I love this place! I have tried mostly everything on the menu and everything is so fulfilling! But my usual and favorite dishes are the mojaras, coctel de camaron, huaraches and with a Michelada on the side. This is one of two places (that I have found)where you can find the most authentic Mexican food in the DMV. AND the prices are more than reasonable. I would only suggest that they train their waitresses better because after given your food, they rarely come back to check on you.

Sometimes you need to go out of your way to discover a hidden gem. This area is abundant with Mexican, Salvadorian and taquerias places. My friend discovered this place thanks to The Washingtonian's 'Cheap Eats" edition. Cheap it is, but authentically delicious too. I am a creature of habit, so a cheese quesadilla did it for me. $3.50 for a small, but filling Mexican cheese meal is two thumbs up in my book. It doesn't come with anything for that price, but a decent-sized side of guacamole is only $3.50. Add that and some of the complimentary salsa and you've got the perfect, spicy blend of perfection. My friend cleaned his plate like a good boy. He had a platter of chicken enchiladas in a mole sauce with rice and beans. It was quite filling for only $9.00. The chips and salsa were good, but I like my chips thinner and saltier. I can't complain about free food though. Try their horchata; almond milk flavored with cinnamon ($1.50). It is refreshing and completes the meal. If the locals flock to this place (I think we were the only ones speaking English on our visit.), then you know it must be good.

Yes siree Bob! this food is authentic. I was craving some tamales, which is rare, and the Mexican Food God answered my prayers. I got chicken tamales in green sauce and they were delicious. So delicious that I came back the next day and got 5 more- for lunch... for the week. LOL! My sister got a carne asada and a chicken taco. She said the beef was a little salty but that it was good. My mom got a shrimp dinner- I had some of her rice and beans and they were delicious. I will definitely be back!!!

Don't try the chicken quesadilla. Its made of corn and deep fried. The beef tacos are delicious. Atmosphere isn't very upscale. Everything you can expect from a small local restaurant. Price range is ok.

My boyfriend heard about this place from one of his Hispanic co-workers so of course, it had to be authentic cuisine right? CORRECT! I've recently moved to this area and there are a plethora of Hispanic and Jamaican restaurants to choose from (being Jamaican, I've tested and decided) but with no native tongue for true Hispanic cuisine, we didn't know which restaurant to visit. La Sirenita was the best! We walked in to order, which was easy since every item on the menu had an accompanying picture and English translation. The prices were also very reasonable. We ordered a variety of tacos, quesadilla, dinner platters, seafood - all coming to under $40. The wait was about 20 minutes, but they have pick-up or eat-in options available. This didn't matter because you can see into the kitchen, which they make authentic meals from scratch (I mean, the beef taco wasn't Taco Bell's mystery meat or ground beef, it was real steak strips). The taste of everything was SO GOOD! And I had food left over. If you're in this area looking for REAL Spanish food, this is the place to go. Just be wary of the parking, it's never any spots - but there are sidewalk parking directly across the street which isn't illegal :)

Tacos: 5 stars. Tried the lengua, barbacoa (goat), and carne enchilada (spiced pork). All were excellent, but I was especially impressed with the carne enchilada. Rice: 4 stars--traditional pan-fried yellow mexican rice, but with some nice additions such as green beans and corn (though this was a bit sparse). Beans: 5 stars--soupy pinto beans, only lightly mashed, just like I like them. Service: 3 stars. My friend ordered a red enchilada with just cheese. Came with chicken. The waitress was the one who suggested skipping on the chicken. Ordered was not conveyed. I ordered a second coke twice and it never arrived. Other: having lived in el barrio for many years, I was very impressed with the restrooms, complete with an automatic towel dispenser, and stocked handsoap. Very clean and nice. I wish my Houston joints and my spots in Sunset Park, Brooklyn took pride like this in their facilities. Pricing: at 2.75, this is a little much, though these are bigger than street taquitos. I don't like paying more than 2 bucks for a taco, but I am very cheap. Some of the best tacos in the US are really cheap, like Tacos El Bronco in Brooklyn, NY. Takeaway: Good, fresh, moist taco meat done just right. I stand by these tacos. I think they know what they are doing. And yes, they do serve lots of beer, including buckets (cubetazos) and margaritas for 6.50.

I get it, I know it's hard to find decent mexican food in this area. I mean, I know this is not California or Texas, but that does not make this place a 4 or 5 stars restaurant just because of the lack of options. This is by far the worst mexican food restaurant in the whole metropolitan area. Everything we tried was poorly made, bland, just spicy and pricey for no plausible reason. I had to send back a tripe soup because it tasted like boiled, spicy tripe with no flavor at all. This is a rough latino neighborhood, still, Los Tres Reyes, just a few blocks away, offers far better food in a much smaller, almost claustrophobic mexican food joint. Poor management is written all over the place in La Sirenita...

Wow.. the Tacos are REAL tacos.. I especially like the Chorizo and the Goat tacos.. Great starters. The rice and beans are delicious sides. I've tried many things on the menu so its hard to identify what I really like. The Enchiladas Verde are terrific but spicy.. beware. Family and homey with all the locals coming in to watch their favorite soccer match on!

I adore this place! Although I was the only non-Hispanic person in the place, the cashier and workers made me feel welcomed. My Spanish is extremely basic, but I can see that this place has a family vibe. There were tables of families dining and laughing and having a great time. After looking over the menu, I noticed that there was a wide variety of seafood items. I don't like seafood but my SO and sister loves it, so this may be a new spot for us. Instead of dining in, I ordered take out. My SO got three beef tacos and I ordered three simple tostados and a quesadilla. It didn't take long for the order. When I got home the food was still warm. The food was awesome and the green salsa was spicy and delicious. The beans were seasoned perfectly. I'm almost scared to ask what was the seasoning (please don't be flavored with meat). I think I found a solid place for those rides home after work.

Tacos here are the order of the day. Again, this dish made the authentic way will dispel one's notion of what it is. They arrive with a double layer of fresh and soft tortilla tasting recently made and exuding its corn-goodness much like ground hominy. The filling is made with marinated chunks of meat, not the usual ground meat, cooked on the flat grill and nearly greaseless but tasting savory. Here, these wraps are served with some limes and topped with a generous amount of sweet onion and green onions and cilantro - that simple. Maybe a touch of the fiery red chili or green chili sauces would be the additional dressing, but not the slathering of salsa that we are accustomed to. The pork and chicken versions hit the spot for my BFF who loves their rendition here and makes it a point to join my group when we visit here. Other versions made with barbecued goat, Barbacoa, and cow's tongue, Lengua, are indicative of the level of authenticity one finds here. I quite enjoy the slight gaminess and chewy texture of my order made with tongue despite it being a bit fattier than the usual cuts. This was the first time we tried this restaurant. My parents actually recommended it because of Yelp. We parked. We looked at each other because it doesn't look much from the outside. As soon as we walked in everyone was very pleasant, saying "hello" and "welcome". We sat down and were amazed by the prices! The week before, my boyfriend and I had dinner for $99, with tip! Here, the average was $9 per plate. Beers were $3!! Amazing! The chips and salsa were great. Just as a heads up, the salsa is really spicy, just the way we like it. They were showing novelas on their TVs, which was fun. :) So we order the food, I get carne asada and my boyfriend gets pollo millanesa (if I remember correctly.) We always have a contest on who has the better dish and I SO won this time. :) His was good, just not a lot of flavor in the chicken. The portion size was just right. When we walked in there were two other tables. By the time we order our dinner, they place was almost packed. The server was ok, not very attentive. But everyone else was nice. So with a grand total of $36, not including tip, this was a GREAT place! Cheap eats for great food! I recommend it to everyone! I'm glad it's pretty close to my house, because we'll definitely be back.

Ay ay ayyyyy where to start? Maybe with the fact that I am Mexican (as in I grew up there Mexican not second generation). You probably don't care but that (in my view) put my review in perspective. Anyhow, I've been looking for Mexican places since I moved to DC and so far I've been sticking with Taco Bar in Gaithersburg. A friend of mine said "La Sirenita" was better than Taco Bar so I ventured out to PG County to try. As others have pointed out, yes that area is filled with Mexican taco places. I had high hopes (maybe that was also a problem). I should have known better when I saw the food was served on red plates with Chinese characters (the type that are used in cheap Chinese restaurants in Mexico). Why would anyone serve Mexican food on Chinese plates? I let it go. I first ordered an horchata and an agua de jamaica (hibiscus) for my brave, sweet, and kind companion. I was embarrassed when the lady brings out our drinks in PITCHERS! Yes, they don't serve it in glasses, they serve it in pitchers. This is NOT a Mexican thing. Mexicans don't drink out of pitchers, buckets, or anything similar. We are normal folk. We use regular glassware. I wondered why they would serve us in a pitcher (with a straw in it and all - so it is not like they forgot the glass). Perhaps they don't want to be bothered with refills? I won't speculate because it doesn't matter. I don't like that practice. The horchata was decent but the jamaica was not good at all. By this time, I realized this place was a little weird for MY taste so I canceled my order and ordered 3 steak tacos instead. I figured I could not go wrong with tacos. Wrong. The carne asada is fried in oil so the tacos come out all greasy. Its ok they are just served with meat and tortilla so they were eatable. We also ordered seafood soup. Ughhh that soup had potato and some purposeless shell fish. Oh and the stench! You would need a lot of lemon to be able to eat that. We tried but ended up leaving 7/8 of the soup intact. I asked where the owners where from and they said Oaxaca so I realized the food would be different from northern cuisine but still that was a lame excuse. Oaxacan food should be much better than that. I can go on and on but I suggest you look at the pictures I uploaded, take my review with a grain of salt, and do your thing. Or if you really want my opinion, save yourself the trip to Hyatsville and drive to Taco Bar in Gaithersburg instead (authentic home-style Mexican food, much cheaper and way cleaner).

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
