Neal's bagels is not what it once was since changing ownership. That being said, Neal's still has the best bagels is town offering a high variety of fresh bagels. With a baker whose worked at Neal's for 15+ years, Neal's has a local small business feel. Neal's has excellent bagel sandwiches as well including a delicious egg salad on sesame and the popular bacon egg and cheese on an everything. New Yorkers profess all the time that Neal's "has the best bagels outside of NYC."

Neil of Neal's Bagels was a riot. My wife and I went there for breakfast and had a lox bagel and multigrain bagel with cream cheese. They have a wide variety of bagels, sandwiches and drinks. We will definitely be back for more!

Neal's is the knock down champ of the bagel world in the Gaithersburg area. Nice, rich, thick bagels that let you actually bite down into them. The breakfast sandwich (egg, tomato, and cheese) is a knockout, and I promise you will not regret ordering it. While you're here you should be sure to grab a half dozen bagels. Because these bagels are the real deal they will only hold for maybe two days in Ziploc baggies...but that's a good thing!

Found Neal's Bagels thanks to Yelpers and stopped by here to get some breakfast. I had the Belly Lox and Cream Cheese bagel to go. They offered to toast my bagel and also put some tomato slices in the sandwich. Nice touches. The bagel was very good. Nice crust on the outside and chewy inside. I'd definitely come back here to get bagels in the future.

They make their bagels in house! The best bagels in the area. Hands down. And the staff are great.

C'mon, Neal. Step up your flavor game. As I sit in front of your store, trying to figure out why I came here instead of Bageltown, I didn't realize I ordered a bacon, egg & cheese on toasted cardboard. Set your bagels apart and try something new, innovative & flavorful! (See ocean city's Ãœber Bagels menu for some ideas)

Unfortunately I've had to go on a low-carb relatively low-salt diet which is why I'm no longer a regular at Neal's. They're a great little gem in a kind of boring strip mall. Good place to go for a bagel sandwich, very friendly to talk to. They have a great selection of bagels, including a pumpkin bagel near halloween (basically an egg bagel, but with a very interesting color) and fun flavors like blueberry. I also enjoy their corned beef which they make themselves. Ok, I'll tell you a secret which I never would if I wasn't on a diet that makes it impossible to eat a dozen bagels a week. Ready? Show up around 5pm (closing time) on a weekday. Order a dozen bagels and ask them if they'll 'throw a few extra ones in?' I have gotten around 15-16 bagels this way for the same price. However, I did go out of my way to chat with the owner and his wife and become friends with them before I started getting freebies so your mileage might vary. Even their regular deal of baker's dozen is still pretty good.

We live around the corner so we often walk to Neal's on the weekends. The bagels are great but the chicken and tuna salads are absolutely the best!

Neal's Bagel's has, hands down, the best bagels my husband and I have ever tasted. They are freshly made daily, right there, not frozen (which is very unusual), and absolutely delicious - chewy, and flavorful. The whole wheat everything kind is our particular favorite, but all the varieties are excellent. In addition, the tuna salad is fabulous -- spicy, filled will mostly tuna and just a touch of mayonnaise - best ever. Finally, Neal himself, the owner, is a great guy - funny, a good businessman, and eager to please. We have tried many other bagel places, including several in NY City, but none compare. Neal's is simply the best. And no, we are not relatives or investors in Neal's -- we just know quality food.

Best bagels in the area, and friendly service! Wish they had seating.

The best part is the bagels and I guess that's what really counts but there's usually a line and the owner and other employees are not exactly quick. I will call ahead but it's a crap shoot getting someone to pick up on the other end. Dunkin Donuts is right across the street and gets you through the long line much faster. There's also the grocery store and my toaster at home. I prefer to support small business but not if it means waiting a hour for bagels.

  • Jack C.

Super Dirty, 10 people on line. One worker on phone instead of waiting on people in store. Manager BSing with person in front of store. Almost no cream cheese on bagel. Ordered 2 everything with cream chess and mixed dozen. Got home and only one with cream cheese in the bag. :-(. I will drive all the way to Bethesda Bagels from now on.

Pretty good bagels! Some of the best non-NY bagels I've had in a while. The lox was decent, not exciting. Friendly staff and quick service. Probably the best you're gonna find in the area. I say go for it.

I know the people who grew up going here love the owners, and maybe they've learned to love the food, but bagels in a bagel shop don't get worse than this, at least they shouldn't within 25 miles of a community with more than 500 Jews. I'm from NY. I know bagels. These suck! The bagels are chewy, but not chewy in a good way; more chewy-gluey. The whitefish salad and the lox stink... really stink. Smoked fish shouldn't taste fishy, and their's does. I feel sorry for the people who give this dark, dreary hole-in-strip-mall more than two stars. They either haven't had good bagels and deli, or they're shills for the owner. Either way, I wish them better bagels. I still need to check out Royal Bagel in Gaithersburg, but Ize's in Rockville is worth the trip from the Kentlands if Einstein is the best that NoMoCo has to offer.

    (1)
  • Mike B.

Just get the bagels and stay away from the other stuff (except the occasional cookie!) The bagels are the real deal. Better yet, get the everything bagels...a dozen of them. they are the best. No need to mix and match. Yes, I occasionally get an underdone one. I'm just so glad to finally find some real bagels in this town. Update July 2015: Lately, I've been getting some bagels very early in the morning that are not so fresh. I wonder if they were from the day before. It seems that something has changed here, so I've switched to Einstein.

Still 4-star strong. Is it sad that when my husband and I go out of town, we make a point to stop at Neal's for bagels, even if it adds 20 minutes to our journey? Perhaps, but MAN these bagels are just so good, even if the line is alllllllways long on the weekends. On our way up north for some skiing this past weekend, we decided to not only stock up on delish bagels, but some baked goods as well. Seeing as they make NY traditional black-and-whites here, we decided to give those goodies a whirl. Different from what you'd get in Manhattan - but not in a bad way. The frosting is thinner and more liquidy, instead of a hard, caked on frosting. The cookie is also more dense than the usual fluffy cake-like consistency. But hey, it was a twist on an old classic and I liked it!

We were driving through and found Neals thanks to Yelp. Excellent food (best bagels I have had outside NYC in a while) and friendly service. Prices were reasonable, fed 4 kids and 2 adults with money left for the day.

  • Sally G.

Sadly, I was a bit underwhelmed by my experience. I thought the bagel was fine--nothing awful but also not anything extraordinary. The service was rather unfriendly as the man at the counter acted as if I was a nuisance interrupting his day.(I literally just walked in, ordered a bagel with cream cheese and walked out--there was only one other person in the place). I also felt like it was a bit overpriced. I doubt I will return.

We love Neal's bagels- some of the best bagels around. Lox always tastes fresh and the whitefish salad is delish.

Neil's Bagels are the best NY bagels in the area. Always fresh. Don't be discouraged by the line out the door, moves quickly. It is fairly priced.

    (5)
  • Jacqueline R.

There has been a noticeable decline in the place since new ownership took over. Bagels are allowed to get stale and are in the bins the next morning as fresh...and the customer service is really lax. I used to love this place but it's definitely gone down.

  • Becca B.

This is definitely the best bagel place in Gaithersburg/ North Potomac. My go-to is an everything bagel with cream cheese, but I also love their sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich!

    (5)
  • Suzanne C.

Best bagels in north Potomac! Crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside and lots of cream cheese! Yum! There's always a line but it moves quickly.

So I go to Neal's on a regular basis and it has honestly ruined other bagel places for me. Really good quality, they load their bagels up nicely, and I've never had a bad experience there in a year and a half of going there! Bagels are always made fresh, and they'll sell the day old ones up front for a reduced cost too which is nice if you don't mind that sort of thing. I'll definitely keep coming back here.

In short: sesame bagel was awful, lox&bagel lacked tomatoes, onions, capers or pickles and was overpriced at $7. In detail: Moved into the area yesterday and went for a search of a good bagel place. Neal's Bagels was a huge disappointment. Ordered Lox & bagel (Nova Scotia & plain cream cheese on sesame bagel) for $6.99 + tax. The bagel itself tasted like stale bread - nothing soft and chewy inside, as I was hoping. Not much salmon went into the sandwich with a $7 price tag. I have to admit, the guy, who prepared it, went to great lengths to ensure, that it was spreaded equally. He also put enough of cream cheese. Unfortunately nothing else went into the bagel! No tomatoes, onions, capers, pickles - nothing. On the top of all it the place is dirty. Maybe not disgusting and more mom-and-pop-deli kind, but still it is dirty and does not help your appetite.

  • Gerry B.

You can see them in the back hand rolling the bagels, and by the size of the racks, they must make A LOT of bagels everyday. Good crunch on the outside, soft on the inside. Their presentation could be better, when they use cream cheese from an industrial size tub and it literally says "acme" on the side, maybe try a different set up. And they only have one person helping customers in the morning, glad I came in when I did, because my order of two bagels with cream cheese to go created a little line. Can't argue with the quality of the product though.

Having moved from New Jersey this past summer, I had yet to orient my bagel palate to the local area. So, Neal's Bagels, located in a nearby shopping plaza, recently became my first test case to see how well Maryland rolls. Choice number one was a bacon, egg and cheese on a cinnamon raisin bagel with a cup of joe. The selections were decent and the gentlemen working here were very friendly, polite and had our orders ready to go fairly quickly. There's only a small window counter inside, so we grabbed one the small tables outside to enjoy the sun. I was very pleased (and relieved) to find the bagel was really good. Not as excellent as some I've had in the past (I hate to compare, but I can't help it), but I was not disappointed with my late morning sandwich. I doubt I'll find anything better or closer than Neal's, so for now, I'm a first-time fan. 3.5 Stars.

I hired Neal's Bagels to cater a breakfast event for 150 people at Lockheed Martin in DC yesterday. I was BEYOND happy with the service, presentation, and quality of the food. The bagels and muffins were so moist and delicious, and the compliments kept coming. Without a doubt, the price was way more affordable than other catering companies that I have ordered from previously and I got much more food for the money. I would absolutely recommend this small business to others in need of catering for family or corporate events!!!

Neal's is quick, affordable and delicious. It doesn't get any better than that! The bagels are awesome, the spreads, especially the veggie one, are fantastic and the people there are extremely friendly and want to go out of their way to help you. Definitely a great choice for breakfast/lunch. My family and I also got catering from here for the Jewish holidays. One of the best, if not the best, spreads I have seen with lots of food (we were eating left overs because they gave so much). Insider tip--If you're in the mood for something with a kick, get a bagel with tuna and ask for the house hot sauce they make. Very tasty.

Ordered a platter for a family brunch since we love their food and their staff is so friendly. Several affordable options, easy ordering, reasonable delivery fee. The platter was beautiful, plentiful and arrived early. My bagel connoisure family were very happy and very full! Neal called on Monday to make are everything was satisfactory. Very impressed.

By far the best bagels I've had in Maryland. The tuna salad is also the best I've had ... EVER ... especially if you ask for a generous slobbering of their special hot sauce. A great joint run buy a great guy.

Neal's has the best bagels around. Weekends are always busy so get here early. The bagels have a nice outer crust and a chewy inside. It is the perfect texture. No matter what the occasion is, I always get an extra bakers dozen to keep in the freezer. I put them in freezer bags and take one out whenever I am in the mood for a good bagel. My favorite is the sesame but all the flavors are great. The black and white can get a little dry so it is not my favorite although it has a really nice flavor of pumpernickel. The cream cheese selection is good. I love the lox spread and always get a toasted sesame with extra lox spread. Yum. The spread lasts over a week in the fridge ( if it isn't eaten before then). If you like a good quality bagel, this is the place to go. I would give this place 5 stars however, it could use a good cleaning.

It's located across from Quince Orchard HS, so several HSers are frequent customers, as well as the regular visitors like myself. It is a family owned place with some chairs and tables to sit and enjoy your delicious breakfast or lunch. Neal's Bagels is named after the owner's son. Steve, the owner, is really nice and the wife is really funny. Steve is there all the time and I've only seen the wife on weekends. I was introduced to this place by a friend less than a year ago and I continue to go almost all the time. In fact, I am eating a bagel from Neal's as I type! The bagels are made in their shop, on top of their large variety of cream cheese flavors (low-fat included) and several deli salads like tuna, egg, and chicken. It's out of my way before work, but it's worth the commute for a bagel and coffee. Since people are constantly in and out, the coffee pumps can get empty, but the wait for a refill isn't too long. Here's why I love this place: 1. The bagels are two sided so you get a treat from both the top AND the bottom. I've only seen one other bagel shop do this. 2. I loveee light chive. Many places make it with plain cream cheese and chop up chive which is boring... But at Neal's, their light chive is flavored cream cheese with chives in it. HEAVEN! :) You must go in a try it out if you're in the area.

I will never do business here again!!!!!! I stopped by Neal's Bagel to pick up some Bagels for the guys in the office since we all had to work Christmas Day. I called to verify that they were open since most places are closed on Christmas Day (So I will give them 3 Stars for that). However, after arriving there I ordered a couple of Bagels and the guy at the register was Straight Out Rude. I don't know about any anyone else but I have for my Money & Receipt to be tossed at me when I'm holding my hands out to receive my change, I thought it was all in my head when he gave me my change, but when he repeated himself with tossing my receipt on the counter also..... I clearly knew it was not in my head. Regardless of how good the bagels are customer service is a big part of my experience. So from here on I'll have to pass on Neal's Bagels!!!!!!!!!

Henry is the only legitimate reviewer. I'm from NYC and read some good reviews so I went. The bagels stink unless you normally get yours at mcd's. I also tried royal the next day and they stink also. Imagine neither place would cook a real egg for my son. Both places microwaved some sort of egg thing. Are eggs that hard to make? The place is filthy The tables had to be wiped down by me and my son. YooHoo, nope. Cream cheese fresh out of a tub from a factory. Bad service slow. Owner admitted to feeling sick yesterday but luckily he was there to touch my food. The board of health should shut this hole down. It's sad that they call themselves a bagel store.

We were previously loyal customers of Royal Bagel Bakery in Germantown, but ever since new owners took over, it's not the same. And we won't go back. So it was time to find a new bagel shop. We headed to Neal's with moderate expectations, based on internet reviews. I was happy to find a hole in the wall, no frills bagelry, that looked authentic and had no frou-frou flavors (orange, cranberry, and other weird flavors are not bagel flavors!). Service was a bit slow, but it was New Years Day and they were clearly short-staffed. But the owner was polite and friendly and got my order together quickly, so I can't really complain. The place isn't the cleanest, but is any NY Deli really clean? No. And don't plan on eating your bagel here unless it's nice outside, as the "seating area" is really just a table with 2 chairs. The bagels are a nice size, dense and just a tad chewy, and have toppings on both sides. And the price is just right. 99 cents a piece, or $10.99 for a baker's dozen. They also offer an array of cream cheeses, many of which are lite, so that's always an added bonus. We will continue to frequent this little shop for the delicious bagels.

Their whitefish salad. Oh. My God. This could possibly be the best whitefish salad I've ever had, and I've had my fair share of whitefish salad. The bagels, in my opinion, are better than the ones offered at Bethesda Bagel, but not enough to drive out of your way if you don't live in the area. The long lines are a testament to the quality and bc they do a lot of business you're bound to come across a fresh batch of just cooked bagels (ask them what's hot when you go in there). The coffee is subpar FYI.

Best bagels I've had in ages. Am particularly fond of their "Flats" - they squash their bagels flat allowing them to have more toppings (yum!) & adding a crispness that is a neat alternative to their regular bagels. Flats are only on weekends though beginning at 8 am & go early because they sell like wildfire!!

  • Lindsey C.

You can't get NY bagels in Maryland. But Neal's Bagels makes a good substitute in the meantime. I gave 4 stars because the store is tiny.

    (4)
  • Monica R.

The long lines that sometimes snake outside the door can be a sign that many people are devoted to this place. The bagels are made in house and the cream cheese / egg salad / whitefish are all very good. It's tough to leave this place without getting a dozen bagels to go.

    (5)
  • Red F.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, their white fish salad kicks every other white fish salad's butt. Seriously, it's worth leaving your cozy apartment at 7:22 am, driving 20 minutes, mingling with morning traffic, waiting 3 minutes and then driving back home to enjoy it. It's pretty much what I've always wanted white fish salad to taste like; ridiculously good on a toasted sesame bagel with tomato and onion.

  • L. F.

The bagels here are delicious. Which is why I keep going back. If they were any less delicious I would definitely not buy food here. The store needs a major deep cleaning. It is really bad. I am not sure how they pass health inspections. I would give Neal's 5 stars if it was cleaned up.

*****2.5 stars***** Eh. Neal's Bagels was almost okay. The everything bagel had a nice crunch to it and was soft in the inside. However, it wasn't anything special. My Nova Scotia lox and cream cheese was good, but didn't make me say MmMmMm. The amount of lox I got was pretty small and it was mainly on one side of my bagel. I think I actually got more tomato slices than lox. The cream cheese was also lacking as well. It seemed like they were in such a rush to make the sandwich that it was poorly spread on there. On a Sunday morning, the line was out the door but it moved fairly quickly.

If you're ok with what ends up being ALWAYS a wait....their bagels are hands down the best in town. When I'm hungover but need to work, I find an Egg, Bacon and Cheese Pumpernickel bagel generally clears things right up. Neal's Bagels: Making it easier to work hungover for years!

  • victoria j.

Maybe it was because I went to this bagel shop with high expectations... but I didnt think there was anything extraordinary about this place. Yes, they have special sides for sale, such as pate, coleslaw, egg salad, etc. But the bagels themselves aren't all that. I prefer Einsteins bagels over Neals. I had a toasted everything bagel with chives cream cheese and a bagel with salmon and cream cheese. The first few bites of the chives cream cheese bagel was good, but I kinda got sick of it after that. The salmon bagel was just ok. I honestly think I can make it better at home.
