There aren't many places that can satisfy a good cheap meal in Bethesda anymore. There is literally a beer special or food special everyday of the week. Just finished a burger and beer while playing trivia for only $10. You can't beat that! The service has certainly improved over the years and the staff is a fun group to watch work behind the bar. It's nice having this hang out off the beaten path, because Hard Times always seems not too busy, but busy enough!

Ordered takeout from here today for lunch. I heard that this place has great chilli but I opted for the Texas Grilled Chicken Sandwich. My friends got the sante fe chicken salad and the Grilled Salmon Salad. My chicken sandwich was good, but it was a lil bit cold when I started eating it. The Salmon Salad was huge with a huge piece of Salmon in it. They forgot to give her the dressing for the salad though. The people there were nice, but the service could have been improved a little bit. We were told the food would be ready in ten minutes so we went there about then, and we had to wait ten more minutes for the salmon salad, while everything else was done. That could be why my sandwich wasn't very warm. Also, they forgot the dressing for one of the salads, which I think is a big no no. Maybe this place is better if you dine in, but from what I've read on here, it's kind of hit or miss though. Will come back to try this famous chilli though.

My experiences at the Hard Times in Bethesda are great! They fulfill their motto of "good cheap eats" and the Beer is always cold. Their wings are outasite, their special events are super crafted (You don't see bands come into restaurants much) beer tastings are the best! One thing I have noticed is that they roll out the red carpet to all sorts of PTAs, Alumni Associations, and Clubs more than the Touchdown Club can! No better place to meet a group of friends than at the Bethesda Hard Times! Greg Hourigan and Steve are all heart as owners, and are very dedicated with the community in their involvement(the upcoming Strathmore Moviefest is sponsored by Hard Times)

Best darn wings and the Texas 5 way is the best ever. Coldest beer possible. Good price.

Hard times is more of a bar atmosphere, the food is all Texas style, from Frito pie to mac n' cheese with chili. However I still think the Original Texas BBQ wings at hard times are the best wings I have ever had, especially in the bethesda/rockville area. I get these wings for parties I throw and everyone loves them. They are amazing. The rest of the food is alright, it depends what you order. For instance the mac n' cheese and chili is really good, as well as their chili itself. However these wings are some of the best wings around. The parking is easy, there is a lot right across from the joint. It is fun to go with friends to get wings beer and watch a game. The service is also fabulous and it is a very inexpensive place! Definitely worth stopping in for the wings and chili!

They have a great lunch special on Thursday...You order your food, wait 45 minutes, then are told that your order was "lost" and they have to put it back in. All the while, you are in the middle of a work day and pressed for time anyway...so you end up leaving and going down the street for pizza by the slice to prevent a hunger induced collapse. Then, after a few minutes you feel terrible about the mutterings under your breath definitely heard by the friendly hostess who was merely wishing you a nice day. Finally, you show back up to the office after being gone for well over an hour, with a box of cold pizza that you haven't even tasted yet. it's awesome! (not sure if/when they are repeating this special) I know this sounds like sour grapes after a probable fluke in horrible service, but this is indicative of what you'll find at the Bethesda location. I'm a big fan of the Hard Times Cafes around the metro DC area. Usually reasonably priced, friendly service, good food, and specials that are worth a planned trip. But there just seems to be a lack of effort in getting you your food in a reasonable time in Bethesda. The place is intentionally designed like a hole-in-the-wall, so it's not like you can soak in ambiance while you're waiting. Generally restaurants in a commercial area like this try to cater to the lunch time rush of a normal professional's work day. Plus, add about 30% to the cost of any other Hard Times. Make the drive up to Rockville if you want to try it.

For what they do they do well. The food is consistently good and the service is on the level. For those that don't like a bar restaurant atmosphere look elsewhere, but for the average guy looking for a good belly full. Get to it, hard to find better.

Really good/excellent wings, large, crisp, not to messy and not the little sparrows wings you get at Hooters. Choice of Chili's Cincinnati, Texas, veggie and one other. All good , even the veggie. Go with Cincinnati 5 way....almost as good as Skyline in Cincinnati. Also a few good micro beers on tap as well as the basics. Across the board always good bar food, good atmosphere, lots of TV's and games.

The foods pretty good -- variety of chilis. The SW eggrolls are great! It's neat when you sit at the bar that the bartenders also cook the food! I'm impressed by their skills. Most are really cool and friendly; the old surly guy is just being himself -- cool with that. I'm just not a big fan of the way the place is set up or I'd be there more frequently.

It is alright, but their chili sauce you get out of the hot sauce bottle is awesome. It is very greasy, however it is a place that revolves solely around a bar, and bar food. Altogether, I wouldn't say you should avoid it or go out of your way for it. Just wander in there if you are ever in the area looking for somewhere cheap to eat.

Their specialty is their chili -- and I hate to say it but it isn't very special. I frankly don't care much for it. First of all, the vegetarian has fake meat in it and it has the texture of old oatmeal -- and none of their chili has beans in it. Their chili isn't very hot or spicy either....not all that flavorful -- really a bit of a disappointment. The guy from Super Size me should come and eat every meal at Hard Times for a month -- I think the results would be even worse than McDonald's -- the portions are huge, the food is greasy and leaves you feeling rather ummmm...well, let's just say sick. I do know people that like Hard Times-- and I gave it 3 chances -- and just need to say that I don't know what people like about this place.

we love the fact that at Hard Times, you can add chili to just about anything. It's cheap, it's greasy, it's messy, but when you are hung over...it's the best thing in town.

Hard Times isn't great but it often hits the spot. The wings are great and a Super Bowl staple of ours. They are big and grilled. Chili is what Hard Times claims to be best at, but it is hit or miss. Usually it resembles hamburger meat with a little spice. I prefer my chili wet and sloppy. The burgers and good and the atmosphere is fairly lively. Kids seem pretty happy here. This place almost guarentees heartburn.

This is a very simple place. They have standard American fare, specializing in chili and putting chili on a variety of things. It's pretty good, but nothing amazing. Service is friendly, but short staffed, and decor is somewhat of a Texas diner, again, nothing special. It's a decent place to go grab a burger or a chili dog, but is a little on the pricey side for what you get. $9 for a burger, and $8.50 for chili dog (all be it a 1/4 dog) is a bit much, and really, you can find better in the area.

My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and got great service. We really liked the Texas wings. The chili sampler was good, however the chili didn't taste as flavorful over the spaghetti. Next time we'll try the chili by itself. The guys there work hard!

I have a love/hate relationship with this place. Hate the prices - way too high. Love the cincinnati chili. Hate the slow service at this location. It's a great place for greasy bar food like hot dogs, spaghetti with chili, onion rings, etc. I started buying the packets of the cincinnati chili spices - they sell them for 1 box @ $4 and you get two spice packets and I make the stuff at home. One spice pack makes like 1.5-2 lbs of chili - enough to last for a good few days and at a fraction of the cost of enduring a meal at Hard Times.

Wow. Everybody, ignore everybody else's reviews. Great flavorful chili with spaghetti onions beans and cheese and you got the full package. Their chilli is great and great burgers, wings, ribs and sandwiches. Also the chilli salad has salad (obviously) chilli and other vegetables making it a great and rather healthy meal. I must say the chilli dishes are a heart attack on a plate. Very cheap prices, friendliest waiters around and a great atmosphere. Hard times is one of the best overall restaurants around.

Their sampler was decent. I don't know what good chili is, but I enjoyed the taste of what I got in the sampler, and then the Texas chili, though things did taste on the high-sodium side. Additionally, as it was Taco Tuesday, I ordered fish tacos, which were were satisfactory enough, if unremarkable. Certainly, the portion sizes here were generous. I came out of here with a heavy food coma. I would really assign this place 3.5 stars if I could. Rounding up this time because this meal left me feeling affably and warmly stuffed.

ATMOSPHERE Hard Times has a tavern/sports bar feel. The bottom level is reserved for tables and is more of a sit-down area. Upstairs is like your typical sports bar. There are TONS of tvs and plenty of tables. FOOD Hard times is definitely known for its chili. Every time I go I ask for a chili sampler (its free), which gives you a taste of the different types of chili. The fried pickles are really good, as well as the chili cheese fries. Last time I was there I ordered the chicken tenders texas hot style. The sauce was very tangy and spicy. DRINKS The drink prices are really good. There are usually specials on pitchers or domestic drafts. ADVICE Hard times is a great spot to watch a sports game. I wouldn't recommend going on a night out, just because there are livelier bars in the area, but Hard Times is always a good option for happy hour. My advice - go watch the next wizards/redskins game and start off with a beer and the chili sampler.

For starters... deep fried pickles...get them, you must!!tonight I decided to dip them in vanilla ice cream (both on the menu seperately) but amazeballs together. I'm usually here for the big heaping of nachos or their great wings but tonight, after a few beers, I just wanted a PB&J!! It was grilled and amazing. Not on the menu but be sure to ask for it. They're pretty accommodating and the food is awesome, filling and inexpensive!! my spot

I've never been the biggest fan of Wednesdays. They just sit there, smack-dab in the middle of the week, holding you back from days like Thursday or Friday. I do, however, love wings. Wings may in fact be the only redeeming quality of Wednesdays. When some genius decided to make wings cheaper on Wednesdays, they did the human race a favor. Nobel prize worthy if you ask me. But I digress. Hard times (as you may have guessed) runs wing specials on Wednesdays. Their 1lb plates are something like $6.99, and are great to share. They have a variety of flavors, but I would stick with either the Original Texas, Honey BBQ, Sweet Red Chili, or Teriayki. All winners. The Old Bay and and Chili Lime disappointed. The chili here is outstanding, but if you're not familiar with Texas or Cincinnati chili, ask your waiter for a description. And don't be confused when a seasoned bowl of ground beef comes out. You have to request to have beans. As a West Coaster this concept was slightly foreign to me, but I'm not complaining about a delicious bowl of seasoned ground beef. They were out of their Wednesday night beer special last week (Natty Boh 16 oz for $3), which was slightly disappointing. Definitely a regular weeknight haunt.

I went here with a group of 5 friends, and we had a fairly good time. We had stopped by for lunch on Christmas Eve, so the place was pretty empty - maybe four or five tables were occupied. The menu is pretty basic, with burgers, wings, wraps, sandwiches, and a ton of chili options. It can be a little misleading, but if you're ordering chili you actually pick the chili and then pick the dish (so not just a bowl of chili, unless you want that). Chili over spaghetti, chili over...whatever. I actually got a burger, which was pretty good, but nothing amazing. The service was okay - my group got a little abandoned by the end of our meal, probably because we stuck around to chat a while afterwards. It would have been nice if the servers would have stopped by to ask if we wanted anything else, but oh well! Merry (belated) Christmas.

It's hard to be judgemental about a place that clearly isn't. You'll find Hard Times Cafe to be welcoming, comfortable, and a great place to enjoy a meal. The meal - at least the chili - leaves a little to be desired, though. Don't expect chunky, hearty chili here. What the menu calls 'chili' is more like a dry coney sauce (or 'loose beef' if you're from the midwest). It's good, but more fitting for a bun than a bowl.

Stopped in this place on a Friday night. I have been going to Hard Times since High school, mostly in Rockville and College Park, so I figured I'd give this one a go. Had the Chili sampler, a must since it's free. My favorite is the Red. Also had the poppers which were a bit over fried but spicy and good with the sour cream sauce. They make decent burgers as well, but my personal favorite, besides the chili is the Alamo, a delicious chicken and tomatoes dish. Another good thing about this place is their late night Happy hour from 8-10p. $2 beers in Bethesda is basically unheard of. Bartender was attentive and refilled on schedule. They had a live band as well, playing mostly classic rock. Overall, this place is not fancy, hence the name. If you're looking for upscale dining go elsewhere. If you want a chil spot with cheap drinks and simple food, or a place to catch the game, this is for you.

Have been a fan of Hard Times for over 25 years, mostly going to the location in Rockville where the chili was consistent. Once tried Bethesda and since we were recently relocated from Gaithersburg to Bethesda, figured that we would try this place out. Heck, the 4 blocks walk to/from work would probably do us good? Sarah is great. She listens and actually talks to you. No waiting for drink refills or the check! *Hint: Get the draft root beer! I don't think there is any other place that serves it? Always ask for the chili sampler where they bring you a small multi-dish of all of the different types of chili, You'd be surprised at how different they are! A/C needs a little work, as it seems to be warmer than I like. We'll be back.....

I have been eating at one or another Hard Times restaurant since 1987, almost once per month. It's all about the chili, really. If you're not into that, the rest of the menu is pretty standard comfort food and definitely not health food. The chili is very reasonably priced - they make their money on the beer and every location has its regulars who park at the bar and finance the place. Good for them, great for the rest of us.

I have been going to hard times since high school. By far, the best thing on the menu is the Texas wings. Grilled, bone in, not too dry, not too saucy, charred from the grill. These are by far the best wings I've ever had in my life. Seriously please do not dispute that. Oh and they are half off on Wednesdays. Next question. A few of the other highlights: -cheap beer on tap -Texas beers (shiner etc) -plenty of tvs -Texas style chicken (grilled or fried) sandwich -Chilli (hard times is technically a Chilli place first) I prefer Texas but I hear Cincinnati a lot -burgers -any of the heart attack esque apps Love you always HTs and see you tonight, Colin
(5)
Mike H.
We love Hard Times but at this location we have had bad service during all 3 visits. The servers are nice enough, but getting our orders takes twice as long as other HT locations (the Rockville location is really efficient). The food is good, but you end up leaving irritated with how long it takes to have a casual meal.

This is a Chili place, and great chili at that. Those who have a regional bias will find something here because unlike most places that have chili, Hard Times does 4 different style chilies and does them all quite well. I am partial to the Texas, and my son was literally raised on the Cincinnati. In any case, you can add onions, Spaghetti, and cheese to any of their styles: Texas, Cincinnati, Vegetarian, and Teralingo Red. It's nice that onions are an add on because a shocking number of people claim onion sensitivity. The burgers are good, as is the grilled chicken texas style, but I am not a fan of their bun. What is great about this location is that it is a good local bar with decent food. It's like a Cheers, where everyone knows your name. Much of the staff has been there forever and years ago when the place was going through tough times during the renovation of the garage across the street patrons literally passed the hat to keep the place going. The menu is kind of bar like, other than chili. LOTS of fried. Though their salads are pretty good. Some love the wings, and I will get those from time to time. (I like the boneless wings.) It is a fun place to go and get a disgustingly bad-for you bunch of appetizers and drink a few pints. A few times a year they have beer tastings that are loads of fun: Usually all you can eat and lots of beer to taste for $25-$30. It's not a place for everyone, but it is a great place to bring kids--its loud and there is no shame in letting your little guy make a pig of himself in this casual atmosphere.
(5)
Carolina R.
The chilli here is the best. They don't use any beans, which is the right way to make chilli. My favorite is the Texas chilli which is smoky and meaty.
(5)
Chris J.
I mostly eat and drink at the bar, better service and better employees. Great beer specials and the best "comfort food" you can get. Wings, nachos, chicken tenders, tacos, and of course-chili. You can add beans to the chili as well. Been coming here for years and always look forward to a good football game here, doesn't matter on the day. I'm a fan!

The first time I went I met Tim who was working behind the bar and whom I think is a manager. He was extremely friendly and helpful in guiding us through the menu choices. He recommended the Texas Wings and Honey BBQ wings. We also got the Santa Fe Rolls and the corn dog nuggets, all of which Tim said were great. He was spot on! So far this is one of the best places for wings we have been to in the DC area. We will definitely be back!
(5)

Got the 5-Way Chili Mac. The chili was pretty good, but I'd recommend it going on a different base, maybe the tater tots. It's a little expensive for chili. You can get the sampler of chili to try out all four chilis first. I felt all four chilis were really good, hard to pick a preferred one.
We went here over MLK Jr. weekend in 2014 and the place was filled with gnats--when we noted it to the host, he said the management knew, and didn't offer a discount or an apology. It was an unpleasant dining experience even though the chili was pretty good. We prefer this chili to Ben's when we are at the Nats stadium...where they haven't been plagued with gnats. Go Nats no gnats!

I was so ready to like Hard Times Cafe after reading all the great reviews here, but unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations at all. And even worse, my boyfriend and his sister agreed with me, so I know it's not just me. It wasn't all bad to be sure, but I was just generally underwhelmed. This place left a lot to be desired. FIrst, some positives. The service is very friendly, and they didn't get anything wrong in our orders. Our starters were actually pretty tasty. We had the jalapeno poppers, which had just the right balance to them, and the fried pickles, which were solid and came with a nice side of ranch. They also had some pretty great specials even on a Saturday night, with $8 pitchers of four major beers. Sadly, that's where the positives end. The decor seemed kind of depressing, and though I saw a lot of families there--which was nice--it just didn't seem to have much of an identity even for a family-oriented clientele. I had the vegetarian chili, which just tasted completely bland and uninteresting. My companions both had the Texas chili and felt the same way, so I knew it wasn't just a problem of not understanding how to make good vegetarian food. It tasted more just like seasoned meat than an actual chili. Also, the cornbread was just dry and bland, and I was left mostly with the taste of raw onions in my mouth at the end of the day. The frito bowl and tater tots were described similarly. Plus, these bowls of relatively boring chili with some form of carbs cost.....$10? I could get a way better meal at a way classier restaurant for that price. I honestly left feeling heavy--not full in the good way, but just heavy. The meal just weighed me down in the least satisfying way possible, as I didn't even feel like it was worth that kind of nutritional splurge.

I really do not understand how this place could get over two stars. First of all the table was sooo sticky. It felt like it had not been cleaned in days. The guy who waited on me did not have much of a personality and I actually only saw him when he took my order and brought my food. I had to go to the bar to get my own drinks. He never even came back to give me my check. I ordered a cheeseburger and fries. It was the greasiest, most disgusting burger I have ever had. I could not even finish. The grease was pouring out every time i picked it up. The fries were also greasy and mushy. It is a very strange set up because they cook right behind the bar. So if you like sitting at the bar, you are just watching 2 or 3 guys cooking at a grill. I have been to the Springfield Va. Hard Times and it is much better. I do not recommend this place at all.

The best chili ever. Get it however you want. Tomatoes, rice, cheese, onions, beans - you name it. Great service too. Boneless wings are simply the greatest. It's become a regular place for our family. Plus tons of TV's to watch sports.

I stopped by here last night for din-din. I've been here once before to witness a friend polish off their wings on a Wednesday night, but I was just a mere observer that time. This time, I dove right in! I expected the food to be one step up from standard bar food and that is pretty much what I got. The restaurant is casual and is reminiscent of what I would imagine an old time, cowboy parlor bar too look like but with a bit more of a modern take on it. We first started with a heaping serving of vegetarian chili nachos. This was a beast of a serving and kept all four of us very satisfied and occupied as we waited for our meals. The nachos were covered generously with melted, shredded cheese, vegetarian chili, sour cream and diced jalapenos and tomatoes. The toppings were tasty and fresh. A lovely binge for the group. I sipped on a delicious Dogfish pumpkin beer until our food came out. I opted to split the Whiskey River BBQ Bacon Burger which came with bacon, cheese, BBQ and two onion rings. We ordered in medium-rare and received it medium-well. No biggie for me, but I don't really remember the onion rings in this burger. They may have gotten sogged out by the BBQ sauce? Nevertheless, it was satisfying. I'm glad we split it though, because it was pretty damn big! Oh and apparently on Mondays, there is a half-price burger special so it was a good deal! The fries that accompanied the burger could have used a little salt, or flavor of any sort for that matter. The Santa Fe Chicken Salad that we split was really good and a HUGE portion. Chicken, corn, shredded tortilla crisps, tomato and shredded cheddar atop a garden salad served with Mex-Ranch dressing. Delicious! Service was un-memorable, but all that means is that our server was pleasant but not too extremely engaging. However, he got all of the specifics of our special order right the first time, so kudos there. Overall, a filling and satisfying meal of comfort, junk food. The ingredients were fresh and nothing was too greasy or complicated. I'd come back again to watch a game and grab some of the chili which they seem to be known for.

A couple of days ago, I was discussing cinnamon with my wife -- don't ask why! -- and she asked me if I liked it; I said I did, and even in Cincinnati chili, which must be the weirdest thing to put cinnamon in that there is. But that got me wanting to taste some, and this is the only place I know. (They have other locations, but the Bethesda one is the only one that is near where I travel). I came back yesterday, for the first time in many months, and of course, I ordered the Cincinnati chili, which, as always, was good. The chili is reasonably priced -- a bowl runs in the $8-9 range -- but the prices for drinks are sky-high (over $2.50 for an iced tea?!) so all and all, this is not the really cheap place to eat that HTC was when I first discovered them in Alexandria many years ago, but it's about the high end of what I'm willing to spend. The chili and iced tea came to a bit under $13, to which of course, I had to add a tip, but I note that that's not much above what I said it cost me in an August 2009 review, so at least their prices have been pretty stable. Their only menu items are basically the chili, so don't come here unless that's what you're looking for. But it's good stuff, if chili is what you're in the mood for.

**WARNING: Only come to Hard Times if you plan on being a total fatass** I love Hard Times but my experiences at this location have been mixed. The boneless honey barbeque wings are my favorite thing here, but last time I came, they ran out. Wtfizzle. The nachos are pretty good. I love the cinncinati chilli. I got the applewood BBQ chicken sandwich for my main since they were out of chicken wings and it kinda sucked. Not enough BBQ sauce. Would not recommend it. The Santa Fe Chicken Salad is good. I'd recommend getting it chopped. The service here is very iffy. Very very iffy. It definitely depends who you get. The beer selection is pretty good...when they have the beer you want.

I've gotten the food here a couple times and it's been ok. Not great but good. They have a few different types of chili that you can get on pretty much anything they have there. The quality can vary depending on the day you go in. But I don't think the food is really the reason to go in general... They are probably the best place for cheap beer in Bethesda. They have beer (and food) specials just about every day. My girlfriend and I enjoyed some $2 domestic bottles over the Memorial Day weekend. It might not seem like a steal but in Bethesda, that's pretty good. The bartenders are cool too. Very friendly and attentive.

Great bar food and above average draft beer selection. They've had Arrogant Bastard, Sierra Nevada Hoptimum and other excellent beers on their constantly rotating taps. I like all the chili options (except the veggie, which I never get, but my wife always gets and likes). I usually do a half and half with Terelingua Red and alternate between Texas and Cincinnati (unless I get the coneys, in which case I always get Terelingua Red and Cincinnati). College Park location is also good. Slight different menu, which I find slightly odd.

Great prices, THE BEST WINGS IN THE AREA. Ask for the grilled wings, you won't be disappointed, especially if you see a really old guy cooking behind the bar. Big local hangout. The Bethesda location is the best, the others are not so reliable.

Amanda N.
Love the happy hours here!! Great deals and super cheap (especially if you are ordering food for a group of people and splitting the bill). Love the wings but I just wish they weren't as salty. The chili nachos are also very good, especially the Texas Chili. I come here all the time for happy hour.

Hard Times is my go to restaurant, whichever location. The wings are the bomb. Ask for them burnt, they grill them so they are not so sloppy and even more tasty, if that were possible. Bethesda service is not so good on Saturdays but the food is still good.

Eh*. *As I sit here and ponder how to review HTC, that's all I could think of. My meal was satisfying in an-OMG-did-I-really-just-eat-all-of-that-greasy-Âbar-food-kind-of-way but not memorable enough to return anytime soon.

I was extremely pleased with my Texas Style Wings (and I'm from Texas) and my burger was good too, I came on a day where they had specials on their burgers and overall, the value for the food here is tough to beat in Bethesda where many venues are overpriced in my opinion. The place was clean, waitstaff was great and it's a good place for kids. I do wish they had more TV's or better visibility for sports. I'll be back many times.

Not too bad. Went for happy hour this past Friday with some coworkers. They seemed really confused when I asked for a Tequila Sunrise, but I am used to that. Never seen so many bartenders try to pass off the duty of making a simple drink before. Hanging out at the bar (as one does) I tried some wings which were decent but nothing terribly amazing. Don't get wrong, I would eat them again without hesitation, but they won't make my 'Wings you must have' list. The nachos on the other hand are great. I could stand to have a little bit more melted cheese on them, but they really pile on the meat with those bad boys. A lot of places have some meat buried in there, and you are lucky to find it. At Hard Times its MEAT and some chips and other toppings involved too. Really great. I took on the task of consuming it WITHOUT UTENSILS, yes, despite drinking tequila sunrises, I proved myself as a man that day. But honestly, I think its something you should almost eat with a fork, or just be ok with getting your fingers a little messy because it is overpiled with meat, cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, etc. I highly recommend it to be split between at least two people. And would come back for it again some time.

I decided to visit one night because I was craving fried pickles, I ended up ordering the pickles and the bacon cheeseburger. I loved the pickles, I wasn't impressed with the burger, the meat had not flavor on its own. IIt was extremely noisy that night. Not a place to chill.

Filthy and the food smelled really, really off. The meat did not smell right, my hot dog bun was stale, the place was very unclean. Not once did I see anyone wash their hands or clean anything. I'm big on sanitation, and this place was seriously lacking it.

What a super great bunch of upbeat employees! Having been active with the BC-C Rescue for a VERY long time, I was a frequent patron and kind-a forgot about the place. Recently, wife & I have been going there about once a month, for lunch. I am seldom a night person and NOT into sports or NOISE; sorry! Normally the Chicken Alamo for me & mild chili over pasta for Karen. But oh: $5.99 is Monday Burger day. That got my attention and Burger it, I did. A bit dry but that was likely my fault in asking for it too well done. A huge order of fries with my burger and corn bread for Her. The food IS good but the service and positive attitude of ALL the staff that I observed was exceptional. Personally, I find that trait lacking even in "classier" establishments. Thanks Hard Times for your kindness & professionalism.

I'm a fan of hot dogs. And by fan, I mean if hot dogs were cheap at baseball games, I would eat one for every inning. The different kinds of chili at Hard Times are good, but there's something a little lacking. Definitely let this be a late night meal so you can go home. Last time I ate there, my entire party got sick from their food. It still tastes good, but the post-meal experience should definitely be taken into consideration.

First of all, this is basically a chili place... so don't bother ordering food here unless it involves chili in some capacity. I will say the wings are decent (not great), but I'm a bit of a wing snob anyway. All their chili is awesome, and there's something for every taste, which can be modified with toppings, depending on your desire to experiment with flavors. Over the years, I have tried various combinations of cheese, onion, peppers, tomatoes, even sliced hot dog, on a bowl of chili... without disappointment. The other reason to come here is for their beer selection, which might be the best in Bethesda. At any given time, they'll have several quality microbrews on tap, that change seasonally, and are specially selected for this location only. So... for chili and beer, can't give them less than 5 stars!

Simply the best wings. Texas style, finished on the grill. Vegetarian chili is wonderfully seasoned...... Bar food done right! One other cool thing..... The owners support local charities and causes. I will definitely be back. Again and again.

Cold beer and hot chili = great combo. Just stick to the draft beer. Bottled beer may not be cold, which is a problem on so many levels. Texas style chili, Texas wings, even chicken sandwich with wing sauce are very tasty. Good burgers if not over cooked to go with the cold beer. Nice people, many tvs. Nice joint.

Maybe I was wrong to come here on a game day or maybe the service is just bad...not sure. Either way i'm not coming back I took my boys here after going to see a play at Imagination Stage. We walked in and stood at the host desk, three people passed me, none making eye contact or even acknowledging that I was there at all. Finally someone asked how many and sat us. He came back 5 minutes later to take our drink orders and I ordered two appetizers. After maybe 7-8 more minutes he dropped the drinks off and almost ran away but I told him I was ready to order and he took our orders. We sat and waited...and waited, I saw people around me getting food who hadn't been there first...okay no problem, i've served, I know how the system works especially when it comes to a multiple person table vs a one person table, it happens. What I have always hated is appetizers and meals coming at the same time and this time it was even worse: the meal came and then maybe 3 minutes later i'm looking at my appetizers...umm what?! There was no reason at all for that, there was a gap in time between app and entree orders, unless he put it all in at the same time. There was no apology or even acknowledgement of how backwards that was, just a drop off and run away again. The server came over a few times to ask if everything was okay in a lackluster tone, he seemed rush and generally uninterested to be there. I overheard him talking to the table behind me about how he was having an annoying day...sorry? I asked for boxes, he passed the table about 3 times with no boxes. We had three boxes, he never offered us a bag and I couldn't find him again to ask for one...Honestly the quickest thing this guy did was bring me the check, when it came to that he became Speedy Gonzales. The food was fine, we got wings, bacon and cheese fries, cornbread and chili, a hot dog, and chili mac...everything tasted fine for that it was. I would go to another location, but this one was just...meh no thanks!

I met a group of friends here this afternoon(Sunday) and we had a great time. Staff was very helpful and friendly and the wings are pretty good too.

A small, local chain - the basics are the same but the ownership varies. Our local Hard Times is run by some genuinely hospitable and civic-minded people. Very good food (mine's the Cincinnati 3-way) and drink. Something for everyone - even that vegetarian in the family. A great go-to when you just can't decide. Works just as well as a destination, too.

You know that Seinfeld episode where Jerry is eating frozen yogurt and keeps raving about how good it is and finally says "this so f#%king good!!" in front of that child? This is how I feel every time I eat their original Texas wings. I don't know exactly what is in the seasoning but they are the best wings in Bethesda. I love them deeply and I don't ever want them to leave me. The only thing I don't get is how they are known for their chili. It is just your average standard chili. Not bad, but nothing special. The wings though, yes sir bob, are something special, and I love them.

I have been going to this place for years so I might be a little bias, but I love it. Totally laid back and chill place. Staff is always super nice and friendly. Menu is basic, but food is good. Get the wings ... I have yet to find wings anywhere else I like half as much. The chili dog with Cincinnati chili is great too. I don't go there for gourmet food, I go there for chili, wings, and cold beer and they don't disappoint.
(5)

The best chicken wings in the greater DC area. And that is a fact. They're definitely known for their chili, which is very good. In fact all of their food is good. But I'm telling you, don't come here without trying the wings. They also have a pretty great selection of brews. The service is never anything great, especially if they're busy. But it will suffice. With good food at pretty great prices, this is a nice casual place to relax and enjoy a few beers.

We came back to Bethesda and after a long day of airports and shuttles and checking in, I knew just what sounded good: an ice cold beer and some greasy cheesy comfort food. We walk down to Hard Times, get seated right away, and try a pitcher of a beer I've never heard of. As we all know vacation calories are magical, they don't count. So, I ordered a big veggie burger with lots of BBQ and onions, with a side of fries, and ate the whole damn thing. I stumbled back to the hotel in a carb coma, not regretting a single bite.

I genuinely wanted to like this place - I have been to other Hard Times and know I like the combo of relaxed atmosphere, hearty food, and good beer - but the Bethesda location is so below their other spots - the furnishings are falling apart (had to change tables several times), the wait staff was less than attentive, and the quality of the food does not match up to the chain's standards - it honestly seemed like no one cared - sad - with the multitude of options available in Bethesda, I definitely will NOT BE BACK

I LOVE Hard Times. I love it for what it is (and has been for almost fifteen years) - a neighborhood chili joint. For me - that means a relaxed place to hang out on Sundays drinking seasonally appropriate craft beers, eating great wings and or chili, and watching football (or whatever) with friends. Frequently you will find a dining room full of families, groups of friends, and quite a few regulars in the dining room and at the bar. The staff is friendly in a very relaxed and welcoming way, and the menu has lots of different options for any appetite. My favorite chili is the Terlingua (sp?) Red. It is a moderately spicy tomato based chili that (for me) beats out the Cincinnati and the Texas because it is the best of both worlds. The Cinci is tomato based as well, but a tad on the sweeter side (YES that is cinnamon you taste!). The Texas is spicy too, but not tomato based - this makes for a greasier chili, which some people love (you can even order it "All the way wet" which will get you an extra ladle of the greasy goodness). **There is also a vegetarian chili that I hear is great, but I have never tried it... Too much of a meat-eater perhaps** You can get your favorite chili over pasta, beans, tater tots, cornbread (or a combination thereof), and choose your toppings (cheese, onions, chopped tomatoes, jalapenos, sour cream... you get the idea)... The chili comes just the way YOU like it! The burgers and other grill items are great too. (The burger is key when you have had a few-too-many the night before!). There are other standout dishes on the menu besides the chili, but I will leave you to explore them. Bring a relaxed attitude and a healthy appetite - you will not be disappointed.

This place is really nothing special. The chili is pretty much whatever. I did rather enjoy the wings but that was pretty much the only redeeming quality. I'm pretty sure that the waiter type person was a sexual offender, minus the pedophile beard and rapist glasses. 1 star for it actually being food and 1 star for the flame that undoubtedly shot out of my ass later on that night.

I usually hit up the Hard Times in Old Town but the one in Bethesda is close to some family so we decided to head over for a quick, late night dinner. The wings were great as usual and our burgers were very good but the fries were something to be desired - soggy and bland. Our waitress was a little out of it - I asked her for Ranch dressing for the wings and she never brought it. I was going to remind her but by that time there was one wing left so I just let it go. Also, the menu indicates that there are supposed to be 12 wings to an order (originally 10 but that was crossed out on every menu and replaced with 12) and we only got 10. Not that huge of a deal but it's those little missed details that get on my nerves. We always have great service as the HT in Old Town...think I'll stick to that one from now on.

love hard times! amazing chili, fries, wings, nachos, and onion rings. Its not a hearty or spicy chili but the Texas is fine beef, flavorful, delicious, and horrible for you, in a good way! throw on some pasta, cheese, and jalapenos you got an awesome meal! they have really cheap wings on Wednesday and they are unlike any other. they bake, fry, and grill them... awesome. smoky yet traditional buffalo flavor on a meaty wing with an amazing char. definitely check it out.
(4)

food is good like at other hard times but the atmosphere in this one is like going to hooters you feel a bit dirty and it smells like a cafeteria oh well.

when the food was piping hot, it was good enough... but then it cooled down and it was very average. The nachos are ok but nothing to write home about, the original grilled wings were actually pretty good, and my chili half smoke was an insult to half smokes (nothing compared to ben's). they have a bunch of 25in tube tvs that you can watch various sporting events on, but i wouldnt come here to watch the games (pretty sure they dont have directv) and the service, while friendly, was pretty inept; they messed up our order three times, though they did comp us on the bill. would i go back? i guess.... but not anytime soon.

I used to come here quite often for their Wednesday wing night. The waitstaff is hit or miss. Some of the waiters are on the ball and pretty snappy at getting your order. Some of the others either take awhile serving you or forget parts of your order. There was one cute waitress who we tried to get whenever we were there that did a really good job. I've eaten here probably about 15 times and the food has been good and bad. Often times I am ordering the same thing, wings. On a good day the wings are great. On a bad day they serve you wings that have clearly either been sitting out for awhile or have been microwaved. I stopped coming here when I got two bad days in a row.

Serves every type of food you'd expect from a bar (wings burger chili), just in a sub par fashion. Nothing is flavorful and everything contains about a pint of oil. I'd suggest a couple drinks before trying the food here - maybe that will soften the blow...or at least cut through some of the grease....

As I sit here typing this, I can't help but still smell the amazing scent coming from my hands. It's from the Texas grilled wings, and it is AWESOME. I've even washed my hands three times, and it still continues to tantalize me. The food's great - especially the wings. I also usually enjoy either the Chili Mac or the Frito Chile Pie, both with Cincinati style chile. The burgers are great. "So why's this dude only giving it three stars?" you ask. The service. Now, it's not really fair for me to point fingers, because I'm not sure where the system breaks down. But typically, we're sitting there way, way, way too long for something like spaghetti noodles with chili dished out on top. On our two most recent visits, our order has been lost, but magically appears not long after we point out that we've been waiting on appetizers for 45 minutes. They're pleasant folks who have made amends for the service issues. And it shouldn't be a reason for you to not go there. Seriously, the food is really, really good. Just make sure you remind your server every few minutes, otherwise you might end up spending the afternoon there.

(5)Izzat A.

(4)Pat G.
Best darn wings and the Texas 5 way is the best ever. Coldest beer possible. Good price.
(5)sophie S.
(3)Steve M.
(1)Chris T.
For what they do they do well. The food is consistently good and the service is on the level. For those that don't like a bar restaurant atmosphere look elsewhere, but for the average guy looking for a good belly full. Get to it, hard to find better.
(4)John H.
(5)Kathy S.
(3)David E.
(3)Tom D.
(1)Bruno C.
we love the fact that at Hard Times, you can add chili to just about anything. It's cheap, it's greasy, it's messy, but when you are hung over...it's the best thing in town.
(3)Justin W.
(2)Jeffrey A.
(2)Ray M.
Just got out of 'happy hour' paid ~$13 out the door for four sliders, two beers. Not a bad deal but not spectacular either. Good beer selection.
(3)Kelly B.
My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and got great service. We really liked the Texas wings. The chili sampler was good, however the chili didn't taste as flavorful over the spaghetti. Next time we'll try the chili by itself. The guys there work hard!
(3)shawn d.
about a dozen or so microbrews at any given time and four kinds of chili. vegetarian chilimac with jalepenos and a dogfish head 90 minute ipa. enough said.
(4)PC W.
(3)Michael F.
(5)Hua X.
(4)Ann J.
(3)TK B.

(3)Jordy G.
(3)Mandolin G.
I love the Texas and Cincinnati Chili mixed together on just about anything.
(5)Joshua S.
(2)Michael T.
(4)Jim L.
(4)Rich G.
(5)Colin F.
(5)Mike H.

The chilli here is the best. They don't use any beans, which is the right way to make chilli. My favorite is the Texas chilli which is smoky and meaty.
(5)Chris J.

(5)J C.

Just had a meal at Hardtimes Café with my wife and two children first I found the men's bathroom to be not so clean! Then we ordered our food appetizer first their special was boneless barbecue wings we found the appetizer to be very tasty and cooked well. After that the meal went downhill, my wife ordered chicken tacos my children ordered cheeseburgers and I have the chicken barbecue. It took a long time for the food to come out and when it did the children's cheeseburgers where lukewarm with unmelted cheese on top. My hickory barbecue chicken sandwich was lukewarm with a unmelted cheeses well. My wife's chicken tacos also had cold chicken on it as well. The chicken looked and tasted like it was frozen then microwaved and placed on the grill for a few minutes just to heat it! The server was kind and asked the manager to come to our table with the manager came over he apologized his excuse was the kitchen was backed up even though not all of the tables had customers and then offered to take 50% off the bill rather offering to remake my chicken tacos which he claimed coul take a long time to redo

(2)E U.
The best chili ever. Get it however you want. Tomatoes, rice, cheese, onions, beans - you name it. Great service too. Boneless wings are simply the greatest. It's become a regular place for our family. Plus tons of TV's to watch sports.
(5)Bubble Boy B.
Dollar beers all night, solid wings, dicey and dive atmosphere. Nice change in The Thesda.
(4)Nicole G.
So I really like the food here and have been a couple times but last time I went for lunch I unfortunately got sick afterward. As much as I love their chili mac I think I'm turned off, for now at least :/
(3)Glenn D.
Great Chilli and Burger Hangout! You have try the chilli. They give you a free sampler to help you with your choices. We had the chilli dog and chilli tators which were really good! Alexa was awesome and Greg the owner gave us newcomers a warm welcome!
(5)Tara L.

(3)Seth S.
(4)Scott S.
(4)Diana M.
Great prices, THE BEST WINGS IN THE AREA. Ask for the grilled wings, you won't be disappointed, especially if you see a really old guy cooking behind the bar. Big local hangout. The Bethesda location is the best, the others are not so reliable.
(5)Amanda N.
Love the happy hours here!! Great deals and super cheap (especially if you are ordering food for a group of people and splitting the bill). Love the wings but I just wish they weren't as salty. The chili nachos are also very good, especially the Texas Chili. I come here all the time for happy hour.
(3)Angela R.
Hard Times is my go to restaurant, whichever location. The wings are the bomb. Ask for them burnt, they grill them so they are not so sloppy and even more tasty, if that were possible. Bethesda service is not so good on Saturdays but the food is still good.
(5)Alicia G.
Eh*. *As I sit here and ponder how to review HTC, that's all I could think of. My meal was satisfying in an-OMG-did-I-really-just-eat-all-of-that-greasy-Âbar-food-kind-of-way but not memorable enough to return anytime soon.
(2)Justin L.
(5)Steven B.
(4)Brandy P.
I decided to visit one night because I was craving fried pickles, I ended up ordering the pickles and the bacon cheeseburger. I loved the pickles, I wasn't impressed with the burger, the meat had not flavor on its own. IIt was extremely noisy that night. Not a place to chill.
(3)Jessica M.
Filthy and the food smelled really, really off. The meat did not smell right, my hot dog bun was stale, the place was very unclean. Not once did I see anyone wash their hands or clean anything. I'm big on sanitation, and this place was seriously lacking it.
(1)Peter K.
(4)Douglas B.
chili bubba.
(5)Stephanie S W.
(3)Jill M.
(5)Michael L.
Simply the best wings. Texas style, finished on the grill. Vegetarian chili is wonderfully seasoned...... Bar food done right! One other cool thing..... The owners support local charities and causes. I will definitely be back. Again and again.
(5)Bonnie W.
Nice joint.
(3)Beneeta D.
(2)alan P.
I met a group of friends here this afternoon(Sunday) and we had a great time. Staff was very helpful and friendly and the wings are pretty good too.
(3)Arnie K.
(4)Frank R.
(4)Courtney B.
(5)Michael M.
(4)OIivia H.
(5)David C.
I genuinely wanted to like this place - I have been to other Hard Times and know I like the combo of relaxed atmosphere, hearty food, and good beer - but the Bethesda location is so below their other spots - the furnishings are falling apart (had to change tables several times), the wait staff was less than attentive, and the quality of the food does not match up to the chain's standards - it honestly seemed like no one cared - sad - with the multitude of options available in Bethesda, I definitely will NOT BE BACK
(1)Hilary R.
(4)N S.
(2)Karis K.
(3)Chris B.
love hard times! amazing chili, fries, wings, nachos, and onion rings.
(4)Seth M.
food is good like at other hard times but the atmosphere in this one is like going to hooters you feel a bit dirty and it smells like a cafeteria oh well.
(3)Marc H.
when the food was piping hot, it was good enough... but then it cooled down and it was very average.
(2)Adam H.
(2)Cy K.
Serves every type of food you'd expect from a bar (wings burger chili), just in a sub par fashion. Nothing is flavorful and everything contains about a pint of oil. I'd suggest a couple drinks before trying the food here - maybe that will soften the blow...or at least cut through some of the grease....
(2)Richard N.
Thanks BankAmeriDeals! I had not been in years but when I got a cash back reward offer I jumped at it. It was great - food and service
(4)Christian L.
