meh, not bad if you're looking for your quick fix of Korean. Soups are overrun with tofu. Appetizer pancakes are the bomb. Very tasty and filled with fresh delicious ingredients. I wasn't super impressed with the ribs and beef tips. However, service is exceptional. The staff is pleasant, attentive and accomodating.

Good food. I love here. Not too much service, so I can talk with my friends. ;-)

I was in the mood for Korean food but not willing to drive far for it. We are warmly greeted and we are offered hot tea and water. Though when the tea was served it was served in a cold plastic tumbler. Hey maybe its a recession and they couldnt get tea cups... So here we go. My date and I chose Bul-go gi and short rib meat. They immediately bring out the banchan but they were so stingy with the food especially for the price that we are paying for. After the waitress brings the meat, she fires up the grill and occassionally will come back to flip the meat around...After the meat was cooked...that was the last time we heard from our waitress...till it was time to pay.... We also order the korean pancakes and that was excellent but again they were sooo stingy with the special soy sauce. The food was ok but as the others commented it seemed if you were Korean you recieve better service. The waitress never came back to check on us or even suggest dessert. I would probably not return. This restaurant is very expensive and cheap with the food. I would have done better by going to the Korean Corner in Rockville and take the meat home and making my own banchan.

I actually prefer this Arrirang than the one located in Rockville. Better food, better service, and plus its closer to home. haha. Its actually hidden in a small shopping center off of Clopper, theres a 7-11 on the other corner. This arrirang also has korean bbq while the one in Rockville doesn't. We ordered the kalbi (beef), samgyup sal (pork), haemul panjon (seafood pancake) delish! They brought out dang jjang jigae as a service. I've been here many times and I love their soon doo boo jigae here. It is amazing! Their kalbi dolsot bimbim bap is also yum. I would def recommend this place! Its a little pricer than your Annadale korean places.

Seriously I'm so glad I've discovered a decent Korean place that I don't have to drive all the way to Annandale for. First off, Arirang has some legit soondubu and bibimbap!!! For my seafood soondubu, they certainly did not skimp out on the amount of seafood they put into it, especially the clams. I felt like I was eating clam meat with every spoonful of soup I had, even down to the last spoonful, ha. I only wished that the "extra spicy" could be a bit spicier, but nbd. And as for the bibimbap, it was sizzzzzling hot and came in a really nice big portion! Probably the best looking bibimbap I've seen thus far. If you're feeling some Korean food especially soondubu or bibimbap, and Arirang is closer to you than VA is, definitely, DEFINITELY give this place a go as they have delicious food plus a pretty nice selection for either dish. Although the service was a bit slow, even with not so many customers, the lady who served us was very nice. Oh and though I'm not sure how the Korean BBQ here is (at least not yet ;D ), but considering the quality of the rest of the food here that I do know about, I'm sure it won't be anything too disappointing...hopefully :)

Great Korean food but service was very blah. It took awhile to take our order and the restaurant wasn't that busy. There were a few tables with customers but 2 waitresses doing everything. You could tell they were short staffed because the empty tables hadn't been cleared off. Our waitress brought everything out at once including our appetizer. She never came back to check on us and we had to flag her down for the check. Arirang is one of the few places in MD that has great Korean food. I would go back just for that and overlook the service.
(4)Alice K.
Delicious bibimbap! If you're in the area and craving some bibimbap or tofu soup, go here! Don't go here if you're near VA though, restaurants there are better and cheaper. Service is more casual/slow but that's fine if you're not in a hurry. Their side dishes are pretty good and if there aren't that many people around and you're getting boxes to take home leftovers, they may ask if you want a refill of the side dishes to bring home. Small area in a small shopping center- I wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't yelp it! Don't come here for korean bbq, it's expensive and not good.

The nephew had an urge for something Korean-spicy-yet-tasty .... jjambbong! The teen rarely asks for any heat-related combo but he sighed for a meal that reminded him of his grandma (rip mom). Luckily we didn't have to search too far around BroS' neck-o-the-woods. Thumbs up for offering appropriate k-levels of tasty spice in G-town. Mom's usual medicinal craving during cold nights was jjambbong. Generally speaking, it's a spicy red noodle soup w/stuff in it. I know....I'm good w/words keekee :p AG (Arirang/G-town) had multiple versions of jjambbong to suit most picky bodies. The nephew eyed the one w/noodles. They also throw in random goodies from the sea. I took a pic of the menu description - you're welcome. He was very happy that the staff dropped by often to refill his ice water cup. Maaaybe it's due to his vocal slurp/sniffage w/a frequent comment of "hot" every other minute lol. BroS opted for spicy cod soup which was my dad's fave back in the day (rip dad). Nice meaty flesh laddering up one another. Surprisingly I took a u-turn from the spicy eats and veered towards the beef jjajangmyun. Very cool how they served the bouncy noodles separately from the jjajang sauce. You control the volume of the sauce. Thanks. The coated noodles peaked well w/the appropriate old pickled fermented aging radish kimchi banchan. We got a second helping of the aging radish kimchi *yes* Service gradually blossomed if you will. Seemed they're more timid than short at the genesis of the dine-in then they're cracking a grin to full-blown smiles. That's the story of my Korean restaurant experiences. If you can find them then complete the journey w/some comforting k-comestibles.

The food is as always good. However, as most other people have commented, unless you are Korean or speak the language, they tend to be a tad more rude or brisk or just come off annoyed when people ask questions about the menu that they don't understand re: the menu items. We've been there a couple times since the reopening and as always the seafood pancake was perfect and the banchan plentiful and delicious. They don't cook the BBQ table side unless you order more than one order of meat apparently. I'll keep coming back here, but I wish they would hire more staff or staff that is bilingual in English and Korean. Communication becomes a bit hard. Also take better care when cleaning the table before guiding the customers to sit there.
(3)Julia L.
This is one of my favorite Korean restaurants in the area. I have been there many times, and was never disappointed. The portion is large, so there is always left over. I loved their appetizer kimchi dishes. The dishes from the BBQ tables are great as well. Overall, a great authentic Korean place to eat!
(4)Cai K.
Called today (March 26) and they are open again!! Renovated (they now have a HD TV in the restaurant) and still the same great food!
(4)John H.
Airirang was friendly and very tasty. Great galbi, seafood pancake, fried dumplings, and jap chae. Super friendly ladies took good care of us and the boys. Next time we will branch out and try a few new things but the standard dishes were solid and as good as anything I've had in Annandale or 32nd St in NYC. Will definitely be back often.
(4)yongbong C.
I didn't expect so much but their Gam ja tang is very very good! Please try it!

Probably the worst service I have ever received at a Korean restaurant -- and for the record, I am Korean. I have never been discriminated like this by people from my own culture. I was truly astonished. I came here with a group of my non-Korean friends, so I translated and ordered/asked for everything. The food was honestly not great, I've had better Korean food/BBQ, plus it was expensive. The BBQ and banchan took extremely long to come out and tasted mediocre. They barely checked our table, I had to cook everything myself for a total of 6 people, so I barely had time to eat. We also had to constantly flag them down to ask for more water, more of this, more of that, you get the point. After we were done eating, my friend asks for the check and the lady comes back and hands it to me commenting, "It's expensive," and walks away. Um... I wasn't sure how to even take that comment. They claimed they were "busy" and apologized when we were getting up to leave, but I don't think having four tables full in the whole restaurant would be considered "busy" especially when they were checking on other tables and cooking for other tables besides ours. Oh?? Lo and behold, they were Korean! And I hate to say this, but I'm gonna have to agree with other people who have mentioned receiving bad service if you/your party isn't Korean, which is a damn shame. I'm sure I would have a completely different experience if I came here with my family instead rather than friends, but nope sorry not going back.
(1)Tanya C.
This is a review by my boyfriend. After and during his dinner trip, he was so pissed off that he wanted to post a review on Yelp. The food was average, but decent for here. The worst part was the service. After our party came in, and waited to be seated, the host-hostess sat 3 parties before us. No service whatsoever and the banchan did not come until after we have already started eating. Other tables that ordered after us, got there food before us, and they hardly checked on our table. Worst of all when we went to pay, they told us how much to tip. Definately a bad experience. It seems if your korean you get better service but if your not, you should stay away.

This Korean restaurant is sort of hidden in the corner of the street. It might not look like much, and it looks a little cramped on the inside, but the food is very good! I've been here several times with my family and each time, the food was delicious and service was good. So, a general overview of our experience here. Right when we walked in the door, we were greeted by the waitresses and they showed us to our seats immediately (unless it's a packed house around dinnertime, in which we would have to wait for several minutes for a free table). Within seconds, they serve us water and other beverages (hot tea). After a few minutes of perusing the menu, a waitress comes over and asked if we are ready to order. We ordered our food, and within a minute, she laid out the "banchan" (side dishes) - I counted 7-9 different side dishes (wow). Within 10 minutes (give or take a few depending on the complexity of the dish), our food came out. I've ordered the "sukuh soondooboo jigae" (soft tofu stew with seafood and beef), "dol sot bibimbop" (hot version of bibimbop served in a very hot clay rice bowl), and "ddukguk" (Korean rice cake stew). Everything was extremely good except the "ddukguk," which was a little bland compared to those from other Korean restaurants. The "sukuh doondooboo jigae" was excellent. I believe this restaurant's soft tofu stews are among the best I've had (and I tried these from MANY Korean restaurants). The "dol sot bibimbop" was also very good. I have yet to try other dishes, but from the three I had, I can say this is a very decent Korean restaurant in the Gaithersburg/Germantown area. From looking at their menu, this restaurant offers a wide range of dishes, including "pajun" (Korean pancakes), "bulgogi" (marinated barbecue beef), "galbi" (marinated beef short ribs), "den jang chi ge" (miso stew with tofu, beef, zucchini, onion, and green chili), and more. If you want some Korean food and are in the area, definitely try this place out.
(4)Scarlette T.
they are closed on tuesdays! argh! this is not my first korean restaurant where i arrived around 7pm, FAMISHED, looking for some good korean food AND THEY ARE CLOSED. PLEASE UPDATE THE INFO!!!! ok so service is really great, friendly, nice, attentive. food is pricey and nothing to write home about. meat quality average (the kalbi was tough) and the japchae is basically noodles cooked in bulgogi marinade. but the portion is decent. taste: not bad but nothing memorable either. will try them again later because they're so nice. maybe whoever was cooking had an off day.
(2)Barry S.
My korean tailor actually recommended this joint to me. As with most korean BBQ's ... this place was expensive ... but instead the food wasn't that tasty and they only cooked one meat in front of us. Sure, the bulgogi was good as was the kimshee but nothing else was notable. I'm a bit ... what is the word ... "whiteamerican" ... so maybe I was missing something ... but I wasn't impressed.
(2)S. O.
I ordered the spicy seafood soup. Eh, it was ok. It wasn't spicy though. This is a decent alternative if you're in the Germantown area and you don't want to drive all the way to Rockville for Lighthouse Tofu. Service was really slow...
(3)Janet C.
The first time I ate here I walked in and ordered carry out . Beef fried rice. It was delicious. Maybe a year later I ate in with a friend. The place was humid and the table was sticky. It didn't feel clean. I notice people who came in after we ordered got there food first. . Maybe they were related or regulars or you just have to speak the right language. BTW the food was good. Speaking of languages I called one day to order that beef fried rice and the lady on the phone didn't understand a word I was saying ! So I hung up . So the food is good and the service is bad and the best Korean places to eat are in Wheaton Md and Virginia.

Great food but very bad service!!!!!

What an interesting little place! Unlike many of the above reviewers that placed high ratings, I am actualy white. And that means culturally clueless. Luckily for me, an asian friend took me along for a midday snack... Now we come in, and it looks kinda shady. The fact that not a single (literally) employee speaks english might be a deterrent as well, but they try their best to understand (hint: use universal sign language) and are very friendly. Even to white guys like me =) Anyway, we sat down and both ordered some spicy tofu with beef. I was grumbling a little about the price (at a little bit less than 10 bucks) until... A whole array of appetizers show up! OMG FACE =O I really liked the potatoes (ok, I'm white jeez), the seaweed, the... everything. Although admittedly the rice jelly was a bit meh. Then came the STEAMING bowl of tofu soup. They gave us raw eggs with the appetizers, and my friend explained why: if you dump the raw egg in there, it will cook in just a couple of seconds! Cool! It was mmm-good when mixed in with the rice, but what makes this 5 stars, and not 4 is that it really felt authentic. I felt proud that I was not part of the group of "White Americans" behind us that was asking for fried rice. Great food, very affordable when you factor in the appetizers.
(5)Sean P.
lunch menu primarily soups, no Galbi. The two waitresses seemed to be more friendly to native Koreans. I was not treated the same, though it may be because their english was very poor and they didn't feel comfortable interacting with me. Never came to check to see how food was or refill water. I did think the food was pretty good, though the service was poor.

I cannot believe I forgot to review this restaurant. This restaurant is an example of what most korean restaurants strive to attain the highest in quality and service. There is a noticeable difference from the restaurant decor to those side dishes - the banchan, the food and the service. The waitresses are there are the nicest, to me at least, always polite always asking if I wanted more banchan or water. When I stacked the plates up at the end the waitress was so surprised she said thanks! Anyhow, I been here multiple times and each time I was impressed especially with the banchan. Even during lunch, I was served 7 banchans. You can tell homemade kimchi from the store bought ones. Theirs were excellent. The spicy pickled radishes are really good as well. I guess what I am trying to get at is they are very good with adjusting the taste of the pickling. There was a salad with a sesame dressing which had a such good flavor I ate all my veges. They also don't skim on serving the spicy anchovies and fish cake. The first things that went were all the banchans. The waitress was about to give me more when I told her I just didn't want to let any go to waste cos they were all so good. As for entrees, I have tried many of the tofu casseroles, the spicy seafood noodles Jaembong etc. For something different, one that caught my eye was the seafood hotstone bibim bap. The stoneware bowl came out with rice and seafood piling to the top!! It's so aromatic and the sizzling of the rice was just amazing. I love the crunchiness of the rice especially. There was shrimp, octopus, mussels, clams and oyster. I love this dish, it was slightly drizzled in a sweet brown sauce like a teriyaki probably and I mixed in the hot sauce as well. I really appreciate the quality and service of the arirang restaurants. Would love to go back for the BBQ sometime.

Good food. Ok service. Love the jampong :-)))
(4)Muriel H.
I was craving Korean bbq so I stopped in here on my way home. The menu is really hard to understand mainly because its in Korean of course. I love galbi and with the hostesses help I ordered an entree, takeout, that was galbi with veggies. I had rice on the side and it also came with kimchi and some other cold, pickled, veggie side. I tried the kimchi which i loved and the other veggie but I was not a fan. I ate the rice and galbi with the veggies (warm) and added the red sauce that they added. It was pretty good! The flavor was different from what I expected. I liked that it was a pretty healthy & balanced dish & want to go back for some more of their items soon!

We tried this place last week because a friend told me their hot stone pot is good. But we will never go again. The seafood pancake tasted bad and was like leftovers. The fresh one would neve be that hard. My kids were hungry but they refused to have a second bite on it. My stone pot is OK. A soft tofu seafood soup had some clam meats with sand in them. Service was poor. When we asked the waitress what's her recommendations she shrugged and said 'nothing'. We will not recommend this place to anyone.

***** This was my first, and last time eating at this establishment. ***** Someone lately turned me onto Japchae. Being that I have tried it in multiple places in D.C. as well as an amazing version in rockville, i opted to try something a little closer to home today. I called ahead and asked if they carried japchae. The lady said yes, and that it came with beef (thought it typically had pork but w/e) for roughly $12.99. I ordered this and also Kimchi. Now she said Kimchi doesn't come with it, even though I asked for a side of it, and after some confusion I just said forget it. Upon arriving I waited about 3-4 min while 1 employee waited / talked to a table, and another cleaned glasses in what I think is their kitchen entrance or carry out station, not really sure. I asked if it was possible for an extra side of kimchi as I love it so much. After a minute she said she gave me some for free, and next time would charge. I told her I don't care about the charge, as I don't mind paying for something that I want. After 3 minutes of arguing in another language between the 2 I said just forget it, not a big deal. Total came to $13.70 so I gave her $20.75. She hands me back $3.05. Um, sorry but no. 2 minutes later and a headache she realized and corrected the change. FOOD: Japchae - Honestly I have no clue what they gave me. The noodles were a little overcooked, but SLATHERED with some oily sauce. All I could taste was a lip vibrating amount of salt from soy, and stomach curdling sugar sweetness. Mixed in was raw cabbage and green onions and dry beef. When I was handed the package it felt heavy, and that left me happy leaving. I had no idea it was due to the amount of oil and sauce on it. I took 1 1/2 bites and just couldn't do it. Disgusting. Kimchi - I may be a born and bread american born in this area, but I grew up my whole life eating home cooking, or asian foods. Korean and Japanese salads / sides have been one of my favorite things my whole life. This kimchi was a DISGRACE. 100% RAW unsalted, uncured cabbage, with a ton of dry paste mixed into it which had next to no flavor due to the fact it has zero fermentation. I have had 1000 variants of kimchi and almost all have similar qualities. This was by far the worst, most raw, horrific kimchi experience I've ever had. I will not be returning, and what is most sad about this is the fact in the picture above the Japchae looks amazing, almost clear in color with light seasoning. I guess you can't post a picture here but I will post the 2 of todays meal, of which you can see look NOTHING like the previous picture.

Not bad. It's no Annandale, VA (aka little Korea)...but it was not bad. I have not found any real good Korean food in Maryland...yet. They do need to clean up this place and do some remodeling. Staff was friendly and understood English. I would go there again if in Maryland but will not seek this place out.
(3)Yena S.
Though Arirang is a traditional Korean BBQ/Soondubu house, they recently started serving Joonghwa-yori, which is like a Korean interpretation of Chinese-Korean fusion cuisine. If you're a fan of Jja-jang-myun, Jjampong, Tangsooyook, or Kkanpoongi, give it a try. The servers are friendly, fast, and efficient. And the food is great overall. No longer need to go to Lotte food court to satisfy my Jjajangmyun cravings! The Soondubu is also great-- if you've been to the Arirang on Gude Dr to try it! I always get the Suk-uh Soondubu, a mix of beef and seafood together.

We were trying to find a place for Korean barbeque and called this place around 8:30 pm to see if they were open and whether we could do barbeque. They said yes to both. We got there about 9:10. They're open until 10:00pm on Wednesdays. The place looks ok inside and out. It's not anyplace where you would really see it driving by. To start, they brought hot tea to my wife and mom-in-law and gave me iced tea. Ok, I'm a white guy. When we go to Asian places we often laugh at the fork that I get when nobody else does. But then I also get chopsticks. Don't decide what I want for me. It's a little offensive. So anyway, we ordered bulgogi and were told that they would only cook that in the kitchen; the barbeque was limited to three or so other items on the menu. Basically, the choice was really expensive meat or bacon. That was my second problem with this place. If you have a picture of raw meat on your menu and I'm sitting at a barbeque table in a Korean restaurant, you better let me cook it at my table! So ok, we skip the barbeque, which means that we need a minute to replan what we want. When we were not ordering fast enough we were told that we needed to get our order in because the kitchen was closing. It was late, I understand, so we rushed and ordered bibimbap for me and my mom-in-law and my wife ordered a spicy cod, vegetable, tofu soup thing. Daughter had dumplings. The food came, and it was all sizzly and bubbly, and looked good. The bibimbap turned out to be bibimbigpileofonion. Maybe this is my personal problem (it is), but I don't think of onion as a real vegetable. The vegetable in the bowl was more than half onion with a bit of cabbage and a few carrot slivers. I picked out the onion, gave the onion to my mom-in-law, and then three Korean people came in and were greeted rather warmly. Since we had already been served our food and it was almost a half hour after we were told that the kitchen was closing, I am annoyed that that did not turn out to be the case for Korean people. And this is the third thing that I have a problem with. I guess it's ok if you prefer to take care of people who speak your language and share your culture. Just please don't be so blatant about it. I don't recommend this place.
(1)Marla J.
I have tried this place a couple of times since I almost always give a restaurant a second chance if the first time sucked. Unfortunately my second chance for this restaurant just served to reinforce what I learned on my first visit. I love Korean BBQ places but the food here is merely OK, and a bit pricey. What really killed it for me was that the service was horrible. My friend and I both felt discriminated against in that restaurant. We aren't Korean and we sat there and watched Korean customers get excellent service while got no service both times.
(1)Justin M.
I came here for a lunch break on a whim. Turned out to be one of the best lunch breaks I've had in a while. Food was great, service was friendly and the place was clean and looked nice. I had the Haemul Pajeon (seafood pancake) and the kimchi jiigae. I'll be back!
(5)Manny P.
Thanks for the update Cai, I hope you're right, I really liked the service there. I'll be looking forward to March.

This is the first time having Bulgoki at this restaurant and it was delish!! Even the side dishes were great! The only draw back was that I was a little stumped on the jelly-like side dish and it didn't taste like anything. I looked it up and its called "mung jelly" The consistency was awkward and weird lol! Wasn't sure how to eat it... I will go here again and would like to try other dishes as I LOVE Asian cuisine! Open to other Korean dish recommendations... :o)
(5)Marco C.
We used to go to the one off Gude and since they opened here, we come to this one. They still serve the best seafood pancake I've had and they have great soondubu. So good! Love their stone pot rice. Re: the service, I have noticed Koreans getting better service than non-Koreans at other Korean establishments but we didn't notice it here too much. They're pretty friendly to us.
(4)D W.
How does a nice Korean restaurant make bad kimchi? Not make-you-sick bad, but doesn't-taste-good bad. The place is okay for a craving when choices are limited in the area, but it isn't great. A family member found hair in food recently. Seriously, what's with restaurants and hair in food? I really want this place to do well. The decor's nice, and I love Korean food. But they seriously need help on some of the recipes of their dishes (which they charge premium prices). I remember having bibimbap that used fried rice (as opposed to white). It was so greasy-- if I'd wanted Chinese food, I would have gotten that for a lot cheaper. Seriously, Arirang, I really want to like you. Managers / chefs, consider going down to Annandale and getting some inspiration there. You have been empty the last couple of times I went, and I'd like for you to do well with great-- okay we'll settle for good-- food.

If I can give this restaurant no stars I would because that was how horrible our experience was at this establishment. In all my life I have never experienced discrimination as I did when I was here. Even when I stayed in West Virginia in a town predominantly Caucasian with a McDonald that hung a confederate flag, I was never treated unkindly or unjust. This restaurant should be shut down as bigotry should not be tolerated. When my husband and I along with our two kids first arrived the place was empty. There was a couple sitting at another table and had just finished their meal but besides from them and us the whole place was empty. A waitress immediately seated us at a table near the bathroom. I thought it was rather odd considering there were so many empty tables around but I didn't object (being Asian, I was taught to respect my elders). So we sat down to order out food. We got the galbi, bulgogi, seafood pancake, and fried dumplings. The reason why we went for Korean food that night was because we wanted to enjoy the experience of having some food cooked at our table. Boy, did we miss out on that! The waitress who barely spoke any English talked to another waitress (not sure if she was the owner or supervisor) in Korean then came back to us to tell us the "kitchen was closed" and couldn't make the galbi and bulgogi. This is "lost in translation" big time! We had no idea what she was talking about so proceeded with a series of guessing games. For some reason still unknown to us we realized she meant that the meats could not be cooked at the table. It had to be cooked by their kitchen staff. Weird but ok, we decided to go forward with the meals. Now at this point we were the ONLY one there. I guess since we were the only one there they didn't want to be bothered with cleaning the burner at our table...probably less work to have it cooked in the kitchen. Anyway, a little while later a Korean family came in and boy, did things go from bad to worse. They proceeded to take the family's order and started neglecting us. First they didn't bring the rice out until we asked for it then they didn't bring the lettuce for our meat dish til we asked for that (mind you they never came to refill our water or condiments). Then we noticed the other family had ordered some meats to be cooked on the burner at their table and guess what? Their meats were cooked on the burner at their table!!!! Why did they tell us it couldn't be done when it could and did! We noticed the extra special care and attention they gave to that other family but not to us. I thought that maybe they knew that family but when other Korean families started rolling and in getting the same TLC treatment, I knew something was off. To further our distasteful experience, when we asked for our check, which they were really quick to deliver, they practically threw the check at us and walked away to another table. I can understand if they're busy but that's no way to treat customers. Even after we paid for our food and got up to leave, no one said thank you or good bye which is customary at most restaurants. We were appalled by their behavior! I could not believe that discrimination still exists and at an establishment that is opened to the public!!! I will never go here again. Did I mention that for $28.95 all we got was two strips of short ribs??? The bill came out to be close to $100 for just those four items!!! I'm insulted and offended!!! Completely appalled by their price tag and discrimination. Don't come here unless you're willing to put up with their mistreatment.
