Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Amazing Mexican restaurant! Ordered the guacamole and chicken tortilla soup; simply put: to die for! My boyfriend ordered the Shrimp Diablo and my mouth is watering just writing about it! Very fresh and flavorful. The shrimp was prepared perfectly. Our Guac was served in a crispy tortilla bowl and my soup was delicious! Noticeably fresh ingredients are used here which is key for Mexican food. Top it all off the Mexican Bulldog was not too strong or sweet. Great margarita and even better service. The waitress was very attentive and we even had a visit from the owner! Highly Recommend!

Awesome Mexican restaurant right in my old hood of Hollins Market. Not expensive, very well priced. Nice décor, added a great Mexican/Baltimore look to the space. Margaritas great and the food is about an 8. Never not liked it, always thoroughly enjoyed, simply not the best ever!

Lots of changes at Mi Ranchito this summer! New menu and staff, and it's pretty great! I went tonight for dinner during happy hour (until 7, M-F I believe) and loved the $5 margaritas. I did the combo platter with a burrito and an enchilada, and it was very good. Henry, our waiter, was friendly and attentive. We are very lucky to have this place in the neighborhood. It feels pretty awesome to have multiple options for good food in Hollins Market now, each occupying it's own niche. I look forward to going back to try the specials on wed (tacos) and thurs (fajitas).

The food is 5 stars and we had a very attentive waiter last night. Shrimp fajitas were excellent! This was our third time there. While the quality of food was fantastic this place could use some fine tuning i.e. our entrees did not come at the same time, no paper towels in the bathroom and the room was very cold. Also, the margaritas are good but sort of expensive so be prepared. I do love that this place is here and serves fresh food.

After an hour wait for a dinner for four, the food was a disappointment. First we had to wait additional time for silverware. My vegi fajita was a meager mix of two pieces of broccoli over- cooked and a few tiny pieces of zuccini with two slices of cooked tomatoe and a few slivers of onion, one slice of green pepper, hardly edible. No soap in the bathroom. Understaffed, but hard working and very kind. One wonders if the owner takes the business seriously because this is a good location for success. I will not be going back until there is new ownership or management.

So I reaalllly wanted to love it here as a Hollins Market homeowner, and I think I still could once they do a few tune-ups. PROS. Most importantly, the food is EXCELLENT - 5 star. The papusas are perfectly prepared, and all of the meats we had were so delicious and flavorful. The CONS. Despite some expert work in the kitchen, no one in there knows how to manage a restaurant. Our bartender had to ask us how to make our drinks (margaritas sooo...) The customer service in general is pretty rough. Our bartender talked down on the place the whole time we were there, so that's no good. They were out of a ton of stuff on the menu, not a HUGE deal, but partnered with everything else it spells mismanagement. The weren't playing any music unless you paid for the jukebox - which is cool that they have one, but it had connection issues and didn't play a lot of the songs we paid for. The one woman who seemed like a manager was just watching telenovelas in the background, which cool fine - but not during dinner? It's not very welcoming and seems exclusive. At any rate, it's definitely worth a try and a second visit for the food. I wish them luck!

This this delicious and authentic El Salvadoran restaurant is giving the eastern taquerias a run for their money! Awesome food, great bar selection, wonderful atmosphere, and decent prices!

The food is amazing!! I eat vegetarian and there are tons of vegetables in the veggie burrito (which tasted great). The waitstaff is awesome, and the owner is very hands on. The margaritas are great!

Much anticipated place, just opened up and was worth the wait! Everything was so delicious from pupusa, tiliapia and fajitas...The maragritas are also rockin. Service was excellent and the atmosphere nice as well, it seems as if you walk right out of Baltimore and into a land of El Salvadoran delights.

Today I saw a post on twitter where apparently the wife of the owner of "Mi Ranchito" in Hollins said she don't want "blacks or gays" in the restaurant. I'm extremely disgusted and will never make an attempt to eat in there establishment with those kinda of views. I never went but I planned on going soon. This just makes realize that here in MD, RACISM is real. So thanks but no thanks. It's not even worth trying out.

First off, decent food. Chicken tacos were a little dry, but beef was good. However, the service took forever! The seater/waitress doesn't speak English, so we had to wait for her sister (who does and works in the back) to ask whether their tortillas were corn or flour (one of our party was gluten intolerant). Good news: they have corn tortillas! Bad news: it took 45 minutes after ordering to get 9 tacos and a couple papusas (which came out as appetizers). Our party of five were practically the only customers (one person came in about 10 minutes after us and he got his food first). There were two people in the kitchen plus the waitress and we have no idea what took so long- everything came out warm but not piping hot as if it was freshly cooked. We tried asking how much longer it would be, but the waitress didn't understand English.

Slowest service EVER! No excuse for it. One hour to get 3 orders of tacos! Tacos were dry. Papusas were tasty. Make sure you have plenty of time. People are nice but only one speaks English! Sad as we were the only patrons except for one guy who ordered and then ran an errand.

Delicious! Went tonight to get take-out, which it turns out is clearly not their main focus, but they were super nice and helpful and we just had a great dinner at home. Hopefully they post their menu online soon (and even better, please offer online ordering!)

Reading so of the reviews, I see some things don't change. A year later, the service is STILL slow. I waited 25 minutes for a chicken enchilada. I've never waited than 15 for Mexican food and that place was packed. They were friendly, but after asking her about my order and hearing the same excuse again "there are a lot of orders ahead of you", that was my cue to peace out. Oh, and by the way, Halloween is over; you can dust the place for cobwebs now....it ain't cute no more.

Food was ok- not bad at all but not great- standard tex mex. Service was terrible- we were the only ones in the restaurant and still waited over an hour before food came, maybe they had many deliveries? The waitress had no idea what she was doing, got our orders wrong after the one hour and they still charged us for the wrong order

I really wanted to like this place because it's the closest Mexican food place to my home. But I had to give it 3 stars. Here's why: pan-fried shrimp with a side of beans and rice. Shrimp was dry and a little bland. Rice and beans were pretty sad. The margaritas were strong, but made with mix. That stuff in unauthentic and tastes bad. The guacamole appetizer was excellent. Extra points for plenty of chips and three different salsas, but the pico de gallo was bad. The gentleman at the bar meant well, but called me "sir" twice. I'm a woman. That looks like woman. So whatever, but they don't get points for that. Overall less than average experience.

Finally, some good Tex-Mex on the West Side. Although the decor doesn't echo the long-loved Cultured Pearl, the food certainly hearkens back this joint's forebearer. The margaritas were excellent - not to sweet, and the cervezas were beers. The chips, salsa and guac were all fresh and the steak fajita was great, though a little salty. The Spongebob on the flatscreen and six year old doing his homework made us feel right at home. A big Mucho Grats to bringing some Mexican flavor back to SoWeBo!

(5/24/2015) Was wandering through SoWeBo Arts Festival and needed a respite from the patchouli fog and summer sun. Remembered this spot as Mencken's Cultured Pearl, a long-time Baltimore fave for Ameri-Mex food. Hopes were not high when we were greeted by a bar full of yelling sports fans, 4 TVs (and 1 huge 70" projection screen), and offers of margaritas, and rum punch on special. We sat on the dining room side, bathed in those modern late-2000 soft rock hits by the likes of John Mayer and Jack Johnson and Adele that my Sirius channel calls "The Pulse." A couple of things off the menu were promising, subtle hints that the food might actually be legit (and also likely Peruvian and Salvadoran), like Chicarrones, Pupusas, Lomo Saltado, Ceviche. For the gringos they do have your standard Tex-Mex fare of fajitas and nachos. Right outside the door and they had a woman making Revueltas Pupusas (pork and cheese), classic Salvadorn, as fast as she could for festival goers. They were large, moist, balance mix of filling to masa. Came with the traditional sides: the curtido was crisp, flecked with fragrant oregano, and sufficiently sour and zippy; tomato sauce was smooth and tart. Ceviche was Peruvian-style (later learned the owner/chef was married to a Peruvian woman, so learned a lot from her); Mixto was shrimp, tilapia, squid, with the classic Peruvian touch of a sweet potato and cob of corn. The milk was clean and straight up lime juice, the dish included cilantro, red onion, celery, and fresh jalapeno. Also tried a single fish taco, was really good; 2 thick fingers of battered cod, fried crisp and in a (non-traditional, but decent) soft flour tortilla, with pico and a drizzle of a spicy, tart, mayo-based sauce, and crumbled queso fresco. The nod to Tex-Mex was the Chicken Chimichanga, a decent deep-fried burrito-sized flour tortilla stuffed with pulled chicken and melted cheese. We totally appreciated the lack of jarred salsas, sour cream, and shredded yellow cheese that most Mexican places around town feel they have to drown the food in for Americans. Prices were decent, service was a touch rushed and a little immature, but fine. Mi Ranchito seems to have hit just the right mix of decent and authentic Latin food (hesitate to call it Mexican) and standard festive Cinco de Mayo atmosphere most gringos are looking for when they walk into a Mexican restaurant. I personally am looking forward to trying the tamales in banana leaves soon (which would be more Central America, than anything), whenever they get those up and running.

Food was really good. Salsa is spicy without being overpowering. I ordered a pork and cheese Pupusa it was very good and had lots of flavor. I also ordered the shredded chicken tostada. It came out looking good and tasted great. Lots of really good flavor. I would give the food 5 stars but took one off for service. The waitress seemed new but was pleasant enough. We were the only people eating the whole time in the restaurant. The food came out pretty quickly after waiting about 20 minutes. Everything we had was delicious and the margarita was amazing. Will definitely eat here again. It's a hidden gem

Food was bland and tasteless. Good atmosphere but the Chef can't be Mexican. I have traveled to many pages and the food is fresh as well as the seasonings.
