Came for a quick bite and ended up stay for almost 2 hours. Sunday happy hour options and pricing are perfect. We ordered grilled chicken sandwich, tuna melt, pretzel dogs, mussels, and french toast. We weren't all that pleased with the mussels, but everything else was great, ESPECIALLY the French toast. Drinks were on point!!! We definitely will visit again. Our server ORON was very professional and well-versed.

Decided to spend this rainy Saturday morning at Tavern on the Hill in Mt. Vernon. Given the reviews and a quick once-over the online menu, I had pretty much decided that this experience was going to consist of none other than your garden-variety diner/tavern-esque type of cuisine. I was right. I chose the Steak & Eggs, complete w/ a side of toast and homemade potatoes (my plate was unfortunately missing this last component, but I decided to let it slide as our waitress was new and flustered). The dish was very bland, to say the least. Absolutely nothing noteworthy. The steak was not great quality and the eggs were a little on the tough side. But, for a $15 steak dish, you can't be too picky, I guess. My honey chose The Cowboy Burger, which was great! Quality beef, topped with BBQ sauce, bacon, cheddar cheese, and onion rings. It also comes with a side of fries and a pickle spear. I would definitely come back and get this meal for myself. Since we came during weekend brunch hours, we were also able to partake in their $4 mimosa offering. Super yum. All in all, I would give TOTH another go, but would probably stick to the basics. Burgers, fries, and maybe their other breakfast offerings (they serve brekkie all day!). Solid 3-Star for The Cowboy for now.

This is your date night. This is your Sunday brunch, your happy hour. This is your quaint neighborhood goto spot to watch the Orioles. The place you bring your visiting friends and family. This is THE spot. The burgers are full and juicy and my date's was cooked to bloody red perfection! The Bubbie's Brisket is (dare I say?) better than my own grandmother's recipe! The toasty warm Challah bread is the winning touch on both these godly sandwiches. Added bonus... The friendly helpful staff will make you feel right at home.

I've been here for brunch twice. The food is simple and affordable. It is always cooked the way I want and tastes great. The first time I had the french toast that comes with a delicious anglaise that is a nice alternative to syrup. The next time I had a Belgian waffle. It was light and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Last but, certainly not least, they have huge mimosas for $4. Win!

I had the Greek salad with chicken and an "orange creamcicle" (super strong) . The salad was amazing and the drink was strong! Both qualities I deem necessary in a restaurant!! Service was great, they were super nice and friendly! The atmosphere is great! I definitely recommend this restaurant!

Gave this place a third try this past Friday. And it's still a solid 3 star establishment. With that being said, it wasn't that I was giving them a 3rd try, its more a case of dropping in here when you just want to be served while eating locally and do so with no wait. Again, I got the eggsplosion burger. But this time I asked for the egg to be fried instead of sunny side up. So much better. Just a typical frozen burger with toppings, fries came out cold but the server (not waiter) was more than accommodating to bring me fresh hot seasoned curly fries . Cousin got the reuben that she was disappointed with and wasted half of it. Now for the highlight of the meals. My friend got the french toast (breakfast all day) with cinnamon and homemade Anglaise sauce. Thankfully when we eat out we usually get shareable dishes. So glad we did this time because the french toast was definitely 5 star. They were melt in your mouth good and whatever that sauce is was divine. This place used to get at least a 4 stars from me simply because they stayed open until 2am and they serve breakfast all day (BONUS). There aren't too many places in Baltimore especially in the city where you can eat after midnight. Although the business hours still say 2am we went on a Saturday at around midnight and they were closed/closing. Can't comment on the bar section because I never ordered drinks here.

Surprisingly good! The service is great, and the burgers are yummy! Highly recommend being hungry if you want to enjoy their food; they serve a decent amount, even the salads are huge! Good balance between good flavor and nice portions.

Have been to this restaurant a couple times and have never been disappointed. The food is delicious, the prices are amazing and the service is great and very personal! I have only been there for breakfast but it is a go to spot that I love. They have all street parking, however I live in the neighborhood so I have always walked there. Depending on the time of day it shouldn't be to bad finding a spot.

Quesadilla: Solid quesadilla. Cripsy on the outside, melted on the in. There was a little flare on the inside as well. Maybe a few peppers and seasoning. Salsa was a little watery and guacamole was definitely not freshly made- ample amount of sour cream. I was definitely order it again BLT on Challah Bread: Outer outside edges of challah were minorly burnt. Not enough to majorly affect the taste of the sandwich. Good portion of bacon, balanced with enough lettuce and tomato. Didn't overdue it on the mayo. The simplicity and deliciousness of a BLT is something to be marveled at. It's what made bacon what it is today- a rock star. Inside was a bit older and no frills. Food is much better than you'd expect. You have to ask for a plastic bag. No like literally. They will give you a paper bag, and then point to a sign and say "You need to ask for a plastic bag". It's a little thing they're doing to encourage recycling. I'm sure a great place to grab a drink at night- my dining companion's brother is a regular. Service was friendly and very attentive.

I come here often and have had most of the basics on the menu. The hamburgers are always solid as are the salad and the fish and chips. The service is always friendly but sometimes slow if you have a large group. This comfortable neighborhood might be predictable, but that is not a bad thing.

Seriously, there is nothing here that isn't delish here. Staff is always cool, food is usually prompt, and the 2 for 1 mimosas are the best. The food is so good that my boyfriend wants to go there for his Bday Breakfast lol. One of his fav ways to start the day. And they have a great liquor selection and decent craft beers as well. in my experience, the only time we've had slow service was in the dining area. Sitting in the bar or out front has always been wonderful

Breakfast is delicious the bacon is really well done and the omlette are stuffed ! Very well priced Mimosas half price on Sundays

The food is just ok... I've been in their kitchen and it's extremely unsanitary. They have French fries just sitting out soaking in water near the trash can and dishwasher. Who knows what has been flung in there. The cooks don't wash their hands. I prefer City Cafe, Plates , Milk & Honey Market or Kyro's which are all nearby. It's not very clean...if you can get past the bathroom smell then you should be ok. Extremely slow service so if you want to order quickly you should sit at the bar where you can be seen.

Atmosphere was more diner-y than I expected. I thought it would be more like a tavern. The nachos I had were not good, a ton of cheeze-wiz on top and thats about it. The mimosa was delicious and is $3.50 all day Sunday. Overally I think I'd go somewhere else if I could go back in time.

(1/5/14) My typical bar was shockingly closed so while searching for another barstool to perch upon, I stumbled upon Tavern on the Hill. I had eaten here many times for breakfast when it was Howard's and just once for breakfast since it changed to Tavern but I'd never entered after dark. I was happily surprised with my experience. The menu had a nice variety of cocktails...delicious, right balance of alcohol and flavor. The food was really tasty as well. I had the spring apple salad....pungent blue cheese, tangy acrid balsamic vinaigrette, mixed greens, sweet cranberries, extremely satisfying. I definitely will revisit Tavern on the Hill the next time I wanted a sophisticated atmosphere to sip tasty drinks and have adult conversation.

Awesome service, yummy food at a great price. Living in the neighborhood I like to go there often for some breakfast, burger or my favorite, their spring salad. The place fills up I the weekend but seating is always easily available.

Service was really well, the staff was super friendly. While typing this review since I had not touched the burger the chef came out for a reason and made sure all was good with the burger. The waiter was really nice. Mimosa are amazing. Cheaply priced for amazing food and service.

Nice local tavern to get some bar food and drinks for a decent price. They offer daily specials, but I only remember Tuesday: $2 off burgers Wednesday half off classic reuben and Classic Rachel. So worth it! $5 only!! I came on a Wednesday so I tried their classic Rachel special. You get a choice of meat: brisket, corned beef, turkey, pastrami. Good portion of meat with Swiss cheese, slaw, thousand island on toasted bread and a side of chips. I got the turkey and it was moist and tasty with everything together. There was just the right amount of slaw, cheese and thousand island. A great combination of flavor in every bite! My friend got the same but with pastrami which she also enjoyed. Definitely recommend coming here for good food. You can also watch baseball and sports at the bar.

Very nice spot for a light (or heavy) dinner. A lot of good beer selections, and a variety of lighter fod, salads, and big greasy burgers. Everything we tried was very well done and from the dining room the cooks looked like pros, really concerned with how their food was prepared and presented.

After hearing great things, I was a bit underwhelmed by my lunch at the Tavern. I probably should have gone with my gut and ordered the French toast with creme Anglais, but I decided to be virtuous and order a salad. I had the taco salad, and it was just OK. The bowl it was in was tall and narrow, and it disrupted my salad dressing distribution. This was very upsetting! But it could be easily fixed with a different presentation. Also, I asked for the dressing on the side, so maybe it would have been better if they had put it on. The salad was unexciting. It only had chicken, avocado, and onion in it. Can a girl get some roasted corn or black beans? How about some shredded cheese? Pico de gallo??? We had the crab dip as an appetizer, and it was good, very rich. It could have had more actual crab though. Also the dip to bread ratio was off, a common crab dip issue. My fellow diners both enjoyed their meals, a burger and eggs. They are frequent patrons at the Tavern and say most things on the menu are great, so maybe I just made a bad choice. I will not rule out a return visit. Waiter and other staff were excellent, kept the coffee and water brimming!

My honey (who is from Balmer) says it's the best crab cake she's ever had. Food, drink, service excellent. If I lived in Mt. Vernon, this would be my place. This is what Yelp is for. If you like it, let people know. This place deserves to do well.

Went here with a group of 6 ladies last night. We got a table in the back room. I was surprised how crowded this place was. I'm not usually a fan of bar food, but I got the greek burger and it was excellent! Cooked medium, just like I ordered and topped with feta, tomatoes, cucumbers and avocado. I also asked what I could get instead of the fries that come on the said and they brought me a delicious sauteed squash and zucchini mix at no extra charge! The bartender, who was also our waiter, was one of the best I've ever had. My only complaints are that the room we sat in was very cold, and I was not a fan of the red wine being chilled. We could not warm up.

Nice, consistent and low key joint. The food is above par and the atmosphere is relaxed. The specialty hot dogs were surprisingly good and the burgers are always consistently good. Although the side order of onion rings were not what I would consider "plentiful". The chips and salsa were pretty disappointing however. Coming from Texas, I know I have a high standard for salsa, but even a casual enjoyer of this dipping appetizer would give this one a thumbs down. Unfortunately what was touted as salsa was nothing more than pico de gallo. Stale chips to boot. Although there weren't masterful "write home to mom" kind of food on the menu, it's certainly a place that I'll return to for basic grub and drinks.

I have been here several times, sometime just for drinks and other for dinner at the bar. The bartending staff is quite good, knowledgeable on the offerings and efficient on ordering and follow-up. The food itself is good, I have mainly had burgers, hot dogs, tater tots, etc. when there. It is never too crowded, they serve fairly late and the prices are pretty decent.

    (3)
  • Erica S.

I really, really want to like this place. The veggie burgers and salads are delicious. Drinks are cheap. But service is frankly terrible. The waiters are nonexistent and the bartenders can't make a dirty martini. It wouldn't take much for the restaurant to go from good to great. For now, it only gets 3 stars.

Fantastic LOCAL establishment! Tavern On The Hill is a massive improvement over the previous Howards, and superior to most "bar food" you can find in Mt. Vernon. This business is owned by husband and wife and their personal touches show. The service is excellent, the menu has greater variety than most, and their daily specials are outstanding. While the food menu is great, the bar menu is something truly special. Jeff is a REAL bartender, not just a college kid who happens to tend bar. The guy is our own Mt. Vernon Alcohol Artist, creating inspiring classic cocktails. If you're sick of "bars" and "bar food", go to Tavern, it's better and different.

For all of the great international options in Mount Vernon, there's a noticeable lack of options if you want a good burger and fries. Thankfully that's changed now that Tavern on the Hill is open. This is a pretty solid option with a wide variety of burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast (which they serve all day). My only gripe is that the patty itself could have used some more seasoning, so hopefully that's something they'll work on. Our server/bartender was insanely nice, and the prices are great. I had a burger and fries with a boh, and my wife had an omelette and sangria. The check came to $25. Can't beat that!

We came in with a party of 11 for my birthday dinner last night. The service was great and the beer and whiskey selections are quite extensive. We sat in the back room, where a HUGE flat screen adorned one wall. Playoff football was playing and the group sitting next to us was really into the game. They have a big menu and I found it to be very reasonably priced. Most of our group got burgers. A couple got the beef brisket, one got the meatloaf, hubby got a sandwich and my dad got a hot dog. I got the Chipotle Burger and had them make it with ground turkey. The flavor was spicy and delicious, but the patty itself was a little chintzy. It was really thin and not that great. Fries were decent. Overall the place was loud, but they had plenty of room for our large party and I enjoyed our time.

Will be giving this place another try to find out if it was an off day. I was not impressed the first time. The layout is great and there is a lot of space. It is good for groups. The food is my qualm. I came for Sunday brunch. It was a lot like a glorified bennigans. The pricing is good, but the menu was not to my taste.

A world class burger joint with Baltimore's Best New Bartender on the side. The sandwich's are very good too. The wife had the Turkey Ruben with turkey roasted in-house. She pronounced it delicious. I had the Cowboy Burger, a bacon cheeseburger with an onion ring and BBQ sauce that rocked. Even the kosher pickles on the side were memorable. Portion sizes are large to encourage take home boxes. They open at 8 AM and serve breakfast all day too. Really tasty food at reasonable prices. I picture myself becoming a regular here. While we were waiting for our food, Lee the owner asked if we would like be guinea pigs to sample the new reformulated crab dip, which he is constantly seeking to improve. It was a free cup of cheesey, crabby goodness! Tell 'em I sent you if you order the dip. Lee and staff couldn't have been nicer. The food disappeared off our plates. Really close to my wife's job. We found a parking space right at the front door. Could not have been a more pleasant experience. We both agree that this is a perfect after work place. She's bringing her workmates tomorrow. And we'll be back to sample the breakfast soon.

Fantastic bar -- bartender. What a great place to hang and the food is very good as well. I really like the brisket sandwich and the various hot dogs. Very friendly folks and Whiskey Wednesday is a blast. Brought my wife up on one of my business trips and she loved it as well. Had a choice of a lot of places but it's a great comfort spot.

I'm a big fan of burgers. I've been to a few of the "best of" places in Baltimore and have generally been disappointed (aside from Hamilton Tavern--it's the best). Stopped by Tavern on the Hill on a Tuesday night upon hearing rumblings of a juicy, flavorful burger. Happened to walk in at 8, right when trivia was starting. Decided to play, and it's best trivia I've been to in Baltimore. Really fun hosts, silly prizes and competitions, and free shots if you are closest to the right answer in the toss-up questions. Fun categories, too, and nothing too technical. Burger itself is just as I'd hoped--juicy, beefy, and cooked exactly medium-rare liked I asked. Buttery bun (brioche), and delicious hand-cut fries alongside. At least on trivia night (not sure about others), they have a bucket of Bohs (7 for $12). Seriously. Hamilton Tavern contender.

I was in town visiting my son and favorite daughter-in-law. They suggested Tavern on the Hill based on Yelp reviews. It was a Saturday night and we arrived around 9:30. I thought the place was going to be packed but it was empty; started to wonder where the Saturday night crowd went. The last time I was in Baltimore, around the Little Italy section, most of the restaurants stopped serving food at 10 PM, kind of early in my opinion. That was the other reason we went to Tavern as they serve food until 11 PM and the bar stays open later. Food was good, reasonably priced and fresh. Fries are made in house and were tasty. Calamari and Pot Sticker apps good, would rather have the pot stickers steamed, don't know if that's an option. Great dipping sauce for the two apps! Burgers cooked to order and tasty. Good coffee and as a visitor to Baltimore, I love the Natty Boh on tap. $2.50 for a cold draft beer to go with the burger, heaven! Baltimore, you've got a great neighborhood tavern here, come out and enjoy it! I'll certainly visit again, maybe try the breakfast next time.

Not sure how folks could take this place seriously when their burgers consist of frozen pre-made patties. No respectable restaurant would sell such burgers. If I wanted a frozen patty, I would go to the grocery store.

I've been coming here for a few weeks now and have become a new fan. Warm and relaxing environment, friendly staff. Owner is always there and always greets me with a smile and a "welcome back". Happy hour specials are great. The menu is priced fairly but the HH specials are generous for sure. I had breakfast with coffee and a Boh and it came to $11. I came back for 1/2 price pasta dinner and 3 Bohs and it was even cheaper. The ingredients are not the best I've seen but the chefs are able to get the most out of them and are not afraid to use a little bit of salt in their dishes. Salt, people! Salt! Remember when people used salt in cooking? It helps and I'm glad the chefs are not afraid to use it. Burgers are bangin' too. Cooked the right way and seasoned well. It's a solid burger option in the area for sure. This is a solid spot for me now. In fact, I think I'll knock off and go there now. BRB.

Just because a place has a decent beer and liquor list doesn't mean it's worthy of 4-5 stars. My glass of coke was the best thing I ordered. I had the calamari and chili fries. The calamari was mostly edible but the batter was too heavy and I felt like I was eating deep fried rings of rubber. Way too crunchy. Two sauces for the calamari doesn't change the fact that it's a bad product. The chili fries.. Where do I begin? Do not order the chili fries. You'll be disappointed. The chili looks straight out of a can with no other prep or additions. Kind of like how it was in elementary school. Had zero flavor and it was dry. The fries were already soggy from the juices and the dish wasn't even hot. Perhaps it was the first thing finished and it sat for several minutes. There was no cheese or anything. Just bad canned chili and soggy fries. I had 3 bites to try to convince myself they were worth eating. Nope. Won't be spending my money here again. Should have had my left over Chinese food from dinner last night.

Have been here a few times since it opened, and I'm impressed...it's the same space as old Howard's, but service is tops and the menu is superb. It's basic burgers and fries, except there's a huge selection of burgers and other good stuff like a menu of hot dogs, breakfast all day, and dinner items like pastas, salads, etc. Food always arrives having been plated nicely, showing attention to details matter. I've had the mussels also, which were very good. The bar is improved over the old place, and they have a good beer selection and Whiskey/Bourbon menu (Wednesdays are Whiskey Wednesdays..) I think they are doing Trivia Tuesdays too. Outdoor sidewalk seating or patio out back. Very happy we have a such good neighborhood standby now, a good place to hang, grab some drinks and enjoy a decent meal. PS--the 'too hot' wings might be the hottest in Baltimore...be warned.

5 stars for the service -3 stars for the food = 4 stars overall I've been to Tavern several times since it opened and each time I really had high hopes (for the food) but left feeling just kinda okay about the place. Didn't care for the french toast or the big cheese meltdown but the chicken tenders were pretty good. The reason I keep returning to Tavern is because the service is awesome. First off, Jeff is probably the best bartender in town. He's personable and makes a hell of a cocktail. A bunch of friends sat at the bar and we had a blast just shooting the breeze with him while drinking. Another time I sat at a table and my server was named Lexi. She was HILARIOUS!! Seriously, so much fun... if the experience was a ten then her presence as our waitress easily made it a 12. Loved her. Also, the owner is chill and down to earth. Very cool. I'll keep returning to Tavern as long as the service is so top notch.

A good, basic neighborhood bar with a wide variety of American bar food favorites. During a trip to TOTG on a Sunday afternoon, I ordered the Chicken Taco Salad and I was very satisfied with it. The kitchen was very good about making it exactly as I ordered it. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive, and the prices were reasonable. I will be adding this to my list of regular places in Mount Vernon to check out.

The Tavern on the Hill experience is delightful. Breakfast is served all day here, and is good enough to compel even the most traditional eaters to enjoy French Toast after sunset. Speaking of French Toast, there is no need to add syrup to Tavern's heavenly helping of pancake's cousin. Already drizzled on the French Toast is a creamy caramel sauce concocted with smile-inducing flavor. Seriously. You'll smile after you take a bite of the French Toast. Coffee is a staple breakfast beverage, which is botched by far too many restaurants. Tavern's is delicious. Drink it black. Cream is a frill this coffee can do without, just like the syrup on the French Toast. Omelets are $7, delectable, and include as many toppings as you care to eat. Recognizing my palpable excitement over the possibilities, the waiter wisely asked which of the dozen toppings I did not want in my omelet. The servers are courteous, congenial, and even cheeky if the mood is right. This review would include a comment on this restaurant's dinner offerings, but the quality of the breakfast has prevented the reviewer from exploring more of the menu.

(09/09/2013) Tavern on the Hill replaces the former Howard's of Mount Vernon (known for decent food and flaky service). The menu is pretty much your straight up pub grub with a little window dressing. Love the "breakfast all day" option. We started with 2 nosh off the appetizer menu, both tasty and hit that drunken trifecta of fat, salt, starch: Loaded Tots (with bacon and cheddar) and Pretzel Dogs (lil' smokies in a tender, browned chewy pretzel dough with a side of yellow mustard); can't really go wrong. Burgers were popular and came with fanciful toppings, making them architecturally challenging (onion ring, anyone?). Our table had 2 variations of the classic Reuben (one with turkey, one with corned beef, the menu also says they offer pastrami, but our server was unaware of any options at all). Burger eaters were asked how they liked their burgers (ranged from medium to medium well), but all burgers pretty much came to the table well done. Reubens had a good amount of decent quality meat, sauerkraut and dressing (missing the usual cheese), but were under-browned (mine looked like it had only been cooked on one side, the other was moist and getting soggy). A veggie burger ended up coming to the table pretty much the exact opposite of how it was ordered (with nothing it was supposed to come with and everything it wasn't). Service still maintains that dingbat quality, but everyone was very friendly and tried very hard (they just don't instill a lot of confidence that they're going to get it right the first time around). The outdoor patio is a boon in pleasant weather (a touch too close to the trash cans by the kitchen). The expansion in recent years opens up a lot of space inside. We totally welcome the late night dining hours, something desperately needed in Mt. Vernon (one can only have so many 7-11 beef patties). Hope the new format works out for them and us.

Absolutely love this place! I usually go here on weekend mornings for brunch. Compared with anything in the near vicinity, you will not find better food for the price. Midweek dinner cooker's block? Tavern on the hill has you covered. I almost feel like the bar needs its own yelp page. I don't mean that in a bad way, quite the contrary. The bar here is so amazing it need its own set of five stars. Jeff is constantly thinking up tasty new drinks, even on the fly. He has worked hard to create a beautiful whiskey selection. I love going here. Every friend I introduce to this restaurant falls in love too. If you are debating about trying this place, stop, just go! You will thank me.

After months of walking by, I finally went here with some friends who were visiting from out of town. It was amazing! We had an excellent waitress (though it seems like the whole staff is pretty great). Then there's the food: omelets, fresh waffles, burgers - all fresh and delicious. And affordable! Oh, did I mention they make a mean Bloody Mary? I am serious when I say this is my new favorite brunch spot.

I have been going to tavern on the hill since they opened. I am usually greeted by one of the friendly owners. The wait staff is very friendly and the food is reasonably inexpensive. I am a early riser and I really enjoy that they are open at 730 AM. I can sit down and have great breakfast and a nice tasty mimosa to start my busy weekend. In summary great food, great service for a great buck!

On a trip this weekend exploring Baltimore as I'm moving here mid-February, I found this restaurant on Yelp to try for brunch. I had the Hangover Omelette which was awesome with the hot sauce! My friend had a customized omelette, we split a plate of the Belgian waffles (also incredible) and we got half-priced Mimosas because they were celebrating their 6 month anniversary today. The owner (Leo I think was his name) is really nice. He came over to our table and had a conversation with us about our move, giving us a bit of history about Natty Boh (of which we had not heard of before) and then also let us try The Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, which is really good! The restaurant/bar is in an excellent location and I can easily see this becoming a regular spot for me. If you are visiting or moving to Baltimore, I'd highly recommend you visit the Tavern and see for yourself.

This place is a great, local pub that has a welcoming environment, solid burgers, and a decent beer selection. The owner is there and seating almost every night and the crowd is an interesting mix of young people and people from the neighborhood who have been going there for years before it was refurbished and renamed Tavern On The Hill. I'd recommend it if you're looking for an unassuming, causal place to grab a beer or some pub food.

Love this place! Tavern on the Hill is located in my neighborhood and it is an excellent addition! This is an "anytime" in my opinion. I've gone here for breakfast with my boyfriend and I've been there for dinner and drinks with my girlfriends. The new owners are really friendly and I am big on customer service. Must try place :-)

The good: The price is right. The service is friendly. The ambiance is decent for a diner. Now the bad, and there's a lot of bad, but I'll focus on the one egregious problem which leads me to never return: food hygiene. I've been there post renovation twice now. Both times I have had a breakfast with pancakes. The first time my pancakes tasted like onions. The second time my pancakes tasted like peppers AND onions. Never again. If they're not cleaning their griddle, no one should be eating there. That's disgusting. As dingy as the old place was, my pancakes never tasted like onions and peppers. 100% unacceptable, and do not believe the 4 star rating on here.

Awesome. Staff was helpful and welcoming. Price and food was spot on. If you want a great breakfast with no wait, this is your place.

This place is great! The bartender is so cool! He made me an "Angry Balls" sooo good, it was a mixture of hard cider and fireball whiskey. Adorable. I've only had the appetizer's but they are really good as well. It just feels nice being in this bar, I feel welcomed.

From the moment I walked in the door, I felt like family. The 1/2 lb crabcake was packed with flavor and I had a Kentucky Bourbon Ale to die for! These are real people, making a real effort. When you find a genuine place like this, you have to support it. I will come back to this place every time I'm in Baltimore.

An excellent find. We sat outside on a beautiful evening. Our waitress was so nice and helpful 3 of us ordered Rachel's. One turkey, one pastrami and one brisket. Each one was flavorful and just right. Can't wait to go back and get it again. My husband got brisket with mashed potatoes and reported the meat was chewy and not tender. Sandwiches were $9.99 brisket dinner was $15.99. We didn't get dessert, but it looked good. Only drawback was that the restaurant is not handicapped accessible - it is in an older building with steps leading to it.

Really enjoyed a recent visit here. Had one of the hot dogs, which was pretty good... Hand cut fries were great and well worth the up charge. Burgers looked good, and breakfast all day will definitely draw me back. Mixed drink menu was interesting, but I was definitely more interested in the bourbons. Nice selection, enjoyed both a flight and an old fashioned. Great service, too. Will definitely return.

Used to come here when it was Howards. 4th time here since the new name. Food is good. Service isn't. Got drinks from the bar but never water. Food came out before we ever had silverware or napkins. Guy dropping off the food had to say something. Finished my drink. They never asked how the food was or if we wanted another round. Still never got a glass of water. Bartender was not only slinging drinks but serving that whole half of the restaurant. Meanwhile, wait staff was standing around talking to each other. Not one person ever made eye contact. Had to buy a bottle of water at the grocery on the corner because I was so thirsty. Will not go again.

Went here for brunch; the food, coffee and prices were excellent. The staff was unable to handle our large and ever-expanding group. It took 30 minutes to get coffee and order food and another 30 minutes until the food arrived. I would absolutely return with a smaller group.

Very friendly, characterful neighborhood restaurant with a bar. Sunday brunch .. nice mimosa, great veggie omelet, awesome almond cake. Waitress was great, shared helpful opinions on the menu, was there when you needed her but not when you didn't. Good food and drinks and extremely reasonable prices. We'll be back.

We decided to check out this place for breakfast, and it did not disappoint! The food was delicious, service was excellent, and the prices were reasonable. The owner came to check on us several times, which was appreciated. Tavern on the Hill has waffles Leslie Knope would approve of.

I have been going to tavern on the hill for well over a year now especially on weekends. I usually do once a week as well. Weekends I always call in the order and will go pick it up. On a few occasions, my order has been incorrect, but I was always too lazy to call in about it once I got home. but since that time, I always make sure to check my order before I leave the tavern on the hill just to ensure that the order is correct. So I called in for the hangover breakfast, the gentleman on the phone told me 9.70 which is cool. I took a ten dollar bill and proceeded to go pick up my food. When I got there, older dirty blond haired woman on the thin side pulled my ticket and told how much I owed, no problem, except I asked to see the order prior to paying for it. she went to the other side to get it, it was already bagged. So as I open the box she says that the guy charged me incorrectly and that I in fact, owed more money $1.48 since more. Except this is what I have been paying for this menu item forever. In any case, I said I didn't have additional money, she said you don't even have an $1.00? I replied no, just brought the ten because I was told the cost was $9.70. she then that the house was going to keep the thirty cents. I didn't balk at that, I just left and made a decision that if the house needed the thirty cents so badly that they were willing to lose a steady customer, I was cool with that. The thing is overall the service in this place has been pretty good, even when the food hasn't been. That's really why I have continued to patronize it. This morning, July 26th service sucked and the house can keep it.

Friends of mine have spent their Sunday afternoons here, and suggested it for a Friday night dinner. It was fabulous. I had a very satisfying black bean burger that was both tasty and perfectly sized. My spouse had a bison burger that was delighful and perfectly prepared. My friends split a mushroom ravoli dish that they really enjoyed. However, what made the evening a treat was our waiter, Jean. He was fun, attentive and entertaining. Definitely looking forward to going back, especially when Jean is there!

Had lunch here today and was quite surprised by the food!! It's very good!! The hand cut fries were awesome and the fact you can see into the kitchen is kinda cool!! I would recommend this place to anyone in the area and will be coming back myself!!!

We went here with a group for brunch. $4 large mimosas on Sundays that can't be beat. All of us ordered different things and everyone was extremely happy with their order. Great service, good food and great value. The service was on point and all around wonderful. If you go, request Texas because she's the best.

I didn't care too much for this place. I ordered some old bay wings, a side salad & a margarita. The wings were pretty good.(ordered them well done.) But, the margarita was absolutely horrific.( You guys already know that I'm a margarita snob lol) It tasted as if it had canned orange juice concentrate in it. When I looked over the bill, I saw the bartender assumed that I wanted the well marg and served me that. It was plain bad, but I don't waste alcohol, so I certainly drank it. For half of the meal, my water sat with a gnat in it until the server/bartender/whatever else he was that night, finally returned to the table for me to request a new one. Meh, I just didn't fancy this place. The food I ordered doesn't warrant a return....at least not one on my own accord. :-\

Walked in with my ex last week for a late night snack. We were immediately seated and given menus. I love a place that can do breakfast all day and I ordered a simple bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. My ex ordered some fries that came in a cone shape contraption. The food was good. At first my bacon was undercooked, but my waiter was nice enough after I told her to give me correctly cooked bacon. Also the waiter we had always made sure our drinks were filled at all times without us asking. I love when a server does that. The atmosphere was nice and there was a guy playing guitar behind us that added to the experience. I could see me going here on a date night. It wasn't crowded and the noise level was decent. I will be back soon.

Why only 3 1/2 stars? Their ham is from Virginia! You know, as in Virginia ham! It's the best ham! I don't even ever get excited over ham, but this ham is the best! Oh, and tater tots for breakfast? Sure why not? And I said all along, this is a 4 year plan. Don't read too much into Thursday night. But still keep your fingers crossed.

Was visiting from New York for the weekend and stumbled on this place. Our waitress Ms. Texas was AWESOME. What a nice lady! Now on the food. It was delicious....I had the delicious French Toast and my husband had a mushroom omelet which he devoured :) It was a real nice find. The vibe was so cool and welcoming and had a mom and pop feeling. Would definitely go back again whenever in town.

I apologize in advance for the lengthy review, but I believe that the more information, the better when choosing a restaurant especially since there are hundreds in the Baltimore area from which to choose. After hearing from several relatives about how great this place is, we made the trek from Bel Air to Mount Vernon to visit Tavern On The Hill for lunch. We parked about a block away (free on Eager Street) and walked a block to the restaurant. Upon walking in the door, we were warmly greeted by Lee, who identified himself as the owner and who talked with us like he has known us for years. He took us to our table and we sat down. We asked him several questions about the restaurant and what he recommends. Our server came up to our table and asked what we wanted to drink, We all asked for water with lemon and that came right out. But then, the server turned and began to walk away. I stopped him and asked if we could order appetizers from him. I made a mental note to ask the owner the next time he walked by if the server was new. It's not often that you'll receive your drinks and not get immediately asked if you would like an appetizer or if you're ready to order. We ordered the chicken pot stickers and the Old Bay wings as appetizers and also our entrees (all burgers of different variety). As we waited for the orders to come out, we watched Lee greet with a smile each person who came through the door, thanking and welcoming them to the place. Those who were leaving were approached the same way, with a smile and a sincere thanks. We were all impressed with his demeanor, which is something we feel can make or break a restaurant. If the food is good, but we're treated like cattle, we tend not to revisit the business. Lee came back to our table to ask if we had everything we needed. At this point, it had been about 20 minutes since we ordered the appetizers and Lee apologized and rushed back to the kitchen to see what the holdup was. He came out and explained that someone in the kitchen made an error in judgement and that the appetizers would be coming right out. He also told us that our server had just started working there, which to me explained his previous walking away from our table just before we ordered the appetizers. My wife and daughter ordered mimosas and they were quickly made, but sat on the edge of the bar for several minutes before our server noticed them. We also noticed a blond-haired woman scurrying around the restaurant, visiting each section and hovering over the stations and waitstaff. Lee later told us that her name is Mary and that she's a restaurant veteran whose supervision and obsession with food preparation and customer service is the driving force behind the operations there. The pot stickers and chicken wings came out and we dug in. The pot stickers were cooked well and very flavorful, served with a glaze-style sauce for dipping. The chicken wings were big and hot, but seemed to have a little too salty. It could have been my perception, as I had just tasted the pot sticker sauce, which was just a little sweet. A few minutes later, our burgers came out. They were huge and well-appointed. I had ordered mine well-done and my wife and daughter ordered theirs medium. My daughter substituted her fries for asparagus. As I was eating my burger, my wife and daughter mentioned that there burgers were very tasty but that they were both well-done. They opted not to say anything to the server. As we ate our meal, we talked about the atmosphere there and agreed that it was relaxing, busy without being loud and that the owner and waitstaff treated every customer like old friends. It was obvious that this establishment had earned its place as a welcome addition to the neighborhood. As we finished our meal, Lee approached us one last time to ask if everything was good and our server gave us our bill. We were all pleasantly surprised to find that it was a lot less than we thought it would be. The food is really well-priced, especially for how much you get. I gave four stars for this first visit only because it wouldn't be fair to not count the kitchen snafu and the server's developing-but-not-there-yet observational skills. We will definitely come back and try some of the other offerings. It's been a long time since we've visited a place that has the rare trifecta of great food, fair prices and friendly family-like ownership and waitstaff.

Surprisingly good veggie burgers and salads. The bar is decent but not the best. The food and the location make it worth it because there aren't many restaurants on the Cathedral St side of Mount Vernon.

SOOOO much more professional and inviting than before. I would occasionally go to Howard's, but this is the improvement they needed. The service, food and drinks are consistent. When friends/family come to visit, I bring them to Tavern. Good service, warm owners and good food.

4 stars?!! Are you kidding me yelpers? Is this a joke.. I thought you actually ranked a place based on the quality of their food? Maybe I went on an off day but my experience at Tavern on the Hill was up there with the worst. I came here yesterday for lunch. I ordered the Italian sausage sandwich special with peppers, onions, lettuce and mushrooms (with fries). Pretty simple order, right? For starters, the sausage tasted rancid... like BAD! The fries were completely soggy and under-cooked and the vegetables were season-less. Plus, I was missing the mushrooms. The fact that the cooks couldn't figure out that they were serving me rancid sausage, The guy at the counter (seemingly the manager) sincerely apologized for the sausage and asked me if I wanted something else. As I was looking through the menu, he suggested I try their burgers. As I'm standing there watching the cook prepare my 2nd lunch, I noticed that those "great" burgers were just prepackaged patties you buy from the grocery store... The fries were even worse this time around.. no seasoning whatsoever... soggier than a wet spongeSince this was a "Greek burger" it was topped with a few veggies and feta. But overall I'd say this was one of the worst burgers I've ever had. I was just too hungry to shclep back and return my meal again. But I feel like they serve better burgers in prison. You couldn't pay me to return here. The cooks have no freaking idea what their doing. They were yelling at each other right in front of me when I placed my first order. Everyone seemed miserable too. Just complaining about each other, etc. It saddens me that someone put a lot of money into renovating this place only to have it produce crappy food like this. Oh well, maybe they'll get their act together in the future.

I live down the street from Tavern and come here all the time. My experience has always been wonderful and I have had a little bit of everything off the menu. Breakfast is fantastic (definitely try the waffle with the "special sauce"!), salads for lunch or a light dinner are great (my favorite: chicken taco salad), burgers and heavier things like alfredo pasta, steak, etc... are delicious as well. The desserts from the dessert display are always awesome (especially the RED VELVET cake, you simply must try it). Service is good, prices are good, people are friendly. Lee the owner is great and makes an effort to remember his customers. Tavern has definitely become the neighborhood "Cheers" - a favorite spot to go where everybody knows your name.

Wonderful place to stop in for lunch. Good prices and delicious food. Had the blackened tuna club, and it came out piping hot and full of flavor. Service took a little while, but was definitely worth it. Not a Baltimore native myself, but I'll definitely stop by again if I'm in the area.

Great place! Modern looking, awesome atmosphere. The staff are very professional and attentive which is excellent. Even the owner passed by to greet me and ask if I needed anything. I had breakfast and the omelette was delicious, just the way I like it! Definitely will come back next weekend when I come to Baltimore!

Decided to check this place out based on Yelp reviews. Location- In the Mt. vernon area, and honestly, I've never spent much time there. But, you almost feel like you're in a smaller section of Manhattan. So much potential and hopefully, things will continue to improve. Guess they have been opened for about 6 months and underwent a renovation. Street parking available. Menu- comfort food done well.. the motto of one of the owners. I'd agree. They seem to have a lot of choices and even if basic food, good ingredients and proper preparation are key. Their bar menu was quite diverse and have nice selection of bourbon too (saw Pappy 10 or 12 on the menu) The grilled ham and cheese was tasty, buttered crunchy bread served with hand cut fries. My gf had some kind of hot dog and chili sauce and she barely put it down to chat. We also shared some pancakes which were moist and a generous portion. We'll definitely go back and maybe even check out dinner sometime. It's sandwiched right between Milk and Honey and City Cafe. Could Baltimore's good food revolution be starting? Keeping my fingers crossed.

Worst breakfast of my life. I wish I could regurgitate it. The home fries were at least a day old and possibly fried multiple times. The eggs were the liquid kind in a box. The wheat bread is the kind that is basically white bread. The service was good.

So convenient for my apartment, really great food- The Chipotle Burger and Taco Salad are great. The reason I give it 3 stars is service for when you sit down. Normally when I go in, it's a little slow and laxadazical. Recently I sat at the bar, 5 people in the bartenders section, it took 5 minutes for me to get his attention, to just ask for a menu. It took another 5 minutes of him sitting there to actually get a menu. Which was flopped in front of me and my plea for a drink was ignored. After another minute or so I finally got the attention for a drink. The food took close to half an hour after ordering, I'll quit my bitching there because the burger was great, but the guy behind the bar was bush league. I can appreciate a person being in the weeds, but this was not the case. As I said, this was just an experience, I've always enjoyed the food, but less than likely I'd spend another dollar at the bar.

Overrated and Average at best. Nothing to brag about. The food wasn't bad, just lackluster (especially for a $12 burger). The nachos that we shared for an appetizer was smothered in warm liquid nacho cheese (the kind you used to get at the roller skating rink, or a ball game) accompanied by straight out the pouch guacamole. Service was great tho!

    (2)
  • Jacob B.

Our server was great! But the food is just mediocre. Lots of options but the chef and kitchen is BASIC. We got the nachos for our appetizer.... Fancy name.... Huge let down. Canned cheese, canned salsa, and guacamole that came from a bag. Oh but the chips are multicolored....... Yaaaay! Definitely need some help with these. Our burgers were kinda good, like they could have been better with some more mushrooms (mushroom Swiss burger) and grilled onions maybe. Again our server(Renee) was awesome. But the kitchen staff needs some motivation.

What a great little neighborhood bar! One of the few bars in Baltimore with an appropriate noise level. They don't take reservations but we showed up on a Friday night at 6pm and had no trouble finding a table for 4.5. The ambiance is simple but perfect for conversation and a baby. Our server, who was the sous chef and was filling in for a server, was extremely friendly and enthusiastic. I got a margarita which was delicious and my husband and friends were happy with the beer selection. For food, we shared the pretzel bites, which were good and then we all got burgers and substituted Roseda meat in all - mine a chipotle burger and my husbands, the blue moon. Both burgers were perfectly cooked and delicious. Probably among the top 5 burgers in Baltimore. For dessert, we shared the candy explosion which was just ok. Nothing to remember the night by. Overall, highly recommended especially if you're a burger aficionado.

Very overrated. Tavern on the Hill is a hybrid bar/diner. One of their best qualities is that they're open until crazy late. I got there at 10PM and there was a decent amount of people. I sat at the bar and ordered breakfast. I ordered the "Healthy Choice" which reads as "Two egg whites over spinach and tomatoes and topped with avocado." I don't know why, but I expected ordinary spinach, not spinach leaves. I was also expecting them to chop up the tomatoes. Instead, they pretty much gave me a salad with two egg whites on top of it. It was pretty disgusting because you really can't put ketchup on it, because it's like putting ketchup on a salad. I also ordered the home fries, which were a small portion, but were good. The crowd seemed like it could be fun. The bartender was really slow to take my order and would disappear for long stretches of time. It wouldn't surprise me if I update this review at a later time. I wouldn't come here and try to order anything healthy, and I suspect that if I came here and ordered normal bar food that I would like it more than what I ordred. On the bright side, that lousy meal only cost me $7 and change.

Formerly the old Howards, this is a great neighborhood bar. I absolutely love it here. I had the pleasure of having Sunday brunch for my birthday here. Everything on the menu was absolutely delicious. From the breakfast to the burgers, you cannot go wrong. The Greek burger was cooked to perfection. They also have great omelette's as well. Portion sizes are large to encourage take home boxes. They open at 8 AM and serve breakfast all day too. Really tasty food at reasonable prices. The desserts are to die for too. The toasted almond cake and the pumpkin cheesecake are really delicious. I picture myself becoming a regular here. Lee and staff couldn't have been nicer. Could not have been a more pleasant experience friends agree this is a go to spot in Mount Vernon for great food and great customer services.

I was really excited about giving this place a try. My girlfriend and I live nearby and ended up getting some of the worse customer service that we have ever had. The food was ok but the way that we were treated took away from the whole experience and we will never give them anymore of our business.

I came here for breakfast and it was delightful. The coffee was good and strong, not bitter - my friend was hoping for fresh OJ but they only have refrigerated juices. That would be a nice addition for sure, I normally don't drink juice but do when it is fresh squeezed. That was really the only disappointment. My friend's sunny side up eggs were done perfectly, her pancake was crispy around the edges, and my waffles were fantastic. We were more than full - I didn't even finish my waffles, they were so filling. And the bill came out to about $10 / person, which is unusual even for breakfast. Nothing on the breakfast menu is over $8, but the rest of the menu looked moderately priced. I will definitely be back for dinner. Why five stars? Because our server rocked, the food was not too expensive, and it was pretty good! The only thing that confuses me is the "on the Hill" part - it's not really on a hill.

This place has been great the few times I have gone. Consistently, the servers and owners are cordial and super happy to accommodate. The menu has a great selection and the food is worth it! The prices are right and the quality surpasses it. The breakfast is very good, and I just love that it is served all day. The Old Bay wings were so crispy and flavorful. The bartender, Jeff, is super informative and loves trying out his new cocktail concoctions. He definitely enjoys the feedback. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for a nice neighborhood restaurant that delivers what it promises and doesn't disappoint.

Review is for breakfast only. Located just three blocks from The Walters Art Museum in Mount Vernon, Tavern on the Hill is a nice spot to grab a quick, simple breakfast before the museum opens. Nothing fancy - they offer a basic breakfast menu including breakfast sandwiches which you can order as wraps instead. Waffles are delicous and the home fries (I ordered a side of them extra crispy) were perfectly seasoned - no need to add salt, pepper, or (my standard go to) hot sauce. Our server was quick and very polite. Would definitely go back.

stopped by on a Saturday night around 6 pm. Everything inside is pretty new and there are lots of seats including some outdoor seating in the back. There are some flat screen TVs scattered throughout the place to watch games. The place wasn't very busy when we got there and were seated immediately. Sampler - ($13) came with pigs in a blanket, onion rings fried in beer batter, and chicken tenders. Good for 4 people. Solid appetizer. Roseda burger - ($13) waitress said it was their most popular item. It was good but didn't blow me away. I'd probably prefer Mick O'Sheas burger over this one. Overall, this is a great place to bring a large group of friends. Our waitress was really nice and you could the place is putting some emphasis on the service. I'd come back to check out their breakfast food, which they serve all day.

Top notch! I love this place! I have been coming here for a long time, and it keeps getting better and better. Great comfort food at a reasonable price. Nice bar and good selection. Also nice for breakfast. The staff is super friendly. It is our neighborhood spot.

I actually love this place. The food is really good and they have great customer service. If you are really hungry, do not go for brunch on the weekends. It's pretty ridiculous, You're better off going to Eddies and making your own breakfast.

This place is authentic, clean and friendly. Crab cake and mussels were fresh with a hunk of bread that had to be homemade. Service was awesome, water glass and coffee always full. Sorry we didn't catch the whiskey flavored ribs on Wednesdays, but left town b4 then.

There's a lot of good things to say about Tavern on the Hill. Love that there's a bar area and TV's. Love that there's an all day breakfast option (and they're good!). Love that prices here are relatively inexpensive. What could be better? Seems to me that there are inexperienced wait staff. Missing condiments, partial orders, and billing the wrong table. Nonetheless, this place deserves another shot sometime. The manager was pretty professional and tried to address these issues with his business card.

My new favorite in Mt Vernon. Sat by the window. 1/2 priced mimosas on Sunday when we went. Both meals were excellent and cooked perfectly. Carl the bartender was excellent, friendly, and very attentive. Will definitely be frequenting this establishment!!! Can't wait to try more of the menu. Love the atmosphere. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Came for a quick in and out happy hour. Sat at the bar and got a few quick mixed drinks. The bartender was quick and easy to work with to get menu and drinks. They have a separate happy hour menu that isn't on the main menu that's on their website. Several select $5 apps and the typical $2.50 or $3 well drinks. There was not much of a beer selection. Maybe 4 beers on draft, a bit more in bottle. The only two I can remember are heavy seas and a kentucky bourbon beer. Ended up going over to the Owl Bar to catch my beer fix. Not that far of a walk. The loaded tots are a must. I'd come back for a plate of those.

Burger or Hamburger is savored as the most desired fast food meal in the United States. A hamburger is basically a sandwich prepared by stuffing ground meat patty, generally beef, between two slices of a bun cut in half. Hamburger is also famous for its seasoning. Most popular condiments used in hamburgers in the United States are mustard, mayonnaise, and ketchup. Besides ground meat patty, hamburgers are also stuffed with lettuce, onions, tomato slices, pickles, and cheese.

Hamburgers are also categorized into two types in the United States. Fast food hamburger and individual hamburgers served at restaurants are two basic types of burgers served in the United States. The individual hamburgers served at restaurants are prepared using everything including lettuce, onion, tomato, and sliced pickles as well as melted cheese on the patty or crumbled on top. American restaurants also serve veggie burgers for those who don't relish meat. Cheeseburgers are also hot favorite in the United States.

McDonalds is the most popular fast food burger restaurant serving different types of burgers in the United States.
