Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I love my friends at Bikram Yoga Baltimore, so much so that I will do an outdoor yoga class with my mat and my face on the ground of the beer soaked power plant floor. And on top that, have a few drinks at Mex. I can tell you with absolute certainty that I will never go back to this place - well, unless there is another outdoor class and peer pressure from the instructors. First off, it will take about 20 min for you to get 6 drinks, even when you are the only table in the place and 5 of those drinks are beer and wine. Don't ask me how long, if you actually order some margaritas. I shall say, the bartender can make a decent bloody mary, which is a perfect after yoga, midday drink. It was spicy and flavorful, but certainly not very strong. That was fine since it was the middle of the day and I was driving. If you like Mexican food, I would stop at the drinks. I've tried the salsa and the queso. They both taste like nothing - the grocery store jars have more flavor, and are certainly cheaper. The guacamole comes in a large mortar bowl, which would indicate that it is made fresh as you order. Taste wise, its missing the lime, the cilantro, the spice and the salt. Chips are good though - covered in old bay - finally something with taste. No wonder, considering everything else is bland. There are no pictures, since I was completely underwhelmed from the moment I stepped across the threshold. I truly enjoy Aggio and Joe Squared and places like this do not help those survive.

Came here for my brother's graduation night. They had a special for JHU grads and family/friend. Basic drinks were $3! Music was top 40. Bar was filled with raging college kids...but it was graduation night, so wouldn't expect anything less. Nice patio area. Fun for dancing and they have poles and stage for those who wanna get risky ;) I enjoyed the night but would never come here by choice. A little to wild for me. Perfect for the newly 21 year olds.

Friday afternoon service on the patio was excellent. Bartender was quick and friendly. We had the shrimp chorizo black bean quesadilla, outstanding!!

Came here on Cinco de Mayo for their killer deals: $1 tacos, half off appetizers and $0.50 margaritas! The margaritas went up by $1 every hour past 11 am. For the price I paid, it was certainly a good deal. I got 2 tacos, 4 margaritas, and guacamole, which ended up being only $10. The tacos weren't the best tacos I've ever had in my life but they were filling and I would say well worth $1. The guacamole also came in a huge stone bowl so I was pretty pleased with that. The margaritas were average - they ran out of glasses pretty quickly and had to use plastic cups which is not a huge deal but just something I feel like should have been anticipated. The service was quite slow though - our waitress was nice but it was only her and another person trying to get everyone their drinks and food, so it took a while for us to get everything we ordered. There could have been more festive decorations and music playing which could have made it a more fun atmosphere but overall decent lunch break and good way to celebrate cinco de mayo!

This place definitely caters to the after dark crowd, but the food is just fine. They don't have the traditional 8 pages menu of most Mexican restaurants, but Mex isn't really about the food. It's not bad food, but it's not really where you want to go if you need a Mexican food fix. They do frozen margaritas in the big batch format, so I went with a margarita on the rocks. Tasted fine, although drink service was terribly slow for a mostly empty evening. The food was just fine, but don't bother ordering a side salad - what they threw into a bowl doesn't really count as a salad. Just go for it and get the fries. (Yep, fries at a Mexican restaurant.) The guacamole had a little too much citrus flavor, but we got a decent amount for the price. I'd go again if it were convenient and others wanted to go, but it's not going to be my go-to Mexican spot. But then again, they're not trying to be.

Staff was friendly. Restaurant is clean. Nice atmosphere. But, it stops there. Maybe being from the west coast has spoiled me, but this is not authentic. It's not even "fusion" (which, I hate that term even exists because I have yet to find good fusion food, but that is another story). We stumbled upon this place while at Maryland Deathfest, hungry and wanting to sit in a cool area, so we decided to give this place a go. We got the nachos (no meat) and vegetable tacos. The cheese was "Mex" cheese, which is basically like thise bags of mixed cheeses you get from Albertsons and they throw the label "Mex Blend". What constitutes for a Mex blend, I don't even know, but it wasn't good and it tasted like plastic. There were a lot of other ingredients on the nachos though that it made the cheese ok to deal with. The tacos were ok. They were bland. The taco plate comes with 3 tacos, nexican rice and black beans. My boyfriend and I could only have one taco each. We didn't even try having the last. We didn't even try ordering drinks. The drinks were expensive and the beers weren't even a decent selection. The dude who served us gave us a discount so instead of paying $18 (yes, each dish was $9) we were billed $16. We still wanted to give him a decent tip though because he was at least very nice and would talk to us every now and then about MDF. Needless to say, we need to check Yelp next time. Didn't realize this place had such low reviews. Womp womp. It has such potential too.

In dropped in here for a quick drink on a weekend. The mixed drinks were fine, but the real highlight was the bachelorette party that strolled in and started dancing on the stage. That was unexpected. If you are looking for a bar scene with dancing ladies, this is the spot for you!

Background I typically give 2 or 3 stars for a business when I can take it or leave it and more than likely won't return unless I have a reason to. This place was chosen by a coworker under the assumption that there would be some sort of mexicon (costume party) event. Maybe it was later that evening but idk. We were there for happy hour and left around 8:30 and didn't see anyone in any kind of costume. Anyway, we decided to dress up in tutu's and converse for another coworker's surprise bachelorette party. Service Seated immediately and the server was nice. However, she forgot my blue cheese and had to be reminded after I was half way through the wings. The cheese fajitas that were ordered were given to someone else at another table. Not really sure how you split orders between tables. And she also forgot to bring a drink that came after we all had eaten. Food I wasn't really a fan of the packaged nachos with shredded chicken. The wings were fried and sauced to perfection and had just the right amount of spiciness. However, the spicy wings along with the chipotle ranch dressing made for too much spice so I asked to substitute the ranch dressing for blue cheese and was charged .50. I know it's a little petty but it really annoys me when restaurants charge extra for condiments, especially when I'm just substituting for the condiment that the meal came with. The chicken fajitas were ok although usual and so were the steak fajitas. The bride ordered the steak dinner and said it was just ok. Her opinion may be a little biased though because she owns a Philippine restaurant. Drinks The red sangria was very weak and tasted like it was made with cheap ginger ale and some kind of juice. So I also ordered the strawberry margarita and that was gawd awful. Took two sips and couldn't struggle to finish it. Honestly I'm the go to happy hour for the cheap food kind of girl so the fact that this place did not have a happy hour food menu really annoyed me. And given the taste of the food they should probably just give it away. Yeah, I probably won't return. The patio made for good people watching though. Almost earned another star for that alone.

The quest dip wAs served to me luke warm and it tasted like velveta cheese. The menu was small and non exciting. The service wAs ok. I didn't stay to eat after tasting the queso dip, cuz I was not impressed.

this is the worst dining experience I have had in ages, slow slow service, food was ok but portions were tiny, bathrooms were absolutely disgusting! Worst of all shared our dissatisfaction with the manager and he did nothing and dismissed us. Will never go back and would not recommend anyone else to waste their time/money at Mex either.
(1)Sandy A.
I came here when they first open many years ago and the place was awesome so I went open to power plant thinking Mex would be a good place to eat because I loved it the first time !!! We're do I start we sat at the bar the barmaid was great she made a really nice drink we order food which was ok ! Now while sitting there waiting on our food we saw a roach on the bar spiders crawling in the fruit tray ... It's was nasty I will not be going back !!!!

We went there on a Sunday and got all you can drink margaritas that were awsome. The bartender Sarah was super cute and friendly. She made AWESOME jalapeño margaritas! the food was also good.

I came up here for a "battle of the bands" that a friend was participating in. I always find it weird to visit a bar during the daytime, and the place was kind of empty. Still, they must have had several dozen customers so it's not like there wasn't much going on. My first impressions were "Oh, another meh bar." In daylight, with empty booths, the bar kind of has a divey feel to it. It might be better at night, when the place is packed and there's more going on. Still, there was nothing from the decor that sent me running and our tables were clean. I went to the bar and ordered some drinks and food, as they didn't have any table servers. Unfortunately, they only had two bartenders handling both sides of the place, and they were a little overwhelmed. It took a while to get a drink in and some more time for my food. I don't blame the staff (who were cordial albeit rushed), but if you're going to have an event you might want to add at least one more person during the day. I was a bit disappointed that they had no Midori for a sour, and ended up with a "melonball" that tasted like kool-aid instead. However, their simple mixed drinks were fine, and my friend said he was quite pleased with the amount of fine gin he had in his gin-and-tonic. What sold me was the food, and all I had were the nachos. Now, this is Power Planet Live!, so expect the prices to be pushed a bit. I think it was $10 or so for the plate of nachos, but what came out was ~excellent~. A variety of tortilla chips, well saturated with beans and a scattering of jalapeños, topped with a big glob each of salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. What really sold it was the steak, tender large chunks of actual ~steak~ strips rather than the wannabe chunks other places uses. So, I may try them again at night to see if they can up my opinion. From what I've seen, though, it's an alright establishment but with some tasty food.

Not sure why the score is so low here. Very pleaaed with the quality of the food (esp the flank steak) and rhe service (thanks Chelsea). Good drinks as well. Wife aays they need to put a door in the bathroom stall, hence the 3 stars

2 stars because the waitress was nice and management was very involved. However, the food falls short from mexican cuisine. Perhaps their inventory is not that of a mexican restaurant but that of an american restaurant disguised as a mexican restaurant. The drinks were watered down... specially if you have to ask if there is any alcohol in this beverage. Beers surpisingly enough tasted stail and flat which is pretty strange when youre drinking from the draft beers. Overall the experience was less than satisfactory and fell way below even to the standards of a biligerant drunk, which is impossible to be due to the lack of alcohol in the drinks Recap: meat: very chewy and rubbery and not cooked as directed. Drinks: very much watered down. Custmer service: very nice and caring. Hopefully they use this medium as a way to self reflect and look at what theyre doing right and what they are doing wrong. Best of luck to you guys and hopefully next time we visit it will pale in comparison to our first visit. Cheers!

Last night a group of 9 went to Mex for a birthday celebration. It was hands down one of the worst dining experiences of our lives. The table wasn't ready until 20 minutes past our reservation time. It took at least 20 more minutes to get our drinks. The chips and dip came out a half hour after ordering (even after asking for it a second time). Then our meals took another 40 minutes for the first round. I say "first round" because the food came out in 20 minute waves. I was the last to get my meal and everyone else had pretty much finished by the time it arrived. The waitress was AWFUL. Since we were a group she added 18% gratuity and didn't bring us back our change when we asked for it. She claimed she didn't owe us any change. So basically she gave herself 20%. It took 3 of us to finally get a manager to take care of things. Oh and the food was nothing to write about either. If your looking for a place to get good Mexican and service don't bother going to Mex.

We went here for happy hour before a concert and power plant. There were definitely good HH specials at Mex. The outdoor patio area is really nice with good weather. You have a view of everything going on. Our server greeted us pretty quickly. The menu was actually pretty small, but it has all your basics. We started with the guacamole which was a huge portion and very fresh. The chips were awesome. They were seasoned with something and I couldn't stop eating them. I would definitely get that again. The quesadilla was average, but it was nice to have onions and peppers in it. I would order it again for HH. The only thing that really downgraded this review was the services towards the end. It seems like our server transitioned to the inside tables and just completely forgot about us. We had to actually go inside to find her after at least 30 minutes of no service. Good thing we weren't in a huge rush. They definitely could have done a better job of how they assign tables.

Do yourself a favor and find anywhere in Baltimore for a better, more affordable meal. Three cold tacos, cold tortilla soup, and a coke - $20.00. I thought he was joking. Then I realized the joke was on me. Never again.

Just like everyone else I read the reviews before coming here, and I came with a group of co-workers, with the notion it would be as bad as it says it is, but, what a big surprise that EVERYTHING was delicious! The salad, fajitas, chicken and beef I might add, rice and black beans, Chips and Salsa, and the dessert were on the money. Great hospitality from everyone as soon as we walked into the place. it was 16+ of us and we were waited on promptly, everything set up nicely, restaurant very clean. So I'm not sure if the bad reviews are from really busy nights or what, but our food during lunch hour was really good, I heard no complaints. I would come here again for sure, and no I'm not a fraud pumping this place up, I tell it like it is and I'm pretty straightforward with my reviews.
(5)Loni H.
I love this place, the food is good, the drinks are ok but the prices are reasonable sometimes they have a band right outside. The waiters and waitress are very friendly and I like to go for the ambiance.
(4)Corey C.
Started off the night with the AC above our table dripping on our food. Our server told the manager and he could care less, didn't even come apologize. The server seemed ok but both mine and my GF's orders weren't that satisfying. I would stick to somewhere else, Taco Bell or Chipotle are more consistent.
(1)David P.
Awful experience. Mediocre food and truly terrible service. I was seated outside, and waited almost twenty minutes AFTER eating for the waitress to bring my check. I was one of four customers. I got up to walk inside and the manager burst through the door- "Can I help you?" in an accusatory tone. I guess he thought I was going to skip out on the check? I walk inside with him to pay and see my waitress casually talking behind the bar with a coworker. There were no customers inside. Seriously, the food was poor and the service sucked. Go somewhere else- these people are clueless losers.

I'm only rating this place because I was with a friend who won a happy hour. For that reason and that reason alone this place gets four stars...I wear a band and what, get $4 crown and ginger, $3 margaritas and rail drinks (oh and btw I'm too old for rail. Rail = fail)? Now on to the other randoms, its in Power Plant! (blah) Live. Typically, I loathe this place and the many wack nuts and youngin's that frequent. Le yikes! Unless you are on the fabulous HH list, you you will have to pay to get in after 10p, I have absolutely no idea why though. So all in all, just get there before that time. Inside, it is a typical bar, no qualms there. I know they served food, but I got there too late to try it out. Muzak: I'd be in the middle of the groove and BAM! I'd be hit with some country. I didn't get the djs music selection. Now, had I not gotten such a great deal on my whiskey 'ol Mex would've gotten a lesser review. But I do love my whiskey! Cheers!
(4)Prettigirl T.
Not even sure why I gave it 2 stars I guess im just too nice or maybe that's because I keep winning happy hours some kind of way. Anyway I went here for my bday bash that i signed up for thinking it would be good but I was wrong. When you win a happy hour or get wristbands to drink at a discount price/free the drinks are horrible. Very watered down, more ice than drinks, etc. I don't know if they don't want you to get super drunk and acting a fool so that's why they don't give you much alcohol but the whole purpose of me going to a bar is to get drunk. For all that I could have stayed home. You have to order shots to even get a buzz to have a good time. the music is bland a bunch of old stuff I heard in the 90's. No point in me going back again. Ive had better MUCH BETTER! They can keep the free happy hours with the watered drinks. My friends and I will would much rather go to fells point where we can get trashed!
(2)Victoria S.
I've been here a number of times before Rams Head Live/Power Plant Events. It's a cheap meal for not-city prices. However, you definitely get what you paid for. I'm never blown away by much here but the guac. The nachos are good, but they are a little underwhelming. If you need a couple beers and some chips and salsa before a show and don't' want to spend money on something expensive. I'd recommend. Just don't get your hopes up! Atmosphere is fun though. The outdoor seating is nice and we've heard a lot of great live music. The staff is polite and courteous. The bathrooms are clean. Margaritas... meh. I think I could make better ones. I know this review is a bit wishy-washy but I'm usually not impressed. But normally I'm just here for a few beers so the food doesn't bother me. I could take it or leave it.
(3)Dawn R.
I got here around 7:00 on a Friday, early by PPL standards, so I missed all the long lines I've read others post about. I was able to walk right in and get a table while I waited for my friends to get there. Overall, the place wasn't bad, and yes, I did notice the stripper pole in the corner although I did NOT take advantage of it. This time. The DJ started a little before 8:00, and was playing a pretty cool mix of songs, a lot of 80's and 90's stuff that's good to dance to, as well as some new stuff too. The food was pretty good, and the salsa was AMAZING. Yes, I even asked the server if she could smuggle out about a gallon of it for me, but no luck. Now the drinks.....that's an interesting story. Apparently, I got there right on the tail end of their happy hour specials, so my first margarita was at happy hour prices (I didn't know about the price difference until I got my check at the end), and my second was at regular prices. Which makes a lot of sense in retrospect, because the second drink had MUCH more alcohol in it......enough of a difference that I really have to wonder if the "happy hour" one had any tequila in it at all. Interesting........... As for the service......at first, it seemed OK. The server came to the table pretty quickly and brought my drink and some chips & salsa, but once my friends came, service seemed to slow down. And no, they weren't really that busy, there were still several empty tables. And when we wanted our check, things REALLY slowed down.....as in, our server disappeared. We waited almost as long for our check and then for our change as the entire time we spent there prior to asking for the check. However.....I'll probably still go back, maybe just not to eat. I just might have to try out that stripper pole................
(3)Kelsey H.
Went here for a sorority date party, which was super fun! However the food served was just okay... perfect for after a few (or more) tequila shots when you don't care too much what you're eating! They also had shot skis and a stripper pole (bar policy of "women only" on the pole) if you're into those kinds of things!
(2)Gregory C.
Stopped in here on Saturday night with three friends. $6.50 Bacardi and cokes: Yes Kicking everyone out of the bar at 1:30am when I thought the bars in Baltimore close at 2:00am: No
(3)Devonshire B.
I'm sorry to judge it on a single event night (Eve of Thanksgiving Eve Bull Roast), but it was loud and the margarita rail drink didn't have any alcohol in it. Which could only mean that they skimped because I was getting it for free. Fine. One star. Next time (although technically there won't be a next time for me), put some alch in there, be friendlier, and turn the god awful techno remixes down a bit (Mex??). Oh, and sanitize your stripper poles. Yes...there were stripper poles.
(1)Jordan K.
During the CRAZY Mardi Gras Power Plant Party we ended staying here all night as we got a good spot at a table next to the dance poles ;) $25 entry fee to the entire Power Plant for the event with open bar from 9 to midnight. We finally get into the MEX and tried to get drinks, which ofcouse were bottom shelf, no biggie.. all you can drink right... ya until they run out of everything! I got about 5 drinks in and paid for one before midnight. Music and crowd was a good mixture. enjoyed the night, minus waiting in line to use the bathroom or to get a drink.
(3)Angela B.
Initially, I would have rated MEX 3 stars, but a lag in service dropped my rating down to a 2. We stopped by MEX for a happy hour before a concert at Power Plant. We were seated at a high top table outside where we had a perfect view of everything at Power Plant. Drink happy hour specials were pretty solid. 3 dollars for sangria, margaritas, Miller Lite, and Dos Equis. My friend and I both ordered sangria initially, but weren't big fans. It was a bit too sweet and tasted like grape juice. I'm also a little skeptical of the alcohol content .. it definitely wasn't a strong drink. I quickly switched to Dos Equis, which was a much better choice. We ordered the guacamole and chips to start, which was a pleasant surprise. The guacamole portion was huge and it was really fresh! It had fresh tomatoes, onions, and avocado and a really nice kick to it. The chips also tasted pretty fresh and hot. I also really liked the salsa. It was really smoky and fresh. I'm not used to salsa like that in Baltimore, so I was surprised (and happy!). I ordered the chicken tacos and my friend ordered a quesadilla. She enjoyed her quesadilla. My tacos were okay. The chicken was a bit dry, but I liked the overall flavor. The portion was also very reasonable for the cost. All was going pretty well, but when we were ready to close our tab we couldn't find our waitress for about 30 minutes. That being said, I wouldn't come here if you are in a rush! If you check-in here on the Yelp app you get 2 free covers on a weekend. Since I have that, I might potentially check MEX out again.

The bartenders were cool!! Justin was awesome!!! There were not a lot of people there last night. Overall we made it work... reg bar food nothing special. They did have drink and food specials for the game which was good. I also liked that the DJ played during the commercials.
(3)Kimberly B.
Mex staff is the best by FAR in power plant live!!!!! Lola, our bartender was super friendly and attentive, it didn't hurt that she made an excellent white sangria (hint during happy hour they're only $3). We had the guacamole as our appetizer, Lola made it fresh for us when we ordered it and it was delicious. Just the perfect amount of heat and citrus in it. For my entree I had carnitas tacos, one of their weekly specials and they were soooo good! The corn and black bean salsa on them was to die for. My husband had a carne asada burrito, which was the size of a new born baby. Besides it's elaphantine size it was flavorful with a generous mix of ingredients. After dinner we stayed to have a few drinks and as it got later, it turned from more a restaurant feeling establishment to a bar feeling one. Since we'd already eaten we didn't mind! We moved to the outside bar which was perfect for some good clean fun people watching, and thank god for the heat lamps keeping us warm on a cold night! I don't remember the bartenders name outside but he was equally as attentive and helpful and lola, not to mention hilarious (though that may be the tequila speaking. Did I mention they have a ton of it?) Can't wait to go back, a really magic evening.

I was here with my girlfriend and some friends of ours. This place has gone downhill...fast. It used to be that happy hours that you could sign up for would last for roughly 2 hours for about $12. You'd get to drink as much as you wanted in that time period with a small selection of drinks. Then it went up to $15 and you received a few tickets to use for drinks (but then you could always get more at the front). Last night I came to find out they've done away with it and now give you only drink specials which were $3 beers in a Dixie cup and a ticket for a $1 shooter. However that's not what made me never want to come here again. The DJs were, who acted like they had the maturity of middle schoolers. One looked like a Jersey Shore reject and was running around and climbing on the bar with an inflatable penis coming out of his unzipped jeans. Not only that, he had people throwing inflatable rings on it for shots and kept shouting things like "Oh, I'm so close!" and "Man that was good, got a cigarette?" Then later on he started having girls stroke it and asking for them to come up and "show and shake their tits and asses" for him. I'm not a prude by any means, and it takes A LOT to get me offended, but that was unreal. Never will go here again and neither are my friends. The bar has hit a new low.

We ran in here to escape a rainstorm a couple weeks back. We only grabbed beers, so I didn't get the full experience. However, the bartender was friendly and helpful. The beer specials were good. The beer was cold. That's really all I could ask for. Mex is tucked away in a little compound of clubs. It looks like a great area for block parties on the weekend. Check it out.

Wow, just wow. A friend had won a table, so a visit to Mex, was offered for a birthday party. Power plant to me is a no no, for a lot of reasons , this evening I thought to through all I knew of it out for a fun night. I got through multiple lines, one for power plan and then mex, was too long but kinda anoying. Instantly prompted for $12 some sort of all you can drink from 9 to 11. With my only cup I can have unlimited alcohol, on lock down and my limited red tickets I went in through the outside bar. Once inside you will see a spilt wall bar which wraps around the whole bar. There a dj, tvs, a vip area and tables. One side of the bar didnt have high end tequilia so a quick wall to the djs side and there a fair amount of rare and just tequilias. In reality the place has a swag, which is trying too hard. There is a bathroom attended, who through good at his job, I really can press down the soap and grab a paper towel.... Their menu was large and offered a lot to pick from all tex-mex, burritos, fejatiias, etc. All fair in tatse I wasn't overly impressed. So the people watching here is good, I saw a lot of things during my 3 hours, that I could have lived with out seeing . A LOT of things trust me. - Good tex mex food offerings - Great tequilia options - Happy hour from 9 - 11 pm , unlimited rail drinks and beer. ( I asked the hostest about the 'unlimited' drink options once my 5 red tickets were gone, she is able to give more so long as your "not too wrecked, haha") - Long waits and inattentive bartenders

I happened across this place last night before going to a show and I was pleasantly surprised. First, I figured that the area would have been pricey food and pricey drinks, but Mex was not. I got the veggie burrito and didn't think I could eat the whole thing, but it was so good, I couldn't leave any behind. The other people I was with also loved the food. The drinks were good and for I was not expecting a margarita to cost $4, so I was pleasantly surprised. I've noticed people commented on the service but the waitress was very friendly and always on top of things. We liked the place to much we went back to the outside bar after the show, and again, the bartender was very friendly and efficient, even as the crowd got larger. Overall, I can't wait to go back.

I feel like I missed the memo on this place; flat rate open bar is a sweet concept if you can take a full night of rail drinks. The one-cup rule is a flawed system, but at least I get where they were going with that idea. (And no, if you can't figure out how to abuse the system yourself, I'm not helping you. Just in case I end up going back there again.) The phrase "unlimited open bar" doesn't quite mesh with a finite number of provided drink tickets, that's all I'm saying. Heat lamps and an elevated fire pit for the smokers outside. Water from the cold bathroom faucet was scalding hot, and thankfully the washroom attendant warned me in time. Drinks were poured small but reasonably strong. I laughed out of lack of surprise upon hearing that the bartender had to look hard for the bottle of Sapphire gin on Justin C's behalf... and found the bottle tucked in the back, previously unopened. Our two vegetarians in tow were content with the option of a cheese quesadilla. The bite I sampled yielded more cheese than peppers or onions, but the tortilla was nicely toasted on both sides. Playlist varied across the night from danceable to not, and two gentlemen nearby were intent on turning it into karaoke night for awhile. Didn't really get a chance to check out the back section, so can't remark upon that. Sports bar serving Tex-Mex and trying to be cooler than it is? A lot of effort for a bar that didn't really impress.

Antiseptic. That's the word that I'm going to use to describe MEX. Now, don't get me wrong: the crew that I came with kept me rolling and I met some great people. Did MEX itself help liven up that experience? Nah, don't think so. Our group paid $12 per person for open bar throughout the night. Now, here's the definition of an open bar according to dictionary.com : "A bar at a reception that serves drinks whose cost has been borne by the host, an admission charge, a sponsor, etc." Keep that definition in mind, folks. As our group made it inside, we were given a cup with a couple of tickets inside. Now, by this being my first time coming to MEX, I thought to myself, "maybe this might be used for a raffle later tonight." It didn't dawn on me until someone told me that those same tickets are supposed to be given to the bartender for each drink ordered at the bar. Well, I ordered a couple of drinks; the bartender didn't even bother collecting the tickets. Flawed, just like the health care system. Now, onto those drinks that I ordered. I officially learned that creativity doesn't flow pretty well here, hence the term antiseptic. I have learned to no longer ask bartender to use his creative juices to come up with a decent combination. Why? Here's what I ended up being given: 1. Rum & Coke 2. Whiskey & Coke 3. Tequila & Orange Juice I'll give MEX 2.5 stars, round off to 3. The crew made this experience worthwhile though.

My friends and I went to Mex as a last resort - Two Boots had moved and we didn't have much time before a show at Ram's Head. It was a place with food and we were fine with that. We squeezed into a booth by the front door. As patrons entered, we were treated to huge wafts of cigarette smoke from outside. I'm a smoker and still found this awful. The table was not wiped down for us. Again, we needed food and didn't want to raise a stink. We received our beers in plastic cups. The server told us food would be a half-hour wait. My friend had to follow him to the back to request chips for our table. Several plastic cup margaritas went around the table. For a Tex-Mex place, I was surprised at the unappealing flavor. How do you mess up a staple like the margarita? It tasted like whatever mix they used and sugar. Little else. I ordered a medium-well cheeseburger. After eating a third of the burger, I noticed that it was easily the rarest burger I had ever been served. The whole center was uncooked and cold. My stomach turned. Why couldn't I have gotten a medium-well hamburger like my friend - his came out a burnt little hockey puck, but it was at least safe to eat. I have never in my life seen burgers cooked this poorly. This is not exaggeration or hyperbole. I showed the raw insides of the burger to the server and he promptly offered to take it off the bill. "Are you feeling okay?" he asked. "We'll find out," I said. "Let us know if you aren't feeling good later," he said. His concern was nice, but it made me even more paranoid of what was to come. The check came. My friends and I put in our cash and tip and got ready to leave. The server returned several dollars. When we asked why he was returning the money, he said we had given him $68 and the bill was $65. We said no, we gave you $78. He insisted that a $10 in the pile of cash we had given was his from before. Not wanting to stay any longer and argue this, we chipped in a few more dollars and got the hell out. I felt like I was paying the ferryman to get out of underworld. The next morning, I awoke at around 5 am and experienced extreme intestinal discomfort. I spent the day dealing with what my friends and I like to call "bubble guts and sad butt." I'm sorry if that's too depictive, but you need to understand that before you dine at this place, this is what you're in for. I don't want to be mean. I'm just truly shocked at the abysmal treatment and food we were given. ***UPDATE*** I was emailed by the management of Mex and they apologized for the service. While I declined their offer of a gift card, it was nice that they got in touch and showed interest in rectifying the problem.
