Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

My husband and I were in the mood for Mexican last night, but neither of us felt like going to our usual spot, Mi Rancho. We have been so disappointed with the quality of the food there and the ever-rising prices. So, after searching Yelp and reading the reviews for Azteca, we decided to give it a try. I am so happy we found this place! The food was excellent and the prices were totally reasonable. My husband had a few beers and I had two large Sangrias. We had the queso with sausage for appetizer and then we each had enchiladas for our main course. Everything was delicious! We both loved it. I would give this place 5 stars, but I wasn't totally impressed with the atmosphere. We sat outside and it was nice, but the inside was a bit plain and not very comfortable looking. Maybe, it was because the place was empty, I'm not sure, but that's the only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. I love this place!

Watched the game I wanted to on BeIN Sports & had 2 beers wit my tasty fish tacos for under $20. I'll be back.

The employees are very nice. I have been a loyal customer since they opened. You can't go wrong with the $5.95 lunch combos (Monday to Friday, 11am-2pm). Unlike some other Mexican food joints in the area, ABI has well seasoned food. I love their pupusas and enchiladas the most, and the costilla asada is also very good. I will continue to support this restaurant in the hopes it remains.

The wife and I went last night on the strength of the reviews. Despite getting there at 6:30 and happy hour running until 7, we didn't get any alcohol - but beers under $3 and margaritas for $4 are great deals. The chips provided were warm and crispy and the salsa was delicious too. We had 2 pupusas as an appetizer, one with cheese and one with pork - they were really delicious. For main I had the sizzlin' steak fajitas and they were excellent - only complaint is I wish there were 1 or 2 more tortillas provided, but this is a common theme at restaurants with fajitas I have found. My wife's chicken dish had a ton of food and she really enjoyed it too, I forget the name of it though. Was fairly quiet here for a Friday night before 8pm, maybe they get busier after 8. Despite this, the service could have been a little more attentive. There were times when we waited a long time between server visits and then at times 3 servers came to assist us within a few minutes so they seem a little disorganized in that respect - although always polite and friendly. Also not sure if the karaoke is every night and it was mostly bearable, but towards the end of our visit we were hoping he was going to stop - purely because it became more and more difficult to have a conversation! So overall excellent food and good prices, just need to improve the service a little and avoid karaoke night (if possible!). We will definitely return!

We came here late Saturday night (for the first time), hungry as a bear. We said lets order take out and go back home. The moment we walked through the door we got a very warm welcome by Nelly. Worry free, she told us to sit down and order as we pleased and ended up, very easily, convincing us to stay and eat in. The best most personable experience I've ever had at a restaurant. By far Nelly made the entire experience enjoyable. She was very attentive and knew how to make you feel important. The food was quickly served and it was delicious. We ordered Lomo Saltado w/o rice & fries. Substituted the fries for yuca instead. Great food. We will absolutely come back to this spot. It's a gem within itself. The customer service was impeccable and the food was tasty. You won't be disappointed.

If you're looking for good Mexican food in the area, this is the spot. I used to go to Mi Rancho but then we found a very long unclaimed hair in our salsa and vowed never to return. ABI is clean, well decorated and has friendly staff. Like others have noted, the restaurant is pretty empty but several guest were in and out during my wait for takeout. Nelly was great and assisted us in ordering the combination fajitas (chicken and shrimp) and the beef and cheese enchiladas. We had water and salsa during the wait and Nelly checked in on us a few times. After about fifteen minutes our orders were presented and everything came out just as we ordered. I also want to note that I requested a few extra condiments and was not charged anything extra. :-) The food was great and this will be my go to for Mexican in the future. ABI will not disappoint!

This place is horrible. We came on a Saturday night and the room was almost empty. And when the foods were served, we were not surprised any more. Neither the quantity nor the quality worth the 1 star given here. Please avoid this place. I am very unhappy with it.

My wife and I went here recently...the food was good, and the service was top notch. We will be back soon.

hello my beautiful people ...abi azteca now has the best food special in the area ...i was stopping to let you know that ...also great happy hour...nelly

Good, inexpensive tex-mex and Salvadorian dishes, friendly, attentive staff, and great happy hour eats and drinks, with a full-bar backing the big menu. Yeah, baby!
(4)Ben W.
Friendly atmosphere, and good food and drinks. Went for my wife's birthday, and she was very happy with the margaritas and fajita. I had a chiccarrone burrito, which was just ok. They had a lively bar scene with a good mix of people. Would definitely go again.

Went for Cinco de Mayo. Great happy hour margaritas always; had the special= mole chicken, was sooo tasty. Good salsa, chips, and guac too. Great friendly service too.

Had a great experience here with a large crowd and quite a few young children. The service was very attentive and accommodating, friendly and quickly responsive. The food was very good too - definitely on par with and maybe better than fancier Central American places we have been to in the area, with a lot of variety, including some meat dishes you can't find on the menu at the "gringo" places. My only hesitation in providing 4 stars was that it took a really long time for the food to come out. That may have been because we were a large party, but there were only 3 or 4 other tables at the time we were there. We will definitely be back and recommend families in particular looking for a good regular Mexican / Salvadoran spot. Also - even though the address is on Middlebrook, it's easier to find if you enter the shopping center from 355.

My husband and I (and another couple that lives nearby) have been searching for a great Mexican restaurant in the area for years. We used to go to one in Rockville but it shut down. Since then the search has continued (although truthfully the one that closed down was a bit too 'stuffy' for me). We had passed this restaurant numerous times and didn't know what to think of the small little place in the corner of the plaza. However, I finally looked up the reviews and saw the positive feedback they were getting and decided to give it a try sometime in 2014. We've been going here ever since! This place is a GREAT local spot; a 'hole-in-the-wall' if you will (I believe they have one other location somewhere else). This is exactly the kind of Mexican restaurant we've been looking for. The food is delicious! We've had a range of enchiladas, tacos, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, guacamole, margaritas, and a few other food items that I can't remember. I have not be disappointed with any of our visits. I will say that I'm surprised it is as empty as it is when we go - but we typically go earlier in the dinner hour and sometimes catch the end of happy hour. We have never gone when it was karaoke (it's just not my thing), but if it is your thing they have it available later in the evening. I hope this place never goes away - I don't want to ever have to go back to any of the big chain restaurants in the area, they just don't measure up!

Delicious Mexican food at a great price. Moreover, it was immediately apparent, even from the relatively brief time we spent there, that there's not so much of the anomie that typically clings to small restaurants. People talked to each other... people saw each other! When they offered to help me carry my order out to my car (it was a lot of food), it didn't feel like they were obeying a corporate script. It really felt like they wanted to help.

This place is worth a visit. Hardly ever packed, never a line, always friendly service and decent texmex food. We've been here 5 times and Yolanda is almost always our server....if there is some sort of local service worker award, she should be nominated. In short, pretty good food and unbelievable service.
(4)Kent K.
The food has been consistently good over at least a dozen visits. Prices range from inexpensive to cheap. Pork and cheese pupusas, shrimp enchiladas, black beans & rice, sweet corn tamales, and, if they are serving it, red snapper with mushroom sauce are all great. Very friendly service. Some of the best margaritas I have had, and they are marked down during happy hour.
(4)C J.
The margherita was terrific. The papusa was really good. And the salsa just the right amount of kick. The place was pretty quiet because it was early on a Monday. But the staff seemed a little peeved we didn't order more food. We just weren't hungry. We probably will go back though.

I've been a happy customer of this place for a while. The food is always great, speedy service, and great drinks. They have a good selection of typical Mexican and Central American cuisine... my husband normally has (inhales) fajitas, I get steak and we ask for a side of casamiento (mixed rice and black beans). Good stuff! They have live music on the weekends and it gets packed but it's worth it waiting on a table. The restaurant itself is very cozy and the seating is bit outdated (why they got a 4 out of 5) but the murals and outside seating is very nice. Yolanda normally tends to our table and she's the biggest sweetheart!

Overall this place is terrible. This is not authentic Mexican food. The taste is not to great. The only thing I found good was their beans. Their horchata tasted powdery. Their tacos tasted like they went on a run to Taco Bell and served it to their customers. The place was decent in cleanliness but the bathroom was gross. The service was ok but the waitress only came around like once or twice during the time I was there and the place was dead. Just a horrible experience. -Breakdown- Food 1/10 Cleanliness 5/10 Service 6/10 Overall 12/30
(2)Massiel G.
This place okay I really like the nachos but the food it's okay not the best. This place always empty. The waiter are always really nice and friendly. I really didn't like the rice and the chicken and meat very bland.
(3)Deborah G.
Loved it. Great food. Loud. They do karaoke. Kind of annoying. But the food is delicious. And great service.
(5)Steven F.
We had a great experience the last two visits. The food is very good, authentic, and reasonable, and has replaced Mi Rancho as our go to spot for good Mexican food. Our waitress on our visit last Friday was Nelly, who was exceptional. Our only reason for not awarding five stars is that it takes longer than most restaurants for the kitchen to prepare the food. However, it is also a good excuse to have another margarita!

Great food, but the staff is racist, and short-sighted. I'd give it 5 stars, but the prejudiced attitude and actions of the staff there gave me indigestion. Want to read more? I'll tell you exactly how to spot their tactics, but it's better if you have a Spanish speaker in your group, so you'll know what they're saying and doing. So, I've visited that restaurant about fairly often; about 10 times/year on average. I went there because the food is reasonably priced, it tastes great, and it's conveniently located. However, the last 2 times, there were unusual billing practices--for example, charging the 18% gratuity for a party of 3 on a $40 ticket. This most recent instance (today), I brought my wife and 2 kids for a nice Saturday lunch. The staff seemed friendly enough, but again the ticket had the gratuity added in for a party of 4 and $45. Unlike me, my wife speaks fluent Spanish and does not like unexplained expenses. She talked to the waitresses and FIRST, they told her that's their restaurant's policy. I thought that was odd because it isn't written down anywhere and the usual trigger for automatic gratuity is a party of 6 and over $50 ticket. When she called them out on that, their SECOND excuse was that it was their standard policy to write the gratuity in as part of the ticket. I was hearing and understanding bits and pieces of this exchange, and my wife pointed out that the couple seated next to us paid with a card and left a cash tip. Then they fell back on their THIRD excuse, which was the worst and most offensive: the wait staff at Abi Azteca in Germantown, Maryland said that they calculated an 18% gratuity, not on the amount of the ticket, not on the size of the party -- as both of those notions had been debunked -- they charged me because they said I am black, and black people don't tip. Some irrelevant background on me is that, yes, I'm black. And I'm also a fairly big tipper. We always tip more than 20% because I used to work in a restaurant in Brooklyn, NY and I know how tough it can be. But for me, it never got to the point where I was willing to steal from customers because of some race-based stereotype. The waitresses would not say this to me... instead they chose to say it to my wife in Spanish and in hushed tones. I think it's time for some daylight in Abi Azteca. People, you need to examine your checks when you go there and challenge anything that looks out of the ordinary. I suspect they have been doing this for some time. Are they really racist? I don't know, but they based their attempted theft on racist beliefs. So if you plan on eating there, you have to wonder what creative excuse they will use to try to get an extra $5 or $10 from you. Too bad, because my tip would have been much more than the $7.50 they got, and they lost a family. Please post if this has happened to you as well. Sunlight is the best disinfectant!

Very friendly service, great food and an affordable price. What more can anyone ask for? Love, Love this place

Ate there last night the staff was great and nice. The food was pretty good. The chicken fajita just needed some more seasoning and the tamale sweet corn cake was a little dry but descent. I will go back.

Great food and drinks! Had dinner with friends. All of the food was outstanding. You must try this place!

Hey Germantown/Clarksburg/Gaithersburg--are you looking for authentic Mexican fare at a fair price? Look no more...I lived in Latin America for 5 years, and had yet to find a reasonably priced, delicious authentic Mexican restaurant. Great service, great food and a nice and clean atmosphere. They take pride in their preparation...delicious chips and salsa on the house and a really great menu. Gringo? Take a chance...Latino...I think it will live up to your expectations! Deliciosa!
(5)Molly G.
Enchiladas just like my mama's! Friendly service, low prices and fresh beans that they make onsite. Try it now.

This was one of the worst food experiences. First the orders were mixed up..not a big deal. The food was not fresh, frozen and had no taist to it..flavorless. Not a good food experiences at all. Bummer...

ABI Azteca Grill & Bar! Oh yeahhh, 4-stars, I AM a fan! Coming from California, the standard for Mexican food is not something that is easily met around the Virginia / DC area. We found this lovely eatery on our way to PA for a short trip, and boy were we NOT disappointed! The environment was nice, light but not overwhelming cultural music. Bar, lighting, paintings on the wall, all definitely gave the right impression to the customer. A quick critique: They seemed to want to offer a little of everything possible, in terms of Mexican food. While this may be appealing to most, I found it overwhelming to decide on what to order.. There are simply TOO MANY options (I would estimate maybe 35-45+ dishes). Their chips and salsa were great! Definitely homemade chips, delicious, and salsa had a bit of a light kick (I can't take a lot of spicy food, unfortunately) We also ordered a side of guacamole, which was great, but a bit under-salted and probably would be great with a bit of cilantro. Still cant' beat California Haas Avocados, but i'll take what I can get on the East Coast. I personally had so many things I was considering, but ultimately settled with the Taco Al Carbon (I have a horrible memory, I think this was the item's name). Came with two tacos, I asked for 1 chicken, 1 steak. Side of Guacamole that came with the soft tacos. All in all, the flavors, environment, and service were well above expectations.I would definitely recommend ABI Azteca Grill & Bar to others who are in the local area, seeking tasty, authentic Mexican food! Well done ABI Azteca! 4-stars, well deserved!

We went for on a weekday for lunch and the place was awkwardly empty as usual. We had called the day before to let them know we had a party of 15 coming. On the day-of there was ONE person working the dining room and ONE cook. Plus she did not know what she was doing and was clearly annoyed so it took a good 2+ hours to finish lunch. Food came out one plate at a time and people were done eating by the time others dishes came out. The food itself is just OK. I've had better at chains like Uncle Julios and Guapos. They charge you for EVERYTHING; a dollop of sour cream? an extra $1. Some more tortillas? an extra $1.10 (oh and they were STORE BOUGHT tortillas!) Overall, just not a good experience. It's a dingy/drab dining room that would match cheap authentic eats, but instead its just meh-quality generic and way overpriced.

Not very busy restaurant so we received prompt service when we arrived with the complimentary chips and salsa which were okay - not as great as described in other reviews. I shared combo fajitas with my hubby, it was not worth the price of $18.95. Plus it only came with 3 tortillas - request for additional tortillas costs extra. Appreciated that there was a grilled chicken kids meal option with rice and beans that my child enjoyed. Will not be going out of our way to return.
(3)Bri L.
Overall, I was very disappointed. The salsa was very runny, and basically tasted like onions. The queso dip was more like Velveeta. Everything was sub par, in my opinion. I won't be going back.

North MoCo is filled with Tex-Mex/Central American restaurants, and with so many options, I've becomed spoiled. My standards are exceptionally high because I'm hispanic myself. This place is a little different. I'm amazed it's almost empty every time I go in. For a lack of a better word, this place is 'cute' haha. It has the stereotypical Mexican restaurant decor, but there are these wonderful rural landscape murals all over the walls. Every time I've gotten drunk here I end up just getting lost in them lol. Its never busy here so you never will have the problem of it being loud or not getting a good table. The first time I went in with my girlfriend last fall, we requested to sit outside because they have a little patio section and it was warm outside. They didn't have any tables set up and we were the only ones there but the waitress had no problem about it at all! She very pleasantly set it up and served us [I wish I could remember her name! She was super sweet]. This place has my favorite kind of tortilla chips; they're just slightly thinner than you usually get at places. Just a slither thicker than Rio Grande's at The Rio [which are too thin and grossly overfried there]. Get an order of guacamole if you come here! Maybe I'm used to paying upthebutt at restaurants for guacamole [avocados are expensive, after all] but I swear to god I've never beed to a restaurant that gives you such a large portion for only $4, its awesome. So I'm Salvadorian and am really picky about my pupusas. You have nothing to fear here however. So good and so cheap. I come here all the time and buy 5 for $10 with tax and it feeds me for like 2 whole days after. The SO and I have tried probably over 2 dozen different things here throughout the times we've dined, but if I had to suggest one thing I would have to say: The 'surf n turf special'. It might change periodically but for a couple months now its been basically this lobster and fajita special for $25. It's incredible and definitely enough to split.
(5)Lynn G.
We found this place by accident, while lamenting the lack of good Mexican food in our neighborhood. We have favorite places in Florida and NY but not home! That has now changed! The food was great, the staff was helpful, and we can't wait to go back!! How wonderful to have a GREAT Mexican place nearby, the fish tacos were excellent as were the drinks!!
(4)BB S.
Great Central American/South American food! Fresh! I loved that the rice was the thick grain and not the same ole same ole one can get at run of the mill tex-mex places. I had the ABI fajitas yummy! Even the bathrooms were very neat! (that's what gave it 5 stars to me!) It's out neighborhood go-to place, now. Thanks, Yolanda for such friendly service, too!
(5)Molly F.
This place is alright. Salsa is terrible, It tasted like watered down tomato soup with chopped onions. Yuck! I'm vegetarian and they only had a couple of options for me. Definitely had a huge variety if you like meat though. My veggie burrito was alright, nothing fancy. Service was decent, but I wont be back.
(2)Kevan D.
This place is great. We always have wonderful service and the price isnt too much at all. The food is good, I wouldn't say best ever (I'm originally from California where the Mexican food is amazing).
(4)Irving T.
This is the only restaurant I visit at least once a week. I like that the owners know me by name and how the food isn't like the rest of the tex mex places. I love the steak and eggs for breakfast. The stuffed salmon is wonderful. And the horchata is great !! Not too expensive overall. Much better then what was there before. Complete turn around for the better.
