The place is the best Greek restaurant in the area. The pork chops were on point and the manager went out of his way to make my experience 5 star. I will be going again! Highly recommended!! Yia sou!!!

What a nice experience! From the moment I walked inside the door, I was greeted by 2 different people. The 1st was perhaps the Hostess & the other the Floor Manager. There was a nice crowd yet no wait, so after I was asked for my seating preference, to the patio I went. As soon as I sat down, my server Augustus popped over. He was welcoming & very expedient in his service. He knew the menu pretty well & was able to suggest he selections I could consumed. I ordered a glass of Malbec, he told me the brand & was on his way to the bar area. He came back pretty darn quick with my wine & asked if I had any questions. I decided on the Hummus dish as my appetizer & a nice salad for my entree. The Hummus was extremely delicious as the homemade ingredients was very present & to have a choice of white or whole wheat pita bread was a treat. There was a little spicy oil infusion drizzled on top with a few olives & I consumed it with a very happy stomach. I opted for a plain salad, nothing elaborate & really enjoyed the dining experience. The interior had a nice ambience of "the village" cafe with white table cloths, dimmed lighting/candles, an opened kitchen & serving station. Everyone I passed to & from the Ladies Room was just as friendly. Not to mentioned the cleanliness & decor of the restroom was staged perfectly. The price and portion was well balanced, which it made very easy to end the quick dinner on a very positive note with a generous tip. I'll be back to explore the menu very soon, thanks Augustus and team.

We just moved to the Kentlands last month and came across this place walking thru the neighborhood. As a fellow Greek, it was a nice surprise to find this place. The food was great and the people who work there are very friendly. I'm looking forward to going back. Hopefully soon since we live just across the street.

Three and a half stars. Polite service, small interior, slightly competitive street parking if you don't want to walk over from the nearby plaza lot. Pork chop was aggressively grilled past medium, and came with a side portion of the Village salad as well as skinny fries that were more conservatively seasoned, but evenly cooked. The eggplant puree had a nice smoky flavor from the roasting, and was accompanied by more than enough semi-plush pita quarters and cucumber slices. Pricing is on the high side of par for this neighborhood, but I'm willing to overlook the minor execution issues and try more of their menu: baby octopus, dolmathakia, falafel, Greek lamb sliders, gyro wrap, moussaka, sea scallops.

A low key restaurant tucked away near the residential part of Kentalnds, Vasilis is a fantastic place to grab a casual lunch or dinner. The menu is large and the portions are huge. On a nice day there is sidewalk seating, but the interior is small and fills up fast. The three dips appetizer, which is perfect to share, and the falafel I ordered later were both great. I would definitely come again! But beware it is a little hard to find and parking close by can be tricky.

Just went and picked up a buncha gyros from here for the office and the general consensus is that it was DELICIOUS! I would definitely go there again to get a gyro and try something new! I love the European feel of the outdoor seating and everyone was really friendly. 5 star! Super yummy!

Right when we entered, a very friendly waiter greeted us. In fact, he was hugging one patron right before. Big smile and crackin' jokes ("I'll hug you guys when you leave, too.") His enthusiasm and charm was infectious. After we were seated, he took our drink orders. I'm a health (and cheap) freak, so I always get water. I was pleasantly surprised when they brought waters with no ice. It's a small detail that matters a lot in the winter. 90% of restaurants seem to miss this. We started with the hummus ($8). It had a slight kick to it, which was a nice change of pace; and when we ran out of bread, they brought us more. My salmon ($19) was a bit saltier than I've experienced, but otherwise good. It came w/ sauteed spinach, which was good; but could have been jazzed up with a sauce or glaze. This cozy, authentic place is definitely worth experiencing.

Once loved this restaurant. Never before had a bad experience. But last Friday evening was a disaster, including a 40-minute wait for a glass of wine (perhaps they had to stomp on the grapes), 20 more minutes for appetizer (hummus) and finally, an hour later, only one of our two entrees came out. The promise of the other-- the exact same thing--was never fulfilled. They even had the gall to charge us for the glass of wine and the appetizer. I wonder how this restaurant expects to make it in its new at-least-triple-the-size quarters when service in this small space is so pathetic. They did not even have the class to respond to my emailed complaint.

We had high expectations of this restaurant. However, very poor service and a very long wait for our food, really made this restaurant a huge disappointment. The waitress was not even able bring us our bill, she had another person bring it out. The food was ok and because we had such poor service, it probably affected the way we felt about our meal. We did notice a very busy take-out business. As we experienced sitting there, we understood why take-out was the correct choice.

The food ordered was good... But I would never come back because of the serving size compared to the price. There are many other Mediterranean places in the area whose prices are not just a few bucks less, but also twice the portions. Seems like you're paying for the atmosphere - which I agree is "nice"... But for real people who want to go eat with friends and family, it's a bit too fancy in style... The food was good =) But same as other places... not much more special...

Great hummus, though they call it by the Greek name for hummus which starts with an R and I cannot remember what it is. A great felafel too and nice little outside seating area with a friendly staff. We will be back.

Great little place on the backside of the Kentlands. The service was great. I had the lamb shank which was perfect. Loved the fried calamari appetizer... Great sauce. The place it a little tight so if you like a lot of space, you're not going to find it here. Looking forward to going back.

AWESOMENESS! I've eaten here a handful of times now over the past 2yrs and each time I've had the best food and service. The place has always had a nice size occupancy when I've gone, but I also tend to get there after 7p and close the place down. Service is impeccable, they know the foods and wines, and always have personality. Greek grilled octopus is becoming one of my favs and this place does it perfectly! We also like the spanakopita, salmon, chicken kabobs, a chicken pasta dish and my new fav the Garithes Spanaki which is shrimp, spinach with tom wine sauce and pasta! YUM I can't remember the Greek wines, but they were ordered upon the server's suggestion and paired with the food -- all good choices. I'll be back again and again.

Great place for a fun meal out with friends. The waitstaff are experienced and professional, and the ambiance is classy without being too formal. I have eaten here maybe six times in the past two years and never had a bad experience. The fried cheese appetizer is so good, and I can vouch for the gyro, falafel, and lamb skewers. If you are drinking wine and having appetizers or dessert the bill can creep up, but otherwise the price is reasonable for the Kentlands. The only downsides: it is a little cramped but that adds to the intimate atmosphere; and if there is a wait in the winter, you're standing outside on the sidewalk.

I'm sorry... since when does a Greek salad have shredded carrots and cabbage? I am so confused. This is not my first time at Vasilis although have not been in a while and was really disappointed. it didn't taste bad just didn't make any sense. I love Greek food and found myself wishing we had gone to Athens Grill, by far the best! Sorry Vasilis you lost me on this one!

This is my wife's favorite restaurant. (She worked in a Greek Restaurant in Bloomington Indiana while in college) Overall the food is fantastic. The service is fantastic. The Greek style presented works well. If you get a chance eat outdoors and watch the people walk around mainstreet Kentlands. The atmosphere is friendly. It gets a little loud when it is busy but not horribly so you can at least still hear a conversation. The Gyro's platter is exceptional. Overall the place only loses a star because frankly it is a bit pricey. You are looking well North of 150 to feed a family of 5.

We visited this restaurant on small business Saturday. The falafel pita sandwich is really good here. Probably the best falafels in the area! The to-go service was awesome. The wait time for my order was extremely quick. It took about 5mins for the sandwich and order of fries.

FRIENDLY STAFF! Vasilis Mediterranean Grill is a great place for lunch or dinner, located on Main Steet in the Kentlands. Staff are friendly, and the food is good. We ordered a panini, which was delicious, and still eating and talking past the lunch hour; the staff were especially friendly and accommodating in letting us stay.

I went Greek last night!!......I mean I went to a Greek restaurant for dinner you dirty tard. Been to the Kentlands many times, and if I'm in the vicinity, I usually end up at Yoyogi's or Whole Foods. I feel like greek food is just like Mexican food. If you put all your ingredients in a tortilla and wrap it up and eat it, it's a Burrito. You take the same shit and sprinkle cheese and a verde sauce on top and bake it, it's an enchilada. Same shit with Greek food. One minute you are eating a Lamb Shish-Kabob served over rice, but you remove the stick and put it in a Pita, you are eating Lamb Souvlaki. You ask them to give you the rice and the pita then you will eff them all up. Anyways, I got the Gyro, and it was pretty good. I love Tzatziki sauce, so this was just right up my alley and of course I got extra so that I could dip my fries in. For 14 dollars though this was more than what it was worth. I could have gotten the same thing for 7 bucks at the food truck next to my office and it would have been just as good. Started off with Spanakopita which was ok, I have definitely had better. And we also had the calamari which was under fried which is always a shame. Plus they didn't include the mini squid ones which weird a lot of people out, but makes me feel normal because Im Asian and I eat weird shit. There is always at least one thing that will keep me coming back to a place and this place just didn't have one.

My co-worker and I were in the area for work and decided to try this place out. She had read that this place had good salads which was exactly what we were craving. Immediately upon arrival were we greeted by friendly and very accommodating staff, so I will definitely give them 5 stars for that. They were super sweet and very nice! I decided to order the Plaka salad which is essentially spinach, romaine, spring onions, mint, tomatoes and feta cheese. I added shrimp and cucumbers. My salad came out to be about $20 which to me is actually really overpriced. I was not prepared to drop $20 on a mediocre salad. Disappointing. The base salad itself without the shrimp would have been $11 which is still not worth just lettuce and a couple toppings. The shrimp was good and well cooked. But the salad was just okay. The best thing about the salad was the tatziki sauce I ordered on the side. It was amazing. Very fresh and simple with a generous amount of fresh garlic. I could have eaten an entire tub of the tatziki like it was ice cream - yikes. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't come back. There are other places that have great Greek salads that don't cost $20.

I love this restaurant. It's the perfect neighborhood place. Good food. Good owners and service. Great size. Reliable and consistent. It has been my favorite place in the Kentlands since moving to Maryland. I suggest sharing items on the menu so everyone gets a taste. However my favorite is their gyro sandwich. Best around.

This is one of my favorite restaurant in the Kentlands. And you can tell it does well they are always busy for lunch & dinner times. My only issue is that the food some times is not consistent. But what one of us always get is their pasta dish, it either comes with chicken or shrimp. Their tomato sauce is really good, probably the best in the Kentlands. Even better than some of the Italian restaurants around here. Lunch time I usually get the Lamb Souvlaki or Gyro with Fries. Both are good, and their fries are nice & thin & crispy. Haven't had dessert here, so can't say much about that. But, on nice weather days you can seat outside. Overall a decent meal.

My husband, 1.5 year old daughter and I had dinner here this past Friday night. We got out to eat often, avoid eating at chain restaurants whenever possible, but even we know that not all restaurants welcome babies, or even kids. At first glance, we were worried that dining with our toddler wouldn't be a great idea with the restaurants' white tablecloths and moderate-to-higher prices. But they did have a kids' menu, and our toddler was STARVING so we decided to take a chance. It was early, like 6pm, so we were seated immediately. We ended up sitting in the back, next to two other tables with toddler/babies, so we were immediately relieved we had stayed here. Our waiter was super friendly and seemed to enjoy his job. We quickly ordered the kids' chicken souvlaki, salmon souvlaki platter, lamb kakobs and two glasses of the Greek merlot (the only one that was available by the glass). Our wine was given to us within about 2 minutes, my girls' chicken in 5 minutes, and the house salads that came with our dishes came out a couple minutes after. The kids' chicken souvlaki was on the expensive side, but it came with a skewer of chicken, some feta and tomatoes, pita bread and little crispy french fries. Everything was delicious, and my baby ate most of it. Our lamb and salmon were fabulous; the salmon was excellently cooked and the tzatziki was great. We ate just about everything and were finished eating within 35 minutes of arriving. Overall, we were really happy with our visit. The place was very busy, people were waiting for tables while drinking glasses of wine, and were talking to other people who were already seated. It had such a friendly, neighborhood vibe. We watched our waiter great other customers and it was clear that a lot of people are regulars. We will definitely be back and explore what else the menu has to offer.

It's a nice, fancy restaurant with nice, fancy prices. We tried the falafel sandwich, lamb souvlaki and salmon souvlaki. All were pretty good, but not necessarily the best I have had. I did think that their tzatsiki was particularly delicious, and their fries were pretty good too (thin and crispy). My money's better spent at Moby Dick's in terms of food, but one must sometimes pay for ambiance.

Vasilis is the quintessential neighborhood spot. We've been coming here for a decade and they never disappoint! The hosts and servers, cooks all recognize us and treat like family.

Vasilis is easily my favorite restaurant in Kentlands. I've tried a bunch of menu items, and everything I've tried has been delicious. My favorite is the Mediterranean salad with chicken, and you get pita & tzatziki on the side. Their tzatziki is soooooo goooooood! We love Theo - he's super friendly and has gotten to know us. It's great to arrive to a restaurant and have your drink choice brought to you without even having to order it :) The only bad part about Vasilis is that it's pretty small, so most of the time you'll have to wait for a table, but it is definitely worth the wait!

The chicken pasta (forgot the name) was a little oily but the lamb sliders and the Gyro were amazing!!!!

3.5 really. I think this place is pretty good. It's really small but homey at the same time so that's always a plus. The servers were really nice and the atmosphere was good overall. I mean we went here on a weeknight and it was still full so that means it must be good right? The food wasn't bad. We ordered the trio for appetizers which consists of the three "dips" for the pita bread (which by the way, just came out of the oven because it was still deliciously hot when it got to us. yay!) - hummus, eggplant, and yogurt. All three were great, the yogurt even had a little kick to it too which my husband loved. The pita bread was good. It wasn't the best I've ever tasted but it's ranked pretty high up there. I ordered the recommended special - sauteed shrimp. It was ok. there was probably like 5 or 6 shrimps in the dish, then tons of artichoke hearts and spinach which I actually loved. I wasn't too impressed with the sauce however, as it was a little too bland for me, but my husband liked it. He ordered the gyro. The meat was ok.. it was just slightly on the dry side but again, not bad. Bottom line: the place is a little cramped, but it's definitely worth a visit or two =)

A restaurant that I will absolutely visit as often as possible. The food is as the name suggests, Mediterranean, and incredible. The service was stellar and the imported beer selection was brief but very well rounded. Without a doubt I would recommend this restaurant to anyone for a great casual meal.

  • Robyn M.

I have to admit, why anyone would rate this place lower than 5 stars is beyond me. My husband and I go here as our regular DATE NIGHT restaurant. Food is fabulous! Family owned and operated, the place is small but charming. The wait staff is always stellar. Be mindful, it's not a huge place so plan your visits in advance and avoid the typical eating hours if you don't want to wait, but the wait would be worth it anyway.

  • Cynthia L.

I don't know what it is about Vasilis that I love. Perhaps its the small, home feeling I get whenever I walk in. Or perhaps its the fact that as a child, my cousins and I went walking to their sister restaurant, Mythos, to chow down on Gyros after a long day at the pool. I was honestly so happy to find that I wouldn't have to trek all the way to Flower Hill just for a huge plate of gyro. I can't say I've tried any other entrees except the gyro sandwich platter, which is a huge (gyro sandwich plus fries and rice); it always leaves me super stuffed. I'll def have to go and try other things next time.

  • Robert C.

Gyro ($14) - Beef & Lamb with Rice, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Feta & Tzatziki. The rice tasted good, very flavorful. The gyros're pretty good too, except I find to be extremely salty. I was really dehydrated for the next 2 hours or so; I had to keep drinking water constantly. I know gyros're supposed to be a bit salty, but this was just ridiculous. I'm not sure if I just happened to get a bad batch since I keep hearing good things about this place from my co-workers. It would've been a solid 3 1/2 stars if it wasn't so freaking salty.

    (2)
  • John B.

Small cafe-type place with a pretty standard Greek menu. Wasn't wild about their spanakopita and fries were mediocre, but decent falafel. Nice ambiance, but like everything in Kentlands, it's hard to get to, gets crowded easily, and is overpriced for what it is.

    (3)
  • Diane G.

Awesome family atmosphere & great food! The only negative is that it is getting pricey...there is now more competition with very good restaurants in the new Crown development, so they need to watch the price creep! (The neighbors are watching!)

    (4)
  • Arthur Y.

My wife and I recently tried this restaurant pursuant to an Amazon Local Deal. The fact that we got a $20 voucher for $10 helped ameliorate the pricing. Pricing is the larger part of my discontent with this restaurant. The food was not memorable. My wife had a special of the day: stuffed tomato. She commented that it had too much rice and was greasy. I had a chicken souvlaki platter. I was dismayed by the additional charge of $5.50 for rice and salad (the difference between the platter and the plain souvlaki). However, I would not have minded had the salad been sizable. It was NOT. $5.50 extra for a leaf or, at most, two of iceberg lettuce and little else is outrageous. Overall, I do NOT recommend this restaurant. If you want Greek food in this general area, go to Ambrosia Grille at 802 Hungerford Drive, Rockville. Better food at more reasonable prices. However, as of this writing (3/27/13) I am not certain that the Ambrosia Grille is still in business. Parking is on street and limited, unless you park at one of the stores a few blocks away.

We unexpectedly ended up at Vasilis after the Colombian restaurant across the street closed earlier than expected. The ambiance at Vasilis was very cozy and friendly and the staff were all professional yet very friendly and inviting. The food, from the wine, beer, and appetizers to the homemade bread and entrees and side salads were amazing. Very fresh, great flavor, and overall sastisfying without leaving us feeling too heavy. We will definitely be making this a regular restaurant we come to as the entire experience was great!

This is a great little authentic Greek restaurant. The food is delicious and a great value for your money. Our waiter, Theo, was fantastic. He made the experience that much better. Very personable and a great server all the way around. The restaurant was very clean and nicely decorated. Will definitely return.

For this little Greek restaurant, Vasilis Mediterranean Grill, the best tip to give... if you're dining at this spot on a whim, be prepared to wait 30-45 minutes and the waiting area isn't that big either. What they lack in the size of the dining area, they make up with the hospitality and great foods. The platters are moderately priced on the average of $15 per platter serving. We started with an appetizer, the Saganaki, a pan-seared Greek Kefalaograviera cheese that's set aflame for show. The cheese literally oozes out when you break its encrusted outer shell. You can eat this cheese as a bread topper or with the house [greek] salad that comes with the platters. We followed the appetizer with an order of Shrimp Souvlaki platter and an order of Pastichio. The Pastichio resembles the lasagna but instead of lasagna noodles, thin ziti pasta is used to layer between the greek-seasoned ground beef, served with a side of stewed green beans, greek style. The dining area is a cozy setting, with many Greek decor (include the two greek columns when you enter the establishment). The staff was pleasant and attended to our drinking needs whenever it ran low. In the end, I was quite happy to provide a nice tip for our waiter, Andro -- despite the little mix-up when it came to paying for the check. If you find yourself in the neighbor or would like some nice greek dining, check out Vasilis Mediterranean Grill.

3.5 stars I'll agree with some reviewers that prices are on the high side. I loved my salmon and spinach, though, and enjoyed my Malbec. My dining partners were particularly raving about the tzaziki, but did seem to enjoy their gyro, shrimp souvlaki and chicken souvlaki. We didn't, however, enjoy the temperature of the room - it was almost unbearably hot. Also, if you come on a Saturday night, definitely be prepared to wait.

My entire family loves this restaurant husband is truly a fan and would definitely rate Vasilis a 5! He eats there at least 3 times a week. His fave would be the Greek Salad with lamb/balsamic vinaigrette dressing. My fave is the hummus! Yummy - can taste it now. LOL For the first time I experienced falafels. Never had them before and for a first timer they were delicious. So I told you about my hubby - I had falafels 3 times last week..LOL. I am stuck on stupid ...I know. OMG - try the blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream. Yummy for your tummy!! Great atmosphere! Go Go!!

Easily forgettable place of americanized greek food. I just spend 3 weeks on a road trip through mainland Greece and I honestly cannot call this place "authentic". Just a couple 'misses' the day we've visited this place: taramosalata had hardly any carp roe in it and spanakopita was soggy and cheeseless. Greek salad was nothing to write home about either. In Greece it would have been a very mediocre restaurant.

This has historically been among the most popular, and long-lived restaurants in the Kentlands. Inside, it's a small, intimate restaurant with pretty generic decor. By intimate I mean you have to be careful you're not taking food off your neighbor's plate. The family that owns and runs the place is usually around which helps keep the quality high. Weather permitting, the sidewalk seating is the place to be. That said, when the weather is nice getting a seat usually involves a wait. I've had a number of menu items and have found them all to be very good and authentic. I'd love to see a few more menu items. I generally prefer a restaurant that specializes, as Vasilis does, but the menu is really very limited. There's usually a couple of good specials that are worth looking at. They have a wine list that reflects the menu in it's Greek offerings and limited selection. I'd put the prices at around 20 - 25% higher than I'd like to see them. Yes, the rent in the Kentlands is high but the prices put me just outside of my comfort range for regular visits. I know a number of people who eat at Vasilis every weekend so don't let my stinginess keep you away. Definitely worth a visit, you won't be sorry.

First time there this past week and it was hecka good! We had the lamb souvlaki on pita bread with lettuce, tomatoes and feta cheese with a side choice of fries or rice. Since my tastebuds know very little about mediterranean food, I ordered something my brain has never encountered as well- a falafel: chickpea fritter with garlic and herb junks. It was a bit out there for me since I'm not used to that kind of exotic taste but I'm sure it's really good if I grew up on this stuff. The tzatziki sauce was boss. I dipped everything in it including my fries. Def come back for more of this stuff!!

I absolutely love Vasilis"s! Their Moussaka, greek salad, as well as their many appetizers never fail to impress me. The atmosphere is exactly what I seek in a restaurant, cozy and inviting. It is usually packed whichever night of the week I go there, however I love that since it means the food is fresh and isn't that the purpose of eating out, to be around people... I love that it is not a chain restaurant, it has that neighborhood charm and I hope they never move to a bigger space since I think half the charm comes from the restaurant being smaller. Now I just made myself hungry, thinking about their food =) I'll have to go there again this week =)

Great food. Serving size is not good so choose wisely. The more hefty choices like the pastichio and moussaka are the best bet for the money if that's what you're after - they are also Greek classics that every single restaurant has daily. They are cheap to make so that's why you get a bunch of food. One time we ordered a special appetizer and the size was crazy disappointing. Baklava is ridiculously tasty.

I've been going to Vasilis for some years now and I will say, I have never left disappointed. This Greek family owned spot makes you to feel like you are apart of their own little Mediterranean world. Amazing staff who go out of their way to make you feel at home. They have the best calamari, tazaiki sauce and lamb in town! Keep up the good work, guys!

I may be the wrong person to review Vasilis because I'm surrounded by Greeks and am used to a lot of home cooked Mediterranean food. But this isn't my favorite Greek restaurant. I'd give it 3.5 stars if that were an option. The food isn't bad at all. It's good, in fact. It's just not great. We start with the trio of dips. The tatziki has a very nice kick to it (they said it's from all the garlic). The teramosalata is fluffy enough. The pita's nice and warm. For my meal, I order pastichio. It's good. Not too tomatoey, which is how I like it (but the tomato sauce they do add is a bit watery). That's probably my favorite thing I've had there either way. I'm not into their green beans (too watery again), but I subbed broccoli last time and it was a definite improvement. My husband orders and really enjoys the lamb chops. He says they're tender, flavorful - not gamey, and average-sized. My son just tried their chicken tenders and rice. The chicken was extra dry and overly crispy (downright hard) and I'm pretty sure the rice was instant. That's such a terrible claim for a restaurant, but it sure tasted like instant (which means it was no good either way). For dessert, they do a very good job with the Galaktoboureko. My favorite in this area is at Greek Islands Grill (too far away to hold out for), but Visilis still delivers a great one. As far as drinks go, their beer selection is limited and they don't have bottled water. But the Greek beer we order, Mythos, is good (comparable to an Amstel Light). The best I can say of Vasilis is that their atmosphere and service are both great. The patio is a nice option and the inside is very quaint. Every time I've been, the servers have been very polite and accommodating. I'd give the restaurant more stars if I really enjoyed the food. The real problem is, even though I'll probably go again, I just don't need to.

I cannot tolerate a place which has poor service. We had a livingsocial which we decided to use for lunch. First of all the food doesn't show up until good 25 mins. A lot of other people who came well after us got their food. The hispanic waitress brings out a a different salad than what was ordered. I ordered the Slovaki sandwich and she brings it out with Rice (on her own) and then goes ahead to charge us for a platter when we specifically asked for a sandwich only. After a series of back and forth everything was corrected, but that too from another waiter as she just wouldn't come back for minutes at a time. The service is slow, and when you combine that with messing up on orders and high average entree prices, its a dealbreaker for me. As a tip to the restaurant owner, please replace the hispanic waitress. I just found out that they have a live feed of everyone in the restaurant. shopkentlandsdeals.com/?… So much for the privacy of your lunch or dinner. I would never go to a place where I was broadcast over the internet for the whole world

Dolmathakia - $9; Pikilia (The Trio) - $14 and Gyro - $14, we love Pikilia very much, it contained tzatziki, melitzanosalata, and hummus. Melitizansalata (another name for Baba ghanoush) tasted so delicious, Tzatziki and hummus were the best!! Dolmathakia was not what we expected, it was cooked and less rice, it was OK. We were so used with cold dolmathakia with a lot of rice stuffed in. Gyro was very good, very flavorful. The indoor was very dark so we chose outdoor dining area and the service was great. The hostess needs to dress right, she looked like a prostitute. Their free wifi doesn't have the strength on my mobile so I gave up trying.

3.5 stars...This place is 4 star in Gaithersburg, but 3 star compared to other restaurants of it's type in general. It's a nice neighborhood place with a Mediterranean menu that covers anything you may want. The service is good. The room is comfortable. I am always satisfied, but never blown away. This sounds more blah than it is, yet at the same time, I'm having a hard time making it sound more exciting...and that is the very reason I can't find the 4th star.

I worked / ate here all the time for a year until I moved. I have worked at several restaurants and none of them compare to the quality of Vasilis! The owners Bill and Julie are there everyday it is open and put so much love and passion into everything they do there, it is unlike anything I have ever witnessed. Everything is made at the restaurant and with fresh and high-quality ingredients. Not many places operate this way anymore and I think this is what sets Vasilis apart and makes the food there absolutely amazing!! Overall great people, amazing food, and personable experience! Vasilis has completely changed my outlook on dining out and I can't wait to go there the next time I'm back in MD!

3.5/5 stars. This place is cute, small, and quaint, typical of the little restaurants tucked out of the way on Kentland's Main Street. We went on a Friday evening and the place was packed; we had to wait half an hour for a table of three. The place is small and seating is pretty limited as other reviews have mentioned. It does give it a homey touch, I guess. We ended up getting seated at a table meant for two but we rolled with it. The food was decent, not spectacular but definitely not bad. I ordered the shrimp souvlaki platter which had about 6 pieces of grilled shrimp with diced lettuce tomatoes and onion on a piece of pita (I requested whole wheat) with tzatziki and a side of fries. The shrimp were flavorful but slightly dry and hard. The fries were nothing to write home about. The tzatziki was pretty darn deeelicious though; I pretty much licked clean my little cupful of the stuff. My friends ordered the Kalamata Chicken over pasta and the Pork Brizoles. The sauce on the Kalamata dish was good but the chicken itself was a little bland. The pork dish came with two very generous and thick pieces of pork. The meat was seasoned nicely, but slightly overcooked in some parts though we did find a few juicy parts here and there. I've had better Mediterranean food but this was ok.. Other than that, the service was great, our waitress was very very friendly and personable :) Definitely may consider coming back, not so much for the food, but for the nice little place itself.

I occasionally get the gyro and side-salad at lunchtime. It's quite tasty as far as Greek in this area goes, but quite expensive.

Agree with 3 1/2 stars. Came in a few times. To be honest the food is not very consistent, but because of great service, nice atmosphere and trying to support local family business i'll keep coming back and hope for more consistent food quality. So far: - Saganaki (good) - Lamb souvlaki (tough and dried out) - Beef souvlaki (very good, can't go wrong) - Accompanying pitta bread, tzatziki and feta were very good. - Gyros (meh. the standard loaf stuff) - Greek salad (sorry, it's not authentic greek salad. few slices of tomato, cucumber and tone of questionable freshness lettuce) - Galaktobouriko (delicious! just ask them to not overheat it in the microwave before serving) - wine selection (pretty good for a smaller range) - service (excellent)

Vasilis is one of my favorite lunch/dinner spots in the DC area. Bill (the owner) and his staff are always personable, and the service has never been less than excellent. I love the gyro and the lamb kabob, and I always try to drop by and eat there when I'm in town.

I left Maryland about 3 years ago and what do I come home to? VASILIS. Best welcome home present EVER. I had the nicest evening here during Thanksgiving with a group of friends. This bustling greek restaurant gets really busy on the weekends so I would highly recommend making a reservation. It is situated in what looked like Pleasantville, a tightly packed town house neighborhood with bunch of mom & pops lined up along the street. The food here is wonderful. You MUSt start out with the spicy taziki with pita and cucumbers! I got to try a lot of the dishes since we were with a big group but my favorite was this chicken vodka cream sauce rice dish that my friend REFUSEd to share. I had the steak salad which was good but I would go with a heavier entree next time. I loved the fries with feta! Tip: Not really a healthy night out if you know what I mean so get ready to do some sit ups the next day! But totally worth the calories. I can't wait to go back home and visit this place!

I'm mainly writing this review to remind myself to come here next week. I keep forgetting how good the food is here. The steak and cheese panini is excellent along with the fries (not sure if french fries are authentic Greek food). I really only remember one subpar dish, the pasta, which did not seem to be made fresh. The only real downside to this place is how crowded it is during lunch hour and how dark it is. The crowded part is due to the location and I guess there's not much they can do about that short of buying up neighboring businesses like a diabolical land baron. Being of the OCD tribe, I don't enjoy eating elbow to elbow with other people. The wait staff is always friendly and seem to all be Greek (or just white people with black hair... I can't really tell the difference), and they make you feel really welcome the moment you step inside.

First time. Food was good. Especially, the sea bass. Service could have been better, as we were felt to be an after thought when other guests arrived and received attention and items that we had to interrupt and ask for. First impressions are important. Doubt we'll be back! Gave 3 stars because of food not service!

I'm no fan of Greek food, but I finally relented after a lot of peer pressure to try this place out. I'm glad I did! The menu is far more than just grape leaves and olives so I think any taste can be satisfied. The food tasted absolutely fresh, the portions were a really good size, the service could not have been friendlier (the owners and their sons run the place) -- there's no question but that I'd go back. I'm also no fan of crowds so we went very early (Saturday, 5:00 pm) and the place was empty. By the time we left around 6:30, the small dining room was packed. It's not the cheapest food out there, but it's worth it if you want to splurge a little.

So I'm in MD/DC pretty often and usually the people I'm with are the ones to point me in the right direction...of course I still have to use my handy dandy yelp app before I'll even consider eating anywhere! So after reading through the reviews, we decided to go ahead and try it...and OMG, I'm glad we did! The food was PHENOMENAL! We got the moussaka and something else...but both dishes were so good...the salad was amazing, and this coming from someone who is not a fan of olives or feta...that salad was scrumptious! The tzatiki sauce was just as delicious, most likely since the yogurt is made in house...and there is nothing like fresh yogurt! Hands down an amazing place for dinner or lunch...we chose to sit outdoors under the patio shade, but the inside could be nice for a group dinner or even as a solution to a lazy day when you don't feel like cooking :)

We eat here every few months. Love the shrimp and chicken souvlaki and a big fan of their tzatziki, dolmathakia, and the pikilia (tzatziki, rustic eggplant dip, and hummus). Service is normally excellent, although today was very poor. This seems exception to the norm. Still good place to eat

If you want truly authentic greek home cooking...........go to greece! Or just go here! I have seen Julie and Bill in action making everything from scratch with truly greek ingrediants. Unbelievable! The passion here for authenticity is over the top!

Love this place! I live about 15 minutes away but I will go out of my way to eat here. Service is always good and the food quality justifies the price. I was never a greek food fan but this restaurant is the yummy. Outdoor seating during the summer is pleasant.

Stopped in here for a light dinner after a zumba class up the street and the food was excellent. I was expecting something more like a chain, but it's a really nice little Mom and Pop restaurant with a good looking menu, a good amount of variety, but not overwhelming. I ended up ordering a gyro to split, also got some hummus. Both dishes were excellent, waitstaff was polite and attentive. The gyro was perfectly made, bread was nice and fresh, the meat was perfectly cooked. The hummus was also wonderful, perfect blend of oil and seasoning.

We went on a Friday for lunch. We don't really know anything about Greek food (even though we spent a little over a week in Greece once). My wife had the balsamic chicken special which was wonderful. I had a chicken in vodka sauce which was also good. The bathroom could use a brighter light bulb. We also had a gyro appetizer that was good. Overall we had a very nice lunch.

This is a great place to have an outdoor meal. The sidewalk seating is so relaxing and the flower boxes nearby were a nice touch. The staff has mainly been pleasant and accomodating. The meals take a while to come, but when you're with friends it is hardly noticable. I had some dietary restrictions and they didn't make me feel weird and got me something I could eat. Before my diet was restricted, I have enjoyed their food and it is good. Some portions are too big. I think if the made the portions smaller they could charge a little less.

Small greek restaurant that can get crowded during busy hours. Lunch time was ok. I been here for dinner before and it was really packed - the pork chop was great! For lunch, I ordered the Kalamata Chicken pasta it was not too bad but with few pieces of chicken and totally tossed in the sauce. The soda was flat I asked for another and waitress gave me a diet one instead - I drank it to save the hassle. Definitely more on the pricey side. Quality is average nothing outstanding. Cava is going to take over Greek food in this area!

This Kentlands joint (20878 is the place to be) rocks it out......only 60? seats and packed in like sardines on weekends line out the door. Owner Bill very hands on and very friendly been in the restaurant biz for a long time. Tried the special Brizzola steak and potatoes to go came with bread and Greek salad. The meat was cooked perfectly medium rare and devine. This place has buzz taste and class but small and noisy so not a real first date place....

Tuck away in the neighborhoods of Kentlands, this place is a nice cozy restaurant to check out. I walked into the restaurant, expecting to see a host/hostess stand, but it was not there, not a deal breaker though. The hostess walked up to us after seating another table and told us the wait is about 15 minutes. They have a few tables outside, so we sat on the chairs outside. Our table was called and we had the choice to sit outside or inside. We choice to be inside since we were with our baby nephew too. Water was served right away, as well as the bread with olive oil and herbs. It seems as if the wait staff works as a team, so you get someone else coming to the table at different times. The waitress came by, we ordered the calamari, baby octopus w/ vinaigrette to start off with. Calamari was very thin, as if there was no squid in there. It was very cripsy, not burnt, again, no taste of squid, well barely. Baby octopus was good, well I liked the texture, not over done or rubbery. The vinaigrette/butter was OK, not great. Time for the entrees. I ordered the Mousaka, which is "lasagna". Layered eggplants, potatoes, ground beef, and topped with creamy bechamel sauce. Didn't know what this was but it's a creamy white sauce, kind of heavy. I didn't like my dish too much, just not my cup of tea. However, it was good, just that I couldn't do more than a few forks of this dish (even though I ate it all). It came with some stewed green beans, which I liked. Another dish that was ordered on the able was the combo shish-kabob, which was one chicken and one lamb. Took a piece of the lamb and it was really good. Seasoned very well and the lamb was not gamey at all. Only thing was the lamb was a little tough, but again, very flavorful. Overall, a solid 3-5 star. I don't know if I'd go back, but if I'm in the mood for Greek food, I'd get the kabobs and the table next to us had a very good looking Gyro. Good service, small homey feeling, however pretty crowded and small inside. See if you can get an outside table if you check this place out.

I am so tired of wanting the food at Vasilis but not being able to get a table :( I don't understand why they won't take reservations. What's the down side of that?) It's a little better in the summer because you can dine outside, which is actually preferable to the confined space inside. You can't hear a conversation inside, and it's very cramped. Plus there is no place to wait without standing on top of the diners at the first table. Too bad they can't bust through a wall. There is no better gyro or tzatsikii in town!

My boyfriend has worked here for three years, and as a result I have seen the ups and downs of this place. Vasilis is a family run restaurant that has become a mainstay in the Kentlands community. Many of the patrons are regulars or friends of the owners, Bill and Julie. That being said, I really want to like this place more than I do. The restaurant is too small, and has too many tables for its size. This not only affects the customer's experience but the waiter's service. Recently they added benches along the perimeter of the room. This wasn't the best idea beause they are somewhat uncomfortable, especially the awkwardly placed back support. Because the space is so small, it does get very loud in here too. My grandmother found this off-putting while it doesn't bother others. From around April to October they take advantage of their large sidewalk and offer outdoor seating. If it colder they turn on heaters. Overall, the food is well-prepared, and there are traditional Greek dishes like mousaka, as well general Mediterranean dishes like chicken romano. There are usually seafood specials that generally well-prepared. Although, the last time I was here I ordered trout that I found to be a bit too oily. The presentation is lacking in some cases as well. Desserts range from traditional Greek baklava (very good) to American apple pie. They also have Greek coffee as well as Greek wine and beer offered. No hard alcohol though. Prices are moderate. Don't expect to pay much more than $15 per person for an entree.

I went here last night. I got the Pastichio which is like a greek version of the lasagna. Pretty good, its dish thats not very big in size, but leaves you feeling very full coz of the cream used in it. My hubby got the lamb shank, it was just ok since there wasnt much flavor to the meat. But we got their homemade marinara sauce and used it with both the Pastichio and the Lamb shank, made it great. Service was good ok. We went on a Thurs nite for dinner and was surprised that there were so many people in the restaurant. This is the kind of place you go not hoping to get served and get out in a hurry. sit relax enjoy. will definitely go back to try some of their other dishes.

This WAS my favorite restaurant in the Kentlands until recently. My mom & sister flew down from Boston for the weekend & I took them there to eat just after 8pm on a Friday night. The place was packed, as usual.....it's always been great food, great service, and thus worth the wait. After being seated, it took over 20 minutes for anyone to take our order. We received our appetizer, which was cold, and then the real wait began. 30 minutes went by & our waitress hadn't come back to the table and our drinking glasses were empty (and usually you cannot even put your empty glass down before someone is there to refill it). Finally, she came back to say she was so sorry it was taking so long, that the food was being prepared downstairs, and that it would be only 5 more minutes. 15 minutes later, as I overheard another waitress telling a couple that the kitchen would be closing soon (they close at 10pm) and that if they wished to eat, they needed to put their order in. At the same time, the family sitting next to us who were seated AFTER us was paying their bill, bellies full, and leaving. Us? Still nothing! I stood up and walked to the back, demanding an explanation - with nothing but "I'm sorry" (this line was getting really old at this point), I told the waitress we were leaving. I was handed a bill for the drinks, cold appetizer, AND meals that we didn't receive. At this point, I said "This is embarrassing. My family is here from out of town, I'm a regular in here .... I shouldn't even be getting a bill." I was given a 2nd bill for the drinks, the appetizer, with a 10% discount. Really??? 10% is NOTHING. That was 2 hours I'll never get back, and Vasilis has lost one dedicated customer. After all the friends & co-workers I recommended the place to, I've certainly shared this ordeal.

Vasili's is fantastic! Food was wonderful (we ordered the trio, gyro meze, falafel meze and the shrimp with ouzo) - we ate it all! And it was only me and my girlfriend! Plus our waiter couldn't have been more fun and fabulous-ask for Yanni if you stop by. He's the best! He'll make sure you order the best-tasting stuff on the menu!

I am really a fan of this place. Been back a few times and tried some different things. Whoever runs this place does it right with all super fresh ingredients. That gyro sandwich is very good. The felafels took me back to the streets of Israel. They were very authentic. The eggplant dip was light, flavorful and delicious. The pita was piping hot and a perfect accompaniment. It's hard to find something wrong with this place. Possibly a little pricey but worth it.

Just disappointed. Went there for lunch-it was so loud in there! I ordered a gyro which was $8.50. Waitress asked if I wanted rice or fries and I said, "No thanks, just a greek salad" so my eight dollar gyro turned into a $14.00 platter with a $2.00 substitution fee. Seriously? I called after I left and told them that they those are poor business practices not to tell someone about charging them twice as much. Food was ok-Athen's Grill is better.

My wife and I wondered why is this place packed every time we go by. So we ate there last night. Order of tzaziki was ok. Not that it's hard to make good tzaziki - greek yogurt, garlic, an olive or 3, and cucumbers. People have commented on "fresh" food. If that means salad from a bag, I'm curious what your take on salad from a farmers market would be called. My son's lamb souvlaki had more meat on it than my "adult" souvlaki ($15) and less than my wife's shish-kabob platter ($18). The only difference being mine having a piece of pita bread on the plate. My daughters gyro was decent, but I'm a sucker for shaved gyro meat. Why again am I getting formerly bagged salad on my entree plate. Some crumbled feta and chopped up tomato finished my plate. And why are you serving tzaziki in a cheap, waxed paper container? Cost? At $15-$20 an entree and considering your restaurant is packed daily, surely you can afford to put the tzaziki in a small aluminum server cup. We ordered a bottle of French Syrah ($40) which arrived like it was just taken out of the oven. Who serves French red at room temp, which last night was about 80 degrees? The table service was good. The owner/chef was working the room except for our table and a few others which I thought was a poor choice. Why would you talk to your regulars and not people you don't recognize? Regulars are going to tell you your food is great (which it's not). Another over-priced Kentlands let down. Is it really that hard to get good food in the Kentlands??? We're completely unimpressed and disappointed. If you think this is great Greek food, I have a bridge to sell you in the Kentlands that will take you over to Europe where they serve Greek food that would make Vasilis seem like cafeteria food.
