Don Pollo in Hyattsville, Maryland has the following positives: The food is served quickly and at cheap prices. Additionally, the customer service was good and the cashier seemed concerned in making sure that our order was served correctly and the music played was a pretty good mix. The chicken lime soup with lime and cilantro tasted pretty decent. The caveats: The chicken skin that I got with my meat tasted fine, but I only wish that the chicken was cooked a little more to my liking (there was slightly too much redness to it). I tried some fried plaintains with the meat and mac and cheese but the mac and cheese did not compare to what I can buy from a grocery store and the plaintains were too soft in consistency. In their defense, it does take a lot to get me to really like the food so there may be others who greatly love this place.

I was introduced to this place just this past weekend. I had the chicken, rice and beans, and plantains. Also shared a mix of yucca/fries. Definitely dipped my chicken in the mayonnaise based sauce they provided on the side- and it was good. The green sauce was too spicy for me. The chicken was moist and had pretty good flavor...and for the cost it definitely met my expectations. You get PUH-lenty of food. Good black beans and rice. Plaintains were ok- they were greasy and I've had better... but still good. Yucca was good also. The chicken is moist and flavorful, not too heavy, and you can't beat the cost (less than 10 bucks). If I lived near any of these locations, I would get into trouble because I would eating there too often. But I don't... however I shall find a way back...

There is a lot of pollo a la brasa in the College Park are so Don Pollo definitely has a lot of competition. Unfortunately, I do not think they can compete with places like Sardis and El Pollo Rico. The chicken did not really have a distinct taste, it seemed as if they didn't really try to season it that much. The yuca was overcooked and stale. I asked for a cup of water and the guy took a cup and went to the faucet and filled up then gave it to me (without any ice). For the same price I would much rather drive to Sardis and get much better quality food.

Love the food. Always get my food quick. 1/4 Dark w/ Yuca and Plantains. Also the mango Juice "Del Nectar". A Friday night staple.
(4)Mary K.
3.5 Stars. The whole chicken plus 2 sides for $14.99 is a pretty good steal. Chicken is juicy, goes well with the spicy green sauce they serve. Chicken is not overly seasoned. Yucca fries would have probably been better if we didn't have to reheat them in the oven, but definitely go for the plantains. Service is fast. They even have a drive thru!!!

First of all, know that this restaurant is now known as Pollo Oro. But it's got the same location and menu. That being said, this is a great place for some authentic South American grub. Very generous portions for a crazy low price. The chicken is juicy and flavorful. The rice, beans, and plantains are all just like my Colombian grandmother used to make. The staff is very friendly and speedy, with service in English or Spanish. There is also even a drive thru. This is a great meal if you've got time or if you're in a rush. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten the (massive) chicken burrito for $6 from the drive thru when I'm tight on time.

Best dark meat chicken (all i order anyways) at any of the local notable pollo a la brasa places. Yea, that includes sardis. The skin is always nice and crispy with extraordinarily juicy and well seasoned meat. Second best sauce at one of these places that ive ever tasted (the best being crisp & juicy in rockville) is their orange/pink/mild sauce. Slaw is decent, fries and plantains are average. Mac and cheese is delicious and unusual but this place is great because of the chicken. Similar prices to everywhere else. After finding out about don pollo and sardis at the same time and living equidistant from both, i went to dons probably 1.5 times per week during my senior year and sardis a total of twice, once to try it and once to confirm it was nauseating greasy and worse. Also sardis is way more crowded.
(5)Brian S.
Not as good as chicken rico right up the street...Not bad but definitely not the best. the safron sauce isn't as good, chicken is just slightly behind.
(3)B B.
This location has new owners with a new name. I think it is pollo loroco or something. The yucca always seems burnt or dry. So disappointed management changed, refuse to eat here anymore. Upkeep of facility is awful. What a waste.
(1)CASSIE L.
Less flavor than Sardi's for roughly the same price. No delivery, although they do offer a drive through which would be great if they weren't located at one of the busiest intersections in the area. The chicken is cooked well, but is far less moist and flavorful than others I've tried. Lacks real seasoning, and the marinade doesn't flavor the meat all the way through. The skin lacks cripness. The fried yucca is good and crisp, but the pieces are cut way too large. Extra (tiny) cups of sauce cost a whopping 75 cents each whereas other places will gladly give you a bag of them for free. I imagine that in a world where Sardi's is like Five Guys, Don Pollo is more like McDonalds.

great Peruvian chicken.

As I've been working with an El Salvadorian/Honduran lady at my parents' store for the past 2 weeks, I've had a chance to practice my lame and remedial Spanish skills as she doesn't speak much Ingles. One day, it went a little something like this... hit it! Yo: Pregunta las piquitas hablamos de pantalones en la esposita de levanta la semana de manos? (OK, so sometimes, I like to throw in stuff that I have no idea what the meaning is. Spanish just sounds cool) Ella: Que? Yo: Nada. Quieres lengua? Ella: Si. Quiero lengua de vaca. Yo: So, se gusta lengua de cerdo? Ella: No Yo: Quieres pollo a la brasa? Ella: Si Yo: Adonde vas a comer pollo a la brasa? Ella: Langley Park. (draws for me). Joo know Cantockee? Yo: Si. I know KFC Ella: Cantockeee here. Pollo de la brasa esta aqui. Yo: Que es el nombre del restaurante? Ella: No se Yo: OK. Voy a comer este pollo de la brasa hoy I think this is a local chain. I looked it up and there's a few in the area. Standalone building off of University Blvd. right by KFC and even has a drive through! I opted to go in to maximize my experience. Got here at 1:56pm EST on a weekday and it's filled to around 40% capacity with mostly Latinos and a few non-Latinos. The menu on the wall is in Spanish (I think) but the printed menus has English translations. Grab an Inka Cola from the fridge and wait in line behind 3 people, but the line goes quick. Yo: Pollo entree con ensalada lechuga y papas fritas por favor Ella: For here or to go? Yo: Aqui, for favor. I have a question, puede tener solamente piernas? Ella: (asks chicken killer) OK 2 minutes go by, my number is 73 is called and everything's wrapped as a to-go order. This is a pet peeve of mine. Why do they ask if they're gonna give my my chicken to go? Why? I ask you, why??? Porque??? BUT, upon opening my chicken container, all is forgiven. Not do I have 4 quarters of dark meat... I have ***5*** !!! I dunno if they did this on purpose or by accident, but I did not complain. 1.25 chickens for $12.99. Or was it $13.99. This review is really going downhill I see. Friggin got Ginko Biloba to help me with my fading memory but I keep forgetting to take it. Same with Kevin Trudeau's Mega Memory I stole like 10-12 years ago from somewhere I can't remember. To this day, I've never remembered to read it. Chicken: Really good. Really liked the marinade. Not overly smokey. It's not too strong on the seasonings, particularly the stronger flavored ones like cumin, but has a good balance of seasoning goodness and saltiness. Meat was juicy. I think the extra quarter they threw in was one they wanted to get rid of... into my huge third trimester belly. No complaints about free food from me. The skin was nicely cooked and some would say crispy, on 3 of the 5 quarters I had. Coleslaw: Me likey. Not overlay mayonaisey. Crispy. A little underseasoned, but complimented the chicken well. French fries: Standard pollo a la brasa steak fries. Nicely crisp and nicely salted. Sauces: - The mild sauce wasn't yellow. It was more of an orangeish/pinkish color. A little creamy with a little tartness while being smooth. I resisted drawing those lines under my eyes with it like how football players do. That would have been rad. - The green hotter sauce was good! Closest thing to El Pollo Rico green sauce I've tasted. Had a slight kick to it too. Yum-O ! Next day: Yo: Yo fui a comer el pollo a la brasa Ella: A Don Pablo? Yo: I thought you didn't know the name of it? Ella: Que? Yo: Nada. Ohhhh. Es bueno! Me gusta mucho! Ella: Mucho o mucho mucho? Yo: Si. MUCHO mucho! 3.5 stars!
