We came here on a whim, but turns out the food was pretty good! I really liked the Papusas!

El Amate is tucked away into an international plaza in Hyattsville, but don't judge a restaurant by its exterior. Inside offers a huge dining room and bar, and what it lacks in décor, it balances with inexpensive, delicious, Salvadoran/Mexican food and drink. Servers were friendly and are fluent in both English and Spanish. One $5 margarita ($3.50 during happy hour) will have you tipsy for a few hours, and most likely not able to drive, so be cautious. Thin chips and a tasty salsa should help soak up some of that alcohol. The pupusas had a good char, but I've had more flavorful versions of both those and the curtido, though, to me, pupusas are one of those items that I love good or bad. My friend's sopa de gallina might be my new illness/hangover cure (she swears by it), as it was fresh, full of vegetables, and served with a delicious wild chicken thigh and homemade tortillas. I went the Mexican route, choosing my favorite--enchiladas. One beef and one chicken enchilada were huge, well-seasoned, and smothered in cheese and a rojo sauce. I could barely finish one--you could definitely share this dish. Unassuming restaurants are my favorites--it's like the hidden treasures of the foodie world.

I ordered the fajita mix and asked for corn tortillas instead of flour. After the food arrived, was informed that they could not bring the corn tortillas because the owner did not allow substitutions. First of all, I would not have ordered the fajitas unless I could have the corn tortillas. The waitress apologized and blamed it on the owner, and said she was embarrassed. I explained I would not have placed this order had I known. I had every right to walk out, but I didn't. I also ordered extra lime wedges but none came. Had to finish over half my tortilla -less meal before I received the lime. So the fajita mix was not as greasy as most. The shrimp was large size. No flavor. The beans were Mexican style but whole. The poco de gallo had no flavor, just some hothouse tomatoes cut up with a little onion. The rice was cooked and was ok. Just another "Latino" restaurant without distinction... I'd skip it. I won't be back.

I was a little skeptical about this place because I've heard mixed reviews from people that've been here before. So me and my girlfriend decided to check it out. For starters, the server didn't look like she was in a good mood. Seemed a little irritated by the fact that we were having a hard time deciding what to get. We got pupusas revuelatas and they were pretty Good but they took about a very long time to come out. Then we get a fajita to share, normally fajitas are big portions of food, not here. Ohh well. When we get the check I see that on the breakdown of the bill there was a gratuity charge already included ,not used to seeing that. Def. will not be back here.

The place is very nice but should control a little clintela with the customers nievos I went for karaoke and a type I singing take my finger by three or four occasions not it knew not is who was? Better pay my Bill best I remove in place for reasons that I am not accustomed to problems of anti-social people who cannot control the security of site... What a shame that rich food good attention is good place with mode... Pitiful mind against not the antisocial arriving... what a shame and who and embarrassing

The servers are frankly not very bright, they make simple little mistakes from what seems to be inexperience, but they are friendly enough I wish the music would be toned down, it is always too loud That said, this place is great because the food is excellent and prices reasonable. Full of flavor, best pupusas in the area. Highly recommended
