After being overcharged for a bottle of Scotch by the guy with the small liquor store not far from Rip's, the last time I was in town, I went looking for another place. This is how I found Rip's. From the outside, it doesn't look all that inviting - kinda shacky-ish. I visited the liquor store, which was fantastic with great prices, and I found that they have a deli. a bar, and a restaurant. Out comes the phone and up comes the Yelp. Oh? Decent reviews, cool! We returned for dinner during our stay. We started with the calamari. It was fried well and not chewy at all. I was not impressed with the sauce which was like a ponzu sauce. The wife ordered the broiled stuffed shrimp which is four jumbo shrimp stuffed with our imperial backfin crab and baked. Oh my! They were delicious! I ordered the seafood platter which is a combination of shrimp, scallops, fish and crab cake, which comes fried or broiled, with a lemon thyme beurre blanc. I chose fried, because vacation. Everything was delicious and plentiful. The shrimp were monstrous! Both of us had enough leftovers that we fed my buddy who arrived late! We stopped in on the weekend for sandwiches from the deli (and to pick up some more wine). We had the Cuban, the French Dip, and a salad. The sandwiches, while smallish, were delicious as was the salad. We were not disappointed. They did neglect to put the jus for dipping the dip in the bag though. We stopped in on Sunday morning of our returning drive home for brunch. This was pretty standard fare. An omelet station, scrambled eggs, french toast, pancakes, hand-carved roast beef and ham, pasta, wings, bacon, sausage links, among other items. The mimosas are included in the price as well. The omelet dude makes a decent omelet. I had one with shrooms, ham, tomato, and onions. Excellent! While the brunch isn't five star, all in our party were full and satisfied. That meal lasted the wife and I all day! What was really perplexing were the amount of people buying liquor at 10 AM on Sunday!

An always available favorite of mine. Sitting off of US-50, this restaurant is clutch. The bar has pretty good happy hour deals and food specials. The sliders and burgers are really good. Cooked how you want. The chicken wings are meaty and well-seasoned. The crab balls are delicious. They also make a good steak. The cornbread that precedes each meal sets a strong tone for the meal. The bar has a great selection of bourbons. They make a good old fashioned. At any time, you can visit and get a table quickly. Glad many people don't go here. Haven't been disappointed yet. Hope it continues.

We've eaten here many times because it's nearby, and I've been meaning to write a review for quite a long time but felt badly doing so since it's a local place that isn't a chain. However, it's time. The restaurant is a mix between a truck stop and a decent local restaurant. My husband recently had the fried chicken entree and it was quarter pieces, which seemed odd and the breading was odd and it was barely seasoned. Years ago I had the fried chicken and the coating was different--it looked like and was crunchy like fried chicken coating should be so not sure what has happened since (but it wasn't seasoned and was much better as leftovers that I salted a tiny bit at home). The bar food is all fried and the bar menu limited, which is probably why they can't get people in there for happy hour. Most things are priced $2 to $3 over where they should be for the quality and location. We generally eat in the bar so it may be that the bar food isn't great. We used to sit in the restaurant and had a more favorable opinion back then. The best thing is the corn bread and the macaroni and cheese. Every 4 months or so my husband forgets why we don't go there any more, and we try it again so maybe next time we'll try the dishes that everyone seems to think are good.

Came here for breakfast with my family. The staff are really nice! The place is huge! Great for groups! The bad side, the wood panels along the walls smell really bad. Maybe it was just the day we went but .. avoid the walls if you can. The food was basic and not delicious. If you're lazy to make breakfast then come here. It's not expensive but also not worth the money. Nothing special, go at your own risk. His review was mostly based on the quality of food which is not good.

Very nice spot for brunch. Traditional american choices and a nice quiet atmosphere. You also get a complimentary mimosa with brunch.

Holy Crab! I wanted to go swimming in the Cream of Crab soup I had!!! So delicious and because it is so thick it stays pipping hot so please use caution! For anyone traveling is you're in the neighborhood it's worth the stop. This soup was so good we had some more for dinner. I also had the Spinach and Blackened Salmon salad. Very good as well. The dressing was like a balsamic, horse-radish concoction that was perfectly married together. Now I am totally guessing what is in the dressing so if you go and ask the chef and I am totally wrong don't judge me. You can't possibly blame a girl for trying. Plus you may put a small dent in my food bubble, because I like to think I know a thing or two. Anyways, go get some Cream of Crab Soup for me and whatever else you may fancy and ENJOY!!!

Brought a colleague in for lunch and ordered the broiled jumbo lump crab cake which came out instead as a backfin sandwich. The bread was not very fresh and fell apart when I tried to eat it. The crab, despite this issue, was quite good and I ditched the bread. Came with bacon-cooked green beans which were a bit mushy and premade slaw. Service saved this from 2 stars.

I've been going to Rips for twenty or more years and the place has gone down hill in the last year or so. The waiters / waitresses get your orders wrong, the quality of some of the food has become poor and the place has become "a hang-out" for some rude and anti-social customers. All this makes for a poor dining experience. This is a family restaurant so you can expect crying and noisy infants and toddlers, but that is par of the course. It is just that lately it has become more frequent. The take-out is probably okay if you know what you want and have some assurance it will be well done. For example, the Maryland fried chicken is excellent. However, avoid having sit-down meals in the dining room. It is not worth the aggravation.

Decent food. Looks like a old country inn. The liquor store next to this is great. I would recommend both

My magnificent Aunt and her wonderful husband have lived near here for 20+ years. For all of those 20 plus years I have driven by this establishment twice on each visit... I wasn't even sure what it was the first few years. I thought maybe a campground entrance or something (hard to decide at 50mph) Finally went in with them after the Saturday Christmas Gospel Show at The Evangel Cathedral (wow that place is even bigger inside...a little troubling really-but that's for another more philosophical discussion about mega-churches and the close personal relationship with God conundrum of modern mega-store religion). It's a place for good American staple dishes in big quantities on big plates- served in the "replica?" of a horse barn. It's a little claustrophobic for a larger guy like me. I kept feeling like I was going to bump into something or hit my head. If you get past that feeling, the ambience is nice; in a hemmed-in, BDSM sort of heavy wood, with wall anchors for suspension play, horse collars and leather whips sort of way. Do go here though, the food is good. The atmosphere- "interesting" to explore at least mentally.

Wow! What a Surprise Great Home Cooking! Crab Bisque Excellent, Meatloaf awesome. Chef Salad was good but nothing exceptional to write about it. Best Part the wine list and wine store attached - similar pricing on the menu and in the store : ) Wanted to go for Sunday Brunch but have yet to make it maybe next sunday. Very clean Good Bar

Tried the fried chicken. Not worth the price. I thought the chicken would be juicy and flavorful. Not the case, it was dry, under seasoned and I added some salt to try and give it flavor. The 2 stars was for the mac n cheese. That was good.

I look for six things when I go to a restaurant: quality of the food, its presentation, how good is the service, atmosphere/comfort, value, and cleanliness of the entire establishment (usually not in that order). So, when I go somewhere that consistently delivers good on all of these, they get the coveted five stars. Rip's is one of those places. If Rip's was Health Care, they'd be the humble country doctor that made house calls, had great bed-side manners, and could cure virtually any ailment. But they're a restaurant, and they do their business just as well. The greeter at the front is almost always very pleasant and personable. Wait staff are usually very good and knowledgable, and it's quite common that the manager comes around and asks how everything is. Good old fashion service, which has been lost in many "eating joints" these days. Now the food part: great selection to choose from- the menu tends to be Traditional American, which includes salads, soups, large plates, sides, and desserts. I've never had a bad meal here, but I will emphasize some of their signature items: crab soup, chili, ribs, meatloaf, most of the steaks, crab cakes, homemade cole slaw and mash potatoes, and their desserts. Their food supplier(s) is very good; I'd wager it's not Sysco. They advertise that everything is made fron scratch, and I believe it. The atmosphere/comfort is good to very-good. It has an equestrian theme, which is reflective of this region of Maryland, and depending on where you sit it can be quite cozy. The place, including the bathrooms, is always clean. Rip's has been around for about 60 years, owned and operated locally, and is a wonderful place to go for a great meal with large portions, fair prices, and friendly service. Next time you're around the Bowie area, stop on in and exerience this great restaurant!

On a late night drive to Baltimore, the BF and I got hungry and decided we weren't in the mood for Chick-fil-A. I suggested Rips over Chili's and Ruby Tuesday (I used to work not far from here) which are both across the road. We walked in at 9:15 at night and were promptly seated even though the place closes at 10pm. It's a small place with cozy little booths and low lighting. It is mainly a steak and seafood place with a lot of local Maryland fare, but I remember seeing burgers, sandwiches, and salads on the menu. I'm sure there is a kids menu but we didn't need one. This doesn't seem like my type of place to bring kids. I got the Chesapeake tilapia-breaded and pan seared and covered with crab and a cream sauce. Came with rice and a divine house salad. OMG. It was all to die for. They give you corn bread instead of "regular", which is different. I'm not a giant fan of corn bread but it was good. The steak was divine too. I was deciding between the fish and the "crabby mac" which looked soooo god but I couldn't eat 2 entrees-I can never finish one. I didn't grab dessert here either so I can't comment on it, but the food is delicious at a quaint little place which is kind of a hidden gem. The waitstaff was super helpful and did a great job too-the manager seated us. If I'm ever back in the area-I'll go back.

The service & brunch selection was one of the absolute worst in my personal opinion...Never again will I bring my family here. Our server was not attentive to our drink or really any of our needs. Their food (to me) was just slapped together...then after waiting more than 10 minutes for our check they tried to charge us adult price for a child...again...Never again!

Had been wanting to go here for a while now and finally got the chance to go after a shopping trip at nearby Bowie Town Centre. We arrived around 6pm on a Saturday and there was about a 15 minute wait for a table so we sat at a high-top table in the bar area. Our server was pretty friendly and the staff was very responsive when we complained that the air conditioning was too cold. Now onto the food. We started with the calamari appetizer, which was tasty but a little greasy. Shortly after, they brought us complimentary cornbread. It was warm and had a great texture but needed a little more salt and sugar. For entrees, I ordered the fried catfish and cheese grits with braised kale and my husband had some kind of chicken breast dish topped with cheese and crab. The fish and grits were in desperate need of seasoning. I just find it unforgivable to have cheese grits on your menu but neglect to add enough salt or cheese. My husband's chicken dish, on the other hand, was good and well seasoned. But it was very rich. I had one bite and could taste all the butter. But it was good. We were stuffed so I can't comment on dessert. I would probably go again but definitely order something different from the menu. Just seems like they need to not be so afraid to actually season their food.

I was looking for a breakfast place off the beaten path in the Bowie area and had driven past Rips before so I thought I would take the chance and go in.. From the outside it looked very "old country" with barn doors and wooden benches. Once we went in we were greeted with a smiling face that was able to seat us right away. The waitress was friendly and knowledgable of the menu which is always a plus in my mind! The menu was standard breakfast fare and some things I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, like scrapple, but the other people at the table seemed to love it.. My French Toast and eggs were perfect! I'm sure I will return just to get another helping of French toast!

We had dinner at Rip's this past Saturday. I have dined here often for dinner and their weekend brunch. I have always received great service. The food is good. I ordered the shrimp and scallops in a champagne cream sauce with a yellow rice. The shrimp and scallops were large in size and cooked just right. It was a rich and tasty dish. I also ordered the small crab balls as an appetizer and they were tasty as well. For dessert, I ordered the raisin bread pudding with a rum sauce topped with whipped cream. It was okay. This is a nice place to patron as a couple or family. Side Note: on the other side of the restaurant is the liquor store that has a deli and they sale really good sandwiches. My favorite is the Cuban .

Went for breakfast and was not expecting much, judging from the outside, but I was surprised! The service was on point, the food was good, and best part the bill was reasonable. The only draw would be the mimosa could have been stronger (but that is more of a personal preference)

Went to Rips on Wednesday and ordered the Steak Chesapeake medium well. The crab imperial was delicious but the steak was cooked past well, dry, and no flavor or seasoning. Also the price for a 6 ounce tough steak was a little pricey.

Like grandmas cooking, comfort foods and traditional items not really found anymore except maybe at diners. You can tell it's where the original local residents go to during the week. Go when you have time as it's slower paced like what I imagine how back in the day much like the way it is inside just untouched by time. Like the food, great liquor and beer store next door too, just picture an authentic Cracker Barrel before it got corporatized.

We were told by some friends to try this place out, so we finally put it to the food test this weekend along with some family visiting. First, food review: steaks-good and cooked to the correct temp, salmons-very tasty and fall apart flakey (both people loved it and would order it again), chicken piccata-so delicious and the chicken was juicy. The side salads were amazingly fresh, and I loved my broccoli side. Second, the atmosphere: this place was packed at 5pm in a Saturday and we were shocked to see so many diners that early. It reminded us of a Cracker Barrel almost. Overall: food--amazing, atmosphere--not fancy but comfy, service--pretty good but a little behind (food came out quickly, but the salads were just being eaten, not the end of the world of course), price--pricey but the food quality matched the price. 4 people (salmon, chicken, ribeye, and a tilapia-crab combo), plus soup, with alcoholic drinks came out to $110. Definitely will be going back for a nice, relaxed dinner. Recommend! :)

What a wonderful evening! It was my father-in-law's 80th birthday and Rip's is central to the family, so we thought we'd give it a shot. Even though they don't take reservations, since it was a milestone birthday and a large group they agreed, which we thought was quite nice. When we all arrived, they said that they thought the main dining room would be too loud for us, so they had opened up a small, private dining room for our group (how nice!). The owner seated us and gave us a long wine list that had prices equal to their liquor store which is connected to the restaurant - they don't even charge a corking fee. We got a wonderful Pinot Grigio for $13.99! By this time we were beyond impressed. The only thing that topped all this off was the great food. The oysters were to die for and a couple of us got the seafood platter which was terrific and could feed a small village. I had purchased a special Smith Island Cake and brought it in, and before I said a thing, our wonderful waitress had brought a cake cutter, lighter for the candles, and plates and forks for us. It just was great beyond belief and we'll certainly be talking it up to everyone and going back ourselves. Kudos to Rip's for taking special care of us and making Dad's birthday a fabulous one.

I have lived in the area for a while now, so I've always passed by Rips. The first time there, I was greeted by a nice hostess and a very attentive and knowledgeable waitress. I recommend the chopped steak. It was really great. That mushroom gravy on top makes it absolutely delectable and there's enough meat to take home! Also there's a really tasty breadpudding too! Definitely will be back again.

Very, very solid 4/5. Ah hell....edit....5/5. Looking for a neighborhood restaurant that hasn't been updated in 30 years but has great service, very fair prices, multiple menu offerings that sound tempting and above expectation meeting food? Go here. I came from out of town, a coworker brought me here for lunch. Looked like your typical burger/sandwich type joint I thought. Looked at the menu...immediately noticed the Mac Man sandwich. Ok. Seriously. ORDER THE MAC MAN SANDWICH. Pickles, pulled pork and mac&cheese on texas toast. It was too tempting to not order. I'm so very glad I did. It was fantastic. Bonus. The homemade potato chips they have are really, really good. Service was great. Private parking lot. Get the Mac Man sandwich.

Tried Rips again this past Sunday. Nothing is fresh here. Most of the food is cooked too long. Avoid all fish dishes, although the crab items are okay. Brunch is a bust. It must be the last restaurant in North America that serves powdered eggs. Some of the waitstaff are terrific. Just attentive enough without being pushy.

Nothing fancy. Been in Bowie forever. Always seems to have a crowd because they serve the kind of foods that everyone likes.

  • Shawn A.

Over priced, ribs were warm at best. Crab dip was over cooked and bland. If the prices were average wouldn't be completely opposed to coming back but I don't see the point when any chain restaurant can serve better food for less than half the price.

What's not to like about good country style food....Listen, any place that still serves scrapple is alright with me!......It reminds me of when I was a kid. Didn't have much so scapple is all we could afford. Go grab a good breakfast

Stooped in for breakfast. the eggs Benedict was awesome. My wife enjoyed her French toast and my sons loved their pancakes and Mac and cheese. I tried all their food too and I too liked the Mac and cheese. If you're tired of fast food and want a good hohome cooked meal you can't go wrong here.

Leaving the south after a successful wedding weekend was originally supposed to add up to a stop at a Waffle House to finally see what all of the fuss is about. But somehow we managed to pick the one highway destination that didn't lead to any (Le' FAIL!). But fortunately Rip's Country Inn added up to being a better consolation prize than most as it still managed to provide a heaping pile of grits and southern hospitality. The boat cabin themed booths at first looked to be an uncomfortable mess, but proved to be nice and roomy. And the warm & inviting service and reasonable beer list (Big glass of Fat Tire FTW!) made for an instant plus. While the menu did come across as being a little too pricey, they did have the portions of southern cooked goodness to match. And while I would have liked to try the sweet biscuits mentioned in someone else's review, the good sized pieces of cornbread that came in their place before our meal made for a perfect replacement as they were huge and cake like. When you're in a restaurant that's known for its southern cooking as much as its Maryland seafood ordering from the menu can be a daunting task to accomplish. especially when it features the likes of country fried chicken steak, jumbo lump crabcakes made from Maryland crab, fried catfish w/ grits, and plenty of BBQ options. But the cornmeal crusted catfish with cheesy grits proved to e the perfect choice, especially when I ordered a cup of cream of crab soup to go along with it for good measure. seeing that the boozy portion of the liquor store was closed off on Sunday's was kind of odd. But being from PA i have learned to cope with far worse liquor laws, and the beer & wine selection that they had more than made up for it. And DuClaw's Preanut Butter Chocolate Porter and Devil's Backbone's German Style Black Lager became good additions to the long list of dark beers that I've savored. Combine both aspects of Rip's and you have a great on the road destination.

This review is for the deli and the liquor store. I just stopped in for some gin and a sandwich. The liquor store is an awesome maze-cave containing any libation you need plus a chipper staff to boot. The deli has all the old favorites. I was really impressed by the veggie sammich which has marinated tomatoes, olives, onions, feta, provolone, and pepperoncini. Get it with some sliced deli turkey or maybe some salami, you won't be disappointed.

This was not a good eating experience for us. The service lacked luster and attention. The manager seemed to have time to visit every other table a few times over but never seemed to stop at our table but we were the only table with children. The lump crab cake was far from lump; it was mushy and fishy. The cream of crab was like eating glue with pieces of crab in it. Very disappointing for the money. We will not return.

I love the look of this place. Very rustic. It feels like Christmas in here where you walk in. My aunt says it is usually packed during dinner. That's a good sign. When we sat down we realized the menu was different from the dinner menu. Obviously right. A lot of sandwiches. I had the Pulled Pork Sandwich, which wasn't bad. Not awesome, but not completely unforgettable either. All told a "nice" time.

We came to RIPS today to eat and fellowship after a joyous reunion weekend. The food came out except for one person who's meal seemed to not be ready. Between the waitress or management but they forgot about her food. We had been eating and sitting for at least an hour and a half at this point. Needless to say bills started being distributed when they realized she needed her food and packed it in a container. When asked could she be compensated a female manager appeared and stated that she couldn't do it unless something was wrong with the food. After much discrepancy she stated she wasn't changing it and the most she could do was take off a 3.50 mimosa. The patron stated her issue again and the manager took the food and threw it in the trash and said that she didn't have to pay but my friend still had no food. A new manager (male) came back there and found nothing wrong with the actions taken. They left the area without two checks being paid in which they were being taken care of because we used the honesty policy and paid when we could have walked out. Upon leaving, we spoke with those coming in and voiced our anger and at that time we were told we were trespassing and the female manager put her hand in my face and stated she would call the cops in which I stated I would wait for them. Needless to say she didn't. I have gone to the carry out or liquor store multiple times over the years but this service is unacceptable and I will not be returning.

"Remember, stressed is dessert spelled backwards!" This place was great. It felt like a more authentic and homey Cracker Barrel. We went there for lunch on a Monday and got seated right away. The specials looked great but we went for items off the regular menu. My wife had the crab cake club and I had the fish and grits. We would recommend them both but looking at the menu, we will try something new next time. We didn't try dessert but they looked great on the tray them use to show you your options.

Went with great friends. They, and now my husband, love your New Englander cod dish. I ordered the chopped beef & although delicious, how about putting more actual, VISIBLE beef in there instead of what appeared to be scattered 'flakes' of chipped beef. This dish looks different than anywhere else. Seriously, UP the beef y'all. Rayed great though & staff friendly enough.

My only regret is that I never knew about this place before my guy took me here. He is so perfect for me because he is so knowledgeable of all the great places to eat..that is a dream for a foodie like me..but anywhoo, back to the review. When we walked in the door we were greeted by a very nice young lady, and we were immediately led to our seats. We like to try crab soup anywhere that offers it and compare because it's our favorite. There cream of crab soup was delicious!!! We were in love. The entire meal was delicious. Like our cream of crab taste test, my son does this with buffalo wings and he said they were some of the best, if not THE best he's ever had. We were checked on throughout the meal and the manager even came by to make sure everything was okay. The menu is typically American food. This place just gives you a good down home vibe and hasn't lost a beat in the several decades that it's been operational. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Best wine and beer selection for miles around. Very helpful, unhurried wine guy helps you select your wine. Huge beer cooler. The restaurant has dark cozy booths like horse stalls (cue from horse racing local history). Easy on and off Route 50 and lots of parking. They also have a deli, a bar, and picnic tables outside under trees. They have been at this location for probably 50 years.

We went here instead of TJ Elliots, just for a change. Much less on the menu but enough of a range that we all found something. My son had meatloaf (one thick veal-pork-beef slice with tomato gravy) and green beans as well as peanut butter cream cheesecake. He loved and ate it all. We had very fresh tasting curried (very mild!) chicken salad sandwiches on rosemary foccacio bread which came with fries and fresh (not limp!) pickles. Also got a martini for $8.50 and some milk and a beer. All this and good friendly service for $55, although the waitress forgot to let us know about the specials on the menu! It's also wheelchair accessible --although there were some tight corners and lots of booths and smaller rooms to get into. Seems like a good place for a family meal.

Visited the restaurant several times for quality seafood dinner. I know nothing about the liquor store, Deli or the Inn. Walking in the establishment for the first time I was taken back by the décor, the restaurant reminds me of a horse stable?!? Not, sure how that fits in with seafood but anyway (lol), the food is delicious, worth a try. Can't miss it, direction wise because the location is right in the middle of a very busy intersection. Crab cakes and their stuffed shrimp are delish!

First time at Rips. We asked for a table, there was a 25 min wait. So, we waited for a few minutes, then told the hostess we had just decided to sit at the bar. After sitting at a bar table for 15 min, without a hello, a glass of water, a menu... We went back to the hostess stand and told her we would like to go back on her list. She replied "oh, now you want a table?" I replied, "Well, we sat without service for 15mins, so yes." No apology. Not sure why we stayed, but our food and waitress were both great. Thankfully!

Went here for Breakfast. We ordered Eggs Montoya which is two poached eggs on steak with hollandaise sauce. The eggs were hard cooked. The waitress brought us more eggs that were cooked the same. The eggs she brought came out in little ceramic dishes right from the microwave. Apparently the eggs are not poached as the menu states. The manager and waitress stated that this is the way the kitchen, with owners direction, prepare poached eggs. Maybe it's time they should poach the eggs in water or amend the menu description. So sad and what a missed opportunity for a good quality restaurant in Bowie. If you like Chef Mic(rowave) you'll love it here.

I absolutely loved this place. I had the Summer Shrimp Salad. It was great. Probably one of the top 5 salads I've ever had. Everything about it was juicy! Specially the cranverries and the big shrimp which were very clean and tasty. Friendly ambiance and I'm glad I chose this place to eat. I highly recommend this place for all ages. They also have a full bar and a convenience store next door. Excellent service as well.

Aestically, Rips is sort of cheesy. It really looks like a lumberyard exploded and left a restaurant in its wake. But, when you want a good brunch, you don't care about the looks of the restaurant, just the looks of the brunch menu itself, or buffet in the case. I've been to plenty of pretty places or places that look like they were decoratated by top designers, only to have the brunch suck. So, try to look past the decor. The brunch buffet at Rip's consists of an omelette station, pancakes, french toast, sausage, bacon, ham, roast beef, breaded fish, fruit, and a spread of breakfast breads and pastries. In addition, each buffet comes with a complimentary mimosa, a second mimosa for 99 cents, and, if you want a third, that one is around $2 I believe, but the waitress said that glass was a huge one. I don't know - I didn't go that hard this brunch.., just drank my two and then stole my husband's second one since he was nursing his first. lol! My hubby isn't a fan of Rip's as much as I am. He doesn't understand why I like it so much, as he thinks it's just a better version of a Bob Evans or something, but for me, the quality of the food and the service as well, not to mention the fact that it's never as jam-packed as those other places are after church on Sunday, makes it a clear winner. Been there a couple of times now (only for brunch) and have yet to be disappointed.

Sorry. I don't like to say bad things about a restaurant, but this one made my wife sick. She ordered a special of I think flounder or trout with crab meat. I believe that they probably had some questionable crab meat and decided to run a special to get rid of it. I ordered the prime rib medium rare and it came out rare. It was not trimmed properly, and I believe I got one of the first pieces because there was a lot of fat. When I got around the fat, the meat was tasty. We got a pizza for my daughter and she did not like it at all. It had way to much sauce on it.

I would skip the place for Sunday brunch. I can't comment on the normal menu but the brunch buffet was average at best and overpriced. $19 a person is very high for a mediocre meal and truck stops have better breakfast. The liquor store and deli attached looked good...good selection of beers and wine...just don't sit down and eat

We came here for their brunch, which is a pretty good deal; free mimosa, then 2 bucks for the second, and a made to order eggs Benedict. Good variety of food (though I wish they had kept the biscuits and gravy well-stocked). Place is a little cramped feeling, all the dark wood makes it feel smaller, but it's got an old charm. The staff was really nice (Bunny, you're a sweetheart). Now the liquor store portion... One of the best beer selections around. Really impressive, lots of great microbreweries.

Had dinner there last night and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The food was awesome. Started off with the cream of crab soup and the hot cornbread loaf. Lucky my Momma wasn't there. I may have smacked her, lol. Oooh and that honey butter...I came for the broiled seafood platter and they did not disappoint. We will definitely be making another visit in the near future.

Enjoyed a very good dinner here a week ago. Decor is appealing in that old style, family restaurant way with tons of wood and booths done up like horse stalls. Our server was friendly and earnest if a bit clueless about the menu which is full of family friendly fare like meat loaf, chopped steak, etc. Prices are reasonable. I had the fried oyster dinner and it was outstanding. Claiming that their oysters are locally-sourced Chesapeake Bay beauties only increased my desire to order them. I was not disappointed. Breading was crisp and not greasy. The oysters were plump, sweet, juicy and supremely fresh-tasting. Excellent. My friend ordered the full rack of baby back ribs. They were not the best I've ever had but were satisfying none the less. Also quite good was the side of mac and cheese. While the pasta was a bit overcooked the cheese was really great. We each tried the flight of beer - five four-ounce pours for something like $7. For another $3 you can choose a 12 oz. glass of the one you liked the best. A good deal.

Great atmosphere for a casual lunch.. I went on today with a very cranky 19 month old little boy and the wait staff were so patient and the lady that seated us was super friend.... They went out of their way to make us feel at home.. The Icing on the cake was the food!! Yummmmy! Chesapeake Burger: 8 oz of savoy beef, topped with this jumbo lump crab meat and provolone cheese, Wooooow! I'm getting one to go

Salad was excellent. Ordered the North Atlantic Cod. It was fried and battered right. Looked wonderful but the taste was bland. Not seasoned enough for my taste. Cornbread was good but 1 small piece for a table of 3 was laughable. Mac & Cheese was very tasty. Carrot cake was the bomb! Staff was very friendly. We were seated immediately. Waitress was great. Place was clean and pleasant. I will try this place again but will order something different.

I came here for breakfast and it was a great meal. The home fries are real potatoes and not some pre-packaged, pre-cut factory potatoes. The pancakes were delish. All in all, a great experience. Since we were here prior to Hurricane Irene we stopped off at the attached liquor store (which is HUGE) and bought some goodies to ride out the storm. Pricing is competitive and the waitress was super nice and very efficient.

This Review is for the Deli and Liquor Store. This place has been been a landmark for as long as I can remember. The Deli is located toward the back of the place but you can smell the deli goodness when you walk in the door. They serve a classic "Rip's Special Italian" that I had forgotten about but rediscovered recently. The perfect Italian cold cut that uses a crispy Italian roll not too soft, not too hard, and abundance of real Italian cold cuts, healthy portion of Feta Cheese, peppers, marinates sliced onions, olives, and anchovies (optional). Every bite there is an explosion of flavors and textures coming from the combination of great ingredients. It is the perfect size sandwich for lunch or an easy dinner...love it....5 stars easily. So why do I only offer 3 stars. The unbelievably rude staff at the checkout. I'm not talking one person or one experience it's the culture of this place. The older woman are nasty, don't smile or even acknowledge the customers. The angry dudes have the charm of Attila the Hun. I don't get it. This is the last place I would go to actually shop for any of the other products, but if you are in search for a great Italian sub check it out and don't bother smiling or engaging any of the staff it'll only disappoint.

Sad to report that this is another place we have stopped going in the Bowie area. I really wanted to love this place, as it is a local place amidst the chain restaurants on every corner. The food is somewhat decent but I always felt it was a little too expensive and that the menu is mostly seafood related but I don't think they have great cooks. I try to stay with safe stuff like fried shrimp which is pretty good but not great. One of the highlights of going to Rips was the sweet biscuits you got before dinner...and guess what? They don't have them anymore! That was enough for me. :(

I was pretty disappointed with my breakfast. I got the pancake breakfast. The potatos were awful. Waaaay too many green peppers and very mushy. I think breakfast potatos should be more crunchy thank soggy like mashed potatos. My eggs were scrambled with american cheese and onions. It was clear they added the cheese and onions AFTER cooking the eggs. They were awful and I did not eat them. Ihop does this egg order MUCH better. The only thing that was good were my pancakes and they were VERY good. I give this 2 stars b/c of the service, great pancakes, and super cheap prices.

5 stars for the wine and spirits store but the restaurant gets only one star! I love that they are willing to special order a wine that they may not carry or keep in stock. Also if you are having a wine tasting the are willing to make great suggestions. The food was greasy and bland. The best comparison would be to compare it to nursing home food or high school lunch room food.

I'd always heard about Rips, a long-standing family restaurant that many people from old Maryland loved to eat at. I'd never visited the place, except to note that on Sundays it looked like a traffic jam in the parking lot. Some families swore by it, others said it wasn't worth the money. When my in-laws, long time Marylanders, decided to eat there I figured I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, for all the hype I was rather disappointed. Yes, it does have a bit of an old Maryland country atmosphere. I did like the cozy decor and feel of the place. The food was decent as well, with only a few complaints. Plus, our server was excellent, willing to joke with us even when we were criticizing. However, I feel the place could use a little help: 1) Pricing - It's not ridiculous, but $12-16/plate for basic Americana food is a bit too much. We can get a little more interesting variety at a Bob Evans or Cracker Barrel. Add into this that the food is made true country style, such as using cornflakes in the breading. Sure brings back memories but I expect more than cornflakes when I'm paying that much. 2) "Mistake" Foods - While most of the food was decent, there were a few things that needed to be fixed/removed. Their macaroni and cheese was more macaroni and butter. Worse, they had this citrus butter for the bread which tasted like someone made a margarine and marmalade sandwich. 3) Management - Oh, don't get me wrong. They were very friendly and checked in on us. All of the staff did their job and did it well. However, I think the problem is this old Maryland country store is now being managed by someone who we guess is either from Africa or the Caribbean. I'm not denying a man the right to run whatever he wants... how much does he know about East Coast country cuisine? When we told him how horrible the butter was, he just laughed and said "Most people like it"... despite his own staff saying everyone has complained about it. This man better understand who his clients are and cater the menu to what they want, or they'll end up losing business. That being said, the place is OK for food. I had no problem with the meatloaf, the crab pie appetizer was delicious, and the staff were friendly and did their job. I just think it's a bit overpriced, they have some horrible food mistakes, and management doesn't seem to earnestly listen to the locals that have eaten there for decades.

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here. I went with the hubs and sister-in-law. We were "greeted and seated". No problem-o! I was a bit taken back by the decor. It was kinda old looking nautical stuff. A whole nautical-themed cracker barrel-ish type of thing going on. Nevertheless, the food was decent and service was just fine. I would go again to check out some more dishes.

We went there for Mother's Day brunch. Though it was really packed, we were seated pretty quickly. Our waitress was really nice and attentive. The food was tasty and they had a pretty good variety. We even got complimentary Mimosa's! I would take my parents there, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

This place is awesome! I went here on a business lunch and I'll admit, I was a little scared. The place is very rustic looking both inside and out. The menu is huge with wonderful and surprising choices. I had the Monte Cristo, because who doesn't love a sandwich on French toast! This is one of Rip's "specialty" items served with Melba sauce and homemade potato chips. YUM! It was REALLY hard to choose. Next time I'll try the "Fig and Pig" sandwich: thinly sliced Prosciutto ham on Rosemary focaccia with goat cheese, arugula, and roasted fig spread. I don't remember what my companions ate. I was too busy enjoying my meal. The rustic decor made the dining experience very intimate and even cozy. The place was mad crowded, but you really didn't notice as the booths are somewhat enclosed by large wood beams. It is also notable that the ladies room is just passed the liquor store on the right. That's right friends, there is a full liquor store on premises and they also offer overnight accommodations.

I've been going here for years and felt that in the last three or so, the service and quality had fallen. I went there yesterday and while the menu is not as extensive as it was 5+ years ago, the food was back to what I fondly remembered. To put it in perspective, I rarely eat everything on my plate. I do this for dietary reasons, because I don't like to feel stuffed and because I love leftovers. Yesterday, I ate EVERYTHING!! I loved it all. This includes the homemade potato chip appetizer. Those crispy morsels were covered with a melted cheese of some type, crumbled bacon and crumbled bleu cheese. Very tasty! I also ordered the cod, fried. Oh yeah, I went all out. I thought I would end up taking one piece home along with the sweet potato that I had for a side. Nope. It was so crispy and hot, yet moist and flaky inside that I could not resist. I ate everything. I don't even want to type what I had for the second side. I'm embarrassed. Thank God for the anonymity of the Internet. Go there. Rip's seems to be on the comeback.

Just left for dinner and drinks great atmosphere they have extended the car area so it's a lot more open and Alot more enjoyable. Tommy made our drinks at the bar and he did a great job from cinnamon toast shots to chocolate covered pretzels. I will bring back my family and friends in a heart beat. Great jobs RIPS

Really good breakfast buffet! I used to love going here Sunday mornings or afternoons with my family for the breakfast buffet. They have everything from bacon, to sausage, to eggs, to friut, to waffles, to pancake, to french toast...to even omlettes. The only thing that I did like about it is that I felt the orange juice glasses were way too small and they didn't give free refills.

  • Sarah W.

The Sunday brunch buffet was pretty bad. The fried cod ( a little weird for breakfast) was good, but everything else ranged from mediocre to bad. Even the freshly made omelet took forever, was underdone and underseasoned. At $17 dollars a person I expect much better.

Mama always said "liquor and comfort food go together like a 12 gauge and a shallow lake filled with fish." I confess she never claimed this but I wanted to start this review with a bang. Rip's is famous. It has a history and Sunday brunches here still make me salivate, even on the opposite side of the coast. They are country and do make comfort food. I was much more inclined to give them them a 4 star rating the first five or so times I visited. On the last two visits over the last 3 years, it still has the same atmosphere. Kind of regal, in a country way. One or two low lifes or teenagers hoping to score some booze from the connected liquor store and lots of families. The menu has enough to make one think for a few minutes and isn't plastered with page after page of selections like the diners down the street and the food is decent. The food is American. Country and pretty good. If you can, go for the weekend brunch.

RIPS is the place to go to if you need Liquor. Hands down. They have very assortment, and sizes available. I also eat at the deli every now and then. Very good sandwiches. I have never been to the brunch but will plan to check it out one day. They even have a motel in the back. What is there not to like. The Decor does need to be updated a little. But overall. Cool one stop shop.

I have never been to Rip's for anything other then brunch. I have always been pleased with the breakfast food, the services and the prices. My only issue -- It can get a little crowded. So, I don't recommend wearing your nice clothes because I wouldn't want you to risk getting anything on your clothes.

We went out last night after being turned away from ponchonpepes.com because the owner was having a private party for there grand opening which will be open to the public on Tuesday (grrr) so we went to Rip's Country Inn. I hate to do it but I have to Rip on Rip's. I ordered a lemonade which was so sweet and tangy my lips and cheeks sunk in. The cornbread starter was OK but very dry. I needed 2 waters to sooth my throat because it started to itch. I ordered the prime rib and my partner ordered the spare ribs. The two sides were broccoli and a loaded backed potato. Let me start with the good, the server, Chris was very nice and accommodating I give him a A for service. The food was not as accommodating unfortunately. The spare ribs were good, they had a charcoal from the grill taste to them which was pleasing, but my prime rib was so bland. It was so bland I had to add salt and pepper to it (which I never do) and that didn't even help. The loaded potato was so hard it could have been used for self defense. I joked that they probably used chef mic for everything because it came out rather fast. The bill was pretty high for the two dinners with no appetizer and I was not pleased, judging from the amount of customers there word is probably getting out that Rip's is just not what it used to be. First and last time I will go there unless there's some serious changes. It is a pity because it is the only steak and ribs specialty restaurant in the area.

This place is close to my wife's Mom and we have been going here for years. There are so many selections to choose from but we all gravitate towards the lump crab items. A favorite of ours is the Bacon Crab Melt on pumpernickel. Awesome. Full bar and a liquor store next door, where I have splunked for old Ports. It's very good and reasonable.

This review is for the Deli and Liquor Store part of Rips. As the previous review states, Rips is comprised of a restaurant, liquor store with a deli in it and a motel behind it. I can only comment on the deli and liquor store from experience, but I have seen good deals on seafood entrees advertised on their sign. The deli offers some great signature sandwiches and of course all the regular type of deli menu items. The french fries are crispy and plentiful and their French Dip is awesome. The prices are average and the service is fast. Call ahead and pick up in just 5 -10 minutes time because around the normal lunch hour, there is quite a crowd around the counter. The liquor store is big and offers a huge selection of beer, wine, and liquor in a very organized fashion. If you're looking for something that is hard to find, they probably have it. The staff is very friendly and quick to offer their assistance. They often have wine tastings on the weekends and also have a lotto counter.

I should have trusted the recent Yelp reviews which mentioned disappointment. A friend and I decided to try this restaurant (he ate at Rip's years ago and had good memories of the food). Ambiance - not bad. Campy, definitely (the booths are designed like horse stalls). Bathrooms were clean. Service - fantastic. The hostess and waitress were friendly, attentive, and really helpful when it came to menu questions. Without them, this would have been a completely bad dining experience. Food - ... So disappointing. My friend and I laughed because the best parts of our dinner were the grape tomatoes in the salad (which looked like it came directly from a Dole Salad Mix bag), and our cocktails (Jack & Coke for him, Bay Breeze fruity martini for me). We ordered French Onion Soup (not terrible, but I wouldn't go back to Rip's for this dish) and crab-stuffed flounder (the brown rice that it came with was fine; the flounder and crab themselves were bland and smothered in creamy goo that lacked any satisfying flavor - juice from sliced lemons made it manageable). I would not return here for food. I might return for the full service bar (drinks were reasonably priced, ~$6/per). I will return for the liquor store!

I've been there for dinner a couple of times, and have shopped at the wine store. The restaurant's decor is a bit rustic and dark, but the food isn't bad at all. I really like the fried chicken - nice and crispy and juicy. The food is decently priced and the service is alright. Generally, a good place for dinner.

This is the place to go for home cookin'. It's not gourmet, but it's good, old faithful standards. Crabcakes are good, prime rib specials on the weekend are really good and the fresh baked muffins are the bomb! If they have stuffed rockfish...get it! If you are going with a large group, just hang on...they'll accomodate you. Large groups show up unannounced and if they can, they'll fit you in, but I would suggest calling ahead first. (even if you're on your way) Check your take out orders BEFORE you leave. (trust me) Tends to be frequent staff turnover, but there are a few long time servers there...and you can tell the difference. Looks like they're about to do some updates...stay tuned...this "Bowie Institution" could be getting better! The liquor store has everything! A huge selection and great prices. Monday is "wine day" where you'll save 20% on regular priced wine when you buy 3 bottles or more. They have very knowledgable staff available to help with you wine choices and I've never been steered wrong. Seriously...they know their stuff. Stop in for wine tastings too! Extensive beer and liquor selection too. Love the deli! If you buy the gyro...be hungry! It is huge and super tasty! I've had just about every sandwich on the menu, they're all good and reasonably priced. A landmark in Bowie, you must go there!

this is where i take my grandma for brunch when she comes to visit, and that's pretty much the kind of place it is. mellow (to put it mildly), quiet, dark, plain, etc with mediocre food. the building is set up like (or maybe even was at one time) a barn & horse stables, which is quaint, i guess. sunday brunch can get sort of busy, but never really that rushed. i haven't been there (and won't go) for any other meal so can't speak to that. judging by the menu though, it's your basic meat and potatoes type of american fare. nothing exciting. i have gone to the attached liquor store several times and find that to be a good spot to stock your wine rack or bar for a dinner party. the store clerks are very friendly and helpful too. i can never remember or pronounce that nice fetzer white that i like, and i just sort of muble a long german sounding word by way of explanation and they know what i'm talking about. i'll continue to shop at the store, but the restaurant won't see me unless grandma comes back for a visit and wants breakfast out again.

I spent one summer working at a cattle farm, making all of its barns and stables wireless (yeah, it was pretty damn cool). Anyway, I thought that the architecture from the old-school stables would make a great restaurant. But you'll have to take out the horses, cows, hay and stench from the equation. Apparently, the folks behind Rips have the similar idea. Their restaurant have different compartents, one of which are stables of tables (that rhymes!). The food ain't too shabby, either. Most folks go there for the all-you-can-eat buffet, especially during Sunday brunch. The meals won't break your bank. Sunday brunch is about $8 per person not including drinks (which falls between $1 to $5). Not bad, eh?

We went to Rips for dinner with friends on New Years Eve, and had a really nice dinner. The food is standard American fare, but everything was yummy, albeit a little on the buttery side (not that I'm exactly complaining about too much butter). The basil salmon was very good, as was the flounder Chesapeake. My husband really liked the Maryland fried chicken, although he said it was a little on the dry side (the decadent mashed potatoes and gravy made up for it). The service was great, and while the decor is straight out of a ol' Western, I'm looking forward to going back sometime.

I want to like this place because its a landmark. We went there for breakfast Labor day weekend. And really, its a safe place for your parents or grandparents. Meaning, its flavorless. I find it all bland.Since they are on Rt. 301 at Route 50 they get loads of tourists, or people passing through. My blueberry pancakes were fine for breakfast. But the place lacks passion. Its dark, really dark inside. I know the place has a stable/ horse theme but it needs to be refreshed. The decor isn't modern or contemporary at all. I would rather come here for breakfast/brunch since its harder to mess that up, I really don't like coming here for lunch or dinner. But they have been open for decades and have legions of fans, I am not one of them. I hear the deli in the liquor store makes great sandwiches, maybe they can get together with the kitchen staff a the restaurant and help revamp the menu and create some excitement and love in the place.

I've visted this place on numerous times and the food is average, nothing special. On the night of Oct. 4, me and my roommate went here and although the food was okay, the server was not very good. She forgot to do many things, refill our water glass, bring a container for my cole slaw and check on us periodically. She kept apologizing for assisting other tables before she returned. I don't think she could multi-task very well. Other than that, the food was okay as usual.
