Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Rave review in Washingtonian led me to this local restaurant. They loved the mole and I have to agree - unique and delicious flavor. Tiny chicken leg and thigh though. Rice was great, beans ok. Corn tortillas piping hot and fresh made though it's not a favorite of mine. Clean place with quite fast service and friendly staff But keep your eyes open, this a neighborhood with high crime

Delicious and legitimate Mexican food (not Salvadoran-Mexican or Tex-Mex). Friendly and fast service.

Nice, tasty visit; my second. Many Hispanic customers, but wait staff is quite bilingual. Today I had Chile rellenos platter. Awesome. Cheese and beef stuffed Chile, in sauce. Tasty flavored rice. Warm corn tortillas, bowl of frijoles. Three fresh salsas. Lots of bottled drinks, but also horchata, cantelope , and another fresh fruit drink.

I'm originally from San Diego and finding good Mexican food here in Maryland is a challenge. I usually divide Mexican restaurants in the U.S. into two categories: larger, chain restaurants that will serve chips & salsa, quacamole, sour cream, & margaritas. The second category is smaller, more traditional places that have none of the above ingredients and where you'll generally find the truly latin folks going for their daily meals. Although there are good establishments in both categories, the second category is the type I truly enjoy as I grew up on this type of food in San Diego. Taqueria El Mexicano's flavors are exactly the same as the food I miss in California and definitely falls into the second category, so if you prefer chips & salsa and margaritas this is not the place for you. So far I've tried the tamales (all of their flavors), guarache, tacos, eggs & jamon, mole poblano, plus the chile relleno special they had on sale one day. All of these are delicious and remarkably true to the flavors of Mexico. As other reviewers have mentioned, their tortillas are freshly made and do not come from a factory - big bonus point as far as I'm concerned. The salsas they bring to the table are also delicious and come packing heat. The tomatillo salsa is so good I even use it on the tamales - it's definitely my favorite though you can't go wrong the tomato/cilantro and green salsa as well. I've enjoyed every meal I've had there and highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys more traditional Mexican food. The staff is friendly as well and always attentive.

I was on my lunch break and still searching for the best Chile Relleno's in Md so I decided to stop here. It's a small mom and pop type of place with no frills. My Chile Relleno's were ok but nothing to call home about. I was extremely disappointed that there was a drunk man walking from table to table and no one said anything. He came and sat down at my table and started talking. I felt really uncomfortable so I immediately ate and left. I won't be back again!

I really enjoyed my meal here, but it didn't get off to a great start. First, they said they "couldn't do" bean tacos. Really? REALLY? Who ever heard of such a thing, of course you can. You simply put beans in the tortilla instead of meat, but ok, some places don't like to alter their offerings... So I said fine, then tell me what I can order? Started out with the "sope." Basically a fresh tortilla topped with beans, lettuce, cheese, sour cream. It was very good, particularly when you top it with one of FOUR salsas they bring to the table. Then I moved onto the chile relleno which very good as well. I mean who knew a pepper and some cheese could result in something magical, but they do. It also came with rice, beans, and another grilled, but not stuffed pepper. That little guy had some kick to him that I had not anticipated. Prices were reasonable, and the crowd was pretty quiet. The TV was playing Mexican classics. I had a professor who told me Mexicans loovveee their classics. The way these 20-somethings eyes were glued to the screen, I could see that. Now, they probably weren't Mexican, but that cinema was shown throughout Central America as well. I will return.

I'm an L.A. girl in D.C. and have been lost without real tacos until I found this place. If the taco shop is next to a tire discount place, you know it's gonna be good. This place delivers real Mexican food, with excellent guaraches, tacos, quesadillas, posole and yummy guava drinks in cute glass bottles. Carnitas, chorizo, Al Pastor, they got it all. Salsas at the table are the real deal -- fresh and spicy. Great place to take kids as they can have quesadillas while you eat spicy. The only drawback is no liquor license. If they served margaritas, I would be here every week. Bakery next door is pretty good, too.

The barbacoa taco was soooo gamey that i only took a couple bites and ended up throwing it away. The chorizo taco was decent though. Overall, it was not satisfying (taste-wise).

I never understand reviewers who say that they liked a place and then give it 3 stars. To start, this is not some b.s. "Mexican" place where they give you chips and salsa on arrival and some kid in a bandanna offers you margaritas. Nor is it "authentic" aka overpriced the way Samantha's is. Seriously that place is like $20 a plate plus tip and you might as well got to Chevy's. Anyway, this place is great real Mexican food. We had their alambres and it was simply fantastic. And it came with homemade tortillas! They also serve three salsas and pickled radishes on the side which are fantastic. One of them is really hot. Not the kid at Chipotle told you it's hot but real heat, which means to my mind that it was real good. We also got their flautas which were tasty. The sides of beans and rice were great too. The drinks were great too. Mexican coke (real sugar no high fructose corn syrup) and tamarind water. My wife loves tamarindo everything but I'm not really a fan but even I liked their tamarind water. Also, the staff is simply lovely and even answered a few questions.

A nice little joint. Food is good, fresh, and affordable. I've been a couple of times and had good service and good food both times. The posole is excellent, as are the chorizo and el pastor tacos.

This was my second visit. My mom and I came here the first time after her doctors appointment and decided to make it a thing. We had been looking for great Mexican food since we moved from San Diego in 2008 and this place was promising on the first visit. We ordered al pastor taco platter with rice and beans. Red and green chicken tamales. Red enchiladas. Pupusas. Sopes. Tamarindo juice and a sprite! The food was delicious. Very few complaints on that visit. I didn't like how a family behind us was served first and they ordered just as much or more food. Food wise, I wasn't a fan of the pupusas (and I love pupusas). The sope was delicious but it was different than I'm used to. I was hoping for the pinched sides on the sope shell but it was flatbread (still yummy). The rice wasn't the red rice I'm used to. This rice was orange and may have been seasoned with saffron instead of tomatoes (still yummy). The second visit another family behind us was served first again (and I was soooo hungry). We ordered red and green tamales, flautas, al pastor platter with rice and beans, coke and jamaica. We also ordered five tamales to go; two pork, three chicken. The flautas were not what I expected although very yummy. When I usually get flautas it's large rolled FLOUR tortillas stuffed with meat as opposed to CORN tortillas. I like both corn and flour but wasn't expecting to get corn (I prefer corn but had a taste for flour that day). The tamales we ordered to go were very different from what we were served. The chicken tamales were wrapped in banana leaves (which I have never liked because I like the lines on the masa from the corn husk shells) and on top of that when he ate in the restaurant the chicken tamales were wrapped in corn husk so it was strange we would get banana wrapped to go. Once home my brother sat to eat one of the chicken tamales. It looked like mush just thrown together in a banana leaf. Once he opened it up he found a chicken bone inside (it was terrible). I would have gave a hour but the tamales to go were sooo terrible. I'm on the fence about going back here but my mom wants to try again.

Fantastic. The real deal and by far the best Mexican food since we moved here from CA. The mole is to die for, the Posole is delicious, and the Chile Relleno is also amazing.. That is all we have had so far.. I love it!!! The tortillas are the most tender and corny goodness ever. I have had fresh made from many many places and these are the best ones even better than the Famous Nixtamal in Queens. Of course I Am only comparing to what I have had in this country..

After being a fan for two years, I was knocked out on Fat Tuesday by the beef soup (sopa ) that was rich, meat a toothless person would have no problem with, non greasy, and not overly laden with chilies. It was perfect. They offer freshly juiced carrot juice and orange juice. This place is a find ! Not a franchise ! Family run service always helpful and friendly. Families come here to eat, couples, Univ of Md people, and the guy off work.

5 stars for making mole poblano correctly. Enough said. As if mole is hard enough to find many places try to be cheep and water it down. Last night I got hooked up with 3 fat pieces of chicken and enough mole sauce to sop up with about 4 tortillas. Absolutely delicious. I have a really really hard time eating anything else but I have tried many other things. Hurache- excellent. Tacos- awesome (seems like the tortillas are hand made and not from a bag like what you get at most taco trucks.) Pechuga- succullent and great. Carne asada- on point. Bistec- worth every penny. Man I know I'm forgetting a few items I've tried but those are what is standing out in my mind as of now. Respect to the owners and workers of this restaurant. I haven't talked to them terribly much over the years but I believe it is family ran. They are always friendly and have provided me with food that has been enjoyed by my family and friends for years. They always have the T.V on univision (popular Spanish tv network) to keep something rolling. Typically I stop by after work and primer impacto is keeping everyone occupied as they eat from 5 to 6. If you are in the area please try this place out. It's behind the 7 eleven Exxon station on the opposite corner from tick tock liquor store. P.S try the bread from la panadaria 2 doors down its great too.

Four stars. The star off is for the *very* small servings of meats in the non-taco dishes that we tried (pork posole, chicken mole). The meat portions in these dishes are miserly, stingy, mean-- pick your own adjective. Specifically: -The pork posole ($11.50) had a few pieces of pork in it-- enough to be identifiable, but not enough to make an outstanding posole. -The chicken mole ($11.95) had 1 reasonably good sized chicken leg, but the "second" piece of meat was *virtually all bone.* Tacos and tamales are thus better buys here-- at $2.75 each, they offer more meat for your money. So why the 4 stars? Notwithstanding the paucity of meats, the food is delicious and served with a dazzling array of condiments. The pork posole was a gigantic bowl of spicy red soup (all posole here is red) that can be doctored to your taste with lime, radish pieces, chopped lettuce, onion and (if you request it) chopped cilantro and green pepper. You can also add one or more of the 3 complimentary salsas to the soup: a mildly spicy red, hot green or a chopped tomato and onion. The end result is delicious. (We made ample use of lime and cilantro, with lashings of green salsa, onions and radish. The radish pieces are reminiscent of potato cubes when dunked in the hot soup.) The chicken mole, accompanied by yellow rice and pinto beans, boasts a superb mole sauce. The sauce is thick and multi-dimensional, combining chocolate notes with smokiness and an anise undertone. Easily the best mole sauce we've ever tasted. Get a side order of corn tortillas-- excellent eating in their own right-- to sop up any extra mole sauce. We recommend the tacos: we tried carnitas (good) and lengua (excellent). Both are wrapped in supple corn tortillas. If you wish, combine them with the complimentary salsas and condiments. A delicious bargain at $2.75 each. Tamales are also available, including one with a chicken mole filling-- probably a bigger bang for your buck than the chicken mole entree. This is a small, simple place. You order at the counter to carry out or eat in. If you elect to eat in, your order will be brought to your table. No alcohol is available, but a broad array of soft drinks are on offer.

I only found out about the gem that is Taqueria El Mexicano in Hyattsville, Maryland after talking a walk with my husband one autumn day. During my recent trip to Taqueria El Mexicano, I was courteously greeted by a twenty something cashier that patiently answered some questions I had about some of their menu items. There are posted photos of much of the food items to help in selecting the food. I had scrumptious and zesty servings of three carne asada tacos with delicious orangish red sauce and delectable tomatillio and tomato and cilantro blend sauces. The cashier was both kind and helpful and made my husband and I feel welcome to return to eat here in the future.

Very decent and affordable Mexican/Salvadorian food. I tried the pork tacos and a cheese pupusa. The pork tacos were street cart style (soft tortillas with onions, cilantro, and lime) and were very good. The hot salsa they provided was ok. The cheese pupusa was very tasty. They also have bottled Mexican Coke, which has real sugar instead of the high fructose corn syrup that US Coke has. Also, the dude at the register spoke English well, which is very uncommon in these types of places. I'd definitely hit this spot up for tacos and/or pupusas again. Yum.
