This place is ok. The couple times I've been, they have 2 other tables. I've never seen it busy. Service is great but food is just ok. My favorite place gives you an appetizer, soup and a dessert. I only come since a friend of mine likes coming here.

Great local place for sushi and udon. The staff is very friendly and polite and will customize sushi rolls to your tastes. They also offer creative seasonal specials. Last summer they had a jalapeno strawberry roll that was outstanding. The tako(octopus) salad is a favorite of ours. We forgot to get it this time because it's not on the menu. I love me some ginger salad dressing, even if the house salad is plain iceberg lettuce with cucumber. It could be nicer, but I also knew upon ordering it what I was getting. Tonight I wanted something hot, so even though they're not typically known for their noodles, I went with the vegetable udon. Next time I'll be more adventurous and try the seafood. Their Thai menu was alluring too. Anyway. Noodles. Nice udon texture, fresh veggies and a hearty miso. I was hoping for some mushroom though. Will ask next time. Fiancee got the unagi don, a box with a generous fillet of eel on top of rice. It looked great, and he said it was delicious. Considering the price of unagi sashimi/rolls, this was a lot of eel for the price, though it did seem a little lacking as a meal in of itself. I'd suggest a soup or salad or vegetable based side to go with it for it to feel like a meal. Overall, this is a great place if you're looking to avoid the crowded chains, and if you get to know the staff, maybe design your own roll flavor combinations. I'm looking forward to my next noodle craving for sure.

Service was great, sushi was alright. Nothing stellar, nothing egregious. I think there are better quality places out there for better prices and certainly in the Columbia area.

Attentive staff without being overbearing. Delicious food. Good lunch deals. Creative plating on more than one occasion.

Great place. I should start by saying that the staff is very nice and accommodating. I came there late before they were about to close and they gladly offered me to sit down and eat without rushing. Sushi was very good, 8 pieces per order, and good fish quality. Good prices. Jalapeño roll was delicious. Will definitely come back there again.

This place is ok. The sushi is ok nothing stellar at all...but the service is great which makes up for a multitude of sins...it's terribly expensive for the quality but ok for columbia.

This is consistently the best sushi I can find in the Baltimore/Columbia area(yes better than Sushi Sono or Sushi King!). The fish is always fresh, the rolls are interesting and delicious, and the service is attentive and very kind. I have been eating at Hanamura for 13 years and have not had a bad or even mediocre meal yet. I highly recommend trying the special rolls like the Grasshopper, Pink Lady, Dancing Tuna and the Rock n' Roll.

This place was quiet and the service was good. Price is about the same as everyone else in Columbia, but the rice was old and the sashimi wasn't the best flavor. I would say it's average at best.

I used to work close by and frequented there for lunch, the staff was always super friendly and I enjoyed their Philadelphia roll and fried ice cream. I would definitely recommend this place over The Noodles Corner!

What makes Hanamura stand out is the people. They know us, are super nice every time, and even when my mother in law left her coat, the next time we came in, they told us and had kept it off to the side for us. They customize the sushi rolls for what I want, and I love the kinoko yaki. I highly recommend the sake don as well. My only complaint would be that if you order it to go, they do not include miso soup, and it costs the same. So I just stopped ordering things to go and wait until I have the time to eat there. I'd say they're missing out on some business from us because of that, but other than that, they're great. It's got way less of the snooty vibe of some of the other sushi places in town.

I have been going to Hanamura for years. The service is great, the staff is friendly, and the food is fantastic! I have yet to eat something there I didn't like. My favorites are the Kinoko Miso, Shumai, and Philadelphia Rolls. There is also a maki roll involving crab meat and Old Bay, I believe it is called the Lake Side roll. Being a sushi lover from the Baltimore area, it doesn't get any better than that.

We used to frequent Hanamura between 2004-2008 while we were locals and absolutely loved the service, along with the great sushi. They always were attentive and made you feel welcomed. This past week, we were back in the area and went there for dinner. Same great service, same great sushi. The roll selection is not the widest but what they do offer, they make well. Overall a very positive experience, which seems to have continued over the years!

Our favorite go-to place for dinner. Full disclosure - I do not like raw sushi and have not tried it here. I do love the other options they offer. My kids usually opt for a bento box with a little bit of everything and I order some of the cooked options off the sushi menu. We have always been satisfied with our meals. I particularly love the Lakeside roll- crab, shrimp and little old bay. The servers are all very friendly and remember you each time even asking about our kids if they aren't with us. Love that it is local place and not a chain.

Sushi is great! Very fresh! This is the best sushi I've tried in the Baltimore area. It's a small, quaint restaurant, and the staff are very nice. They always remember us when we come in. Highly recommend!

Great service! Nice cafe type atmosphere. Very good sushi, authentic menu choices. Nice people friendly too. Good prices, good value for the money! And they accept all credit cards.

Surprisingly good. I've had them twice, once for sushi once for noodles (yaki udon). Both were quite good! I use them for takeout on my way home from work, and they have food ready when they say they will, and fast! I definitely plan to continue eating here. I think overall Nichi Bei Kai has better sushi, but as they don't always do carry out, this is a good fast-food Japanese restaurant. I'm looking forward to trying additional dishes here and trying more than basic maki and nigiri sushi!

As a sushi addict, I give Hanamura the award of best sushi place I've ever eaten at. Lucky for me, it's close to home! Every time I got to Hanamura, the staff greet me and make sure I have everything I need. The rolls are delicious and the seafood is always fresh. The prices are average for a good sushi restaurant and the atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming. Hanamura is the best sushi place in Howard County, hands down!

Love the bento boxes here for lunchtime! Delicious and a fair price

Great place for sushi. (Not like these crapy places that use cucumber to make there rolls bigger.) they actually tell you what's in every roll. Very friendly love this place!!!!

Great sushi but you should try the Yaki Soba as well!! Their teriyaki bento box is also great. However meal sizes are relatively small so it does get a bit pricey... but it's worth it! Staff is very friendly.

This place provides one outstanding item - Double-Decker Lobster Roll. It's a lobster roll with both lobster and sauce on top. Haven't found anything like it elsewhere. But it's $15 a roll, so start saving for it now!! But must confess that I'm less than impressed with many other items. Found the Terriyaki tuna, salmon, and chicken dishes to be dried out. Sushi is good, but not outstanding. Nonetheless, this is a convenient standby for local sushi. And there is also a nice local coffee shop a couple of doors away.

I'm a huge fan of the Baltimore Roll at this place. And that's probably why I rated them so high. As far as their Japanese style food? I find it to be a bit bland, and for the price of it, it should be VERY well seasoned. And the sushi, well the raw stuff I've ordered, just didn't impress me. It didn't give me that "fresh from the sea" taste that I was looking for. Instead it was a little mushy.

My wife and and I love Sushi King and Sushi Sono, but we stepped out to Hanamura after people recommended it again and again. We stepped in with trepidation because sushi disappoints if the fish or the price seem off, and the sparse, small restaurant off Dobbin Road doesn't look that different from places that have let us down. Then, the fish started to arrive. Spicy shrimp roll picked by my aunt, spicy scallop by my mother, salmon skin by my wife, and on and on . . . . We filled a table with sushi for four on a budget just larger than dinner for two at Sushi King. We had a wonderful meal that started with edamame (ask if they'll salt the beans more) and ran through mochi ice cream for dessert. Everything was delicious, and everything was different enough that we each had favorites. The Atlantic Roll's mackerel, ginger and scallions was my "new find," but the least of the rolls for my aunt. We all left satisfied, and Hanamura gets my family's ultimate prize -- my mother says the spicy scallops matched Niwano Hana, her gold standard in Rockville. For me, the innovation at Hanamura is serving imaginative flavors even in $6 or $8 dishes. They have $16 rolls that echo the Sushi Ks', but I saw more small dishes that looked intriguing. For $8, we took a risk on tuna tartare, and the bowl of tuna, avocado and cucumber echoed the poke that we loved in Hawaii. For $3, we tried the pickled radishes. They weren't great, but they weren't pricey. Next time, I'll try the salmon and squid in the "tiger eye" appetizer or the salmon soup that someone else recommended. You aren't sacrificing quality at Hanamura. You are just getting choice and a great change of pace -- tasty fish in a budget meal (for sushi!) or tasty fish in an opulent banquet. It just depends on what you want to try.

I love that there is mushroom miso. Most of the food is good quality, though every once in a while the beef doesn't taste too fresh. Not spoiled, just has that frozen flavor. Of the japanese restaurants in the area, it's ok, but there are others I like better.

Ended up here because other places we'd preferred to visit were closed on Sunday. Nice server, but very mediocre food and they charge extra for items that are ordinarily given at no charge elsewhere. Brought appetizer w entrees and did not return to refill sodas. No good reason to return here.

Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're not. First time I went, their sushi was really good and so was their yakisoba. The second time I went, I was served raw sushi that was very warm....warmer than room temperature....and the yaki soba was mainly noodles, oil, salt and cabbage....my sister got a stomach ache. Third time was the same as the second time. Warm sushi and other mediocre entrees. I was really disappointed after having a great first experience. Service the first time was great, but slow because they were so busy. Service the second time was just ok. Nothing special. I don't plan on coming back.

This place has pretty bland food that requires alot of doctoring. We had to use soy sauce or hot powder on almost all of the dishes that we tried. We liked the soup on the first go around, but inreality, it was just average. The same can be said of the noodle dishes, and fried rice.

I don't get the "cult of Sushi King" at all. The one time we ate there, our meal was average, the service was indifferent, and the bill was high. Give me Hanamura any day. There is no better roll around than the Spicy Kevin Roll, a tempura fried spicy tuna roll. The gyoza are crisp and light. The yaki dishes are full of noodley goodness. And the staff is friendly and attentive. I know that sushi in Maryland isn't up to the standards of the sushi snobs from other cities but really. Can we stop cr@pping all over a perfectly good restaurants? We get it, you are cooler than we are.

I come here once a week. Mind you, I am a vegetarian so I am very happy with Hanamura. The staff are seriously so great. They recognize us as regulars and are super nice. I get the same thing every time I come here: vegetable spring rolls, some sushi, and maybe even the pan-fried vegetable udon noodles. The noodles are really simple but really tasty. My favorite sushi rolls are the avocado, the tempura sweet potato and the combo roll that has tofu/asparagus/cream cheese. Order these things and you can't go wrong! My dad is a meat eater. He eats the above with the addition of a seafood soup. He likes it a lot.

I love this place! The Philadelphia roll is best i ever had. I also LOVE their Bento boxes. They are friendly, quick service and always remember me and what my preferences are. Great little sushi place for a nice dinner or lunch!

My husband and I really enjoyed this local restaurant! We ordered a variety of appetizers for dinner, including edamame, yakatori, crab dumplings, veggie egg rolls, etc. The husband highly approved all meat served on a stick and in a dumpling. But as a vegetarian, I was extremely impressed with the vegetarian sushi options. I have never seen these sort of options at Sushi Sono or Sushi King, not sure why. I tried the cucumber and avocado rolls, but the sweet potato tempura roll was the highlight by far. Crunchy and meaty tasting, I could have eaten those rolls forever. Their miso soup is the perfect accompaniment. But just as notable as the piping hot, tasty food? Our service was IMPECCABLE. Our waitress was attentive, quick, and sincerely friendly. We did not have to ask for anything- our drinks (including my husband's sake cup) were refilled immediately, and the empty plates cleared away within seconds. As I believe excellent service truly makes a meal special, I would return to Hanamura any day. A great local joint for Japanese cuisine.

Cute little sushi place with good prices and great sushi. This is my go-to sushi restaurant near my house, eat here all the time! Staff is very friendly and attentive, too.

The one notable at Hanamura is not the sushi but the fried ice cream: tempura-battered, deep fried so that the scoop of ice cream melts perfectly. Why is this artery-clogging treat so hard to find anywhere? More importantly, how can I get fried ice cream flambe'ed (a critical element missing in Hanamura's version)--the last time of which I experienced some twenty-plus years ago at the old China Garden restaurant when it was still located on the top floor of a high rise in Rosslyn? As a child I stared in wide-eyed wonder at the fried ice cream prepared tableside, liqueur lit aflame then doused with chocolate syrup, which I'm sure violated multiple fire codes and necessitated the special training of wait staff. Now if I ever happen upon that fiery version of ice cream tempura again, I just may end up having a heart attack. Oh, and I agree with Twinkie: Forget the sushi...unless you're vegetarian. They have an inordinate number of vegetarian maki--go figure.

They delivery via carryout menu.com and was the only reason why I choose to order from Hanamura. It was bland and over priced. I should have stuck with Sushi King or Sushi Sono.

I don't know what experience the other person had, but I had a pretty good time. The food was fresh, the service was lightning fast, and the selection was good. I am a huge fan of salmon, avocado, asparagus, and shrimp tempura all of which they had for a very fair price. The sushi may not be mind blowingly good, but it certainly wasn't bad. Go here if you need a sushi fix, but not necessarily if you're trying to impress someone with your love for sushi.

not visiting Columbia often I didn't know about Sushi King....just happened to stumble across this one and I thought it was a great find. the bento box was good, almost great. I like variety in my food and sushi/sashimi never fills me and i feel bad going out for sushi and getting chicken, but the bento box had 3 choice items..so i chose chix teriyaki, tofu, and salmon rolls, pretty cool. only could be better if the third choice was sashimi. you know, now that i think about it the scallop sushi i had tasted kinda fishy, maybe it's not fresh like twinkie says? hmmm, i will have to return and try again...service was great, prompt.

Bad food, very expensive and the "sushi chef" was eating WHILE preparing food. When I complained, I got a half-hearted apology and a real dirty look from the chef. Good thing I had my food already. Don't bother ever eating at this place.

  • Twinkie B.

Quick and simple: Expensive and not fresh. These are the two most obvious things that are to be avoided when going out for sushi. The selection isn't very bad, but what's that matter when you're not going to enjoy anything that you order? Why not just go across the street to Sushi King? You'll thank them for being so close.

I've eaten here at least half a dozen times, and I'll continue to. Like all Japanese places, it's overpriced, but the atmosphere is very laid-back. I have never seen more than 3 other tables occupied when I come in (although there are only maybe 8-10 tables there). The waitstaff are attentive enough and the sushi is okay (not great). Their desserts aren't bad either, and their portions are somewhat generous (I rarely finish their entrees if I get any sushi beforehand). Their green tea is 3/5, good for dinner but not super-duper. I like to go here either by myself to have peace& quiet, or with another friend to have an actual quiet conversation. I'm not a big fan of their parking lot as it can be a bit of a squeeze to get my pickup in&out, but if you go before dark it's fine.
