Since fine dining in Gettysburg proper is unknown to me, had to drive 8 miles to Emmitsburg, MD for special dinner tonight. Special tonight is crab stuffed flounder (see photo) and very good, well prepared, moist though light seasoned. Note the fresh rosemary, thyme and miniature pepper garnish! Our server Scott states owner grows this wonderful garniture comes from gardens around restaurant. The tiny pepper, beware! This will put more than "a glow in your mouth" as Julia Child famously said. Good hot bread, Caesar salad very good, crab stuffed broiled mushrooms are worth trying. Wine prices fair though few choices. I've been here several times over past few years and this was best experience so far, Scott our server was not just friendly but quite professional and had great insight to menu choices. When in Gettysburg and you want a fine dinner, drive to Maryland.

This is the second year we held a company dinner here. Atmosphere and food were very good. The staff went above and beyond to make sure everyone was taken care of. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a quaint evening out or a large group.

If you're staying in Gettysburg, I highly recommend taking the short drive down to this wonderful spot. The food was absolutely great and the servers could not have been nicer. A very nice country dinner spot with a romantic fireplace. Try the cream of crab soup and the chicken florentine!

I was there in Dec 2014 with a group from the AARP Parkville chapter, there were forty of us in our group. The restaurant was decorated for the holidays and was beautiful. We all had a great time, the food was great and the servers were the best.Everyone in the group was very happy with the food and the service, and that is amazing in itself to get forty people to agree on something. Love The Carriage House Inn and hope to get back there again soon.

Great service and outstanding food. Stuffed mushroom was yummy! Mediterranean flat bread was great and fresh bread melted in your mouth!

Came here for two meals in a row! Scott was our waiter in the evening and was very patient, helpful, and accommodating during our meal. When we came for lunch, we got our food quickly and it was all very good. Dinner, however, was awesome. The seafood is delicious and very fresh. The crab dip and coconut shrimp were amazing - I would eat those all day. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll definitely be stopping by.

This was our second Thanksgiving at the Carriage House Inn. It is really nice to go out and not have to cook and clean all day. My favorite part of the meal here is the crab dip and pita chips. Honestly, I could just skip the rest of the traditional feast even though those are done well. Being that we partake in the buffet, some items are better than others. Seafood dishes, spot on - which is unusual for a buffet. Turkey is a bit dry but some gravy cures that issue. Other meat options included chicken tenders and ham. Salad and veggie selection available, most are good. If you pace yourself, huge dessert selection. Overall, great option for Thanksgiving which is tasty, convenient, and fairly reasonable.

Perfect anniversary dinner. Service was excellent, food was delicious, and there was a wonderful piano player making it very romantic. We would definitely recommend to others for a special night.

I picked the right spot for my wife's birthday dinner. Great atmosphere and charm in the building. The staff was polite and attentive to our needs. Great menu and the seafood was outstanding. Crab cakes for me and lobster tail and crab for the birthday girl. A sign at the entrance requests that mobile phones be turned off or put on vibrate so as not to interrupt their guests. I really liked that idea...except then the piano player began playing throughout our meal. She was really good but never stopped playing. It became very annoying and made it hard to have a conversation. How about you play 3 songs and take a 15 minute break. I would have rather heard cell phones ringing. Well maybe not.

***WEDDING RECEPTION REVIEW*** I had my wedding with the Carriage House a couple weeks ago and the service was above and beyond! I had a lot of family and friends who came from overseas and out-of-state who said the meal they had was the best they ever eaten. The catering staff and Billie Joe went out of their way to make sure my guests were welcomed and were enjoying themselves. I couldn't have pictured a wedding that would be better than to have it here. I highly recommend this site for weddings. Their food is fantastic and their service was outstanding. No discrepancies whatsoever.

Great food! Large family get together all had wonderful meal and Ashley and other staff really did a nice job taking care of our large group. My only complaint was the management has elected to provide a "easy tip calculator" on the bill that INCLUDES the taxes as part of the suggested tip. Really, should customers tip on the taxes paid to the state too?

Only had dessert but it was divine! Homemade red velvet cake with a light yet creamy frosting. Service was also great!

My mother and I ate here for Easter. The food was the worst I've had in a long time. We both ordered the crab cakes which were very dry. The vegetable medley was over cooked and colorless. The plate of food looked nothing like the pictures featured on this site and the food was just warm. I chose this restaurant based on the rating from Yelp but walked away very disappointed. The cost for two crab cake dinners and two cups of soup with tip was $80.00! My mother is the sweetest and never complains... She said it was awful and she could have bought some flowers with the money she wasted.

We went here with my father, he had been there with a group from church and thought that we may like it. The place is typical for older building from the time period - late 1800's. The place has a nice fireplace in the main dining room, there is a side dining room if you have a larger group of people and would like to be separated. The bathroom was very clean. We all had the crab cake platter (same size crab cake on the sandwich that comes with fries) that came with red potatoes along with fresh vegetables. The crab cake passed all three of us! Very good! I also had a cup of cream of crab soup and it too was very good. Note: two of us have ate crab meat (both in shell and out) / crab soup (both Manhattan or cream) for over 50 years and are from Maryland - my husband has only had crab for 25 years. With that said - there have been places even in Maryland that can't pass out liking. Yes, we will come back to this place again for a change of place to eat crab cakes. Quite a few in Hagerstown doesn't make the cut - however, there is one place that we go to which is closer than The Carriage House Inn for us. But if you are in the area, YES do stop here and try it out - we do recommend the crab cake and soup.

The place was very busy for lunch on a Saturday but they did well in accommodating our large group of 20+. With a range of different orders, all enjoyed their food and noted the large servings. The favorite was crab cakes. Service also was very good! Reservations definitely needed on Saturday.

Great prime rib but served luke warm as were the vegetables.

This place was built in 1857, which I find pretty cool. It didn't start off as restaurant; it has been a variety of things over time. The service was average; our waiter was sweet, but not super attentive. The cream of crab soup was pretty good. The sandwich made up of melted crab and cheese on croissant bread was very bland...but once I asked for Old Bay...it was MUCH tastier. The food was good, but not great...same with the service...so definitely a 3-star restaurant.

I go here for my birthday practically every year. And I do love it. The food is consistently good and the service is usually pretty prompt as well. I am partial to the pecan crusted rockfish and the prime rib. Both are delicious. I also love their mushrooms that come swimming in butter. It's not super fancy nor super casual and everyone comes away from the table feeling pretty satisfied. I like their wine list and the fact that Tues (or is it Thurs) they have 1/2 price bottle night.

Carriage House was the caterer for my wedding this past Oct, 2013. I realize that everyone's taste is different and that what person A thinks is delicious might not be the same as person B. For me, my wife, and my guests (at least the 80+ that I've spoken with), we all agreed that Carriage House is fantastic! Prior to our wedding, the wife and I wanted to have a date-night out at the Carriage House restaurant to sample some of the other foods that we'll be having for the wedding, plus try out other items on the menu. I informed the catering manager that we'd be there on a particular date. For our wedding, we had specifically requested to bring Filippino Lumpia ('egg rolls') as part of the menu from a third party vendor. The head chef had requested that he try and make some and if we like them, then he'll make them. Otherwise, we can go with our third party. When we went up for our dinner, the waitress brought out a special plate of lumpia (it had all the guests staring at us). We tried it...NAILED IT!!! BOOM! Good lord they were delicious. The chef then came out and asked us about our dinner and the lumpia. We congratulated him, thanked him, and chatted for a few minutes. It was a very nice evening. IMHO, small "mom-and-pop" restaurants like this are vanishing due to corporate America. Carriage House is many levels above almost all other restaurants. Their food, their service, their hospitality...top notch! Their catering...AWESOME! For our menu, we were concerned that many items may taste great when a single serving is made, but may lose their quality at the expense of quantity. NOPE. The food was fantastic! The service was wonderful! The special treatment that my wife and I got on the day (the whole day) of our wedding was wonderful. The catering manager offered to help us set up our tables, including the floral centerpieces. In an effort to save some money, my wife and I provided Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes for dessert. Carriage House staff, cut, plated, and then repackaged the leftover! All in all, I've read the reviews that other people have left. No business is flawless and perfect. Things happen. But for our wedding, Carriage House performed above and beyond what we had expected. The price was reasonable, the food was amazing, and the staff was helpful and kind. Many thanks to Carriage House, both restaurant and catering staff. Thank you for making our wedding day everything we had dreamed!

Mediocre food- my husband got the veal Oscar which he said was tough and chewy- Caesar salad was ok but nothing memorable.

Simple midscale American cuisine in a wonderful setting. The crabcakes are first-rate; all lump crabmeat without filler or overpowering spices. The filet mignon melts in your mouth and-unusually in these skimpy times-is a real filet, not a tricky cut of loin or roast tarted up to resemble one. The smooth and buttery redskin mash is the essential side dish. Also worthy of mention is the au gratin french onion soup, which IMHO is the best in western Maryland. The service is prompt and attentive.

I hate to put a one-star because a reader may think I'm just a disgruntled and hard-to-please customer. But this is deserved and I never even got to the point where I was a customer - by choice. My fiance and I met the wedding coordinator at the Carriage House Inn to inquire about catering for our wedding. She was presentable and that's about all the good I have to say. She wasn't able to answer any of our questions about food prep (we wanted something along an up-scale BBQ) but she told us "they could do it" as if that helps. She wrote down our questions and never got back to us. Then we learn that we can only taste three items - three!! How are we supposed to make a decision about catering based on three items? However, we rolled with it and chose a few and they were not good. Not all of it, one of the appetizers I recall was good (coconut shrimp maybe?) but everything else was terrible. DRY. You could look at the beef and see how dry it was. So we're thinking maybe we chose the wrong menu items and should try again. We go back another day (had to be a weeknight ONLY despite living in Rockville and no we couldn't do it the same night) and made a few different selections. Equally bad. DRY. The cornbread crumbled apart with our forks and the meat was no different. But there was one thing that changed - we had to pay $5 each PER FOOD ITEM to taste it because we went beyond their three item cap at the previous visit. We paid $15 EACH to try dry meat, dry cornbread, and some other side I don't even remember. Here's the best part - at $15 a plate, we didn't even get our own plates! We had to share these three dinky items for $30!! I can't believe we paid but we did. Did I mention the coordinator double booked herself and was floating between our table and another table interested in catering? Forget it. We moved on. The best part is literally about 6 months later (maybe 2 months before the wedding) a different caterer from the Carriage House called me because they "found my name and number" and wanted to follow up on my interest in their catering - yep that's great follow-up. I can't get over the bad business decision of charging $5 per item for individuals interested in spending thousands of dollars on them for catering - makes them look unprofessional and incredibly stingy. Where else would they cut corners or nickel and dime you? We went to other caterers after that and no one else gave the same tiny portions (that we had to share) and with a charge. If they can't manage making good food for one plate (you know, because we didn't get our own) and handling a simple tasting for two, how on earth can they manage catering a wedding of 150+ people and make good food? Boo. Boo, boo, boo.

Good food... try the crab dip for an app. The house dressing was very good and enjoyed the Shrimp Imperial. The black raspberry pie was excellent!

Forgettable food in a very interesting building.
