I felt compelled to write another review seeing as though there are a lot of people hatin' on Thairish. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, I get it, but this place has really tasty Spicy Chicken Pad Thai. I've tried Pad Thai from Thai Landing, Stang of Siam, and Ban Thai. Without a doubt, Thairish's Chicken Pad Thai is the best in this area because it isn't as sweet. I find other restaurants have Pad Thai that's cloyingly sweet. Thairish's has a great mixture of sweet, spicy, and salty flavors. I always ask for extra lime and it's never a problem. I treat the owner with respect and I receive it back, simple as that. No complaints here. I give 5 stars for the Spicy Chicken Pad Thai.

I used to live nearby. Now, I try to stop in whenever I am passing through the area. The prices are cheap, the menu is short and sweet. The food is great. The portions are not small to make up for the low prices. Everything is made to order. The only problem is parking.

Tiny establishment serves unbelievable Vegetable Pad Thai. It was tangy and light, not too sweet, with perfectly cooked veggies. Service was quick and the dish cost $10 including a tip.

When I lived down in Mt. Vernon, I used to love this place, but recently something very disturbing has come to my attention about the owner and their hiring policies. In a post made by a former employee (or current, maybe) advertising employment for a dishwasher and server, they made sure to note that whomever applies "Must be a guy" and that this is the owner's policy. Not only is this sexist, it's illegal. Employers cannot legally discriminate in this way when hiring. This is the original posting I'm citing from: "Thairish (804 N Charles) is hiring right now. Perfect part time job while you're in school or if you're out of school looking to make some cash on the side. Server/ dishwasher position. Working hours are 5-10:30 tues-friday and 5-11 sat, sunday. $50 plus a meal per shift. Must be a guy (sorry not my policy). Message me if you're interested." I'll no longer be taking my business here, and would urge patrons to support somewhere else that is an equal opportunity employer.

We got takeout chicken Pad Thai from here last night and even though we had to re-heat the food it was still really tasty. I appreciate the fact that the chicken was whole, thick, boneless, breasts instated of just shavings. The three stars came out the next morning, along with the rest of meal, when I spent three agonozing hours with the most epic butt-mud imaginable. Like, David Lean epic. Luckily it was a Sunday, but if it were a weekday, I would have called in sick and that's not worth it.

Twelve years ago, I was returning from a business meeting when my colleague turned off the highway earlier than I had expected. "Why are you going through the city?" I wanted to know. "We're having lunch at Thairish," he explained. I was a little miffed he hadn't even asked me what I wanted to eat, but when we arrived at the little hole-in-the-wall and I tasted the best curry I had ever had, I was smitten. And I'm still coming back. What do I love about Thairish? First, the limited (and charmingly handwritten) menu. They don't try to serve sushi or pizza or chicken wings or kebabs or anything else they think will increase their appeal. They make Thai food. Period. And it's incredible Thai food. The curry is spicy and fresh -- he makes it to order -- and you will not find fresher or more plentiful vegetables at any other Thai restaurant in the area. The tofu is fresh too, a bit like the texture of ricotta cheese -- not gelatinous or greasy like at so many other establishments. The rice is hot, and all entrees are served on real plates with real silverware even though the place only seats 10 (if the 10 are skinny and not wearing backpacks.) I'm not a big Pad Thai fan, so I usually order curry. My favorite is Masaman, with coconut milk and peanuts, but the red and green curries are good too, and I recently had the spicy Phrik Pao -- dark in color and eye-wateringly hot. The Tom Yum shrimp soup is wonderful, too, and you absolutely must get the Thai iced tea with cream. It's a really unique flavor, sweet and earthy. On my last trip there we were greeted warmly by a laid-back college student who excused himself to wake the proprietor, who was napping in the back during a lull. In the 30 minutes or so we were sitting there, we saw half a dozen people enter, all of whom were friendly with the proprietor and obviously dedicated repeat customers. A couple brought in their new baby, adorable in his snowsuit. A student introduced his sister who was visiting from out of town. An exhausted professional called in her order and stayed to chat for a few minutes before heading out with her chicken Pad Thai and a smile on her face. This place is the real deal -- a neighborhood gem that serves great food and, I sure hope, will still be around twelve years from now. Because I would gladly take a detour through the city to have lunch here, any time I have the chance.

Worst Pad Thai noodle ever. I felt like I was eating fried noodles with salt and 4 shrimps. No veggies or sauce at all. Look nothing to what I'm used to. If this is the Original version I would rather stay with the American version of Thai Noodles. I regretted spending my lunch money in this place.

It is a small place.. Like very very small. I had Chicken pad thai and it was a little over $8. The price is good, not bad. But what's not good is the food. My pad Thai didn't taste good. And I ordered chicken pad Thai but there wasn't enough chicken in it. It wasn't that terrible, but it wasn't what I expected it to be!

The food here is truly awful! Seriously, the worst Thai food I've ever had in my life, hands down. The food is super salty (probably to mask freshness), the noodles in the Pad Thai we still hard, the Thai tea was watered down, and the broccoli was raw with huge stalks still attached. My girlfriend I just took a couple bites from our meals and left feeling taken advantage of. This place is super bogus, don't waste your money here.

When it comes to food in general, I'm not much of a picky eater plus it's rare that I don't finish every thing on my plate. I just couldn't finish my chicken curry panang. Honestly, it just wasn't appetizing. The best thing on my plate was the white rice. I hate leaving these type of reviews but I had to be honest. Maybe in a few months I'll try another dish at this establishment. For now, I will stick with Thai landing and stang of Siam if I crave Thai food.

I've been going here for more than 8 years. I used to live 5 minutes away and when I moved farther away, I still make sure that I get my Thai food here. I've tried a lot of places in the city and county and hands down this place have the best Chicken Pad Thai! His Pad Thai is Not sweet which makes it WAY better compared to the overly sweet pad thai of other places. This is not a fancy place but boy it beats the food on those fancy places close by!

I've given this place two tries because I would LOVE to find a nice divey Thai joint. I've had authentic Thai, I've made it myself as well. Alas, Thairish, must have taken quite a downturn since they got awarded those plaques on the walls from the late 90's. Most recently I tried the tofu Phad Thai, and once again - can you say BLAND? It was as if the chef forgot to add sauce or any flavorings whatsoever. Same with my friend's dish. Sad face.

  • Christina C.

Not good!! I tried this place because most people who had the pad thai seemed to like it, and that's all I wanted. The pad thai is terrible!! both the noodles and the chicken were entirely TOO SALTY, and that was after one bite. The noodles were unevenly cooked, from GUMMY TO BURNT. There is no other flavor than salt and spicy. It is not mixed well so half the noodles are just stuck together with no coating. I don't care about presentation so much as taste for take-out, but this is bad and just shades of brown. I rarely don't finish something that I have bought, but I cannot bring myself to finish this. I also got the spring roll, no flavor, no sign of any vegetables in the vegetable spring roll. Just rice noodles. Very very disappointed.

One of the best Pad Thai I have ever had. Crispy noodles and super well prepared.

Gave this place another try, and this time I ordered the green curry. It was terrible- basically just watered-down curry paste with chicken and a few vegetables, which tasted awful. No sign of any of the normal green curry ingredients I regret giving it another shot. Spend a few extra $ and go to Stang of Siam or Ban Thai, both good options a few blocks away.

I need to start this off saying I'm incredibly biased. I have that *one* Thai restaurant I love above all other ones. It's not in Bmore unfortunately, but it's the kind of place that does everything the way I like it. I'm hoping to find something similar in Baltimore, but that's been harder than it should be with as many Thai offerings as there are here. When you go to a Thai restaurant and you order curry, you expect to get a big bowl of rice and a big bowl of curry, or some configuration of this. Thairish does everything stir fry style, like other reviewers mention. This would be fine by me, particularly since the Mussaman curry was the most amazing I've had in Baltimore so far. The owner of this place can make some curry like woah. The problem is, my meal was 80% broccoli and there was less than 1/2 cup of curry. I don't get it - I haven't been anywhere in town that actually puts potatoes and nuts in their Mussaman. Isn't that how it's traditionally made? School me if someone knows better. But anyway, yeah. 80% broccoli. Like huge chunks of broccoli. So I ate around the broccoli and overall it took me about five minutes to eat my meal. I'm not a super fast eater - so I was bummed about this and didn't feel I got my money's worth. Boyfriend felt meh about his dinner as well. He'd asked the owner for extra peanut sauce - apparently the peanut sauce is made in such a way that the owner can't give out extra. Whatever that means. (?!?) My boyfriend asked for pad thai with no egg - so you can't get it without egg, but the owner told us he gave us a "light egg" version of Pad Thai (which was nothing but egg.) This would be confusing, but I think a lot of microwaving happens in this place and that explains it. It's cool that he doesn't want to customize everything and he wasn't rude about it, but being able to get your food made like you want it is important. It's not a carefully assembled gourmet menu, dude. It's a hole in the wall Thai place. I can get why people would be cool with this place and enjoy it - it's just not for me. People who love it and have a great experience, awesome. We won't go again, which is sad, because that curry was awesome. If only I could get a little more. And some rice. And less broccoli. And some peanut sauce.

I ate Thai food for the first time here. It's a little expensive for the small, smokey restaurant. The food was ok and the service is quick. This place is right next to the Helmand tucked into a small area that you'd miss if you blinked while walking down the street!

A hole in the wall Thai restaurant with basically one chef and one assistant. The smoke from the cooking overwhelms the small area due to poor ventilation and we left smelling like fried food. We ordered the green curry and chilli sauce dishes with rice. It basically came with broccoli, cucumber, carrots and chicken breast meat. The Thai green curry was spicy but otherwise tasteless. The chicken breast was overcooked. We also had the Thai iced tea which was almost unsweetened and tasteless. For appetizers we got the spring rolls which has vermicelli in it. Some of the vermicelli strands were undercooked and hard. Overall, it was crudely prepared home cooked Thai food with small portions in a tiny place. I could have cooked better Thai green curry with a paste at home. The chef / owner was rude too and demanded that we paid cash although all the customers after us paid with credit card. We left dissatisfied, stinky and cashless. I'll never come back here again.

Just had the most mortifying experience at this restaurant. My fiancee and I were standing outside after meeting up with 2 friends we saw walking by. We were having a pleasant conversation for about 5 minutes outside (the two of them were contemplating eating here) before a young kid comes out and asks us if we were planning to order anything, or were just going to stand out front. Now keep in mind, we're on a public sidewalk, about 5 feet from Thairish more inbetween it and Dooby's, so it's not like we were blocking the entrance or standing in the restaurant. So I calmly tell him it's a public sidewalk, we're having a nice conversation and there's no reason we should have to move. After a bit of back and forth, the crazy owner comes running out the door shouting at us to move away, that we MUST stand 10-15 feet away from his restaurant. I look at him incredulously and say "We are standing on a public sidewalk. If it's illegal for us to be here, feel free to call the cops and have us forcibly moved." At this point he begins shouting even more aggressively, pointing at me and flipping out. I shout back at him and we exchange words for another 30 seconds or so. At this point, I wave at him, smile and say "Have a good night. We aren't moving." and he eventually walked back inside and left us alone while shouting on his way back in. If he's that crazy, and based on the other reviews the food isn't very good, I'd avoid this like the plague. Thai Landing is a few blocks down the road and the owner is as nice as can be and the food is made with love. Avoid this craphole.

The owner is a terrible human being. I will never ever support this business at all. I would advice everyone to avoid this place and not waste any of your money. The owner is disrespectful and just a mean person. We were just standing outside on the sidewalk (which is a public sidewalk in the city) having a nice conversation when the owner just came out and started screaming and cursing at us to move. We told him that if he had a problem, he can gladly call the police. Of course he didn't because he knew he was wrong. I have been wanting to try this place for a while now since I moved to the area, but now knowing how the owner talks to people, I would NEVER come here.

I don't know why everyone is hatin on this place. Yes it's small and the food is simple but don't go saying it's not authentic. This is good street food and is in an unfortunate location due to the high influx of snobby people that roam Mt. Vernon. Places like this have character and are what make baltimore a great place. Sorry I guess the owner should spend more time on the appearance of the restaurant and less on the food? Grab some Thairish and some Boh's and enjoy!

PadThai-- There are many ways to make this national dish of Thailand, but once you taste the clean, crisp version made to order by the chef/owner of Thairish, you'll never want the limp, goopy version that passes for PadThai in many restaurants. Thairish's open kitchen is like a free cooking lesson. Watch & learn from this master chef. I think his "secret" is simplicity: fresh ingredients cooked together in a wok over high flame--- WITHOUT tamarind paste. This restaurant is a culinary jewel.

  • Sylvia S.

Went into this place looking for some quick good food. I was looking at the menu when a man off the street came up and told me that the place I was looking at was good. With his recommendation in mind, I decided to try it. I ordered the bean curd soup and a spring roll. I have never had such bad thai food in my life. The soup (someone uploaded a picture of it if you want to look) broth was water with a few drops of lemon and maybe a teaspoon of coconut milk with one block of tofu, a slice of carrots, a peice of broccoli and a piece of squash. The spring roll was overly greasy and flavorless (filled only with glass noodles). It was all over non-filling and not cheap enough or with big enough portions to make up for the bad quality. Most tasteless thai food I've ever had, don't go. Apparently people in Baltimore just have bad taste, I don't know how else to understand how a man off the street recommended it and people inside ordering told the cook "you guys are always the best".

I've been to this hole-in-the-wall eatery twice, ordering the pad thai and...something equally mainstream (I forget). Both times the staff were very courteous and helpful. The food was decent - not extremely memorable but definitely not bad. If you want some quick Thai food, this place will fit your ticket.

If your looking for fancy décor and amazing backgrounds for selfies....skip. But if you are looking for delicious Thai food, run to this place. The food is delicious and the owner is down-to-earth and cool. This place definitely gets all of my stars.

THE FOOD WAS DISGUSTING! DON'T GO HERE! NOT MADE FRESH. We should have guessed when the restaurant was empty at dinner time. Chicken coconut milk soup (Tom Kah Gai) was just microwaved chicken with water and a little coconut milk. "Broth" is apparently a vague term. It's pretty shocking they had the audacity to actually serve that garbage. Massaman Curry dish was microwaved chicken breast on white rice and sauce that was heated up. The steamed vegetables were good. Egg roles are pre-made vegetarian roles that are then deep-fried. Lacked any real taste - just tasted the oil. VERDICT: nothing was fresh. The chicken breast was bland. Only things to like about this place are the steamed vegetable and the price. Pretty cheap, but you get what you pay for. Go elsewhere.

  • Sarah B.

Although the service was wonderful I was left feeling underwhelmed with the food. I was seriously craving some rich and creamy green curry, Tom Kah Gai soup, and Thai iced tea yet all were very watery. I also tried my partners panang curry and did not enjoy the flavor components. For both curries it was as if coconut water was used instead of coconut milk. I have wanted to try this spot's food for years now and feel let down and unsatisfied with my dishes. I did try my buddy's pad Thai and that was super tasty, so perhaps just stick with the noodle dishes if you decide to pay Thairish a visit.

intimate interesting spot for Thai fast food. The owner's abrupt brisk manner was as if I was in a Seinfeld episode of the soup nazi. The food is Ok: light simple pedestrian fare. If you're hungry and need to eat try it. If not keep looking.

I love Thai food and eat it often. I travel a lot and usually have great food in small, hole in the wall places like this restaurant. This was not the case here. This is by far the worst Thai restaurant I have ever been to. The menu is small, but I'm ok with that as long as the food is good. I ordered Tom Yum Soup and Pad Thai. The soup was disgusting. It tasted like overly salty chicken broth. I have never seen Tom Yum soup the color this soup came, or taste like it did. My pad Thai was not any better. It did not have any flavor, except for the oil it was cooked in. To top it off, there was half an eggshell in it-not a little piece-not a quarter-HALF AN EGG SHELL! The cook (owner?) was so rude to me and to the other customers I saw come in, I didn't think it was worth it to argue with him. I just handed him my uneaten food (ok-I ate the shrimp-which did not taste fresh), and left the eggshell for him to see. I waited to see if he's say anything, but I think I gave him too much credit. This restaurant should be avoided and your money spent elsewhere.

It's extremely rare that I give bad reviews, but this was the worst experience, ever. Do not waste your time and money. Seriously. Firstly, the owner "Kim" is downright rude and nasty to the customers. I went in here, yesterday, with two of my girlfriends who are not very familiar with Thai food. We asked him a few questions about the menu and he was so freaking rude to us...I was two seconds short of walking out and telling everybody walking in to avoid this place. I am a sucker for good Thai, but this place does NOT know a good Thai dish. Sure, Kim may be Thai, but can he cook? No. They have ONE noodle dish on their ever so tiny menu - pad thai. So, that's what I recommended to order and I got it myself. According to the menu (and other Thai menus), the Pad Thai came with bean sprouts, peanut sauce, spring greens, egg, and whatever meat you choose - we all got chicken. We get our food and I was DISGUSTED. The portion was tiny - there was NO peanut sauce, NO egg, NO spring greens, TWO beans sprouts, and THREE pieces of the driest chicken I've ever had to force myself to eat. Also, it was extremely salty...like I was eating an ocean. The food was...inedible. When I say it was similar to eating a salty tire with cat meat, I am not kidding. Secondly, we eat and go to pay for our dish (even though I didn't want to and only ate 1/4 of my plate). The dish was $8.95 and I got a Coke for $.99. Kim was shouting to the cashier (who was embarrassed to even be there and, I'm assuming, is new) "ring them up $10.54". So, the cashier put $10.54, added tax, to bring my total to $11.13, when the total should have been $10.54, after tax. Kim then yelled at the guy to give me back my change about fifteen times. Just unnecessary, uncomfortable, and unprofessional. If Kim would stop trying to be a Thai hard-ass, and let the poor guy do his job and ring people up without being yelled at, then it would have been fine. The guy was totally flustered and everybody in that place could tell...I wish I could have saved him. I paid my bill, got my change back, and was so ready to leave the awkwardness. With all that being said, I will never return and never recommend this place. I hope the young guy that works there finds a new job before he starts questioning his identity. This place sucks in every way - just avoid it.

Can only speak for the chicken pad Thai but I think it's excellent for the value. And it's quick to go most of the time. Not much of a place to sit and eat but he makes it well with just the right spice (I get it hot) I recommend.

The food is amazing here! It is the best Thai that I have found in Baltimore; and, I have tried a handful of places. I would give this place 5 stars, but sometimes I've gone there and they are randomly closed. The Chicken pad Thai is beast here; I get it every time. This place is blaze.

  • Lia A.

It's not Thai food. It's not Thai food. It's not Thai food. I feel like the cooks have only heard about Thai food but never tried it. I don't get it. Like a couple of American frat boys (or MICA kids that never got to travel) pretending to make Thai food (but without many Thai ingredients). I'm surprised it's still around, honestly. Yes, I've been to Thailand. No, I'm not Thai, but it was the primary food I ate growing up. A few other reviewers wrote "disgusting." I hate to write that, but yeah, its true. Funny, another reviewer wrote "worst Thai food I've ever had". I'd write that too but then I'd have to agree it was Thai food. Honestly, after reading the positive reviews it's hard not to believe they were written by the owner's friends or Americans used to McDonalds and ricearoni. Once I went to a small town in Spain and they served a pizza with Heinz ketchup instead of tomato sauce. We were baffled and hungry and what was before us was so wrong and so gross. Thairish is that in a nutshell.

Ordered the shrimp pad thai here and was very underwhemed. Tastewise, I rate it moderately mediocre, however the noodles were way overcooked to the point of being burnt around the edges. Virtually no eggs to be found in my order as well, perhaps the person ahead of me who got take out had it all put in their dish. Unfortunately, as far as Thai food places go, this area is largely lacking in such restaurants, so it's basically this place or nothing unless you are willing to travel farther in the city.

WTF??!!!!!! My pad thai was so salty i threw it away after my second bite. Pad thai is supposed to be sweet not like your eating just rice noodles with a bunch of salt and some chicken. There was nothing else to it - no bean sprouts, crushed peanuts, and absolutely no flavor besides the overwhelming amount of salt. Not sure how so many people reviewed this place with 3-5 stars. This place is horrible!!! Have you not had good thai before!!? This is the worst food i have ever had. The owner wouldnt give me a refund. I was trying to have a conversation while he constantly yelled at me how he has had this restaurant for 20+ years, the customer is not always right, a bunch of people come here and love the joint...YA Right!!! This place is a joke. Screw this place...the owner sucks..he's from thailand but doesnt know how to cook. I have been to plenty of thai restaurants in seattle and new york....thairish you suck! I need to drink water now from all the salt i had with those first two bites.

My favorite neighborhood spot. The chef / owner and his family are wonderful, and remember us when we call to order. Definitely best carry out around. Just wish it was able to be open more often and longer! But glad he is able to live his life and share his wonderful food. Best pad Thai hands down, and best fried rice I have ever had. Also love the Masaman and Tom Yum Goong (shrimp soup). Really, if you are a Thai food fan or even willing to give it a first try, you can't go wrong.

Surprisingly good Thai fast-ish food in hole-in-the-wall setting. The serving size is really only adequate for a small lunch and I'm uncertain why this hasn't been attended to. Note: As per policy, the five-star rating is an attempt to address the unfair general rating of a place worth trying. For what it is, you're unlikely to get better.

Hands-down, the worst Thai food I've ever had anywhere. I don't mind hole-in the-wall eateries, so long as the food is good. The chicken in my noodle dish tasted like it was practically fried to death and smothered in disgusting salt and oil. I thought I was getting pad thai, but it was just noodles and fried chicken. No vegetables! or any other ingredients, no fragrant Thai spices, just oil and salt, and inedible. Not sure why people go here, even for fast food (which wasn't that fast). Thai Arroy in Federal Hill is probably the best of the cheap Thai restaurants in Baltimore (and My Thai or Thai Landing for slightly more upscale).

Really, it should be -10 stars. Pretty sure the food and customer service is better in Hell. Ordered takeout at the spot. Got home and my "pad thai" had none of the accoutrements that were advertised to be on it (from the menu); items that are usually on Pad Thai (spring onions, lime wedge, peanuts, etc.). Called and the dude who answered talked to the "chef," telling me that "yes, those items were supposed to be on there" but "no, he would not make me a new one." After being told he would correct the mistake if I came back down, I lugged back in the car. Decided to just get my money back since the noodles and breaded chicken were nothing that a middle schooler couldn't make. He refused and told me I didn't know what Thai food tasted like; now I'm not Thai but I def know what salt tastes like so if that was authentic Thai food then the country's in shambles. After some cajoling he put the items back on while mocking me despite me very politely showing him his own menu. Maybe he can't read, he definitely can't cook, will not go back and make sure everyone I know does not go. Maybe if the food was great I would be able to handle the guy being a complete prick, but soggy noodles and chicken fingers....ain't nobody got time fa dat.

This is the WORST Thai food that I have EVER had! I just ordered it 10 minutes ago, brought it home, and am horribly disappointed. I mean, seriously, I have never been so disappointed in a plate of food before in my life. The meat is low quality and the dish is heavily salted to try and hide that fact, among other problems. Awful, just awful.

When I saw this place on Charles St., I was all set to like it. I liked the 'hole in the wall, one guy with a wok' decor. So I ordered a shrimp Pad Thai ($9.50). When they put it in the container, I was a bit concerned about the lack of green onions, crushed peanuts, or anything other than noodles and 3 shrimp. But I took it home anyways, with an open mind. Having eaten half of it, I can say it was pretty much the worst pad thai I have ever eaten, anywhere. I managed to choke down half of it because I was hungry, but I'm going to throw away the other half. There was very little flavor, the (3) shrimp tasted old, and the rice noodles were fried in a way so that they were all dried out and stuck together unpleasantly. They asked me if I would like it spicy (to which I said yes), and I guess 'spicy' means they shake some cayenne powder onto it. No Thai chilies here. I am a fan of Thai food, mostly Pad Kee Mao (which they didn't have), but I do enjoy a good Pad Thai, and this was most emphatically not a good Pad Thai. I can say I would never give any more of my money to this place, and would not recommend anyone else order this item. Maybe their other stuff is better. I'm not planning on going back to find out.

Remember that significant other who loved to cook for you but was horrible at it?? And you ate the food anyway because you didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings? If you're dying to reminisce on moments like that, I suggest you check out Thairish. Water in some areas of the world is certainly a luxury. With that in mind, the percentage of water in the Thai Iced Tea makes it truly luxurious. The chicken tastes like it was cooked on the finest of the finest George Foreman grills. The entire time I thought to myself, WOW.. is this really Thai food? Ehhh... not sure. I think it's more of a.. how do you say... Thairish?

Thai tea tasted like water no flavor what so ever. Pad Thai was dry. The older guy always seems to have an attitude. With that being said I won't be back.

Overpriced. Mediocre food. Slow service. I got the chicken gaeng, I actually wanted shrimp but they were out... Not only that they said it was going to be mild. It was BARELY spicy... I ordered thai iced tea with my order as well and it tasted like it was watered down. Not only that, the cashier forgot about my thai iced tea. I had to remind him when he gave me my order and he forgot that I wanted cream in it.. The chicken was really bland, flavorless even the sauce didn't help. Biggest rip off ever for $11.08. Baltimore you disappoint me..

Umm... I don't understand why this place has a three-star average. I think this is one of the best Thai places in baltimore. The veggies are always fresh, the shrimp are great, and the sauces are pretty fantastic. I love this place - forget the haters! (get the shrimp masaman)

I appreciate the single-owner business. I have great respect for the Chef that's in front of that wok 6 days a week. It's always the same guy! He's working hard for us. There are different interpretations of Thai food, and his is not my favorite. I like my curry a bit saucier. However, $7.95 plates of clean, fresh ingredients prepared to order can't be bad in anyone's opinion. It's great for quick lunch take-out or inexpensive easy dinner if you live in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood.

Eh. I like the place, it's small, it's got the whole kitchen wide open for all the world to see and the prices are decent, for a Thai place. But there are problems. One of them is that when the menu says spicy, it means mild tang. When it says very spicy it means you might have to take a sip of water. I'm used to burn-your-face-off Thai spice, and this had none. Further, the dishes were small. We got takeout and were given a hunk of tasteless white rice along with two or three shrimp and one piece of broccoli. Not exactly filling. Also, $1.50 for a thai tea. You get what you pay for.

The first time I tried Thairish was when I first moved to Mount Vernon. Since then 99% of my thai meals have come from Banthai (which I love), but I'm making the effort to try all the other places in the neighborhood just in case I'm missing out on something. With that in mind, I just made my second trip to Thairish today for lunch. People certainly have their own specific expectations for thai food, and I'm not surprised this place has some hardcore fans. I certainly don't have bad things to say about the place, but I don't really see myself going back even though I do want the place to stay open since the owner/cook is such a hardworking and interesting character. The pad thai had decent enough flavor when I had a bite of just the noodles, but the chicken was a huge distraction. It tasted like the kind of roasted chicken you'd have with mashed potatoes and biscuits, as opposed to what should be in pad thai. It was completely overwhelming and it's all you could really taste. At some point, I might go back to see if today was a fluke, but if this is how the pad thai comes standard, I'll just have to give these guys a pass and hope they keep doing well with their loyal customer base.

3 or 4 stars? Get out much? You know how NY jumbo slice pizza places have lines out the door every weekend night? It's not because the food is good, but because it satisfies and it's cheap. Thairish fills that same niche. I've gone many times, but never for good Thai food. The owner is awesome (personable, friendly) and the hippest MICA trained hipsters are always there manning the register, but the food? Imagine boiling chicken breast and veggies and throwing them in a pot of curry sauce you made hours earlier. Thairish makes that reality. For good, no great Thai food, head four blocks up Charles St. to Thai Landing. For a cheap meal that has hints of Thai origins, go here.

We used to live within a few blocks from this place. I only tried their spring rolls and vegetable pad thai dishes but I loved both of them. Their food is not americanized at all and I loved the authentic flavor. The cook is very professional and you don't need to wait too long for your dish. The price is pretty reasonable too.

I have introduced at least 30 friends, now hard core Thairish addicts, to Kim's chicken pad Thai over the years. Hands down Thairish is one of their favorite restaurants. The ingredients are fresh, and cooked right in front it's you. it's not for those "fans" of Thai food who enjoy that saccharine sweet pad Thai sauce poured over limp noodles. the pad thai here is savory and flavorful. Kim's pad Thai is the real deal, and the fresh organic ingredients are among the many things that distinguish Thairish from some of the other local Thai restaurants whose sugar laden offerings are tough to stomach. When I leave Thairish after dining, I leave happy.

I've done the Thai circuit in Baltimore but this place is in it's own special class. Contrary to other reviews mentioning the attitude of chef/owner Kim, I find him to be a delightful person - he just operates his business the way he wants to. He prepares his pad thai in a unique way that's not for everyone. Several people will use this dish as the baseline for comparing other thai restaurants but his iteration of the dish keeps me coming back for more. It isn't fresh and it's not wet like a conventional pad thai but the charred characteristic to his noodles is just so delicious to me. Stop by and ask for a free Thairish 2014 calendar. It features some hand-drawn goodies from other fans. The curry dishes are really good, too. This place is typically good if you're on the go. Not great for crowds and operates on some weird hours. Several will disagree with me, but I earnestly believe that this place adds charm to our city.

A small place with great thai food. Not greasy or gooey thai food. Very fresh and delicious. Whenever I'm in Baltimore, I love to visit this little gem.

In the past, I thought this place had great carry-out Thai food. Either my standards have gotten higher, or the food here got worse: I'm not sure... Bland Pad Thai. No sprouts or peanuts or scallions or cilantro that I could taste.... Better than 'Noodles and Company', but not by much. This place is good for a quick take away at a cheap price, but it's not very authentic or delicious.... It is what it is....

When i say hole in the wall, concerning Thairish, it really is. A few tables, chairs and a short counter compose the floorspace of my new favorite thai spot in Baltimore. Its home cooked thai, to go. Something i have lost touch with since departing my Thai cooking mentor many years ago. The chef (in plain sight) and his assistant were nothing but friendly and seemed to know what we were about to enjoy we would remember. And being so cheap how could i pass it up. I ordered a simple Penang with Tofu, and my boyfriend requested the Pad Thai, which seemed to be the most popular item on the menu. flavorful, quick and delicious. i promise you wont be disappointed with the home cooked expertise of Thairish.

This little place is a gem. He has the best Pad Thai I have ever had. His other dishes are authentic and tasty. If you're used to McThai food and Americanized Thai, perhaps you wont like it as much. But in my opinion, it's the best take out option and best Thai in Mt. Vernon.

Stopped here for a quick takeout dinner. I got a veggie gaeng, my friend got the pad thai. I thought my meal was fine, she loved hers. Would have liked a larger serving size, but the chef cooks right in front of you and the veggies were fresh, which is better than the vast majority of takeout places I've ever been in.

Wow. Thairish has a pretty funny name and exactly nothing else to recommend it. Without a doubt the worst Thai food I have ever had. When I eat curry, I expect some veggies, long simmered in a coconut milk broth, not too raw to even generously call "al dente." When I order massaman curry, I expect crushed peanuts and potatoes that split easily with a fork, not just some lukewarm yellow broth. When I order green curry, I expect fresh spice, not milk so thick with curry powder that it got stuck in my teeth. Truly, truly awful.

I was introduced to Thairish when I was younger and living in Baltimore. I remember how I loved the combination of the spicy chicken pad thai and a cold ginger beer. Having moved to New York over 9 years ago, I was woefully disappointed that Kim's flavorful, pan fried style pad thai was nowhere to be found! New York Pad Thai, and this is maybe an over generalization (but founded), is often saucier and sweeter. Quite the opposite of what you'd (hope for) expect. Having made several Thai dishes (including Pad Thai) from an authentic Thai Cookbook, I've learned that *SPICY* is the rule rather than the exception. Kim's flash-fried glass noodles and seared spicy chicken embody the Thai cuisine. No, it's not fancy or even a comfortable place to stand waiting for your food. But, if you're like most people who live in Baltimore, you're more likely to grab this on the way home or on the way out and I have to say it travels well. Maybe I'm biased because this is where I discovered Pad Thai and maybe because my search for the perfect Pad Thai is just a persistent tastebud memory. But this still stands as my favorite, if the not the BEST, place to have Pad Thai. Oh, and Thai Crabcakes... in Baltimore... don't waste your time anywhere else!!

This place is great. The food exceeded my expectations, which I had set based on the look of the establishment. I got the chicken curry, and it was very tasty and fresh. I left the place feeling satisfied. I will definitely be visiting Thairish again.

Good food, good prices, and relatively quick means I'm there all the time. The spicy pad thai is awesome. Take time to talk to the chef as he's truly a character. He knows my order when I walk in the door and is always very friendly. Plus, I love the interaction with the thai chef and the hipster young guys who work the counter. Hilarious. Credit cards in the evening and cash only for lunch.

This place is quite possibly the best "hole-in-the-wall" Thai place in the City. This place is a simple, authentic Thai kitchen, located on Charles Street just 1 block north of Baltimore's Washington Monument, with a Chef (Kimman) who is making dishes the same way his mother made for him when he was a child. They've basically had the same menu for 18 years and every dish is made to order. The Chef is fairly strict on substitutions or recipe changes but will make accommodations when possible (as stated on their menu). As stated before... some consider him the "Thai Nazi" (as a reference to the "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld). However, he is one of the most friendly guys and always remembers me (and my friends) by face and is quick to start a small conversation. All vegetables are fresh and steamed. The curry and sauces are light (not like gravy) and perfectly spiced. The tofu is always cooked perfectly light and firm without being chewy, tough or mushy. The chicken and shrimp is always fresh, well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The quaint and personal dining area inside is accommodating for lunch or dinner with up to 4 people at a table, and you can watch the entire meal cooking process 10 feet from where you order it. No table cloths. No fancy menus. You get your food on plates or in bowls, served on plastic lunch trays and thats the way it is and you LIKE it :) I am always excited to eat at Thairish. All the other Thai places just mush together into something less than memorable. If all you eat is typical Pad Thai from your local restaurant or delivery joint, Thairish probably isnt the place for you... or perhaps they can open your tastebuds up to something better :)

You know, I hate to give this a lukewarm review because the chef himself was extremely sweet and nice, you can watch as he actually cooks your food, and the place was well-kept and clean. That said, though, I really wasn't impressed by the pad thai I got. For one thing, it was very salty. I asked for "spicy" and it had no burn at all, not even a little - and I am fairly sensitive to spice, but perhaps he misheard or something. Finally, it just missed the sweet-sour-savory depth of flavor that other pad thais have that makes it so especially delicious as a dish. I see one of the other reviews said the dish includes fish and soy sauces, but pad thai I normally eat usually has tamarind and sugar as well. Anyway, if I lived/worked in the area I might be willing to give it another go, but I wouldn't expect it to be excellent.

Thairish is just what three stars means: A-OK. The food is good, but not great. They get the curries right, but don't come looking for upscale Thai or fresh ingredients. The tofu is a square or two of raw tofu tossed in the mix, the chicken is just chunked breast meat. People are always shocked by the pad thai because it is not saucy like at other places, but rather a peanut and citrus-based noodle saute - I like it though. The thai tea is also on point. Overall, not a place you want to take anyone who would refers to themselves as "a foodie", but a good place to spend nine bucks to get a quick fry-up from a couple of manically enthusiastic cooks. You can order, walk to the liquor shop across the street for supplies and your food will be ready upon return. Ain't that America.

Ok so the environment is not all that but the food is amazing! Great price for the best pad Thai noodles ever- try it with the shrimp, sure to please!

  • Al E.

idk - between a 2 and 3. I don't understand why the pad thai has no peanuts and so few scallions and sprouts. This time, it was just noodles, 2 shrimp, and lots of egg. It is important that the pad thai is not the super sweet varietal that is typically served, but I miss the crunch.

We got a veg masaman curry, one of the green chicken curries and bean curd soup. The bean curd soup looked like dish-water( and the poor taste makes me guess that dishwater must taste similar). It had a single scrawny piece of bean curd and big pieces of steamed broccoli. Thankfully it did not upset my tummy- I was afraid it would. The entrees were okay and what stands out in mind are the big chunks of steamed broccoli that graced both the entrees and the soup. Thai food with broccoli? The crockery is old and disgusting...the grey under the white china is visible from years of being scratched from silverware. Horrible red cafeteria trays, Styrofoam glasses to drink water out of. No knives came with our tray, we had to ask and got what looked like mini steak knives.

I would give Thairish 2.5 stars if I can. I used to come here pretty often (more than 3 years ago) because it was cheaper than the other Thai places in the area and the food is simple but good. However, now the inflated price of the food there isn't quite worth the food you get. The portions are indeed quite small (i.e. you'd get 4 pieces of vegetable/lots of rice/couple pieces of meat with the curry). But I love the curry sauces he makes (my favorite was the massamun)...it is simply delicious. The pad thai is modest, and it does give you a sense of home cooking. With that said, it is NOT worth the price that he charges for his food. It is a staple in the neighborhood, but there are better Thai places in the area that cost a bit more but also taste a lot better.

Thairish is exactly what you think when walking in: fast, tasty and you get your money's worth in quality. I love that place because you get that home-y feeling and the chef is always polite and chats with you as you wait.

Drier version of pad thai prepared by an adorable Thai man. Kerrigan's kooky laugh makes me smile. Known to be stingy with his tasty peanut sauce.

For me Thairish is a "swing and a miss". The owner/operator is rather rude and pushy. Food is marginal. Sauces are skimpy. While he was fixing my pad thai he got 2 more orders and just started adding noodles and ingredients to make one big skillet of food. Then when he divided it up, I got very little other than my shrimp and noodles. Almost no egg or garlic. Massaman curry had just enough sauce on it to call it a curry. Prices and serving sizes are decent but the food is just so-so.

I'm a fan of this restaurant's pan-fried style chicken pad thai! I believe Thairish was my first pad thai experience over 14 years ago (I worked in Mt. Vernon). My pad thai experiences later in life have always been compared to the pad thai at Thairish....nothing has come close to this pad thai, seriously! I'm not a fan of the super sweet and saucy pad thai that other restaurants serve. Either it's too sweet or too much of a peanut flavor (a little of that is fine, but not too much) for my taste. It's simple, cheap and fast! The crunchiness of the veggies and the bean sprouts is great. I love how people complain that the veggies are too big and "uncut"....come on people, cut them yourselves, you spoiled brats!! I'm sure half the people here who gave negative reviews are not even sure how to cook pad thai noodles themselves and to hear them critical of a one-man operation is just astounding. "Oh, he pre-cooks everything" blah blah blah...you try running a one man restaurant!! Anyway, I hesitated on giving this restaurant a fifth star only because the saltiness of my meals is inconsistent. Sometimes it's absolutely perfect in flavor and other times a bit too salty (but I still eat all of it!!). I always enjoy a nice crispy spring roll and Thai iced tea with my meal. Absolutely satisfying. I'm going there tonight to pick up dinner for me and my husband. Mmmmm! The owner is feisty and I love it! He's always been super nice to me, but I remember when a vegetarian friend of mine asked him to cook her meal in a separate wok different from the wok he cooks his meat dishes in - he basically just told her to get out and if she didn't like his cooking style that she shouldn't eat there! Lol.

So disappointing. I was excited for cheap take out Thai food. But that's just what it is. Cheap. They burned my eggs in my pad Thai. How is that acceptable to serve? I have not gone back here.

I love Thai food, so I was very thrilled to find this great "hole in the wall." It's the type of restaurant that you like coming back to time and again to satisfy your food cravings. As many have stated on here, it's a very simple restaurant, with a simple menu, and nothing fancy at all. But it's just what you want. The owner was great and you could talk to him while he made your food. I had the Chicken Pad Thai, which was addicting and flavorful. My cousin had the Masaman, which was a little too spicy for her. I ended up eating the rest of it. Both dishes were great. Thairish's food isn't very "saucy" but instead relies on more of a dry seasoning mix with small amounts of sauce. Great food, quick preparation, and very affordable.

We just ate at Thairish for the first time and really wanted it to be good. Like others, we really liked that it was owned by the chef and both he and the guy that took our order were super nice. The place was clean and service was quick. That being said, the food wasn't really good. We had pad thai which was really dry, a bit burnt and bland. We also had a green curry that was really, really watery with bland zucchini and carrots over minute rice. It was the most flavorless thai dish we've ever had. I'm sorry to say we won't be going back to give it a second chance.

Thairish is on my list for quick and tasty takeout when I am in the mood for a light no frills meal. Usually I get the chicken pad thai but the red curry is also quite good. The owner/chef takes care to make each order with pride and he smartly limits the menu to only a few manageable options.

    (3)
  • Jeff M.

I've been here a few times, and it's not terrible but it just doesn't have much to it. The pad thai is often a bit dry, and despite the fact I always ask for it really spicy it never comes out as such. Thankfully I order it as takeout so when I get back to my apartment I can add thai chili sauce to give it a bit more moisture and heat.

First time we ordered take out here the food was nothing special. We already noticed that the kitchen was dirty, the owner was wearing a disgusting apron, and the food made both of us feel sick afterwards (and I have a pretty strong stomach). Second time we went there we didn't even get to order because the service at this place is just horrible! The first time we already noticed the owner being rude to the guy taking our order but we didn't think much of it, but the second time the owner's behavior was so rude when we tried to order that we walked out without even ordering. He was yelling at the guy trying to take our order and he yelled at us as well, giving us the "talk to the hand" signal and yelling we had to "wait to talk". Excuse me?? I do not expect great service at a take out place but at least a little normal human interaction would be nice. What a horrible place, will never go back again

  • Isham K.

Don't get me wrong, 2 stars isn't terrible, it's based on a direct comparison between places like this and others in the area such as Little Spice or My Thai (sadly badly burned down right next door). For what you get, this place is a little pricey. This is a "hole in the wall" as everyone else has described, with close quarters, front row view to the "chef" cooking and very little (maybe 4/5) seating. We ordered a few dishes, Vegetable Spring Rolls, Pad Thai with Tofu, Vegetable Massaman Curry, and Extra Spicy Panang with chicken. Pad Thai - the standard by which to judge all Thai places, was bland and lacking in scallions, peanuts/peanutty taste and general Pad Thai-ness in general. Not to mention that the tofu was basically raw and tasteless. It was a decent noodle dish, just not a decent Pad Thai. The Massaman Curry was not as much of a let down, the vegetables were crisp and fresh, but a little light on the variety - also negative points on only white rice. As far as curries go, Panang is supposed to be somewhat spicy on its own, and we ordered it Extra Spicy. Needless to say, not so much. The "Extra Spicy" was a sprinkling of what I assume was cayenne pepper on top of the dish. The highlight of the meal was probably the chicken on the curry, but then again, there wasn't much else to highlight. I really wanted to like this place, but I will not be going back unless it's a dire Thai food emergency and I have no time.

(03/30/2011) A Mount Vernon institution and a great place to pick up some quick Thai food. They are small and have a limited menu. Everyone once in a while there's a great crabcake special, but my go-to is the pad thai with shrimp ($8.95): chewy (al dente) banh pho flat rice noodles, green onions, a little ginger, fish and soy sauces, scrambled egg, squirt of fresh lime juice and 3 big (U21-25) plump shrimp, a sprinkle of peanuts; sometimes there are bean sprouts, I think it depends on the season and availability. It's NOT a saucy, gloppy (peanut buttery) pad thai like you find in a lot of other places (especially those Americanized pan-Asian places); but I find it clean and simple, if a little salty. I like the curries (masaman is creamy and savory, panang has some good spice), but since the place is small (and there's only 1 owner/operator, Kerrigan Kittikul, quite the character), they do the "one protein-many sauces" method of prep, so the meats are pre-cooked and the veg pre-blanched and not in sauce. Wouldn't say it's the best, but overall, it's a place I keep coming back to and it's def a local business worth patronizing.

The food is served on what looks like school cafeteria trays, which would be cute except it's far too close to the truth. The food is pretty flavorless. It tastes like they have a vat for each kind of sauce and just ladle some-a that over generic unseasoned meat and/or vegetables. Portions are small. I can very rarely finish an entire entree by myself, but I did this time. My poor scrawny boy (who usually finishes my food) looked ready to devour the flower arrangement and ended up getting a sandwich somewhere else. Oh, and the iced coffee was bad!!! It was served with plain milk, not condensed milk, and you were supposed to stir your own sugar into the cold beverage! Yeah, that went awesome. It's kinda worth visiting- once- though, just to get a look at a really fantastic piece of artwork there. Someone drew a map of Bangkok merging with Baltimore. Very metatextual and cool.

As stated by other reviewers, this place is great! Its quick, cheap, and filling. The pad thai is very good--not that saucy, greasy stuff you get at other Thai places... This is light and tasty. I've also had the masaman curry--a medium red curry--which i highly recommend! And, no matter what the weather is, I always get the bean curd soup--the balance between the coconut milk and the lemon grass is so light and refreshing! Finish your meal with a Thai iced coffee--strong brewed coffee with sweetened condensed milk over ice--and you'll feel like a whole new person! If you're in the neighborhood, come check it out! You won't regret it!

They do not have pad see yu which is very strange for a thai place, i have to agrre with other reviwers that the food is very salty and my pad thai with chicken had very big pirces of chicken instrad of smaller ones that you could enjoy with your meal. I guess its ok if there are no other thai restaurants open to order from

I don't know if it was an off night or what, but this was literally the worst pad thai I've ever had. It was just noodles. No spice, no nothing. It tasted like plain noodles with a little bit of soy sauce. The "spicy" I requested was a dusting of red pepper on top. No peanuts, no eggs. Absolutely awful- I would never take the risk again!

My experience at Thairish started out with a lot of potential. The owner was friendly, the place was decently clean, the prices seemed reasonable, and the wall was decorated with Citypaper "Best Of" awards (although I think they were from 15 years ago). I get the impression that at one time, this place was really great. Nowadays, though, the food has a few problems. What I ordered: the pad thai What I got: extremely salty, burned noodles. I'm not just talking about a little burned--these noodles were reminiscent of salted charcoal. Oh yeah, and the chicken was dry and flavorless. Oh yeah, and there were no peanuts at all, no vegetables, except just a tiny pinch of sliced green onion. I have to say, I'm not that picky of an eater and I am more than happy to eat cheap, mediocre thai food (that's how much I like it). But this place is the worst. Please don't waste your time, money, or stomach capacity!

We ordered pad thai, green curry chicken and shrimp fried rice. They were good but not typical thai flavors. A very light sauce on the Pad Thai, a little too light for me. The green curry was tasty and I liked the fresh veggies. The shrimp fried rice was good. The shrimp were big. Again, it was different than what I have gotten at other restaurants but still tasty. The service was quick.

Kim is the man! He works this place as the only cook, and makes Thai food the way he likes it. If you don't like the way it is on the menu don't even think of asking for any changes to be made to your order. That's all good because in my opinion it's some of the best Thai food around. Very affordable and especially tasty ( not overly spicy). I usually order tofu pad Thai. Oh! His wife is Irish, that's why the place is called Thai-rish, not Thai-Reeeeesh. Thumbs up!

This place is great for lunch take-out. There isn't much seating and ambiance non-existent. I usually get a chicken curry dish, which I've always found tasty and filling. This is decent Thai food with friendly, quick service.

This place is probably great for take-out, but if you are craving really great Thai food, you can probably skip this place. Their red curry was pretty good and the service was FAST and affordable! Not much space for eating there.

This place is a Mt. Vernon institution; one which I have been proud to attend for years. The pad thai and the curries are excellent. When in season, try the unique crab cake made by Kim. There are more delicious and fancy Thai restaurants in the hood, but when accounting for simplicity and value, this place is #1. Don't show up too close to closing time, or you may get well deserved cranky service.

This place is my favorite take-out Thai place and has the BEST pad Thai ever... it is simple and basically is only good for carryout but its a good deal. Thairish's Pad Thai is different than most - its pan fried or something so it isn't mushy or slimy. Its saltier than normal pad thai's (which i like) and doesn't have an overwhelming peanut taste. the rest of the menu is simple but good. The red and green curries never disappoint. I probably take-out from Thairish several times a month and I'm still not sick of it. One note - its like Thai fast food so don't expect too much. It is yummy though!

Pretty good fast Thai. They've been here forever; it's a one chef one cashier type joint, great for carryout. Food is always good(not fancy) and they chef gives out cute cartoon calendars he makes himself on the holidays.

Their entrees are good, and the food is cheap and fast; however, don't get the soups. I got the tom yum gai and it tasted like hot water with some veggies thrown in. They're B.Y.O.B. (with no corking fee) so bring a bottle or six-pack.
