I must have been one of the first customers at Trinidad Gourmet. Every time I went to Normals Books, I'd see the new awning across the street and couldn't wait to give it a try on my lunch break. TG turned out to be a great addition to Waverly! Standard Caribbean fare (roti, jerk chicken, oxtail) is affordable and delicious. The veggie roti includes your choice of a few different veggies, all good. If you're really broke, get a chicken or beef patty, and/or "doubles" (a sandwich of sorts made from chickpeas and flatbread)--substantial, tasty, and $1.50 each. I was very happy to discover this when I was living at the poverty level as an AmeriCorps volunteer. The owner and his wife are nice, and he'll happily encourage you to try his homemade mango or tamarind chutney. They did a good job with the renovation, but for the most part this is a take-out place; there are stools and a counter along the front window and one of the walls if you want to sit and eat, but you won't remember this place for the atmosphere. You're better off taking your food home or back to the office.

Food- Oxtail stew (lunch): The oxtail was stewed well (meat fell right off) and very tasty. It was accompanied by a lot of rice (don't know what it's called, but it's long, yellow and seasoned with better/curry probably, yum...), steamed cabbage (tasted just like steamed cabbage) and two other steamed vegetables (see picture) that was just ok. Surrel drink: tasted like a milder version of the Chinese sour plum drink. It was more sweet than sour, which I preferred actually. Very good. Staff: Very friendly Interior/neighborhood: Baltimore, was in a somewhat ghetto area. I will definitely come back again to try their other dishes that's probably impossible to find elsewhere.

Totally unassuming but totally delicious. Asked the delightful proprietor what she recommended and she said the goat roti. Husband got it and enjoyed it quite a bit, mostly for the novelty. But I got the jerk chicken sandwich and practically wolfed it down. The meat was tender and perfectly sweet, but it was the bread that made it beyond delicious. Somewhere between Ethiopian injera and a crepe, it was thick, chewy and fantastic.

Came here on a quick, random visit to Baltimore and was super impressed. The doubles were delicious and perfectly messy. The way the spices were cooked reminded me of pan puri from the streets of Mumbai, and was absolutely perfect for a quick meal. The homemade soda was also quite good, and the guy behind the counter was so friendly and willing to explain the dishes. I would frequent this place if I lived in Baltimore for sure.

go here! the owners are so nice, and they will talk to you. this is the best trini food i have had in the dc/md area. the plantains were perfect, the hottest sauce was so hot and nice. good rice and peas. they had roti, doubles, macaroni pie.... i bought so much food, i ate it, i wanted more. now is this as good as west indian food in ny? maybe not, but for this area it is the best i have found. and trust me, i have been searching

I really enjoy this place and have found that the food is good and the portions are generous. I even hosted a friend's party because she was impressed with the food. The interior is modest, but I was allowed to bring in decor and as always the owner and his wife were welcoming and made all of the guests feel welcome. Our food was great and was brought to the table quickly and was perfect. This is certainly a great place for a relaxed meal for carry-out or for dining in...I am addicted.

I went here last week for lunch with my gf, looking at all the great reviews and chastising myself for not having tried it already despite living less than a mile away. After a 10 minute walk through an increasingly sketchy area, the interiors and location made me a little skeptical, and I fervently began hoping the food would change my mind. Well, to begin with the owners turned out to be some of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. This might be just me, but if food is served to me with a smile and a twinkle in the eye that excitedly conveys "I'm sure you will love this" I tend to enjoy it more. Well, Chuck the owner was exactly like that. After patiently explaining every item on the menu, he made two recommendations that he guaranteed we would love. These were the Chicken Roti and the Crab and Dumplings platter. This guy looked like he knew Caribbean food well, and so we decided to go with his suggestions. I tried the Ginger beer to drink which I had heard a lot about and gf tried the Sorrel juice. Both were very flavorful and you could tell they were home made, since there was no pasty taste of preservatives. All this for under 30 bucks!! The food came out 10 minutes later and we were pleasantly surprised at the quantity. Chuck offered us the tamarind chutney and a medium hot sauce (both home made of course) and we dived in. The food was amazing!! The spice level in both dishes was amazing, and the chicken extremely tender. The dumplings were out of this world, and I was baffled by how fried dough could taste so fluffy. I devoured 5 dumplings instantly, and there were still 3 left over, again the quantity was amazing. The only thing I wish I had more of was the roti with the chicken. The dish comes as a soft roti (bread) piled with chicken and potatoes, in an amazingly flavorful blend of spices. But the roti quickly disappears and one is left with a lot of chicken and veggies, which we ended up taking home) The crab too was the chesapeake kind so a little sparse on meat content, but the sauce that it came in had me licking my fingers. Chuck fondly reminisced about his days in Trinidad as he explained this dish and how people would fly in from all over during easter especially for crab and dumplings. He was really nice in catering to our spice level and offering us different versions of the hot sauce. I needed a cup of ice cream after the hottest level, so be careful with that one. The medium version is a gift from the gods in my opinion. It was simply blissful. All in all, this place really does make you feel like you're eating in an unpretentious beach side shack in Trinidad sipping home made ginger beer and enjoying friendly conversation with the people that bring you the food. I can definitely say that Im officially a frequent customer here from this day.

Cool place. Good prices. Had the shark bake and smoked herring. Shark bake was OK. Herring was perfect.

I ordered the curry chicken roti, and it was absolutely delicious! The owners were very nice and laid back, and the order was huge! plenty of food for 2 meals!

I have a thing for Caribbean food, and this place is delicious, and inexpensive. We shared the fried plantains (yum!), a double (basically two pieces of fried dough with some kind of delicious chickpea mix in between- try it with hot sauce), a veggie roti (soft delicious bread filled with potatoes, pumpkin, green beans, cauliflower- yum!), and the jerk chicken sandwich (actually I didn't get to try that one because my husband wolfed it down so fast- he really liked it!). We also had the sorrel to drink- quite tasty and unusual! All for $21. Not a fancy place by any means, but really delicious food. I wish this place was closer to us but if we're ever up in that area I know where to go!

I'm loyal to Trinidad Gourmet, but it's not as good as I initially thought it was. I still think the roti wrap itself is incredible, but the veggie roti is filled with gross frozen veggies. The fish one is way too fishy. I do love the curry chicken roti and will continue to get that one. The owner, Chuck, is extremely friendly and allowed my friends and I to drink beer there on my birthday. For how much you pay, you get a ton of food. I would suggest getting one roti for two people.

Good food. The doubles were good, but not the best. Same for the Aloo pie. The "Buss Up Shut" was really good. We got stewed chicken and curry beef. I like that the chicken and beef were already chopped up. There were no bones. Price is not as cheap as places where there's competition, but it's not super expensive either. I guess it's priced right for what you get. There isn't much to look for as the decor is concerned. It's what you'd expect from a West Indian place, so don't think you can take a date there for a nice sit down dinner. I'd opt for take-out and enjoy the food somewhere more comfy.

I've eaten here a couple of times. I would say this is best for a cheap meal when you don't want to cook but expect no fireworks. The owners are nice enough but Chuck seemed to always convince me to order a pricier item than the one I asked for( till I got smart about that). The other thing that bothers me is that the sides seem to be always cheap potatoes and chana(chickpeas) than the other stuff. i like the dhalpourie roti and the bake-shark. Never been too impressed with the chicken.

Had a craving for jerk chicken and came across this place after doing a search on Yelp. This place had the most positive reviews so I gave it a shot. Worst Jamaican food I have ever had. Jerk chicken didn't taste like jerk, plantains were dry and rice was even drier. Guess it's worth the trip to Park Heights for some awesome Jerk Chicken.

Ja mon! Step into this authentic Caribbean oasis, and wipe the Greenmount grime off of your shoes at the door. This Mom and Pop hole in the wall welcomes a regular stream of diverse clients who are excited for right off the boat home cooking. Shoveling super hot baby shrimp and spiced chick peas veggies into roti skins makes you want to reach for the fruity rum drink and shake the sand out of your bare feet at your kitchen table. "Gourmet" is a long strech, but TG is solid take out for sure. So, the rice was like uncle bens and the cabbage was crunchy and forgetable, but that must be how you get it if you are are on the island. The curry chicken was strangely mild, but the owner threw in some delicious wierd vinegary homemade hot sauce to jack up the flavor. Roll into Trinidad Gourmet if you are in the Hopkins area to patronize the local small business with safe immediate parking. Crank up the Bob Marley, pass the dutchie from the left hand side, and chow down on some Trinidad carbtastic grub!

I have SEVERAL places where I love to eat and call my favorite. But should I have to pick my last meal, hands down without hesitation still after 5 years, it would be the Curry Chicken Roti at Trinidad Gourmet with Ginger Tea to drink. My husband Keith always gets the Stew Chicken Roti. Please watch our video at youtube.com/watch?v=fLot… The owners are an amazing couple and have the CLEANEST kitchen you would ever see! He says the health inspector only comes to eat at his restaurant when he's in the area! Chuck & Donna are very health conscious and take so much pride in the quality of their food and we love hearing about their latest healthy eating/living tip. We frequent this place any & every time we're in the area. We even come out especially for this restaurant when we just can't get over our craving for it. The prices are absolutely incredible...soooo much food for the price! We buy a number of his sauces in large vats to take home and we put it on EVERYTHING. Definitely top on the list of FEEL GOOD food when we need a pick-me-up in mood and love it when we can top it off with a nap! LOL! I keep saying that I want to try the other menu items...I know I would love it, but I just can't tear myself away from the Curry Chicken Roti! We talk to many of the customers that come while we're there and they all have their favorite...the oxtail is quite popular. Everyone we talk to there is always happy, friendly & engaging...isn't that interesting??? You must try the Ginger Tea (hot), even if it's summer...it's like nectar from the gods! Last time we got both the ginger tea and his homemade Bitters which is very refreshing and uplifting. Please tell Chuck & Donna you saw their restaurant online with an amazing review as they would get so much joy out of that and they deserve it!

I like to come here when I'm stopping through Baltimore, if I lived there I have no doubt I'd be in a couple times a week for the doubles (spiced chick peas in fry bread). I always plan to try something new, but then the doubles call to me and I stay in my rut. I don't personally know anyone who's been disappointed with anything, though. I do also love all the home made drinks: the ginger beer, sorrel, and I love love love the sea moss (not an appetizing name, but so delicious, sort of reminds me of a horchata). Also, the most friendly man owns and operates the little restaurant. Good mainly as take-out. There's a small amount of seating.

I have a mild obsession with oxtail, so after my underwhelming experience at Caribbean Dutch Pot, I searched Yelp for a place that would satisfy my craving. The oxtail was an excellent grade of meat---not too fatty and plump. Their version doesn't have the amount of sauce that I am used to, but it was very tasty. It came with a side of rice and peas, cabbage, carrots, and sweet potato. The food was flavored on the "safe side" perhaps toning it down for American palettes. I loved the homemade taste and quality of the ingredients. I took a previous yelper's suggestion and ordered the ginger tea, and it was DIVINE. I will definitely return and ask them to kick it up a notch. I am also excited to get my doubles fix since the spot by my house closed. The owner was really nice and personable.

This was amazing. I'm so glad my friend and I stopped here. What a nice way to spend lunch on a Saturday after checking out the Book Thing around the corner! The owner and his wife were very hospitable, and explained the menu to us. (We were both Trinidad Gourmet virgins.) I split a peanut punch with my friend, and had a delicious shrimp and potato curry. I would definitely go back when I visit Baltimore again.

Rather unassuming looking on the outside and inside. Surprising there are so many reviews. Usually no one is in the restaurant. Owner says that people do take out I guess. NEver had trinadadian food so I can't compare. Owners seem to be immigrants and the food seems very homey and authentic The combo portions are a decent amount of food. Everything is fairly oily but not in a bad way ...not bad grease or anything. It's a mix between $ and $$ ..if you're like me and get combo plates you'll pay around 11-13$ The food seems to be pre-made. It's fresh, but most of the stuff they make throughout the day and re-heat it in the pan or microwave even. Flavors are great! It's still pretty good and will get you pretty full. If you're a foodie, you gotta go here because it's such a rarity around here. They have lots of unique main meats like shark.

Stewed Chicken was amazing, all the provisions were amazing. The flavor was very authentic and is prepared properly. The owner is very friendly and encourages you to try new things. The prices are very good. I would definitely recommend.

FYI: This review is only for the Chicken Roti (rollup) and the sorrel. I usually just go to DC to get my roti, but I decided to look for a place in Baltimore since its closer to my job. Long story short they popped all my balloons and spit in my punch. Their roti has strong doughy or maybe it's a flour-y taste? They used boneless skinless chicken breasts that didn't have much flavor at all over a thick bed of mashed up potatoes...(idk never seen that) Nor did they ask if I wanted pepper?! I am very particular about roti, I need it to be as close to what the lady in the next neighborhood over made for us in her house when I was growing up! I like some brown spots and there should be some ground up yellow split peas falling out when I tear it lol. The owners are definitely from Trinidad, but I believe this is more of the Indian version of roti... so this was not the roti I was looking for. Can't speak on whether or not the sorrel was freshly brewed, but it was watery. Definitely won't be back!!

I'll admit that this was my first attempt at "Caribbean" food and I have reservations about making a judgment about food in a specific place if I'm not familiar with the general cuisine. I didn't like what I ate but to be fair to this place, I'll instead assess on other merits. 1. Friendly and attentive man behind the counter who was willing to engage a foreigner about the cuisine with patience. 2. Cheap prices for an introduction to the place. 3. Quick service and attentiveness.

I heartily agree with the other reviews. Today was my first visit to Trinidad Gourmet. I had the oxtail stew and a sorrel soda, following the advice of the owner/cashier. Best food I've had in Baltimore. I'm curious about the menu though. There's a dish called "Bake&Shark." What is that? Also, have you guys tried the curry goat? I'd like to try that or the curry fish next time. Yum! PS: I looked online and found that bake&shark doesn't have any shark in it. Whew! Here's a description and recipe: trinigourmet.com/index.p…

Just like you were eating in Trinidad! In fact, the best Trinidadian food I've ever had (besides my mom and grandmom). I have had every roti on their menu: Chicken, Beef, Goat, to name a few. The food has always been fresh and delicious. The curry seasons everything to perfection! I try to go twice a month. The staff is wonderfully helpful and will let you know what drinks complement your meal of choice. (Peanut punch is my favorite, but they also have Sorrel & Mauby--for those with a brave palate). If you're worried about the neighborhood, you can place your order in advance and pick it up to go. The restaurant is always very quiet except when the manager is playing live music for you! It's so good I seriously considered moving to a closer apartment in order get to it! Great place for very small groups and very clean.

I have come here twice now for roti and it's one of the best I have so far. The roti wrap is fluffy and warm. The fillings (potato and meat of your choice) are flavorful. The food is authentic with just the right amount of seasoning (not too salting or too spicy). The dishes are also consistently good and the service (ordered over a counter) is fast and friendly. The serving is generous and the prices are very reasonable for what you get. The place deserves more recognition for its food despite the simple decoration. So don't hesitate to give it a try and you won't regret it!

Chuck is the man and he knows how to cook some good freakin' food. Get the oxtail stew. You won't be disappointed. The roti is also delicious as well as the plaintains. While you're there, try a sorrel soda. The food here is so good, and he gives you enough for two days, but it's too good to wait, so you'll just eat yourself into a food coma. It's a great excuse to avoid going out with out of town friends who want to go to Power Plant or some other nonsense Get some dinner from this place, tonight.

First of all I will say this is the first time I've ever had food from trinidad. I kind of though it would be like more mainstream carribean food but it wasn't. It was way better! Kind of a mix of carribean, indian, and ethiopean. Awesome. I was a little surprised that the place is as casual as it is (i guess the name just had me thinking nice restaurant) - its a take out window and picnic tables but the atmosphere is friendly and warm and the food is amazing. And according to the family dining next to us that moved here recently from Trinidad it is very authentic.

I wanted something different and so headed to trinidad cafe based on Yelp. The man behind the counter was very helpful, explaining the unfamiliar foods. I ended up ordering an oxtail stew roti, which had the tenderest meat and flavorful potato filling wrapped in this greatbread wrap. I really enjoyed it on this snowy cold day and will definately come back for more.

Chuck leaned over the counter, gazing intently into my eyes. Very seriously, in a hushed tone, he advised "You shouldn't eat that cake slice all at once. You should eat half, or maybe a third of it tonight and save the rest til tomorrow." Laughing, I told him that I'd never even eaten a roti all at once, there's no way I'd make it through that AND a slice of cake. He wasn't done though and continued "Maybe, maybe you could eat it all at once. But I wouldn't if I were you." Yes, Trini Gourmet has further expanded their ever-expanding menu to include homemade cakes! They have several different kinds; I picked one called "pune", which is made of shredded sweet potato, currants (?), coconut and other fruit and nuts, saturated with something sweet and cardamom-y. It wasn't very bready at all and was pretty darn delicious. They also have a currant cake, which looked lighter and is what I plan to get next time, a fruit cake, black sweet bread and something else that I forgot. I love this place. I live in mortal terror that they'll go out of business. And they work HARD- they open at 7am to serve breakfast. Their eggplant choka is a saute of eggplant wrapped in bake (a typre of fried(?) bread). Their couldn't have been more than 4 ingredients- the tender eggplant, some cooked onions, salt and oil, but despite the simplicity,my tastebuds were overwhelmed with deliciousness at every bite. They also serve a herring bake. This may be more of an acquired taste. The smokey, salty dried fish was perhaps a little too strong for me.. but I'd consider getting it again nevertheless. There are several more items for breakfast as well. For the record, I nibbled on the cake over the course of three days. Phew- dodged a bullet there.

What a wonderful place! The food was flavorful, delicious, and fast. They featured such a variety of foods, that the vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike left satisfied. We all tried new foods we'd never even heard of (like the tasty, refreshing peanut punch). We like the daal paranatha, and generally how Indian-influenced the food was. Chuck, the owner, was incredibly friendly and tells us his great-grandfather immigrated from India to Trinidad. I will take all of my out of town guests there, and perhaps organize a group from my graduate program (all interested in all things International) to go there. Such a wonderful experience. I left happy and satisfied.

The inside of the restaurant is clean and cozy but it is in a very sketchy neighborhood so just be forewarned. I drove from downtown Baltimore and I have never seen so many abandoned housing, broken windows, bed sheets over windows, boarded-up windows, and police cars in one area before. It was crazy! Anyways, like I said, the restaurant is clean and cozy. The cashier had great customer service. He handed me a menu and made some recommendations. I ordered the chicken stew platter which came with rice, plaintains, cabbage, and yams and the sorrel juice. The stew was amazing! It had a lot of flavor but I was surprised that it wasn't spicy...I was under the impression that all Carribean food was spicy. (I've never had Trinidad food so maybe my impression was wrong?) The rice, plaintains, cabbage and sorrel juice were good (you can't really mess those up right?!). However, I did not like the yams. I'm not sure how they cooked it but I didn't like it and I usually love yams so that was disappointing for me. My meal was just under $15 for a lot of tasty food so I thought it was a good value. I recommend this restaurant without hesitation. Just be careful around that neighborhood...I wouldn't feel safe exploring it on my own.

This little place is a real treat. It doesn't look like much (comparable to the average Chinese takeout with a couple tables as far as atmosphere goes), but the food is great and not the kind of thing you see everyday. The owners are very friendly and helpful (I went in there not knowing much about Trinidadian cuisine). They also have a huge variety of interesting carribean (non-alcoholic) drinks. For those not in the know, Trinidad food is a really interesting fusion of traditional Afro-Caribbean fare with a lot of South Asian influences. The prices are affordable and the portions are huge. Like I said, it may not be the place to take your significant other on your anniversary; but for a great cheap meal (maybe more like a feast!) with friends looking to try something new there are few better places I can think of in Baltimore.
