I would mostly agree with the other reviewer (Justin P). The pretense is not so much in the food itself, but in the pricing. That is, I think it's over-priced. Two "pretty good" crab cakes for $29.00 struck me as basic tourist gouging. However, a lot of the higher end restaurants in the area have the same price tags to main dishes. I enjoyed the crab cakes I ordered, for what it's worth. They were succulent, but slightly bland. For the price I expected a bit more of a taste sensation. I've had better crab cakes, believe it or not, in Pittsburgh, PA! The raw oysters were thin. As I rolled them around in my mouth I wondered if they were malnourished. Have had much better oysters... I have no problem spending lots of money on food, but when the food doesn't rise to the sticker, then I'm disappointed. Most men were wearing jackets, or nice sweaters. Women were in anything from slacks to dresses.

Urrr.... too precious by a long shot. If you are looking for pretentious, overpriced offerings and indifferent service to boot, then you have found your place to eat in Chestertown. I honestly can't believe that I am the first person to review this place on Yelp... I wonder what that says? That Yelpers don't go here, or that nobody Yelps on the Eastern Shore? I'm not sure, but at any rate, check out the menu in the window before you venture in.

As Yelper Justin P. writes, this place is simply too precious for me. If the food was really remarkable I'd overlook the snooty atmosphere and cutely smiling 'debutante' style hostess/waitress. But I've had better food at roadside seafood shacks: The tomato/vegetable-base crab soup was saltier than ocean water with amatuerish spicing/seasoning, and my sauteed chicken livers tasted like army fare. My wife's oyster fritter was humongous and creamy but unimpressive. The bread/sides were nothing to cheer about...the lemonade, though, was excellent and our bourbon chocolate cake was rich and satisfying. The final 'nail in the coffin' for me was, upon detecting my wife's foreign accent, they pre-assumed that we'd stiff them on the tip and added an 18% gratuity to our romantic lunch tab. A big no-no in my book: I don't think so! Gratuities, while expected in our culture, are still a voluntary show of appreciation for the service provided. If I think service is average or nothing special, I tip 15% or even less if a server really sucks, is mean, etc. But if service is fine/pleasant (as it was here at the Blue Heron), I tip 20% on up! Restauranteurs: Don't add tips to the tab, it just plain sucks. Unless I suppose it's a "table of ten or more" group and it simply makes things easier/simpler for all involved. My Eastern Shore search (for this Bronxite) continues!

I hate to do this. This is the first bad review I have posted but we did not have a positive experience here. The food was over and undercooked, awful all around (for us) and it was expensive. I'll focus on what I ordered - the jambalaya. The shrimp were overcooked and stringy, the scallops were overcooked and rubbery, the rice was undercooked and hard and there was so much cayenne pepper in the dish that it was inedible. I did not finish it - could not touch it. I didn't want to pay for it but I have family there so I didn't want to make a scene. I did tell the waitress that the dish was awful. I saw her speak with the owner but he had no interest in coming to the table. He was sitting on a stool by the door greeting people. Nice guy. My girlfriend and my uncle were both very disappointed with their dishes as well. The attitude was unapologetic and pretentious. We will never go back. The owner has a lot of explaining to do. UPDATE 06/08/2011: We were in town over the weekend and invited to have dinner there on our friend and we refused to go.

Simple ambiance, tasty dishes and price acceptable.

I noticed the bad reviews for this place but they are a couple of years old so I guess it changed. I went twice before reviewing in case the first time was an abberition . The staff was very friendly My husband and I shared the oyster fritter as an appetizer at the waitress' suggestion. It is wonderful. Very unique presentation for oysters. We both had soft shell crabs and they were very meaty and cooked to perfection. We didn't sample any desserts. I believe this restaurant is well worth trying.

We're traveling from the DC area and staying at the Brampton. We arrived at the restaurant at 8pm on a Tuesday evening. When we walked inside we noticed that at least five tables were occupied by customers. We were greeted by the manager or owner who informed us that they weren't serving anymore that evening and that everyone there had finished their meals and were on their desserts. My wife asked what time they closed and he responded with "we don't really have a closing time but as you can see... dessert, dessert, dessert." While he may have had good intentions, we found his response to be rude, especially with tables of customers staring at us. We politely thanked him and we left. I highly recommend that this restaurant add their closing time to their website. We specifically checked the restaurant's website before driving there and it only mentioned that they began serving dinner at 5:00pm. This way you don't waste people's time and you save people the embarrassment of attempting to dine at your restaurant after 8:00pm.

We have dined regularly with our family at The Blue Heron Cafe for many years. It's always an enjoyable experience. Paul, the owner, takes great pride in providing fine cuisine combined with friendly, professional service in a warm atmosphere. Apps, entrees and desserts are all excellent, and there is also a fine wine list. The coconut cake is our favorite dessert, but you should call ahead to request it. We'll be there again this weekend.

Very good food, lots of specials on a Friday night. Decent wine list with a healthy pour by the glass. Highly recommend the surf (crabcake) and turf (two options).

I think the 3-star rating that others have given is about right. This is a cute place with a good menu. I had a salmon dish on a bed of spinach. My wife and I shared a plate of shrimp cooked in a sinful garlic butter sauce. My wife has a scallops appetizer for her main course. The salmon, which I asked to be cooked medium-rare, was overcooked and void of juices. The scallops were a disappointment, especially compared to others we had the night before. The shrimp were wonderful. The menu is a joy to look at. I would not complain too much about this except for the fact that it is an expensive place. Entrees run around $25. For that, I expect something to really zing. The ambience is romantic, cozy. Nice wine list. Service was attentive and professional. Main gripe is that the quality of the cooking is not in sync with the pricing.

I think this place is a nice outing while in town. We all enjoyed our meals. Though we made reservations for our Friday night - we didn't need them as there were plenty of empty tables available. As others have stated, it's a bit pricey for what you get, but it was good food and we had an enjoyable evening.

I went recently to the Blue Heron while visiting family in Chestertown. There were eight in our party. We were celebrating a cousin's birthday and were seated near the rear of the restaurant which was perfect. Acoustics were good. Blue Heron has a lovely atmosphere; casual elegance. Some gentlemen guests I noticed wore jackets and others were in neat jeans. As some reviews say this restaurant as pretentious in price. I disagree. Granted, prices are not inexpensive but I expect to pay more when choosing a more upscale dining venue for a special occasion. I think at Blue Heron we got what we paid for; a great variety of meticulously prepared and presented specials and main menu items. Among the eight of us we ordered the Sea Bass special with Port Wine reduction, the Trout special and the Surf and Turf special, also Crab Cakes (wonderful!) Each Entre came with a side of two vegetables. Servings were more than ample and very nicely plated. We also ordered several of the delicious desserts. The wine menu offered many decent wines which in my opinion were very reasonably priced. The reason I didn't give 5 stars was that my Sea Bass was very slightly over cooked but this certainly would not discourage me from happily returning to Blue Heron Cafe when next in Chestertown.

Our party of 5 had an excellent meal and excellent experience here. In my quick check-in from Saturday I made a Simpsons related joke about "Lobster stuffed with Tacos" because we had just ordered the Shrimp stuffed with Crab appetizer. Although it was a little funny, it was unfair since the apps were so good (also had stuffed mushrooms and a salad). I had the trout special and thought that I won the dinner competition. We all shared bites and the crab cake may be the best I've ever had, and everything else was outstanding as well. Still, nothing could touch the trout dish! The atmosphere was very nice; a quiet dining room and an attentive but not overbearing staff. The price was good too. The total was $260 for 5 people, including 5 appetizers, 5 main courses, a couple of deserts, a couple of coffees, and 2 bottles of wine.

Pretentious is not even the beginning for describing the Blue Heron Café. We had spent all day moving our son into the local college and it was getting late. To be fair, we were not dressed to the nines, but were casual in shorts since we were working all day. Our son got up to the door and looked at the menu - and quickly turned around! Lamb chops for $38! Unfortunately, my husband was close behind. The proprietor told my husband that they stopped serving, but if we came in right now, he'd still serve us. We should have said, "no thanks." In short, the staff was snooty, ignored our table and if the gal serving smiled, I'm sure her face would crack. Her first words were, "what do you want", not "what may I get you to drink, or how are you tonight?" Our bill (no tip) came to $224.34 - no appetizers or deserts, the most inexpensive bottle of wine offered and 4 plates (3 lamb). They should expect this review. I left a note about needing better customer service and smiling faces on the receipt. We visited the Fish Whistle the night prior and loved it! And half the price... ;O)

A solid 3 pushing 4. Seems the reviews are hot and cold but we were nicely surprised. The proprietor is hands on and we were addressed by name and warmly greeted. Blue Heron has a style of hospitality that is now hard to find. The famed oyster fritter was great, and the lemon burre blanc was a great foil, though even more could be enjoyed if supplied. I am not sure it's a fritter technically, it's rather a heavy pancake or a johnny cake. It's a great shared appetizer or entree though way too much for a single appetizer, so I found. We also tried the chicken pot pie which was very nice and uniquely seasoned with cumin and tarragon. The jambalaya was a unique interpretation with habanero peppers and rice along side the stew. Would have loved a more combined traditional presentation with the habanero. If we lived in Chestertown, I think we would frequent often. Love seeing big food in little towns! Thanks .

My wife and I had dinner on 9/2/11. We almost passed because of the other poor Yelp postings. I am glad we did not. It was not perfect. Service was slightly amateurish, but I am being picky. Nice people, nice lighting, and overall good atmosphere. Its laid back, not "happending". However the food was great. Had oysters with crabmeat appetizer. Very good. Wife had pork tenderloin, I had pesto with shrimp and scallops. Both were outstanding. Well seasoned, nice introduction of fat and flavor. Bottom line, really good food and relaxing.

Came in for a menu and it's decorated very lovely. The owner smiled from afar, looks like a Dustin Hoffman lookalike. Came over very quickly and provided a menu for me to peruse.

Had the oysters on half shell, jambalaya, and blackberry homemade ice cream, everything is really delicious!

We found the food here to be very good and it was priced accordingly. The crabcakes were delicious and the seafood encroute as well. The oysters Chesapeake were great with a super mornay type sauce. We were pleased with the service and the overall experience. I wondered if we were in the same restaurant as some of the previous reviewers.

I went here with a group of 6 other people for dinner. This place was practically empty besides for 2 other tables. Looking through the menu, it was distressing how limited the options were. I ordered the jambalaya and when it arrived it looked delicious. My opinion soon changed after my first bite. Now, I love spicy foods-- the spicier, the better, but this dish was inedible! The cayenne (and whatever else) was so strong that I was debating whether to take another bite. The shrimps were tiny and the scallops were small & rubbery. The rice was very thick and had a congealed texture. This dish was not good at all. The food is definitely overpriced, I will not be returning.
