Love the happy hour deals! The sushi is solid and every time I go, I thoroughly enjoy it. Also really liked the pad thai and the steamed gyoza.

Like anything "pan-Asian"? Maybe a little bit of soy sauce, some nori, and call it sushi? Didn't have too high of expectations coming in, but food here was meh. Service spot on, but what usually makes me happy and brings me back is the quality of the food...and it just wasn't great. Sigh. When will legit sushi come to Bmore?

This is a mixed review..."i'm torn" The food was yummy--sushi nice and fresh and the shrimp lo mein was delicious. Disappointments-- They have a great Happy Hour on food and drinks but with a groupon cant use HH. That sucks. Also, my bf food came out before mine....thats not kosher! Overall I would come back because the food was the bomb.

It is SO rare that service at a restaurant with decent food turns me off so much that I won't return. But unfortunately that is what I experienced when I tried out Shiso Tavern. We were seated at a high table behind the bar area. It was a weekday night and medium busy. Our server was an apathetic chum who expressed to us how much he clearly hate his job. He never introduced himself so I don't know his name. We ordered a few rolls, then decided we were still hungry. It took us 10 minutes to hunt him down to order a few extra rolls. He treated us like that was a ridiculous request. (ordering sushi rolls at a sushi restaurant, GASP!) We waited and chatted and 25 minutes later our rolls STILL weren't there! At this point we decided we should just grab the check and bounce. We tell him to cancel the rolls bc it was taking so long. He does "your rolls are the next ones up!" (He had been telling us that for a while). Instead of bringing our check, he comes back 5 minutes later with the cancelled rolls and goes "are you SURE you don't want these? i just had them made and they are already on your bill." SPEECHLESS. We again confirmed that we were leaving and paid the check. Needless to say, I did enjoy the food, especially the rainbow roll but I will NOT be returning to a restaurant after such a genuinely unpleasant experience.

I visited Shiso with some girlfriends for Sunday Brunch and a much needed girl talk chat session and was less than impressed. My conversation with my girlfriends was spectacular, however, the food was nothing to write home about (nothing horrible, but nothing awesome as well). Shiso does not really have your "typical" brunch-like food selections, which is a heads up in case that is what you are looking for. The service was terrible. Tom the bartender was the only server on a relatively busy Sunday, and he had some odd chip on his shoulder (i.e. gave attitude for no apparent reason). I am not sure if he was hung over or what, but he clearly lacked an understanding of basic customer service principles. If given an opportunity to eat here again, I'd definitely pass & unless you like wasting your money on mediocre food and substandard service, you should pass on Shiso, too.

My boyfriend and I live in Canton about 3 streets over from this place. We've ordered from here many times. Tonight the first order delivered was nearly an hour late and the food mediocre. However, when we called to tell them the problem, they let us reorder. The food came back delicious and PROMPTLY...reminding us why on week night when we're not in the mood to cook, we can depend on this sushi place to leave us happy customers.

I checked out this place over the weekend for appetizers before eating at Nacho Mama's (2 hour wait). I must say, I was quite impressed. No wait, fast service..and our server (a younger guy), was great! The prices are a little high, but I don't mind paying, if the service and food is good. Which, in this case...it was! I recommend Shiso Tavern to anyone who likes good sushi in a friendly atmosphere.

Food is just okay but their drinks are amazing. Their fishbowl deals are a steal and their other cocktails are delicious.

The sushi rolls are good but there is a limited selection! Very American style sushi! We had sashimi and the rice was warm. Pricy!

This is just for susi/drinks/hh.... Alrighty, I'm all up for trying new things, I saw a groupon for this place and thought why not?! I checked the good ol YELP! and saw that there were great reviews, but I also saw that I was better off without the groupon. Alright, here it go. It is in Canton, in the midst of all these other really nifty places. I have never been on this strip for drinking and eating, so immediately my eyes went to another hot and jumping place, this place was no comparison, it was quiet read: dead. I was expecting more for Friday HH! There was about three other people in there. The inside was really chill, somewhat saddity in my opinion. The walls were pretty cool, as the menu/specials were written in chalk, there was an aquarium chillin behind the bar....the music was chill, I was with my brother and he called it "girl music" ha! The bartender was super attentive, and helped to explain everything that was on the menu and the nifty drinks that were specials, which by the by were pretty flippin good. I had some pineapple upside down drink (yummers) and my broham had this cucumber infused gin and tonic (ahh refreshing). Now for you alkies, the drinks were not strong.... Also, you can not back up drinks for HH, so basically you have to finish your drink before you can get another for the HH price...womp womp womp HH is pretty decent, from 4p-7p with three dollars of rolls, five dollar specialty cocktails and nine dollar wok entrees. IMO, the menu itself was underwhelming, the sushi menu was rather small, there just weren't many interesting options. Not really any traditional sushi, I guess that is what you get for the whole fusion thing. Anywho, we ordered three rolls, none of which were particularly exciting, they were all just....meh. One had way too much old bay, I mean that was all that you could taste, the other had jalapenos and spicy mayo, and did NOT taste good at all. The salmon roll was cool, but how can you mess that up, seriously? I got the bill, and even with HH pricing, I spent more than what I wanted, for weak drinks and tasteless sushi.... So all in all.... Location: happening Ambiance: nice Service: awesome Drinks womp womp Food: negative! If I wanted to look for a chill spot to maybe take a lame date, I'd go back. But, if I am looking for a good time, I'll keep walkin'

We called to make a reservation on Sat night but it didn't seem like there were crowds pouring in. We didn't expect much from the place but had a groupon so decided to try it out. The drink menu is quite creative for a sushi place and my husband's sake taster was quite interesting with sake in different flavors such as pink lemonade and sour pickle. We got their chili garli edamame which was so delicious even though I tasted the garlic for quite a while. We ordered a few specialty rolls - all except 1 was good and pork belly which was interesting. The service was good and our server was on top of our orders. Their decor is simple and the 90s music was quite fun. All in all, a solid 4.5 stars, not quite 5.

i just moved to the area and the first thing i looked for was a sushi joint with delivery. there aren't many options in canton/brewers hill (which is crazy to me?) so i ended up giving shiso the first shot. the menu is edited, which can be nice, especially since they still offered some interesting choices - i ended up getting a philly roll, crunchy calamari roll and on a whim ordered the sushi nachos. all in and all everything seemed a little pricey (i'm used to paying about 6.50 for a philadelphia roll where as shiso charges 8) and they don't really offer the simple classics that balance things out (i wonder if i could write in an avacado roll and how much they'd charge me?) but i figured if food was great it's a splurge i wouldn't mind. all in all it took about 40 minutes to appear at my door, which was on the low end of their 45-60 minutes estimate and about par for the course when it comes to this kind of delivery. i was actually really impressed with how the food was packaged (it's the little things) - the nachos were beautiful even in a styrofoam box and everything was super fresh. my only complaint food wise was that the calamari roll was supposed to have spicy mayo, and while it did, i would have preferred more. the rice was perfect and nachos were just what i was hoping for - cripsy, fun and delicious. over all i give it four stars, deducting some for the higher price and somewhat limited menu. if you want to try something new this is a great place for something special, but perhaps not the right choice for your long term weekly sushi fix.

Just had a write a great review of this place. I love it! Right in canton square, they've got great sushi, healthy amazing food and nothing I've ever had has been anything but great! My favorite is their fried rice (super fresh veggies, homemade fried rice) and the shrimp tempura. The salads are also amazing. I was so excited when i found out they deliver! I'd always gone to dine in, and tried delivery twice and have been just as pleased! Food gets here super fast, hot and fresh. They never forget anything, keep it upright, and it's just as yummy as if you were there eating!!!! Definite healthy spot with delicious fresh sushi and cuisine!

The sushi and wok's are really good as are the happy hour drink prices. The only thing is that I really don't like their miso soup...its the saltiest miso soup I've ever had and not in a good way. The servers are all nice but FYI your food comes out as soon as its ready so everyone will get their things at different times.

Shiso gets five stars in my book. Went here with my boyfriend and a groupon in hand, and was absolutely impressed. We ordered the tropical fishbowl, which was worth the entire $18. It is definitely enough for two people, maybe three if you're lightweights, ha. We split three rolls: fried calamari which was nice and as expected, the kamikaze with a DELICIOUS kick of jalapeno, and the shiso lollipop which was insanely fresh and wrapped in cucumber instead of rice. I didn't ask, but they didn't offer us a regular sushi menu. So I am unsure if they offer basic sushi like avocado roll, sashimi, etc. However, I will find out and report back because I ran home and bought two more groupons. As someone mentioned, you cannot use them during happy hour. Luckily I knew this before visiting. When my groupons run out, I will be back. I wrote a little more in depth review on my blog, if you're interested: thift.blogspot.com/2013/… Needless to say, I'll be back again and again, even after my groupons are gone!

Awesome on all levels that matter! Sushi and rolls fabulous. Great guppy bowl cocktails. Wonderful dumplings. Fantastic salmon, orange chicken, shrimp pad Thai. Yummy firecracker shrimp. Super staff. Great vibe. Great prices. AND they made a birthday extra special with a dessert and singing! I may have to actually learn to parallel park so I can come back here more!

Swanky interior for a semi Sushi/fusion restaurant. Probably best to come at happy hour for a reasonable deal considering the quality/service/price. Update: came on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch. Weekday lunch specials are awesome! The starter salad is great and fresh and hefty! Also, you get 2 spring rolls to start and a Wok item on the menu... All $9! The service is good. For lunch, only one server/bartender ran all the bar and tables. I would definitely come here again for lunch though!

Few things warm you up from the winter cold like a steaming, brothy, noodle-filled wok pot. Shiso Tavern has this heavenly soup down to a science. A few Saturdays back, I found myself bustling down the snow-dusted streets of Canton Square, collecting a halo of flakes as I winded through to crowd to meet some friends here for dinner. As I pushed through the doors, tantalizing smells washed over me in waves of warmth, and I curved up the stairs to my group's table. To my shock and delight, I was advised happy hour was still in full effect...on a Saturday. From $3 beers and $5 wines to $3 off maki rolls and $9 wok bowls, my head was reeling with possibilities of culinary indulgence at a ridiculously wallet-friendly price. After some laughs and a glass or two of red wine, my core was starting to warm. To kick it into full throttle, I moved to the menu. The frigid temps combined with my appetite after an active day led me to the obvious destination: noodle soup, or specifically, the "Shiso Ramen Bowl". Savory broth chock-full of noodles, fresh bean sprouts and scallions, crispy pork belly, and a soft-boiled egg, plus a touch of chili for some heat...I could feel myself thawing from the inside-out with each soothing, steamy slurp. Talk about your comfort food. This concoction takes the cake in my book. And at a $5 discount from the standard menu price ($14), my satisfaction level was soaring. The group enjoyed everything from Orange Chicken to a variety of sushi, and everyone seemed quite pleased. Already have a return visit down in the books. Check this place out for some serious tummy love.

I'm not really a fan of Asian fusion restaurants, but Shiso Tavern is able to somewhat pull it off. A majority of Shiso Tavern's menu is sushi. To be honest, the sushi here is not the best. There's a lot more rice than necessary and some rolls taste pretty bland. On the upper end, I'll nominate the Soft Shell Crab roll. On the lower end, I wouldn't recommend the Spicy Crunch roll. I think Shiso Tavern needs to work on adding to their starter menu. Nothing looked appetizing and so I skipped that menu. On the Wok menu, the only thing that stood out was the Shiso Ramen Noodle Bowl. There's only one word to describe it - "interesting" - per say. It's not what you'd expect. I'd say the concept is Japanese; the pork belly is Korean samgyupsal; and the veggie choice resembles Vietnamese. Oh by the way, this bowl is HUGE and will certainly fill you up. I liked it... but again, don't expect the taste of authentic Japanese ramen noodle. The Shiso Specialties are where it's at. If I come again, this is the only menu I'd order from. These are like small plates, so I'd do a tapas style on these items next time. I recommend the Sushi Nacho and the Takoyaki Nage. Again, these are Asian fusion, but they're good. If you can make it in time, I highly suggest dining in during Shiso Tavern's happy hour. $3 off sushi rolls, $9 Wok items, and $5 cocktails. I'd probably only utilize the $5 cocktails since there's no discount from the Shiso Specialiies menu. You can judge me, but I did enjoy the Green Tea Palmer.

Pretty good sushi for Maryland. I never had the opportunity to dine-in, but got delivery every weekend. My faves are the sushi nacho, kamikaze roll, canton roll, and the spicy crunch roll.

TOTAL RIPOFF!!! Very overpriced for very small portions without the quality to justify either. The sashimi pieces were half the size compared to other sushi joints. The spider roll was the worst I've ever had (btw, our server didn't even know that soft-shell crab roll was also known as spider roll...should this person really be working at a Japanese restaurant without such basic knowledge?). Even the drinks...pass. To complete this regrettable experience, the manager on duty was one miserable doorknob who had absolutely no concept of customer service, word of mouth, return business, etc. In other words, he made it very easy to conclude that this restaurant was not doing so well because apparently, every nickel and dime must be forced out of customers' pockets at the cost of permanently losing repeat business (what excellent business acumen!!!).

Amazing!!! I am very stingy with my 5 star reviews because when I do give a 5 star review I want it to be taken seriously. This is one of those times. I called for delivery. The woman on the other end of the phone was helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the pad thai and had it made to fit my dietary requirements. They accommodated me with no issue. I am not from Baltimore and I wasn't sure where they were located. I realized when ordering that they were so close the man who delivered my food was able to just walk it over. He was so polite and friendly. Oh and the pad thai...wonderful!!! I can't wait to try more that their menu has to offer!!!

Came here for ramen since not a lot of restaurants in Baltimore serves ramen. It was a big disappointment. Why would you use chinese egg noodle for ramen? Soup base tasted bland. Crispy pork was so tough you can't bite through. And it was 14 bucks!! :( My quest to find decent ramen in Baltimore a la Totto or Ippudo nyc continues. Sashimi was too mushy and did not taste nor look fresh. We had the 15 pcs chef's sashimi and we couldn't finish it because it just didn't taste fresh! Drinks were bad too. Lychee martini didn't come with lychee. Red sangria tasted like club soda with a couple pump of grape juice... and it was 14 bucks!! The quality of food here definitely did not justify the price at all, and I came with a groupon. Service was decent.

My husband and I came here with a Groupon deal and ordered 2 dragon rolls (very delicious) and 1 other sushi roll and the Pork Belly that many folks seemed to have recommended. We asked the server to bring some Jasmine Rice to go with the Pork Belly and it turned out to be a very smart decision. Without the rice to complement it was too much grease and meat. I don't think my husband would have had a problem but I liked having rice on the side to soak up some of the flavor and grease. The food was good but overall I think they were over priced for the value you get. You can get much more for what you pay for at places like Chopstix in White Marsh MD (no I'm not paid to advertise for them), and parking wouldn't be so problematic. To summarize, good food but overpriced. Would not come without a Groupon or some type if discount offer.

Brunch is really good. An Asian twist on the Sunday staple with $6 bottomless Bloodys, mimosas or Sangrias. The brunch plate was delicious. I cant wait to go to dinner here. The menu looks awesome

I didn't buy groupon for this place and regretted a lot. Went on sunday for lunch. $10 ceviche had mixed chopped 1 pc shrimp and left over fish in a small sauce ball n too sour. Ordered 3 rolls which filled not enough for inside of rolls. Spicy roll wasn't spicy. And ramen was just ok but should had different pork not fried for $14 ramen. It was ready for serve pack ramen so has to have some more stuffs not 50 cents bean sprout and pepper. I just wanted to check this place but think waisted my time. Paid $65

After a year since I've been to Shiso and this time our visit was not so great. The service was mediocre. I had a diet coke with no carbonation and my bf ordered a mojito and and didn't taste nothing like one. Our food didn't come out at the same time. The sushi was nothing great, it's something I could have made at home. They didn't' give us appetizer plates or soy sauce dish. We ordered the Pork Belly noodle bowl and I wanted a bowl and the kid wasn't listening because I had to request it again ten mins later. I am very disappointed in this place.

Having recently moved to Baltimore, I bought the Groupon deal to experience something new and was a pretty disappointed with Shiso. This place is too expensive for what you get, even with the Groupon. This restaurant is trendy and has a great ambiance. Even though it was pretty empty during lunchtime, I felt that it could be great after-work/happy hour place to frequent in the future. However, we all know its the food that will keep a restaurant alive and I have the following suggestions for the restaurant: 1) The sushi rice lacks vinegar. It tastes bland and flat. The sushi rice is the base for all sushi, and you should not underestimate its importance. 2) We ordered the following: Hamachi Nigiri - The fish was served warm. I felt that the rice and the fish shared the same temperature and does not contrast well. Salmon Hand Roll - It is merely two slivers of salmon belly and rice. You should consider adding additional items such as cucumbers, avocados, furikake, ponzu...something. It was just bland. I thought the cut of fish was also erratic. The chef left silver skin on the salmon, which is unappetizing. Seared Kampachi - This was a good concept, but lacked seasoning. The serrano peppers were served with seeds included, which dominated the entire dish. Soft Shell Crab Roll - The crab had an old fishy taste, and was overcooked. The crab is expected to give the roll a nice crunchy contrast, but it ended up being mushy. Everything pretty much blended together. The soy paper added a nice texture, but doesn't compensate for the lack of technique for cooking the soft shell crab. Lollipop Roll- This roll had great potential on the menu, but this was disappointing because the the fish was once again bland. I could not tell there is different types of fish in there. It was almost like.....a salad without any dressing. I suggest that the sushi chef toss one or two pieces of fish in a ponzu or something. Just try to differentiate the various fish. You also get a pretty thick cut of cucumber that overpowers the taste of the fish. Again, this would be a great dish if the chef just refined his/her technique a little more. Total cost of meal: $55 + $3 Tax + $8 tip - $15 Groupon = $51. Blehhhhh would rather spend $51 on oysters at Mama's on the Half Shell a block away.

Horrific! The spring rolls were mush. The tempura rolls were bland, mushy and tasted old. Tasted like gas station sushi. Throwing most if it away.

I'm glad this place opened in the square. I got a groupon recently so it prompted me to try it. I'm really glad I did. I started with a hibiscus champagne cocktail that was refreshing and not too sweet. The calamari roll was excellent. The ceviche came out last, way after our rolls, which was strange because its raw, and it was good, but really really garlicky. I gave 3 stars bc the service was really slow. The waiter was nice but he was the only waiter in the whole place and all tables were full. We had to keep flagging him down for water, soy sauce, everything. We will go back though because we liked the food we ordered and the location is convenient. Hopefully next time they have more waiters working.

I came in to check this place out with a LivingSocial deal, but the happy hour specials were so good that I decided to save my deal for another time. Now, I can't speak to the bar area other than a quick glance, as we were seated upstairs, but I'm definitely a fan of this place! The decor is what I would call Baltimore contemporary - tasteful colors, exposed brick , oh and cute little mini tea pots on the tables for the soy sauce - very nice. Now on to the important stuff - service and food. Service was great - attentive and with personality without being overbearing. Drinks - all the specialty drinks are $5 during hh (mon - fri 4-7pm and all day sunday) and I must say I'm a fan of the Shiso mojito - yummy without being super sweet like some places make them. The Lychee martini was good too, if you're into the sweeter stuff. For food, we stared with the Chili Garlic Edamame then split the Tuna crostini (special that night), the Kamikaze roll, and the Philadelphia roll. I've only had the usual sea salt edamame, so the chili garlic was a nice flare! Warning though, this dish is heavy on the garlic, so if someone orders it...you should ALL have some. The crostini was delicious and I think we both could have eaten more of that. And the rolls were fresh and looked to have been prepared with care - you know what I mean, they were neatly and evenly rolled, and nicely garnished - not just thrown on a plate. Dessert was okay - don't get me wrong, we ate it, but I probably wouldn't order the same thing again. We had the green tea brownie and it just tasted like any of those generic refrigerated restaurant desserts - nothing special. So yeah, I'll be back at some non-hh time to use my LivingSocial deal and again during hh to partake in some more deliciousness!

Very trendy little restaurant! I love the ambiance of the downstairs dining area--it gives off a modern and chic feel. And the tunes in the background have an indie vibe, which sets the mood for the restaurant. The first time I came here was with my almost expired LivingSocial deal, but apparently it was during happy hour, and the waiter told us we would get a better deal with the happy hour specials instead of our coupon. I appreciated his honesty and saved it for my second trip. Good business ploy on his part haha. Their orange chicken is amazing! Just the right amount of sweet and salty. And they give you a lot, which is always a plus in my book. They were a bit stingy with the rice, but rather that than the chicken :) The salmon rolls were good, but I thought the tuna rolls were lacking a bit in the taste department. This is a cute restaurant that should be on your to-do list whenever you're in Canton Square.

Stopped in for happy hour (all day Sun). I think it also runs 4-7 Mon-Sat. This consists of drink specials, $3 off rolls, and $9 woks. Some of my favorites for the rolls were the soft shell, rainbow roll and shiso roll. I also enjoyed the ramen bowl with pork belly. An interesting draw, the head sushi chef came by way of morimoto. The place is still a on the small side, but the decor is a bit cleaner than the previous 2 establishments. It is nice to finally have a sushi restaurant restaurant in the square.

I've eaten here twice, had takeout once. Somewhat like its sister restaurant, there have been some inconsistencies, so I'm giving it 3 stars, although as far as the food goes, I think that it could merit 4 stars. The decor is not inventive, but it pleasant and gives a calming feel. My first time here was on a very quiet Sunday evening, so the service was attentive. However, on a Friday night, it was hard to get the server to take our order, he didn't check in during the meal, and the meal took at least a good 30 minutes or so to come out, during which we didn't really get any checking in from the staff. Okay, on to the food. The sushi here quality wise is good (not amazing), but probably at the top of what I've had in Baltimore. (Certainly superior to Ra, which is not difficult to do, but I mention Ra, since many of you may have been there before.)The traditional rolls are delicately put together, not sloppy. There was a tuna tataki "sushi nacho," which had a good kick to it -- I liked the crunchy texture of the fried wonton wrapper along with the sushi. I've also tasted the "safer" entrees of orange chicken with rice (actually was pretty tasty -- you probably can't mess this one up too much, but the breading was just right in terms of weight and crunch), and the pad thai, which I had with pork (which I haven't had before in pad thai). The pad thai noodles were well-cooked, and I did like the sauce, but there wasn't that peanut and lime taste that I'm accustomed to at traditional Thai places. Still, the pad thai here is superior to that at Sushi-san at Lighthouse Point, which tends to the dry side. I do think though that the price of these somewhat ordinary dishes is a little high. My favorite dish hands-down was the Hong Kong short rib. Cooked just right, melt-in-your mouth, and a soy based marinade that wasn't too sweet or too salty. The kimchi accompaniment is a perfect idea, too! In any case, despite the spotty service at times and the slow food service on busy nights, I appreciate the creative flair, balanced sauces and marinades, and fresh ingredients here and I will definitely be back to try some other offerings and to see if the service has improved (perhaps was just some early-on growing pains).

A friend and I went on a Wednesday after work. The place wasn't crowded at all and we were able to find a spot at the bar. They have really good happy hour specials on the booze and sushi. I thought the rolls were really good. I really liked the decor and the feel of this place. Reminded me of the type of place that should be in Baltimore. The service was excellent! I'll be going back.

Thank the Sushi heavens that there is now Sushi in Canton Square! Canton really needed this, Shiso is great, it's on the square, but tucked away from all the commotion that happens at night. It's quite and classy. I've been there twice and haven't had bad service yet. The wait staff is great and the bartenders can mix some great cocktails; the red and white sake-sangria were great along with the flavor sake shots. I like that there is variety on the menu and specials regularly that the staff is knowledgeable about so your not left wondering what is entirely included in your meal. I hope that Shiso latest because I know the other places that were occupying the space didn't last long. Next time I go (which will be very soon) I'm curious to see the upstairs, thank goodness Shiso had a deal running on Living Social because some of the items on the menu can be pricey, but hey it's sushi you gotta roll with it because it's def. worth it.

I was craving sushi last night and I've heard good things about Shiso so last night the BF and I headed to here for dinner. On a Friday night at around 7, we were seated at a corner two-top upstairs. It was very nice. Pinot Grigio for me, Miller Lite for him. We easily settled on 4 different rolls: Canton Roll, Rainbow Roll, Kamikaze Roll and a classic spicy tuna roll. A last minute decision for edamame and we were psyched for some sushi. Delicious! Definitely some of the best sushi I've had. Definitely equal to one of my other favorites : Chopstix up in White Marsh. The Rainbow was a highlight for me. The fish tasted fresh and perfect with the great avocado on it. We decided after finish eating to conclude the night with some sake which our waiter Alex suggested and it was a great way to end our first time at Shiso Tavern. We will definitely be back. Next time I want to try the Ramen bowls or other speciality dishes they have.

While the food was ok, the service gets a big thumbs down. Since there are plenty of other places in town that offer tasty sushi, Thai, and Chinese dishes with a side of pleasant costumer service, I don't feel the need to give this place another chance.

I tried Shiso several years ago when it first opened, and thought at that time it was the perfect combination of hostile service, lousy food, and a steep prices. I remember the evening well, as it rated as one of the single worst dining experiences I had ever had in the Canton neighborhood. Figuring that it was time to give them another shot after a couple or years, I tried Shiso again last week. On a Satureday night at 7PM, there were three people drinking at the bar, but not a single person seated for dining. This should have told me all I needed to know. A lovely hostess turned us over to the most intensly sour waiter I've ever experienced. He seemed entirely annoyed that we were there. Anti-depressants should have been on the menu...The waiter pressed us repeatedly to order first drinks, and then food, before we'd had time to even look at the menu. We finally ordered two hot appetizers, a sushi dish, and a hot entree. Within 5 minutes, all three appetizers simultaneously...The small table was incapable of handling the plates. When i asked that some of the appetizers be brought back later, the waiter seemed stunned by the request. And five minutes after the appetizers arrived, the main course arrived. We were just starting to eat what was on the table, so i asked if the main dish could be kept warm in the kitchen. The waiter adivsed that they had no way of keeping the dish warm, and that we'd be better off just leaving it at the table. I am not claiming to be a chef, but I do know that Pad Thai is not a five alrm dish featuring primarily Mexican style hot pepper. The dish was simply inedible, and it is the first and only time I've ever just said "We can't eat this".. My dining companion thought that each componenet of the meal might have simply come from the freezer sectioin over at the Safeway, except for the sushi (which was unspectacular but at least edible), My advice regarding Shiso is to avoid it like the palgue. But if you feel you must go, go soon, as I can't imagine they'll be in business much longer. At least the night we had there was memorable, and good for a few laughs.

I was so craving Japanese/sushi and was pleased that this place was within walking distance. I ordered carry-out, yes I was a bit antisocial that night. But am I glad that I happened upon Shiso Tavern. I had the Shiso Lollipop which was beautiful, and quite tasty. I also had the Sushi Nacho which was a very creative and delicious. The portions for the sushi were smaller than expected and the prices were a bit higher, but I have to say, it's well worth it for quality sushi. The bartender was so friendly when I walked in the door. Even though I was only picking up my order, she was attentive and kept checking on the status of my meal. I will definitely be going back to try the other great things on their menu. Truly a treasure!

We wandered into Shiso with a bad case of "hanger" (the anger you get when you're hungry and making poor decisions), on a Sunday night around 7, when our original destination had a 40 minute wait. We only meant to have a drink at the bar, but ended up staying for dinner. I'm so glad we did! Everyone from the hostess to the bartender was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely enthusiastic about the food. The bartender told us that the sushi chef was from Morimoto in Philly, and that's evident in the inventiveness of the menu. We tried both the Crunch Roll and the Rainbow Roll which were extremely fresh and beautifully presented. In addition, we ordered the Papaya Salad, which was savory and refreshing with fish sauce and lime, and the Pork Belly Noodle Bowl, which was huge. The pork was flavorful and satisfyingly crunchy/tender, but the texture of the ramen was a bit of a disappointment---mushy, rather than al dente, and lacking in any distinctive character. Drinks are very reasonably priced; my dining companion had 3 Blue Moons, at $5 each, and I had a lychee martini for $8. Shiso Tavern fills a much needed gap in the area--it offers an upscale, quiet haven from the rest of the Square, and we'll definitely be back.

I am approaching this review with sought of a reservation because i particularly have never eating sushi. However, as with the only other sushi place i have been to RA (happy hour), a couple of friends decided to have dinner here. I got the korean bbq ribs along with fried rice. The fried rice was ok.. and the bbq ribs were fine as well. I think the best part of my meal was the kimichi. As i said i dont do sushi, but it seems like everyone else on my table enjoyed their respective meals.

Highly recommend this place for its happy hour (HH), which on Sundays goes from 3pm until 9pm/close. They have a pretty good selection of food, which includes sushi (HH: $3 off) and hot plates (HH: all $9), and their cocktails (HH: $5) are really fun. Has never been packed when I've gone on Sundays, and I heard the same is true for lunch during the week though I don't know for sure.

Came in at 11:20 for an early lunch to an empty restaurant. I sat at the bar and made friends with the staff. The vegetable stir fry wok, miso soup and spring rolls are delicious.

I've been here 3 or 4 times, most recently last week. In the past I've always gotten a variety of sushi rolls but this time I had the pad thai with tofu . As always, excellent. Quick service, great seating areas (upstairs a little nicer than downstairs, IMO), good consistent quality. This is the best sushi in this part of Baltimore, comparable to what you'd find in DC or NYC. My other favorite sushi spots in B'more are Edo (by Inner Harbor) and XS (Charles Street near U of Baltimore/Mt. Vernon).

Been here twice. First time had the ramen bowl, I highly recommend it. Crispy chasu pork.... Are you kidding? Amazing! I've been searching for ramen and this hit the spot. Also had marinated baby octopus, a special, also great. Second time had two sushi rolls and Singapore noodles. Both pretty good. I will go again for sure. I really like the laid-back atmosphere and music . The servers we've had have been a little passive, but service has been fine. Cocktails are good too.

I went here because I had a Living Social coupon. Me and my boyfriend shared an order of the Pad Thai and ordered two specialty rolls and some edamame. There was plenty of food. Everything was very good and the service was fast and friendly. We will be returning to try out some of the other menu items.

I've eaten here twice now and both times were great, but nothing blew me away. Nice beer and wine list and fun cocktails, but I was hoping for a more extensive cocktail list. I believe they only had 6 or 7 mentioned. The first time I ate here I had the veggie stir fry...good, but nothing fantastic about it. The second time I got a variety of rolls. I like them all, but was not a fan of the vegetarian roll. It was wrapped in cucumber (which is fine) but it was large and slippery and fell apart. Service was great and decor/atmosphere was very nice. I'll definitely be back!

Awesome sushi and wok food!! The Resturant has a very cool interior. We ate upstairs at the sushi bar. Both of the sushi chefs were great. We had canton roll, diver scallops, sushi order of toro, salmon and red snapper. jayson's (sushi chef), specials of ceviche and yellowtail marinate with sea salt! Yummy. Also had soft crab roll Our friends had wok food of orange chicken. For desert we had green tea ice cream and green tea brownie. This was one of my best sushi experiences ever!!! Can't wait to go back!!!!!

Oh Shiso Tavern where have you been all these years? The Hong Kong short ribs were the most tender ribs ever with a very interesting flavor composition...slightly sweet, tangy and with kimchi! The fried pork belly was fabulous....almost as good as what you would get at Momofuku in NYC (for you foodies). The only suggestion I would have for the fried pork belly would be to serve with a starch, like a steamed Chinese bun. This is by far the most interesting and exciting food in Baltimore we've had...so different than anything else. We ordered take out so can't comment on service. We also did not have any sushi, but the items we ordered were superb. I am still dreaming of the pork belly....heaven. Will definitely be ordering again. update: Not sure what they did to the pork belly, but it's not so fabulous anymore. The Napolean stacked is still our favorite, but after 3 servings it's not as exciting. Still creative and unique for Baltimore.

Excellent fusion with a Bawlmer twist. Have dined here twice in a month. Very yummy sushi though I'm not sure it would get stellar ratings in Japan. Well, hey, Canton, Baltimore, MD, USA ain't Japan. So far have tried these rolls: Canton (shrimp tempura, lump crab salad, Old Bay), Crispy Calamari, California, Soft Shell Crab, Kamikaze (inside: spicy salmon, avocado, cream cheese outside: jalapeno, spicy mayo, hot sauce). All excellent. Also enjoyed the Sushi Nacho (sliced tuna tataki, spicy salmon, avocado on a crispy wonton wrapper). Yummy but not sure I would order it again. The subtle fish flavors were overwhelmed by the avocado and spicy sauce. A friend insisted I try the Fried Pork Belly, claiming it to be heavenly. Flavorful but way too much fat for my taste. This was a good intro to my mom, who until Shiso Tavern had never had sushi in her life. Had a ball trying to teach her to use chopsticks. She greatly enjoyed the experience and left - I think - a convert. She topped off her meal with a bowl of savory fried rice, most of which she took home. Atmosphere could be improved by removing big screen TVs behind the bar. They are distracting and unnecessary. The entertainment should be the food, service, other patrons and decor. Music is fun, another Asian-Western fusion component. I couldn't quite place it. Lounge music with Japanese instruments? Dessert sounded yummy but we were too full to try any, unfortunately. Brownies with green tea ice cream and New England whoopie pies laced with citrus (as opposed to vanilla) cream fillings. Service was good. Waiter Alex was efficient, laid-back and informative. Assistants kept the food coming in a timely manner. Happy hour (5 - 7 PM) price savings were a nice bonus. All in all, a fun, entertaining and delicious experience.

A little more mature place to hang out in Canton. Quiet with a nice bar and a decent selection of "Asian" plates. It was nothing special, but nicer than the typical burger/wings joints that surround the Square (but also more expensive).

I came here and had the Chef Nigiri set. Ten pieces with decent quality sashimi. The problem, though, wasn't the fish, it was the rice. The rice used was hard and crunchy at times, not well cooked. It would not go anywhere near any Japanese restaurant in Asia. Would not recommend making it out all the way to Canton for this.

We have lived in Canton for years and have been craving sushi since we moved from Florida. We are so glad we found Shiso Tavern. The sushi is excellent and totally worth going to. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because of consistency. This is a newer restaurant and haven't gotten the same quality exactly every time, but most of the time. As a business owner I'm sure they appreciate honesty and feedback to improve. Tim the owner is awesome, and we will be back.

I don' t LOVE sushi like some people do but every now and then I get a craving for it and I wondered why there wasn't a sushi place on the square. My first experience at Shiso was a good one - the food was delicious, the drink was tasty and the owner and bartender took the time to talk, tell us about the restaurant and about all the menu items we had questions about. I'm eager to go back!

Finally sushi comes to Canton...and it is good! Not to mention the other awesome things I ate tonight like papaya salad (spicy mmmm) and lomein with chicken. I was pretty jealous of my neighbor's massive plate of yellowtail steak (I think?). The bartender gave me a taste of her new "kumquat crush" which was delicious. This place is a huge upgrade to the Canton square and is a breath of fresh air. The new digs replacing Teamo are also pretty chic. Looking forward to having this restaurant in my neighborhood.

We popped in here for dinner on a Friday evening before heading to another Canton Square establishment for drinks. We arrived around 6pm and were seated immediately. Our waiter was attentive and friendly (but a low-talker), and promptly told us about the happy hour specials, which included drinks and food. We started with a Shiso mojito and a Sapporo. The mojito was perfect, the Sapporo - ehh, not so much. Skunky.. Switched to Natty Boh draft and all was good. Our waiter came back and asked if we had any questions about the menu, which we didn't, so we just ordered: house salad and pork pad Thai for my wife, miso soup and ramen bowl for me. The miso was delicious - not at all like the thin, clear stuff served at most sushi places (sorry Fuji in Bel Air, I will sample your watery broth no more!). The house salad had this dressing on it that was really light, yet heavy in flavor. I don't really remember what my wife thought of the pad Thai because I was hunched over and elbow deep in that ramen. Four or five really thick slabs of fried pork belly, a soft-cooked egg, bean sprouts, sliced red chilis, scallion, and ramen noodles served with a red chili hot sauce and a sweet sauce. I made audible yummy noises the entire time I was eating. Definitely worth a return visit.

I ate here a few weeks ago. I had the specialty sushi with the fried calamari and crab roll. It was delish! I also had the orange chicken with the fried rice, it was awesome. I had plenty left to have a nice lunch for the following day. The atmosphere was laid back for a Friday night. I had wine but a few of the ladies I was with had there martini cocktails and said they said they were great. I would definitely go back.

I've been there a couple of times. Bartender/manager, Dana is always very efficient and friendly. We had the $15 two course lunch yesterday. I ordered the green papaya salad and couldn't eat it. I'm a sissy and thought it was too spicy. Dana quickly recommended the house salad and simply replaced my salad. It was light, tasty and the housemade dressing was delicious. My friend had no problem with the heat of the papaya salad. I went with the pad thai noodle dish and my friend had the chicken noodle. We were not disappointed. It arrived in a huge bowl and we couldn't finish it. Our other friend got the orange chicken. She raved about it, but also had to wrap about half of it. They offer nice happy hour specials. Discounted beer, wine and sushi!!

We had a great experience at their happy hour last night (who doesn't love good happy hour specials on a Sunday night). The food was fresh and the service was very good. Despite being our waiter's first night, he did a great job serving - they clearly prepare their staff well. We did a combination of sushi and pad thai - we all agreed the pad thai was one of the best any of us had ever had. We ordered the tuna roll, salmon roll, spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, and Shiso Lollipop roll. All of the rolls were very good - but the Shiso Lollipop was by far the winner. We will definitely be back soon!

I love Shiso! Ive found it to be pretty under appreciated - great location in the square, perfect for people watching in the warmer months. Great happy hour specials most nights (sadly, I had a groupon and couldn't take advantage, so full-priced drinks for me!). Anyway, it got such high ratings because the Pad Thai is the best that I've had in awhile. Sushi was yummy, but not exceptional. Love the environment, will be coming back

Literally some of the best sushi I have ever had. during happy hour it is $3 off all sushi and $9 for wok dishes. Tried the soft-shell crab roll, the kamikaze, & the green dragon. All were delicious with the soft-shell crab being my favorite. Everything is very fresh and extremely delicious and affordable with most rolls being between $8-$12 during happy hour (Mon-Fri 4-7). This is far and away my favorite place to get Sushi in Baltimore.

I've passed by this place a million and one times---never really had an urge to go inside. From the outside, it seems very unassuming and honestly, not all that interesting to me--in general, I'm not a huge sushi fan. I bought a groupon with the intention of taking a date there, on the cheaper, because she liked sushi...what happened was she never materialized and the groupon was about to expire. So rather than just lose the groupon value, I treated myself to dinner. Let me say, that I was pleasantly impressed. Upon entering the dining dim rowhouse converted restaurant, I felt like this was an attractive, chic, fun place to eat and drink. They had specialty drinks and specials. The dining area was cozy without being cramped. The menu is familiar, nothing overwhelmingly exotic--you should know what you are ordering. Service was average. Menu pricing was reasonable for a nice sit down restaurant. The best part of my dining experience was the food. The food was good, no, it was great! I could really appreciate the effort the chef puts into the presentation--and the taste? The taste was exceptional and innovative. Light and fresh---not greasy, not heavy---yet filling. The sushi nachos were delicious, given that I dislike raw fish, that's pretty good! The ramen bowl with the pork belly was tasty. But the winner of the night was the Kung Pao tofu. The tofu was almost fluffy and fried (or cooked--whatever is done to it!) to perfection and the flavor was spot on. Take a look at my pictures---everything had an extra pizzazz to the typical dish that you may expect. Shiso is great restaurant to go by yourself, or with a date or even a small bunch of friends who like Far East Asian cuisine. No hesitation on an easy recommendation.

My boyfriend and I went here last night for our first time. They weren't super busy when we arrived so we go sat right away. Our server was very friendly and accommodating. They have awesome happy hour specials, so we each got two glasses of wine and they also had the rolls on special too. I started off with their Miso soup, and it was probably the best miso soup I've ever had. They give you a larger portion compared to most Asian restaurants which was nice because I usually finish it quickly. He had ordered the Kamikaze roll (spicy salmon, cream cheese, avocado; outside: jalapeno, spicy mayo, hot sauce) and loved it. He said it was the perfect level of spicyness. I had the original spicy tuna roll and it was probably the best spicy tuna I've had from any other sushi restaurant!! I would recommend this place to anyone, they also have a large selection of non sushi items too, that I cannot wait to try (especially the pad Thai) The atmosphere was very nice, upbeat and modern.

Overall, I think this place is a pretty good local sushi and asian food addition to Canton. I had a groupon, but if you go during happy hour, the specials ($3 off all sushi and $9 Woks) are pretty great. Lindsey roll - a California roll with torched (yet cold) scallop on top with a dot of sriracha mayo. This scallop was delicious. It pretty much melted in your mouth. I would get this again and again and again. Spicy Crunch - ($10) inside: crab stick, wasabi caviar, asian pear; outside: shrimp, spicy mayo, crunch. This combo with the asian pear is different, but very flavorful. Moo Goo Gai Pan - ($12) chicken, white sauce, broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, celery, onion, served with white rice...this comes in a white broth...it was flavorful, but at the same time, kinda bland. I wouldn't get this again Singapore Noodles with chicken ($14) rice stik noodles, spicy curry, sprouts, carrots, celery, scallion, fresno peppers, eggs. I've had this before, and thought it was good, but this time, it was defiantly missing something. It didn't taste the same as the last time. This dish is on the spicy side, so if you don't like spice, I'd get something else.

After hearing so many good things about Shiso we decided to head there for date night on a Saturday. I recommend making a reservation because there was a wait when we got there but thank goodness our table was ready and waiting! We started with a bowl of salted edamame which was steaming hot and absolutely delicious. They were the perfect starter. Our server reminded us that all food comes out of the kitchen when it's done, there's no waiting for everyone in your group to get their plate. Our sushi rolls came out first with our rice and pad Thai arriving only a few minutes later. I had the vegetable roll and vegetable fried rice. Both were absolutely delicious!

Too lazy to cook on a weekday, the boyfriend and I headed here for dinner. We started off with a shrimp appetizer, I don't recall what it was called. It was good but a small portion size. For my meal I ordered the Green Dragon Roll and asked for them to make it spicier by adding jalepenos. The roll was pretty good, not too memorable. Maybe I'm spoiled by my fave spot closer to home? For dessert we split the banana spring rolls with ice cream. I was disappointed at how small this dessert was. I thought it would be at least two spring rolls, but it was just one cut in half. After an appetizer, entree and dessert I was still hungry! The portion sizes were too small for me, so I left unimpressed. The food was good, not great, and not somewhere I would return to in a hurry. I rounded up a star mainly for the great customer service. It does seem like a good spot for happy hour though, so I may give it another try if I find myself in Canton again.

Shiso has great Happy Hour Specials- $5 for specialty cocktails and $3 off Wok Bowls. We had the spicy shrimp appetizer which was very good. I tried the mango chicken wok bowl. It was good, I would have preferred it to have a bit more heat to offset the sweetness, but it was good. A HUGE portion for $9!

Some friends and I were out in Canton and really craving pad thai, I had been to Shiso Tavern on the Canton square before and I know they have excellent sushi as well as other Asian delicacies (such as pad thai) so I suggested we head over there. We started our meal with an order of the Vegetable Spring Rolls. We were served four spring rolls with dipping sauce. The spring rolls were good and a great way to start off a meal, but nothing particularly special. We also decided to share an order of the Sushi Nachos. The sushi nachos were sliced tuna tataki, avocado, spicy salmon, micro cilantro on a crispy wonton wrapper. These were delicious, the fish was fresh and all the ingredients combined together nicely to create a unique dish. One of my friends ordered the Chicken Fried Rice. The chicken was tender and the dish was packed with a lot of veggies giving it a lot of flavor. My friend really enjoyed this dish and fortunately it was large enough to allow her to have leftovers for the following day. The real reason I wanted to go to Shiso Tavern was for the pad thai. So, I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai, with extra heat and I was not disappointed. The chefs threw in some extra spicy peppers that really elevated this dish for me, the flavors were complex with tender hunks of chicken, veggies and a nice spice that I crave. If you're looking for some great sushi or a pad thai fix in Canton, Shiso Tavern will certainly not disappoint.

Great Asian good right in canton! They have happy hour 4-7 during the week. Cool fish bowl and sangria drinks. Good spot for sushi and sake. They make me a special dish every time that isnt on the menu! Can't ask for much more! The bar tender is great, she knows my order every time I come back.

People with their GroupOn complaints need to learn to read and be sensical. I had bought a groupon, as I wanted to check this place out, and upon arrival saw their happy hour specials, and decided it'd be more advantageous to just utilize their HH than my groupon--understanding that you can't use groupons when utilizing specials--that's grouponing 101. Our waiter was awesome, and perhaps the highlight of our dining experience. I think his name was Bernie, he was fun and quick with everything. We ordered mostly drinks and sushi. Their green tea palmer tastes amazing. Others had their lychee-something and something-mojito, and said those were good. Now, although they tasted wonderful, I have to say this: we each had 3-4 cocktails, including 2 sake bombs, within 1.5 hours, and when we left, I don't know if I could even say I felt buzzed; which is a bit disappointing when shelling out money for drinks (even if it is on HH). The sushi was alright--not fantastic. We showed up right at 5PM, and there weren't many people there. The rice on the sushi tasted hard and old--perhaps left over rice from lunch? Even with $3 off, sushi with old rice just isn't tasty. Overall the place didn't leave me too impressed--better than some other places in the area for sure. I'll definitely be back, but mostly just to use my groupon--I'm very interested in trying their Woks as they looked great.

I was out & about and decided I wanted sushi or Thai... Unsure where to get sushi where I was, I opted to check out Groupon to see what they had to offer in terms of the Asian fare I was craving. I saw a few spots that I've been to and then I saw 'Shiso Tavern'. Okay - Groupon offered a decent deal so I had to see what Yelp had to say... The reviews were decent enough to check it out. I get there and learn they have Happy Hour goin on. Almost everything was reduced in price. They even had som amazing signature cocktails for $5 (normally $8+). The Ambiance was very welcoming and quite clean. The Music is great - Everything I love 80s/90s alternative!!! YESSS!!!! Let's begin the palate-gasm, shall we? 1st I had a cocktail called, '75 Champagne Cocktail of the Night'. It was a lavender infused simple syrup w/ gin, vodka & champagne... OH MY G**!!!!! Awesomeness!!! Next, I ordered the Pad Thai (chicken) and sushi (1) Avocado / cucumber roll and (2) Red Dragon roll. ALL dishes were soooo fresh & flavorful! I think I complimented the chef & sushi chef several times. Happy hour prices are awesome. I saved $15 on my bill. I will be BACK!!!

Me and my gf came here on a Groupon. Honestly, I probably wouldn't came here without a Groupon because Canton is further from Fed Hill than the local sushi places around Fed. However, if I did live in Canton I would come here for happy hour. They offered a good selection of happy hour drinks and sushi specials ($5 specialty cocktails, $3 beers, $3 off sushi rolls... and a couple more). Just a heads up for Groupon users, they don't let you use your Groupon on regular priced items for the $30 and then add on extra things from the happy hour menu. To start out we ordered a spicy shrimp appetizer (forgot what the exact name was) for $9. It was good but I would not have paid anything more than $7 for it. For entree I ordered the Shiso Ramen Bowl. The bowl was filling, but it was flavorless in my opinion (I prefer a more spicy ramen). However, it did come with two sauces on the side of which I wish they gave more of. I do want to try out their large selection of sushi selection in the future. The customer service here was great. Beginning off the meal, we had questions of what he would recommend and he was patient and very friendly with us. In addition, the food came out quickly from the time we ordered. The environment here was friendly however it could have used more lighting. This restaurant was more of a bar than a restaurant. Additionally, parking nearby is free street parking but can get crowded after business hours. Pros: - customer service - large selection of sushi Cons: - parking

My boyfriend and I decided to go for sushi one night and settled for this place based on reviews. When we arrived we were immediately asked whether we wanted to sit and eat at the bar or preferred a table. I'm glad we asked for a table because we were ushered upstairs, away from the front door. It was cold out and I was getting over being sick. When we arrived upstairs we had a little time with the menus before the waitress came over to take drink orders. I went with their version of a mojito. I found it sweet, but refreshing and light- just what I was looking for. We happened to be there for an early dinner and decided to place our orders before happy hour ended. The specials are really great. We shared the Hong Kong Short Ribs and two rolls. I let my boyfriend order the rolls, so I don't know the names. The short ribs were fantastic to say the least. The rolls were good and the fish was fresh. He happened to take advantage of the situation and order two rolls with crab in them, which is not my favorite. The rolls were still good. We were very happy with everything, including the service. There were so many things on the menu that we want to try that we hope to be back soon.

Only waited a few minutes and immediately got 2 drinks on the house (Chardonnay and blue moon draft). Excellent staff, very friendly. Love the atmosphere. I ordered the spicy crunch sushi roll and I will ABSOLUTELY be getting that again. I was impressed. Very fresh and nicely put together entree. Can't wait to come back again.

Went here the first week it opened and have been going back on almost a weekly basis ever since! The sushi here is so fresh, the entrées are delicious, cocktails are creative and service is incredible. I'll order delivery from Shiso if I'm feeling lazy and am just craving sushi and it's fast and just as good as in the restaurant. If I feel like going out, you could go for just a Sunday night casual dinner or make it a Friday night fun dinner with drinks. This place is really versatile and unlike any other place in the city. The vibe is like a new American upscale bar but with an Asian twist. Food to try: short ribs, sushi nacho, and all sushi! Drinks to try: fishbowls and shiso mojito!

I'm honestly surprised this place has such great reviews. I really enjoy sushi and Asian fusion cuisine and everything here was underwhelming. Poor drinks, gnats everywhere, hair on sushi and on plates, bland food. I'm not one to normally give bad reviews, but this was really a bad experience. Only good part was the service and staff. STAFF: We came bc I got a GroupOn, the pix on the site look delish, and the Yelp reviews sounded promising. The staff was friendly when we came and at 5pm on a Friday, it was still pretty quiet, so that was awesome. Immediately got seated and our server (Idr his name...blond, pleasant, good waiter) came over and told us the food/drink specials. DRINKS: My boyfriend ordered one that had champagne and some other liquor in it - bubbly but strong. I tried the other drink special, a blueberry/brown sugar something - too sweet for me. 2nd round of drinks, he got makers mark with ginger. The bartender put ab one shot of MM in a pint glass, then filled the rest with ginger ale. That made no sense to me; a good bartender would put it in a liquor glass, so you can actually TASTE the liquor you paid for. I got the sake sampler -4 diff types of sake. I should have asked first, but I was disappointed the sake wasn't warm. I know you CAN drink it at varying temps, but my preference and what I'm accustomed to at every other restaurant is warmed sake. Plus, 2/4 shot glasses were dirty. FOOD: When we got our plates from the waiter, the top one had a hair on it. This was before the second round of drinks and before we noticed the gnats, or else we prolly would have left. He just wiped the hair off and we didn't think of it. The sushi came and mine had another hair on it. Not in the sauce or in the roll, but on the side of it. I didn't tell the waiter bc the two hairs by themselves weren't a big deal. I had the kamikaze roll - 3/5stars. He had the red dragon roll - 2/5stars. We both felt the food was bland and presentation could have been better. We also shared a seafood delight wok-that was nothing to write home about either. BUGS - while we were eating, he kept shooing away a gnat. It struck both of us odd that there was a persistent gnat in the restaurant in December. It want until we were more than half way through the meal that I noticed there were MANY gnats on the back walk. The wooden one that is supposed to be like a divider, with the white panel decoration. It took a while to notice, bc they r small, of course, and if you're not looking for something to be there, you'd miss it. But there were 3 of them in one small square, so the group caught my attention. Then I realized that they were all over the wall and that was just gross. OVERALL: like I said, I bought a groupon, but since we got happy hour specials, we didn't use it. But we had such a bad time, I'm just giving the groupon away or canceling it. It wouldn't even be worth it to come back across town for mediocre, bland, unimpressive and hygiene questionable food. Best part ab it was the staff. Friendly, with plenty of smiles to go around. That's the only reason this review was a second star

This place is good for Canton! They deliver which is great and the food is very good! The sushi is fresh, but the rice is lacking not consistent which can hurt the overall quality of the sushi roll. Sushi menu is limited but I usually stick with a spicy tuna roll and the shrimp tempura roll. Great if you just want delivery, but you have better sushi options in Fells and HE areas that are more authentic. The rolls aren't very big so make sure to order an extra item so you're not still hungry. I've also had there pad Thai that's good but not authentic. They are getting 4 stars for quality of fish and delivering otherwise I'd say they are more a 3 star place.

I was extremely disappointed with the customer service and management. I bought a groupon for Shiso Tavern that cost me $15 for $30 dollars worth of food and drink. Upon arrival, the hostess made us aware that we could not use the groupon towards Happy Hour items. We then asked her if we could use it on non-happy hour items and still receive happy hour prices on sushi. She responded that we would have to ask our waiter for clarification. When the waiter arrived before ordering, we asked him, "can we use the groupon towards two fishbowl drinks and still receive happy hour prices for the sushi?" He replied, "yes you can use the groupon since the fishbowls are not on the happy hour menu. (Two fish bowls totaled o 30 dollars). We proceeded to order the 2 fishbowls and sushi based on his response that we would be able to use both. When we received the check, they used the groupon, but we did not receive happy hour prices on any of the sushi items. We brought this up to the waiter and he stated, "I told you that you have to choose one or the other," which was completely untrue. We then asked to speak with the owner, Tim. Tim was incredibly unprofessional and condescending. He stated that it is his policy that we cannot use the groupon and receive happy hour prices. I replied, "I understand this is your policy, however that is not how it was explained to us at the beginning of the meal." He was extremely rude in his response, "well you are clearly confused." His aggressive manor of handing the situation was extremely unprofessional and the worst display of customer service I have ever witnessed. I have never been treated so condescendingly in my life. He informed me that he would take the groupon off if we wanted to receive happy hour prices on the sushi which we chose to do since the bill would be less. The fine print of the groupon reads that this deal, "cannot be used in conjunction with Happy Hour Specials." I read this fine print before arrival and was unsure as to if that meant I can not use the groupon discount on top of already discounted happy hour items or on my entire bill that had happy hour items on it. That is whey I asked the waiter for clarification, however the information he gave me at the beginning of the meal was wrong. In all honesty, the happy hour specials were pretty impressive for mediocre sushi, however, after my experience I will not be returning.

Oh how I love this place! The sushi specials are great. Their female bartender is dynamite, so friendly, genuine, and pleasant to interact with. The table service we've gotten has been fine, no problems, but nothing worth mentioning. They have some interesting libations, and different desserts. Their happy hours are DEFINITELY worth going to. You can order your Wok items as spicy as you like, and if you spicy, except SPICY! It's awesome. Even the orange chicken tasted fresher than other places and not all breading. We go to Shisho Tavern for our sushi fix every 2-3 weeks so we speak from experience when we say that it is great!

I only started going to Shiso about 3 weeks ago... Since then I have been back at least ONCE a week. FABULOUS FOOD. I have yet to have something that is bad off the menu. The serving sizes are HUGE and very filling! Their fried rice is also HANDS DOWN the best fried rice I have EVER had! I always get the pork fried rice and it is actual shredded pork in there. Absolutely fantastic I have only ever sat at the bar, but every time am greeted by a warm bartender who loves to chat. They also had fantastic recommendations and were very knowledgeable about the menu. Their happy hour specials are CRAZY- check out their facebook to receive updates. Fantastic deals. Don't be scared by the normal prices- it may seem a bit higher but completely worth it in my book. I will be frequenting this place ALOT. Love Shiso! (lets be real Shiso, I'll probably see you this week)

This place is alright......Nice atmosphere. Trendy. Waiter was attentive and personable. We went near closing so I know that's not the best time they were nice anyway. Food was great. My Buddy had the Salmon and said it was a nice quality piece of fish even though its farm raised. Prices were reasonable. I will go back soon

Really great atmosphere and wonderful service. We ordered Sake bombs, sushi, pad Thai and orange chicken and they all were fantastic! Our server was fun and had gread recommendations for food. Also, everything was fairly priced and we were lucky enough to have a groupon. We will definitely be going back!

I have been here twice so far and both times the food was great and the service was great. I had the general's chicken and it was the best I have ever had and way too much for me to eat in one sitting. My fiance's sister had the orange chicken and she loved that. We all had the vegetable spring rolls and the entire table was in agreement that they were the best we had ever had. My fiance and his sister's boyfriend shared some sushi for an appetizer and they said it was great. The boys had noodle dishes and both really liked them. Overall I would highly recommend eating here especially during happy hour. Their happy hour deals are great. My only complaint would be that the drink prices are a little steep for non-alcoholic beverages.

We originally wanted Mexican, but after a chain restaurant sat us at a dirty table and ignored us for 15 minutes, we left and visited a new restaurant at O'Donnell Square. Interesting, but we decided to finish our dinner at Shiso. We started with a lychee martini (not my favorite, turns out, but interesting) and a cilantro margurita (new favorite). Next, we had fried dumplings and an avocado and cucumber roll. Excellent roll and the dumplings were good, but not my favorite only because I'm not a fan of dumplings. Then spring rolls because they are smooth, delicate and delightful. We decided to try their version of kimchi and a side of white rice. The kimchi was not overly hot but packed a nice zing. Our waiter was informed and left us alone instead of bothering us. Later, Tim the owner, came out and talked to us. (We dined outside.) Shiso has wonderful Asian food. We always eat plenty and are served well.

We finally checked out Shiso Tavern for the first time and were pleasantly surprised. There were plenty of tables upstairs when we got there. Our server greeted us right away and let us know the drink specials. They are big on cocktails there. I personally don't eat sushi so I ordered the spring rolls and the beef lo-mein. The spring rolls came out right away and they were perfectly fried and delicious. Since they have 2 kitchens, my hot food ended up coming out before the sushi which was shocking since it's usually the opposite, but I wasn't complaining! The lo-mein was very good, maybe a little over sauced, and the beef was a nice quality meat. My husband enjoyed his spicy tuna rolls as well. Our water glasses were never empty and overall great service. Shiso Tavern is moderately priced. Sure there are probably cheaper places out there, and maybe even slightly better, but the prices are on point with this type of restaurant. It's not a "hole in the wall." I'd definitely return.

Horrible service on the phone, the woman working Tuesdays at 9pm nearly hung up on me and before that put me on hold before i could even tell her my address for delivery. I don't care how great this place is, there's no excuse for horrible interpersonal service.

I'm giving this place 3 stars because of 3.5 star food and 3 star at best service. We had the tuna nachos, noodle wok, and ramen noodles. The flavors were very good in the ramen, it caught me by surprise. It was more of a pho taste, and even came w sriracha and plum sauces, but had the typical ramen condiments too. I enjoyed the rest of the broth for breakfast this morning (also nice - most ramen places don't give you leftovers for some reason). The tuna nachos were a bit awkward to eat but tasted very good and crispy. Also, the chili garlic edamame was tasty. The service, why 3 star? i think it was A-ok, and it wouldn't stop me from coming back. It just felt like w good place for take out, for sure, but maybe a little busy/overwhelming inside. On a quieter night I might say 3.5 or 4. But in from out of town and I am comparing it as such. In summary though I would eat there again, as the soup itself was very good.

I would like to start by stating we first came to this place be signing up for the Tavern Tour, which begins at Blue Hill Tavern, then proceeds to Tavern on the Square, and Shiso Tavern and finishes at Blue Hill Tavern. All three of these places are owned by the same restaurant groups. I was craving sushi one day so we decided to give this place a test run, turns out this craving day came on a Sunday. What a dilemma?!? Football and sushi, those two don't mix! I accepted the challenge and went anyway. We arrived right at 1 pm and pulled up a spot at the bar. The game was on both tvs. NICE! The down side to sushi, for me, is that I can eat a lot of it. When I say a lot, I mean A LOT! This can get quite expensive for me. However, on Sundays they do offer discounts on their beers and their rolls. But I do believe that what separates this place from a lot of other sushi places is their specialty dishes. My favorite is the pork belly. GOD is that good. One of my favorite pork belly dishes in the city! It is simple. Crisped up and served with a spicy BBQ sauce and topped with pickles. Great dish. Their selection of sake is also really good. I love their unfiltered house sake; delicious. If I were to give a downside to this place, I would say that they are pricey. But, with that being said the quality of the rolls you are getting are really good. I highly recommend this place if you are in the Canton area and craving sushi...and football!

My fiance and I come here all the time. Their sushi is good and their sake is always hot! Their cocktails are just okay. We love the chili garlic edamame! The Hamachi Crudo which has yellowtail, basil oil, jalapeno, onion salsa, sea salt is very tasty. We typically go at happy hour on Sundays which offers three dollars off all rolls and discounted drinks. They always have a sushi roll on special too and those don't disappoint. It's never super busy but has a steady crowd. The waitstaff is nice and laid back. It's become our go-to spot!

Was placing a $55 order online, live 1.1 miles away, am about 300 feet outside the delivery zone. Called to check and offered to meet at the corner on their boundary politely. Hostess was very rude and shoved me to the owner who was obnoxious and very short on the phone. Boundaries of course make sense, but if you have strict rules, don't be rude about them. I'm sure the food is great, but it is a shame to be so contemptible.

Trekked down to Canton because of the $30 for $15 Groupon. We were seated almost immediately upon arrival, waiter was friendly and knowledgable about all the specials going on. We ordered edamame which inexplicably never came but we weren't charged for it either so whatever. Sushi came out pretty quickly-- nothing spectacular here. They had had some good and unique rolls that were fresh and the prices were pretty good. No complaints there. Decent alcohol selection but again, nothing spectacular here. Wouldn't come all the way down to canton for this place but would definitely go back if I was in the area.

Been here a few times and haven't been disappointed yet. Their sushi menu has a fair amount of options and locally inspired items. You won't find the sushi bar downstairs, but it's still legit (go upstairs to see them preparing the sushi). They also have some good specials - friends of mine go on Sunday nights for discount rolls. Nice ambience and fresh air dining at the front and outside.

My favorite place in the square, and one of my top 3 sushi places in the Baltimore area. The servers are friendly and professional (Tom is our favorite) the ingredients are fresh, and Dana behind the bar is a wizard with infusions, so there's almost always something interesting to drink. We typically go for the shrimp fried rice, and a few rolls. Spicy crunch and green dragon are some favorites. We're also big fans of the fried park belly and the sushi nacho. This place is owned by the same guys that own Blue Hill and Tavern on the Square, so they know what they're doing, and how to put out a consistently good product every day. You'll find one of the owners,Tim there most nights making deliveries and saying hello to the regulars. It's good to see that they care enough to keep showing up.

I had the general's chicken and it was the best I have ever had and way too much for me to eat in one sitting. My fiance's sister had the orange chicken and she loved that. We all had the vegetable spring rolls and the entire table was in agreement that they were the best we had ever had. My fiance and his sister's boyfriend shared some sushi for an appetizer and they said it was great. The boys had noodle dishes and both really liked them. Overall I would highly recommend eating here especially during happy hour. Their happy hour deals are great. My only complaint would be that the drink prices are a little steep for non-alcoholic beverages.

The sushi and wok's are really good as are the happy hour drink prices. The only thing is that I really don't like their miso soup...its the saltiest miso soup I've ever had and not in a good way. The servers are all nice but FYI your food comes out as soon as its ready so everyone will get their things at different times.

i just moved to the area and the first thing i looked for was a sushi joint with delivery. there aren't many options in canton/brewers hill (which is crazy to me?) so i ended up giving shiso the first shot. the menu is edited, which can be nice, especially since they still offered some interesting choices - i ended up getting a philly roll, crunchy calamari roll and on a whim ordered the sushi nachos. all in and all everything seemed a little pricey (i'm used to paying about 6.50 for a philadelphia roll where as shiso charges 8) and they don't really offer the simple classics that balance things out (i wonder if i could write in an avacado roll and how much they'd charge me?) but i figured if food was great it's a splurge i wouldn't mind. all in all it took about 40 minutes to appear at my door, which was on the low end of their 45-60 minutes estimate and about par for the course when it comes to this kind of delivery. i was actually really impressed with how the food was packaged (it's the little things) - the nachos were beautiful even in a styrofoam box and everything was super fresh. my only complaint food wise was that the calamari roll was supposed to have spicy mayo, and while it did, i would have preferred more. the rice was perfect and nachos were just what i was hoping for - cripsy, fun and delicious. over all i give it four stars, deducting some for the higher price and somewhat limited menu. if you want to try something new this is a great place for something special, but perhaps not the right choice for your long term weekly sushi fix.

Paid $65

Mediocre. Good atmosphere. Sushi was only ok. Pad Thai was good. Their specialties weren't special. Saki menu was limited. Not gonna recommend or go back.
