It was fine. I still think Sushi Hana is better. went here on the recommendation of others, and while the sushi was fine, it was not as good as sushi hana. There was nothing wrong with anything, the rice was good, the fish was pretty fresh, it just didn't gel together into awesome. Thier ginger was good, but when the ginger is the part you remember, that's saying something.

Good sushi! My fave is Nate Roll which has lump crab meat on top! First time I've ever had one cz most rolls in other places use crab sticks.. Try Kamikaze roll and New Orleans roll too. They got wide selection of rolls. What I didn't like was d male server that we had. So cold and impersonal service.

Went to dinner with my best friend last Saturday evening. They do sushi right. The vegetable spring rolls were crunchy, hot and creamy. The Godzilla Roll was perfect. The tuna was moist and the outside was perfect. She had the Queen Roll which was perfect. I also had the Fireworks Roll. Fresh tuna in a perfect balance. Overall it was the best sushi I had in a long time. It was a little cramped in the place but it was well worth the money. Oh, get the fried ice cream...mine was yummy

Definitely a great Sushi place, ranking among the top in Baltimore. Specialty rolls here are great, especially the New Orleans Roll and Treasure Roll. There are a ton of vegetarian options, which is great if you're having sushi with vegetarians. Deserts here are also pretty good: The banana tempura sundae was quite unique and delectable. With two floors, there is usually a ton of space and I've never had to wait, although getting a reservation wouldn't be a bad idea. I do have to say, the "OPEN" lights flashing on the windows are a bit distracting especially if you're seated by the windows.

Their menu is enormous. Some are more adventurous than others, some even weird. Cheese? no thanks. But you will most likely find a few rolls that you will absolutely enjoy. Ingredients are very fresh, and the rolls are very big. 2 rolls at lunch gets you salad and soup, which are basic but alright. Parking can get dicey, since there's only like 4 spaces, unless you block someone else.

Me and my better half had a taste and decided to step outside our regular Sushi spots...I just happened to be on Google Maps and found this wonderful restaurant. The service was great, and the sushi was the best I've had in Maryland. Their specialty rolls are awesome. Forget the standards go for the special stuff...we loved it

I only had carry out but the a ingredients were all super fresh and love their level of spice on the spicy tuna. Will definitely be back! Only downside is parking is tight.

Great place to go with friends who may want cooked rolls--they have quite a variety. My friend liked the age-tofu--which is usually her litmus test for sushi places. Don't ask why. We had a veggie roll, a soft-shell crab roll, some eel/shrimp/tuna rolls and all was excellent. Ambiance is friendly, dim, and intimate. But you didn't get the feeling that people were listening to your conversation. I'd come again because of the range of menu options. We used a Groupon and it worked well, no problems.

The food was really good! We were a little skeptical after our difficulty parking and strange greeting ("You'll be upstairs" Well, we've never been here before. How do we get there, is it behind us? Oh, it's behind you? Ok, we'll follow you.) We ordered the yellowtail roll, rainbow something(?), paradise and dynamite (we weren't in an adventuresome mood). The quality of the fish is great. We'll be back if we're in the area.

This place is not what it once was. At one time it was my 'go too' restaurant for Sushi. Two bad experiences and now I 'go to' other restaurants when I am in the mood for Sushu

Chiyo Sushi!! I found you! After 5 months in Baltimore, I finally found the perfect spot for any night I suddenly say "MUST HAVE SUSHI NOWWW" (it happens A LOT) I had miso soup and seaweed salad to start - both were excellent and slightly unique. And then...THE SUSHI. Holy hanna, give me that white tuna & avocado hand roll, salmon sashimi, and uni nigiri forever and ever. Everything tasted right off the boat. So fresh it couldn't have been better, and I haven't said that in a while about a sushi place. Other bonuses include the people are nice and welcoming, the vibe is relaxed, and sitting at the bar alone I didn't feel like a loner weirdo - cuz at some places, I do. Really, this is a huge plus for me, just slightly behind how amazing the food is. Maybe now I'm sounding like a weirdo. Maybe I should just embrace being a weirdo and cower alone in the corner of average sushi bars around Baltimore. No thanks, the food isn't as good as Chiyo. I'LL BE BACK (said with Austrian accent)

Woah. Baltimore actually has a decent sushi place?! I have to say, this is one of the top sushi joints in this area. Had the combination with a variety of raw sashimi with the beef teriyaki. Came with a side salad and soup for a little over $20ish. Portions are pretty gigantic. Appreciated the variety of sides and left with a food coma. Aside from the overly drenched beef teriyaki, the raw sashimi sushi was darn FRESH. Totally surprised me! Aaah..def have a new spot for the sushi craving. This is the place you should go for some darn good, fresh sushi. If only they can fix their parking situation.

Wow! My boyfriend and I decided to check this place out due to yelp reviews, soooo glad we did! We have now been there 3 weekends in a row. I do not eat any meat, fish or dairy but even so - they had enough choices to satisfy any veg head. Not to mention they had vegetarian specialty rolls that are not just your average avocado & cucumber roll. SOO GOOD! My boyfriend tried several of the popular rolls based on yelp and loved every single one. I believe he got the Queen roll, tuna roll, few sashimi.. no complaints from him :) The only downside is the parking. We managed to go around 3:30 on Saturdays, right after they opened and haven't had an issue. I could definitely see this lot fill up QUICK, but that's Mt. Washington for you! The warm hand towels before/after dinner and the bubblegum is a nice touch. Can't wait to return.

It is Japanese owned Shushi restaurant. At that point the quality is better than most Baltimore Chinese Japanese restaurants. I have been in it only once, Currently everything is good. Will update my review with following visiting

I had sworn off sushi after a couple of bad experiences years back, but was lured to Chiyo Sushi with an Amazon Local deal. I have been completely converted back to the dark side. Everything here was fantastic, and the service delightful. The Dragon Ball was phenomenal! I can't wait to go back.

Very quaint establishment in Mt Washington. Reasonable prices and the staff was very attentive. The Geisha Roll was outstanding! There is an extensive sushi menu with a selection to satisfy many tastes.

This place is officially in the Baltimore hall of shame of nasty sushi. Joining esteemed company of Nanami, Matsuri, and Sticky Rice is no mean feat but Chiyo achieves this and more with ease. If you think this reprehensible establishment is good I guess you like "sushi" rolls. Good for you. The people who work here are really nice and I feel bad for trashing their workplace but sorry, they suck at restaurants. I can't begin to describe all the ways this place fails at every level. The worst part is the cost! It would've gotten three stars if you didn't need a second mortgage to eat raw sewage! Also, sorry "authentic" asians but authentic people of any background are perfectly capable of completely murdering food as you "authentically" asian reviewers and Chiyo demonstrate with flying colors. I just ate here and I feel sick. Follow in my footsteps at your own peril.

This is my go to sushi place if I'm not up for a drive out of the County. Chiyo's special rolls are what set it apart from the competition. It's not that they're anything more unique than what you can find elsewhere, but you can tell the ingredients are fresh and well balanced making each piece a pleasing mouthful. All the other non-sushi items are a blend of decent to ho-hum. For example, when I'm in the mood for tempura, the ebi assortment is fine. But regardless of how badly you want teriyaki, I would avoid it. The age tofu is surprisingly well made here, but the udon is lackluster. So really, stick to the sushi and you won't go wrong. One thing that is a guarantee is the good service. The staff is always friendly, quick to bring you what you may need and willing to offer a suggestion if needed. Knowing how difficult their parking situation is, they have been known to run outside to help a customer park/back out of their lot. All that on top of the warm towels before/after you dine and the little boxes of gum with your bill - it doesn't get much more charming than that.

Enormous selection of sushi rolls, many of them cooked or fried in some fashion. Like P F Chang's has Americanized Chinese cooking, Chiyo Sushi has Americanized Japanese Sushi. Everything I had tasted great but it did not taste authentic Japanese. This is not "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" quality sushi-- this is more of a good place to take people who are made queasy by the idea of raw fish. Mayonnaise or cream cheese finds its way into or on many selections. Lot's of fried or baked roll options. Nothing was bad but it was not authentic Japanese style sushi.

  • Lauren S.

This is one of the few Japanese places I've been to, where they have Japanese staff, and Japanese people actually eat here. (I speak Japanese, so I over-hear stuff.) Heck, the place even plays Japanese Pop music. The food here is really good. I've only ever had the sushi, and it's always been fresh and delicious. I also like that they have (or had) orange Ramune. The prices are good, and the place is clean. Plus, after dinner you can walk around Mt. Washington, which is a charming little area!

Chiyo Sushi has defenitely boosted their choices of rolls. They are friendly and easy to talk to. Defenitely one of those "secret sushi" spots. I highly recommend going there.

Some of the best sushi I've had in Baltimore! Cozy feeling restaurant with even more seating upstairs and all the staff were very friendly. They have their own private parking lot so no need to worry about parking. Sushi was delicious! Our favorite was the 'james roll'.

I'm a fan of Chiyo Sushi. Is it the best sushi I've ever eaten? No, of course not. I've eaten the sushi of 2 world champion sushi artists and this is not in the same league BUT this is Baltimore. And our legacy of legit sushi places, ranges from not so good to food poisoningly inedible. This place is reliable, reasonably priced, charming and occasionally has blue fin tuna! They'll make you whatever roll you want, and they have a great variety of rolls that are interesting but not too gimmicky. They make a greak spicy tuna roll and a delcious roll called a "crunchy tuna roll" with spicy tuna, avocado, tobiko and tempura flakes. It's a great place to meet somebody for a "catching up" dinner/lunch and there is parking, which is nice. It's my sushi place of choice at the moment.

I was referred to Chiyo by a friend who used to own a restaurant in Washington Village when I asked him for a good, authentic Japanese restaurant. I was a little disappointed that none of the staff I encountered spoke Japanese, but such is life on the East Cost aside from Manhattan. Service was decent, food was decent, nothing stuck out though. Not bad, but not amazing.

This place has downright great sushi - from what I've seen, a wonderful selection of fresh fish, and then a really good selection of vegetable rolls, which I take advantage of often. My friend an I went the other day, and she had the Tekka Don (raw tuna), which she loved. I had the vegetable sushi assortment, which came with a vegetable roll and then the usual veggie sushi assortment - all dishes were beautifully presented. We did order the edamame as an appetizer, and it was a bit overcooked, but still good. My only complaint is that the service was SUPER slow. I'm not sure if they had a lot of takeout orders, or if they just took their time, but we got there at 6:45, ordered around ten minutes later, and it took them about 20 minutes to bring us our edamame. We didn't even get our main dishes until around 7:40 or so. Normally I'm fine with slower service, but I felt this was a little excessive, hence the one star off. When we ordered our dessert (banana tempura) and told her that we were in a hurry to leave, the waitress had it out to us in about five minutes, so it was a nice recovery. All in all - amazing food, but don't come here if you're in a hurry to go catch a movie. Also, be aware that parking is a bit tight.

This is honestly my favorite sushi place in Baltimore. They have the freshest sushi I've had here, the service is (almost) always great, the presentation is great--who doesn't love a cucumber cut into a palm tree??--the prices are modest, and the location is nice. I'm very very picky about sushi since I'm weird about eating raw fish, and I've loved every roll I've ever ordered here. They also have some really good unique/special rolls too. The parking lot SUCKS! I mean...SUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKKSSSSSS! But that's Mount Washington for you. Don't let that keep you from eating here.

One of the best sushi experiences of my life. Upon entering the restaurant, the owners are very friendly and make you feel right at home. We came late on a weekday night and there were still many customers walking in and out getting their sushi orders to go. The owners were friendly and did not hesitate to recommend their specialty rolls and dishes to us...all of them definitely hit the mark and did not disappoint. Their award-winning Geisha roll was fresh, tasty and definitely a standout among all the rolls we ordered. I also really enjoyed the Volcano roll, which is warm and spicy. But be warned, have some self-control when first eating this roll because if you stick the whole thing in your mouth when it first comes out, it will burn...trust me...I had to learn this the hard way. I usually only order sushi at sushi restaurants. To me that's what makes sense because that's probably the only thing they're good at. I was happy to be proven wrong by Chiyo Sushi. Their non-sushi dishes were just as good, dare I say, even better than their sushi rolls! The dragon balls dish, which although has a funny name was so flavorful and delicious that it left me and the group I was eating with fighting for our share of the dish. The definite standout though from all of the dishes that night was the fresh tuna tartar. Oh boy was that good! With the great service, food, and atmosphere it saddens me that I don't live closer to this 5-star establishment!

This probably the best local sushi bar. So many delicious specialty rolls. Geisha roll with salmon and cilantro almost looks like a work of art. Just tried a roll with duck. It is an odd idea, but was very tasty with eel sauce. The fresh roll, nut roll and Florida roll are very good as well. The hot towels offered before and after the meal are a very nice touch. I have been coming here for a few years now. I would give 4 1/2 stars if I could: )

I just sat for dinner at Chiyo tonight. Service was great, that is where it ended. We ordered 2 rolls which looked nice and Udon noodle soup. within 5 minutes I was able to pull out over 5 bugs from the soup. I showed the waiter and let him know we were not going to pay for the food and leave and he insisted that we wait for the manager/ owner who came a few minutes later and said, "oh yea I see them, well we don't serve Udon a lot so we only buy the vegetables once a week and the bugs came from them so we are not responsible for that" WOW I couldn't believe that response and I had had enough. We walked out and went to Pepes instead.

I visited Chiyo tonight with my boyfriend after seeing recommendations on yelp and other sites. However, Chiyo was just average in my opinion. Service: Our server was friendly and prompt and refilled our drinks in a timely fashion. That's everything I need in a server. Atmosphere: This place is pretty cozy with about 6 or 7 tables and seats at the bar. (The parking lot is also tiny!) So far so good! The rolls: Were really just okay in my opinion. A bit too much rice, fish didn't taste totally fresh on some of them. I don't think they did a very good job at balancing flavors on the special items we tried. We got a sushi pizza, which was a tortilla with seaweed salad, tuna, spicy mayo, and parmesan cheese. The flavors weren't really balanced here at all. The nuttiness of the seaweed and the sharpness of the cheese totally overpowered the tuna. I've definitely seen the sushi pizza concept executed better elsewhere. The yellow dragon roll was also a cool idea but failed in execution. I don't think the mango was quite ripe, but I did really like how they topped the roll with thin slices of it. I couldn't really taste the fish very much as it was overpowered by mango. Similarly, with the Geisha roll, the toppings totally overwhelmed the fish, and there was not much of a cilantro flavor as promised, mostly just a tomato/onion taste. I did like that they had such a wide selection of raw and cooked rolls, but I don't think I'll be back to try more. I'll keep hunting for better sushi in Baltimore. (Yama Sushi in Hampden is my favorite so far!)

The basic cheap rolls suck but the key is to order the fancy ones. Anything above $12 and you should be okay. The ones that have spicy tuna are not that good because the ground tuna is kind of salty. The Leslie roll is spectacular and a must have!

This is an awesome little sushi place in the Mt. Washington area Baltimore. The Sushi bar was recommended by my co-workers for lunch. As I work around the corner my co-workers and I are there quite frequently. They have free parking which is pretty hard to find in this area of Baltimore. I typically eat in the dinning room but when pressed for time delivery is available for those on the John's Hopkins Conference Center Campus & take-out is available anytime. The rolls are delicious and the service is outstanding. It's just such a warm and welcoming place. They have excellent lunch selections which aren't very expensive and their tempura is pretty good but their specialty rolls are the best. I say treat yourself !

Came here last summer after reading a review in the Baltimore sun stating that the restaurant was superb. When we got there it was pretty quiet-- just one huge (30+ people celebrating a birthday). The server sat us and proceeded to ignore us for nearly an hour. Once the order was placed it took nearly an hour for our rolls to come out and we did not order any speciality rolls. The sushi rolls were good, but taking into account the wait -- wasn't worth it. We were almost ready to get up and leave when our rolls came out.

Not only had we heard this was the best sushi place in Baltimore, but it also had 4/5 stars on Yelp. How could we possibly go wrong? Oh, how wrong we went ... The place only had, at the most, six tables busy when we arrived. We hunkered down, and about 10 minutes later the hostess came to take our drinks order. By that point we were already ready to order food (much time to peruse the money) so placed that order at the same time. Shortly thereafter the drinks were dispatched. We had a couple of starters ordered. The first arrived about 15-20 minutes later. The second starter - edamame, no less - arrived a full 60 minutes after the original order, and only after a reminder to the hostess that we had indeed ordered what I believe to be a standard starter at sushi places and typically only takes a couple of minutes to be brought to the table. During this time one of the tables seated near us complained loudly that they had been waiting a full hour for their food. So apparently we weren't the only ones "forgotten". The hostess was gracious enough in apologizing for the delay with the food, but when you've got three kids at the table something like a free dessert may have turned this into a 2 star review. By the time we got the food we were basically asking for the check and heading out of there. No amount of apologizing makes up for such an enormously slow experience. To add bad to worse - the sushi tasted "fishy". Anyone who frequents good, fresh sushi places will know what I mean. Every now and again you'll encounter, in a lower grade place, something that tastes a lot more "fishy" than the fresh, smooth taste of grade A fish. The shrimp was rubbery, the eel tasted old, and the seaweed wrap on the rolls was too chewy. Add to that, our drinks ran out. We did, after all, have a lot of time on our hands to consume them. Not once we were proactively offered a refill on water glasses or if we'd like another beer. We had to positively force a second beer out of the hostess, which she then managed to forget (again) until reminded. A truly bad night for Chiyo. Maybe not the usual performance for this place, but I certainly won't be recommending it.

I do love a place that panders to us herbivores. Three words for you: Vegetarian. Specialty. Rolls. It's the dream and the myth of so many sushi restaurants. For a cuisine that might not traditionally be vegetarian, sushi is fairly veggie-friendly. However, while I may love avocado rolls, sometimes you want to indulge in those multi-layer, jewel-toned kaleidoscope-styled pieces. Besides, restaurants, those are the money makers. The first time we went our service wasn't great, but we liked the sushi we tried and wanted to go back and sample more of the menu. The specialty roll menu is a place mat sized laminated piece of paper printed on both sides - you might find favorites, but you won't run out of choices. Here's the results of our investigation so far: The "Ivy roll" is awesome, with crunchy apple and tiny sticks of carrot for texture and a sweet note. The "Red pepper roll", with tempura fried red pepper and avocado, also contrasts textures nicely, and delivered still-warm with the eel sauce, it's awesome. The "Crazy Crab" is a two-bite a piece roll, made excellent with the spicy mayo. Wish they had pots for the tea so that you can drink it without asking continually for refills. Another reviewer pointed out they use white miso, which I actually prefer, but if you have a preference for the yellow be aware. Parking isn't abysmal but if you park in their lot, be aware you're in for some shuffling.

Chiyo Sushi has the best sushi I've ever had and I've had tons of sushi from many places! The dining area downstairs where the sushi is made at the sushi bar is small but can be nice and quaint if it isn't busy. The upstairs is bigger and more spread out and comfortable. The service is great all of the workers are friendly. The parking isn't the best. The parking lot is very small and cramped but this place is worth that slight headache. I highly recommend the Queen Roll, Godzilla Roll and their Philadelphia Roll (but with fresh salmon not the kind it comes with automatically, you'd be hard pressed to find a better one). I also like the Pickled Radish Roll, I know that might not be everyone's style but if you're open minded give it a try. Chiyo has all the traditional sushi but they have numerous specialty rolls that are awesome and amazing. Order from the specialty menu and you can't go wrong. You will be hooked and want to return again and again as I have over the years with friends and family. Don't forget about dessert they have great fried ice cream.

I visited Chiyo Sushi with a group of friends, plus a baby, for the first time last night. I had heard great things and couldn't wait to check it out. Since I had read that the parking lot was tiny and a bit of an issue, we opted to park on the street. No problem. We walked into a crowded restaurant and my first thought was, "it's so small! Where are they going to seat us??" But we were promptly taken to an empty room upstairs, to our satisfaction (though it quickly filled up as our meal went on). All in all, our meal was delicious. I have no complaints about the food. The sushi was perfection, which is always a relief because bad sushi is just... bad. There was also an interesting selection of rolls which was great because I love trying new kinds of sushi. The service was very friendly, although a bit slow. However, it was a busy Thursday night, so that definitely played into it. If I had gotten my wine glass filled a bit quicker, I would've probably had a third. The slow service was definitely wearing on the baby a bit so there wasn't much time to hang out and socialize after our meal. I will definitely visit Chiyo again, though maybe without the little one. It's probably better for a date night than a family dinner. It's certainly a relaxed enough atmosphere but not the speediest of sushi spots. It still gets four stars for the excellent food and friendly staff.

Chiyo is better than Sushi Hana. It's better than many sushi bars in the B'more area. It is still, however, not outstanding sushi. The rolls are better than the nigirizushi, and the butterfly roll is a very pretty thing with salmon and avocado rolled in rice and topped with colorful stripes of flavored tobiko - red, orange, black, and green. Ankimo (monkfish liver) was presented well, but was mushy, not creamy. The miso soup was milder than I prefer, made with sweeter white miso rather than saltier yellow. It's really the classic nigiri that most obviously falls short. Again, it's the rice. Sushi rice should not be cold. Sushi rice should not be mushy. Sushi rice should not be bland. It should be about body-temp, sticky but firm, and slightly tangy from rice vinegar. The rice here was none of these, apart from sticky. At least it didn't taste like dishwater like some places I've endured. They do serve ama-ebi with the fried heads, which I consider an absolute must. Service was pretty good, they serve Sapporo Gold - which is a plus. The downstairs dining room near the bar was quiet and on the smaller side. Parking is a little odd in their small lot: cars park two deep, and if you park behind someone, expect to be asked in the middle of your meal to move your car to let another diner out. Avoid this by paying for parking on the street. I'd go again, if someone else wanted to, or if I were in the area and hankering for fish. I wouldn't, however, make a special trip. Which is a shame, because they really seem to try, and the rolls were really pretty good. If nigirizushi is not important to you, though, Chiyo could very well satisfy your craving.

We just tried Chiyo thanks to a Groupon. Nice little place overall. We went early, around 6:00. We didn't have a reservation, but that was okay. However, the place is small and it filled up quickly. We read about the various rolls, and that's what we came to try. The menu for the rolls is a bit overwhelming, with so many from which to choose. So we just had to order at random. After looking at the menu for a while, you realize it's pretty much variations on the same things. We got the Golden Roll, the Godzilla Roll, the roast duck roll, and another that was really good, but can't remember what it was called. Everything was very good, and the portions were quite large. We also ordered the seaweed salad, calamari salad (cold), and steamed monkfish liver. The seaweed salad was pretty standard, calamari salad was very good and refreshing, and the big surprise was the monkfish liver. Light and airy in texture, it was like a fishy pate. Very yummy. We washed it all down with a cold, unfiltered sake, which I really liked. The waitress was very nice, if a little uninformed, but no complaints about service. It probably wouldn't be my go-to place for sushi, but if you like a variety of rolls, Chiyo can't be beat.

This place has the best sushi I have ever had!! Every component used in making the rolls perfectly complements each other, right down to the fluffy white rice. I'm a huge sushi fiend and have eaten in restaurants all over Baltimore, and this place definitely beats out all other sushi restaurants. The rolls here are so delicious, and everyone who works here are all so welcoming and friendly. You haven't had sushi until you've eaten at Chiyo Sushi.
