The restaurant decor was nice a very casual. I like the service there, our server was very efficient and pleasant. We ordered chicken and sweet corn soup, chicken pan fried noodles and beef with scallion & ginger. The flavors are more geared to the westerners. But was not bad. The chicken and pan fried noodles seemed to be better than the beef. The soup was just ok.

This used to be the absolute best chinese in the germantown area. They have sadly gone way down hill. I have the imoression they are pinching pennies every way they can and it has resulted in increasingly poor food quality, even the duck sauce they served us the other night was awful. Really wish they could go back tio their old owner/ manger or whatever they used to have. Edit on 12-1-14 The food quality has gone up lately, getting closer to what it used to be. Have ordered several, times recently bcs it has improved enough for me to want to get it again. Hope they continue to move in this direction

Love their brown rice, and the service is good. I did also enjoy my dish of veggies and chicken with brown sauce. Our order of wontons was subpar, however -- a couple of them had no filling whatsoever, amounting to just fried wonton wrapper!

I'll give them some stars if I come back. They sat us down then ignored us. After five minutes the smell of hot oil started to hurt our eyes. Several staff members stood behind the counter looking our way but otherwise ignoring us. Several others kept busy doing other things. About 5 other tables with guests so it wasn't busy. Finally I decided $15 entrees for Chinese food weren't worth begging for service over.

Nice enough service and (strip mall) ambiance, but the food is horrible. My wife's vegetarian spring roll was super fatty, the vegetarian dumpling came with meat, the miso soup tasted like super-market pre-made, and the seaweed salad had an unfresh appearance a s taste. If you like greasy spoon Chinese and bastardized Japanese, this place is for you! Otherwise, avoid!

My hubby and son took me here for mother's day this year after being out at a festival all day. The food was excellent and the portions were large. We ordered the soup for 2, and it could have easily fed 3 or 4. The plates of food (Triple delight and chicken with Basil) were soooo good. The restaurant was clean, the music was good, and the staff was attentive. I also noticed that they had a dedicated sushi chef. If we are in the area again, we would definitely eat there again.

Not very crowded on a Saturday evening. The Hot and Sour Soup was fairly good. The Crab Rangoon was pitiful. They looked wonderful and the casing was fresh and tasty, but there was basically NO Crab inside, not even cream cheese with no crab just basically no filling maybe a 1/8 of a teaspoon. The Moo Goo Gai Pan was not bad but not much sauce. The Beijing Spicy Chicken was fair, but asked for very spicy and it was flavorful, but not spicy at all.

Wish I could give less than one star. Severely disappointed with everything from the service to the food. Never again.

Consistently good chinese food but a bit pricey. They deliver fairly quickly. I really enjoy the General Tso's and combination fried rice.

  • Sharon S.

The food is standard Chinese food, the sushi is pretty good, the Hot & Sour soup is usually really good, but you cannot go there for lunch without all of your coworkers knowing where you ate lunch. Five minutes and your clothes smell terrible. This place has horrible ventilation. It didn't used to be that way, but I just can't go there anymore.

What happened to this place? I have lived in germantown for 3 yrs and used to love their food. The last two times I have been there, the food and service has not been good. About 6 months ago, we ordered a large amount of food -- and several of the orders were very skimpy for the price. When I complained the next day, a very defiant girl at the cash register w/ glasses, pretended not to understand, then basically said - what do you want me to do about it? She took my name & number, but I never received a call. Tonight, really wanting Chinese food, I went back there -- the beef in the beef w/ vegetables was tough & was sparse and the container was only about half full and cold when I got it home. I'll not be back. Even though it is across the street from me - I'll not find another Chinese restaurant in germantown!

I wish they had places like this in the city. Nice airy cafe playing jazz music (albeit repetitive music). They give you free tea, which a lot of Chinese places have gone away from. They had a wonderful guy whose only job seemed to be to bus tables and bring us our drinks, and he always remembered down to which one of us liked lemons in our water. I don't know why he left. That said, the overall service is usually quite good. The food itself is always excellent. Their homestyle tofu is pretty special; a legitimate spicy dish with bok choy and some kind of seaweed. It dropped in quality for a little while; they said the guy who makes the sauce was on vacation. He came back, and I hope he never gets another day off (kidding, but that sauce is delicious). They have a variety of other excellent vegetarian dishes. Prices are not low, but the portions are quite substantial. Really, I'm hovering on 4.5 stars here. Best Chinese place in this area for sure.

Lunch menu improved over last few years. Soup was good.. General Tso chicken tasted a bit stale and sauce was gel like in some areas. Average at best. Service was good.

DELIVERY SERVICE IS TERRIBLE! This was the second time it took them over an hour to deliver our food and we are 3 miles from the restaurant. The first time, it took forever and they forgot a dish we had ordered. When we tipped the driver 10% he practically yelled at me saying he couldn't believe his tip was so small and it wasn't enough. Excuse me?! This time, when I called to check on our order an hour and ten minutes after we had placed it, we were told it would be there any minute. Almost 15 minutes later, we get a call from the driver who sounded like he had completely forgotten about our order and said he would be there in another 5 minutes. We haven't had any issues when we're dined in, and their sushi isn't bad. The service is just not what it should be. We will not be eating here again.

First time eating here tonight. I decided to drop in for carryout and make it a combination lo mein and red wine night. :). The lo mein was atrocious! I am originally from Silver Spring and am usually surrounded with authentic bona fide Chinese carryout so I'm not used to this. I mean how do you as a restaurant that specializes in this type of food serve this to people? The noodles were gummy and old tasting. The chicken tasted stale. In the end I deemed it was inedible and a waste of $10. Blech! Highly do not recommend. If they can't do lo mein right, I wouldn't touch their other dishes.

  • MozzarElla D.

Delicious vegetarian dumplings (steamed) were packed full of mushrooms and veggies. They had no problem fulfilling a request for substituting the brown sauce in a tofu dish to create Sesame Tofu. Flavor could have been a bit more complex, but nice enough. Proprietors very friendly and fun to be able to speak some Shangainese with them!

  • Starrlina S.

Expensive entrees $14+ for the amount they serve you in carry out. Probably different dining in. As far as taste, it's the best I've tasted in Germantown, but definitely NOT the best I've had. They need to check their orders better when you order carry out. Ordered shrimp lo-mean and got shrimp fried rice with small shrimp. Order extra shrimp because I had very little and I don't eat a lot of protein.

I first came to this place a few years ago when I moved to the area. The food was really delicious and yummy during my first few visits. However, it seems that over the years, the food has gone down slightly in quality. When I say quality, I mean that it has lost some of it's taste and not seasoned well. I really enjoy how this restaurant has a different spin to the preparation of their food and a different taste in comparison to other Asian cuisine restaurants. The lunch special is very fulfilling and they give you some pretty large portions. The lunch special starts at $6.95 and you have the option of either dining in or take-out. If you select take-out, your box will be filled to capacity. If you select dine-in, you'll get the same amount of food, but you experience the quiet and cozy ambiance of the restaurant. You can select from white rice, fried rice, lo mein, chow mein, or mixed veggies. Next, you can select up to 2 sides and they range anywhere from general tso chicken, bourbon chicken, spicy beef, black pepper chicken, pork with mixed vegatables, a tofu dish, and other dishes that might change on a daily basis. For $7.95 which is a dollar more, you can select a 3rd side to go with your meal. It seems like a lot, but they make sure they pack everything into your take-out box. After your main selection are made, you can select from either an egg roll or a chicken wing to go along with your meal. You also have sushi to select from as a meal. The most notable ones are the shrimp tempura and the California roll. You get 12 rolls for $7.95 and you can split them in 6 roll intervals which isn't bad if you would like a variety. My only complaint about the food was the general tso chicken. It's all clumped together with more breading than chicken which I wasn't a fan of. The server during the lunch special can be a little abrasive if you're unsure about what you want. They want the line to go quick and seem to be a little bothered with patrons who take too long in deciding what to choose from. Don't take offense to it. Once you go for the first time, you'll quickly get the routine down packed. The waiter is extremely nice and very attentive to your needs. Go for yourself and check it out. It's not bad, it's just not my first choice.

Great lunch sushi combo. The salad is delicious and the quality of the sushi is excellent. Yum! Plus, they also have a great buffet We ordered the sushi combo with salmon sushi and yellow tail sushi. Comes with soup and salad. Highly recommend

Came here with family after hearing good things about this place. I was very disappointed. Everything we tried didn't taste fresh from the General Tso' chicken, friend rice, and ribs. The best dish was the peppered steak and broccoli but it was okay. We had a lot of food left over and decided to just leave it at the table rather than taking it home. Which says a lot because I am queen of doggy bags.

We recently deemed all Fridays "Sushi Friday" and my hubby and I are quickly becoming regulars here. The sushi is excellent--fresh and delicious. The service is extremely quick and friendly. The sushi lunch menu is pretty limited, but they do have a lot of options if you're willing to spend a little more.

Some of the best sushi around this area iv been going here since I was a child and get got me to love the sushi the fish taste fresh and the rice is perfect there other food is also good but really only kinda better then most Chinese food restaurants but the sushi is the best that I can find in Germantown I always get the California roll yellowtail roll and the secret item the Hawaiian Volcano roll and it's well priced also at lunch on certain days they are also a buffet which is really good all the food here is good I would recommend it highly like I said iv been coming here as a kid every day after school I would come and I'd get sushi from the old Shanghai and there shrimp is good

Old Shanghai Cafe is our go to Chinese restaurant! The service is wonderful and the entrees and appetizers are always great. We consider ourselves regulars because we dine here every Friday and love every dish we've tried, including sushi! I recommend the Dragon maki, yellow tail/tuna/salmon nigiri, Beef Chow Fun, Dragon Chicken, roast pork lo mein, and Kung Pao Chicken. We love the Crab Rangoon and pan-fried meat dumplings. Other dishes we recommend are Crispy Sesame Chicken, Spicy Beijing Chicken, and General Tso's Chicken (specify white or dark meat). I love having a great Chinese restaurant in our neighborhood and if you live in Germantown, you gotta go!

Over priced, the crispy beef is ok but common for 14$$?? My girlfriend ordered the tofu family style and only had a few bites. The crab ran goons where Average at best. All together 34$ (pick up)for a disappointing meal. My advice is to go to Hunan cafe in Gaithersburg it taste better and you can get the same order for 20$ I will never go back to old shanghai again.

  • Lisa G.

First time we ate there they had no heat!!! How are you open when it is less than 20 degrees with no heat!!!! Best egg roll in area! Staff is very attentive and friendly!! A huge plus for the area! Second time much better! Great sushi! Order from menu- not buffet.

  • Hanna Y.

If I pay $17 for general tsos chicken and 2 egg rolls, I would expect my chicken to be freshly made and crispy and my egg rolls to be hot and flavorful. Sadly, the chicken came from a premade batch and the egg roll was lukewarm and the spring roll was the worst spring roll I've ever tasted. Additionally the rice had a weird consistency. Definitely not worth the $$.

I went here once for their Lunch Specials ($8). You get to pick 3 entrees + 1 side (wonton soup, egg drop soup, wing or egg roll). I got the egg roll; it's big but it's not that good. Rice's counted as an entree and the rest of the dishes aren't good. It's like cafeteria style; different dishes're laid out there and you just pick whichever you want. There's very limited selection for their lunch specials; probably around 8 dishes or so. The portion isn't that big at all; I was still hungry afterwards. I wouldn't come back here; I can find much better Chinese food out there for 8 bucks...

I decided to order take out from this place which is about 5-10 mins from my home rather than drive to my fave Chinese restaurant MC Asian Bistro in Frederick... Big mistake! Although there are some nice things about this place... Friendly staff! I was greeted as soon as I walked in. The restaurant appeared to be clean. I only waited about 5-8 minutes for my food. The temperature of the food was really hot when I got home which was great! However the food itself was like cheap greasy take out, only it was somewhat expensive. $22 and some change for two entrees. I ordered shrimp lo mien & broccoli beef. I only ate the lo mien which I found to be pretty flavorless, it was mostly greasy and salty. The portion size was small compared to other restaurants. The shrimp were so small and tasted like frozen salad shrimps. I would have rated this restaurant 2 & a half stars if the food had more flavor despite the expensive small portions.

The best General's Chicken ever. Also love their hot and sour soup, Kung Pao Shrimp and spicy wontons. Service is outstanding! I'm not a sushi guy so I can't tell you about that. But their cooked food is delish!

Best Chinese in the area. Consistently good food, customer service and clean location. Quick and friendly delivery. I'm giving it three stars bc my bf got sick from the General Tso's. I continue to order and I'm a happy customer.

  • Audrik C.

Would give it zero stars if that were an option. Ordered Chicken and Broccoli and it was absolutely disgusting. We couldn't even finish the meal. Go to the Happy Uncle instead.

This is by far the best Chinese food joint in Germantown. I live in the neighborhood and my apartment gets flooded with takeout menus, this place takes the cake. Excellent customer service and very fresh ingredients. The sushi is high quality as well, lots of good specialty rolls. Also, the delivery is always reliable. It normally takes under 30 minutes for the food to arrive. If you are looking for superior Chinese food in Upper MoCo, this is the place for you.

    (4)
  • Julie L.

It is my opinions that this is the only Chinese restaurant in Germantown worth eating at. Their lunch special of a side and three entrees and an egg roll or soup is a RIDICULOUSLY good deal. Also their food isn't overly salty. I especially love their hot and sour soup which is vegetarian.

  • Lindsay E.

I wasn't a huge fan of this place. Granted, I've only tried it once. I pass it on my way home, and had wondered if it might be one of those hidden gems you just stumble upon. It isn't. I thought it seemed a little bit sketchy that even though it's a "Chinese" restaurant, they serve sushi and other asian fare. I ordered the Peach Shrimp... it was edible, but nothing to get excited about. And at $15 for a small to-go container, it was unquestionably overpriced. The peaches were definitely canned peaches. I guess I should have known better. Even if this place were cheaper I wouldn't go back.

My family and I have been eating at this AMAZING cafe for 3 years. The service is quick (as soon as you order 10-15 minute wait for your food), attentive and friendly. They offer a wide variety of dishes even though we always order the same thing because we never get tired of those dishes (Orange Chicken, Comb. Lo Mein, Fried Rice, Wonton Soup, Spring Rolls). They also offer complimentary tea which is great during the cold winter season and fortune cookies after you finish your meal. In addition to it's excellent food and service it is very clean (floors, tables, chairs, bathroom, dishes and silverware)! The music is enhances your experience there. One time we decided to try a dish called-- Mango Chicken. However, it wasn't what we expected so our waiter was happy to exchange it. Another upside to OSC is that they have coupons in the mail magazine which is 10% or 15% off your order. To the other reviews made by everyone else who rated it 2 stars. First off, it's a Lunch EXPRESS, which means the whole menu is NOT offered. And for 3 entrees and a side $8 is not a bad deal at all! And although they have great service we are all human and make mistakes. So check your order (if you are carry out), before you leave so that it is correct!

Still loving this place. I have a really nasty sinus infection right now, and the pharmacist told me to eat a big lunch before taking the pills I picked up. So I swung by Old Shanghai Cafe to get their take-out lunch special. The guy behind the counter gave me a knowing look when I wheezed that I wanted whatever the most spicy things on the take-out menu were. He loaded me up with food and gave me a free cup of the extra hot chili sauce. Told me to mix it into everything and it would be very good. Operation Spicy Asian Food vs. Sinuses in currently in full swing. Thanks, OSC, for knowing exactly what I needed. :-)

Eh. Service was rather rude in carryout area. I ordered one rainbow roll and three kinds of sashimi. I waited right in front of them, because that was the only place to stand. The girl handed me the bag, repeated what I ordered, I left. Get home and it is not rainbow roll at all (which is $10.95.) It was a large maki roll, yes, but it has egg in it, crab stick and avocado - maybe some other kind of fruit? SO irritated. I hate crab stick and paying that much for a roll with no real fish! Caveat: there is a strongly-worded sign by the register that says to check your order so it's not wrong when you get it home, but I thought, given that I was the only carryout order and she was overseeing it, that there wouldn't be a problem. Wrong. I just...want someone to do something the right way when I pay for it so I don't have to worry about it. Is that too much to ask? I KNOW. Melodrama. Sushi is okay, not the freshest I've seen. Spring roll (I cheated on the Japanese side, yes. It's Friday - it's wild over here.) was dry. Overall? Disappointing. I will stick with my sushi boyfriend in the flashy clothes at Niwano Hana in Rockville.

I came to this place expecting some dishes from Shanghai since the name of the store was "Old Shanghai." I guess the name really refers to Old Japanese Occupation Shanghai as most of the dishes on the menu were sushi items. The available Chinese menu items were more like American-Chinese dishes you'd find at some carry-out in a shady part of town... except they had no idea what mumbo(mambo) sauce is. The quality of the food was different but we asked the waiter to suggest us things that were not fried so we ordered a Chicken Lettuce wrap. When the order came out, the chicken was batter dipped and fried. Who does that to a lettuce wrap? Anyone that orders a lettuce wrap is looking for something on the healthy side. Anyways, it wasn't a disaster. The soups were good.

Absolutely LOVE this place! I've been here a dozen times, and have eaten in and gotten food for pick-up. So far everything I've tried has been excellent - it's so hard to find a place that makes really good Cashew Chicken, and theirs is just perfect. The service is always awesome, too. Super attentive and friendly, and they're so quick to bring refills that I've never even had to ask for one. :) This is hands down my favorite restaurant in the area.

Making a quick review... Came here for an early dinner over the Memorial Weekend. It was empty. Not sure if we came at an off time, or it's always like that. But we sat inside and I really liked the inside. It wasn't a dingy Chinese restaurant. Real dinnerware! We ordered the Beef an Veggies, and the Beef Lo Mein. Lo Mein was fairly good, but the Beef n Veggies had a bit too much ginger in its flavoring. If it was cut back a little, and add an extra spice of some sort, I'm sure it'd do well. We tried one of the sushis to start off with. Now that was amazing. It was the Crazy Roll. No rice, all fish and avocado and cucumber. Mm. The end piece was so big I could hardly shove it all in my mouth :o) I'd go back for their sushi again.

Best chinese food in Germantown. Best I've had in Maryland too. Chicken with broccoli is so good and fresh tasting- I've found this dish to be the same old no matter where you go- but not here! Shrimp with walnuts has a bit too much breadding and I think they used pecans instead of walnuts, but it was still good. Never tried their sushi but I've seen people order it. If you get take out they skimp you on duck sauce. My biggest complaint as my husband and I love it with our chinese food. Overall best choice for chinese food in the germantown area.

YAY! The list of yummy places near my house grows! We went for lunch and it was great! It isn't a "Normal" Chinese takeout place. So the prices reflect this, but everything was great service was attentive and ambiance while a little cold was nice. I got the shanghai chicken and the boy got the ginger crispy beef and both were really well prepared, not greasy! Definitely get an egg roll if you go, the shell is so light and the filling is just perfect! A new staple on my I don't want to cook list!

This is such a cute chinese restaurant! Like so many others, it's in a nasty little shopping center with headache parking. However, the inside is decorated in a Modern Asian kind of way, it's clean and the quality of their food is really good. They have the regular chinese food offerings plus sushi. I've tried a few of their specialty rolls and I really like the Germantown roll. It's topped with crab and looks like a sheepdog :-) They also serve wine and have a nice little dining room. If you like seafood, you should get the crispy shrimp with mushrooms. It's not really crispy, but just tempura breaded. The shrimp they use are HUGE though! Overall, they're definitely a bit pricey, but again, the quality is good.

There are few chinese restaurants around the area, and after reading the reviews I had to give it a try. We ordered orange beef and general tso's chicken for lunch and was pretty disappointed. They both tasted like cardboard...hard to chew and tough to swallow. I doubt I'll be going back.

  • Richard B.

great service and pretty good food. we initially ordered the general tsao's and orange chicken and the waiter suggested that we try something else since the two share similar sauce flavor profiles (i think i heard that term from top chef haha). we stuck with the orange chicken and ordered the germantown beef as well as chicken lo mein. for apps we just ordered some eggrolls. the eggrolls were not that great. too big and thus too "doughy" and the filling was somewhat bland. the hot mustard that comes on the side was the hottest i've had. i don't have much of a mustache being asian and the few hairs i had were pretty much singed off. we were worried with the eggrolls that our entrees would follow suit in the taste department but they were really good. i especially liked the orange chicken except for when i chewed on a hunk of orange peel. even then that didn't disappoint me as i was glad that they were using honest ingredients. again, the service was excellent and the food overall was very good. will definitely return. we actually went to this place after being disappointed at golden star buffet in gaithersburg. i know you really can't compare between a made-to-order restaurant and a buffet but that buffet place seriously sucks. please refer to my review about that place for further info!

you won't find friendlier service elsewhere. the food is delicious, the restaurant is clean, prices are reasonable. the crab wonton is unbelievable! so good, i almost saved it for dessert! i'm a big fan of tofu dishes, and this place does NOT disappoint. great lunch specials and entrees. a big step up from the typical chinese carry-out (haven't gotten ill once, which is a major win in my book). check it out, you won't be disappointed.

We ate here last night b/c Agro Dolce was too crowded. The waitstaff is very friendly and attentive - constantly refilling the water and making sure we had everything we needed. We got Wonton Soup, Kung Pao Shrimp, Eel Rolls, California Rolls. All were prepared quickly and tasted good. The Kung Pao shrimp was very spicy, in a brown sauce. I'd go back.

Just moved to Clarksburg recently and was in the mood for some tasty Chinese take out. This place doesn't seem like it does too much take-out. It does have a very nice outdoor seating area which isn't common for Chinese restaurants and the interior seems pretty modern. I ordered General Tso's chicken. The flavor was ok. Definitely wasn't the best I ever had, but it filled my craving. It was also pretty pricey at $9. My biggest complaint was the serving size. For $9 I want a good dinner sized portion, but instead I would be hard pressed to be full from this for lunch and I'm a small, 90 pound girl. Will probably give the eat-in a try at some point, but will look for other options.

We recently moved to Clarksburg and were concerned about our new home's proximity to good Chinese takeout. Our concerns were quickly over after we discovered this restaurant at Milestone. They deliver within a 3 mile radius, which fortunately included our neighborhood. Although initially the price may seem discouraging because it is a bit higher than a typical chinese takeout or delivery, their food is very good. It is especially awesome to order for nights we want chinese food and don't want to cook or travel out of the house. We are big fans of their kung pao chicken.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
