Bottom Line: The Old Stein Inn is a German experience that doesn't disappoint - great food, amazing desserts, plenty of beer on tap and German charm. On Saturday night I put on my best dirndl and headed into the depths of the Edgewater for a night of fun at The Old Stein Inn. I was expecting it to be an entertaining night with a delicious meal but I got so much more at this German gem. I've never been to Germany so I can't authentically speak to the authenticity of this place, but it felt very German inclusive of German accents from the staff, a lovely accordion player and lots of wurst. When in German, do as the Germans do . . . so I started with bier and lots of it. A flight of light German beers, a flight of dark German beers and some Lindemans Framboise Raspberry Lambic for good measure. For food I had some of the soft pretzel complete with three sauces, potato pancakes complimented by applesauce and a smokey, porky, bauernwurst sandwich. All of that was five-stars delicious The sandwich was actually served on a pretzel roll with sauerkraut (yum) and a side of fries which were awful. If I had been paying attention I would have requested some German Potato Salad or Spatzle instead because both of those potato dishes looked amazing. Even if you don't think you like German food or you are a vegetarian, don't dismiss The Old Stein Inn. I would have been happy with the beer, potatoes pancakes, pretzels and aaaa-mazing homemade desserts. Its a rare day I eat dessert after a dinner out but I could not resist it here. I had the Belgian waffle sundae - a fresh and perfectly crisp waffle, topped with ice cream, a nut brittle, chocolate sauce, butterscotch, and a cherry. So incredibly good and worth the calories. Overall, service here was good. We made a reservation ahead of time and the restaurant was able to accommodate our party of six either inside the restaurant or out in the bier garten. Sylvia, who plays the accordion is especially delightful. I can't wait to come back for some more German goodness and to try the fried pickles.

I put off writing this review because I'm not a fan of German food (I know, I know, so what was I doing here?). I decided to treat my fiance to a meal here because he has been craving German food. Since I am not all that adventurous, I decided to just eat something small. I ordered the Beer & Bacon Crab Dip. I must say, it was very hearty and I appreciated how many pretzel bites accompanied the dip. Inside, the restaurant was very nice and clean. Next time, I'd love to sit in the bar area. Two things that turned me off: Our waiter was quite blunt and not very patient with us. While he seemed like an okay server, I just didn't think his attitude meshed with his customer service role. He also didn't offer any suggestions or give us the opportunity (mainly me) to ask any questions about the food on the menu. If I went back, I'd have to rely on my fiance's knowledge of German food. Needless to say, I'll only return the next time my fiance has a hankering for some German cuisine.

For German food lovers it does not get better. Reminds me of Blob's Park of old. The pretzels, sausage, mustard, etc. I've never had a bad dish or poor service and that is very rare these days. Take the family and enjoy some Old Country hospitality. You'll be glad you did.

Followed the reviews and was not disappointed at all. The experience started from the start with the hostess. Beer was great. Had the Uber burger which was made to order. The price was a tad high but it was worth it when we got the food!

German food, done right! It's hard to find a good German restaurant down here. Well, it's hard to find ANY German places to be honest! The ones you do find are usually pretty good, at least to me, but I'm partial to the cuisine. However, great German grub is still an art form, and this place has it down to a tee. Let me also state that we went here MANY years ago (way before the fire) when this place was little more than a dirty biker bar. My dad remembers a very unpleasant experience the last time he had been, where we were all still hungry after we left (we cleaned our plates) and paid an unusually high cost for said disappointing meal. Now, I hate to say good things about bad events, but maybe the fire was a silver lining in disguise. The indoor dining area is very open now, with very high vaulted ceilings and warm inviting wooden benches and tables. They make up for the lost space with a comfortably big biergarten (Beer Garden, literally) out back. We were there in the mid-chill of Fall, and they had plenty of heaters set up outside. The guests seemed very comfortable out there, too! If I had to complain, and I'm not, it would be the noise level. It can still get a little loud inside, but not to a painful degree, and certainly not worth subtracting a star for. Still, thought I'd mention it (i.e. warn you if you're sensitive to sound). The food, though... oh man the food! I find it hard not to order the jaegerschnitzel every single time. The perfectly cooked cutlet is draped lovingly in a smoky, earthy, hearty, savory bacon-mushroom gravy, just the right amount. As with all of their schnitzels, you can choose between chicken, pork or veal, a nice feature on the schnitzel menu. They have a wurst menu, too, and their sausages are fresh, flavorful, and filling! The sides... perfectly done. Authentic, delicious, mouth-watering... They have great beer here, too. Mostly German, naturally, but how can you not like German beer?! Their selection is actually pretty varied, and they have a rotating 10th tap of a seasonal item. Usually really delicious, as well. Try the German Root Beer cocktail! It's one of the only ways I've enjoyed Jaegermeister, seriously. This is a great restaurant, and well worth the trip. I sincerely hope they keep up this level of commitment to the food, the beverages, and the service. This kind of quality will keep us as regular customers for many years to come. True Phoenix story, rising from the ashes bigger and better than before. Please please PLEASE keep it up, everyone!

So we sat outside in the bier garten....Rachel gave us excellent suggestions from the beer to the appetizers to the entrees. We started with a soft pretzel with the three different toppings, it was delicious. The beer and wine were great and the dinner was awesome. Was really in the mood for something different and the German sausages and schnitzel, hit the spot. We chose the smoked and the regular pork sausages and the chicken cordon blue schnitzel. Both we good but the sausages, I would order again! The cordon blue was a bit bland. The sausages were served with Sauer kraut and German potato salad. Unfortunately the kitchen closed so we couldn't try the desserts. Next time! If you want something different in the Annapolis Edgewater area, go here!

I didn't go into it with very high expectations, since I figured German food was just sausages and sauerkraut, but I was pleasantly surprised. We sat in the bar area with a very attentive but not overbearing waitress (I'm not a big fan of too much small talk). We got the Valentine's Day special, which was two appetizers, two entrees and a shared dessert for $55. The onion soup was SO cheesy-- every spoonful absolutely oozed with it-- and wasn't overly salty like it tends to be at many restaurants. The salad had a great creamy dill dressing. For entrees, we got the lobster spatzle, which had generous amounts of lobster, along with some spinach and bacon, and short rib sauerbraten with potato dumplings and a ton of red cabbage. The short ribs were lovely and falling apart, and while I think the slightly tangy gravy is a bit of an acquired taste, it did pair well. For dessert, we got the apple pie cheesecake; it's basically an apple pie with a light, creamy layer of cheesecake between the crust and the apples. It's unusual-- definitely try it! We also got a wurst plate to share, and while I wouldn't get it on my own, it was nice to be able to try a couple different sausages. They have ten beers on tap so it's a good chance to try some unusual German beers-- you can get a whole liter!

Wonderful food. The Old Stein Inn offers the most authentic food in the metro DC area. It's worth the drive to enjoy the great for, selection of German beer, and the great wait staff. Jorn was an awesome waiter and we enjoyed conversing with him in German. Meals tried - Sauerbraten, amazing, tender, and delicious - served with Spatzle and Red Cabbage. Pork Schnitzel - flaky light crust covering a thin moist pork tenderloin. Chicken Schnitzel - also delicious. For desert the Belgian Waffle with Ice Cream and Butterscotch. Wow, you would think heavy but the desert was light and the scoop of ice cream is a curved ribbon allowing for easy slicing with the waffle below. Go enjoy, you'll love every minute and every bite.

This is my favorite German restaurant. I enjoy the Specials. The use of local ingredients with a little German flare, always impresses...as well the beer is awesome!! A must have is the crab and cheese soup.

This place is always fun and a great place to really take in some culture. The beer is superb and the schnitzel is great. There is a need for reservations on the popular times and dates. But it's well worth the wait!

Dined here with a large group on Sunday evening. Sadly, the experience led most of us ask ourselves why we gave them another try. The food seems to be hit or miss and the chef's interpretation of some German dishes are just too far off the mark. The Blaukraut (red cabbage), for example, was spicy. Some in our group complained that it tasted like hot sauce was added; in general, German food isn't spicy! Second oddity, they were out of breaded chicken schnitzel but had chicken to make grilled chicken. Third, German potato salad is not supposed to taste like it is smothered in vinegar. But the one star comes from horrible service we received. A group of 19 people brought considerable amount of money to the restaurant during a time they would have otherwise not had the seats occupied. In other words, they were not booked at that time of the evening. So when I complained to the manager that our table was not receiving any attention, the response that "they were really busy today" doesn't sit well with me. That translates to "...your waiter is tired and doesn't care whether they get a tip because you're the last table of the day" to me. No apologies from the manager and the attitude from the waiter worsened, it was obvious she just wanted to get us to pay and get out.

Been going here for about 5 years now every October for their Oktoberfest! The accordion lady probably has to be my favorite part! She was always dancing around, lightening up the whole place. The umpa (sp?) was also nice and I loved traditional songs. The steak was cooked perfectly, along with the Gemüse Spätzel with chicken (vegetable and noodles). I had the best pretzels I've ever had in my life here. Definitely order the pretzels with mustard!! Although it is on the pricey side (a family of five had appetizers, dinner, drinks, and desert for $260) it has always be worth it. The outside heaters really help with controlling the weather and I never found myself chilly. My whole family had a fantastic time and can't wait to go again next year.

Great food, great atmosphere and great service! Have been a regular customer for a few months and it gets better each time. Honestly, I didn't think I cared for German food but The Stein has proven me wrong as I've explored more of the menu. They have a garden on site where they harvest many of the fresh ingredients used in their dishes. I highly suggest you check this place out if you haven't already!

On a visit back to the Annapolis area we decided to try Old Stein Inn. It had been years since we had been there but remembered it was good so in we went. I'm so happy we did. The food was very good, the beer was very good and the service was great. German food is difficult to find in the area and this is a good place for it. I would go again.

Over the years I have eaten here perhaps a dozen times, more out of a desire for variety than being impressed by the food or service itself. I lived in Germany for several years some time ago and I think I know authentic German food, at least in southern Germany. The food here is hit and miss and not especially good, nor especially bad. It is not top rate though. It is very heavy which is German in character. Out in the bier-garden, on a Saturday evening or a Sunday, you can be serenaded by a very hoaky oompah band or yodeling woman with an accordion. I can do without that. It is just too corny to be believed. The beer is very good though, with a wide selection of honest German brands available. This is a strong point of the place. The last time I was there (recently) I not only got my order but someone else's as well by a waitress who was totally out of it. Usually the service is better than that, but servers tend to be pretty hot!

Wonderful! We were in the area and had heard of the restaurant so decided to pay a visit. We arrived just after opening on a Thursday. We weren't the only ones there for long, though. This appears to be a very popular restaurant. No wonder given the very German ambiance, great food, and friendly service. Next time we won't just be in the area, we'll be deliberately heading here.

Great patio but the service wasn't as solid. First when we arrive - shortly after the venue opened - we asked to sit outside. The hostess seated us only to come back and say we had to leave in an hour because of a reservation. We we're just getting a few beers so it wasn't a huge issue of wrench in our plans but we did feel on edge the whole time because we knew our time was limited. The live German music was fun and would have been nice to enjoy longer but we followed instruction, slammed our drinks and cleared out. The beer paddles were delicious and authentic German beer. As we left we noted there were still open patio tables - including a few that were never occupied while we were there. Weird.

This is German food just like they have in Germany. You get as many beer choices as anyone could possibly want. Believe it or not, we love the potato pancakes with apple sauce. Also the sauerkraut is really good as is the authentic German potato salad. We often get the sausage sampler, which seems to have as much sausage as the regular entry. And when they have Apple Strudel, make sure that you order it. We've been 6-7 times in the past two months, can't get enough. Plus, really great beer garden with German music on Sat and Sun!

Went for the first time today, was worth the hour plus drive. Will be back in warmer months for the garden, definitely! Our waitress was fast and very pleasant. Clean, simple atmosphere but if you go early in the day during winter bring an extra sweater. We arrived at noon and it hadn't heated up yet for the day. I will admit it made me nervous, but oNce the food started arriving I didn't give it another thought. We love German but it is very hard to find it well done in Baltimore. Basically if you can't get spaetzle right you can't get anything right. This was the best spaetzle. Our appetizers were hot and delicious. For four, we had one serving of potato pancakes and two soft pretzels. The pretzels were standouts. The weiswurst was excellent. I wanted veal jäger schnitzel but literally chickened out looking at the price. The chicken was done perfectly so next time I will go for the veal. Potato salads and red cabbage were tasty. Looking forward to our next visit

I've eaten at The Old Stein Inn about a half dozen times and have never been disappointed. The food is always delicious (had the sauerbraten this time), they have a great assortment of German beers, and the service was spot on. If you like German food and haven't been here yet, you have to give it a try.

WOW! Great restaurant great food great service! I recommend this place! Authentic German food great taste great flavoring awsome place. The choices of beer is very good. I cant say enough about this place. I did get lucky with getting seated without a reservation. Make a reservation and sit in the beer garden.

Went here while visiting family and very glad we did. Had a great meal and good German beer. I had a salad with smoked trout and the cheese and crab soup, both of which were outstanding. Also tried the jagerschnitzel that someone else ordered, which was also really good. I was in Germany not too long ago and the German food I had there was actually not as good as the food at Old Stein Inn. Atmosphere is also really nice- especially when it's warm enough to sit outside. Only complaint would be that the kid's menu prices are a bit steep. $8 is a lot to shell out to feed a toddler. We still plan to return next time we're in Maryland.

This place is kind of out of the way, but it seems to be the hot spot for the community. Lots of great German food options and a great selection of giant beers. Not to mention a little lady playing the accordion. I especially like how there is a little of a Maryland flavor to the German menu. I got the Muenster and Crab soup, and it was really good!

I love this place! I've been all over Asia, but never to Europe, so for now this how i get my taste of Europe (pun NOT intended). My Dad and I come here a couple times a month to sip some delicious beers and eat some good food. My Dad has been to Germany numerous times, and he says the atmosphere is very similar to what it would be if we were there - even with the accordion player. They would suit themselves well to wear Lederhosen, and maybe they do during certain festivals, but not any of the times I've been there. The only issue I've ever had was with one of the servers - they weren't a very nice person, and acted a bit like we were a hinderance on their day. All we did was order some beers, a pretzel, schnitzel, and dessert. Didn't hesitate or overthink anything, and we both thought we treated the server with respect - but for some reason they seemed to have a problem with us. Maybe we did do something wrong. But we've never had a problem with any other server on any other occasion at Old Stein. I will be back, I'm sure. Also, if you go here and you're legal drinking age ... you HAVE to try their beers. They're all so good!

I really liked this place. We had a great, authentic German meal and there was a really nice lady playing the accordian and singing German songs. The outside patio looked very inviting but we opted to sit inside because of the hot weather.

Should I write this review auf Deutsch? I probably couldn't. Maybe I could do an English-German hybrid :P This place reminded me so much of a place I went to in Germany...( yelp.com/biz/das-molkenh… ) except when I was in Germany I had to walk like 6 miles to get to it in the mountains. I only had to drive about 30 minutes to get here. And I napped for part of it. I absolutely love every minute of my experience here! We ended up sitting outside on the patio area in the back. Our server was super nice and friendly. I got the amber draft (the Oktoberfest) and it was yummy. We both started off with soup. I got the crab, and he got the goulash, which was good because we both wanted to try both and switched halfway though. I LOVE crab soup... but if I were to order one again I would probably order the goulash. It's filling though so be careful! For entree I ordered a schnitzel (I don't remember what it's called and I don't see it listed on their menu online) It came with fries and the french fries (excuse me, pomme frittes) were SO GOOD! I was absolutely full. It was so much food. But I had a taste of ice cream cake for dessert anyway. I want to come back and have fried pickles!!! This place was fabulous and I want to return before the summer is over and sit outside and enjoy the wonderful food and drink again!

Authentic! This was our 3rd or 4th time here. We've tried most items on the menu and it's been consistently good. Spaetzle appetiser is to die for, so are the fried pickles. My husband is German, I lived there, and friends we ate with have lived there too. Even the coffee tastes like it did in Germany. The bier garten is a wonderful place to be in warm weather, with entertainment. Recommend!

I love this place. There is nothing else like it around the DC area, let alone Edgewater. It's a true German restaurant with traditional food, a beautiful beer garden, great draught selection and all around nice atmosphere. First, on the beer...it is the only place I can find Franz Dunkle on draught which is a fantastic beer. They have a full draught selection and even more in bottles. Every time I'm here, which isn't that often, I talk about spending my next visit in the bier garden for several hours. Sitting outside at the long picnic tables, socializing with friends and meeting new ones. It is a European atmosphere you can't find many places. A beautiful Fall tradition! The food is authentic. On my last visit I tried some of the non-traditional fare which is a cross between local cuisine and German. The crab pretzel was incredible and the Muenster Cheese & Crab Suppe was some of the best bisque I've ever had. Worth a trip alone for a crock of this. When you get into the traditional German food, you won't be disappointed. I mean, it isn't going to blow your socks off (it's sausage, potatoes and kraut) but it is all very good. My favorite dish is the Rinder Rolladen, which you can only get during Oktoberfest. I had it as part of a sampler once, and now if it's on the menu, I always order it by itself. Delicious! The sandwiches are good, the salads are great, and the bar snacks can't be beat (try the potato pancakes! the best you've ever had). While it's a great place to go and spend several hours, if you can only stop in for a quick bite and a beer, that'll work also.

I can't believe I've lived here for 4 years and never heard of this place until friends from Rockville told me about it! I'm a disgrace to all Annapolitans! But if I can redeem myself with this review, I'll definitely give it a try. First of all, the beer list is impressive, and the server was very knowledgable about the different brews, making some great recommendations. I started off with the "Tenth Tap", which I understand changes periodically. This time, it was as nice light Hefeweizen...yummy! I then switched and got the Spaten Optimator Dunkle "DK", which was a darker beer with a nice caramel flavor. Absolutely fabulous! Then on to the food....we started with the fried pickles, which were served as spears rather than chips and came with a honey mustard sauce. I'm normally not a fan of mustard, but this was the perfect complement to the pickles. For my entree, I selected the Jagerschnitzel, which had a Jager sauce with mushrooms and came with red cabbage and a side of Spatzle. I was only able to eat about half of it, but the rest came home with me for lunch the next day. We decided to pass on dessert this time, but I'll definitely be back to try some of the positively sinful sounding offerings. I understand there was a fire a couple of years ago and they've completely rebuilt, and they've done a fantastic job. The decor is amazing, with some beautiful Bavarian light fixtures and lots of dark wood. When you add in the live music, complete with accordion, and the biergarten (can't wait to come back when it's a little warmer!), this place is a gem! Yes, it's a little pricey ($140 for 3 of us), but you won't leave hungry or unhappy.

I love this place! It is a "go to" when we have visitors for sure. I almost always get the same thing - a beer sampler, the soft pretzel and the smoked trout salad. Delicious! I have also tried the sliders which are very, very tasty! Do make reservations though - I saw a very grumpy man told that it would be a 1.5 hour wait with no resi.

There is no other place I'd rather be on a Friday or Saturday night than here. The food, entertainment, beer, and atmosphere, help create the perfect restaurant. Food: For appetizers I recommend the Wurst platter; it gives you a sampler of each wurst they serve. For dinner, schnitzel or wurst is the way to go. You can choose pork, chicken, or veal schnitzel; they all taste good. For wurst, I suggest the bratwurst or bauernwurst if you want something dark, the other two options are white wursts, one being made of veal rather than pork. For dessert, the apple pie is amazing! We look forward to it the whole night. I was disappointed by the brownie. It was nothing special. Tasted like a brownie from a supermarket. Entertainment- I love the accordion lady, she sings nice German songs throughout the night. Many people get into it and sing along sometimes. It's fun for the whole family. Beer: Who doesn't like a tasteful German beer!? The beers here are authentic and smooth. If you like a more sweet taste, get the raspberry beer, it taste splendid. Atmosphere: It's best to come when it's nice out because outdoor seating is the best here. They remodeled a little and now have protective tents with nice lights dangling. It feels like you have been invited to someone's home for a big party, and the host is serving German food. They got heaters too in case it is on the chilly side. Overall: I've been going here for 16 years and I still think it's the best German in Maryland. Take a night off, drink a beer, have some wurst, and have some fun!

Finally! I think I have found a German restaurant I can truly enjoy. It is a combination of new and old world. I've been through old school restaurants that served great food, but the place always smelled musty and old. It's unfortunate that there was a fire, but what a blessing in disguise. The place is new yet still honoring old world German. I didn't realize that the Old Stein Inn would be this packed - you would think they were giving something away! We ended up waiting an hour, but we were able to make our way through the beers at the copper topped, dark wood bar. There was something for everyone in our group from Spaten to Bitburger. Yeah for Oktoberfest! We ended up sitting in the biergarten (highly recommended) where it is open and warmed by space heaters. It is really casual and feels like a true biergarten. Our server was efficient and friendly, bringing us beers, appetizers and more. We started off with the fried dill pickles with mustard. Crunchy pickle and crispy coating won me over. Hooray for the potato pancakes with homemade applesauce. A dozen silver dollar pancakes flecked with dill were paired with a slightly sweet and tart sauce with apple chunks. Very nice touch! The bratwurst was served with potato salad and sauerkraut. The brats were perfect sausages. The sauerkraut was not what we were expecting (traditional tart and sour), but this was a mellow, carmelized and mustardy sauerkraut. The best was the jaegerschnitzel. A breaded and fried veal cutlet topped with mushrooms and gravy. Heaven in my mouth. The schnitzel was served with buttery spaetzle and red cabbage. These are my 2 favorite German sides and I was not disappointed. Warning: Food portions are hefty, so come hungry. The beers kept flowing and eventhough we were stuffed like brats, we ordered the Linzer Torte and Sacher Torte. The Linzer was more like a wedge of an almond cookie with raspberry filling. The Sacher Torte was rich, chocolatey and amazing. They really thought through the details on the interior and the menu. I look forward to returning and trying more of the menu. I may have to make another day trek since it is a bit far out.

I've been trying to get down to this uniquely German restaurant for years now. Tonight, I finally had the chance... and boy was I glad I made the trek. I'll start by saying that the place is a stand alone building with a parking lot, which I always love to see. The building itself is beautiful. The renovation these guys did back in 2010 really make the restaurant feel like something you'd find in Germany. We sat outside because it was a beautiful night. The waitress (Sara) was cheerful, friendly, helpful and extremely attentive. We started with the sausage/cheese appetizer. Succulent pieces of mixed sausages with an assortment of cubed cheeses, all of which was accompanied by a spicy brown mustard dipping sauce (undoubtedly homemade). For dinner we split he summer salad, muenster cheese/crab soup and the grilled Chicken schnitzel with tomato roasted red pepper sauce. Everything was top notch, fresh and made to order. My only qualms was that the dishes weren't as hot as they could have been. The bibb lettuce in the salad needed to be chopped as the pieces were to big to shovel in my gully. And although the candied bacon on the salad was DYNAMITE, it only came with a few pieces so I felt a tad cheated. The grilled chicken schnitzel was delicious but the spatzel was a bit dry. Besides these minor issues this was a unique dining experience. As far as I know there are only a handful of German restaurants in the entire state, which is a shame because we have quite a few folks in this state with German heritage. Now if I could only get my beer served in one of those finely decorated steins that would make it a truly magical meal!!! Can't wait to venture back. Be sure to NOT be on a diet when eating here though. This is comfort food so leave the calorie counter at home.

Very good, traditional german food. Schnitzels, spatzel, sauerkraut, sauerbrauten, they do it all well. Also a very nicely done beef short rib with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. Nice selection of German beers on tap and in bottles as well as German and Alsatian wines. Service was just a bit sketchy. We ordered a summer salad, again very nice, but it was on the table for maybe two minutes when the entrees arrived. Makes me wonder if the food was cooked to order or just reheated and plated. We should have sent it back and had some time to enjoy the salads. But, other than that hiccup, a very pleasant evening.

Always crowded the Old Stein Inn is a country German resturant that sells an americanized version of German food. If you stick with basics you'll do OK - basicaly Brats and Beer. If you branch out into the more prepared foods then standby for overly cooked and overly sweet foods that would have most Germans standing outside with pitchforks demanding it be shut down. One especially irksome dish was their "Schweinshaxe." They prepared it by braising it, which is OK - it's for lazy chefs that won't take the time to do it properly which is to ROAST the pork knuckle, or at least roast the braised pork knuckle to crisp the skin.

I've sat outside in the biergarten a couple of times but have never sat inside before because why would I when the weather was beautiful. The biergarten is definitely my favorite part and I cannot wait until it opens back up again after winter is over. This was my first visit back after the fire. The renovations inside are an improvement and I love how it seems brighter and more open. I always end up at Old Stein Inn to meet friends and for some reason I never think that I like German food. But I do! That fresh warm Pretzel hits my mouth and it is heavenly. Thank goodness I always go with friends or I would be forced to devour the entire pretzel myself. If you've ever bought a pretzel at an Oktoberfest, you always wish it tasted like this pretzel. ah-ma-zing. It's the best pretzel I've ever had. I'm not exaggerating. Then you have to have to order the Beef Goulash Soup. Sometimes I think restaurants season everything with way too much salt and this is on the salty side but really good. My mom would definitely have to order a cup of hot water to add to this. My friend and I split the bowl and they were kind enough to split it in the kitchen into to small bowls. It was still a lot and thankfully didn't kill me with the salt intake. Order it! The Bavarian Bauernwurst/smoked pork sausages are definitely better than the Knockwurst/beef sausages. I like how you can mix and match and get two different types of wursts. I like to wash it all down with the Framboise Raspberry Lambic.

My girlfriend and I came here for our 6 month anniversary. I couldn't have made a better choice. Everything was great from the get go. It's such a beautiful and charming establishment. The service was excellent. The food was amazing. We started with fried pickles. We both ordered chicken schnitzel as our entrees. They're so big that you could easily split one order up into 2 meals. She got the ice cream pie. I had the "Bienenstich" beesting. The beer was delicious and fairly priced. German imports out the ying yang. I was even able to grab a couple 30th anniversary shirts to commemorate the evening. We can't wait to go back here again.

I will definitely come back. I like Old Stein enough to bring visiting family and friends.

What if I purchase a Stein from the Stein I get discounted refills on beer...say no more! The food is amazing German fair. What do I come here for? Well to put it simply...meat. The snitzel here is great, the traditional pork is my favorite. Best deep fried pickles...said everyone who has ever been here. The dill breading is what sets those off. When it comes to desserts, I have failed. I have been too full off the meal to ever make it that far. This place is a bit if a drive to find but I assure you it's width it.

Seriously delicious German fare!!! Visited Old Stein Inn while visiting friends. My friend and her family are regulars and I can see why. I am so happy I ordered the pretzel appetizer. The dipping sauces were incredible as was the pretzel. My dinner choice was the jäger schnitzel. WOW! So delicious. I opted to skip the cabbage and get extra noodles which was a good decision but I decided upon a side of sauerkraut once the plate arrived and that just made it even more perfect. It just gave the dish that kick I needed. Very good sauerkraut and the pork was perfectly breaded and crispy. The portion is huge but it made for a fabulous lunch the next day. Can't wait to visit next time I'm in town!!

For Maryland, the food can not be beat. A bit off the beaten path, but worth the schlep. The beer selection is pretty good. Only small criticism would be that none of the wait staff we have ever had speak german.

Oktoberfest at the Old Stein Inn. SO. MUCH. FUN. Wasted on good German beer. Stuffed full of the very best schnitzel and wurst. And the polka band played Lady Gaga. 'Nuff said.

Yelp's own Jason H. ( yelp.com/user_details?us… ) has taken over the Old Stein Inn as Executive Chef, and anyone who loves German food should be thanking their lucky stars and getting their butts down to Edgewater. The restaurant is in the middle of nowhere. When we were driving there, we figured we must be lost, until voila! Like a beer beacon in the night, there it was, all lit up, with an entirely full parking lot. The place might have been closed for 9 months, but you'd never know it from the crowd that has been there for its reopening. This place is as authentic as you can get state-side for a biergarden. Bench tables inside and out. The regulars were sitting behind us outside. Several beers on draught, and the waitstaff always has a suggestion for what schnapps to pair with everything. It was like being 16 again. Now, I'm biased since Jason is a friend and I've had his cooking at home before. But it's not often that someone is a great chef in a personal kitchen and in a large restaurant environment, and he has it down. From the fried pickles to the jagerschnitzel and spatzle, I ate until I couldn't walk. The Goulash? Super awesome. House-made Sauerbrate? Om nom nom. Put it all in my face. The deserts were brought in from a local bakery, and were very tasty, but I understand that they will be making their own goodies shortly. Of course this means we'll have to go back soon to see how those stack up. Their grand opening is this weekend and they'll have Oktoberfest goings-on from now till the end of October. Check out their newly re-designed website for their current menu and go make Jason werk for the monay!

After all the hoopla of the reopening of the Old Stein Inn,(and a new German chef ) we decided yet again, to try this place out. The redesign gives them big marks - nice bar area with booths, and lots of wood. (Apparently the bar itself is quite the historic masterpiece being salvaged from Carmine's in NYC). Nice touch for sure. I still think they could do some tweaking on the bare walls, though. Maybe a tapestry or some Oktoberfest memorabilia. The menu was pretty much the same. I had to go for my favorite Austrian/German specialty - the pork schnitzel, spaetzle, and red cabbage. A true delight when it is executed properly. My companion ordered the "special" sandwich, which was a smaller portion of schnitzel, on a pretzel roll with cheese and some other adornments. OK so here comes the MAJOR complaint - our order came out minutes after we placed it. I was probably on my second sip of wine when our meals miraculously appeared. There is no way that they could have prepared the schnitzels that quick, which really surprised me as I think this would be one of the easiest things to cook to order. As a result, the pork seemed dry and the coating was not as crisp as it should have been. Also of note, the pork was quite thick, almost like a boneless chop rather than a pounded piece of meat. More indication that this was cooked ahead of time. Unfortunately too, the meals suffered from the same pre-fire shortcoming - not enough salt. I ordered my pork with a mushroom cream sauce which I had asked to be put on the side. Cream, butter and shrooms, how can you go wrong? Once again, under seasoned and bland. The spaetzel were better, lighter and fluffier, but still blah. A light toss in bacon grease or brown butter could remedy this. The cabbage, though soft, was much more sour than sweet. I prefer a better balance. Companion thought his pretzel roll was completely devoid of flavor. It's too bad too, cause a good one can make an ordinary sandwich great. The fries had promise, but they were under done, limp and soggy. A longer stay in the fry basket would have yielded much better results. We still enjoyed the evening and the new digs. The wandering accordion player added a nice authentic touch with her music and occasional bursts into song. When we arrived home, I picked up our delivered "Capital" newspaper and flipped through the entertainment section. Lo and behold, Terra Walters, our local restaurant critic, just reviewed, the Old Stein Inn. I have stopped reading her articles since they make me CRINGE, but I could not help myself this time. Imagine this, she had nothing but the highest possible accolades about her experience here. You would think it was a Michelin starred establishment. Oh well, at least she was consistent.

The only reason this place gets one star deducted is the cost. The quality of the food is great but it is "white table cloth expensive" when the place, and the food, is really not that fancy. If this place was just a little more reasonably priced it would be a regular hang out but as it is, it is too expensive to be more than a once in awhile place. The food is great, the beer is better, the outside dining area is as good as it gets without being on the water. Service is good as well.

It's been a while since I've had German food, and for my military friends, this is good German cuisine. When we have a table with21 people, bills were spot on, drinks on time, food came out on time and hot, and the servers never lost their smile - it's a great night! Great beers (and I'm not a beer drinker), crispy and not greasy schnitzel with spaetzle - wonderful. Great value and good food!

I had heard about The Old Stein Inn multiple times from friends who used to visit every weekend. Now I see why. What a cool place. We sat inside at a big rustic table and we could see the the beer garden out of the window. It looked very cool! Partially covered, strings of lights and a dressed up band playing German music. I ordered a Creamsicle from the specialty drink menu. She bought it out soon, but it looked and tasted just like a vodka/OJ, the cream was definitely missing. I told the waitress this and she said she'd check with the bartender.. she soon came back with a new drink, in a completely different (martini) glass with a completely different appearance. She was apologetic and said it would be on the house. Did she never see what the Creamsicle looked like before? A bit strange but whatever, at least I got the correct drink. My boyfriend ordered a the sausage and cheese appetizer. I don't even like sausages (or just try not to eat them too often, lol) but they were GREAT. I would highly recommend ordering the sausage. For my meal I ordered the Steak and Frites. It was DELICIOUS. Veggie sides are usually unappealing to me, as they're usually bland but these were some of the best I've ever eaten. The sauce was to die for. The fries were tasty but I would've ordered double veggies if I had known they were going to be so good. The steak was three small filets all cooked perfectly. No fat, no filler, wonderful meat. Yum. I ate everything on my place and the only complaint would be that I wanted more! The portion of my meal wasn't big but I was very satisfied. My boyfriend said his pork, though incredibly tender, was a little dry. During our meal an accordion player and singer stood in the front area of the restaurant and played a couple songs. It wasn't particularly wonderful music but it was entertaining! I really enjoyed my experience at The Old Stein Inn, mostly because I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I will be back soon when the weather gets a little nicer to sit outside and check out the beer garden! Glad to find that I dig German food!

Very good German food, nice service as well. Even the kids are now fans of German cuisine. We will definitely be back!
Reservations suggested for the weekend. Food was excellent and I thought the quality was worth the price. Service was a little slow but friendly. We didn't get to the bier garden but friends say its great. Highly recommend.

I've been here a number of times and have always found it fantastic. The food is excellent, the portions generous, the vast majority of it is locally sourced and authentic, and the specials tend to be something you can't find anywhere else. I've gorged my way through the metzger plate, the pretzels, the wursts, the obatzda, the spaetzle, and as much schnitzel as as could fit in my mouth. I've never found a thing to complain about with the food, and the biergarten atmosphere (in good weather) is pretty spot on. It's a genuine treat to sit out there, staring at the sky, watching the clouds roll past at the end of your meal. Last time I was in, I got my hands on some Venison Carpaccio. I adore all things rare.. steak that passes the Med-Rare mark is a waste of meat in my view. This was superior to any carpaccio I've had. It was meat-sushi. Just a hint of olive oil and basalmic vinegar for the arugala greens, otherwise pure deery goodness. I paired it with a pork-flavored pea soup (hard to describe but excellent) because I wasn't starving, and I focused on the beer. I'm a beer nerd. I've been brewing for over 8 years and I've done every style and method short of owning a malt factory. I have a deep-seated love of beer. I just wish the Old Stein saw what I saw. All ten taps are solid -- there are oktoberfests in September and there will presumably be marzens in March. But it's all the same stuff. It's all "german domestics", the bud lights and coors of Germany. Nothing adventurous. Nothing really unique. At christmas they had an AMAZING weihnachtsbier (14%, deep gold color, spicy and delightful) but I haven't seen anything out of the norm since then. Their website lists so many great styles of beer, but they don't actually have it on hand. When's the last time you tasted an Altbier? Do you remember what makes it unique? Berlinerweisse? Dortmunder? I always end up with the same Doppelbock (Spaten's Optimator) because the German pilsners, as a style, lose a lot of character when they've been shipped a few thousand miles. Everything in the place seems to be Ayinger, Franziskaner/Spaten, or Paulaner. Maybe the distributor is calling the shots. Given the pretty wide bottle menu, they have the freedom to make the ten taps more interesting because they have all the cannons covered. Why not play? Recommendations for broadening the lineup: - Schneider Hopfen Weisse - Einbecker Ur-Bock - Gröninger Pils - Berliner Kindl Weisse - Pils Urquell - Weihenstephan Pilsener If I called the shots, I'd add in some American micros that conform to German styles like Victory's Prima Pils or Alaskan's Amber Alt. You can't go wrong here with the food -- better schnitzel likely doesn't exist in Maryland. Now if only they'd fix the beer menu...

What can I say? Good Beer, Good Sausage, GREAT Sauerkraut! When you need to get your German on....this is the place to do it. A bit pricey, so be ready to shell out!

This wasn't our first visit, but I enjoy the German fare at Old Stein so much I wanted to write a review. My husband and I both had the German shortrib sauerbraten tonight, and a knife was not necessary to cut the meat. The sauerbraten taste was perfect. It's served with red cabbage - YUM - and dumplings and it was great! We had kolsch beer and it's the best. Highly recommended, especially if you like German food.

My husband and I were out on a date night (with a one year old that doesn't happen often!) and came here b/c it was recommended by a friend as we were visiting from out of town. My husband had the knockwursts - less than 12 hours after eating his meal he was sick in bed for 2 days with food poisioning. We called the restaurant the day after to let them know how sick my husband was- the manager answered the phone- told me she would go to let the kitchen know after asking us when we were there to eat. She also asked for my phone number and said she would reach out and find out if there was something she could do for us- not a huge surprised however we have yet to hear back from her. An awful end to our trip home for Christmas home visiting family- with a husband unalbe to leave bed sick for 2 days. Needless to say we will not be back to visit nor recommend to anyone else up in the area!

Old Stein has been a long favorite but after its reopening, it sometimes seemed just too overwhelmed by the throngs trying to get in. Now I can safely say it's as good as I remember. Best place for great German food & beer. And they still have their cheesy crab soup & seafood Mac & cheese--these are real winners.

Went for dinner yesterday- tasted good but why would any one serve expensive German beer in a plastic mug? Yaeger schnitzel- never breaded ever-Schnitzel always pounded thin never served thick as you do. Mine was thrown on top of spatzle which crushed it-the noodles were small and soft. Red cabbage-almost over cooked and chopped twice as fine as should be-prices were high- yes lots of food but I dont want two portions to pay for just one- find out how to cook German food. Tasted good but not right-for that money it needs to be right.

A nice little german place with good food and a great beer selection. Upon entering, the first thing I noticed was how incredibly loud it was. I thought the place was going to be packed and we wouldn't be able to get a seat... fortunately, that wasn't the case. The interior dining room was an intimate place, not meant to house a large crowd - and the small crowd it can fit is so confined that it makes hearing anything nearly impossible. The ambiance was a little dull - not much effort put into decor. The biergarten outside was pretty impressive, but it was closed the night we went so... :( The food was very well made, authentic german cuisine. The fried pickles were PERFECT! Entrees were pretty large (as with most places now adays) and tasty, but the dessert was mediocre. Overall, I had a really hard time justifying the 100$ that we spent on dinner for 2...

Best German food I've had here in the states. Delicious appetizers, a good selection of drinks, all of which came in the appropriate glass, and the most tender jagerschnitzel I've ever had made it well worth the drive and price. A little out of the way, but well worth it, we can't wait to go back during Oktoberfest.

I'm not a German food expert, even though I have been to Germany but I know what I like, and I like the Old Stein Inn. It's a heck of drive to get there. Definitely a destination location as opposed to someplace you may "catch on the way" somewhere. With that said, the Old Stein is appropriately Bavarian in decor and while you may not find yourself transported to the Black Forest... It's close enough. The outdoor Bier Garten is charming and thankfully they have replaced the old plastic chairs (a la Safeway) with nice sturdy mesh and metal seats which are quite comfortable. Of course, you could also choose to sit at one of the long wooden tables and benches if you are of the mind. They have a decent German Beer selection, 9 permanent varieties and a rotating 10th Beer selection of a seasonal nature. For me, though, the food is where it's at. We stopped by this past weekend for the Fourth of July and truly enjoyed ourselves. I had the Weisswurst ( a personal favorite) and the Bauerenwurst. Excellent quality sausages cooked perfectly and accompanied with a tangy German potato salad and sauerkraut. The kraut was laden with bacon, which I do love, but if I had a complaint for the meal, it was a bit greasy. Others had the Weinerschnitzel and the Chicken Cordon Blue. It was not busy so when one of my dining companions asked if the Weinerschnitzel could be prepared with a fried egg, our server graciously complied. If you want to know, it's called A La Holstein, to have it that way. The schnitzel was top notch. Crisp exterior, tender veal with anchovies and lemon. The chicken Cordon Blue was equally delicious and came with red cabbage and oodles of buttery spaetzle, which I thought was delicious but others percieved as bland. The place is a bit pricey, but the quality of the food is certainly there. Service was exemplary. I can't say enough good things about our waiter. He was pleasant, knowledgeable and efficient. One last note, if you go... do yourself a favor and order the Apple Cheesecake pie for dessert. You'll thank me later.

Hostess seated us where we wanted in a nice German styled booth. Dinner was pretty good though it was good in a GermanAmerican way which is what my friends that lived in Germany for three years described it. If you go dont forget to get a pretzel.

We went out to brunch for Mother's Day at the Old Stein Inn. It was great. The fellas and I got the Über "Large" Frühstück. Basically, three eggs, bacon, sausage, two pancakes and home fries. I don't usually eat the home fries but these were very good. My wife got the Bauernfrühstück. Kind of a big mash of breakfast stuff with pickles. She liked it. We'll definitely go back.

Waited over 45 minutes for dinner and right after we were served the people that came in 25 minutes after us were served. The waitress said sorry we have no bread tonight. We live very close to Old Stein and I don't think I'll be back anytime soon.

I'm giving this five stars only because I have been going here for two years and always had an awesome meal, however, had today been my first meal it certainly would have been my last. The management should take note of the shockingly unprofessional hostess (mousy light brown hair w/ glasses) who screwed up our 3-week old Father's Day reservation for 20 then refused to fix it despite that it was entirely fixable. Thankfully, the rest of the servers recognized the problem and bent over backwards to accomodate our party--they scoped out a table for us and with smiles, apologized for the problem and worked as a team to provide incredible customer service. Given the rest of the personalities on staff there, that hostess' nasty attitude is a glaring sore thumb. We lived in Germany for years--and much of my family has as well--so it should say something that we all drive 45 minutes from Bethesda/Rockville for this meal a few times a year. Their food is AUTHENTIC, well portioned yet inventive and well priced. There is a great selection of German beer on tap as well as wines (both German and other) and fun alcoholic drinks (the one my husband ordered was so strong!) Appetizers are perfect for sharing over drinks. Be sure to get an outdoor table and check their website--the entertainment is great fun!! Don't forget to tip your accordian player!! :) These performers really put on a show! Get there early, don't skimp on your time as you will want to spend as much as you can there throughout the three ample courses with alcohol. There were a number of large parties there tonight and the servers handled it skillfully--food was timely served, hot and somehow accurate!

Wow this place was great. My coworkers had good things to say but it exceeded my expectations. I had the bratwurst and it was amazing. The beer selection was excellent and for a cold/rainy night we sat outside in the beer garden under the heaters. I can't wait to go back. The reviews on the jager schnitzel were excellent too. Btw, I don't care for sauerkraut and I couldn't get enough of theirs!

This wasn't the greatest German food I've ever had, but it was pretty good. The beer selection was great and varied. Wonderful, fast service... there was a group of 20 or so people ahead of us, and the waitress came back to explain that there would likely be a delay in our food. None whatsoever as far as we could tell, and our food came out immediately after the large groups--in a respectable 10-15 min.

We had a wonderful meal in the garden. Beer, food, and entertainment was great. We had crispy delicious potato pancakes with real applesauce for an appetizer and braised pork hocks and jaeger schnitzel for entrees. The red cabbage and spatzel sides stole the show though. Great ambiance and a very good band made for a memorable evening.

A great way to celebrate the ceremonial end of summer, bier with friends in a close to authentic biergarten! I really do enjoy the food here, the menu covers what I consider authentic dishes as well as "americanized" dishes as well. The bier and wine menu's are great, and the seasonal 10th tap is always a real treasure! Sitting in the outdoor garden, with good friends, great bier, some pretzels and wurst and I am a happy camper. The food is good here, the schnitzle and dare I even say, the "schnitzle cordon blue" are great dishes. I love the pretzels, not completely authentic, but any pretzel is a good one, and these are good ones. Also the desert selection is very solid, just enough choices to pacify your crowd and top off a great meal.

Tried that place again after it burned down! My opinion about the food is the same. Not very impressed with it! Substitution of side dishes are NOT possible at the weekend! Really? Folks! We Germans do not eat with every main meal Spätzle and red cabbage. Especially not our Schnitzels? So we tried to change it in fries (which were already on the menu and not an exotic thing to do) and it was not possible. German bread was served and very stale and like my hubby said "shaved." If I would try to make a "German Sandwich" it would not even hold the deli on it so thinly sliced was it. Ridiculous! If I decide to come ever back I will go just for the really nice beer garden, the beer selection and perhaps I would eat something very simple or just an appetizer. For me it is not all about "Blasmusik and Zicke zacke hoi hoi hoi! " Its also about the food. The term cuisine can not even be used for that place!!! Maybe a harsh comment but I speak honestly up! "Mahlzeit!"

Awesome. While I live 1 mile to the east, I haven't been this close to Germany in years. I showed up at 5:45 and figured it would be a short wait at most. No, I had an one hour wait ahead of me and my daughter. This didn't seem like a problem since the bar was open and you could go out front with your beer for your wait. Did I mention that they have REAL German beer on tap? Yes, 9 standards and a random tenth. Awesome. Now, the food. The rolladen I ate was on second best to my first wife's mother's food and my first wife was German. Everything was awesome. I only wished that I had called ahead and got in line for a seat outside in the Biergarten. They had a live polka band that my daughter begged me to see when we got done dinner. She loved it. I loved it. We will be back.

Hubby and I have been here twice. The first time was during the winter, we sat at the bar and had a couple beers and appetizers. I was very impressed with the quality of food, and beer selection. We returned this past weekend to check out the beer garden. The garden was really nice. The location is convenient to Annapolis, so I can see us coming here with some regularity. But if I trekked her from B-more or DC, I might be a little disappointed. The food is good, and I think prices are fair. But this is definitely more about the beer and big crowds (communal picnic tables) than the food. Expect the average body mass index to be on the high end, with both servers and patrons. This would be a great place to have a birthday party...if you didn't have to drive.

Dinner here is always excellent! I have never had anything that is just okay. The chef (Dirk) is a fine cuisine chef. He makes the BEST crabcakes I have ever had! My friends love the schnitzel. We have had schnitzel in Germany that is not as good as Chef Dirk's! Of course, the beer is amazing! I always get the Tenth Tap because I like to try new things. You have to go for Oktoberfest! The biergarten is so much fun! See you there!

Here goes, we've been to the Old Stein Inn four times in the past few months. Hard to believe we had not known about this place until recently. I wish I had visited prior to the fire. But all in all, we have not been disappointed. The schnitzel has been very good, sauerkraut and red cabbage, seemingly well done. Beer selection is spot on. Reminds me of trips to Germany. I'm a fan. The Biergarten is great fun, even on a chilly night, the heaters make it warm and welcoming. Fried pickles are a must, I recommend just noshing through a selection of appetizers and drinking beer. Always leave over stuffed, but wanting to return the next day.

You'll forget you're in southern MD / Edgewater as you pull into the parking lot. OK, maybe you'll see some locals and then remember where u are, but once in the door you'll be in Germany, or at least what I think Germany might resemble. Epic draft beer selection, including the special 10th tap seasonal. I think you'll be hard pressed to find some of these beers on draft here in the States. Great atmosphere, brilliant beer garden, and wonderful, filling, tasty German food. My top restaurant in Edgewater and my top German restauran in the universe. Get all the wursts you can! The pretzels are wonderful as well! Ugh!

Pre-Fire Old Stein Inn gets 5 stars, hands down. Amazing food that you crave, warm and engaging wait staff, and 10th taps that are rare and amazing. After the post-fire rebuilding though, it seems that the kitchen staff and most of the wait staff have been replaced. I guess that's to be expected, but the result is a sharp change in the taste of the food and lacking service. What used to be my absolute favorite restaurant is now just ok. Top the ok food and lacking service with high prices though, and you can count me out. The potato salad just isn't the same, the schnitzel was dried up and leathery, and all the menu changes (burgers? seriously?) are uninspiring. The new decor feels more like a standard US-chain restaurant than anything. High prices (even on cheap german beer that you can find at any nearby store), lower quality food, and a new menu that screams that the old stein is losing its way, just make me want to go someplace else. That's a sad, sad day my friends.

This place is amazing. Beautiful inside and out in the biergarden. The chef is incredible and always coming up with innovative, yummy specials (I know- I eat there A LOT). Bartenders/servers/management could not be friendlier. Fresh, tasty, wonderful :)

Great beer selection. Nice menu, but the food was below average for a American German restaurant. Chicken Cordon Bleu was overcooked and slightly burned. Jaeger Schnitzel was tough with not quite enough sauce. Had to pay $4.50 for more sauce. Spatzel was tasteless. Potato salad was more American than German.

Cozy German Biergarten... a bit of a trek from DC but well worth it. We drank and dined outside, beneath the white lanterns, twinkle lights, and grape vines, on a most mild summer's dusk. Our conversation was not stifled by the German accordion player, instead it provided a nice upbeat accompaniment. As a vegetarian I knew options would be limited..but still I was very pleased with the Vegetable Spaetzel. Everyone else seemed to really like their schitzel and wurst...so much I think we all developed stomach aches from overindulging. And anyway, German food is pretty heavy. There was also a great selection of German beers...I particularly enjoyed the Kirsch. Light...crisp...perfect for the Summer months. Prosit!

How many times can you say, "nice weiner schnitzel" in public and no one laughs at you? I had dinner here tonight and it was very good. I am not always a huge fan of German food, but this place was great. It was a Sunday night, so the crowds were light. The service was a bit slow, but we were with friends, so it really was good. Great Octoberfest beer! The dessert was great- homemade hazelnut torte. Very good and well worth the drive from the DC area!

We LOVE the Old Stein Inn! What a fantastic little place that offers a great authentic German menu. Be sure to try the crab soup... it is one of a kind and keeps us coming back for more! Sitting outside in the "Biergarten" is a fantastic way to spend the evening, especially if mike Surrat and the Continentals are playing.

Very popular and there can be a long wait on weekends. German food is great and the German beer selection even better.

Not much selection for vegetarians but, my family friend from Austria was really impressed with how authentic the german food was here. I got the gemuse "vegetable" platter and there are some seafood dishes also. They have a beer garden in the summer and a large lis of german beers and wines. The red cabbage is delicious and the munster cheese crab soup is to die for!. This place for a long time I passed and I thought it was a run down building but, since then they fixed it up and made it less dark and scary looking. The inside decor is like one from your Oma' or Opa's house with flower wall paper and wooden floors and wind up cukoo clocks etc.. Service is fast, food is delicious!. On the weekends they can get busy so, it is best to make reservations early!.

Many German beers on menu. I can say that it leans Southern German. The staff is friendly, and there is an outdoors German beer garden open during the summer. The food selection is a bit more limited. I'd focus on just the beer when heading over here. By the way, its about 15 minutes outside of Annapolis, in the middle of a wooded residential area.

Great food and really good service. I do think, however, the beer prices are a bit on the high side. I would recommend this to everybody!

Food: Very very good. Get the pork shank...it's delicious. The cauliflower fried egg roll sort of thing is good...the meat and cheese sampler app is lots of fun. The beer selection is interesting. Even though German beers are a bit mild for my taste, I still enjoy drinking here. The beer garden is great and inside feels very European. The waitstaff has been excellent on every visit.

If you like German food, or HELL, if you just like German BEER...and happen to be in the Annapolis area, you should come here. My boyfriend and I went just for the Oktoberfest, and got all we were expecting. Great beer, great food, and even a live accordion player for the season. The menu IS a bit pricey, but if you look at it this way, you are saving money on the plane ticket. The chef is authentic German, and his food is DEF on point. I'd lived in Germany for three years, and go back at least once a year to visit, so I believe I do have some experience there. The staff is amazingly friendly as well, we sat at the bar, and they were nice enough to sneak us a small shot... The decor is definitely authentic, and while I didn't visit the outdoor beer garden on this visit, I have in the past when the weather was more amicable. If you are a vegitarian, you might have a hard time picking out a meal. But then again, if you are in Germany, you will find the same. One note, if you get any beer with the word "Doppel" in it....just know, that Doppel means double, and yes, I think that it just MIIIGHT be pertaining to the alcohol content of the beer. Oh yes....! I loved my doppel beer, you just gotta know what you are getting into is all.. Thanks Chef Dirk!

My boyfriend is a german-ophile (was going to say germ-ophile but thought better of it with the recent flu pandemic) and has been wanting to try this place out for awhile. He lives in Odenton, so for us it was only about a 30 minute drive, but it's not near anything. At all. So we roll up to a very full, dark parking lot but end up finding a space after taking a round. I was not expecting it to be so hoppin' though it was a saturday night, so live and learn. We weren't told how long our wait would be, but like I said, the place was full so we tried to head to the bar to get a beer. No dice, too crowded so we made a beeline for the only bench in the "waiting area." Fast forward 35 minutes. Our older but very friendly waitress showed us the menu but wasn't able to answer a single question about the beer selection, didn't ask me what size beer i wanted (ended up with .5 liter of pretty good beer though) and brought my boyfriend the wrong beer. Not so good. I ordered the potato pancakes, which were great but deep fry a potato and you have me at hello. He got the crab soup, which was super rich but really good. I had the schnitzel cordon blue and he had the jager-something schnitzel--creamy mushroom sauce over the breaded pork. I'd say overall the food was really fun and different, the beer was good (although I'd prefer they have a little more knowledge about what's being served) but it's pricey and out of the way. Meh, 50/50. Will go back just because the boyfriend usually treats.

This place is great. I have been to Germany more than a dozen times and find the food and atmosphere to be very authentic. Chef Carl's Jaegerschnitzel was excellent. Even better, the German beer selection was really good. They even have the lace curtains that are so popular in Europe. Our group had 4 kids and they have an adequate kids menu. Can't wait to go back once the weather is warmer to try out the outdoor biergarten.

Before the fire, 5 stars wouldn't have been enough for this restaurant. I've been to Germany and the Old Stein Inn not only rivaled the restaurants there, but were much better than many. However, it pains me to say that since it reopened after the fire, it is a completely different restaurant. I heard the cook went back to Germany and the restaurant is now trying to have a more healthy menu, which goes against what the traditional kind of German food basically is. They got rid of some of their best dishes and replaced them with other healthier alternatives and they completely changed the recipes of many of their old items, such as their spatzle. Even the beer menu is about half of what it used to be. If their old cook ever comes back from Germany, I really hope he comes back to the Old Stein Inn and bring it back to what it once was because I really don't see the restaurant lasting much longer in it's current state.

Love this place when in the mood for good hearty German food. i was not sure what to order, I ordered the Old Stein Sampler and was not disappointed. The sampler included a kassler rippchen (smoked loin pork chop) , bratwurst, and mini pork schnitzel served with spätzle and red cabbage. All very good and portion was just right as I was not too full. German bier selection is very good with my favorite on tap,Spaten Optimator Dunkle "DK". Make sure you get reservations for the BierGarten. Nice atmosphere and musisc.

Great for Beer.... Wish I could expand. Seriously go for the appetizers and drink beer. And that's it.

Don't know what happened since they rebuilt it but, the food is not what it used to be. We ordered the sampler plater and jagerschnitzel. . . the bratwurst was great but the schnitzel fell short. . the breading was different and the meat didn't seem tenderized and tasted old and could tell it was frozen before

This place used to be outstanding. Not any more. The menu is not the same. The goulash soup tasted like it came from a can. The sauerbraten is NOT even close to being sauerbraten It is just tasteless meat covered in a sauerbraten like gravy. The red cabbage had no flavor. The staff was rude and knows nothing of German cruise. When I told the waiter that sauerbraten should be marinated, he responded that we can't do that here. WHAT? I was stunned! This is so disappointing since this was a such a wonderful restaurant for so many years. To add insult to injury, the bad food is expensive. We need to find a good German restaurant in AA county!

This was my first time eating German food at any German restaurant and let me just say it was a great first experience. I came here with a wedding party after a wedding rehearsal so we had a three different dishes we could've chose room. 1. Steak and Fries 2. German short ribs and 3. Eggplant Schnitzel. I got the steak and fries and it was delicious, I was kind worried because they didn't ask me how I wanted my steak cooked, but when I got my food, it was right on point! My boyfriend got the Eggplant Schnitzel and even though I am not a big fan of eggplant, I think I would've eaten it! It was delicious and a very generous portion. My brother's girlfriend got the third choice, the German short ribs and it was so tender! It was almost like pot roast! Overall my experience at the Old Stein Inn was great! I enjoyed every bit of my meal! and tidbits of those around me! hehe

Awesome hidden gem in terms of german food Excellent beer selection Great presentation of food Food taste excellent itself Interior looks great. Clean Relaxing..... If you're looking for a good time with your friends or spouse check it out you won't be disappointed

(5)Ellen L.

Don't have time to review as I would like but had to put a prelim out there. Best German in the state
(5)Karen S.

(5)Katherine S.
Authentic German food. Good choices of beer. good sausage and impressive liverwurst. Mnchner Schweinhaxe is my favorite dish, lick the plate out!
(4)Andrew M.

(5)Suzy B.
(5)Drew M.
(4)Gary B.
(2)Judy M.
(5)Annie L.
Weird.
(4)Sabina B.
Good food but our server could have been more attentive.
(3)Dwight S.
(5)City G.
(4)Kevin L.
I've eaten at The Old Stein Inn about a half dozen times and have never been disappointed. The food is always delicious (had the sauerbraten this time), they have a great assortment of German beers, and the service was spot on. If you like German food and haven't been here yet, you have to give it a try.
(5)Rocco T.
Short rib Sauerbraten was excellent! The chicken schnitzel was moist and flavorful!
(4)Witch H.
Fun menu, lots of options, even egg-free ones.
(4)Gary S.
WOW! Great restaurant great food great service! I recommend this place! Authentic German food great taste great flavoring awsome place. The choices of beer is very good. I cant say enough about this place. I did get lucky with getting seated without a reservation. Make a reservation and sit in the beer garden.
(5)Kevin G.
(4)Lesley G.
(4)Olive B.
Fabulous outing while In neighborhood . Great beer garden and service, suggestions and helpful tips etc. Delicious rye bread and liverwurst - everything else was bonus. Great outing with fun and new plates ...thanks for your service!!
(5)Christopher J.
(5)Stephanie M.
I really liked this place. We had a great, authentic German meal and there was a really nice lady playing the accordian and singing German songs. The outside patio looked very inviting but we opted to sit inside because of the hot weather.
(5)Dana Z.
(5)Allison H.
Recommend!
(4)TJ B.

Visited here under recommendation from a friend. Not my forte, unfortunately.

(4)Katrina W.

(4)Gerry S.

(4)A C.
Very good German food, nice service as well. Even the kids are now fans of German cuisine. We will definitely be back!
(5)Kendall W.
This place isn't bad, but there is room for improvement. Our dinner was alright, brats were yummy but my schnitzel was very dry ( had great flavor though) and sides were delicious. However Where this place lost it's stars was service ( our waitress was MIA for most of the evening) and our beer and water glasses were empty. I was also extremely let down by my desert. I got the espresso creme brûlée. It had a nice sugar crust but was completely liquid. It was the consistency of half & half and neither myself or my date could eat it!
(3)Melissa K.

(4)Patti G.

(4)conrad b.

(4)Larissa I.
(5)Patrick H.
(4)Alyssa S.
Hostess seated us where we wanted in a nice German styled booth. Dinner was pretty good though it was good in a GermanAmerican way which is what my friends that lived in Germany for three years described it. If you go dont forget to get a pretzel.
(3)Goofy D.
(4)Kathie B.
Waited over 45 minutes for dinner and right after we were served the people that came in 25 minutes after us were served. The waitress said sorry we have no bread tonight. We live very close to Old Stein and I don't think I'll be back anytime soon.
(1)Ginger S.

Honestly, I love everything about Old Stein. I love the food. I love the decor. I love the people who work there. I love the beer.

A good place to... "Get Sour on Some Krauts!" Delicious food & beer. I must return to see the band. Wunderbar!

"Mahlzeit!"

WAY overrated! Food was bland and not appealing to look at when it came out.

Great time in the beer garden. The food was fantastic an the service was just as good. Cherry strudel was great, don't miss it. Such a gem so close to my home. A must go...

I love this place. I took my wife there recently and she was skeptical that she would enjoy German food. She loved it! The food was delicious, the atmosphere was great. It is a little pricey, but other than that it is fantastic.
(4)Nick Z.
The goulash soup was excellent. Unfortunately, the chicken jagerschnitzel was nearly flavor-free. Kinda a shame, really.

(5)Ken O.
(2)Jason K.
The fire damage has been repaired with extensive renovation. The place looks great. Looking forward to returning.

(4)Cici W.
(5)John S.
Very popular and there can be a long wait on weekends. German food is great and the German beer selection even better.
(5)Jessica P.
(4)Phil B.
(4)Travis R.
Great food and really good service. I do think, however, the beer prices are a bit on the high side. I would recommend this to everybody!
(5)Dirty T.

I'm not a German food fan but this place is a treasure for those who do. The beer garden atmosphere is fun and , of course, great for kids.

(4)Alex T.

Love this place! Great food, especially the pretzels and brats.
(5)Mark C.

I enjoyed every bit of my meal! and tidbits of those around me! hehe
