Yum! Love thier Chicken Tikka Masala, Veggie Kohrma, and Veggie Samosas. Only downside is slow service sometimes.

the food here is way too greasy. the couple times we ate here some dishes even looked like meat sitting in pure grease. akbar is way better, unfortunately.

Prices are very reasonable. The chutneys, lassi, naan, channa marsala and tandoori fish that we got were delicious. Some of the most authentic we've had. Moreover, the service was impeccable. Our water glasses were never empty and our pappadum basket was kept full.

I went here with my cousin and his wife on a Saturday night. We ordered all vegetarian items, so I cannot speak for the non-veg selection. The palak (saag) paneer was perfectly spiced and the paneer cubes were very tasty. The vegetable biryani was nice and spicy and had ample vegetables in it. The malai kofta was nice and creamy and tasted great with the fluffy naan. The service was great. The staff brings the food out on carts, which I thought was clever, to prevent any accidents (spilling, bumping into people, etc.). Overall, a wonderful experience with great food.

Website: houseofindiainc.com Review: This place is absotively, posilutely, the cats pajamas! Let me see if I can't just break it down for you: Indian food is awesome. Indian food in America is almost as amazing. There is a common phenomenon where food comes from someplaceville to America and we screw it up. Sometimes, the screw ups are better than the original. For instance: I like our Texmex and fake-Mexican food better than the original. They didn't change it much, they just added cheese, and that's an addition that almost every food could benefit from. Some times it's not so good: American Fish n' Chips is pretty good, but it's got nuffin' on the British stuff. Only problem is that Fish n' Chips and booze are the only things good for human consumption that come out of that place. Chinese food is hit or miss, both here in the 'States and in China... but I only kinda know China, and mostly just Hong Kong, and mostly just breezing through... but I can say what I had over there is not even kinda like what we have in the 'States. It should be a crime that China doesn't have Sweet and Sour Pork. DAMNIT! How do I describe Indian food to those whom have not had it? Think about the location of the country. It's right between China and Europe. It has long been accepted by historians and nutritional anthropologists that Europe got their noodle and rice dished from China. Now, I'm not saying any of this is true, but just think about it for a second. Indian food is like the Chinese Food Association stopped in India on the way to Europe and left some awesome. India took the awesome they left and re-made it with local meats, vegetables, spices, and gooze. Indian food is full of curry (which rocks) and odd tomato things. Lots of sauces, totally unhealthy for you, spicy yet creamy, rice, breads, meats, heart attacks! YAY! BRING IT ON! This place is good with about everything they make, but I really like their Naan (kinda flat bread...) and I'm always up for a Vindaloo. Here's my go-to: -Garlic Naan -Lamb Vindaloo -Double Papadum -sometimes I get a meat Samosa I find most folk like their Masala and Tandori foods. Their good, and this place does a good job, but meh. I like a spicy Vindaloo over anything else. Just like my hero, Dave Lister. If you don't know, don't bother. Herpes: I'll supply if you ask.

LOVE IT. I usually end up at Akbars one shopping center away because I'm flying down too fast to turn into House of India. Anyway - I finally made it to their restaurant - and it was lovely! The food was really awesome and was served in large portions. My sister and split the $35 vegetarian meal for two... Loved the soup, HUGE appetizer, lovely main dishes. Just everything tasted great.

We travel from Annapolis (about two hours round trip) almost every weekend to eat in this super restaurant which has an incredible(including knockout veggie) menu serving authentic Indian food that is healthy, easy on the pocket, beautifully prepared complete with excellent service and huge portions. They take the time to get to know their customers, will tailor food to your dietary needs, and truly surpass all their competitors!!!! Everything on the menu is fabulous and their lunch time buffet is incredible. Their mulligatawny soup is the best outside of India or the UK, Samosas are crisp, plump pieces of heaven, their tandoori delectable, Matter Paneer and the lamb Shahi korma are to die for. For a special treat get the Fish (usually salmon) Tikka Masala and their raisin and nut filled Kashmiri Naan.Hmmmm. Heaven. The tragedy is not having two or three stomachs to eat more...nonetheless we cope by sometimes ordering additional meals to take back with us and eat through the week. House of India is above and beyond exotic Indian cuisine, they're simply the BEST. Open seven days a week in easy to find 9350 F2 Snowden River Parkway, Columbia, MD with carry-out, lunch and full bar. Not to be missed and a national treasure - a little trivia here - their Chef has cooked for White House Occupants....visit HOI to find out which one....! AND Do not confuse this place with Akbar's in the next shopping center which in my humble opinion doesn't even deserve a review......

The food was good and we'll be coming back. The service at House of India was first class. They provide us some complimentary pakoda after we ordered our meal, very tasty. We had mushroom masala & malai kofta. I felt the mushroom dish was a little oily, but the malai kofta was good. The naan & roti were good. The portion sizes were pretty large.

This place serves the best Indian food I have ever had. I make a point of trying an Indian restaurant every place I go when I can, and none of them compare so far. Some places have really good dishes here and there, but everything I have tried here has been superb. I regularly drive from Northern Virginia to get the real deal. Make sure to ask for it "spicy." Go for dinner, you won't be disappointed. If you're looking for something posh, pretty, and pretentious, look elsewhere. If you're looking for the best Indian food around, this is the place.

One of our favorite Indian restaurants in the area, we're almost regulars here for the lunch buffet. There is good variety on the buffet and the waiters bring fresh naan (indian flat bread baked in a tandoori oven) to your table. There are veg and non-veg options on the buffet and the richness and taste of the food is exceptional in our opinion. This from people who have lived and travelled extensively in India and visited almost every Indian restaurant we have a chance to try from Asia to Africa and Europe to Africa. The price is about average for a lunch buffet with a slightly higher price on the weekends. I have to confess we have some favorite curries and we sometimes call to find out what's on the buffet here and at Royal Taj before deciding where to eat.

The food is great and the prices are reasonable. We typically order the Special Combination dinner for 2 Non-Vegetarian and there is enough food to feed almost 4 people. The garlic naan isn't so great, so save your money and just order the reagular naan.

They have a great buffet for the business crowd for a reasonable price, although it can get a little crowded at times. We also regularly order carryout. I am always hesitant about going out for any Indian due to the prices, but the quality and amount the House of India gives you makes it worth it. Don't be shy about asking them to kick up the spice a notch. Overall, a reliable source for good Indian cuisine.

Delicious. Typical Indian manu. Broiled fish is my husband's favorite. Chicken Tikka Masala is great, but if you don't like dark meat, ask for all white meat. Wait staff is terribly charming and always eager to please. I hear they have an awesome lunch buffet.

These people know what service is. From the moment we walked in the door, we were greeted with smiles and warm welcomes as we were escorted to a cozy booth. The service team worked cohesively to make sure water was always filled and that our needs were met. The whiskey was poured heavily and the food was delicious. I highly recommend one of the vegetarian cauliflower appetizer which had a deep red, light, slightly hot, dry batter.

The new management here is killing it! I just tasted THE BEST restaurant yellow dal curry ever, and that is saying something. Those of us who have dal at home don't tend to order it out, but the waiter talked us into trying a side of yellow dal curry with mushrooms and it was exceptional. I would say that House of India is now tops in Columbia.

House of India, you've become my favorite Indian restaurant in the West and East Coasts. I've visited this fine provider of all things delicious several more times now and I am bumping up my rating to a perfect score. The service and food are divine! We're always warmly greeted and recognized, seated wherever we like, and treated to appetizers on the house. The food is consistently delicious. Their malai kofta is so perfect it is all I order, along with onion kulcha. I am always satisfied with my meal. And somehow House of India always seems to top my perfect meal with a complimentary serving of rice pudding. House of India, please come to DC! We need you here, badly.

The House of India is my favorite place to eat as it is by far the best Indian restaurant in Maryland! 5 stars!! My wife and I have been eating at this restaurant for at least a year now. I am from India so I know my food....they have very tasty food and very authentic!! We have been here to try the lunch buffet as well as at dinner time. The quality is superb! The only thing better than their food and ambience is their management team!! The manager is a true gentleman and he always comes to talk to us and we love chatting with him! The service is also fantastic! The serving team always greets you with smile and looks genuinely happy working here. I think this is an indicator of how well the place is run by the manager. Kudos! I'll recommend this to all my Indian and American friends!

Ordered takeout, all veg dishes (palak paneer, malai kofta and veg biriyani). I had to wait a few minutes but was given a complimentary mango lassi (so delicious!!!). The food was packed very well, important to know if you want to avoid a curry accident in the car!The food was fresh and delicious, very well seasoned and perfect amount of spice. the portions are huge, plenty of leftovers. And the curry came with huge container of rice as well.Veg biriyani was good with plenty of veggies.Ill be back!

My husband and I found this place and we absolutely love it. The customer service is on point like a 5 star restaurant owned by a celebrity chef. The servers were all very welcoming and served our food twlling us what each plate were. We got the butter chicken, the chilli chicken, spinach and mushroom, garlic naan, amd regular naan. All really delicious! We will definetely go back when we are in that area. If only we can find an indian restaurant like this in my area, i would be a regular, no doubt. Also, the owner takes so much pride on the food his serves. He asked us if the food was at the right spiciness, if not he would of told the back to make another one. We told him that everything was perfect. Quality control is essential.

Loved it. I told the GPS to go to best indian food and it didn't go wrong. Although it was 12 miles it was worth every bit of the drive. The service from Tapa was extraordinary. From the time I sat down and enjoyed the delicate and slightly sweet mango lassi. For appetizer he suggested the vegetable samosa cooked to perfection. Just crispy enough, no oil, tender and spicy inside. For the entree I had the palak paneer and vegetable korma. Perfect temperature, seasoning, taste, texture all was exquisite. The crispy lentil bread was a surprising treat but that hot out the oven garlic naan was the deal breaker. Tapa did not let me leave without trying the kheer. Simple, sweet, perfect rice pudding. Superb in every way. I'm looking forward to finding my way back there very soon...

Wanted a quick note to eat in between meetings and found this place in small shopping mall. Variety of food and quality was outstanding. It was moist and delicious and many spices on the side to kick up the heat. Would definitely return!

Service here is fantastic! Everyone is welcoming and friendly, especially the owner. The food is to die for. Everything looks and tastes delicious and the staff is always telling me about different items on and off the menu to explore. The atmosphere is very relaxing and all of these qualities combined make for an overall excellent dining experience. I will continue to bring people here for dinner to not only introduce them to Indian food but also to spoil them, as all other Indian food restaurants are inferior to House of India.

Just had dinner with a group of 6 from out of town and we all loved it! I have an excellent Indian restaurant back home for reference and this place is the real deal - authentic Indian food. Service was excellent and the owner was very friendly. They used candles to keep the curry and korma warm after being served. They kept everything generously topped off. The portions were huge. Many of us took a second meal home with even more rice fresh from the kitchen. My only regrets are that 1) I didn't get to try the lunch buffet and 2) I ordered an appetizer and ate all my lamb korma. So good couldn't stop!

I went here in person for the first time (instead of delivery), and the service was AWFUL! Appetizers came out ok (garlic naan never showed up), but it took well over an hour from ordering for the entrees to come out. We pondered ordering pizza to be delivered to us at the restaurant, figuring the pizza would arrive before the kitchen got the food out the door. There was hair in the papadams. We sent a basket of them back because of that. The replacement basket? It had hair baked into that batch too! If you cracked a piece off, the other half would dangle from the hair running through the cracker. On top of that, they had grease puddles. Our server was inattentive, missing for most of the two hours we spent there. Three times we flagged down the water guy to ask about out food and kept being told it'd be out soon. I ended up walking up to the register with the food list because the server never brought the check. Then he had the nerve to ask twice about dessert.

I stopped in on a whim while looking for Indian food while driving between DC and Baltimore. The staff were very pleasant from the moment I walked in. I ordered the vegetable korma, garlic naan & some tea. A few minutes after placing the order I was brought an order of the Pakora appetizer on the house. The presentation of all the food was very nice. The flavors were perfect. Nothing was over spiced or oily. The staff continued to check in from time to time making sure my tea stayed full and that I was enjoying my meal. A very pleasant experience. If I find myself back in the area I'll definitely stop back in!

House of India used to be my favorite Indian restaurant, till another Indian restaurant opened up - close by. Since that restaurant doesn't serve goat on their buffet, I went back to visit an old friend, House of India. It wasn't nearly as crowded, for a weekend and that was fine by me. All my favorites were there, to include the cardamom iced tea. I found my curried goat dish and to my delight, the meat was tender and abundant and the gravy, so good. I also sampled the chicken tikka masala, a creamy concoction with peas, something similar to an aloo gobi, some wonderful red looking chutney and a very fresh salad. The waiter supplied our table with naan. That's a very nice touch. My child loved his strawberry lassi. There are lots of vegetarian options too. With good service, ample variety, tasty and perfectly spiced dishes - I inwardly berated myself for not visiting more often. A creamy strawberry mousse, in addition to the kheer and cheese balls, bathed in a cloyingly sweet syrup, were a wonderful ending to this delicious meal.

I came over for my birthday lunch for buffet with few cousins, sister, and a friend because I wanted Indian and was indeed to explore a new Indian restaurant. I've read past comments about the service here not being great. The service that we had was great. Our drinks kept being filled and fresh naan bread was always provided to us. We even were allowed to take home the bread because so much was given to us. The buffet has goat curry and chicken biriyani. As for the food, compared to other Indian restaurants I been to the food was ok. I mean some other dishes could be more flavorful. However, there was this one chicken dish that was superb. I forgot the name. The vegetable samosas was delicious also. I gave it a 3 1/2 but close to a 4. I did it because of the service they treated us and that one chicken dish that I still can taste from yesterday. Mmmh yum! 5 is provided when service is outstanding and most or all food is seasoned and pleasing to my tastebuds. :) I would still come to this restaurant.

The good was great!! No soup in the buffet. The staff are nice and helpful. The place is small and tight. I love their goat and the bread. Salad are great.

Driving to Columbia from 9-hours away for a family emergency then spending the day at the hospital, I was not dressed to impress. Famished and exhausted I was going to swing through a drive thru for dinner but before doing so ran a Yelp search from my phone to see what was around. I noticed this place and that they offered a Yelp deal. Loving me some Indian food, I clicked the link to their website's menu and took a look at what they had. I found something to my liking and gave the restaurant a call. I asked if they would accept the Yelp deal for takeout and the man on the line said yes. I then placed my order and he gave me a time for pick up. I showed up at the designated time and the food was nearly ready. At the till, ready to pay, the food rang up for more than double the price listed! I questioned this and the man showed me a menu and pointed out what I ordered. I told him that wasn't what I ordered and showed him on my smartphone what I had ordered. He then grabbed my phone out of my hand, went into the kitchen and came back and said "no" - that the menu online is from years ago and they won't honor that price. He became quite snippy with me and I'm sorry but it's not my responsibility to know that your online menu is out of date! I was ready to go and he was upset that they prepared food that I wouldn't pay for. Then he agreed to give it to me for about the price on the website which was fine but as I asked what exactly the items were he continued in a rude fashion to tell me that I would get more than I paid for and not to question. Sorry - but I would like to know what I'm getting. Whatever. I felt like crap and just wanted to get out of there. So I did once the food arrived. I got home and the items were not what I had ordered. Super disappointing. There was a korma that was tasty but otherwise the thali was a let down - probably more because of the experience and less the food itself. I will not go back again.

A little bit on the pricy side but it's worth it. The lamb we had was amazingly soft and the rice was perfect. Everything was super hot (which I like)... the servers were very nice and always came back to refill our drinks with out even asking really. Try the lemonade!!! Addicting.

I'm not rating the dishes but am rating the services. My daughter and I had planned to eat during their buffet hours; therefore, I told her to call and get the buffet hours which she was told is from noon through 2:30 pm. My daughter and I arrived at 2:05 pm. When we entered and prepared to pay for lunch (buffet), we were told that buffet was over, very rudely I might ask. We were also told that they shut down at 2 pm which was quite different than what we were told on the phone. We left and that was that, but I will not return ever to this restaurant. The food may be excellent but I can always find another Indian restaurant that serves dishes that are just as delicious or better. No harm no foul! Enjoy your meal.

One of the best Indian places in Columbia. Wife and I like hitting up their buffet for Sunday brunch. Dinners are also consistent with attentive wait staff.

We asked specifically if the meal we ordered was spicy, and they promised it would be mild. This was a lie. I am now a dragon. Also, the portions are small compared to the price.

We've been to House of India several times and the food is remarkable for its consistency. We have only experienced the buffet once or twice; more commonly we go for dinner. The wait staff is both friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Not a place for the diet conscious or the frugal, but staff is generous with its freebies (e.g., extra rice, dessert, etc.). A fine experience, consistently.

This place used to be good, but not anymore the food doesn't taste as good as used to be. I have heard their chef opening his new restaurant next to them by the name of Chutney, since his gone their food went down hill! I was there today for buffet I was about finishing my food and saw one customer seeming was too drunk had beaten up another customer who was paying for his food very badly that his head was bleeding so much.... right after police came in I paid for my food and left there and never plan to come back! I feel unsafe going there and also will not recommend any family to take their kids here! I have never seen in america that one beat another one in the public! so sad to see this today and this made my day really bad!

If I remember correctly, they charge about $13.95 for the lunch buffet. To me these are more like dinner prices. Still I can't complain about the great selection of food.

Consistently a great experience. We've been coming here (as a family) on a regular basis for years, and the entire experience is consistently top notch. There's pretty much zero turn over in the staff, and all are professionals. Become a regular and they'll greet you onsight and even give the occasional treat on the house :) The food here is just exceptional and the chef is well known amongst local Indian foodies. Always great, truly one of the few great restaurants in Columbia.

Very disappointing. We came to dinner on Valentine's day. Admittedly a bad night and we were prepared to wait for a seat. Once we were seated, however, we were steadfastly ignored by all the waiters, including the one who waited on the table next to ours. A clear case of "not my table". We finally did get a waiter who brought the wrong drinks. After 45 minutes, our food order came out but was accidentally given to the wrong table so the whole order went back to the kitchen. another 45 minutes later the food appeared to arrive but when the waiter dropped sauce on my wife's purse and coat I had had it and prepared to leave. I had tried to complain to the manager but he was too busy attending to the take out orders. When we finally did leave, everybody was shocked which indicates to me that poor service is apparently par for the course here. We never paid for the wrong drinks we received. If the owner wants to collect he is welcome to contact me so I can give him more feedback about his restaurant. Don't wast your time, find another place.

House of India and I are star crossed lovers. I adore the food, but since I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, there's really not much I can safely eat here anymore. This is heartbreaking because this is by far the best Indian food I've ever had. Everything is so wonderfully flavorful, spicy, and delicious. You can't go wrong. My two favorite dishes are the chicken makhani (tandoori chicken marinated in tomato cream sauce) and the palak paneer. They also make a fantastically sweet mango lassi. They are extremely generous with portion size. You will have tasty leftovers the next day. The atmosphere is wonderful. It's so quiet and peaceful and all the waiters are polite and calm. I've always felt like an honored guest here. They seem to truly appreciate your presence. The people who work here are great. Overall, this is easily one of my favorite restaurants. Period. But being a man with a chronic bowel disease, my ability to eat here has been limited. But if you can handle spicy, flavorful, saucy food, definitely go here. You will love it.

Over the last several years, I have been coming here for the weekend lunch buffet a few times a year when I'm in the area. Back in the day, this used to be a pretty hopping place on the weekend. Nowadays, it's not even half full with people now that there are other Indian buffets in the area. As far as the buffet, it's pretty good and they have a good variety. Both meat eaters and vegetarians will be pleased with the selection. It seems like the weekend menu is pretty consistent, but may make some tweaks here and there. The service is good and they are very attentive when it comes to refilling your water or if you want more naan. I'm not a fan of them raising the price of the weekend buffet to roughly 14 dollars when it used to be 10-11.

Solid 3.5 star Indian restaurant in Columbia, MD. Spectacular service! I went with the whole fam on Sunday evening to celebrate my nephew's birthday. We were greeted warmly and seated quickly. For a table of 12+2 kiddos, food (appetizers, entrees, and desserts) were promptly brought out to us! For dinner, there were a round of mango lassis, 2 orders of the vegetarian appetizers for 2 (these are large plates containing pakoras and samosas), chaat papri, palak paneer, daal, vegetable korma, malai kofta, chicken curry, with garlic and regular naan. Food was great - my particular favorites were the vegetable korma and palak paneer. Cooked well with good amount of flavors coming through in each bite. Following this feast we also got a round of desserts - various kulfis and gulab jamuns. I thought the kulfi was a little on the hard side (needed to sit out for a few minutes before devouring), but overall good. We enjoyed our experience at House of India - the service was incredible, and I'm sure we'll be back for more palak paneer!

This place used to be decent, but our trip last night was awful. After waiting 45 minutes for our food, they brought out half of our party's dinner, we ended up waiting another 15 minutes for the rest (I think they forgot). After I complained, an unfelt apology was offered by the manager, but no offer to reduce the bill. Horrible service, mediocre food. I will not be back. If you are looking for good Indian food, try the Royal Taj on McGaw Rd (right around the corner). Much better food with a much better service. If House of India keeps going in this direction, they will be closed very soon.

I really enjoy the lunch buffet here. However, I did not enjoy my recent dinner visit. The Boti Kabab was extremely tough and dry. I then ordered the butter chicken, which was too rich. The mango lassi and palak paneer was good as usual and great customer service!

I am a big fan of Indian food and have to try all the best Indian restaurants in every city I visit. Saying that, I've been coming here for years and haven't really found an Indian restaurant that compares. It isn't easy to make good Indian food. It takes a lot of time and preparation and you can tell this place uses both of these when making their food. Whenever I have friends or family from other cities visit, I always take them here and when they come back in town, they always ask to come back.

According to an Indian friend, this is the only place in the area that serves "authentic" Indian cuisine. I arrived with high expectations and waited in the white leather booths, staring at the crystal chandelier and Christmas lights (why are Indian restaurants so tacky? This one, at least, was nouveau-riche tacky.) The waiter kindly brought water and a basket of papadum and some chutneys for me to munch on while I waited. Once my friend arrived, he brought some vegetable pakora on the house, which were delicious! My fish curry was delicious, except I was disappointed that they used salmon; I think a less oily fish would have absorbed the spice better. Their onion chutney (red) and coriander chutney (green) were perfectly spicy and sour. Lots of rice, and the waiter brought more without our asking. My friend offered me some of the naan I had ordered, but by that time I was already full (curse you, pakora!) and I was ready for a to-go box. Here's where it got a little weird. A woman wheeled a tiered cart over to our table that was stocked with styrofoam containers. Styrofoam makes me cringe, but I really should have anticipated this and brought my own container. Instead I watched as she put each of our curries into two separate containers, then wrapped the naan in foil and put it and the rice in a fifth container. Yikes! When I asked for more of the chutneys, she brought a HUGE container of each, so we ended up with a grocery bag full of Styrofoam. We were actually laughing about it for the rest of the night. I think they need a better system. Overall, it was good food, but pricey (even with the extras) and I didn't see or taste anything radically different from what I can find at any other classic Indian restaurant. I enjoyed the leftovers at two subsequent meals, so I guess divided three ways, the price isn't quite as high.

I went here twice for dinner and each time the service was excellent. The dips that they give you before you order are delicious, especially the tomato based one. I don't remember exactly what I ordered both times but they were all pretty good and the naan was good too. I definitely want to return for lunch buffet.

This is the best Indian food in Maryland and probably on the East coast! I always get the Tandoori mixed grill meal with the soup and the rice pudding. I can never finish it and it is my favorite. I always go there for my birthday and on the weekends for the lunch buffet. You cannot beat the quality for the price. If I could give them more stars I would. Yummm

My family is split between House of India and Royal Taj - both are very good. We hit both up for regularly on Sunday for the lunch buffet. The House of India has very good today, they have excellent chicken tikki masala, tandori chicken and naan. Always a good experience.

Good, but not mouth watering can't wait to come back good. Service was good but the night, other than one large table was relatively quiet, it was Sunday after all. The atmosphere was great, and turns out, there is a large Indian population in the area and one family was having a family reunion with family from the motherland, which made the evening more lively and interesting. Shared the lamb vindaloo, mixed meat tandoori and lamb saag with garlic naan, all were exceptionally good.

House of India is a great place to meet up with friends. We always get a complimentary appetizer, usually samosas. They have a good selection of vegetarian options. I particularly enjoy the Aloo Gobi. There's always enough to take home for lunch the next day. It's a small, cozy restaurant. They do good business, but it's never been crowded when I've gone. Some people have complained about the service. While the staff isn't overly friendly, they aren't rude by far. Service has always been good. I think the prices are pretty standard compared to similar restaurants.

Overall not that bad. We ordered lamb seekh kabob and the chicken tikka masala with garlic naan. Wasn't too impressed with the CTM but the kabobs were mediocre. The staff was very friendly and the experience was great...just wish the chicken dish had more taste and spice to it.

I tried House of India a few years ago and was disappointed. I decided to give them another try tonight, and I'm sorry I did. I ordered chicken tikka masala - a basic dish that any Indian restaurant worth its salt should be able to make well. The chicken was all dark meat and was hard, tough, and dry. Even the fatty chucks (of which there were far too many) were hard. The sauce was way too salty. I am never returning.

I used to eat here often, when I lived closer. It's definitely the best Indian food in Columbia, and prior to the opening of Indigma in Baltimore, I would have claimed it the best in the area. However, I now go time to time with my buddy for the lunch buffet (dinner here is WAY better), and it's nice to see Goat with Bones as an option and the chicken chilli is to die for. Their gulab jamun are the best in the area. The service here is mediocre, but who goes to Indian restaurants for the service? You go for the food. Expect to wait during dinner if you don't have a reservation, and don't expect a waiting room!

I just tried this place for the first time tonight. I ordered a shrimp dish and naan carryout. Both were prepared and packaged well. They were very accommodating making a dish for me that was not on the menu. The flavors were excellent and well balanced with a nice amount of spice. I will definitely order from her again next time I am in town.

A small group of us from the office had lunch here today and the food was great. The lunch buffet was smallish but had a lot of unusual things that you don't often see on the buffet like goat stew. The rice was fresh, the biryani tasty and the tandoori chicken was fabulous. The server brought the nan to the table and kept our glasses filled all through lunch without being obtrusive. The only bad thing was the screaming child in the corner but that wasn't the restaurants fault!! We'll definitely be back, this is one of our favorites nows.

Came here for the dinner for two (non-vegetarian) special (Includes: raitha, rice, naan, soup, 1 vegetable of the day dish, choice of either chicken curry or rogan josh, chicken tikka & sheekh kabob on a sizzling platter, and dessert) and it is a great deal for the service, quantity of food, and quality of food. Instead of choosing either the chicken curry or the rogan josh, the wait service has been accommodating in letting us pick an alternate meat dish (aka: our favorite lamb korma, yay). Also, the dinner service includes a trio of chutneys and crisp Indian wafer-thin/lavash-like crackers. In addition, they also have a dinner for two special that is vegetarian and a tandoori dinner special as well (located towards the end of the menu). The dinner for 2 plus an extra dish is more than plenty for 3 people. We had also ordered the veg. samoas appetizer (came with two pieces) that were piping hot. My sister, SX and I were stuffed to the brim and we had plenty of leftovers for the next day. Definitely one of the best Indian places to eat for dinner for the price, service, and most importantly, taste.

Been coming here for 11 years and brought many friends and family. We have all loved it! The Vindaloo is just the right amount of spicy...blend it with their raita and you have absolute, wonderful yummy goodness! Their Lobster Malai Khasa...my absolute favorite when not in a spicy mood. Their Biryani is excellent...comes with all their Curry dishes. If you are a new comer, please get the Tandoor special dinner...you'll get Tandoor grilled shrimp, lamb sausage and chicken with grilled peppers and onions and! they give you a mild curry sauce on the side. Either way, with our without the sauce, it's an awesome dish. It's huge, really should be served for two people. Oh it comes with Mulligatawny soup! I will say, it's not the biggest restaurant...so if you're planning to try it for the first time, go on a weeknight---like a Wednesday or Thursday. They get super packed on the weekends, so their service does suffer. My husband and I have tried many Indian restaurant, but we keep comparing all of them to House of India.

We love Indian, but have to confess that our ordering is pretty pedestrian. We tend to stick with "red stuff, green stuff, yellow stuff" (mattar paneer, palak paneer, malai kofta). That being said, House of India rarely disappoints. Over the years, I think they've changes chefs a few times. For a while there, it was a bit too salty. But it seems to be totally back on track now. The flavors are distinct where they ought to be, subtle where they ought to be. The veggies are not cooked to mush and things don't swim in oil (although it is very rich, so there's certainly a good bit of butter going on in there somewhere. Not that there's anything wrong with that). Definitely worth a try. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I would preface this review by saying I am Indian and I am confident that I know good Indian food. I believe the food at this place would be found inedible by starving children in Africa. As for the service....the "Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld comes to mind. I went in for a late dinner with some non-Indian friends. Service was poor and food was simply gross. Half of us were sick the next day. At the end of the night, the staff all but pushed us out the door but not before taking our money. Eat here at your own risk.

My favorite Indian restaurant in Columbia. The staff is always friendly and service is always great. The food never disappoints. For appetizers they serve these delicious crispy chips (I drizzle the tamarind sauce on these, and literally crave these chips or whatever they are for months) and we always have the samosas and pakoras. The meals are the best. The tandoori chicken, tikka masala, makhani, kahmiri and vindaloo are tried and true. I particularly love their naan, but my other half loves the roti here. The lassi's here are delicious as well as the desserts. A must try in Columbia. Also, they were very kind and accommodating to our children which is always a plus. I've heard the brunch is a winner here, but haven't ventured over to try it yet.

This is our go-to place for a delicious Indian lunch buffet. The service can sometimes be slow to get the check but the staff is very attentive otherwise. Plates are cleared quickly and water glasses are always full. The only time I was ever dissatisfied with the buffet was one time when we went close to the end of the buffet so the food wasn't replenished as much. But if you get there when it's in full swing, you won't be disappointed.

The food is served hot and with lots of basmati rice, the water keeps coming and the table is set with thin cracker-breads and chutney. The service is not fabulous. We went on a Tuesday evening when the tiny restaurant had plenty of space available, and were waiting a bit. I had the veggie korma, which was delicious over the rice. The focus was clearly on the sauce. I tried the palak paneer as well, and it is creamy and delicious. I like my food spicy, and if I am to go back, I would ask to have the spicy dishes prepared hotter. Personal taste, of course, but important to note if you prefer food more piquant. The naan is okay. Their garlic naan is a little on the overwhelming side, and the plain is nice but not super light, more chewy. You do get a lot of food with an order.

Dear House of India, you may know me as the crazy white woman who stormed out of your restaurant on July 4th. Admitted, it was my misunderstanding of the time my order would be ready that caused my initial frustration, but the following is why I will never return: 1. Really unfriendly service. Cashier barely looks up when I arrive, sullen faced staff, no one ever looks like they want to be there. 2. I've ordered takeout several times and it never fails that you make me wait for my food even when I call ahead and give you ample time before I show up. Doesn't matter the time or day. 3. Booth seats lurch back and forth when someone leans harder from one side. 4. Food is overly oily, not fabulous quality and fairly pricey. Your manager took it upon himself to argue with me about the time my order would be picked up rather than let me acknowledge the misunderstanding and get on with my life. I really don't care to spend my holidays quibbling with people who don't know the meaning of hospitality. I'll take my business to the Royal Taj and advise everyone else do the same.

I frequent House of India more in the colder months. I never had to wait more than two minutes for a table. Service varies, usually they are pretty cordial. Booths could be more comfortable. Bowls seem to be endless. For some reason, the bathroom is always freezing in this place. Personal favorite: Chicken Makhani and Naan. I have only had Chicken Makhani in one other Indian restaurant and it was just decent. Something about this one is addicting though. Mango Lassi is super yum as well.

When I go to Indian Restaurants, its always for the buffets. Yeah I also order the Mango Lassi sometimes. Or the Chai Tea. But usually its just the buffet for me. There are atleast 5 Indian Restaurants in Columbia alone and all of them have their similar and unique qualities. House Of India's food is always fresh unless its nearing the end of the day's session. I really like their meats especially the goat which isnt as easy to make it tender compared to chicken and lamb. Service is never fast here, but luckily im always with someone I can talk to endlessly so waiting a little longer is never bad for me. The food is always great though!

I was so bummed that I couldn't get a rezzie at Rasika for DC restaurant week. I had been feening for Indian for weeks and was looking forward to some. Enter: House of India. I've been here a couple of times and must say that this place rivals Rasika taste wise. Decor side though Rasika has got it. House gets brownie points because they have mango lassi and Rasika doesn't though. For shame Rasika. For shame! The mango lassi is a must, but be careful. It's so rich, creamy, and filling that you may not have room left for your actual meal. This happens to me all the time but, eh, that's what carry out is for. The Vegetable samosas, in my opinion, are better than the meat samosas, and the vegetable assortment (that comes with vegetable somosas) is great if you want to split an appetizer. Naan. Can you have Indian without naan? You shouldn't. The wheat naan is amazing as well as the plain naan, but if you're feeling daring you can try the chicken naan. I am not a fan of the garlic naan or the onion naan. They basically take giant chunks of these vegetables and stuff it into the bread. So you may get a mouth full of garlic or onion. I don't know how you'll feel about that but it was a little unappetizing for me. The lamb dishes are to die for: Lamb Rogan Josh and the lamb Vindaloo. The Vindaloo is a little spicy but if you like spicy / hot food you'll love this. The Rogan Josh has no spice to it whatsoever. I generally don't like Indian or Middle Eastern desserts so I can't help you there but after you've had your lassi, appetizer, naan, and main course; you won't have room for dessert.

Have been here before for dinner and loved it, came back for the lunch buffet. I don't know if I know Indian well enough to know "authentic", but you won't be disappointed. Just a note- don't expect effusive servers- these guys are pretty reserved- another reviewer said "cordial", which is also a fair description. I would like to say nice things about the individual buffet items, but I was too busy nomming to Yelp, so I'll just say try everything, especially the little yellow balls at the end which are basically sugar dipped in sugar. nomnomnom.

Not bad. I went for the lunch buffet and the food isnt bad. Its only $12.00 for all you can eat so you definitly get your moneys worth. The service is great, you dont notice them but they are right there when your water is half empty or when you need a plate cleared. If you want really good Indian food though just go up the street to Royal Taj, the buffet costs the same but the food is a lot better.

Problem: House of India. You see it. It's right outside your office window. You can almost smell the malai kofta through the air vents (Although we both know that's just your new cube mate, Sanjay) Point is, you are hungry and in the mood for authentic Indian cuisine. Problem is you're stuck in a meeting. Solution: Keep slumping down in your chair. Slowly. Then, when nobody can you see you, slide under the conference table. Compose yourself. Now roll out of the door. If you escape unnoticed, great. If the other meeting participants see you roll away, my experience is they won't stop you. Now drive to House of India. No need to look behind you. You're safe now. Parking a problem? The Papa John's 10 minute parking spot is there for a reason. Park and pretend to go in for a pizza. Then throw a tantrum about not ordering mushrooms and walk out and into House of India instead. You're in. Sit and request the dinner menu. Order the Lamb Shahi Korma. It's marinated in a cashew nut based sauced you'll love. Savor and enjoy the Indian fare. Now head back to the office. Don't worry about trailing the scent of Korma back to the cubicle. Sanjay will mask that. Congratulations. You now love India.

We went there on Saturday for my son's 18th Bday. It was his choice. Yeah, he likes a good pizza or burger, but when its time to indulge, he is partial to this place. This was my second time here. Restaurants generally offer one of two things: a great atmosphere but you sacrifice the food, or great food and not so good atmosphere. Well this place strikes a very good medium. I think the food is simply a delight. The atmosphere is OK, but that's no problem at all. The service is professional and that adds to the experience. I had the Tandoori Chicken along with a Taj beer. It was very American (the beer that is), surprisingly. As far as the reviewer who posted on June 24, all I can say is his review is frankly rude, offensive, and out of line. IF I ever had a meal that made me sick, I would be back the next opportunity and let it be known. IF the food there is consistently poor, how do you explain the full house? I put no credence in that review and feel this restaurant has worked hard to produce the product it has. I urge you to try it. I think it is several notches above very good.

I had the Rogan Josh and Garlic Naan pretty good the Naan was doughy Yelp friends tell me should Naan be doughy or no ? Its a Strip center pretty good food I would like to go back just to make sure that it just a bad serving in Naan Service was very good a lot of food.

This is not a big establishment, but they sure make up for size in the quality of the food they serve. Service is fast and responsive. They serve an excellent lunch buffet that is cheap and tasty. I have also ordered large quantities of the lamb and eggplant dish for personal parties. They use copious spices and it makes the food very flavorful. We have native Indian co-workers at my workplace and they have commented that this food is authentic and very well done. We have business luncheons several times a month here as well. The lunch time can be crowded and the lines will stretch out the doors. But the wait is worth it.

House of India is a great place tucked into a strip mall in the suburbs. The food is consistently good, and the portions are large. I highly recommend the chicken tikka masala. The vegetable biryani is also excellent. I don't ever actually eat in the restaurant - though it looks comfortable and inviting. Instead, I get the take out - always ready in 20 minutes.

When I'm working in our Columbia office, this is our default Indian food destination for lunch. The buffet is consistently good, it's fast, and it's close. The staff is friendly, unobtrusive, and quick with the nan. Always a good thing, as I eat the stuff like it's going out of style. All other food is consistently well prepared, flavorful, and portions are as generous as you choose to make them. About the only drawback with the place is that it's small, and the parking lot was designed by M.C. Escher. If you get there between noon and one, it may be hard to get a seat. We have never gone for dinner, but probably should one of these days, given that they have managed to maintain a high-quality buffet for years.

We order take out at least once every two weeks from House of India. It is always consistent and the portions are HUGE so we have leftovers for at least one more meal. There are a few other Indian places in the area that are decent but House of India gets our vote for the best! YUMMY!!! Garlic naan, chicken tika masala, and chicken kashmiri are my favorites!

Having lived in India for the first 23 yrs of my life I can attest that this is the best Indian food (so far) I have had in mid-Atlantic region. Specifically, the pakoras were fresh and the Chicken Tikka Masala was cooked to perfection with a little tinge of ginger. My wife is very white and she too enjoyed her Paneer masala. Although she confessed that she could have ordered one notch of spice level below. The only glitch was that we were 8 of us and the waiter got one of our orders wrong. However, the speed with which they brought the correct order was terrific. The naan (my favorite bread in the world) was also served fresh and hot. One unique thing I noticed in this Indian restaurant that I have never seen before in any other Indian restaurant in the US was that they brought us "pyaaz and nimbu" (onions and lemon) along with our dishes. This is a common practice followed in many good Indian "dhabas" or restaurants in India. Even though my wife and I live about 40 miles south of this place and it takes us almost one hour to get here, we will definitely be coming here again!

Fantastic lunch buffet and can't beat the price either. When I moved from Columbia, MD this was one place I very much missed when I had a hankering for Indian cuisine. I can't say I have a favorite because I love it all but if I had to pick the Saag (spinach with cheese cubes) is fantastic with Naan bread. If your unsure of what you would like, that gives you even more reason to check out the buffet.

I was on my way to Akbar, but ended up here; no complaints. Was in the mood for Indian food & was not disappointed. The Tika Chicken Marsala..... awesome!!!!! It has the right amount of spices, just how I like it. The naan was hot & fresh. The tandoori chicken was smoky & tender. Will definitely come back. I have taken a lot of friends and family there and this has become my favorite informal Indian restaurant.

We went here on a Saturday and had the lunch buffet. First, we were happy that the restaurant was so child friendly. Our daughter is a toddler and the waitstaff was extremely friendly and accommodating to her. The selection on the buffet was great with a variety of vegetarian and meat dishes. They had full size samosas with multiple dipping sauces and also several options for dessert. This was definitely a very well stocked buffet, larger than others that we've seen. The price was $12.95 for the lunch buffet and we think it was well worth it!

Without a doubt, this is one of the best Indian restaurants I've ever eaten at, including in the US, UK and India. I've been twice now, and the food has been extraordinary, as well as generous. The tandoori is cooked perfectly, and there were enough leftovers for me to make two lunches out of it. And the saag paneer is the best I've ever had, anywhere. I'm so glad we discovered House Of India - we'll definitely be back soon.

Very good Indian food for Columbia! The palak paneer and "fish" (salmon) tikka masala are wonderful, as are the fresh samosas and naan. Ever since they opened up a second restaurant, Flavors of India, it seems as though the service has gone down - just not enough people working. If you like chai tea, you must try theirs! It is awesome!! Once in a blue moon it won't be hot enough though, so be sure speak up. If you order one entree per person, you will have leftovers! We usually get enough for 2 lunches per person since we normally get 2 entrees, samosas, and naan for dinner.

I have now been to the House of India twice-once dining in and most recently with ordering carry out, both events in October 2011. Admittingly, I am not a huge Indian cuisine fan, but at the urging of my date, I went and was pleasantly surprised with the dine-in experience. I ordered the Tiki Rasa Marsala (sp) mild/gravied, which is basically curried salmon over basmati rice. IT WAS THE BOMB! They provided pre-meal snackers and the ambiance in the restaurant is nice. Our waitress was actually Latina and I'm glad I know Spanish because she spoke no English nor Indian tongue (my friend mistakenly thought she was Indian) for him to get a different drink. Dining in, the meal portions were hearty and for $17, it should be. Ordering this same dish on carryout, it still tasted good, but the portion size was cut in half and I wouldn't say it was TOTALLY not worth the same money, but I'd suggest only ordering carryout from here with a coupon (try the Clipper). I had like a 4 oz piece of salmon cut in 3 pieces with carryout and in-restaurant, it was probably a 7-9 oz piece cut of salmon, but I had about 8 fat chunks of salmon. All in all, it is a good restaurant with great food. It is also a Zagat-rated restaurant, so the caliber is nice. Definitely a nice date spot for those men trying to impress.....2 steps above Red Lobster :-)

This is my favorite Indian in the Columbia area. The food is well spiced and consistently delicious. They have great deals with Dinners for 2 that could easily feed 4. It includes soup, appetizer, 2-3 entrees, and dessert. I believe they are in the low $30 range. They even pack your leftovers (you'll have leftovers) efficiently for you. Also a great place for takeout! Some of my favorite dishes: Lentil Soup Vegetable Korma Palak Paneer Baingan Bharta Chicken Tikka Masala Lamb Shahi Korma I'm not a fan of Indian Buffets, but the one here is acceptable (still not a fan).

The lunch buffet is amazing - white meat chicken in the tikka masala and an awesome assortment of tastes to try. I love the biryani as well - especially the mix with chicken, lamb and shrimp... fantastic!! The service is great, the decor is nice and the food is absolutely fabulous.

My fiancé's family is FROM India, and we shamefully admit to sometimes enjoying the food from House of India *more* than their home cooking. SAVORY is a really good word to describe it. Even generally "bland" dishes (ie dishes that aren't supposed to be spicy) have a real richness to them that is really rare in commercial Indian cuisine. I'm in love with their Palak Paneer, and I'm pretty sure they freshly-make their paneer in-house. Their portions are big, and good for sharing. Their takeaway food is equally good. I've never had a bad dish there, and it's such a pleasant surprise considering what a dumpy little strip mall they're located in!

My wife and I usually go to Akbar, but decided on a whim to try this place for brunch one Sunday. We also returned for "date night" during a Friday night recently. The four stars are for the brunch. The buffet was, by far, one of the better buffets of Indian food I've ever experienced. That comes from someone who loves the buffet at the Mango Grove - a 4.5 star place all around. It also comes from someone who is almost ALWAYS turned off by anything with buffet in its description. Everything on THIS buffet was incredible! If I could rate the Friday night, non-buffet experience, it would be 3 stars at best. The atmosphere was excellent; the staff was friendly and eager to please; and the staples were as good as anywhere. When asked for spicy, I got the usual toned down version, and I really hate that. The chicken in my Chicken Masala was dry, however, the Palak Paneer was as good as I could have expected anywhere. My wife had the grilled whole fish with a bowl of Masala sauce on the side. If you like fish that "smells" and "tastes" like fish, then this would be for you. It did not get devoured as did all other dishes on the table-even with the sauce to mask the fishy taste and odor. As I said, the staples were good: tandoori breads and exceptionally tasty condiments to accompany them. They also offered up free appetizers which was nice while we waited for our main dishes. All in all, it was above average, but not great. I will, however, try again as it was a very busy Friday night and I think they deserve the benefit if the doubt.

Very average indian food. Very westernized and no way near the actual indian food taste. Indians will never appreciate the food taste which is very bland. I will recommend "Flavours of India" in columbia and "Paradise Briyani Pointe" in Catonsvill md

I took my first foray into Indian food when I was in college. Back then, I was a brash, naive, newbie foodie wannabe. Not much has changed since then... well I did graduate college.. House of India is the best Indian buffet hands down in Howard County. On a side note, I have never had non-buffet Indian Food. Am I missing out on something? I mean, I love Indian food so much, I figured it would be a shame to not be able to eat multiple heaping platefuls of it in one sitting... Half the time, I'm not too sure what I am stuffing into my mouth but thats ok, it all tastes great! My favorites are the chicken tika marsala(is that right???), the spinach, and the lamb. I usually pile those things around my heaping pile of rice in the middle of my plate. The nan is very good. I wish it were buttered a bit though but maybe that's my Western consumer glutton mentality poking it's evil head. I should eat more vegetables... The service is very good. Water gets refilled appropriately. Never ending nan is refilled in an instant. There must be a nan-station in the kitchen because these thigns come out piping hot every time! Make sure you leave room for the rice pudding. I love me some rice pudding. Good texture: not too gluey not too runny. Right amount of cinnamon. Awesome... You can also do take-out. They give you a Styrofoam container (minus-1 star for being environmentally unfriendly.. sike. But seriously wish restaurants would use less Styrofoam...) which you can fill with as much food as it will hold. If you aren't careful, you can end up taking way more than you can eat. Can you say, "Free Indian Food in the break room..)

My Indian boss says this Indian restaurant is the best in Maryland, thus we drove from Annapolis (about two hours round trip) for their famous and authentic Hyderabad Chicken Briyani. I have to agree, the briyani was awesome! Very home style, not greasy, it was layered, and definite worth the trip! The best briyani I had in America, so far! Beats San Jose and Artesia restaurants, hands down! We also ordered the Tandoori appetizer platter and it was also well seasoned and tender, nothing burnt. I also had the Rockfish Angaar and it was fresh and simple... perfect. Overall I found this restaurant to be more authentic and definitely less greasy than other Indian restaurants. The naans were great too! Good service and good decor. On that evening we also meet one of the owners and he was extremely friendly. I think this restaurant will be very successful.

My low rating for House of India is for our recent experience in the restaurant. We have been going to House of India since 2004 and we have always had great experience, good food and awesome staff. It is pricey but we used to get freebies from apps to dessert. We went to House of India to celebrate my birthday in Feb. 4th. My friend made reservations since we know it's going to be packed especially on a Saturday and all hell broke loose when we got there. We got there a little before our reserved time and the line was already out the door. My friend went to the front and asked for our table. She saw on the way in that there's a reserved table for 8 and asked the front guy (manager?) if that was for us and he said yes. She asked if we can go ahead and get seated and he said, yes. We all went inside and seated ourselves. They only had 2 waitstaff and 2 runners for a very busy Saturday. After 15 mins of not getting any acknowledgement, we have to corner one of them and ask for the menu. They gave us the menus, took our drink orders and brought us 1 basket of the crispy crepe with the sauces to share for 8 hungry people. Again we waited for another 20 minutes for them to get our orders. And what irks us was the person who took our orders was the same guy who walks around filling water on the other tables and cleaning tables--- wtf, we thought he was a runner and all these time he could have taken our orders than walking past our table all the time and we even asked him to another basket of the cripy crepe and he didnt gave us any. We waited for about another 30 minutes before our food started coming out. We were so hungry that we are soo close of walking out and going to Pho Dat Than! Their saving grace was their food, as always, was good. Unfortunately, since we were hungry, we just inhaled our food - not enjoying the experience or the food and finished our meal in less than 20 minutes! We were so disappointed with the service that House of India provided us and we didn't even get a simple apology. We understand that they were busy, with the shortage of staff, but a simple apology acknowledging the fact would go a very long way. You are in a service industry so CUSTOMER SERVICE is a must! I would have given them one star as their service that night really did leave a sour taste in our mouths but because they still gave us good food, thus for one additional star.

I only went to House of India on the strength of personal reviews from quite a few Columbia, MD, locals. I did not try this restaurant, because I'd glimpsed its majestic facade during one of many drives down Snowden River Pkwy, because, honestly, with its placement as one of many seemingly nondescript businesses side-by-side in a strip mall, I would have never noticed it. And, yet, what a treat I would have missed out on, had I not taken the plunge this weekend. I walked inside, and immediately the bustling sounds of the road nearby subsided. The staff was friendly and immediately took our orders. I had the Rogan Josh, and my friend Liz had Kashmiri Chicken. Both of these dishes were excellent. As a fan of Indian food, I highly recommend this establishment. I will definitely return to fulfill my next Indian cuisine craving.

The food was really good! I had the Malai Kofta and my friend had the Aloo Gobhi. Both dishes were really good and filling. The only problem I had was the service. They need some more wait staff.

I've frequented House of India several times, and don't have negative remarks ... nor do I have positive ones that make my experience there stand out. It's a local Indian restaurant that fixes my "once-in-a-blue-moon" craving for Indian food. I've had better and I've had worse.

Food was OK. But service was really bad. Servers were not very happy to see us, though it was only 930PM. Our waiter poured poured more drinks on the table, then in the glass. At 1030PM, they shut off the music and some of the lights. Arrogant employees. Food was OK. It is fine for average American, but if you have some knowledge or taste buds for Indian food, this is not the one for you.

I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala with Naan and it was delicious! A bit pricey though, that's why I give it 4 stars. Would definitely recommend though...I'll just have to go on pay weeks :).

dirty, i'm talking flies, & water glasses w/ lipstick stains. unacceptable. it was buffet when we ate--which we usually avoid--but we have had excellent Indian buffet before: yelp.com/biz/india-house… the /food/ was lukewarm-to-cold. the cost of the buffet is conveniently obscured from the outside window. this place has got good ratings from a lot of yelpers and thats why we gave it a chance, but our experience was miles apart.

Had the meal for 2, large portions, enough for 3. Casual dining. Not very spicy/hot. I can't rave about the place but in a pinch it curbs the cravings.

House of India is one my favorite restaurants in Howard County. It is classic Columbia because it sits in a strip mall that is non-descript even for the suburbs -- barely a blink as you drive past on Snowden River. But the doors open into a classy restaurant. Table cloths. Red-lined flatware. Warm stylish paint colors. White banquets. They're all really nice, and none of them can compare with the food. First, they start you off with papadum, the crisp crackers that you can break into pieces and enjoy with three chutneys. After crunching an entire bowl, we started with bhel puri, a plate of rice puffs and crispy noodles tossed with tomato, cilantro and a tamarind sauce. It had the complexity of a great Thai salad -- crunchy, mixtures of sweet and sour, then a spicy flavor that came on at the end. The appetizer was also the size of a dinner plate. We barely ate half. One appetizer could have easily filled us both if we had spooned it all up. Thank heavens we stopped because our entrees were Top 10 dishes as well. Chicken Kashmiri -- a chicken curry in a creamy sauce that tasted of nuts and sweetness, and Fish Angaar -- a whole rockfish cooked in the tandoor oven, served beautifully with charred skin and a delicious sauce laced with ginger. The fish was a tour de force. The flesh was moist and flavorful, and I used tongs to lift the fillet off the bones and then to pick off the delicious meat up near the head. This all came with a naan and a platter (not a mere bowl) of rice. I don't know what was in these dishes. They were not spicy like hot peppers. Instead, they were cooked with spices. Real skill in that kitchen gave everything the complex flavor that makes Indian food so exciting. In the end, this beats out Akbar's and stands with Mango Grove, which has that south Indian menu that House of India doesn't even try.

Delicious Indian cuisine in the Columbia area. For those who do not patronize the Columbia area often, I want to note that the area has a nice diversity of people and ethnic culture (like, food!). On that note, House of India offers genuine Indian flair and taste. The last time my fiance and I ate at HoI, we ordered the Special Combination Dinner for Two (NON-VEGETARIAN) and IMO, it could've fed four people. The dinner special offered soup for two, an order of Chicken Tikka, Sheek Kabab, vegetable of the day and a choice of Rogan Josh or Chicken Curry for under $35! (We opted for the Chicken Curry). Spice tolerance was made to order (and we like hot!). The combo also came with basmati rice and dessert. I forgot the name of the soup but I do remember that it was some sort of green vegetable soup that had the textured of creamy bisque - I thought it was rather bland and uninteresting. However, the curries (btw, curry in Indian means sauce) were fragrant and creamy - i.e. delicious! After scrafing in as much food as our stomach could hold, the food still looked like it had barely been touched and it was time for dessert. The dessert was Kheer, a type of rice pudding with nuts; maybe, I was full or in a food coma, but I did not find the Kheer very tasty and the aftertaste was not pleasant. (My fiance and I left the rice pudding.) Despite the soup and dessert, where both were house selections, we thoroughly enjoyed the entrees. Also, I've been to the lunch buffet and that too, is phenomenal.

I never ever thought I'd utter these words, but I think I'm all chicken tikka masala-ed out. If I were to get a blood test done, I'd have elevated amounts of creamy, tomato-based sauce. Food - the wife and I visited House of India last week and enjoyed a veritable Indian feast ( yelp.com/biz_photos/zo14… ), all for about $40 including tax and tip. As the server brought out dish after dish, and even spooned our rice onto our plates for us, I imagined this is how a cow would feel in India. We ordered our go-to dish: chicken tikka masala ($13.95), which was good but wasn't as zesty as we'd like. We also ordered a tandoori special dinner ($19.95), which included tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, sheek kabob, malai kabob, and tandoori prawn. This was a massive portion, and my wife and I could've easily shared this dish. Most everything was good, but the prawn was overcooked and felt like eating a piece of tail-on rubber. The dinner was served with mulligatawny soup, a veggie broth with lentils, which was very good, naan, and a sauce, which was very similar to the chicken tikka masala sauce. What we didn't realize was that the two orders tasted incredibly similar and we were definitely tikka masala-ed out afterwards. Three things bothered me about the food here. First, ginger belongs in Korean food and on Gilligan's Island, not on Indian food. They put quite a bit of freshly cut ginger slices on there and I've never gotten used to ginger on Indian food. Second, they use white meat chicken. Some may actually prefer this, but I much prefer dark meat, which is one of the reasons I don't get chicken McNuggets at McD's anymore. The other reason is b/c they don't have the 20 pc for $2.99 sale. Anywho, if you're like me and don't like ginger on your Indian food, make sure you ask for no ginger, and if you prefer dark meat, I'm guessing they could substitute it for you. Third, the flavors were rather dull and tasted like mass-produced buffet dishes. Oddly enough, despite gorging on chicken tikka masala, I craved Indian food the next day, and ended up at India Gate's lunch buffet. The buffet was still $7.95 and the chicken tikka masala and tandoori chicken there was much better than the one at India House. And now, I can't even imagine eating more tikka masala, which will probably change later this week. Note: House of India also has a lunch buffet ($9.95) Location - If you're coming from 32-Broken Land Pkwy, you have to make a U-turn and it's in the first shopping center on your right. The interior is spacious and dimly lit. Delivery is available via carryoutmenu. There's a $4.99 fee with a $20 min, they recommend a tip of $15, and the prices listed take into consideration a 3.5% discount for cash. Sound confusing? Get your butt in your car and pick it up yourself. Money saving tip: Enter 2658 inside promo box at Check-out screen for $4 off. Service - courteous and efficient staff. The ladies fill your water expertly and when we asked for a box, the guy brought out a rolling doggy bag maker and wrapped everything very nicely for us, even putting the leftover sauce in its own container. Good Indian food in Columbia, but I still give the nod to India Gate in Laurel as my favorite Indian restaurant in the area.

I have eaten a lot of Indian food from a lot of places. Some of it very good, some of it merely ok, but I have never been truly disappointed by an Indian dining experience despite sampling many Indian restaurants in the Chicago and Washington, DC area over the last 20 years. For instance, I have had decent Indian food at both Tandor Grill and Royal Taj in the Columbia, MD area over the last several months. House of India was the first time I have had truly BAD Indian food. We had carryout from House of India tonight and ordered three different curries. Nothing fancy, we had the Chicken Makhani, Malai Kofta, and the Achari Gohst. Not one was edible. The first two are old favorites that I have eaten good and mediocre versions of over and over. House of India's versions did not even resemble any of the Chicken Makhani's or the Malai Kofta's I have ever had. The Makhani was very overly sweet, almost cloying and the bits of chicken were full of gristle. The Malai Kofta was bland and the texture was all wrong. The Achari Gohst, which was new to me, was very oily, with the oil separated from the rest of the dish, and otherwise a sort of mush of indistinct flavors. Even the naan was bad. My wife went to bed with a bellyache and I am left scratching my head. I am no expert by any means, but I am confident that I could at least recognize what a properly prepared version of these dishes tasted like. House of India is literally the very first Indian restaurant I've ever tried where the food is simply wrong, not prepared at all correctly, and essentially not the dishes they are claiming to be. I would strongly suggest trying one of your many other options in this area.

I've been eating here for years... I have told hundreds about it... but now it's kinda busy all the time. They need to expand ... If you are thinking of going here to eat... stop! Don't!!!! please... I can't stand it because it's been so full. Ok, couples out there... My wife and I get the dinner for two vegetarian and eat as a couple. My daughters both take boyfriends here as they've been going here with us for about 11 years now. I have lunch meetings here and I've been a loyal fan and consumer for a long time. But really... try some other place cause it seems idiots like me keep bragging about how good it is... and tomorrow I'm taking everyone there for the Sunday brunch and to the Harry Potter movie up the street ... from Pasadena, MD! ... hopefully it won't be crowded...

Went to this place after being recommended by my friend. I find Akbar in downtown Baltimore better than this place. The food here was OK..nothing great. Ambience wise, its slightly better than Akbar...becomes kinda noisy when there is too much crowd.

Food is better than average, probably one of the best Indian food restaurants in the area. However, the restaurant is not well organized when it is very busy. When we last tried to go on a Saturday night, it was busier than usual. That is when the problems were obvious. There was no systematic way for them to keep a waiting list; the one and only waiter for the floor was trying frantically to keep a list. Patrons entering the door had to spend 5-10 minutes to figure out who was keeping the list. They should have had the cashier / take out manager do that. They lost our order. The table seated at the same time we were seated were served and packed before our food arrived. The patrons seated behind our table, who were seated 30min after we were seated were served food 10min before we got our food. No one gave us a menu; we had to get one ourselves. We had to flag down the waiter to place our order after waiting 20min. Then we waited and waited for our floor. None of the staff ever came to our table to let us know that something was wrong. After waiting 45min and seeing what was happening, we asked the waiter, who did not offer an explanation that we could understand in his broken english. We then approached the manager, who also could not either offer an explanation nor an apology. So we had to leave after waiting an hour.

This is one of our favorite restaurants and it is frequently the spot we go to for our anniversary, birthdays, etc. The location in a strip mall might indicate a dive, but it is actually a nice place. We usually get the wonderful dishes Malai Kofta and Palak Paneer. The flavors are complex and the portions are large. My wife and kids love the Mango Lassis. Before the last few visits, we would have awarded this 5 stars. However, the service needs improvement. It used to be charming how numerous people would team up to wait on you, but lately, this has led to long gaps when no one would bring refills, the check, etc.

I personally prefer the Indian food at Kitchen of India in Towson, but House of India is great. They have a nice buffet, fair prices, with many selections not offered at some other Indian restaurants such as Chili Chicken and Chicken Dhaba. The food is much spicier than at other Indian restaurants I've been to, but like I said, still good. Well-decorated dining area, full bar, courteous waitstaff.

On a whim, decided to have Indian food and there was House of India. Ordered the Chicken Biryani, Vegetable Samosa, and Rasmali....all yummy. The chicken in the Biryani dish was very tender white meat. The kind I get when cooking with coconut oil, but this was not cooked in coconut oil. The vegetable samosa was very good and so was the rasmali dessert. The food came with a yogurt sauce that was delicious and a couple of side sauces (red & green). Recommend and plan on going back for more...:)

We all decided that Indian sounded really good for lunch today at work. Did little searching online. Found the nearest place. Called to see if they delivered and found out they didn't. They do, however, use carryoutmenu.com and we looked into it. After finding out that on top of $5 delivery charge, we were required to give 15% gratuity to the driver. So I decided to pick the food up myself. So I get there, of course the food is not ready. Asked for plates and got some. Asked for forks and there were none. When asked what are we suppose to eat the food with, the guy goes, "well, Indian food goes well with eating by hands." Hmmm, I think this is last time I fork over $70 at this place. See ya! Make sure you ask them to label the container. Two vegetarians got chicken by mistake b/c underneath all the sauce (drenched in oil) they all look the same.

Met some friends for dinner here and the place was packed. You know the food is going to be good, when you go to an ethnic restaurant and the restaurant is full of people from that ethnicity. We had the Channa Masala, Palak Paneer and Chicken Makhani, and 3 nans, and it came with a plate full of rice. Everyone was in agreement that the food was delicious. In the middle of our dinner someone said "at the count of 3 point to the dish you like most," and everyone pointed to a different dish, meaning there's something for everyone. The total $60 and we had a some to take home. I would go back, one of my favorite indian restaurants in the Columbia, MD area. The Chicken Makhani is a must! My only gripe, the waiters were a bit to eager to help, so much so it was getting annoying and the Chai is not good!

I was very excited to try House of India after seeing all of the positive reviews. We had meat samosas (ok), bhindi masala (good but there was more onion than okra), and chicken tikka masala (which was so oversalted the only thing you could taste was salt). I don't expect to go back to House of India again.

I am an indian food connoisseur since I am indian and do eat out a lot. I'm also a vegetarian. This is probably the best Indian restaurant in Columbia. The chef is award winning and his food is very flavorful. Flavor is the thing that sets this place apart from other, the food has that perfect flavoring. Lunch buffet is awesome and lots of choices. The only problem is variety of selection, it is the same food everyday. I wish they would change things and add something new. Dinner is great, a la carte, and can be made to your taste. My favs: Papdi Chaat Samosa Saag Paneer Paneer Masala Malai Kofta

We've dined-in, as well as take-out and delivery here. The service is great and the vegetarian dishes are very good. If you request it, they will cater to your spice-level. We prefer dining-in, but we've never had issues with take-out. We've only had delivery once - it usually takes about an hour - but the delivery charges are quite expensive from carryoutmenu.com .

For a place that I've heard is popular for lunch hour, and supposedly has a pretty good lunch buffet, I was surprised when I ate here recently. Some of the dishes were cold, including the chicken tikka marsala, which is, unfortunately for House of India, my favorite. The tandoori chicken was good, but nothing special. Also, the gulab jamun tray for dessert had not been replaced the whole time I was there ( I like dessert at the start). The waiters were nice, replaced my water promptly when the glass was half-full (I'm a glass half-full kind of guy). The worst part about this experience, was the next day when I realized I must've ate something wrong, not cooked, or worse. I was hugging the toilet all day. No more House of India for me!

So my previous review was all yah you're great n stuff, but as the great Axl Rose sang " I used to love her, but I had to kill her" Ok, here's my beef WTF are you guys thinking? are you trying to pee off your ever loving regular customers, where's the meat? Where's the flavour? Where's the quality? Has it all disappeared like a fart in the wind? I'm so angry I could eat McDonald's, see what you've done???? So last night Dy and i ordered Ali Gobi, gabi? (I don't know how to spell it, I'm a dedicated meatatarian) for herself and chili chicken por me, yummy, yum, yum, had it once or twice, enough to leave a good impression, here's what I got (don't think I mentioned we had it delivered) The vegetarian food was nice (looking good so far yes), chicken pakora was extra yum, rice, up to spec, garlic nan? check up to par, chili chicken what the hell is this, crap driver left already, check ticket, ok chili chicken, ok once again, wtf is this? never ever, ever have I seen such a poorly put together dish, wait that's not true, check out my review for truffles catering, anyway chili chicken, deep fried chicken sauce, veggies, yadda, yadda, yadda, what did Mike get? Hmm, lets see bits of chicken, very very small amounts of chicken with big chunky bits of flour on them , supposed to be the coating huh? hah!description should read "unidentifiable pieces o meat with lumpy halve cooked pieces of flour in a goopy flavour les sauce with oodles of veggies. Dude, really (can't believe I just said dude) if you can't care about your delivery food does this mean you've stopped caring about your regular food? Why should I go back to once one of my favourite places on earth, when you served me crap, the last two times I've had food delivered (yes, I know how different delivered food can be from restaurant served, I am Chef after all, ooohhh bully for me!) good lord, I paid for this? What a joke Will I come back? Doubtful, you guys have broken my heart, it's not like good Indian restaurants are a dime a dozen is it? One again, you guys have left me so angry I'm probably gonna eat a chain somewhere, lord save me! You were getting one star, but I'll give ya one more cos' of the rice.

Ate there last weekend. I can see the effects of the increasing food prices. The korma was 75% HUGE chunks of potato. I hate chunks of potatoes, in fact, I don't believe I've ever had korma that even contained potatoes. Nope. Will have to eat elsewhere.
