I've been to all the restaurants in this shopping center... but this one is new! I ordered the bento lunch and while it was being prepared, I spoke to the owner. They've only been open about 9-10 months. I LOVE the decor--clean lines, clean furniture, and no cluttered decorations. The food was excellent! The miso soup was perfect, the salad (and dressing) was fresh and the sushi was great. I'll definitely be back!

Never have I felt compelled to write a review on Yelp until I went to Yama Sushi. I work as a server at Niwano Hana in Rockville, so I know when i see good sushi. I was on my way home from school and I decided to drop by because I was having a sushi craving. This place seemed decently priced and pretty good judging by the reviews here on yelp, so I went with moderate expectations. Loved the decor, VERY attentive staff. I went with the 3-roll lunch special, and got an eel roll, spicy tuna roll, and a philly roll. Food: 4.5/5 The fish tasted fresh and was made well. However, they could use a little more improvement in making it a tiny bit tastier for the spicy tuna roll. The eel roll was my favorite. :) Best of all, they didn't skimp out on the fish! They were very nicely sized, with just the right amount of rice. Nicely presented too. Service: 5.5/5 I came in, and the lady taking my order was super nice. She even called me by my name when my food was ready! Now THAT'S attention to detail. She must have noticed it on my credit card when I had paid. Everything was nicely packed, and she had even given me two containers of soy sauce without me having to ask for an extra one. I'll definitely be coming back for dinner to try out some of their specialty rolls. Give this place some love, guys! :)

I love this place. Whenever my best friend is in town, we go here because it's so close . I wouldn't say it's my favorite sushi place in the area, but the service is good (quick and friendly) and the sushi is still really good. Like I said, not my all-time favorite, but it's still quality. The atmosphere itself is a little quirky (especially the background music) but I wouldn't let that stop you.

Holy tempura salmon Batman! i have to say the sushi here is great! i walked in basically as i did'nt feel like driving far but wanted sushi so i figured i'll give this place a shot, my friends you now have a regular customer! i thought ok i'll go with the old standard dynamite roll as they are the same everywhere, then i added the the daily special the tango roll and the dancing dragon. good lord! i almost licked the plate! i think the sushi chef is sprinkling his sauces with crack cause i need a fix! i had to stop myself from ordering another roll as i am not a millionaire. the price is right along the lines of any sushi place so we all know one sushi meal can break a brutha. i will say next i go i will be getting the sushi baot as it cost about the same as my bill last time. of course the boat feeds 2-3 and i am just a greedy, greedy man!

Hands down all time favorite sushi place. So much fish is put in the rolls my mouth waters thinking about the salmon. Yummy I used to go at least three times a week. The staff is so great. Never disappointed. So much Better than sushi king and sushi sono spend your money here you won't regret it.

Cute restaurant, great lunch special-8.99 for 2 rolls and soup or salad. On 3 visits, each time the food was consistently good and service was attentive. I liked the basic rolls-California, sweet potato, vegetable rolls as much as I liked the specialty rolls. Ask for sides of spicy sauces-spicy mayo is my favorite!

I've gotten take-out here a couple times and they are always very polite and speedy. The miso soup is great, the little salad that comes with some "entrees" is nothing special (but definitely edible), and they have a good selection of seemingly fresh sushi. One pet peeve is that in some entrees they put a couple lemon slices in the take-out container as garnish. Sure, it's pretty and gives the meal a lemon-fresh scent, but citric acid + raw fish = ceviche, and that's not what I ordered. So the nigiri next to the lemon slices always leaves a bad taste in my mouth, literally. Once I find a polite way to say "please don't include lemon slices" I'll be able to judge whether the fish is actually of the best quality. From an authenticity standpoint, they at least have some of my favorites like inari on the menu. Most sushi restaurants around here will give you a weird look when you ask for rice wrapped in tofu skin. I'll probably continue ordering from there until I find a place that's so fantastic it's worth the extra miles. And yes, I've been to Sushi King, it's not that fantastic.

There is nothing I don't love about this place. Their shrimp tempura rolls are my favorite, and are made with 2 shrimp instead of the usual 1. The staff is friendly, and they will customize your order exactly how you want it. I moved here a year ago and can't find a good Chinese restaurant, but as for Japanese, I've found a winner!

Every time I eat here, the quality and the portions of the sushi are great. They always are so friendly and they make the plate pretty, too! I'm beginning to like this place better than Sushi Sono because the prices are cheaper, it's closer to my house, and it's never too crowded and noisy. I recently tried the Chicken Udon (soup) instead of their sushi and I really liked that, too! I love the thick noodles and the broth was very light but tasty.

Yama sushi is a overall a reasonable restaurant. I feel as though there are a lack of good Japanese restaurants in Howard County, but this one was pretty ok. I have to admit, at first I was skeptical because of the name (the translation is mountain sushi) but the waitress who served us was very friendly. What I have ordered: Since it was my birthday, my family ordered the sushi boat. Good: their "special" rolls are very unique. We tried to spicy tuna rolls and the crab meat rolls. Both very delicious, with a spicy kick.Miso soup and salad accompanied our meal, which were both delicious (this is a GOOD sign, because miso soup that is too salty is a sign of a bad restaurant) bad: I would stay away from the sashimi. It is very cut VERY thick so unless you like that style, you will receive cubes instead of cut sashimi.

This is restaurant is relatively new compared to others nearby, for example sushi sono. It's decoration and atmosphere is the best in its end. The chef has impressive sushi making techniques and presentation of the food is just amazing! I'd like to go back! Recommend to everyone!

My husband and I come to Yama Sushi about every 2 weeks. For the price, the service and the sushi are fantastic. Our favorite aspect is the rolls - we love the Fuji Maki, Dragon, Rainbow, and many of their other rolls. The sushi itself is pretty good - always fresh and always well presented. Sushi Sono does have higher quality miso soup and larger pieces of fish, but Yama is a little cheaper. Plus, I love the service at Yama. The waitresses are a little shy at first, but once they get to know you, they are very chatty and friendly. We always get a warm welcome when we come now.

Meh. 2-1/2 stars. If you go, stick with the fusion rolls. The sushi boat we got was rather like thicker cuts of grocery store sushi (and a couple of them were too fishy and chewy). Unfortunately there really seems to be no place for pure raw sushi that's worth it in Columbia -- I totally agree w/ the other reviewer's comment about San Francisco sushi!!

Excellent service - extremely personal. Attractive, modern room. Great outdoor seating in summer. Also, 95% of the time, the sushi is very fresh and delicious. I've only given them 4 stars, because, on a couple of occasions recently, the salmon was not as fresh as it could be. But then, I'm from Southern California and I'm very picky about my sushi. Try the spicy salmon and the sweet potato roll - to die for.

Good sized rolls for lunch. I've been to Yama Sushi twice now, both times carry out. Today I got the three roll lunch with an Alaskan, Spicy Salmon and Salmon Skin rolls. I was impressed with the size of the rolls and they were delish.

I will put Yama Sushi up against any Sushi Restaurant in the Columbia/Baltimore area and will bet that they would come out on top. Columbia already has 2 very good Sushi rest (Sono/King), so I really was not expecting much when I first dined here. I was quite surprised when at the conclusion of that first meal, I found myself rating it above the other two Col. restaurants. Subsequently, I've dined here 3 more times and I'm now extending their supremacy to the entire Balt. area. The sushi itself is what makes Yama a standout. Their rolls are fantastic- the basic rolls have a good sized portion of fish, do not have too much rice, the fish is very fresh and just the right amt. of wasabi. Prices for most of the basic rolls are in the $4-5 range. They also offer unique and creative specialty rolls. I have only tried a few of these, but I thought they were fantastic. Looking at their specialty roll menu, it seems the chefs have a special fondness for creating some very spicy rolls - so if hot is what you like, this may be your place. Prices for the spec rolls are $7-$14. So far, I have only tried their rolls, but I would imagine that the same applies for their Nigiri/Sashimi. Overall, here's my breakdown- Food -- 5. Excellent. Service -- 5. Simple, fast and competent. Atmosphere -- 3. New and rather small with simple decor. It's in a shopping center, so your not going to impress your date, but you can grab some essentials on your way home!

They know how to handle rice - not too much rice, not too compacted. It is a key for making good sushi. My wife had lived in Japan for many years. She said Yama Sushi can compete favorably even with those sushi restaurants on Japanese home soil. And price is right too considering how much good quality ingredients they stuff in there. It is our favorite sushi restaurant in the region. We mostly order takeouts.

My cousin and I visited for lunch. I had the sushi and sashimi lunch and sat at the bar. It was a cool, rainy day and the hot green tea was much welcomed. I'm pretty adventurous, so we also ordered some a la carte as well. The fish tasted as it was just out of the sea. Sweet, salty, ocean-y. Very good. And the a la carte items were fantastic. Loved the atmosphere and everything was so fresh.

I was driving home from DC one night and decided to order carry out from here because of the positive Yelp reviews. The decision was good, but there are certainly some areas of opportunity when it comes to service. THE GOOD... -easily placed order -big parking lot -sushi rolls tasted very fresh -restaurant appeared clean -employee who took my order did apologize for the long wait THE BAD... -the estimated time for pick up was way off (I had to sit and wait at the bar for almost 30 more minutes) -nobody offered me water while I waited (just a matter of courtesy) Overall this was an OK first experience. I'd like to return and dine in next time to see how the wait service is. I recommend it for the quality of their food. The service though was nothing I'd rave about just yet...

Came here for my birthday party for a party of 12 or so and they were very accommodating on a Saturday night. Tried all kinds of rolls and dishes and most were pretty good. However, we felt the portions could be larger for the price. The presentation and service was excellent. They also gave us free fried cheesecake for dessert.

I went here with my family last night. Unfortunately many of our go-to sushi places in Columbia are closed on Sundays, so we tried this place out. We are sushi snobs, for sure, and were hoping for some interesting fishes since the menu looked good. Unfortunately, they were out of uni (sea urchin) and amaebi (sweet shrimp), our favorites. The other sushi, sashimi, and rolls we got were very good, though. Many different rolls on the menu (almost an overwhelming amount!), if you are into that sort of thing. Also good yaki-soba. The service was slow but the presentation and quality of the fish were excellent.

We decided to try this place because it seemed to have good reviews. We were not too impressed with our visit to Yama. Most sushi restaurants have a sheet where you can pencil in your sushi order because there could be a lot to order. They told us they don't do that, which is fine, but when we made our order and asked them to read it back, we would have to correct them a few times. Sure enough, when the sushi came out, it wasn't exactly what we ordered. We were too hungry to complain about it. We ordered some sashimi, spicy tuna roll, mackerel, spicy salmon roll with crunch, alaska roll, and red horse roll (chef special menu). The sushi was good, just not great. Definitely not terrible but there are several better sushi spots around the area. Although, the prices are a bit more reasonable than other spots. We probably won't visit this place again.

Good, fresh sushi. A little on the expensive side for special rolls. My boyfriend and I took his sister here for dinner two weeks ago and the service was just okay. It felt like they were trying to push us out the door when we weren't even the last people in the place. I had takeout from here once before ever eating in. I havent been to this place in a longgggg time because I wasn't impressed the first time I went but because it has gotten such great yelp reviews since my last visit, and it's close to me, I wanted to give it another try and I'm super glad I did! I placed a take-out order and was really impressed with how the lady repeated my order back to me without me asking as my order was a little complicated. I felt really confident that I'd be getting exactly what I ordered when I showed up to pick up my food. I asked if they offered brown rice for their rolls and the lady quickly confirmed that for an extra $1 per roll, brown rice was available! My order was totally correct when I arrived and the sushi was excellent! I ordered a boston roll with brown rice and a spicy yellowtail roll with crunch. I would have to say that their brown rice isnt that amazing because my boston roll was very loosly wrapped and would partially fall apart when I dipped it in soy sauce. It was still good though. My spicy yellowtail roll was fantastic! It was super fresh, crunchy, and didnt fall apart at all; I highly recommend this roll! Also, if you like soy sauce, make sure to ask for extra when placing a take-out order as their cups are only half full (which is totally not enough for a soy sauce freak like me). All in all, I'm really glad I tried this place again and will definitely be back :)

Sushi is one of those tricky things where you think it's going to be inexpensive because each roll is $4-5 but then when you get 6-7 rolls and beer your bill comes out and you are like WHAT??? That is what happened here! I like the sushi but the rolls weren't huge and the staff is quite eager to please - we had one server take our order for drinks, another for our appetizers, and yet another for our meals - so apparently they believe in true team work which is great except that it means 3-4 people at your table every few minutes. The location is also a little tricky, it is actually located in Ellicott City but everyone things it's Columbia - it isn't, it's in a shopping plaza so that also makes it a little tricky to find but there was good quality and good service.

So if you've read my Yelp reviews, you'd have seen that my previous review was on Vaccaro's, a dessert place where my friends and I ate an epically decadent meal. Well, the day afterwards, many of those same friends wanted to go somewhere for lunch. However, we didn't want anything too crazy or heavy. And because it was Easter Sunday, we didn't want to be stuck in the massive crowds that gather for Easter brunch. After some thought, we realized sushi would be a great choice. And we ended up at Yama Sushi thanks to Yelp's assistance :) Yama Sushi is located in a suburban strip mall in the Ellicott City/Columbia area. It's pretty nondescript outside but inside, it's all lit up in fancy blue lights and such. It was, however, a little smaller than I expected. The servers were quick to seat us and pass out menus. After looking through it a bit, we ordered a bunch of items for our table of four to share. The food came out fairly quickly... and they were neatly plated, though admittedly, some other sushi places in the area had more beautiful presentations. I can't remember exactly everything we got, but here is a short list of items that stuck out to me: Dynamite Roll - I never had a Dynamite Roll before but my friend really liked them so we ordered some. They are baked maki of salmon and tuna. I liked them though personally, I'd rather go with a raw fish item over this roll. Warning...it's really hot (temperature-wise) so be careful when eating! I guess they don't call it Dynamite Roll for nothing!! Spider Roll - Spider Roll is one of my favorite rolls. It's rolls with deep fried soft shell crabs. At around six dollars, it's a little cheaper than what I'm used to seeing for this roll. However, it also was a little smaller in portion size too. Nonetheless, the roll was very good. There was a good amount of crab and it was perfectly crunchy. I'd probably order it again though I might order more than one roll next time :) Butterfly Roll - This specialty roll is beautifully presented in the shape of a butterfly (hence the name). It contains tuna, white tuna and avocado inside and has slices of salmon on top. I liked it. Rainbow Roll - a classic roll, Yama Sushi's take on the Rainbow Roll is pretty standard. No complaints. Rock N Roll - an eel and avocado roll. There's a lot of avocado on this roll... but I love avocado so no worries for me :) In terms of taste, all the rolls were pretty good. Everything tasted clean and nothing looked old or tired. We did come on Easter--a day when many people go out to eat--so I'd be concerned if their fish weren't up to par. I think in terms of portion size, Yama tends to be a little smaller compared to some of Columbia's most well known sushi places. They also seem to be a little more adventurous in their offerings, having multiple sushi items with mango and such on the menu. Overall, it's a nice sushi place and the price was decent for a sushi restaurant. I wouldn't mind coming back.

I've been to this place a multitude of times while on business trips. It is my favorite place in the whole country. My Asian colleagues seem to agree with me. Love the Bambay roll! The Rainbow roll is outstanding! The Sashimi is ok, but their portions are not too generous. Enjoy it!

We're regulars here because its consistently delicious and the staff is so sweet. The specialty rolls are creative and never disappoint. We usually get the 2 roll lunch special and a couple specialty rolls and we'll be satisfied. Ive never had anything on the menu that I didn't enjoy. The wife and I ate here on a Sunday night 45 min. before closing. There was no one else there when we walked in...too sad so many were missing out. Another couple came in a little while later. This place is in a strip mall...don't let that fool you...go there. Based on this one meal it was perfect. We shared the Crazy Salmon Roll and the Double Spicy Maki roll. The Crazy salmon roll was very good but the Double Spicy Maki Roll was one of the best Maki I have ever had (Maki is the food and seasoned rice rolled with sheets of nori (seaweed) that many mistakenly call sushi. Sushi is raw fish or other food placed on top of formed, seasoned rice). We also enjoyed tuna, yellowtail and scallop sashimi (sashimi is just the raw seafood or fish...no rice). Raw tuna is nearly flavorless but the texture is fantastic, it takes up the flavor of soy sauce and wasabi wonderfully. Yellowtail is a wonderfully flavored raw fish and if you like raw fish sashimi and enjoy real scallops cooked to perfection, you should really try raw scallops...it is "roll your eyes back in your head divine". You MUST enjoy raw fish though...you have to get your head around it and realize properly handled raw OCEAN fish is not only NOT dangerous, but better than cooked fish. (Do not eat freshwater fish raw, you can't see parasites in freshwater fish, but parasites are big and clearly evident in Salt water fish...you can't miss them and they will never make it to your plate in a restaurant.) Our plate was presented wonderfully and we enjoyed it all with a properly heated hot sake and enjoyed many a Kampai! Which is how to say Cheers! In Japan. The only thing that could have been better...and this is NOT a deal breaker, is our server could have had more personality. She looked the look, but was a clear spoken American accent and seemed tired and ready for the place to close. Her service was spot on, not once did we want for anything, but female servers in Japan are taught to be very cordial...a bit more than just efficient. A customary bow would have been cool. Japanese women never look a man in the eye while serving him. I'm not a chauvinist, I'm just telling how it is in customs. The Japanese people are very special people, I love them. So, for a real Japanese experience, a restaurant must have the proper Japanese "attitude". This is the U.S., so granted, most Americans are completely ignorant about Japan and probably don't understand when they are treated customarily by Japanese people, so restaurants are probably careful to appease and cater to "American" ways. The bad/good news is, the "American way" these days is often described by marginal service and marginal food, BUT, this restaurant gave us excellent service and top notch food. Five out of five stars for our experience this one night. I wish we lived nearby.

How much money do you need to fill yourself up at Yama Sushi? Hmmm... Maybe enough money to buy a horse. Anyhow, I ordered the Raven Roll and the Salmon and Tuna Special. I asked the waitress to take off the pepper before she served it to me. The Raven Roll came, and I stupidly ate it, not checking if they took out the pepper or not. Soon enough, my tongue started to burn and I had to gulp down my whole cup of water. I waved over the waitress and she came with a pitcher of water. Then the salmon and tuna rolls came. I have to admit, they were DELICIOUS!! I still left Yama Sushi hungry and with an empty wallet and a burnt tongue.

Went here on this past Sunday evening with family after reading good reviews on Yelp, but walked out very disappointed. First, Yaki Udon was bland at its best. It did not taste like udons I had at other Japanese restaurants. The soup had no taste and the noodle tasted floury from being undercooked. Second, the portions are outrageously small. Granted, this is a sushi restaurant and you're not there to have your stomach full. We ordered Sweetheart Roll because it was on the menu as special for that day. Being big fans of special rolls, my wife and i were very disappointed at how small this roll was, considering it was $16. Also, chirashi we had at another sushi place called Sushi Yoshi in Vienna, VA (one of the best sushi places we've been to) was twice as much as what you get from Sushi Yama. Overall, we spent close to $100 for 3 people but walked out very very disappointed. I don't plan on going here again.

This is our family's favorite sushi place! We always have fantastic service and the place is always clean and cozy. We have tried many different rolls including the special rolls and have never been disappointed! Our kids even request this place for their birthday dinner so they can order the "large boat" (although we just order 7-8 rolls and they arrange them for us on the boat).

Great sushi. Not from the Columbia area but my friend took me to this place and I have to say I was impressed. Normally when I get sushi I feel rushed by the waitresses, but they gave us plenty of time before asking if we were ready. There were many options to choose from although they are rather pricey. The chef special rolls all average between $12-$17. I recommend the Golden roll and the Columbia roll. I really like the decoration as well. Very tasteful.

All declarative simple sentence review: GO! Tempura was doughy. The seaweed salad comes in a martini glass with orange slices. Very pretty. Miso was meh. Place is small. Our service was good. Best part was the toasted sesames on the rice. For the price, not really worth it.

Enjoyed a nice dinner here during the snowstorm last week. Clean, modern interior with a touch of kitsch (beaded curtain, anyone?) Our server was helpful and friendly but not overly meddling, and she didn't complain when we ordered from the menu multiple times throughout the meal (with a group, it's hard to tell how much food you'll need, but some sushi places frown on tapas-style ordering.) By far, the standouts were from the specials menu: Golden Roll (tempura eel, avocado, mango, spicy sauce) and Dancing Dragon (tempura shrimp, masago, crab stick, panko.) They came on a huge plate and there were so many layers to each dish it looked like a work of modern architecture! All the ingredients were fresh and tasty. We also sampled the crazy tuna, crazy salmon, spider and salmon skin rolls, which were all good. I got a seaweed salad, which was delicious but served, inexplicably, in a martini glass. Hot sake was okay, but I'm not a big sake fan anyway so it's hard for me to judge that. Prices were very reasonable:a deluxe roll from the specials menu runs $10-15, but a regular maki roll is more like $5-10, so two people can eat very well for around $20. I plan to return to try some of the non-sushi dishes, too!

This sushi place is small and a little bit hard to find, but I stopped in here for a quick takeout lunch since it's right next door to my doctor's office. For weekday lunch, they offer quite a few lunch specials. They had a decent number of tables filled for the weekday lunch crowd and clearly had returning clientele. I ordered the two roll lunch special, which comes with a choice of either salad or soup and the shrimp tempura lunch special, which comes with 2 pieces of gyoza, few pieces of california roll, salad, soup, and rice. For the price, it's a decent lunch deal. For the two roll lunch special, I tried the spicy salmon roll and the ell with avocado roll. The rolls were filled with filling and were fresh. The service is quite friendly. They pack everything very well for takeout; they even separately packed the cold, raw items from the hot, cooked items, which is true attention to detail. Even noticed that they forgot to pack a second spoon for the second soup and stopped to give me one.

I have never actually eaten in the restaurant, but we've ordered take out from here several times and never been disappointed. I've only ever had sushi dishes, none of that sissy cooked food! If sushi were cheaper, I'd probably be ordering from here once a week at least!

I stopped in here one night this week around 8:30 pm. I was starving and wanted sushi to go. I quickly scanned the extensive menu and ordered the Columbia Roll. It was filled with shrimp tempura, crab, and spiced with hot chili. Maybe I am not up on the latest sushi prices, but this one roll was $15.95. I enjoyed it, but for me....this was a little pricey for a takeout. Make sure you glance at the price before ordering.

Not my favorite place. The restaurant was poorly lit, which isn't particularly appealing to me when so much of sushi is presentation and being able to see your food to ensure it's fresh. We had the shrimp tempura appetizer, which was quite good. Scorching hot and definitely just out of the fryer. It came to our table very shortly after ordering. We ordered the chirashi, a sweet potato roll, an alaska roll, and a spicy salmon roll. All of the rolls were fine, but I was a somewhat disappointed with the chirashi. I'm used to chirashi being in a large bowl over a bed of rice, but this was more like a variety of sashimi on a plate with a small bowl of rice on the side. Not a big deal, I'm not too picky. However, the quality of the fish was very hit or miss. The mackerel, which is a sashimi that I order everywhere I go, was a bit fishier than it ought to have been. Not a mark of freshness. They also included fake crab legs in the chirashi, which is kind of cheap if you ask me. But perhaps it's because I think they're gross. The salmon on my plate was icy. I'm not sure if this was because it was sitting in the coldest part of the case, or if it was still frozen from shipment. Either way, not a pleasant surprise. The tamago was not very appealing either. On the other hand, both the red tuna and white tuna were above average. As an aside, I will mention that it seemed like the servers were really trying to shuttle people in and out of the restaurant as quickly as possible. Our sushi came while we were still working on the appetizer, the check came right after we finished our sushi without the server asking if we were finished or wanted dessert. And it wasn't just us, everyone else that came in within 5 minutes of our arrival were out the door before we were. Not a horrible offense, but it did feel a little rushed. Overall, it's fine. If a friend wanted to go here, I'd tag along, but if they gave me a choice, I'd rather go to Sushi King or Katana.

Heard the sushi is great but tried a Tempura lunch Bento. Miso soup was very good and not too hot. The salad dressing isn't what I expected, a little too gingery for my tastes. The tempura was nice and crispy, vegetables and shrimp tasted fresh. The California rolls also tasted fresh with a surprising crunch that I am indifferent to. The gyoza was good enough and service was prompt and friendly.

Had a chance to go to this place over the weekend (sorry for late review) Ambiance and neatness of place-gets five stars!!! Sushi-also very fresh. Didn't have too much to eat but what I had was superb! Definitely recommend for dates and all around sushi. Gets one minus because of the Miso. Didn't find it too flavorful nor the salad.

I've been here a few times already and I will keep coming back. I've declared this place my "close-to-home" sushi place, and I will visit frequently. Yama Sushi is not necessarily the "Wow! This is the best sushi I've ever had" kind of place, but the "yes, this is good and this will do" kind of place. The prices are right on target and the sushi is pretty fresh. Not too fancy of a place, pretty small, and service is friendly. Last time I visited for lunch, we had the two roll lunch special, which comes with your choice of two sushi rolls (~rolls are cut into 6 pieces) with a salad or miso soup for $10.95. Also, just wanted to point out that Yama Sushi has the best variety of special chef rolls than other sushi places in Columbia that I've visited, some are a bit pricy, but I'm always wanting to try new rolls, so thats a plus for me. (Again) in my terminator voice "I'LL BE BACK!!"

Here in columbia we have plenty of sushi joints that are at a good level. Yama Sushi doesn't disappoint but it doesn't hit it out of the park. It will satisfy your sushi craving but it's a little pricey for the quality you get, and there's plenty of other choices around. Service is good and it's nice to be able to sit outside on a nice day.

My cousin loves this place and wanted me to try it for lunch. It is a nice little place with cool decor. I tried the Bento Box with Chicken Teriyaki and ordered 2 different sushi rolls. The Bento Box was typical of what you could get at any restaurant. While the sushi rolls were good they were nothing spectacular. I have had better. The service was quick and efficient. If you are in the area and need a quick tasty bite to eat then stop by this Yama.

Yama Sushi of Ellicott City is yet another small, strip-mall sushi place in the Columbia area. Their menu has some great lunch options, including a pick two rolls for $8 or three rolls for $11 lunch - either choice lets you pick a miso soup or green salad to go with it. Her plate: 3 roll lunch special - spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and sweet potato; green salad In comparing this lunch to Sushi Sono from a week before, Yama Sushi wins on a few fronts - the rolls are about the same size, and both are quite fresh, but Yama Sushi is about half the price of Sushi Sono. The salads are both about the same - forgettable. Next time I go to Yama Sushi, I'll try the soup instead.

My husband and I came here after reading the good reviews on yelp. My only concern about the place was that after the 1 other table of people left we were the only people there...if it's that good it should never be empty right? I can't complain about the rolls we got. We got two rolls off of the special menu and two regular rolls (eel avocado and philly). We also started with miso soup and steamed shumai. I can't complain about anything but nothing stood out as extraordinary either. Considering it's farther from our house and doesn't outdo sushi sono in Columbia, we most likely won't be back.

It's as expensive as you make it. You can order a spicy platter which includes 3 rolls salad and soup for $15 (easily feeds 2 people) or you can order a specialty roll I.e triple hot roll for $15 (feeds 1person). Bottom line, it's all delicious! Love this place, we eat here at least once a week. I highly recommend Yuma sushi.. Food is delicious, atmosphere is good, service is lovely

I was pretty impressed, and I eat a lot of sushi. It's at least as good as sushi sono, and cheaper. It's better than Sushi King and Hanamura. The salmon was exquisite and the tropical thunder roll was amazing. The tuna was forgettable but not bad. The selection of vegetarian items was a little lacking, which was unfortunate as my wife can only eat a little bit of fish in a setting. The atmosphere is a little utilitarian for a sushi restaurant, but certainly nice enough. Don't get me wrong, it's perfectly fine, it's just not as elegant as other places I've eaten.

I was not overly impressed with Yama's quality of food. I ordered the Maryland roll, Alaska roll and a smoked salmon roll (more on that one in a bit). The rice was still warm when served and it was too mushy for standard sushi. The Maryland roll was just alright, not the best crab meat in MD. The Alaska roll was pretty average and the flavor really did not come out of the roll...probably because of the rice. The smoked salmon roll was by far the best but since smoked salmon wasn't on the menu I was charged for a Boston roll even though I told them to withhold the cream cheese. Yama is small and quaint, exactly what you would expect from a sushi restaurant. They only have 4 beers (Kurin, Budweiser, Bud Light and I forget the fourth). The service was good but they checked in far too much and I felt rushed even though it was only half-full. There are better places in Columbia to go....try Sushi King for example.

I've been here twice so far, once for takeout, and once for lunch. I ordered a tuna roll and a salmon roll the first time, and both were quite good. It's cheaper than Sushi King and Sushi Sono, and this place is less than 10 minutes away from my office. The second time I came here, I ordered a chicken teriyaki lunch special, which came with two california rolls, salad, gyzoza, and salad. Quite good, if just a little bit on the pricier side. I was alone, but there were a couple groups of working professionals eating. Since it's so close to my office, I'm definitely coming back to try more things.

I'd give Yama Sushi 3.5 stars if I could, but I'm feeling generous tonight and there were certain things about the place that I really, really liked. First, the bad - it's not very busy there. It's tucked away in a little twee strip-mall on the outskirts of Columbia, MD and if you don't know it's there, you'd never find it from the road. As such, some of the fish we had was a little tired - not off, mind you, but not at its prime. Now, some good - there's some really good flavors here. We had an appetizer special that was rather original and nice - tuna and salmon cubes tossed with seaweed salad, cucumber sticks, and spicy sauce, wrapped tower-like in avocado slices, with multicolor tobiko, sweet eel sauce, and chili sauce as garnishes. Very impressive looking, very tasty. A roll of krab leg and avocado in a cucumber wrapper with spicy mayo and ponzu on the side was also nicely presented. Nice, light, and crisp. A good start to a meal. Mediocrities - no wasabi on the underside of the fish made into nigiri. No wasabi or gari served with the nigiri. Lukewarm tea. No order sheets for the bar - you have to dictate your sushi order one selection at a time to your server. The yellowtail - a little dried out. More good - every plate of food we saw served was presented very attractively. Even teriyaki being served further down the bar was plated very nicely. Unagi was really good, with just the right amount of sweet sauce. A small plate of fresh fruit is provided at the end of the meal - mango, strawberry, and orange segments tonight. A salmon-skin hand roll to wrap up the sushi meal was out of this world - crisp, slightly smoky chunks of salmon skin and meat, lightly dressed with sweet sauce, cucumber, and sesame. In my mental local sushi list, this currently ranks just after Sushi Sono and Sushi King. But, I really wish I could convince Toni to move out of his place on Bush Street in San Francisco and make his home on the east coast.

We get sushi almost weekly and 9 out of 10 times we are at Yama Sushi. We really like the variety of rolls they offer. It is a smaller place and can fill up fast. The staff is wonderful and remember you. The atmosphere is very trendy and quaint, the biggest downfall is that they only have one female and one male restroom. Our favorite is the Tango roll - I recommend it to anyone!!

Let me get this right out on the table: I have a sushi problem. I could eat sushi morning, noon and night. I've learned how to make it because otherwise, I would have had to get a second job to afford all the sushi I was ordering from local places. Yama Sushi is causing me to relapse. Deliciously fresh, reasonably priced and elegantly presented, this is my new go-to place when I don't feel like rolling my own. We usually get a take-out Yama Boat for the variety, and they always lay it out with little lemon swans and delicately piled radishes...when they could just as easily simply put it on a tray and call it a day. The interior is lovely; small, contemporary yet not at all pretentious. Just sharp and chic. A surprisingly hip gem in our otherwise Stepford-esque suburban Columbia.

Mediocre food. Mediocre service. Mediocre atmosphere. I came here with a couple of my girlfriends and my boyfriend. The first thing the hostess said to me while I was looking for our table was, "Are you looking for someone? The Asian group?" I'm Asian but wow was I offended. If anyone overheard, I'd feel that they'd be offended as well! The service was not that great. The waitress was very inconsistent. We ordered Seafood Udon, Eel Roll, and Shrimp Tempura Roll. The sushi was alright and the Udon was mediocre at best. The soup base tasted rather bland, the seafood was rather bland as well. I love Udon and this place was just terrible. Don't think I'd be visiting this place again.

This is a cute little sushi restaurant tucked away just off 108 and 29 in Ellicott City. The atmosphere is clean and bright and the wait staff was great. i came here with my husband because we wanted to explore new restaurants i in the area. My husband is a relative newbie to Asian food so we like to start him off with "safe" dishes to find something he will like. I had a sushi platter and he had the chicken katsu don. I've had chicken katsu a million times since i was a child so I felt this was a fairly safe dish for him. However, we were both taken aback when it arrived and the dish seemed alive. Our waitress was very helpful and took the time to explain that the moving pieces were fish skin and it was ok to eat. I think both of us were a little apprehensive, but my husband just moved the waving fish to one side and ate the rest. He said it was good but the appearance was a little much for him. My sushi rolls were nicely rolled and very fresh. Overall, I would recommend Yama sushi. Great place and great staff!

Am I right that Columbia has its own style of sushi? Well, it certainly has a new sushi place that steps up the scene. Somehow I discovered the "big roll" style here at Sushi King and Sushi Sono. I went from sushi pieces and tuna rolls in Virginia to the magical combinations like Sono's #14 that wraps together tuna, seared salmon and a sauce with a bite. Now, add Sushi Yama near the top of the list. The new restaurant in the Dorsey Search village center off Rte 108 delivers fish that almost rivals Sushi Sono, This is a unique variation on the "big roll" style with a price that is probably a step smaller. With a friend, we blew out on our first visit with four "big rolls" that I'd absolutely order again. Like the King and Sono rolls, the best ones relied on high-quality ingredients jazzed up by combinations and sauces. "Tokyo" includes spicy yellowtail, avocado, tuna, salmon and honey wasabi sauce. "Orange House" includes asparagus, sprouts, cucumber, and two styles of salmon. The sprouts are the kind of touch that make me want to work through Sushi Yama's menu. Like at King and Sono, the Yama kitchen puts together flavors that work, not just stuff they slapped on rice. Those sprouts give a peppery flavor that paired with crisp asparagus and the fish. In the "Columbia" roll, a sweet mango sauce brought together a mix of shrimp tempura, crab, pine nuts and avocado. Our quality test recently has been salmon skin roll. Bad ones come dry or just crunchy. Yama's salmon skin had the crisp, but also a slight chew and strong salmon flavor that contrasts nicely with the more-complex big rolls. After one visit, Sushi Yama hasn't pushed aside Sono as my favorite spot. But I certainly saw that the prices were a touch lower, and I think there are two dozen rolls that I want to try. Lots of interesting sauces that go hot and sweet -- a kimchi sauce, mango sauce, eel sauce used in rolls without eel. Several interesting wrappers like pink soy paper. That's all on top of a standard Japanese menu with terriyaki, tempura and udon.

This restaurant has been on my radar for a long time. I kept meaning to come out, but for one reason or another, I never made it out until just before Thanksgiving. I will say that it was worth the wait. The sashimi is think and flavorful. The rolls delicious. The service was excellent. The place was also super-popular. We waited 20-30 minutes to get inside.

I also like the Miso soup, although I think that the servings are a little on the small side. I normally would give this place 4 stars, but it's getting 5. The reason is I recently went here with a bunch (read: 20+) friends for a girlfriends birthday. Of course, we made a reservation in advance. We showed up a little early and they already had the whole booth-section set up and ready to go with plenty of seats. There were 4 waitresses on hand, and 3 of them served us almost exclusively. There were other parties that showed up, and seemed like they were getting quick and attentive service as well. They took our orders as our party trickled in, and brought out our apps and food quickly. The stellar service of that evening is why I'm giving 5 stars. Now, for my previous visits. I have seen a bunch of people compare this place to Sushi Sono and Sushi King, both of which I have been to. I live in Ellicott City, and both are difficult for me to visit as Columbia traffic can be a pain. Since they both are so good, it's often crowded and there is often a wait. Yama certainly has become my favorite due to the fact that it's never crowded but continues to provide top notch (at least for this area) sushi at reasonable prices. I have never been disappointed, and between me and my "sushi gang", a group of about 6 that frequent this place, we've had almost every special roll on the menu. It's all tasty. My personal favorites are the Black Dragon Roll, Sweet Mom and Yama roll. The service has always been great and most of the people know us by now, which could be the reason we always receive great service and food. But I've always been of the mindset if a place is good enough for me to return, and their staff remember you and know you by name after a couple visits, it's automatically at the top of my favorites list. I'd always pick this place over both Sushi Sono and Sushi King.

I just ate here tonight with my boyfriend. Physically the place looks pretty and well designed. The down side is that the minute we poured the soy sauce in our sauce bowls, out came a bug. It looked like a nat, but either way THAT'S GROSS! I told the server about this and asked her for new chopsticks because I touched it when I was examining to see what it was....she looked at me in disgust and grabbed it with her own chopsticks and went to the kitchen. When she came out I asked her for another pair of chopsticks and she gave them to me but she then went to the register and started conversations about what happened to another server in their own language as she kept glancing at me with a nasty face expression. Are you kidding? How obvious can you be when you're talking about your customers in front of their face?! Well, long story short... there went her tip.

So we went to Yama because of the reviews on Yelp. The experience was a mix. First off, we found it odd that they served hot tea with tea bags. For $2.50, I would expect fresh tea so that was not a good start. It also took the waitress a long time to return our table to take order. During the entire course of the meal, we did not really get tea refill or water refill. So I would say service is not so good. The price of the sushi is reasonable. They don't blow you away but decent. We ordered the sashimi regular, california roll, ell roll, spider roll and spicy tuna. One item you should avoid- Nagamaki beef. The beef has zero taste to it. They rely on the sweet sauce to mask the fact that the beef is like a piece of blah. The high note of the meal was the fried ice cream. Our girls like it and want to return just for that. So, I would say if you crave for sushi and don't want to break the bank and don't mind slow services. Yama is ok.

Went last night (on a Friday night) and had a horrible experience. In sum, we were there for over 2 hours and wound up taking our sushi to go. Service was bad and food was okay. We waited ten minutes before the hostess even acknowledged us. After finally being seated, we ordered edamame to start, noodles and teriaki chicken for the kids, and a number of rolls for me and my husband. After a very long wait, the chicken and noodles finally arrive, but not the rolls. The waitress says that the rolls will come soon, but the sushi bar is "very busy." We start noticing that people who arrived a good hour after we did are eating rolls and even leaving. Kids have been done with their food for quite awhile at this point. A woman who appears to be a manager is walking around, filling water glasses and asks us how we are doing. We tell her we have been waiting a very long time for our food, she says she will check but I watch her and she appears to do nothing about it. Finally, two of our rolls come out. We tell our waitress we want to take the rest to go, given the wait. She smiles and says sorry but is overall pretty dismissive. We still wait another 10-15 minutes for them to pack it all up. I'm sure they must have forgotten our order, but they should have acknowledged it and attempted to make it better, not act like its no big deal. Food was okay. We ordered apple juice for the kids, who had several refills over the course of our very long wait for food, and wound up paying $15 just for the apple juice! The rolls were kinda mushy, the teriaki chicken and noodles not better than okay. I really wanted this place to be good since we live nearby but will never, ever patronize this place again. If you want good sushi and service and to stay in the area, go to Sushi Sono or Sushi King. Don't go to Yama Sushi.

This place is just ok. Dumplings were light and tender, not soggy, not tough, just right and flavorful. The rolls were good but small and pricey. Service was very nice. The problem is I can get better sushi within 10 minutes of Yama for less money. So not bad, but not great. I don't see us returning.

This was some of the worst sushi I have had in Columbia. I got the crispy spicy platter which comes with miso soup, a salad, and 3 rolls (one yellow tail, one salmon, one tuna), and I was underwhelmed by the rolls. My roommate left half of her platter on the plate. The seaweed was chewy, the salmon was too fishy tasting, and instead of nice crispy pieces of fried deliciousness, there were a few chewy flakes sprinkled on the outside of the roll. Miso soup was ok, and the service was very attentive, though at noon we were the only two customers in the restaurant. The platter was reasonably priced, I don't think there's a way to get as much sushi for that price at Sushi King or Sushi Sono. I also really liked the décor.

The miso soup was nothing but broth - hardly any tofu or seaweed. The spicy tuna w/ crunch roll had no crunch and no spice. The quality of the salmon and tuna in the rolls left much to be desired. The tempura looked like the saddest tempura I had ever seen, but was good. The teriyaki chicken, my companion shared, was average. All in all, not worth going back.

This place has great rolls and good service. The YaYa roll is my favorite, I get it every time. The price is average for sushi in Columbia.

Down the street from my house, consistently good, comfortable atmosphere, friendly staff, variety of sushi. (and the candy at the end of the meal is a delight)

The sushi here was pretty darn good. I think I might have my new sushi spot in Columbia! The atmosphere is much less hectic than that of Sushi Sono and Sushi King and I kinda like that. Service is super friendly too! They have a lot of unique rolls and the food display is awesome. It's like you're eating art!

My family came here the other evening for our cousin's 50th birthday and we had such a good time. I even got my husband to try octopus! Our kids only eat the California roll but they eat everyone of them. The food was great, as always. Everything was fresh and delicious.
