small but comfortable, the HH is amazing with the half price Bud and Sapporo. Sushi was ok. Little, middle aged server was surly and rude. would go back, but definitely not to this location.

Stopped in here for a quick lunch. The place is okay, but I'd never come back or recommend it to anyone. Here's why: - The menu is unimpressive - The service was slow - They don't offer gluten-free soy sauce (most places do these days) - The VEGGIE rolls had little orange fish eggs on them. No thanks! Here's why I'm giving at least two stars: - Although slow, the staff was friendly - My lunch order came with soup and salad. - I was also given some sort of crunchy complimentary wonton thing. I didn't eat it, but that was nice.

Despite the reviews, I tried Osaka after 9 months of living practically 5 minutes from there... And to my surprise the California Rolls & Crunchy Shrimp Rolls (Sushi) Were DELICIOUS!!!
(5)Chris S.
**NEW OWNER** What more can I ask for. The owner Mr. Roy is GREAT along with his daughter Mei and wife who all run the place. Sushi is always good and fresh. And prices are fair. The only thing needed here is to remodel the place and bring in more light. I frequent Osaka on a regular basis and pick this place over the others in the area for freshness and how friendly the staff is here. To top it off everyone knows my daughter's names and treat them beyond GREAT. Very kid friendly. We sit at the sushi bar so we can talk to Mr. Roy. You won't find a sushi spot family ran within a few miles easily.

3.5 stars. I'll be honest, I prefer the old management. The new management is trying their best, I suppose, but the old management offered more incentives for their customers (i.e. happy hour, discounts, etc.) If I'm in need for sushi, I head here because it's right in the neighborhood. My usual is either the California Roll, Philly Roll, Golden Bridge Roll, Cherry Blossom Roll, or Butterfly Roll. I try other rolls every once in a blue moon but, really, it's pretty much the ones I've listed. Hey, I stick to what I know. Anywho, no complaints about the sushi. It could be better but it's definitely not bad, either. I do love the appetizer options. especially their Osaka Balls, Shumai, and Gyoza. For noodles, I always get the Yakisoba, the chicken and/or shrimp option. Pretty tasty. For a neighborhood option, it's nice to have around. The average rating is mostly because of management. Despite being wedged between a liquor store and a dry cleaning place (I think...?), inside of Osaka is clean, nicely decorated and, surprisingly, pretty quiet.

I really enjoyed the Spicey Tuna Handroll! The service was great and the waitress was friendly. Great atmosphere too. I highly recommend.

I feel bad for this poor review but the sushi was not good. I was weary about trying this place because of the mixed reviews but I realized that in order to formulate my own opinions I had to try it. I don't want to make this long but the sushi was dry and rubbery, almost like it wasn't freshly made but I witnessed the sushi chef make it with my own eyes. I've had better gas station sushi. The tempura fried shrimp were more like batter deep fried shrimp fried using 5 month old grease. Just not quality sushi, maybe I had a bad batch? Not sure but I won't be going back. The only good roll was the philly roll which im happy I got or I would have been starving.

Despite the terrible reviews, I decided to try Osaka after a friend told me that this is their go-to sushi place. I had a fine experience, so I'll go back. We ordered California and yellowtail & scallion rolls. They were ready for pickup within ten minutes. The California rolls were tasty and the avocado was fresh, though they could have used a little more crab. Also, they had roe inside the roll and on the outside, which I thought was a bit strange. The yellowtail & scallion roll was tasty, and I would order it again. I was told that they have a sushi happy hour, so I'll go again and check out some of their other rolls.

It's a decent quick lunch when you work at Goddard Space Flight Center. Staff is friendly and the food is predictable & consistent. The bento box give you a huge lunch, nice sampling. Service is quick & attentive without being annoying.
(3)Shashi B.
Chicken Teriyaki Bento box was excellent. This place is right outside the NASA Goddard Center. Fair warning the box is very filling so eat brakfast early
(4)Joe R.
This is my go to sushi joint in the Greenbelt area. They have tasty rolls at decent prices. The staff is attentive and friendly. Whenever I go it seems to be a quiet and not-too-crowded place where you can enjoy your meal and a book or bring a date or something. Definitely recommended if you like good sushi.
(4)John V.
Osaka has just changed management. The menus are new. The interior space is now more open, the center divider having been removed. I kind of liked the old floor plan, but it's not a major issue. The frequent customer cards are now gone. The food remains very good. The staff remains attentive. There are some slight differences in preparation, but again minor. If you liked the old Osaka, you'll like this one.
(4)Rudy W.
Well this one has one of the worst looking roll ever. My kids probably can even make a better roll than the chef. The whole time he was there making the sushi, he has been taking a deep breath something that bothers him. The meat is just like a bad fish or worst kind of fish you can get from oriental market. I can't describe the taste without having to recall the bad experience I had. There are other much better sushi place in DC area. worth the drive.
(1)Nick Y.
Good, quality rolls. I think they can be a bit tighter but the flavors are there. Not too expensive and good atmosphere. They have bento boxes for lunch and dinner. If your looking for a place where you can go and not put on fancy pants and still get some decent food, then this is the place for you. I did lunch here the other day and was in and out in 30 minutes.
(4)S B.
Used to come here all the time for lunch. Service and quality of food had declined. Might give it a try again, but not in the near future.
(2)Chris M.
Came for dinner ordered a meal off the menu that came with a California roll and asked to make it spicy and the waitress quickly said no you can order an extra roll spicy but cannot substitute a spicy California roll for a regular one.........really......I can't get my food how I like it I don't care if you up charge me.....wow. It's also the quieter than the library I feel like I'm not allowed to speak there. Then my tuna roll comes out at room temp. thats plain scary fish not being held at the proper temp screams make someone sick. Won't be back

This is a great sushi place. Nice and quiet for two but also can handle some larger parties of 4-6. Prices are reasonable. Fish is always fresh.
(5)Richard S.
In all honesty, this place is a bit of a dive, but it's a quite, subdue and moderately priced dive. It's not a world class restaurant. It's a place were the beer is cold and the green tea is piping hot. Where the miso soup taste like heaven when your sick and you get a ginger salad that taste like more ginger then lettuce. They have the cheapest 22oz Japanese beers in the area (about 6 bucks). The biggest issue is the sushi. The second you say sushi, the food critic in everyone kicks in. There are 2 places in northside PG county that have better sushi. Osaka sushi is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, it's good at best of times and okay the rest. The sushi chef I've seen most times is a guy the regulars call Lee and seems like a nice enough fella. Something unheard of in this area. I've been there about ten times this year and every time the place packed, but quite. There hot food seems to be the best and I always recommend the yakitori. The atmosphere is kind of amazing, unlike most Japanese placed in the area were they try to look very upscale, Osaka has the feel of something out of a Takashi Miike film. Dim lighting, with a wood and paper feel, more of the relaxed setting not looking to impress anyone. No pop culture or traditional Japanese feel here. At the end of the day, this is a place meant for NASA workers after work to go have a beer and enjoy happy hour. If you want better sush, I would go, jump on the metro and go into to DC. If you want a chill atmosphere, a quick bite that will not break the budget and cold beer, go to Osaka's.
(4)Megan D.
If you are in the Greenbelt/NASA area and you want a hot dish of noodles, or some tempura you will do just fine at Osaka. In fact, I think their shrimp and vegetable tempura is amazing. My boss says it is the best he's every had. However, the sushi at Osaka is just not very good. Mainly because the fish is not fresh. If I have a hankering for sushi and I'm nearby, I will drop in for the California or vegetarian rolls. The miso soup is edible and the salads are pretty basic. I do like their ginger dressing. The service is usually fine, the decor basic.
(3)Richard I.
Definitely a diamond in the rough of a place. Situated in a strip across from the Goddard Space Center main entrance, you would not expect to find a good sushi place. Yet, there is one. The menu is not extensive but what they have is consistently tasty. Good price and surpasses some expensive places that I ate in DC. My advice is to sit at the sushi bar. The Sushi chef is friendly and talkative. The table service can be lackluster.
(4)Sheila S.
My husband and unused to eat here a few times a month. After our favorite waitress left to pursue a career in real estate, we tried to stay, however the rude and abrupt service left us no choice but to cut them loose. Now we eat there once every two or three months when we just don't feel like traveling farther for dinner.
(2)Tom B.
Went on Monday for the 1/2 price limited menu. You get large pieces of fish with the rice.
(2)Karen A.
Given the area that it's in, Osaka gets 3.5 stars, so I'm going to round up to 4. Hey, it could be worse for PG. I have never been here for lunch or the sushi happy hour, so I am rating on dinner experiences alone. For the decent prices, the food here is pretty good. The quality of the sushi, while not the best, actually surprises me here given the area. There's nothing new and exciting on the sushi menu, just your staples. If you're wary of PG County sushi, try one of the hot entree items instead. I love the udon soups here. (unless they run out of noodles, as they have on occasion) They are cheap, filling and tasty. Osaka also offers bento-style entrees for dinner that are also not bad. Service can be off and on... the sushi chefs at the sushi bar are often friendly and playful. Service is fast given that the restaurant is very small, even though there is only one waitress. Table service can sometimes come off as a bit cold, but I've gotten over it when I eat here.

I love me some bargains but bargain sushi sounds like a request for some food poisoning. I've been to Osaka's sushi happy hour 5 times (my wife loved to eat salmon and surf clams towards the end of her pregnancy) and I have not gotten sick and our daughter is healthy. Please note: I am not a sushi connoisseur. I really only like Salmon and I think Toro is grossly overrated and overpriced, so you sushi aficionados may disagree with this review. That being said, this place is a pretty good deal during their happy hour (I believe it's from 4-6). Most sushi (salmon, tuna, surf clam, cooked shrimp, etc..) is priced under $2 per piece; I believe the sake (salmon) was $1.40/piece. Food - Can't beat the prices during happy hour. The fish was pretty fresh and its ratio to rice was acceptable. Admittedly, the rice can be subpar at times. If you order $10 worth (which is roughly 8 pieces) you get a miso soup and a salad, both of which are average. My wife likes seaweed salad and she says Osaka's is average. They serve it to you in a fairly large bowl but then you realize that the bottom half is lined with radish. BOO! Service - This place is Korean owned but the service is pretty good. I've not sat at the sushi bar, so I'm not sure how the chefs are, but the servers are ah joo mah's (older korean ladies) and they're pretty nice...though they probably talk about us after we leave.

This restaurant is good for lunch. The Chicken Yakisoba is really tasty. However, BE WARNED - if you ask for a FORK good luck in getting one. Also, the waitress there needs a lesson in CUSTOMER SERVICE. I used to think that it was just me, but after reading the previous posts, maybe not. No one can have a bad day 365 days a year (unless your name is CHARLIE BROWN)...
(3)JC S.
I'm giving Osaka two stars (instead of one) for the service. The waitress was very friendly and efficient, and she got my order absolutely right, even though I asked for several modifications to items on the menu. I ordered three sushi rolls, and the quality of the fish was poor. The salmon and tuna were largely tasteless, and what I did taste was not very fresh. Not "I'm going to get sick" bad, but "this is not the delightful experience I was hoping for" bad. I'm a huge, huge sushi fan, and in my frequent desperation I'll eat almost any sushi- from the grocery store, from "fast food" sushi joints, anything- but I won't go back to this place. My husband got katsu don and the pork was tough and chewy. On the whole, a disappointing experience.

Before I retired, I LOVED coming to this restaurant for both their sushi and the BEST GINGER ICE CREAM IN THE WORLD! Due to circumstances beyond my control, I had stopped coming to this restaurant for awhile and didn't know that the management had changed. Tonight, a friend brought me to the Osaka, for a special treat, and I was deeply disappointed. The new menu is off-putting and, when I asked for one of the new desserts listed, that I had never had before, Tempura Ice Cream, the waitress went into this L-O-N-G story about why they no longer offer any desserts! Strike One! I asked for some hot tea, remembering what that lovely tea used to taste like in those heavy ceramic mugs. What I got was tasteless in PLASTIC! Strike Two! Then my Salmon Don was eventually brought to my table, after what felt like waiting forever, and quickly discovered ICE CRYSTALS in all the fish slices! Strike Three! Knowing how the former management carefully prepared their food and how FRESH their sushi used to be, what this current management is doing is lousy. What used to be my favorite restaurant as been crossed off my list. I do not plan to return and will advise my friends to avoid this place.

I have been here a few times before and everything has been good each time. Service is prompt and polite. You get piping hot soup and a fresh salad prior to your meal. The Crazy Roll is top notch and huge!

Osaka has changed owners since I wrote my review, and I can no longer give it my endorsement. The decor has slightly improved, but the menu has declined in appeal and quality. I didn't find many interesting things on the sushi menu, all of my favorites were gone, and the prices seemed to be higher. The lunch/dinner menu had some intriguing pan-Asian options, but the curry that we tried was very disappointing. To top it off, I was incredibly ill later in the evening after our visit - this could've been a coincidence, but the whole experience was incredibly off-putting. I mourn the loss of "old Osaka" terribly. It was a work lunch favorite, and an occasional dinner treat. I have many fond memories of eating here with my best friend, and I long for the sushi treats I can no longer get anywhere - seared garlic albacore and the most perfect scallop salad. Bring them back, and maybe I'll give the new menu another shot!

I consider myself a sushi connoisseur of sorts and I definitely like variety beyond the california roll - although I prefer cooked sushi over raw anyday. I love this place. It has great variety and has pretty good happy hour specials and deals. The price is somewhere in between, its not too expensive but you can still get decent variety for a reasonable price. My particular favs are their shrimp cocktail roll, redskin roll, and lobster california roll, but pretty much all of their sushi is great! I see a few people on here are pretty hard on sushi/food in general in PG County. I will say that this place tops a few overrated sushi places in Washington, DC and Bethesda. Osaka gives you quality and variety at a reasonable price. The location is great because its easy to get to off the parkway. Plus, last time I checked Greenbelt was pretty far advanced, food and otherwise! Perfect for those nights when you don't want to hit the city just for good sushi. One flaw that was mentioned is the lack of friendliness by the wait staff. If you become a regular, they are very friendly and even give you extra perks. But the woman at front did used to irk me in the beginning. The guys that prepare the sushi however are very friendly and tend to your needs. If you want a restaurant that doesn't have boring, staple sushi, isn't outrageously priced, and most importantly tastes good, this is the place.
(4)Stephanie M.
I went here for lunch recently and I thought the daily lunch box was a good deal. I didn't have the sushi, plus I wanted to be in and out since it was on my lunch break. I will say for Greenbelt this is a great place.
(3)Mikel B.
This place is good but not outstanding. I like it because it is close to home and reasonably priced. I've been to better places but they were way more expensive. service can be a bit slow.
(4)A C.
2 1/2 stars. I go back and forth. Service can be brusque, and always a bit disappointed if you don't order more, or more expensive food. At least that's the feeling I get. Good sushi, not great, not inventive. Very picky sushi-eater comment: in the States there are generally two kinds of spicy tuna rolls: finely chopped tuna in a spicy, orangey mayo sauce, or more chunky, diced tuna with just chili oil, no mayo. I much prefer the former. Taste, mouth feel, etc. Anyway, the Osaka chef makes a hybrid, finely chopped but without the spicy mayo. Disappointing. The kushi katso is very good, never greasy.
(2)Farida A.
Had a craving for sushi but PG County isn't exactly known for it's cuisine ... so I went here with low expections. The food was pretty good. In a pinch (and when I'm too lazy to drive somewhere better) I'll definitely come here again.
(3)Kim T.
I've been there twice now. I've gotten the tuna and yellow tail rolls. The fish is like pasty mush. It is pretty nasty. Not quality sushi at all. If you get a roll I'd probably get a cooked one. The tables are were very sticky.
(2)Melissa G.
Like the other reviewers- this place is just ok compared to the options in dc. But for Greenbelt and at this price range it is excellent. I am really greatful for decent sushi so close to home.
(4)Stephanie G.
Maybe this deserves 3 stars if I were to rate it relative to the general area, but if there were other options I would definitely not go here. I have been here for lunch, and I decided to get one of the sushi lunches. I ended up paying around $15 for the usual miso and salad along with the sushi, which was half a roll of tuna (3 small pieces) and some nigiri. For the price I paid for lunch in the area, I would have thought it would have been more filling. The soup was only luke warm, the salad had a pool of watery dressing at the bottom, and the sushi was not all that fresh. Is it bearable just to have somewhere a little different to go in an area without many options? Yes. But I would definitely say that it is not up to par for what I would expect from a sushi place. There was very little rice with each of the pieces of nigiri. One of the nigiri was the kind with egg, which I am also not too keen on. I prefer fish/seafood on all of my sushi, thanks. My friend got one of the bento boxes with gyoza in it, and I tried a bit of that - it is definitely NOT what you get in Japan (though I don't think he minded them). They are fried in something like a tempura style. His portion size did look more reasonable than mine, though. I will probably be back at some point to try the eel bowl and see if that is any better than the sushi...
(2)Natalie K.
I think it's a basically good place to get sushi. The variety is decent but not extraordinary. The service is basic but quick and courteous. I don't find that it's cheap but not outrageously expensive either. What I also really like is that it's a cozy (small) place, and you can go with a friend and actually hear each other.
(4)Shawn Y.
Its been a long time since I first came here, long before I became a Yelp member. Since then, I visit this place whenever I am in the area. I first tried this place based off a friend's recommendation. He works in the area and said the lunch specials are great and the sushi is good. My wife being a sushi fanatic, insisted we try it. Standing in the shopping center, we both thought this is insane, a shopping center whose highlight is K-Mart and a liquor store next door. We were at the door step so why not. We walked in to a friendly Japanese greeting like most sushi places. The decor was nothing to rave about and place overall was pretty small. There was one couple chatting with the sushi chef, who I found out later is the owner, and another group at a table. The menu is pretty standard, teriyakis, udons and then you have your paper sushi menu. We got the Spicy salmon, roe with quail egg, spider roll and one specialty roll (don't remember the name). As we waited for our food, we each received a small side salad. Now the salad was small but it was nice as other places we go to only give you a soup or salad as part of a combo meal. The rolls came out and that specialty roll we order, WOW. It was like a sashimi salad on top of a roll and it tasted amazing. All the fish was fresh, I didn't get sick from eating raw egg, and the portions were very healthy. No thin slices of fish. Finished off with a bottle of warm sake. No cold sake at the time. We go back when we can.. not enough. I would recommend that anyone in the area go and order the specialty rolls. We don't know the names of any but I guarantee you won't be disappointed with the quality, taste, and price.

I went to this restaurant while on a business trip. It is right across the street, so I thought it'd be an ideal place to get a light lunch. Mistake. The server/hostess was friendly and attentive. I ordered a sashimi sampler. It came with salad, miso soup and a side of rice. It was well-priced. The salad was like any other sushi restaurant: an iceberg mix topped with ginger dressing. It was OK. The miso soup was good, typical miso soup, and I didn't eat any of the rice (I was trying to eat light). The good attributes abruptly ended there... My sashimi came out (12 pieces, four types of fish for a decent price), and there were two types of fish that I did not recognize. One, in particular, looked like a white disk with no desirable fish-like features. But the worst part of the experience, and the reason for the 1-star rating, was that the fish was partially frozen, firm, and completely tasteless. I am not exaggerating when I say tasteless. I had to marinade my fish in soy sauce, top it with a considerable dab of wasabi, and eat it with a whole shaving of ginger just to taste anything resembling that of sashimi. And, most of my bites resulting in slushing into ice cold, nearly frozen fish. Sushi should be chilled. Chilled. Sushi is one of my top 3 favorite cuisines, and I have easily been to over 50 sushi restaurants. Osaka was the worst sushi experience I have ever had.
