Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I'm a fan of this place. I've been twice and will definitely add it to my list of go to spots. I love that this is a neighborhood place. The menu is extensive and not at all expensive. I ordered the fish tacos this visit and shrimp fajitas the first visit. Both meals are good...just what I expected. I recommend this place for a nice relaxed dinner with friends.

I have been here several times with friends . They go quite often because it is in their area , and it has decent food. But even they agree the service is terrible . I used to wait tables , and worked counter service and even at the busiest of times , I was probably more efficient than this places staff. We arrived for an early dinner sound 5pm, and the restaurant was fairly empty. A handful of people at the bar, and maybe 3 other tables of people in the joint. We had to wait for refills of our drinks for over 10 minutes, and the bartender brought over my friends beer 15 minutes after he ordered it.... Inexcusable . The staff here seem to think customers are an inconvenience , and would rather watch tv, or finish a conversation they are having, before actually doing work . Like I said before, the food was decent, but nothing I couldn't find at a Baja Fresh. If I wanted real authentic Mexican I will stick with Tijuana Tacos in Patterson Park .

Zen West is located across form Belvedere Square on York Road. We came in on a lazy Sunday while we were waiting for a movie at the Senator. They have a great draft beer selection, and apparently they have different draft and beer specials each day of the week. They also have Boh specials during O's games, and one was going on while we were there but my wife was happy to find a Summer Shandy on draft so she stuck with that. They serve Mexican food and also have a great breakfast menu. It was tempting to get a stack of Waffles or Juevos Rancheros, but we were worried it might be too much food. I was pleased to see that their tacos can be ordered with either soft or crispy tortillas, but we both ordered from the sandwich section. I ordered an Avacado and Cheese sandwich, which came on artisan bread and was the perfect amount of food for a light lunch. My wife ordered a Jalapeno Bacon BLT, and while the fried egg she asked to be included came scrambled, it did make it easy to eat and that spicy bacon was super hot and out of this world. The crispy fries that came with our sandwiches were perfect as well. I should note that the salsa they serve with the complimentary chips is also very spicy, something that can be tough to find in this area. The place is decorated warmly with wood, pennants on streamers, license plates, and a wonderful display of old pinball games. It really does have a great vibe of a roadside cantina in a dusty western town. Between the beer, the food, and the atmosphere, I may have a new favorite spot.

Flavorful but not the best. I LOVE Mexican food - it's my favorite cuisine. I also understand there are a few varieties - Mexican-American, Authentic, etc. This place definitely falls into the Tex-Mex category. We went during lunch during the week and it wasn't crowded. I loved the ambiance - a few windows were open, they had fun stuff on the walls, I felt like I was on vacation (or maybe that's because it was a beautiful spring day before a long weekend...!) The chips and salsa were free (though you only get one complimentary). The salsa had a kick to it and tasted fresh. They had a TON of options - tacos, burritos (and bowls), flautas, enchiladas, fajitas, sandwiches, and staple Tex-Mex entrees. I went with the carne asada. It's typically served with mashed potatoes but I'm trying to avoid carbs so I went without them. The food came out... Well, we waited a little while. For it not being busy I was surprised it took as long as it did. The steak had a lot of flavor, but it wasn't the best quality. The broccoli was plain - which I appreciated. The squash was what set this meal off. It was grilled in big pieces and had some sort of light spicy sauce on it. It was delicious. I didn't realize that fried green beans came with the meal and was irritated that I saw them on my plate because I knew I would eat them... Which I did. And they were delicious! Overall it was a good meal. I'd definitely go back if I was feeling Tex-Mex but I'd like to try something different. Worth stopping by.

The food was good. I love the warm chips and salsa. We did get a chip refill. However, this is a tequila bar and I went for the tequila. My drinks were sub par and I really did not get enough from 2 shots to even be buzzed. I know my system and 2 shots of Casa Noble should have left me feeling pretty good. Instead I feel ripped off. Our first visit, I was thrilled to find my tequila somewhere other than Johnny Sanchez. However, what we received in May (a 2 oz shot) and what I received tonight were from different planets. My first drink on the rocks was about an ounce. My second drink was less than an ounce - again on the rocks. At $8 per shot, a little more is in order. I will go back and let my third visit determine if Zen West will remain on my list.

This place would get 5 stars (food and price) If the service was not HORRIBLE!!!! We keep coming back because the chicken burritos are so freakin yummy. Also, Tuesday there is a cheap Yuengling deal 2.50 a pint all night. If you come here be prepared to wait. But the food is good. Also, a good place for brunch if some people want breakfast and other people want Mexican food!! (We have done this) Also, good place to watch the O's game!!
(3)Jude T.
The food was good, overall. My girlfriend ordered the avocado and cheese sandwich, which she found fantastic. I got the chicken sandwich, which I found pretty good. The chicken itself seemed like a frozen patty, as it was very much pressed chicken. The cheese, bacon, toppings and roll were A+, though. For an appetizer, we got the empanadas, which were fantastic! They were crispy, hot (literally steaming when bitten into - I'm posting a photo of it!), and served with two delicious sauces. The free chips and salsa were also good - though the salsa might be a bit spicy for some. Definitely wait to eat some until you get a drink. Now, as for actual issues: 1. We never got silverware and napkins and had to get it ourselves from a bucket behind us after we were eating the empanadas and getting stuff all over our fingers. 2. We paid our $28 check with a $20 and a $10 and our server just kept the change without asking and without us telling her to keep it. We waited five minutes while she cleared other tables and waited on a new table and finally she came over and asked us, "Oh, sorry, did you want your change back?" Well, yes, yes we did... And you screwed yourself out of an actual decent tip with your assumption because that was now your tip instead of that plus the rest of the $1s we had on us, which would've been closer an $7 or $8 tip.
(3)Kerri M.
The food here is not good. They didn't want to bring us a refill on the salsa either, which is my favorite part of faux Mexican eatings. The service here is alright. I do like the atmosphere of this place, I just wish they had better food.
(2)Seth G.
Their brunch is always a good start to your Sunday. Big fan of the bottomless mimosa, that went great with the breakfast burrito I had. The service was great and friendly.
(3)Connor S.
If you are into loud bars full of drunk frat boys... then, this is your spot. This is just not my crowd. The food was only mediocre, and the service was lacking. I won't be returning.
(2)Dan S.
Good food and drinks, and a friendly staff, but 1 star until they add changing tables to the huge bathrooms. Either get rid of the high chairs and stop inviting families, or get some changing tables. No excuses, Zen.
(1)Alex c.
I've been here a few times and really hoped it would be better each time. I like to come for drinks and dinner but most the time the staff is to busy with their drinks and dinner. I've never been somewhere with such a lack of management. It's as if the employees have no boss and just kind of say screw it, I don't feel like doing anything. At night most of the employees are drinking and once they are off work they become the loudest and drunkest people there! They pretty much take over and make anyone else feel uncomfortable. Once I realized how poorly managed the place is, I wasn't shocked when I started seeing cock roaches here and there. The staff does not seem like the type that takes pride in keeping the restaurant clean. It used to be a nice place but now it's just turned into a typical college bar that could care less.
(1)Curtis L.
Wings are awesome. Nachos are very good too. Great daily happy hour specials. The service is always excellent when I come here, so i am surprised about the complaints. There are plenty of TVs that always have the orioles on. Come here, order the wings and get a margarita and you'll be happy guaranteed.
(5)Brittany C.
omg...their grilled wings are to die for. Everything else is typical tex mex but their wings are just so out of this world that it doesn't matter about anything else.
(4)Shawneen P.
After a long day of tubing, everyone was simultaneously starved and exhausted. We decided on Zen West because of proximity and what was touted as all-you-can-eat chips and salsa (which, of course, is no longer something they do, FYI). Unlike other reviews, service was quick and generally good; food - not so much. I ordered the shrimp tacos, which were pretty mediocre. The style of food is some kind of americanized-marylandized Mexican. Salsa was pretty mild, thus prompting us to add that electric green hot sauce that only the most americanized of all americanized mexican restaurants seem to have. The one that looks like it's glowing. From now on, whenever I see that bright green hue, I should take it as sign to head somewhere else.
(2)Jess B.
Would you like a bud light or miller light because we are out of everything. Zen west is such a waste of prime space.
(1)John B.
My experience at zen west was extremely disappointing. We sat outside and waited over 20 minutes for water on a 93 degree day. The chips and salsa were good, guacamole was basic and did not taste fresh. We ordered steak fajitas and a taco salad, the fajitas were brought to us in a reasonable amount of time, but without any plates or silverware. The taco salad was forgotten, but it is probably better off that way. We had to wait another 5+ minutes to get plates, at which point our fajitas did not appear appetizing. We tried them and they were mediocre at best. I will also mention that our plates, when brought to us, were dirty. We spoke with a manger and walked out after hardly touching our food.
(1)Tiffany H.
I been here twice with my sister, good experience both times. Service is good and food is better. Every thing I order is good and the drinks creep up on you(small girl). Anyway if you live close and want something Different try this place.
(5)Jim M.
Solid Mexican in a place that has very little options. Great for kids and a fun atmosphere. Service tries hard but is a tad slow. Great for watching the game or quick mid-week dinner out with the kids.
(4)Michael H.
I loved restaurant and the bar scene.
(4)Max R.
I recommend the steak tacos, chicken wings and the margaritas. Everything else is very average. Service is ok at best. However very friendly.
(3)Nicki M.
I love "chips & salsa & cheese" so much I made a jingle about it. So Tex-Mex is a personal favorite. Zen West is ok. I'll go back since it's close to work. But I wasn't in love with anything there. Everything on my plate tasted the same and nothing was "wow amazing." Great margaritas though. Kind staff too.
(2)John R.
My cheese enchiladas arrived cold despite warnings of a hot plate. Obviously microwaved. The salsa was the worst I have ever tasted. The beer was cold but over priced. Wife's chicken was dry as was the rice.
(2)Sarah G.
Zen West leads a double life. Tex-Mex style restaurant during the day and college student stomping grounds at night. During the restaurant time, it has pretty standard Mexican fare with some burgers and things thrown into the mix. My enchiladas had good flavor but were so dry that it was a disappointment. But the guac is addictive! I probably could have gone without the enchiladas and just had our waitress keep bringing out the complimentary tortilla chips because that bowl of guacamole seemed never-ending and I was ok with that. I would have liked to try the margarita but I had to go to work after this soooo can't pregame that! Then the nighttime. Cue the lights on the dance floor, bring in the hundreds of college students, and throw some bud light in the mix and you've got yourself Zen West at night. Although I was pleased that unlike many college bars, they had some hard cider options for my beer opposed taste buds.

It's not that the food here is particularly bad, it's just not that memorable. Seriously, my husband and I ate here the other day and I could not for the life of me remember what I've ordered here in the past. Sadly, neither could he. The only thing that came to mind was their nacho appetizer - not the crazy ones with all the toppings, just the simple, old school ones with layers of refried beans, melted cheese and a jalapeno. But according to their menu now, beans are optional - so opt for the refried ones. So here's my take on the food before I again forget our entrees. I had the chalupa salad. I appreciated the size of the dish, plus the use of bright green romaine and generous helping of diced chicken. I was, however, put off slightly by the shriveled up dozen or so kernels of corn and dry black beans. The chipotle ranch dressing was unnecessary because it lacked any flavor whatsoever; thankfully enough all the other pieces together made up for it. The entire time I ate it I was wishing it were a tasty taco salad from Qdoba. My husband had the platter with two enchiladas, a tamale and a hard taco. The enchiladas were doable, but very much on the small side. He had no complaints on the taco, but the tamale was drier then it could or should be. We unfortunately can't comment on dessert - our server didn't even give us the opportunity to order some. Once she saw that we were finished eating, she told us she'd bring our check immediately over. That kind of sealed the deal for us - forgettable food + iffy service = not a place to frequent more than once a year, if that.
(2)Doug G.
Great entrees! Unfortunately, not the best part of town -- and only has street parking.
(4)Khadijah S.
I've been here twice and don't know why. The guacamole, margaritas, and tacos were all disappointments. These are basic things a tex mex restaurant should know how to do well or at least ok.
(2)Sam B.
Went tonight for Cinco De Mayo. Service and atmosphere are good, but food not so great. I think the food don't seem fresh and hot like it should be. It was room temperature and lacked that delicious feeling. The deserts were ok. I realize it was a busy night, but they had NO limes, NO coffee, NO decaf....come'on. Really? Please do better and I'll be back!!
(2)Jen M.
On the edge of the Belvedere Square development in north Baltimore (or 'yuppie market' as we refer to it), this Tex-Mex spot isn't a bad place to grab a pint, and the service can be decent, but the overall feel is "meh". The atmosphere just seems to be trying too hard; from the Route 66 murals to the pinball machine art the decor is a bit all over the place. We waited too long for our service in an almost empty bar, the con queso and salsa tasted like they were out of a jar, and the cigarette smoke from the group of regulars out front kept wafting in (hey team lung cancer, walk four feet away from the entrance please). On the plus side, the beer was cold and the servers were nice (if a bit slow). In a pinch this spot may work for some. I'll give it another shot to try some of the other food selections at some point. Maybe.
(2)Mindy M.
Got to go back again recently: 1. Margarita was good 2. Service was a whole lot better!!!! YAH!! and we sat outside again with our dog. 3. They had tamales this time. They were chicken and really good! I still think Garibaldi's is better, but these were good. Just a heads up though, you only get 2 per order and they are on the small side. 4. Got the hard shell beef tacos again- they were more moist this time, but they had NO seasoning! What's up with that?? Sadly, I think next time I'm going to skip ordering them :(
(2)Robert R.
Dark and dingy. Service is ok. Food leaves something to be desired. Ingredients aren't fresh.
(2)Kirstin B.
I decided to write a review because I am genuinely surprised at some of the negative reviews of this place. I've been here twice with a large group and everyone loved their food. I found the menu to be very vegetarian friendly, beyond just the typical rice and beans. I'll be back for the vegetarian reuben and the nachos. Update: I've been back and the food is still good, but I found it to be a little on the oily side. Still love the traditional nachos though.
(4)Joel A.
I was served uncooked food. Since it was a to go order, I didn't know it til I got home. When I called I was told to call tomorrow to speak to the manager. I filed a complaint with the city health department.
(1)Daisy K.
Slow service with a 1/4 seated restaurant. Ordered flautas and it tasted like card board. My beans tasted fermented. At least the margarita mix costs 4 dollars a medium size glass.
(1)Kelly B.
Ok let me start off by saying I've been here before an liked it but I went in this Saturday with Family (I brought them in to try the place because I liked it) and it was terrible. Our waiter was awful. We sat down the only ones in the section at first and it took forever to get drinks, order, ect. He brought the wrong thing to our table twice. We saw our food sitting on the heat rack forever. When we got our food my husband and father in-law both ordered enchiladas. They got two completely different things. My F.I.L. got what can only be described as 3 Taquitos and my husband got 2 Taquitos wrapped in a soft shell with sauce on it. That is not an enchilada! By then we were just happy to have something to eat so we ate waited 30 mins for our check and then left. I prob won't be back and it's a shame too because I usually like this place.
(1)Robert B.
Stopped here for lunch after helping a friend move into the area. He suggested the place and we went. The restaurant has a honky-tonk but friendly feel and the waitress we had was friendly. The food, however, definitely has that Tex-Mex made by someone who doesn't know what Tex-Mex is feel. That's not a slam by any means, but rather that it had the trappings of it but was all over the place instead of focusing on their core. Can't say I plan to eat there again; this was a one-off, but it's a decent place and I'd say give it a shot. Just don't expect to be wowed.
(3)Christa H.
Zen West is my go to Mexican restaurant. Love the following menu items: shrimp tacos, seafood quesadilla, chicken enchilada and guacamole! Amazing happy hour prices and daily specials. Always feel welcome when entering. Only drawback is parking especially now that The Senator Theatre is open again. One of my favorite weekend stops!
(4)Lauren S.
The first time I came here, I had some delicious mixed drinks before a movie. I can safely say the bartenders really know how to mix alcohol well. The food however, not so much. I tried a empanada with chicken and potato, two things I enjoy very much. This item was a total let down. Tasted like something I could make in my microwave. The quac was really good though. Very fresh, I should have eaten that and chips.
(3)Mark S.
It's 3:13AM and I'm writing a yelp review because there isn't a website that I can find right now to report FOOD POISONING in Baltimore City. I've lived here in Belvedere Square since 2007. Been to Zen West probably, literally about 40 times. I used to like it, but I had a bad piece of chicken in the Zen West Chicken sandwich last night and I'm paying for it right now. I noticed it seemed really bad about halfway through. This comes after a trip to the restaurant about three weeks ago when my wife sent her chicken quesedilla back and I didn't eat the chicken tacos I'd ordered. As a property owner in Belvedere Square, which is trying to establish itself as a 'cool place to grab a bite' and catch a flick at the renovated senator, I'm am absolutely ticked off! I will be paying Zen a visit in person tomorrow to tell them in person (assuming I can stomach it) and I will find the number to report them. It pains me to recommend staying far away from this joint until they somehow show people that they've got their act together. However, I'm not going to be the one to find out if they've fixed the problems. I'm pretty sure I'm done with this place! ... gotta go throw up now.
(1)Paul T.
I was torn when writing this review (maybe if I were fully ripped it would've been better! *rimshot*), because Zen West is a bit of a dichotomy. I've come in on some nice summer nights when they've had the place opened up, and have had a nice time drinking some beers, eating some nachos and people-watching. The problem is, summer only lasts one season, and sometimes you need more than nachos. It seems like the food at Zen west has really gone downhill in a big way, and that's a problem considering that they started at unremarkably average. It used to be that you could get a burrito of the stop-the-hunger-and-not-kill-you variety, but now I'm agnostic about even that. The last straw for me happened recently when my wife and I dropped in for a couple drinks. Feeling a bit peckish, she went for a cup of chili and I some nachos. I could tell something was wrong by the moue on my wife's face after having tried her first bite of chili. "Something wrong with the chili?" Inquired I. "Have a go and tell me" she said, little droplets of an apologetic red fluid dripping from the spoon she extended to me. My thought as I put the spoon in my mouth was one of reflection: who the hell serves chili with a tea spoon? This thought never came to fruition, however, because all other consciousness was wiped out by HOLYSWEETGODANDSONNYJESUS SAAAAALLLTTTT!!!! I swear, I have never had that much concentrated salt in my life. My tongue immediately took on the appearance and, presumably, the flavor of the bottom of Ghandi's sandal. So there I sat, useless shrivelled little black clam neck of a tongue hanging from my mouth, and peered into the bowl to inspect this "chili" my wife had been fed. It was a viscuous, oily slurry of tomato base and meat that had been so wretchedly abused as to have been reduced to its component fibers. A search for onion, anything, was rewarded with tiny diced-up pieces of raw onion that appeared to all the world to be the same as would be used in salsa. This realization gave me the clarity to take a step back and reassess the whole dish: was this chili hot dog topping they were trying to pass off as "chili rustica"? Really? And not even good chili hot dog topping, at that? Props to the server who, as soon as we pointed out the abject violation seething in our bowl, immediately took it off the bill. Still, though, it was too little too late, and the last, weak link in a decidedly ugly chain.
(2)Damian B.
Good atmosphere. Great service. Good mexican food. The drinks are expensive however there is a good happy hour selection. would recommend for a date. I wouldnt take a girl here to impress her but i would take her here if i wanted to appear hype....
(3)Jeffrey H.
I've eaten at Zen West maybe 8 times over the last 6 months. I was surprised to see some of the reviews. They slow cook their own brisket, beans and bbq and almost everything on the menu is made there. The meats cooked on site and are moist and full of flavor. Some of these reviews have to be from competitive restaurants from the area because the food is good and portions are very large. The Margaritas are above average and they must have 40 tequilas at the very catchy bar. Fish tacos are very good, guacamole is chunky-homemade, and the warm chips and homemade salsa is excellent. On all our visits with friends, everyone liked the food and enjoyed hanging out. The service was friendly and informal.

JS took JR here, hoping it would satisfy the mexican food cravings that were jilted by the crap food at Holy Frijoles. JR heroically negotiated a change of tables so I did not have to freeze sitting by a poorly sealed window in the front. Unfortunately, we would up with a waitress who seemed to have little knowledge of the beers on tap or anything related to the bar; it all worked out fine, but it did take a while longer to order drinks with her having to run and ask the bartender for information about the standard brews on tap. The house margarita was too syrupy and the size was not commensurate with the price. The food was ready very quickly, leading to a strong suspicion that there was little made to order effort in the kitchen. The chicken tacos were tasty, but nothing mind blowing. JR had the purple pig, a pulled pork sandwich. JR liked the fries it was served with and thought the sandwich was tasty. The upside is that the bar seemed to be hopping. I think if we were to go here again, saddling up to the bar would be the way to go.
(2)Steve K.
Below average Mexican joint. Think Don Pablo's and you won't be far off. Only saving grace is the free chips and salsa, which are good. Fajitas are not, the meat is dry and tasteless and the peppers and onions are sizzled to a crisp. Quesadillas - also dry and way too thick.
(2)Marcie P.
My initiation to Zen West was prompted by a friend who described it as a "Mexican restaurant." Therefore, you can understand my confusion at the sports bar-like ambience and the Route 66 mural looming over the dining area. Turns out that the cuisine itself is vying for Tex-Mex or Southwestern (ie. an American imitation of Mexican food.) Either way, it's bound to appeal to my palate, or so I thought. The food was just barely average. Nothing gross, but it was unimaginative and altogether bland. Feckless cooks could probably imitate these dishes by throwing together some pre-packaged ingredients in their home kitchens. The server was rather indifferent.
(2)Knieci M.
I went around 9:30pm. Bar was packed, so I sat on the patio. Very little hospitality from servers (maybe they were busy) Black raspberry margarita was just ok. Guacamole was pretty good.
(3)Stacey G.
Zen West is a solid, tex mex option. It's not going to blow off your socks unless you have low expectations but it probably won't disappoint you. We've been a couple times now and sadly, I have to say, it's a bit inconsistent. One time was pretty darn good and another time it was still OK but not as good. Guacamole and chips were very good. Prices are good. Atmosphere leaves a little to be desired. Seems like it should always be busier. We avoid Fri and Sat nights, which may explain the empty tables. Service has always been pretty good and beer selection ain't half bad. My standby has been the taquitos. They're tasty and crunchy. Can't go wrong with that.
(3)David S.
Very good for parties! Nice casual bar and food.
(4)Ed D.
For a casual atmosphere for an Orioles game, this place is pretty good. $2 Natty Bohs and $10 fish tacos, each of which are pretty tasty. Salty chips and spicy salsa accompany every meal, which make for a cheap standard with which to drink a few beers or cocktails.
(3)Gaurang M.
The margaritas were excellent. We enjoyed the guacamole but would have preferred a more chunky preparation. The staff was pleasant and made some good recommendations. Overall, I would go back again.
(3)Alyce D.
I was here tonight for a business networking event. Had chips and salsa (YUM!), wings, veggies and quesadillas. The staff was very friendly, the atmosphere was were nice and the food was good! I'd definitely come back for dinner and drinks. I can see where parking might be obnoxious during the day, but after normal business hours, you can park in the bank parking lot without fear of being towed which is nice!
(3)Kimmie D.
LOVE the House Margaritas at Zen West! The complimentary salsa is also the best I've had at a Tex-Mex restaurant anywhere in Baltimore. As for the entrees, they are good, but really nothing special. The chicken enchiladas are probably my favorite entree and are covered in your choice of sauce (ranchero, verde, or mole). The chicken quesadilla is probably the runner up and is definitely plenty of food for a meal. The only thing that I have found the last couple times I have been is the servers are not very attentive. Last time we sat for 15 minutes with no sign of our waitress anywhere and we both wanted more chips, another margarita and a water. By the time we finally saw her again we had both finished our meals and were ready to go...but still craving another margarita! Other than that, no complaints.

Randomly went Friday night to check it out. Great food and great service! Chicken wings were by far the favorite. I really enjoyed my chicken salad (huge!). And my husband loved his tacos. Wasn't overly impressed with the salsa. Not that expensive, either. We will be returning.

Went here last night for the 4th time. And it will be my last. The service was horrible, the manager was RUDE, they screwed up our simple order of quesadillas and tacos, forgot to bring our water, there was a bug on my plate and they were unapologetic about it. Didn't try to make us feel like they wanted our business.

Delicious wings, good house margaritas, good service. Great happy hour deals that we've never taken advantage of due to timing, but plan to. House margaritas are decent and well priced, though premium ones have a bit of a steep markup. Salsas are better than some of the area's other local Mexican places. Fajitas are nothing earth shattering, but are tasty. The wings are definitely the way to go. Service is always attentive and friendly, waits are never long but the place always seems relatively well-liked.
(4)Katie R.
Decidedly ok. Nothing more though, as the food was acceptably tasty. The service was...ok I guess, though the hostess seated us in the dark near the bathrooms with other tables open, so we moved. Chips and salsa were above average. Margarita was average. I had enchiladas, which were ok but a bit dry. Mole sauce was not bad, but nothing exceptional or supremely authentic. I can't really see the love... I doubt it'll enter into my rotation, even with Mexican and Mexican-ish offerings in Baltimore being quite thin. Chefs and staff did know what gluten was, and were able to make sure my meal was gluten free, which is always a big plus!

Service is pretty good. They have the best steak fajitas in the Towson area. I haven't tried much else. Chips/salsa and drinks were all good.
(5)Jon Q.
I'm a regular and happy to give ZW 2 thumbs up! Consistent above average service and food, reasonable prices and excellent brews on tap. The poured concrete bar surface is neato. I did experience some less than stellar service a few years ago but it was from the same entitled and clearly irritated that her parents forced her to work Towson U. student that's apparently been sent home to live in her parents basement. Check out the shrimp or fish tacos and the catfish platter. The wings are the best around although you only get eight - how about 10 for $8.95? Ask for guacamole with your chips and salsa-it's a great way to start your meal. Check it out Zen West now cause this place will be slammed when the Senator Theater re-opens.

You won't find the path to culinary enlightenment at Zen West. You quickly come to inevitable conclusion that the owners from neighboring Cafe Zen should stick to their asian menu and steer clear of tex mex. The yin and yang of the two restaurants is Zen West has decent atmosphere where Cafe Zen has none. Vice versa for the food. Zen West's restaurant consultants outdid themselves with the shiner bock and route 66 memoribilia. Multiple windows open to create a handsome open space in warm weather. Buddha and salsa intersect with cold mexican beers and mediocre food. Wings, chips, guac, and nachos are good. Skip the tex mex entrees and stick with a burger. After margaritas, you'll forgive the food and continue down the road to neighborhood bar nirvana.

Good margaritas and beer selection (should put Sierra back on draft) and I really like the fresh salsa and chips. Zen West is one of the few Tex-Mex places in Baltimore that I actually enjoy. Located in the neat little Belvedere Square neighborhood north of the city, Zen West has pretty solid tacos, good beans, and excellent guacamole. But their showcase dish -- and my favorite meal -- is the brisket. It's almost melt-in-your-mouth good. Not the kind of thing you'd really expect from a cheeky little Tex-Mex place decorated like a Route 66 diner, but amazing nonetheless. I can't comment on the margaritas but my fiancee tells me they're good. As City Paper notes in their review, they "hit the roadside diner theme pretty hard," and they could use the open space in the restaurant to make it a bit more lively, but as it stands now, its a nice quiet place to have a really good meal.

One of my more casual favorites. This place sold me on the nachos and margaritas. Which for a tex mex restaurant doesn't sound like much but I've never been someplace that does nachos like these folks. They turn each individual chip into a nacho itself! So every bite is a complete nacho! Ingenious! Their frozen margaritas are cheap but don't taste it. The only special margarita I had there I didn't care for was the Pink Taco. The service is up and down. Most of the time is great but one time I went there and the waitress could definitely have done with a personality makeover. She served us drink suspiciously, made everyone in my party feel awkward and messed up something with everyone's meal. She said she was a security guard and this was just part time work for her. She should probably stick with security, she has the personality for it. All in all, service and pink tacos aside, LOVE this place!

My wife and I decided to get brunch here on a Sunday. It was below fair. IT WAS AWFUL! The place was completely empty. My wife's "Southwest Breakfast" was basically coagulated cheese whiz (was this an attempt at southwestern rarebit??) on texas toast with two dry scrambled eggs on the side and two pieces of bacon that looked like they were purchased pre-cooked for an astronaut or something.. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros. Now, I have enjoyed Huevos Rancheros at over 100 restaurants in at least four countries. The ones served here were sad; Stale Ortega-style corn tortilla, dry pinto beans with NO FLAVOR or SEASONING, overcooked egg and sliced, unripe avocado arranged on top. Admittedly it was prettier than it tasted. Salsa was worthless- It was tomato sauce with some onions in there. Coffee was weak and boring. Service was OK. The whole restaurant has a cheesy sports bar ambiance to it. I think the owners are confused. What a mess! NOT RECOMMENDED!

Zen West serves fair-quality food and nice drinks. I love Mexican food and find Zen West to barely make the grade for a Mexican restaurant. Nonetheless, I keep going back because 1) I've adjusted my expectations; 2) The Tex-Mex food quality, while only fair, is consistent; 3) I've learned to order the right stuff- carnitas rancheros and fajitas are usually good choices; 4) It's the best (only?) Mex choice in north-central Bawlmer; and 5) I love their margaritas! I like an excellent margarita, and, while I've certainly had better than those at Zen West, the price is good (especially on Monday), the quality is very consistent and I can always taste the tequila, but it's rarely overwhelming. Side dishes that come with entrees could be more generous. The service is inconsistent, but usually friendly. The atmosphere is great, especially when the televisions are not turned on. (What is it about Baltimore restaurants that they always have TV's in the dining room and they are always on??) Zen West is a good place to go, especially with friends for drinks and snacks.

Normally Zen West is good and was a regular place to visit when going to the Senator Theatre to watch a movie. However, our trip yesterday was disappointing due to HORRIBLE service. In the past we never had a problem, but yesterday was just bad. We were seated promptly and given menus and drinks. When we placed our order, my wife asked if she could get tortilla soup and order a side of 2 tacos without the beans and rice, as it comes as an entree. The waitress could not answer that question and placed the order as the tortilla soup and the entree portion of tacos along with my fish tacos. When the food was served I was given chicken tacos and not fish tacos and the entree tacos, which my wife did not want. The waitress NEVER checked on the order and after presenting the bill NEVER came back to retrieve it. Luckily I am an honest person otherwise we could have easily eaten for free. I don't think I will drive out of my way to eat there again even with a Living Social or Groupon offer. The food was fair, I actually left thinking we should have gone to Baja Fresh and the service was HORRIBLE.

When you enter this place a nostalgic Route 66 and a casual Western Roadhouse atmosphere surround you. We were sat in the large rear dining room that features a long wall mural of a thundering cattle drive rendered by painter Raoul Middleman. The menu carries all the typical Tex-Mex items you'd expect, as well as interesting combination of southern specialties such as chicken-fried steak, blackened catfish and shrimp and grits. We started off with some margaritas, salsa and West Texas Cowboy Nachos-topped with spicy Texas chili, chili con queso, guacamole, sour cream, black olive, pico de gallo and jalapenos ($8.95). They were messy but good. The salsa had some heat but wasn't too hot (they say its never the same each day since they make it themselves). For dinner my husband had the Giant Jason's Belly Buster Burrito- seasoned ground sirloin, roasted corn relish, black beans, jalapenos, topped with chili con queso ($8.95). It was very big and he barely finished it. I didn't taste it but it said it pretty tasty (above average). I had Carnitas Ranchros- Slow-cooked pork marinated in oranges, garlic and other top secret roadhouse spices, sauted with scallions and cilantro, served with flour tortillas, rice & beans, sour cream and pico de gallo ($13.95). This was very good and was up on the top of my list for the best Carnitas. Overall, this place was pretty good- above average but not 5 star. The food is served quick and the wait staff was friendly and attentive. It is very family friendly and welcoming. Next time I would love to sit next to the window during nice weather when they have them open and people watch. This place is a good place for a bite to eat before or after a movie at the Senator Theatre. I will be going back.

Zen West is one of my regular stops. I probably eat there twice a month. It is not true "Mexican" food, but it is certainly OK as far as Tex-Mex goes and blows places like Chilis away. Tortilla chips with salsa to start are always good. The spice in the salsa is highly variable, so some nights it might be too much for some. The enchiladas and tacos are very good. They should consider including three tacos in an order rather than two. The burritos are fine, but not quite up to the level of the enchiladas and tacos. Random samplings of other menu items have rarely left me disappointed. One thing to note: they have among the best chili I have had anywhere outside of Texas/NM. No beans. The way chili was meant to be prepared. It doesn't have as much zip as it could have, but it is easier to add a few drops of hot sauce than it is to pick out the hundreds of beans you find in most cups of chili. The food and drinks are good. The prices are cheap. There is no better alternative in the category within 50 miles.

Zen West has a delicious brunch menu! The items on the brunch menu are $11 and under. They are all delicious! The food portions are large and totally worth your money. They have Mimosas and Bloody Marys for $3 and brunch is on Saturdays and Sundays from like 11am-3pm. It's a Tex-Mex neighborhood restaurant. The service is good and it's an informal atmosphere. I enjoy that sometimes it's not super crowded and I can have a nice conversation over delicious food without being rushed. In the spring and summer, they open the large windows and let the breeze flow through the restaurant. I recommend Zen West for a nice, cheap Tex-Mex brunch.

The chips and salsa are awesome. I usually get the fajitas or the steak burrito. Friendly staff and nice bar area.

Zen West Cafe is a relatively new restaurant in the Belvedere Square neighborhood. I've driven by this place many times and last night decided to stop in with some friends after happy hour. Maybe we should have known there was something amiss when there were only 15 people in this huge space. The hostess and waitress were nice enough, but the food was just not good at all. My $11 fish tacos were pretty dry, not to mention oddly seasoned. Oh, and I only got 2 of them. It's really a shame because Zen West has a huge space in a good neighborhood, but unless they fix their food I imagine it will remain as empty as it was last night.

Good atmosphere. Great service. Good mexican food. The drinks are expensive however there is a good happy hour selection. would recommend for a date. I wouldnt take a girl here to impress her but i would take her here if i wanted to appear hype....

(2)Connor S.
(1)Shawneen P.
(5)Nicki M.
(3)Sam B.
Maybe.

I went around 9:30pm. Bar was packed, so I sat on the patio. Very little hospitality from servers (maybe they were busy) Black raspberry margarita was just ok. Guacamole was pretty good.

I was served uncooked food. Since it was a to go order, I didn't know it til I got home. When I called I was told to call tomorrow to speak to the manager. I filed a complaint with the city health department.

Slow service with a 1/4 seated restaurant. Ordered flautas and it tasted like card board. My beans tasted fermented. At least the margarita mix costs 4 dollars a medium size glass.

(3)Michelle S.

(3)Curtis L.
(4)Jude T.

Dark and dingy. Service is ok. Food leaves something to be desired. Ingredients aren't fresh.

(1)Michelle H.
(4)Paul T.
(2)Khadijah S.
I've been here twice and don't know why. The guacamole, margaritas, and tacos were all disappointments. These are basic things a tex mex restaurant should know how to do well or at least ok.
