India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The ever-increasing fan base of Indian food around the New York city is steadily increasing because of the large number of Indians who traveled to the land of dreams. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West. While most of the Indian population is Vegetarian, Indian food is great for people who are looking for vegan or vegetarian food option. If you are a Meat lover, don't get disappointed yet. Indian food also boasts of some popular non-vegetarian dishes too. Few examples are the famous Butter Chicken, Mutton Biryani and Tandoori Chicken are enough to satisfy your taste buds.
Indian food has gained reputation all over the world especially in the United States. You can find many places serving the appetizing Indian food across all major cities in the US. India is a diverse country with different food culture originated from different parts of the country. While the Northern region boasts tandoori dishes and korma offering royal taste, the Western Ghats offers sea foods that is made in naturally sweet tender coconut milk. The South Indian food servers a quality of different dishes made from rice accompanied with spicy chutneys, curries and famous sambhar. Also, the Indian sweets are a delight to relish. If you ever want to have a burst of sugar syrup in mouth, don't forget to try few Bengali Sweets. Be it spicy, tangy, or sweet flavor, you can find everything in the Indian cuisine. Excellent Indian food at decent prices!

Great lentil soup. I love the traditional tibetan dish! So yummy. I will definitely come back here. They have $10 buffet from 11A-2P Monday-Friday.
(5)Peter C.
My wife and I eat here almost weekly. Best Indian food in Baltimore hands down. You will not be disappointed. Delivery is very reasonable. 30-35 minute average. What I love: Momo Soup, chicken tikka-masala, tandoori anything, garlic naan!

Went for Sunday brunch a few weeks ago, because of distance and to try it out. Not as good as the parent restaurant, and they are much slower to replenish the dishes. I would take the extra time to go to the one on Charles St. for better food.

Located next to Shoppers in Locust Point, this Kumari is the younger sibling to the Kumari on Charles St in Mt Vernon. The lunch buffet here, compared to the other location's, promises the same excellent service and the same delicious complimentary chai tea, with about 2/3 of the variety. It is priced more inexpensively, though, at $9.95. For the lunch buffet, you'll be able to choose from a variety of chutneys, ~10 different dishes (including aloo fish, butter chicken, pakora, spinach paneer, goat curry), and one dessert like gulab jamun (doughnuts in sweet syrup). Shortly after you're seated, a basket of naan will be brought to your table. During my most recent visit, the naan was initially warm and fluffy; however, after a few minutes, the heat magically dissipated and the texture became chewy and tough. Major bummer. At the bare minimum, an Indian buffet should be able to make great naan that can taste delicious for more than a few minutes! The dining area is just a small and cozy room, and it's easy to overhear conversations at adjacent tables. If you'd prefer a dining space where you can have a more private conversation, or if you want more variety, head north to the Indian buffet mecca on Charles street in Mt Vernon, featuring four Indian buffets (Akbar, Nepal House, Indigma, and Kumari) within a few blocks of each other. But for a chill neighborhood-friendly Indian restaurant in Fed Hill / Locust Point, this place is sufficient!

My friend and I eat here at least twice a week. I am obsessed with their lunch buffet. This is the best indian buffet around.
(5)George P.
A friend and I ordered to go, and got: veggie samosas, lamb vindaloo, palak paneer and mixed veggie pasanda. All were spicy like we specifically requested and delicious. For a small carryout/buffet type of Indian/Nepalese joint, this place was great and fast considering the size of our order. Definitely recommend if you are in the neighborhood and are craving some authentic eastern spices.

The buffet is definitely they way to go if you're going to eat here. The entrees at dinner time are a little pricy - and there's almost too much to choose from. The buffet is a great deal (if you are able to make it during the week!) and you can try a bunch of different things, which is my favorite thing to do at Indian restaurants. There were a lot of people dining alone, so don't be afraid to stop in for lunch if you're in the area by yourself! Both times I've been here the staff has been friendly. I will say I wasn't a huge fan of the chicken tikka masala, which seems to be most people's favorite. The sauce was wayyy to thick and creamy for my liking. But everything else was quite good.

purchased for take out numerous times. I really can't emphasize how good their tandoori salmon is. the navoratma korma is so delicious and chock full of vegetables! and the malai kofta is simmered in the yummiest of sauces! but by far my most favorite is their very spicy vegetable briyani - most places make it seem like just a tossed together fried rice but this is flavored so well and packs a nice level of heat! and the owner is such a nice and friendly person. gem of locust point! himalayan is the other indian place around here but kumari has better seasoning and flavor.

I've been here for both dinner and the lunch buffet. Dinner is nice enough, with a pretty solid interpretation of the classic Indian "hotel" food, which is to say, restaurant food as opposed to home cooking in India. The Nepali specialties I've tried are some noodles, momo dumplings, and the classic dal bhat tarkari (rice lentils and vegetables). All are pretty tasty, but not really special. I'd say stick to the more indian style dishes. Dinner is a little on the pricey side compared to other Indian places, but the ambience is clean and quiet, so you're paying for that too. Almost every dish is rich: either creamy or oily. This isn't a bad thing, just something to be aware of. It can catch you off guard when you order baingan bharta, typically a flavorful thick mash of eggplants, and get a creamy eggplant curry instead. The richness is certainly in line with Indian expectations of food you get when eating out. The lunch buffet is where this place really shines. They definitely put their "A" lineup out on the buffet in terms of taste. There is always a light salad course, which I skip if I'm in a rush. For the vegetarian side, you'll usually get a veggie fritter, a spinach based dish, a lentil based one, and a paneer based one. The rice is always a veggie pilaf or meat/egg biryani. The meat and fish selection rotates, but expect a grilled chicken, chicken tikka masala, lamb or goat curry, and a fish dish (usually curry or manchurian). Naan bread is included, then add in dessert and tea, and this buffet is incredible! The selection is what makes this so great, you can try a bite of all your favorites, and they all taste great. The staff are super friendly too. If you're looking for a flavorful lunch in the area, I can't recommend this place enough. If you're looking for a quiet dinner for a small premium, come here, BYOB, and you probably won't be disappointed either.

Solid 4 stars. Tried them for take-out (delivery) as I had just moved here and was deciding on an indian place. Delivery took a while (although it was a friday night). The food was very good. Tried their various pakora apps which were really good. Chicken korma was good but it tasted kind of buttery/coconutty compared to other varieties ive had. Also the rice portion for takeout was small compared with other places. Online ordering made it very easy. Very large menu. Solid indian place; I hear the lunch buffet is good. I compared them with himalayan house and himalayan house has a slight lead!

Lunch buffet is Delicious and a great variety. Every dish was fresh, hot and rich. Perfect if you're not overly familiar with Nepalese or Indian foods. Very efficient for a filling and economical lunch. The staff are nice. Bonus, free parking/lot. I can't believe I've never been there before.

This review is for the KUMARI location on FORT AVE: Incredible food, go eat Nepalese/Indian elsewhere and then come back to KUMARI for the best. Clean restaurant, plenty of free parking, exceptionally nice wait staff, and incredibly seasoned, and wonderfully prepared food (lamb so tender it melts in your mouth!). I've yet to find anything on the menu that wasn't fantastic. In particular try the lamb saag, and momo dumplings to really get a taste of what they can do. My recommendation on nann choices would be their whole wheat roti (maybe the second best nann in the area). I drive thru the tunnel, or bike across the city to eat here... Take that as high praise indeed. Their food is priced on about the average for decent Indian/Nepalese, but I have found their portions to be a bit more generous. Bring a friend and delight!
(4)James E.
I had gone here for the lunch buffet on a Thursday. All the hot foods were nicely maintained, warm and delicious. The cold items were also nice and crisp. I have been to a handful of Indian/Nepali buffets and this once is definitely held in high regard. The item selection for the buffet wasn't overwhelming and you could tell they paid great attention to each item they are offering. Overall, a good choice for someone new to Indian cuisine or a regular.
(5)Pat L.
Solid but nothing special. The vindaloo was good, the chilly chicken flavorful but a little too sweet. Aloo Gobi was pretty bland. Naan was fresh and crisp. I'd recommend if looking for an indian food fix, but not going to knock your socks off.
(3)Meredith J.
I order from Kumari way too often. It's one of my favorite places in the neighborhood. I've even ordered and taken Kumari to friend's houses and they rave about the food. My usual order is the Coconut Korma (with shrimp) and garlic naan. Both are delicious and recommended. I'm knocking off a star simply for inconsistencies (and one consistency which drives me nuts). First off, there's not enough shrimp, and when I specify to add shrimp onto the order, they never do. Second, inconsistencies: sometimes there are cashews in the sauce (which I love) and sometimes there are none at all. The chefs need to communicate to make sure they are all following the same type of recipe. In addition, sometimes the shrimp is way overcooked.
(4)Claire C.
I ordered the chicken chili(hot) and the lemon basmati rice. Both dishes are amazing. The chicken chili comes with a small container of white rice and the spice is very good for hot. The lemon rice has a ton of flavor. I will definitely be ordering again!
(5)Casey C.
I would have formerly given this place 3/4 stars for delivery but twice in a row we got rubbery, undercooked chicken and I just can't give them another shot after that. The buffet was great but really who wants to eat an indian buffet then head back to work?Best part of this place is the Naan.
(1)Rahim H.
I ordered the butter chicken, the chili chicken and the Nepali vegetable sampling platter and everything was excellent! The butter chicken was a bit too heavy for my liking but I highly recommend the chili chicken and the garlic naan too!!
(4)Jerine B.
Chicken tikki Masala is my go to dish for Indian food that orange sauce with its creamy taste instantly makes me happy! So when I saw the lunch buffet sign on the sidewalk I dragged my hubby off our intended path (subway) into this little restaurant.once seated we were told to begin whenever we liked n brought the bread basket with fresh hot naan, now if u can smell the buttery flavor of the bread before it even gets set before u then ur dealing with authentic Indian grandma style cooking- she dnt care about ur waistline jus that ur full n happy n I'll take that! So I stuffed on my favorites, tried napali tea for the 1st time n it was lovely.discovered I love mango chuckney n ofcourse tamerind sauce is to b spread on everything! Just try it u'll love it!

This place just opened, and I guess it is the 2nd branch of the one in Mt Vernon. I have never been to that one, so I can only comment on this one. This is the best Indian food I have had. I went for the lunch buffet the other day, and couldn't stop eating. All of the food was cooked perfectly, they had a good selection. The chef told me they change it up everyday. My brother and friend were raving about the tea and coffee too (I didn't have any). Fed Hill has been missing a great Indian place, and this one is in the reviving shopping center with the Shopper's. If you want great Indian food, you should definitely give this place a try. It will make you a regular quickly!
(5)Teri P.
I ate lunch at Kumari yesterday, and enjoyed the buffet so much, that I ordered delivery tonight! First - the buffet is a great way to taste a little bit of items you might not be familiar with, or that you might not normally order. The restaurant is in a strip mall & after thinking it's a completely random spot for a restaurant - finally checked it out. It's BYOB, which is awesome! Service was great - helping to decipher menu items and filled beverages quickly. For delivery tonight - Generous portions, arrived still hot at my door - even the Nepali tea! Ordered the Chicken Tikki Masala, and the Aloo Gobi Masala, along with some Garlic Naan. Everything tasted great & the delivery made me very happy on this rainy windy night :)
(4)Susan K.
lunch buffet is great. for the price, no beating it. and the atmosphere is fine-- for lunch. for dinner-- food is great but not a place to linger. order delivery and have it with your own wine.
(4)Bruce K.
Went to Kumari this evening and was pleasantly surprised! The restaurant is located in a shopping store center (including Shoppers, Chipotle and Starbucks) so parking was no problem. The decor was warm and comforting and made the experience here that much better. Our host/waiter was always ready to refill our waters and answered any questions we had about the dishes on the menu. We ordered the meat samosas, garlic naan and the chicken marsala. All the flavors meshed well and the dipping sauces that came with the starter "chips" were delicious. The naan was cooked to perfection and had a slight crisp on the outer edges. Enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and the service! Gave it four stars just because the prices are a little higher than other Indian restaurants but regardless, I will definitely come back!
(4)Jon W.
Sorry, amigos, I can't hang. It's definitely a 'Meh', In that it's no Tandoor Grill, but it'll serve in a pinch. This is my second Sugary Chicken Korma - So not a fan. We did enjoy the Samosas and the Naan, but the main courses left something to be desired. I still think we would order delivery if we have an indian food jones that needed to be satisfied.
(2)M J.
My coworkers and I eat here all the time. The food is so good! The lunch buffet is about $10. Who can beat that? The chai tea and halwa is amazing. You won't be disappointed with the food. I've ordered delivery from the other location and it arrived piping hot and fast! About 35 mins. Kumari is one of my go to places for Indian food in Baltimore. They are the best that I've tried in the downtown/fed hill area. Give them a try!
(5)Amy K.
We were so excited to have an eat-in Indian place open in the neighborhood and Kumari lived up to our expectations! Everything we've ordered has been great and the employees are very friendly when you call to place an order for pick up.
(5)Homestead C.
Needed a quick and pleasant meal while driving down I-95. Kumari was close and their menu fit the bill. The service was polite and extremely friendly, and the food was exceptionally good. You just never know with these little hole-in-the-wall places that are tucked into strip malls, but have no fear. The mango lassi was refreshing, the cucumber salad was fresh and crisp, and the tandoori chicken was perfectly seared and extremely flavorful. Thanks again to the wonderful staff for the complimentary tea after our meal; it really set us up to complete our day's drive. We'll be returning on another of our frequent drives up the coast.
(4)Sarah T.
When visiting family in Baltimore, I always go to Kumari. Their food is great (and they always ask about spice level and then actually listen -- perfect for someone who doesn't want bland food just because they're white). I've only ever been there for dinner, but I think the food is really good and the prices are reasonable. The garlic naan is excellent, and I really like their Malai Kofta and Aloo Gobi Masala. Also, the service is always fantastic.
(5)Marianne K.
The Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan are delicious!
(5)Kimberly D.
Delicious Indian/Nepalese food. Am so glad they are in my neighborhood now! While having the same name as the North Charles Street restaurant might be confusing, this one is nestled in between a Chinese food restaurant and a dry cleaning store in the Shopper's mall on Fort Avenue. Had take out tandorri chicken which was great and freshly cooked and the tikka masala which I liked a little less due to the white chicken hunks (although my husband liked it a lot). The naan bread was different than I had before slightly smaller but really good to sop up the delicious sauces which each tasted different. I also had the dahl which was yummy, more of a soup than a side dish. The people who work there are really nice and offered me Masala tea while I waited for my take out order. It took about 20 minutes since it is obviously freshly cooked the right amount of time to get my groceries at Shoppers. I will be back next time I am doing an afterwork Shopper's run. Maybe for the lunch buffet too. Not sure if it is BYOB.They modulated the spices so mine was not spicy at all but very tasty.
(4)Liane R.
Went in for dinner early on a Saturday evening. We were the only diners in, and only one person came in to pick up take-out. It's too bad the business was slow, because the food is great! We ordered two vegetable dishes and the whole wheat roti bread. The waiter was very helpful and showed us all the dishes we could order as vegans - the options are pretty extensive. We will definitely visit again!
(4)Miles K.
Shabby strip mall digs. Not much seating. Damn fine food. Had the late lunch buffet. Everything was delicious. Nicely spiced and well seasoned. The included Nepal tea was warm and sweet. They said they regularly change the buffet selection so it's worth going back to try a variety of new dishes. There is an a la carte menu for dinner which is something we will definitely try. It's also a BYOB establishment which is a plus.
(4)Melissa G.
I've eaten at Kumari three times now and really enjoyed all of my meals. The service is excellent and it's BYOB. You can stop by the Wine Market (in the plaza just a block away) and get a nice bottle of wine or beer to go with your meal, which makes for a cheaper than usual night out. (I don't even think they charge a corking fee). This isn't the best Indian/Nepalese food I've ever had, but in comparison to other Baltimore restaurants (as opposed to Philly), it certainly stands out. I enjoy getting the Nepali Bhojan (non-vegetarian) and Daal Bhat Set (vegetarian), which seem to be Nepalese versions of Bento. You get a little bit of a number of dishes to try, and it's all very good. All of the Indian dishes I've had have been above average, and the naan and chutneys are great. Also, as others have said, the Chai is excellent. This Kumari has the same menu as the Mount Vernon Kumari, and the food seems to taste the same, so I'm assuming that they're owned/operated by the same people. In any case, it's a really great addition to Riverside/Locust Point.
(4)Darren R.
This was my first time at Kumari, they just opened a week or two ago. I had the Katchumber salad and the goat curry. Both dishes were excellent, great taste and the ingredients all seemed very fresh. The service was really good as well, very professional attentive(while not being annoying) and polite. Definitely will be back. This place is a great addition to all the places moving into LOCUST POINT (not fed hill).
(4)Ashley V.
Love this place! I have never tried Indian before coming to this restaurant and I never thought I would like it. To be honest, I found that I love the butter chicken and I don't get anything else because it's so good. I do like that Kumari has the lunch buffet because it allows a person like myself who afraid to try new Indian food the option of sampling different things. The wait staff is great, they are attentive and very friendly. I go to this place once a week and have never had a complaint.
(5)Rebecca S.
This place is amazing! I'm so happy to have a good Indian restaurant in my neighborhood. Great, friendly service and delicious food. I can't wait to go back. Also a plus that it has parking!
(5)Allan T.
Update: I've been back many times and also have received delivery. Excellent every time. Try the Nepalese meal with lamb! PS this isnt Indian food so please do not review it as if it is. I was very, very pleasantly surprised by Kumari. I had this silly belief that good food couldnt not possibly be produced out of that strip mall and I was dead wrong. The menu is strong; not too big and it doesnt drift too much into non-Nepalese food. I'd recommend what I had to anyone; the Nepalese meal (veg). It's reasonably priced and is and excellent sampling of the cuisine. Most importantly, the food was executed flawlessly by someone who knows what they're doing and it is perfectly fresh; but it wont stay that way unless we give them business! So FedHill people and others, get your butt over there because we need this restaurant to be in business for a long time.
(5)PB M.
Great food and the buffet is not bad either. Chai is an awesome treat after your meal.
(5)Michele N.
I was at Shopper's when I saw this place and decided to give it a try. The lunch buffet immediately caught my eye when I walked in, there were so many dishes that the table took up about half the restaurant! Unfortunately, the place was packed for lunch, so I opted to order carry out, and had to miss the buffet....or so I thought. As I was browsing the menu, the host informed me that the lunch buffet was also available for carry out AT THE SAME PRICE! I then skipped over to the buffet table and happily filled my container to the brim. The host then gave me my own naan wrapped in foil, an extra container for the dessert, and a cup for the tea. I basically got the whole buffet experience to go. Highlights of this meal were the chicken tiki marsala, fish curry, and the naan! Also make sure you try the chai tea. This place puts all the other chai teas I've ever had to shame! Great food, great service- definitely recommend this place.
(5)Timmy T.
Best Indian food in bmore! So happy to have Indian food back in fed hill/locust point area again!
(5)k r.
Great food & service! The chaat appetizer & butter chicken were delicious. Daal makhani was great too. (The chicken chili average)
(4)Patrick T.
11 months later, no real improvement. Specifically asked for spicy and it was bland. Flavor was OK nothing special. Service a little slow considering only one other table occupied and apparently sparse takeout that evening. It was even a little pricey for what we ordered. Clean and friendly but just no big deal
(2)Cathee L.
Love this place! Never too busy, even though it's relatively small. We always go for the lunch buffet, which has a great selection and comes with fresh naan. Service is very good (it's always the same guy!) and the food is tasty. If you have the chance, though, visit their location in Mt. Vernon --best Indian food I've ever had.
(4)Brian M.
I was in town for business and I stumbled upon this gem while killing some hours before my flight out. I walked by and saw the sign said that the lunch buffet was starting in 15 minutes so I waited until that started then walked in. The buffet has about 12-14 main dishes and 4 cold sides/salad type dishes. I'm vegan so I didn't try them all but the ones that I did were absolutely delicious. It tasted exactly what I suspect real authentic Indian food tastes like. The star of the show was the super fresh and hot garlic naan that comes straight from the kitchen (yum!). You can get as much as you like and it does not disappoint. I wish I lived in the area so I could frequent Kumari all the time. If I'm ever back in the area I definitely know where I will be heading. Don't wait and head to Kumari to get a delicious meal.
(5)Sally H.
Best tiki masala I've had. Came with sauce on the side, perfectly spiced, and topped with peppers. Huge difference from the pool of sauce I'm used to slopping through to find chicken when I order this dish elsewhere. When they forgot an item they came back with it immediately, and included a complimentary side. I can't see myself ordering Indian anywhere else after this and am excited to try more of their specialties!
(5)Drew P.
I could make a meal out of those steamed chicken Momo's.... Wow! I have been back twice and I love everything from the Nepalese section of their menu.
(5)Marlena R.
This place works for me, its not the Bombay Club in DC but its always a good go to spot when I want safe tasty indian food.
(4)Nicole M.
if i could i would give 10 stars. the food was sooo good and service was amazing. their garlic naan was really good too.
(5)Kris L.
A small restaurant with a cozy feel...but u have a feeling most of their orders are for carry out! It was empty on a weekday. Had the chicken tikka. Apparently the Medium spiciness level barely has any spiciness! next Time will ask for extra spice! Chicken biryani is fabulous, spicy, and filling. Service was great. Overall a solid 4 stars.
(4)Andrew Q.
Quick delivery and great food
(4)Francie L.
I come here all the time for takeout, delivery, and dining in. There's also a lunch buffet that's a great deal even if not a huge selection (but whatever, when it comes to Indian food I'll eat whatever is put in front of me provided it's good quality). We don't have a lot of Indian options in South Baltimore so thank goodness Kumari is delicious! Their "spicy" here is not too bad, even for my gringa self, so if you love the chilis you may want to ask for an extra spicy option? Recommend: the Butter Chicken and the garlic naan. Oh heck, just get it all. Indian food makes good leftovers.
(5)Alexis L.
Came in here for lunch with co-workers last week. We all did the lunch buffet and I was very pleased with it. It's a rather small buffet but for the price ($10), you can't beat it. Everything I tried was very tasty. Free naan at the table is also an added bonus. The restaurant is very small but they were able to accommodate our party of six. I look forward to coming back here for lunch again.
(4)Derek I.
I wish this place was the bomb since I live very close to it, but I fully agree with Jon W.'s review. There tandoor selection is lacking and the food is really oily---like BP level and salty. The palak paneer and veggie korma was like mush. Trust me, the Indian/Nepalese places on Charles are a lot better option.
