My family has been coming to Peking since we moved to Columbia in 1993. No other Chinese restaurant we have visited since then has been able to stand up to the quality of Peking Chef. Yeah, I know, that's saying a lot. They don't try to overseason the food or get too fancy with it. It's just good food, period. Anyone who believes that the food is bland has been eating the wrong stuff. The sauces aren't too thin or too thick. Chicken dishes are made with all breast meat, none of the scrappy crap you find in most other places. They will custom-make any dish you request. The owners in the last couple of months have expanded the seating area and added sushi to the menu. This is nice, family-run restaurant. When we have out-of-town guests we always take them to Peking - none have ever complained about not liking it.

This restaurant absorbed the sushi place next door and opened their own sushi counter. Unfortunately it's not good. Sushi isn't really something that should be sort of good. The salmon in my salmon roll was grey, the hamachi was questionable. We tried crab rangoons, but they were terrible. The wonton wrapping the filling was rock hard, and the filling itself was cream cheese. No evidence of making any effort to at least include something that resembled crab. I don't mind spending $50 on dinner, but when it's this bad, it's really irritating. The search for a good Chinese place goes on.

With renovation, the decor is so much better. I think I'll go more often. I like their chicken and string beans. Lo mein was pretty tasty, too.

Worst Kung Pao Chicken I have ever had. Won Ton soup had no flavor, very poor quality. Chow fun chicken and Moo Shu chicken fair quality. Would never go there again. It was Christmas Day evening, maybe regular kitchen help off but I think its just a bad place to go.

Yet again, a hit! This is our go-to Chinese carry out place. Kung Pao Chicken, Hunan Chicken, and Double Cooked Pork. All good. Combo fried rice is pretty good, too. Don't get the lousy egg rolls. Oddly, this place is always empty (but the do great carry out business) while the Italian restaurant next door (Luna Bela) is always packed. One day, we'll try the Italian place.

This place is right down the street from our house so it's really convenient but everything we've gotten there has been really good. They use actual chunks of meat! Other places I've gotten sesame chicken or general tso chicken with chunks of fat. I've never dined in but their carry out has always been good.

I grew up eating at this restaurant and we used to go almost weekly. The food used to be amazing. Over time it seemed like the restaurant became worse in quality. Our cream cheese wontons came to our table still frozen, entrees were becoming colder. They stopped serving a small sherbert and hot cloth after dinner. This year my mother tried ordering carry out and was overcharged. Thankfully she knew what she should be paying so they weren't able to take advantage of her. Tonight was by far the worst and I will no longer be a customer. I went on a Friday night and we were the only people in the restaurant! We didn't go at an odd time, Luna Bella next door was packed. At the end of the meal we tried using one of the coupons they have on THEIR website. They wouldn't accept the coupon, then when we asked to see the manager the owner came out and literally yelled at us. I'm still in shock. I can't say I won't be pleased when they go out of business. I'm sure it's not far off with the lack of customers (and apparently customer service).

Had lunch here today. The lunch menu is broad and affordable priced. Loved the tea. Service was quick and friendly. We got beef lo me in, mu shu vege, and combo fried rice. Everything was tasty!!

Was charged double per sushi roll cause I substituted shrimp instead of tuna and was not told about the charge up. Not the way to do business.

I ordered delivery online and it was at my house 1/2 later - great service. The food was hot and delicious! We definitely will order from here again!

Amazing sushi/rolles. I had a few different rolles and Misou soup, cheap and amazing! I was just about to go next door because of average reviews, I am glad I didn't.

This place was great. A whole menu devoted to vegetarian food. Yes! Plus it wasn't overly oily or heavy, just delicious and pretty unique. The mock chicken was rolled tofu papers. Pretty neat. Ill definitely be ordering from here for years to come.

I have been going to Peking Chef since about 1992. Since then I have introduced many people to their absolutely fine dining. Some make it a priority to visit the restaurant whenever they come to town. Between countless family and business meals I have found the food to be top notch - always served fresh, hot, and with a friendly smile. I do NOT care for the huge televisions as they distract from paying attention to those with whom you are dining. At least the volume isn't too loud and the music selections are still pleasant for a low stress dining experience.

I had the wonton soup and house salad with ginger dressing to start off with. The salad was very fresh and the dressing is so good. The soup was good and the crispy strips that come with it were definitely fresh. I had the California roll B with masago, Boston roll, and spicy crunch shrimp roll. All were very good and fresh! The Boston roll was my favorite with the sweet sauce added. Also ask for the spicy mayo sauce is a must get. They are relatively inexpensive and have some good lunch deals. Oh and the tea on the table is always hot and good.

This place is pretty terrible. The food is very bland. I had the sesame chicken. All of our food came out cold. The service is particularly bad too. They brought us a to-go bag and it had a dead maggot on it. I've been here twice and not impressed either time. There's a reason why it's always empty. Not sure what these other positive reviews are about.

We have been going to Peking Chef since LONG before their remodel. The food is inexpensive, and consistently good. This is one of the few area Chinese restaurants where we can find cheese-filled wontons, and will often go to Peking Chef just for them, rather than other, often closer options. Unlike some other area Chinese restaurants, Peking Chef's food is not overly oily or "heavy". We will continue to eat here for years to come.

My rating is based mainly on the service and not the food. The food is decent. I never choose to go there, but have gone along when my wife has asked me to go. As stated above, I have never been overly impressed by the service in the past, but today was a new low and the last time that we will ever go there. We went in around 12:30 pm and were the only customers in the restaurant. We sat down and the waitress (who I believe is also the owner) just dropped the menus on the corner of the table and walked away. She never came back to see if we were ready to order, so after about ten minutes I had to get up to get her to come and take our order. I believe that on at least a couple of previous occasions we were overcharged and we had to point it out to them. I don't remember this ever causing a problem in the past. Today, we were overcharged for two items - our soup and my daughter's order (only 65 cents total), but I remember it happening in the past and it was more of a principle thing to me. I politely explained both of the errors to our waitress and she informed informed me that our daughter's order was not considered part of the lunch special even though she ordered it that way (lo mein combination but without the meat). My wife and I asked why she didn't explain that to us at the time, especially since the meat usually makes something more expensive, not less expensive. She didn't really give us an answer and just responded that she did us a favor by not charging us full price. She then asked if I wanted to pay the house price or my price (seemingly disregarding that we were also overcharged on the soup) and I told her my price. She loudly make a comment about her business and walked off with my bill and credit card. Unfortunately, this all took place in front of the handful of other customers that had come into the restaurant. My wife was shocked that anyone (let alone the likely owner of a restaurant) would act like that to customers, especially in front of other customers, and asked me if she minded if she and our kids could wait outside while the bill was being paid because she was so uncomfortable with the woman's behavior. I paid the bill and as I was walking out she loudly and sarcastically said to me "thank you Brian - God bless you." Needless to say we are never going back. I have always felt that the service was average at best, but the woman's actions to treat a customer like that (even if she felt the customer was in the wrong) and over what really amounted to less than $1.00 is no way to run a successful business.

"Meh" really does sum it up well. If strong flavors and distinctive character are important to you, this is not the place. If you like all your dishes to taste basically the same regardless of their ingredients, then by all means, give it a shot. The beef lo mein was utterly bland. It wasn't "bad" because that would imply some kind of...well, taste. But it was like eating when you have a cold--you can feel it in your mouth, but there's nothing to it. The orange beef was the same, although there was a hint of citrus to the blandness. The tuna and salmon sashimi, while fresh, had almost no flavor whatsoever. It was almost spooky how devoid of taste it was. It reminded me of the fish I buy when I roll my own sushi. I expect non-flash-frozen and truly fresh fish in my restaurant sushi. A good piece of salmon should be buttery and smooth, not just non-lethal. The dragon roll was the same. The rice was tasteless and even the smoked eel was mild (and I use "mild" only because I can't think of another synonym for "tasteless"). We were feeling lazy and had gotten their delivery menu in the mail so thought we'd try it. Now that we have, I'd rather just have leftovers.

Came here with friends as a standby for P.F. Changs-- apparently other people had the same idea of a movie and chinese food on Christmas. Our friends who had been here before said the food and service is usually good, and I take them at their word. Unfortunately, first impressions are everything, espcially if the dining experience doesn't pan out. There was a lot not to like--full tea pots were on the table, but there weren't any cups to go with them for over 20 minutes. By the time we had them the first pots were cold. Soup was good (it's had to mess up wonton soup, IMO). I ordered spring rolls, a friend at the other end of the table ordered egg rolls. They both came on one plate and were placed at the center of the table. A minor inconvenience, but an un-needed one-- how hard is it to put individually ordered appetizers on individual plates? When the main entrees came out every single one was cold. I ordered the "Combination Stew," which was supposed to come with scallops, duck meat, a few little chunks of chicken, and shrimp. My wife ordered a vegetarian dish. When her dish came out it was presesnted to me as "combination stew," even though all protein (see above) was missing, and it was clearly her dish-- it had potatoes, string beans, some carrots, and peas. My wife looked at it when it was placed down and asked the server, "what's supposed to be in this?" His response: "combination stew." For what it was, it was good, but it wasn't combination stew! When the server came back with the rest of the table's (cold) entrees, I told him "this isn't combination stew." In what can only be described as a monosylabbic debate, he said "yes," as in, there was no way it could not be combination stew. I told him "no, it isn't" and that it was missing chicken, duck, scallops, and shrimp, and that it was only vegetables. He then ran back to get the original order form the waiter took and asked me what I ordered. I repeated that I ordered "Combination Stew" and pointed to it on the form. After that he said, "oh. it was missed." No sorry, no nothing. Just "it was missed." About 15 (or so) minutes later, it finally came out, with a very casual apology. It was delicious, and, as an added bonus, it was hotter than everyone else's entree. One star for service (or lack thereof), with an extra star for the entree being hot and tasty when I eventually got it.

I am not fond of many Chinese restaurants in my area. Their food is either too sweet or too salty and or both. The reason I like this place is because their food isn't too salty and it is not sweet. Their Pu Pu platter is tasty and I like their shrimp toast a lot. The beef sticks are good too. I am a fan of spare ribs and these ribs are wonderful. I have eaten here a few times and I have also done take out over a dozen times. Every time I've had food from here it has been good. The wanton or hot and sour soup is good. I really like the Mongolian beef here as well as the chicken with stir fried string beans. If you want something that isn't on the menu ask them and most likely they can make it to order. I have done this a few times and it's come out exactly as I wished. Try this place out when you get the chance. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

It's only a 3 star rating, but that that's entirely appropriate for a good family run restaurant. Just finished dinner with some friends and our kids- party of 12 all together. The dining room is open and gets a little noisy with the hard floors and 8 kids, but not in a bad way. We had cashew chicken, crispy beef, chicken lo mein, assorted steamed dumplings, and some spicy tuna rolls. Perhaps we have pedestrian suburbanite tastes, but we enjoyed our meals, particularly the sushi. There were no obvious quality gaffes, which is also consistent with our takeout experiences (unlike Hunan Manor, which is better known but always leaves me a little non-plussed). Service was a little erratic, but it looked like our server was a teenage family member, so our expectations weren't very high. Oh, and we fed 12 adults and kids for 75 bucks before tip. That is a pretty good value, especially in this zip code. So in summary, if you like decent Chinese food served in an unpretentious, family-style establishment pay Peking Chef a visit, and feel free to bring the kids- we broke the place in for you.

It's hard to be a 5 star chinese place that's not Peking Gourmet Inn in Bailey's Crossroads in VA. This place is quite good. It's never too crowded but never dead. They have decent hours, and also good food and prices. There are a few things that will be really quite good here. Get the Chicken Peking Style. Lightly fried, mildly spicy, and you'll be surprised how good it is. Also try the lamb. Good egg rolls and hot and sour soup too. I've been here a few times and it's always been enjoyable. They've got TVs and the decor isn't too much like your traditional Chinese place. I don't know anything about sushi really, but I was satisfied with the rolls I got here. A good place to visit, and the liquor store two doors down is good here too.

Since China Chefs closed my husband and I have been trying out the other local Chinese places in hopes of finding a suitable replacement and I think we've found it! We tried out the Shrimp Rolls, Wonton Soup, Dumplings, and the Chicken and Broccoli. I was expecting the Chicken and Broccoli to be a little bit spicier but even without it was still great. Extremely satisfied with the food (delicious) and the delivery (on time, polite). The one down side to the meal was that there wasn't any rice with the order? I'm not sure if I misread the menu and should have ordered it separately or if they forgot to include it. No big damper on our meal, just did some rice ourselves while scarfing everything else down.

I thinly everything about this place is good. The sushi is awesome and very fairly priced. I recommend the tornado roll. The food is also good. I didn't give it five stars only because the service has been pretty poor every time I have been, but gets the job done. The food however is great.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
