Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

What a gem! I cannot say enough good things about Marchionda's. The food is on bar with some of the better Italian restaurants downtown and not quite as pricey. Upstairs is a quiet dinning room. Business casual to dressy, but not stuffy. You really feel like family there, especially when the owner walks the place nightly. I haven't been to the downstairs bar yet, but looks like a nice casual no frills bar. They have a couple of bar-food items, but you can order off the full menu as well. I'm looking forward to the outdoor patio garden once it's finished this summer. We did have one bad experience on our 4th visit. The owner seemed madder about it than we were, and trust me when I tell you, he went above and BEYOND to make it right.

Wow. What a great place. We went with some friend for happy hour a few days ago and I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is separated distinctly into two differet venues. Upstairs is the fine dining area and we were greeted by a maitre'd, waiter, (assumed) owner and another employee - all dressed well...it was early, so it appeared as if they were just getting ready for the dinner crowd. The dining room was small, but well furnished. I was surprised to see that they had while, high-pile carpeting on the main floor where we entered and I believe under the dining tables - risky move when you serve primarily pasta dishes! As we were there for happy hour, we were shown the steps leading to the basement/bar area. (there is a bar entrance outside, but we didn't notice it). The bar is small and casual - dark wooden bar, 10-15 "2 top" tables and a larger area in the front with a large flatscreen and a larger round table for people to drink beer and watch the game at...good enough for me. the happy hour is where its at. from 3(or 4) to 7 pm, 7 days a week: $2 rail drinks, $3 martinis, I forget how much the beer was, but it was heavily discounted as well, and 1/2 off their appetizers. For apps, we got the $4 mozzarella balls (4 to a plate and they were golf ball sized), the $3 Arancini ( 4 mozzarella balls with sausage and risotto) and the $6 crab pretzel. The mozzarella was great, but got cold quick...the size doesn't necessarilly allow for thorough melting. The Arancini wasn't executed as well as I would have liked...they were good, but didnt appear all that different from the mozzarella...I would recommend making the risotto more prominant in this dish. The crab pretzel was HUGE...about 10" long and 4-5" wide. It was absolutely covered with cheese and crab. So good. I noticed and heard from others that the onion was a tad too prominent in this...maybe a smaller dice? Overall I was VERY happy with this visit and would not hesitate to recommend the happy hour to a friend. I hope to make it for a dinner service soon so I can speak to that as well. owners, if you read this...while i appreciate the extremely generous pricing and portions, I would be remiss if I were not to tell you that many of us felt that it was almost too cheap and were worried that that type of business model couldn't last for long. get some bigger signs outside to drive the business in, no need to sacrifice your bottom line!

This is the very best of everything....service, food, atmosphere! You want to get the meatballs, sea bass, peanut butter bomb and everything else on the menu!

This was our 2nd visit to the restaurant and we brought friends who had never eaten there before. As usual, the meal was incredible!! All the homemade pastas are delicious and the meatballs are the best I have ever had! Everyone loved their entrees, service was fantastic and the owner stopped by our table to chat for a while. Felt like family and this has become our "go to" Italian restaurant. If you haven't eaten here, do yourself a favor and get there!

We gave it three attempts and we were dissatisfied every time with the service, food, and price. Our neighbors also felt the same. However, I hope the restaurant survives as opposed to seeing another vacant building on Harford Road.

Coming from an Italian, I've been to many Italian restaurants in Baltimore and this just might be the best! Veal Saltimbocco, delicious! Great bread and drinks too!

NICE!...5 minutes from my front door. Great place for a date. THE FOOD WAS AWESOME!! The staff was very attentive. I selected their salmon for my entry..

Wasn't aware there was going to be a special menu for Valentine's Day which was disappointing to start. Their online menu looked like it had some great dishes that we were unable to event consider. The service was fair....there were two waitresses in the upstairs area but it was sort of unclear who our server was....we got the same questions from both of them on a number of occasions. The appetizer we had, the meatballs, was very good as was the wine. The main course tasted good but the vegetables were cold. Tiramisu for dessert was, however, pretty good.

Had another outstanding meal. Glad to see there was a good crowd on a rainy Saturday night. Started with those incredible meatballs, calamari and had the baked lasagne. A huge portion and wonderful. The others had chicken parm, veal osso buco and fettuccine Alfredo. All were wonderful. Service was great as well. I use lots of superlatives to describe Marchiondas - an attractive restaurant with excellent food - and compared to a lot of other places, a bargain. Too bad they wouldn't let me keep that Peroni beer glass!

Went there a few weeks ago on a Saturday night and the food was very good. Came back this evening and not so good! Soup was cold and osso bucco was pre-prepared & reheated when I ordered it.

Had an excellent meal at this restaurant last night. We had the soup of the day--a seafood with red bell pepper tomato bisque--delicious. I had the potato gnocchi with marinara sauce and asked for meatballs added to it (extra cost). They were delicious, if a titch overcooked--but gnocchi are very hard to get right. The house salad was excellent--and btw: the photo on this website is not the house salad (NOR the house dressing) that I got. The dressing was an excellent balsamic vinaigrette. My friend had the mussels and said they were delicious. The service was excellent also. Run, don't walk: this is a great addition to the restaurant scene in north Baltimore!

This was our first time and we will definitely be back! Everything we ate was amazing! My husband took the advice of another reviewer and ordered the Chilean Sea Bass. He was very happy with his choice and said he was one of the best fish dishes he had ever eaten. I split the chicken parmesan and pistachio pesto gnocchi worth my sister-in-law and both of those dishes were great. The staff was incredibly attentive and friendly. If you are considering a this place for dinner..... Do it!

We went with a large group & loved it! The bar downstairs is charming & barkeep friendly. The patio outback is huge, I can't wait til next summer to take full advantage. They have Peroni on tap! We started with the arancini - I've had these a few times & never been impressed. There's are amazing! So delicious. We also had the special of 'purses' of pasta filled with pumpkin in a sage brown butter sauce. We happened to have made the same thing at home a few weeks ago & enjoyed them- these guys topped that too! We got a variety of main courses, but the Chicken Marcionda was head & shoulders above the rest. And huge! We all took home at least half of our dinners, happily. The bartender said to order garlic bread (it doesn't seem to be on the menu- just the bar chalkboard). A little bit spicy & again a winner! The only stopper in our meal was the scallop special with fettucini- the scallops were great. It was meant to be in a carbonara sauce, but instead came in a super heavy alfredo that knocked us out of the running to try dessert- the final star! Until next time!

Cannot recommend this place enough. I was looking for a new place for my wife and I to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and since it was a weeknight, we wanted to stay local. I am SO glad that we chose Marchionda's. The food was as good or better than I've gotten in Little Italy. The waitress made our night, both with her service and her personality. The only downside to the experience is that there weren't many people there experiencing it. We will definitely be coming back.

I ate here on Sunday. It was good but by no means 5-star. They did provide a complimentary small olive dish and polenta, which was tasty. The foie gras on a compote of prunes was tasty and inventive, though I felt there were too many prunes and not enough toast. But what solidified my impression was the saltimbocca. The veal was tough, and they topped it with a lot of melted cheese, which did not improve things. They served it on top of a cheese risotto, which would have been good on its own, but made the total effect way too cheesy. Don't get me wrong, I love cheese -- but in its place, which is not, in my opinion, under and over saltimbocca. I will probably go back -- I hear they make their own pasta, and there were several other things on the menu I'd like to try -- but next time I will not be expecting a 5-star experience.

Wonderful food, attentive, charming, and knowledgeable service; and a cozy dining room, combined perfectly for a fun and satisfying evening. Among the things we tried were the prepared-just-right calamari, Caesar salad, and four entrees: two six-oz crab cakes on my plate, sea bass, salmon, and chicken for the rest of the group. All were delicious and huge portions (I took one of my crab cakes home and a sizable chunk of the salmon went home to Silver Spring with my daughter). A couple leaving as we were browsing through the menu raved about the lasagna, so that must be just as tasty as the meals we chose. The deserts sounded tempting, but we were all feeling very satisfied at that point and decided to call it an evening and make plans to return another time. A curiosity and worry was that the place wasn't filled - a curiosity because everything from food, to setting, to staff seemed excellent; a worry because it's hard to imagine it can continue on without more customers. I hope that reservations become a necessity in 2014 and that this little gem thrives and becomes a local favorite.

Very good food, friendly service with a neighborhood feel. They are going for a Little Italy feel without the hassle of getting to Little Italy, and they do pretty well. If they didn't have Little Italy prices they would get the full 5 stars.

You know a restaurant is good, when they bring you the wrong order, and it's really, really good. Ordered veal parmasian and got chicken Parmesan. You need to check this place out.

This place is only about three weeks old but I hope it's here to stay. This is where Angelina's used to be and they are really doing this landmark location right. You can't beat these happy hour specials either. I had three beers and the meatballs for a total of about $16. I have already come back and it's only the day after.

Marchionda's is a Parkville gem - not to be missed. The atmosphere is warm and inviting as are the staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and will definitely return.

12/11/14 the food was just OK but.. what hit me when I walked in the front door was the suffocating smell of bathroom disinfectant air freshener. The place smelled like a truck stop. I could not tell where it was coming from til I went to the restroom which is centrally located between the dining rooms. I bet the people who work there have become nose blind to the smell. Also the overhead flood lights were on high giving the place a hideous mood. Golly, I hope they read this review soon.

This restaurant was a massive disappointment. Went on valentines day, and the service was awful. The environment upstairs is cold and strange. Our server wasn't friendly, forgot my glass of wine, and my food came out cold and was tasteless. Would never go back.

There is no need to drive into the city when you have a heavenly establishment like this. From the time you enter and leave it is all smiles and warm welcomes. Food is prepared fresh, never pre-made/reheated and it comes out on a very reasonable time! Pricing of food is excellent for the portion and taste. We were treated as if we were VIP here and Tonney and his crew are outstanding. My husband is Italian and he was floored by the food and service. We will be coming back very soon! They also have gluten free options and vegetarian options as well!

We came here on Valentine's because it was the only Italian restaurant nearby without a limited menu.... Turns out there was without warning. The limited menu did not have any typical Italian dishes. No lasagna no chicken or veal parm. The owner tried to accommodate us but it just didn't quite cut it. Not to mention they ran out of parmesan cheese at 8:00 on a holiday. Their defense was the cooks have an attitude and there is no freezer for back up supplies. Service was good

We recently moved from the upper East side of Manhattan for new jobs nearby. We have been trying a bunch of spots nearby. This is the 1st place prompting a write up. The meatballs (appetizer) and sauce was delicious. The meal, the place ...unpretentious but excellent. Being new to the area, seems like a sketchier part of town but once in doors...so glad to be there. Owner and chef both happened to stop by. We spent exactly what we would have at a chain (3 glasses of red wine each) and the meal was much better. Fresh pasta. Good sauces. Pistachio cheesecake wasn't overly sweet and good texture. Go. To this place.

My husband and I stopped in for an early dinner. The food was absolutely incredible. We started with clams casino, which were yummy! My husband ordered the Osso Bucco and I had the snapper special - we were both blown away. Both of them couldn't have possibly been any better. While we were eating the chef came out to check on the tables- very endearing. We will be back!

We came here for a friends birthday dinner. Our original plan was to go to Sabatino's in the city but we realized there was a festival in little Italy and decided to try this instead. So glad we did! Street parking is plentiful. The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated and feels like a family owned Italian restaurant should feel! Exposed brick, nice linens, fresh flowers, good lighting, overall nice ambience. The food is amazing. We tried caprese salad and it was fresh, nicely portioned and delicious. House salad was also great, and the Parmesan peppercorn house dressing was tasty. The meatball appetizer was soooo good and generously portioned. I tried chicken Parmesan (it was huge) and the pistachio pesto gnocchi...both very tasty. They make their own pasta, and it was all delicious. Dessert and coffee was the perfect end to the night. Service was also on point. Our server was attentive and professional. The owner came by to ask how we were and the hostess checked on us too. Highly recommend! We will be back!

Wow. I feel like a copycat since other reviews for Marchiondas start with wow, but seriously. Wow. Who would have thought this kind of Italian dining experience could be found outside of Little Italy? I know, I know, there are lots of critics of LI as of late (and I am one of them: declining quality, skyrocketing prices, etc.). But one thing LI restaurants have always been known for is their warm atmosphere; each time you come in you are welcomed like a long lost member of their extended family. They practically hug you. This was the kind of experience we had at Marchiondas, and from what I could see, so did every other table there that night. In the essence of full disclosure, I had dinner here with the president of the community association in which Marchiondas resides, so she and the owner Tonney were already quite familiar. He stopped by our table frequently, introduced us to various staff, and even joined us at the end of our meal. He has invested a lot of time, money and love into this place, and it shows. The restaurant is very pretty and spotlessly clean; the online pics don't do it justice: lots of brick and neutral tones and even a small portrait of his mother by the door (Ms. Marchionda herself). He also plans to open up a backyard dining area at some point which sounds lovely. Now on to the food. Complimentary garlic rolls hot from the oven were brought to the table with butter, along with a little snacking dish of polenta sticks and a ramekin of antipasto, containing olives, pepperoncini rings, pickled garlic and other nibbles. It was a nice change up from the tired bread and oil that is everywhere now. My friend ordered a house salad, which was large and looked to have a whole sliced hard-boiled egg on top. For only $3.95 it was worth the price. The house dressing is a creamy Italian; it was good but a touch sweet for my taste however there are other dressings available. We also had an appetizer of calamari ($10.95), which had a light greaseless crust and was nicely seasoned. The accompanying tomato sauce tasted fresh and was not sweet, which is my usual pet peeve with tomato sauce. We also had cups of cream of crab soup ($5.50). It was delicious but a little heavy-handed with the sherry. Not a lot of crab meat, mostly shreds, but the flavor was terrific. I will definitely order this again. For our entrees, I got the Fettuccini Bolognese ($18.95) and my friend ordered Chicken Marchionda ($20.95). My fettuccini was awesome and very different from renditions at other restaurants. The noodles were amazing; Marchiondas pasta is homemade and you can feel the difference in the texture. The noodles were as light as air and cooked perfectly. The sauce was not tomato-y, more beefy and very satisfying, a great stick-to-your-ribs type of dish. The portion is huge, I will probably get a total of three meals out of it. The Chicken Marchionda is their take on Chicken Marsala. It was two large chicken breasts pounded out, as well as several large shrimp, all covered in a mushroom wine sauce with sundried tomatoes and a sprinkle of pine nuts. It also came with roasted potato wedges and broccolini. The plate was almost overflowing with food. My friend let me snag a bite and it was flavorful and delicious. A good way to go if you aren't going full carb with pasta. We ended our meal by sharing the tiramisu. It was pretty standard; I would try the pistachio cheesecake next time since that sounds so different. This place is a great addition to the Harford Road corridor. Marchiondas is trying hard to be a good neighbor to the community by hyping community events and attending meetings for the betterment of the area. They will soon be offering delivery to a limited area, plan to start opening for lunch in the very near future and already have some great daily specials in place (Tuesday in the bar only, 1 lb. of steamed shrimp and a pitcher of beer for $13.95!). I am excited to have such a great place on my route home from work (carryout!) and plan to return soon with family and friends.
