This restaurant has an average tableside show. Their hibachi chefs seem rather bored with the presentation. The food is standard and tasty. Their sushi is quite good. If they do their lunch buffet it is The Best lunch you will get around here.

OK. What you need to do is either come here for Hibachi during dinner or the sushi lunch buffet. Anything else leads to a 2 star experience. The Sushi lunch buffet is worth every dollar, of course it's only $10... but still. They have a decent variety of sushi and rolls in addition to some Korean side vegetables and hot foods. It gets packed during lunch, they'll always have seating, however, it just means you may have to wait a little longer for the sushi to come out. Service can be a bit cold but you can be sure your water cup will stay filled!

So much no at this place. The raw sushi tasted unpleasantly fishy/spoilt. I may have thrown up a little after the first taste (at which point, I refused to eat any of the raw rolls we ordered). The roll with real (cooked) crab was light and fresh and the service was okay (hence the 2nd star). I would never go back here for sushi. Stick with hibachi and you will probably be fine.

From the minute I walked in the door, this was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. I visited the ballston location before it closed about a year ago but that was just for sushi. I had a good experience but there but the Frederick location was horrible. The evening started with the hostess at the door (bleached hair and glasses). She was easily one of the top 5 rudest people I have ever met. The waitress that took our drink orders was underage and couldn't really answer any questions pertaining to the drink menu. I asked for a large Sapporo as was listed in the menu and I got a pint. When I questioned it I was told that it was "regular," which wasn't an option on the menu. Speaking of the menu, everything was wayyy over priced. Oh and speaking of price..."filet mignon" and "New York strip" virtually the same price? When these cuts came out they were not like any filet mignon or ny strip I had ever seen. Along with a chicken cutlet this was $26...worth $12-$15. I get that you pay for the show but I don't like dealing with a business that takes the customer for a fool. My advice to management is to take a long hard look in the mirror because if your restaurant is half empty on Valentine's Day weekend with a movie theater next door you are doing something extremely wrong.

LOVE the sushi and hibachi here !!! Probably my favorite one in Frederick. Always an exceptionally fun and exciting time anytime we've ever been here.

Awesome sushi and drinks, atmosphere is great as well. My favorite is the "tutu roll" and the "Maryland" roll. We hung out at the bar so haven't tried the Hibachi but look forward to going back.

Reserved for two people at 7 pm. Seated by 715 and ordered by 720. Waited over 30 minutes for the hibachi chef to start. Appetizer (calamari tempura) not served until halfway through the meal. My partner ordered lobster with filet mignon. Never got the filet mignon even tho hibachi chef read the orders out to everyone before cooking.

Good sushi lunch special. Lots of variety and very friendly staff. The rolls were a little messy (not rolled nicely) but tasted great. They had non sushi options, miso soup wasn't very good, but I am very particular.

My family had a wonderful meal at Matsutake tonight. For a holiday, it wasn't very crowded and we were seated immediately. The waitress was very attentive with the drinks and our cook did a very nice job on the food. Our group had a mixture of chicken, steak, shrimp, and scallop entrees and everything was excellent. We will absolutely be back!

Don't get too excited for an authentic meal to go with the "show." DISCLAIMER: We lived in Japan for three years, I worked as a chef in two restaurants there, with a fully Japanese staff. (I'm no rookie when it comes to Japanese food.) Although we were seated at a hibachi table and my spouse ordered salmon/rice/veggies from the hibachi, i was intrigued to see that we could also order items from the kitchen. Other than the salmon (who can mess up salmon?) the other items were simply not impressive. The rice was burned on the flattop grill and then served. When the Hispanic man who was "performing" the meal for us figured out I had ordered something from the kitchen, rather than the hibachi, he turned to me in front of the rest of the diners and said "you don't like my food??" The other diners looked at me like I had just eaten a live baby or something! Well, guess what Mr. knife-flingin' Hispanic/Japanese imposter.....there are 2 red meat items on the menu, a rib eye ($21) and a filet ($25)....rib eye is my FAVORITE cut....they were out of those, at 7pm?!?!? really???? I am thrilled to report the yakisoba was authentic, while the veggies in the yakisoba were clearly overcooked, the flavor was RIGHT out of Aomorri prefecture (where we lived). Feel free to get JUST the yakisoba...I ordered it with chicken and the chicken was flavorless anyway. As an app, we ordered the gyoza (pronounced gee-yo-za), regardless of the waitress correcting my spouse by saying "you mean guy-o-za?" To which he repeated "Yes, we want the gee-yo-za." The gyoza was delicious, but deep fried, not prepared "pot-sticker" style the way it's actually done. After the meal, other diners at our hibachi asked the waitress if there were also Japanese hibachi "performers" and she stated "Everyone here is Korean, except me, actually. I am 1/4 Japanese." Everyone else in the restaurant is Hispanic, Caucasian, or "other." Please understand me here...this typically would not matter to me IF the food were authentic, but this is like going to Taco Bell for Mexican food...you get the idea. I asked the other diners if they knew of any other hibachi restaurants and could recommend any places, the response was Benihana's. I won't say more.

Went here with five other friends who wanted the Habachi experience. Well not much good to say. The staff worked at a snails pace, the prices were expensive and the entire place was filthy, all the floors, chairs and table tops were sticky. I would not suggest this place.

My favorite Hibachi restaurant ever! It may be a bit pricey but totally worth it. The food is always delicious, the chefs are always at least above average on the entertainment side, and the staff, always friendly and cheerful. Last visit was my birthday, I got an excellent cocktail, I think it was the "Screamer", the Steak and Scallop hibachi dinner, my sister ordered me some AMAZING salmon sushi, and they brought out a fancy plate of pineapple for my bday treat. I would recommend this place to anyone, especially for parties and gatherings!

I really like their AYCE sushi lunch buffet. I generally stick with the tuna and salmon California rolls. Very tasty, fresh and they keep the trays well stocked. Additionally, they serve hot food, soups, and salads on the buffet line. There always seems a crowd during lunch, so the sushi doesn't sit around and is fresh.

    (4)
  • Michael G.

Stick to the teppan yaki. I don't know about their fresh sushi but my body is still paying for what was at the sushi buffet (lived in Japan for nearly a decade). Nothing is authentic about the place (authentic, freshness, etiquette, service, etc). Just another Chinese owned, Japanese food serving restaurant (impostors, posers, copy cats, etc) For those unable to discern, no one here is actually Japanese. You might have a Chinese or someone of Hispanic descent flipping tongs to entertain you at the "hibachi", or someone correcting your Japanese relative how to pronounce Japanese menu items.

Sushi buffet was okay. Somehow, when the waiter generated the bill, he failed to account for the fact that my 8-year-old, 4-ft. tall daughter was a child. He corrected the bill after I brought his misperception to his attention.

My brother and I were stuck in Frederick during the awful snow storm back in January and this was the only restaurant that was open for dinner than night that was near the hotel my brother and I were staying in. My brother is a vegetarian, and we shared the veggie roll combo along with a couple of garden salads and miso soup. Everything was delicious! The staff was very friendly and we received our food within 10 minutes. I look forward to bringing my entire family here for dinner soon.

One of the worst dining experiences. From waiting for 30 minutes to flag down a waiter just to place a drink order, to the lackluster chef, to the waiter that ignored us for the entire dinner, to the chef not having enough food for the table (I received about a tablespoon of the vegetables), to having to flag down down the waiter to get to-go boxes and the check. Came for a special occasion and will never go back.

Staff seemed friendly, atmosphere nice. Green tea tasted burnt. Miso soup left something to be desired. If you're just getting sushi, you can't order a side of rice, only full sized, $8. We got the Philly roll, eh- kind of chewy. Futo Maki 5 pc, really good. Crunch roll, really good.

One of our favorite places! We only go for hibachi (never have had the sushi). We always get great service, delicious food, and the staff is great about any changes you might want to make. Best yum yum sauce too! The only complaint I can think of, and it's minor, is if they refill your soda it's from a pitcher that has been sitting out, so it's a little flat if you get soda. But overall the food is awesome!

We were very disappointed in our experience at Matsutake from the service to the food. To start we were barely greeted by the hostess who finally called someone else over. They seated us at a table near the door. It was chilly as the cool air blew in from the outside as customers entered and left. We asked our waitress repeatedly to get us water but it took several times before it finally arrived. We ordered drinks. The sake cup was chipped so we asked for another. She bought us one but as she walked towards us, I noticed she dipped her finger in to the base before delivering it to the table (perhaps to dry it). On seeing this we asked for a replacement and she did the same thing to it. I guess you could say we got extra portions as I noticed several pieces of sticky rice on one of the plates before we had ordered anything. The soup was flavorless and the salad consisted of pale green lettuce and unripe tomato drenched in dressing. Our cook made attempts at humor but sadly, it did not work for me. For one thing I noticed he cleaned the table with a rag and then pitched it under his serving cart where it lapped on top of the large plate of vegetables. Then he put one of the empty plates directly on top of the vegetables he was going to cook. To make matters worse he used a "peeing" rubber boy to put water on the table. I really didn't enjoy the visualization. I don't like potty humor. And I can just imagine how slimy the inside of that "kitchen gadget" was. I doubt it gets cleaned. It was just gross. Prices on the menu were higher than other hibachi restaurants with a $2.00 up charge for fried rice. Portions were generous but I had lost most of my appetite. At the end of the night we had to flag down the waitress for the bill. Sorry to say it was a very sad, overpriced experience and the lack of cleanliness made it one restaurant we will not be returning to again.

I've enjoyed dinner here numerous times but this review will be about the glorious AYCE sushi lunch buffet. I am always excited when I have a day off from work during the weekdays because that means I can come to Matsutake and gorge myself on delicious sushi. There is an astounding amount of choices on the buffet, including my favorite -- crispy salmon skin. The buffet also includes miso soup, salad and a small assortment of hibachi-style selections. Since it's a buffet, I've never had a problem with service. My soda has always been topped off in a timely fashion.

Me and my wife went there yesterday (4/17) for lunch after visiting vintage furniture warehouse on the same street. We live in Germantown, MD and go very often to Yuraku Sushi which is excellent. We were expecting similar experience, but really disappointed with their sushi and overall atmosphere. Other food they serve may be good, but the sushi was not that great compared to other places we had sushi around DC area.

I went there with a friend to have sushi buffet. It's great it's has a lot of selections and the line can be long. Depending the day and time. There this lady who's or was a waitress and she's very rude. I went there last year though. Other than that. It's a nice and fun place to eat at.

The idea of Sushi buffet is appetizing, but this place doesn't deliver what you are craving. I am giving it two stars because: 1. The buffet is less than exciting. 2. Not enough noticeable variety. 3. I was there for lunch, the soda was flat every time (refilled 3 times!). 4. I had to look for people to get refills and even get the check. I was kinda left alone. 5. Sushi is made in a cheap manner. It looks like the Gas station sushi.

My husband and I were passing through the area, stopped at a coffee shop to work, and noticed this place. I regret eating here. We love sushi, but we failed when we didn't think to check reviews before dining here. We had spent the whole week looking over reviews, and we didn't remember for this one, err. Anywho, the food looked and tasted gross. I'm not even joking; I'm hoping I don't get sick. The staff was also unpleasant. I'm not even sure how this place has 3 stars. Go get sushi elsewhere! What a misrepresentation.

I normally never give just one star, unless a place is just really terrible. This is it, folks-the worst "Japanese" you will ever eat. The teriyaki sauce is just soy sauce with a little sugar. The tempura is just onion rings. The service is beyond terrible-I've been waiting for 20 minutes or so for a refill. The wifi doesn't work. Never ever eat here, not even once. It's not worth it.

I came in for a late dinner this evening after a long day of walking around DC and was majorly craving some sushi while heading back on Red Line. This restaurant is near my hotel so I thought to give it a try. I ordered 3 uni, 1 toro, 1 ikura and 1 hamachi along with a hot tea. The meal also came with complimentary soup and salad brought out first. The miso soup tasted as it should though the small salad, it was flooded with dressing and I wasn't a big fan of that and ended up eating less than half of it. For the fish portion, the hamachi and ikura were good as was the uni (my personal favorite) but for today, it was all about the toro. Some restaurants don't even carry it so I was both surprised and a little worried to order it. I decided to give it a try since the price was just $12.95 for 2 pieces which is actually pretty inexpensive. It was really tasty and I was impressed with it and would have ordered another but I was getting full. Personally, I don't like to be bothered much while eating dinner, especially sushi. It's kind of weird but it's just how I am. My waitress, Amoii, was kind and checked on me just the right amount of times. Overall, I thought it was a nice dinner, fairly priced and pretty tasty.

We have been going to Matsutake for several years - always loving their sushi bar - fresh, clean, right temp (sushi not too cold not too warm- important) - since kids have grown we do not Hibachi anymore not our thing but the lunch buffett is very good too - smaller sushi pieces and we get there early - however things are starting to change. Staff is "out there" most times. New hostess up front is good - pleasant helpful but not much else on customer service. Went last night before seeing the a movie and have to say - done hill. Tables dirty -moved 2x's. Nats flying and my tuna sushi was NOT GOOD. my tempera roll was ok but nothing was great - salad and soup... Mehhhh. After the fishy dry tuna - I lost my appetite. The hubby and I said it will be along time before we are back. Booooo they need to clean it up and get back to bascis - miss my good sushi restaurant.... Now just heard the hubby has upset stomach this a.m. I am glad I took only one bite and not more

I enjoyed my meal at Matsutake. I had a combination of filet mignon, lobster and shrimp. Everything was flavorful and cooked as ordered. The chef was friendly and was willing to take a back seat to our ongoing conversation. The service was average. The atmosphere was pleasant. I'd return.

First time eating here tonight. Signing my bill, somehow a small beer costs $10 each. I didn't have a Menu to double check but this is way too expensive for a small beer. I ordered 2 beers for $20. Was this a mistake? Yes, it was. I went home and slept on it. Called back and honestly, the waitress selected the Large Beer price and not the Small Beer price. Woah, if you got a bit tipsy or were not paying attention, that would have been really bad. But they know this was clearly a honest mistake and are owning up to it well. I will go back for my money back on the over charge. Point is consumers, wherever you go, check your tab for accuracy. This evening she was working hard on a big table next to my order and seemed distracted. Consider it was an honest mistake and move on. The food was pretty good. I will go back.

My boyfriend and I love this place! We go here at least 1 time a month. Always a good time. The cooks are super good, Jimmy who is our regular is super personable and makes the experience even funner. Wait staff could be a little more attentive with drink refills, etc but overall an awesome experience every-time! Food is always good portions, cooked well and seems fresh.

Had the lunch buffet. The selection was awful. Trays were empty but they weren't refilling it because they were closing down in about an hour even though there were still several people there. The sushi rolls were mostly rice and the fish (if there was any) was paper thin. They left the bill on our table about 15 mins after we sat and then pestered us to pay when we hadn't even come close to finished eating. Service was non existant. Yuraku in Germantown is much much better! I will not eat here again.

Poor service and management! This was my first time eating eating at Matsutake Sushi and Steak. I read great reviews and chose this restaurant for my birthday with family and friends. I ordered food to go and went in the restaurant to pick up my sushi. They confused my order and I received too little sushi anf the wrong types of sushi. I explained that it was my birthday and that I did not have an extra hour for them to re cook every thing. The manager, who was the sushi chef, came out to argue with me! In front of the hostess, people at the bar, and people waiting, this manager proved his point and was very rude. Although I tried to be a happy first time customer, I sadly walked out of the restaurant and told them that I could absolutely not pay for this kind of service. I can eat sushi elsewhere!

We stopped in for dinner before a movie and dined in. It was great! Happy friendly staff, great fresh food. We had two sushi rolls for an appetizer and I had the rib eye steak dinner. It came with miso, salad, rice, noodles, veggies, and yummy dipping sauces. I had fresh unsweetened iced tea, and the Japanese extra carbonated melon soda. My hubby had the regular sushi sashimi plate and complimented how fresh the fish was. He wished it would have been more of a variety of fish, but I noticed white fish dolphin, salmon, yellowtail, tuna, etc... I told him not everybody wants raw octopus with their plate. Lol It was a great time.

My to-go place for sushi and Hibachi in Frederick. If you are going JUST for sushi - better off at Densha down the street. But this is our local spot that we love for a quick meal at the bar. Never had a bad roll here. Densha is good for experimenting and enjoying the conveyor belt. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Hibachi is better than the other places I've been to in Frederick. Staff and chefs are always friendly. Great overall atmosphere as well.

The gyoza was delicious, but deep fried, not prepared "pot-sticker" style the way it's actually done.

Good sushi lunch special. Lots of variety and very friendly staff. The rolls were a little messy (not rolled nicely) but tasted great. They had non sushi options, miso soup wasn't very good, but I am very particular.

The food is your usual Asian fare but the chefs are why I love this place! Jimmy and the gang make this an absolute enjoyable time EVERY TIME! I love Matsutake. You will too, unless something is wrong with you.

Completely disorganized wait staff. Our table waited for over an hour to get any level of service, because they forgot about our part of the room. All the drinks ordered had issues.

AMAZING sushi buffet!!! Will get pretty busy especially during weekday lunch time when they knock down the price. Usually I stray away from anything with the word "buffet" in it's title, but this is not one to miss. Only issue is sometimes they are slow to refill their sushi. Always fresh and good value to beat.

This restaurant has an average tableside show. Their hibachi chefs seem rather bored with the presentation. The food is standard and tasty. Their sushi is quite good. If they do their lunch buffet it is The Best lunch you will get around here.

This is strictly a lunch review. This is a good once-in-a-while lunch time choice for me. I generally go for the sushi buffet which is usually pretty good but sort of expensive for a lunch (around $15 after tax and tip). The fish is fresh and they have a decent selection. The rolls and nigiri are pretty standard buffet-type things (yellow tail, salmon, tuna, california, etc.). Don't expect things like Rainbow Rolls or Dragon Rolls. You can get them off the menu but they don't come with the buffet. There is also some miso soup, vegetable tempura and some random dishes that look more Chinese. They also do the hibachi grill which is always fun. The food from that is pretty standard I think. It's good but not great. One thing I don't like is the tea they serve. It tends to be a little burnt tasting. I don't know if that's because they brew it when the water is too hot or it's just the type of tea they use. The decor is nice and it never gets too crowded, except maybe on Fridays. When it does get crowded they can be a little slow about replacing sushi that is out and because of the presentation of all the food you can end up waiting in line for a little bit. The service can be a bit slow, especially if you're going for the buffet, but they are pretty friendly.

The atmosphere was great! The place was nice! The chef was great with a ton of personality. We went when it was busy so I don't want to be too hard on the lousy and slow service of the waitress. The food was average. It wasn't good enough to make me want to return. The next time I want hibachi I will go to Sakura, or Ziki in Rockville near my work.

i came here a while back and had a bad experience with the sushi and the huge two person drink. first the sushi i got actually came in foil...and the rice was hard/crunchy it was and still is the worse sushi i've ever had (even worse than Costco sushi rolls!) and then the huge drink they have had little to no alcohol in it! im a total light weight and i couldn't taste a thing in it so don't waste your money on that! had a rude waitress that gave us terrible service on a super dead night and pretty much the experience was so bad i've never given them a second chance.

There is a certain je ne sais quoi (if not a caveat emptor) to eating at an all you can eat sushi buffet. Basically, you're rolling the dice. I had my trepidations, and I forged ahead. The experience was pretty good. I got there pretty late, and there were not too many people left. A prominent sign on the buffet explained they do not let the food sit out endlessly, but you have to wonder. I tried several rolls, listing toward the cooked side, but trying some raw as well. It was all tasty. The hot food looked the worse off for arriving so late - basically the dregs left over, and not much to recommend it. As I was close to finishing, the server (they were all very nice) asked if I wanted any more food as the buffet was closing. I sauntered over for a last couple of pieces, and was please to see the staff descending on the buffet once it was "closed". Definitely a good sign that they wanted to eat it. Nice folks, decent food, good selection of sushi.

My husband took me out for a "fantastic lady day" and I chose to eat here since we didn't have our toddler in tow. They had several big parties seated and placed us with another couple in the middle of the dining room. After 40 minutes of sitting at a table (50 minutes for the couple next to us), not one person came over to even acknowledge that we were there. Finally, we got up to ask if someone was going to serve us and the bus boy waited on us the whole time. Due to his limited English and the fact that he was not a trained server, he couldn't understand half of our order. The only time the manager came over was to ask my husband what he ordered to drink because the bus boy didn't understand what he said (which was a Crown and coke and he told the bus boy 3 times). I rated them 2 stars because they get 1 star for the food and 1 star for the chef and his entertaining cooking. At the end of the meal We were so upset that we ended up paying $94 plus tip for such a terrible experience. I would have overlooked it had the manager at least come over to apologize for the wait. Needless to say, we will not be returning and I suggest if you see people in there, find somewhere else to eat unless you have all the money and time in the world to waste.

So me and hubby decided to stop by here to get a quick drink before the movies. We got seated by the bar and we Oder our drinks and a appetizer it took four server to ask us constantly what was our Oder and kept saying its coming out and it was so horrible like how long do ppl take to make a drink really? It just so long just to get one drink and I didn't like the experience the waiters look so lost and don't know what they were doing at all!!!

Matsutake is such an entertaining dinner establishment. I love eating with family at the Hibachi grill. You do sit with other patrons that might not be with your party, but it isn't awkward at all. Everyone is having such a great time with the chef that it does end up feeling like we all came to dinner together. The chef will do fun tricks and effects with the food and fire. Sometimes the fire can be a little much for the little tikes but overall its a great time. I gave this restaurant a 4 because the food is a bit salty and sometimes the servers get a little overwhelmed...it is seemingly understaffed when it gets super busy. Overall, good food, great experience, and a fun time!

Two words: roach infestation. It's bad enough that you sort of take a risk when eating sushi. But sushi in a place where there were roachES (several). One by the wall and another by the sushi bar!!! This was during a lunch rush, roaches typically don't galavant around during a time when the bunch of people are present. They tend to wait at night and gather in little of groups like a poker game. So if these guys are out at this time of day...simply confirms that there are a lot of roaches in there! The customers pointed the roaches out to the servers. So the servers got napkin and got the roach, threw the napkin away and proceeded to the credit card machine to process the payment for a table WITHOUT washing their hands!!!! That's just too risky for me. Aaaarrrgh, needless to say i'm not coming back here regardless of how good this place is, and too bad because their sushi buffet was pretty good.

I wish there was a way to leave zero stars for this place. Went in for lunch and didn't realize it is a buffet during the week, this by itself was not a big deal, the food however was terrible. The fish in most of the sushi, including the cooked shrimp, tasted like ammonia and was inedible. The service was awful! The waitresses were surly and nasty. There were no clean tongs on the sushi bar and they kept telling us to use the dirty ones. I have a lot of questions about the cleanliness and food safety in this place.

I ordered two somewhat creative rolls, the Lasagna Roll and the Samurai Roll. Oddly, I found them both poorly tasting, despite me normally liking all the individual ingredients in the rolls. I wondered how you could ever make the combo of ingredients taste bad, but they managed. I've just had much better rolls elsewhere. Perhaps they have much better fare, but the fairly quiet waitress indicated my choices would be quite good. While the chefs were generating laughs and giant flames at the cooking tables on the other side of the restaurant, the glum-looking sushi chef seemed to trudge through his work and the slow wait staff seemed overextended in trying to attend to diners in various sections of the sprawling restaurant. The decor was fairly nice, but the lighting was several notches brighter than I would like in the sushi seating area, highlighting issues such as ugly stains on their drop-ceiling tiles, etc. I really wanted to like this place, but I won't go out of my way to return.

Like most Japanese restaurants, this one is run by Koreans. This is not necessarily a slam, as I've had really excellent sushi in Korean-owned establishments (Sushi-hama in Tucson stands out in this regard). And Matsutake is a perfectly adequate sushi source. As mentioned by previous reviewers, the fish was fresh enough, the rice was decent, and the service unobtrusive. Would I go back? No, I wouldn't make a special trip. I ate here because I wanted to try their sushi, and it was within walking distance of my hotel. (But the all-you-can-eat lunch special may tempt me when I'm in town again.)

Aside from the fact that I do not like the fact that they are about 15% more expensive to eat at than Miyako's nearby, I do find their food quality and portions to be on par with their arch rival. It's not really Japanese cuisine, but it's close enough. And for Americans, I suppose it's good enough. Parking in the evenings and weekends is always a nightmare, but at least the wait times to be fed are not. If you want decent food at a slightly steep price and need to go to the movies next door, then this is a sure bet. If you want to save a few bucks, head over to the FSK mall where you can at least find a place to park..

He said," Food was great to start off. I had the steak teriyaki and it is a very healthy serving. The coke I ordered was flat...that was probably due to the fact that they have a pitcher of coke laying out for probably hours. Now they say they don't use MSG in their food, but my stomach has a MSG detector because soon after eating there I was in the bathroom for an hour. That has only happened twice before at places that use low quality food. This place needs to come down on the prices of their food as well. Everything just seemed automated not unique." She said," I love these types of places that cook infront of you. I got the steak which was pretty awesome. I would have put 4 stars but my boyfriend got sick afterwards so yeah...other than that, good place to eat."

I used to visit this restaurant often, but after my last experience will not return. There is always a wait and when you are seated the service is still very slow. Last time I got filet and shrimp with fried rice. There was no seasoning, the steak was tough, shrimp were undercooked and rice was bland and undercooked. The seafood sauce (my favorite!) was like water. The soup is tofu and salad has water for dressing. I can say with confidence nothing in this meal was acceptable. I will only visit Mikyako for Japanese food! yum!!!

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit of a sushi snob and am quite picky when it comes to fine Japanese food. But I'll happily take decent Japanese food. True Japanese restaurants are hard to find (and truly good sushi even harder). That being said, Matsutake really misses the bar. Like most "Japanese" establishments in the area, the ownership isn't Japanese you'd be hard pressed to find a real Japanese chef in the house. I've dined a few times at their "hibachi" bar and found the food to be.. meh. The steak was just not tasteful, tough, overdone and almost gamey. The preparation and show wastes a perfectly good cut of meat. The chicken is O.K. The sushi is inconsistent, at best. The quality of the fish is decent but the real problems lie in the rice. The fundamental base of decent sushi is the rice. It should hold together, and be a good balance of barely sweet and barely sour. Some days their rice is passable, other days I am in awe at how my sushi nearly falls apart upon the touch. While specialty rolls are an anchor in American-style sushi restaurants, the rolls at Matsutake are frighteningly gauche. Occasionally I get desperate for sushi and venture out Almost every time, I am gently reminded of why I stay away. Better stick to some of the establishments in Bethesda and towards the District. The kitchen food is good enough to make me want to eat here. The staff is usually friendly enough. The real reason to dine here is for the entertainment factor, rather than the food.

All you can eat sushi, I love this place. It can be crowded, especially on a friday, but with sushi at this price you can expect that. For my $15 I probably eat $50 of sushi if I bought it at night time prices. A great selection from tuna rolls to eel. The hot food bar next to the sushi bar is really mediocre, and few people except the beginners eat there. The adjancent Benihana style chop em up tables are really noisy and need some sound proofing. I wish I cound find more places like this where I do contract work.

Ate there last night with a large party. A friend and I both had the filet mignon (and had it cooked to well done), and are both suffering from severe food poisoning today. No one else in our party had the steak, and no one else is sick. We have contacted the health department and filed complaints. Will NEVER, ever eat here again. I am SO thankful I didn't feed my 3 year old daughter from my plate last night! I won't even lament about the fact that they brought us our "appetizer" sushi roll as we were paying our check, even after reminding the server about it several times. Glad I didn't eat that either!

My experience with Matsutake is admittedly limited (I have eaten in there once, and taken out sushi two other times) but each time I've had their food, it's been nothing short of amazing. Matsutake is technically a steakhouse, but I may never get to try their steak because the sushi is SO GOOD! I'm admittedly a sushi lightweight, focusing mainly on maki (rolled sushi), but I can't imagine that the deliciousness of their shrimp tempura rolls and Philly rolls doesn't carry over to any kind of sushi you might care to order. The atmosphere is great -- clean and elegant with just a hint of Japanese quirkiness. The staff are friendly and seem happy to be serving you. Calling to order take-out sushi is painless (and I usually HATE doing business over the phone!) I never expected to find some of the best sushi I'd ever eaten in Frederick of all places, but here it is at Matsutake!

This place is great! We try to go here once a week for Sushi. The real key is to hit the place for lunch. For $15 you get a drink and all you can eat sushi. While all you can eat is not usually associated with quality, here it is pretty good. I look forward to every Friday, thumbs up in my book!

It's a japanese steak house but we go there exclusively for the sushi. One of the sushi chef's (he introduces himself as john) is absolutely excellent. He has dozens of new types of nigiri, maki and techniques to go along with them that are not on the menu. Sit at the sushi bar and ask him to make whatever he feels like and you wont be dissapointed. Very good for east caost sushi.

The food is fairly good. Try the Shrimp Lover's Combo for Sushi and the Yakisoba noodles. However, everything seems pretty pricey. Also, although there are daily specials which are less expensive, our waitress said absolutely nothing about it. It was written on a board posted over the bar area which was hard to see depending on where your table is. People had to get up and read for themselves. The service was curt but they do take care of you. The best part, If you order a drink straight up, they really fill your glass to the top and not water it down. That's a first for me in any restaurant and then of course everything becomes better!

  • Amber W.

The bar was well stocked and the staff was very friendly. The service was quick but it wasn't really busy. The Philadelphia Roll was fabulous, the spicy tuna was mushy and warm. The Rock' n Roll was good, I would order something different. I didn't like the mixed fish, but I think that is a personal preference. The dessert choices are limited. They only had two of their 8 ice cream flavors...I want to try the Japanese steak, so I'll be back!

Back in the day, my friends and i would go here on a monthly basis. Our trip would consist of Matsutake, movie followed by Maggie Moo's. When i moved to the Rockville area, that soon changed. When going back to Matsutake i had high expectations considering how awesome i used to remember it to be. But those were soon to be crushed upon walking through the doors. My friends and i made reservations worrying that it would have packed. But being an hour early the place was as empty as ever. Being seated immediately with two other groups. Service was alright i guess. Nothing i can remember standing out. For the place being as empty as it was, it sure did take the chef a long time to get to our table. I ordered the Hibachi Chicken and Double Fried Rice. I can't remember specifically how much it was but what i can remember was that it was definitely around $30. Not to mention that there's an extra charge for the fried rice now. With the fried rice now having an extra charge to it, i was told later on when i brought it up to the waiters attention. It was outrageous. With spending that kind of money for chicken, it really was just for the entertainment value in things rather then the actual food. The chicken was extremely bland and dry. Not to mention as it was cooking i was wondering when he would take it off the grill because long behold it was over cooked. The fried rice was lacking flavor as well. Needed more salt and pepper or soy sauce. Personally i dump the Seafood Sauce they give you all over my fried rice which made things a lot better. The vegetables were good. A little to soft rather then al dente. Miso soup was okay. The "complimentary" tossing shrimp was tough which means it was a bit over cooked as well. Not to mention my friends order was completely messed up that the chef had to ask the waiter to go back and make an order of shrimp. Overall i've had better. The only reason i'm giving it a 2 star is because of my past experiences here rather then my most recent one.

Completely disorganized wait staff. Our table waited for over an hour to get any level of service, because they forgot about our part of the room. All the drinks ordered had issues.

This restaurant has an average tableside show. Their hibachi chefs seem rather bored with the presentation. The food is standard and tasty. Their sushi is quite good. If they do their lunch buffet it is The Best lunch you will get around here.

I would have overlooked it had the manager at least come over to apologize for the wait. i came here a while back and had a bad experience with the sushi and the huge two person drink. first the sushi i got actually came in foil...and the rice was hard/crunchy it was and still is the worse sushi i've ever had (even worse than Costco sushi rolls!) and then the huge drink they have had little to no alcohol in it! im a total light weight and i couldn't taste a thing in it so don't waste your money on that! had a rude waitress that gave us terrible service on a super dead night and pretty much the experience was so bad i've never given them a second chance.

He has dozens of new types of nigiri, maki and techniques to go along with them that are not on the menu. Sit at the sushi bar and ask him to make whatever he feels like and you wont be dissapointed. Very good for east caost sushi.

The sushi at Matsutake is very good. My teriyaki steak was tough and overdone. I will definitely go back... but just for the sushi.
