUCES ARE TO DIE FOR! PULLED PORK WAS PHENOMENAL! Ribs looked good too, have to try them when I go back. Service was friendly. Nice boutique beer selection. Clean. Manager was SUPER NICE! Made sure we were being well taken care of- which we had NO complaints! Ok, maybe one- sides are a little small. Especially to be as good as they are. Nice surprise to find THIS caliber BBQ this far north! All I can say is...WOW!

Solid ribs, dry or wet. Great pulled pork. I'm trying to give up meat for a month and this place makes it that much harder. They have great sides like the slaw and potatoes too, albeit kind of small portions. The service is very friendly and helpful. The first time we came here, we grilled the guy at the cashier like we didn't know what a rack of ribs looked like. He patiently went through everything and told us about the specials. I'll be back... in a month or so. Depending on how things go. Overall, best bbq place in this area I've had.

I had a party catered by them for 35 people. I asked that they divide up the food into two containers so I could have two lines for buffet serving. They did exactly as I had asked. Everyone loved the food. The only thing I would do differently is order extra potato salad. Everyone loved it and it all went. The food helped to make the day a success.

Let me start by saying that I am a HUGE fan of Black Hog. I drive from Rockville to Frederick on a regular basis just to eat at this place..30 miles each way. They have the best bbq in the area, so I was thankful when they opened a location in Urbana, because it is a little closer than driving to Frederick. Everything is really good with the exception of the pulled pork. I have eatten at the Urbana store 4 times and each time the pulled pork has been VERY FATTY!! The baked beans, cole slaw, cornbread, and wings have all been good. I just don't understand why the cook cant take a little extra time to trim the fat away from the pork before cooking it. I never had this problem in the Frederick location. You have to have consistency guys come on. I hope that you read this and make some adjustments, so I can rate you higher on my next visit. For now I will drive a little longer to your other location.
