So tonight I came in on the humble just for a little bite to eat after a long day.. First I was highly pleased with the attentiveness , service and safety for the customers including myself. The staff was sweet, and friendly. Omg my sushi was soo soo fresh and my side of white rice. As well the cleanliness of Aloha was perfect, I told them I'm mad this was my first visit. The prices are so cheap, good quality at a great price. I'm happy ! They will see me again

The staff is extremely nice & I enjoy the sushi and other food offered here. I've attended the karaoke night and enjoyed it even though the mic was hogged by one drunken individual. The crowd isn't a bad crowd and the location seems safe. Normally I'll see officers parked on Charles street when I leave. The drinks are worth it and the sushi tastes fresh & is well made.

Very delightful! I ordered the happy hour sushi at $3.95 for a 6-piece (there are certain types of sushi that you are allotted to with the special). I ordered the spicy tuna and the spicy crab rolls. The sushi is prepared fresh by the chef behind the bar area. The food is prepared and delivered in a timely fashion. The happy hour only allows you to dine in but I was offered to box up the rest of my food to take to go. The only not-so-good thing about this place is that they don't have wifi. But this is not apart of a restaurant chain so I understood that whole-heartedly. Hostess and waitress (same person) was very upbeat and friendly. I go to school and work down the street so I will definitely be back either during my lunch break or a break in between classes! Highly recommended.

Really had a taste for sushi even after cooking but not eating Sunday dinner. Went here for take out simply because it's close to home. Ordered the typical spicy tuna and spicy crab rolls and couldn't tell the difference between the two. Although they were flavorful/spicy and satisfied my sushi craving. I probably would return for another sushi craving for takeout. I've had better sushi though, even at Lexington market and I'm not a huge sushi eater.

Have come here for a couple of years for lunch and you can't beat the Bento Box selections for the price. Service always good, and food is decent. Always good selection with the Bento box and always full!

This is a nice spot for lunch if you are in the Mount Vernon area. I've come a couple of times now and have really enjoyed myself. I've come for lunch between 11 and 12 and they're usually only one or two other customers. The decor inside is also really nice with plenty of sunlight and tables. The lunch deals are great! They have bento box lunches that were amazing. They come with miso soup, tempura shrimp and veggies, steamed veggies, a dumpling, steamed, rice, California rolls and your choice of meat I recommend getting the bbq beef! It was tender and cooked perfectly with just enough sauce. I also tried some of their sushi and while they were on the smaller side, they were still fresh and tasty. The service here is excellent. The food came out quickly and our waitress was very attentive to our needs. She checked on us several times to see if we needed water or anything else. The only thing that bugs me is when Asian restaurants offer the cheap, disposable wooden chopsticks that give you splinters. I wish they would offer plastic or metal ones.

I go to Aloha if I'm alone and really want sushi and want to eat it in fifteen minutes. If you are by yourself they serve you really fast... The sushi is fine I like to order the yakisoba and split it with the table because the portion is huge and filling and it tastes good They used to give free miso soup and house salad but the past few times I've gone they stopped doing that and a couple times they did give it to us? So I'm not sure if it's an issue with the service or a change of policy My friends ordered the seafood lasagna, I think that's what it was called, and it was really gross. Hot mayonnaise and fish in lumpy tin foil... Blech
(3)Kim Y.
Do not order calamari. For $6, it's not hot, completely without flavor, and just sad. Also, it comes with a sad cocktail sauce (I think it's Heinz).
(3)Kathleen B.
The only thing you need to know about Aloha is this: Their bathroom, in the downstairs bar, is on.point. Imagine for a second that you are enjoying a long island iced tea. Then, imagine you are enjoying a second long island iced tea (and begin on a third only to realize, NOPE). THEN imagine you need to find a nice cool place to lie down as little palm trees, paddle boards and signs saying "bad decisions" swirl around in your head. No other place is better suited for that siesta than the bathroom at Aloha. I'm pretty sure if I were nice enough (or at least able to maintain steady eye contact), they would've handed me a sign to hang on the door saying "back in 5" (or 15 in my case). Let me end this review by being a bit serious for a moment: Do not drink long island iced teas. Also, do not forget to eat their sushi. it's bomb as hell.
(5)Ayo F.
Basic rolls are inexpensive and delicious. Always made to order and when you sit in the restaurant you get a complimentary bowl of miso soup with your meal. I usually just get sushi when I go here and it's much less than XS if you stick to the non specialty rolls. The restaurant and the bar downstairs both have really good happy hour specials. And on weekends the bar had karaoke which is super fun.
(5)Amanda W.
Aloha is definitely a mixed bag. On one hand, the lunch special bento box is a great deal. We always get teriyaki beef- the sauce is sweet and almost like a soy sauce texture and it comes with rice, miso soup, tempura, one gyoza, and four little california rolls. Lots of variety and everything tastes delicious. It's also only eight or nine dollars, but I can't remember right now- definitely less than ten. As a note- the bento boxes are just for lunch and only served on the weekdays. One time I tried to order it on Sunday and whoever picked up the phone acted like I was insane for trying to order a bento box on the weekend and then when I tried to order just the teriyaki beef, I was rebuffed again and told that the teriyaki beef wasn't what I was looking for. All in all, that was a confusing situation and I'll never try to order carryout on a weekend ever again. The sushi here is very mediocre. I've had their rolls and I've also tried their sake don a few times. Sometimes, the salmon is sliced so thin that I almost feel ripped off. But the sad part is that the quality is not the greatest (I've had instances where the fish is VERY sinewy and not soft and buttery) that I don't even wish the slices were thicker. Compared to the other places in the area, I would have to say that Aloha is better than XS but not as good as Minato. Then again, Aloha is a lot more affordable so you're really getting what you pay for. The ambiance is comfortable and the servers are always pleasant but don't expect them to be chatty.
(3)Bethany P.
Sushi here is pretty good - everyone is friendly. We have chosen not to go back since being double charged. We brought this up to management and they did not fix/look into the problem. We now go to Minato down the street.
(3)Laila M.
The food was amazing but our server had problems with communication. She brought out the wrong food twice and was very argumentative.
(3)Michelle M. C.
Sushi here is sad. I have been to several sushi bars and I can't say I enjoyed the food if even a bit. Ambiance is very nice. Customer service as well. Great location in the city. Just sad tasting sushi. Family members had low mein with chicken and chicken teriyaki and they didn't complain.
(2)Christopher h.
I thought the place was dirty and depressing. The sushi was not ideal, kinda dry. The server looked pissed off. I will not come here again.
(2)Sarah J.
I speak for the sushi dive bar downstairs. Love it! You can order sushi and other foods as well as try their various American and Asian drinks. They have Sapporo beer on tap and have cocktails like the Sake Sunrise and K-Town. Also, Wednesday nights are WING NIGHT, for 50 cents a wing. The bartender knows her regular customers by name and will make your night great. The bar itself was not too loud, unlike many others in baltimore. This is my new favorite bar.
(4)Irene y.
I would give 2 stars. Sushi is not the best and not too bad. Service is good, but I never heard that respectful Japanese restaurant charges for its green tea.
(2)Stephie Z.
A solid sushi spot. I got a sashimi plate and thought it was good. The slices of fish are slightly thinner than I'm used to which I didn't love. I would have preferred a thicker slice. The main stand out in the $100 of sushi rolls we got was the Maryland roll. It's served hot which is kind of weird, but in a good way. The inside of the roll is crabcake and the outside is topped with crab and a sweet/spicy sauce. Very delicious! I would get that roll again in a heartbeat. All the other rolls were just standard fare.

Not sure why I always seem to be late to review some of my go-to spots in Baltimore. Who knows. Anyway. I love this place. It's like going home to your mom's for comfort food, if your mom made really good sushi. We've been going to this place for probably about 5 years now since my wife and I had our unofficial first date here. We used to live less than a block away when we met, so we probably ate here a few times a month for the year we lived there. Even though we now live across the city, we still go back there for sushi. Sitting upstairs in the window and watching Baltimore go by just brings back good memories. The service is always quick and pleasant, and the place is rarely ever packed. The sushi is pretty awesome, reasonably priced, and you get soup for free (oh how I miss when they used to give you the ginger salad in addition to the soup). We just went this past weekend, and it's the first time we've went since they re-did the place and added the Chinese dishes. Haven't had a chance to try them since we only go for sushi. We have tried the korean dishes in the past though, and they were good. Some people may say this place is more of a 4, but I'm giving it a 5 since it's where I fell in love.
(5)Courtney W.
I'm a tough crowd when it comes to sushi, but I really love Aloha. It always tastes fresh and they have so many rolls to choose from. I love that they have a huge selection of "spicy" rolls. I recently got the spicy crab, spicy shrimp w/avo and the spicy red snapper crunch roll. All were delicious and fresh, but the red snapper had some weird pieces in it. They were like, chewy, just plain strange. I like for sushi to be easy to eat and almost melt in my mouth. That was the only issue, so I probably wouldn't get the red snapper here again. It's one of my favorites, but I don't know. It was just like eating a grissley cheesesteak. My husband had the orange chicken and it was SO GOOD! It was even pretty! I love when I get chinese and it's done right. The chicken is SUPPOSED to be crispy, and it was. He said he would have it again. He also really liked the fluffy brown rice. We'll be back! EDIT: I don't know what's up with this place... we were in again and were sitting for about 25 minutes being ignored. No one asked for our drinks, nothing. We left. I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt and order carry out sushi for dinner tonight. After a 9 hour day and 3 hours spent sitting in traffic round trip, I just want a good meal, fast. I repeated my order to three separate people over the phone. The last one could not get it right and was thoroughly confusing me. I said forget it and hung up. As someone who works in the food industry, if I requested that each client repeat their request 3 times, the company would be out of business. I just feel frustrated now.. and still hungry ):

This review is specifically for late night bar service. They were very rude to me and my friends. All of us felt like they did not want to serve us. Ignoring us at the bar even when they had no one to serve. They charged us a dollar more than the special board stated and when asked about it they stated that it was an automatic tip , we asked them why it was not represented on the board and they just walked away without talking to us, until later when they interrupted our conversation to tell us why there behavior was ok. Suffice it to say i will never be coming here again. I felt very unwanted and over charged.
(1)Brooke K.
The best tuna and avocado roll I have ever tasted! The quality is top notch and super fresh. I ordered take out but the restaurant is perfect for groups or a date night with cozy but modern decor.
(5)Janey R.
Kareoke night is when you want to go, and they have $1 sushi if you are interested, of course the $1 sushi has slimmer cuts of fish. Overall this is a great take-out place rather than sit in. Their food is good.
(3)Mitch S.
This is an "Okay" sushi joint, but leaves much to be missed. I went in for lunch on a weekday. This review only pertains to my carry out. I walked in to place a carryout order instead of calling it. I had to wait a minute while the sushi chef stared at me and the lone server (Place was EMPTY) sat in a chair texting. I asked for a menu to place a carry out order and was given the normal menu and placed my order a few minutes later. I then...stood. There really was no where good to stand out of the way, so I hovered near the sushi bar since no one was there. I eventually got my sushi and left. The server awkwardly helped a few walk ins during my wait. Sushi chef ignored me the entire time, not sure if he was in a bad mood or didn't speak English well or what. Service was definitely not the best. On to the sushi: Spicy Salmon roll, was decent if not a bit on the small size. Sushi wasn't the freshest I had, but definitely wasn't old. The salmon roll is hard to mess up, and this one was good, just had a bit more roe than I am used to. Flesh was decently firm. Solid B piece of sushi. The yellowtail roll was also along the same lines, except wasn't quite as firm flesh wise. While it wasn't old, it wasn't freshly cut just then. Overall, the place has okay sushi, about the same as you can get just about anywhere in the area. The 6 piece rolls are only $4.50 during the lunch hour and they also have happy hour. This place is worth a trip during lunch/happy hour, but I wouldn't be there for regular hours/prices.

I'm a sucker for good sushi & cheap drinks. Come through #AS for weekly drinks & specialty shots... Friday and Saturday enjoy the most eclectic karaoke ever. I recommend the LIIT (long island iced tea) an asparagus & volcano roll. The wings also tots me goats.... #JustCuriousLife poettaylor.com

I've only been here once during the happy hour. I think it was pretty good. I only had one roll and some nigiri. I have to say the $1 nigiri is awesome. Usually at sushi restaurants, nigiri for 2 is around 4-10 dollars depepending on what you get. The happy hour deals is what makes it worth coming in, in my opinion. I am definitely going to be coming back during happy hour times. Sushi wasn't amazing enough for me to want to come during non-happy hour times. The salad was not great but it could just be personal preference. The salad dressing was more on the salty side which I didn't like. But salad is just a minor detail, we all know sushi is more important. I would recommend anyone to come check this place out during the $1 sushi. The quality of the fish was good and the price is awesome.

best bipimbaps ever !! hot bowls , great service, cool bar and cat the bartender is awesome :) great fresh sushi
(5)Vuong T.
This place has changed so much, compared with what it was two years ago. The sushi is no longer tasty and is expensive. They didn't even do the sushi right. The rice was dry and salty, and the fish was stinky.
(1)Elizabeth J.
Great place to stop in for late night sushi. Serving until the wee hours, they don't have the best sushi, but they are quick, friendly and affordable. They have a good selection of sushi, sashimi and cooked dishes as well. I've come with large groups of friends several times and have always had great service.
(4)Laura B.
Wow, I've never been so sick. I couldn't eat solid food for two days after having sushi for dinner here last week. I eat sushi at nicer places frequently and stopped here only for the sake of convenience. To add insult to the injury, the waitress/owner is shockingly rude. If you're interested in anything resembling customer service, or just sushi that's edible, definitely go elsewhere! I should have known better: the place is attached to a liquor store. What does that tell you?
(1)Otis T.
While everybody breaks their pockets & wallets on fancy decorative sushi rolls, Aloha is definitely the place to be to get your moneys worth. I literally purchased at least 2 basic rolls, a specialty roll, & topped it off w/a bottle of Asahi...All under $40. Definitely got my moneys worth. And let's not forget the downstairs bar area where the happy hour and a couple of long islands can set you straight for the rest of the night.
(5)Ginny E.
Not the worst but not the best. I'm a sushi fanatic and they didn't have much in the way of original recipes. Average as hell.
(3)Remini B.
Just came from here && the sushi was okay. I ordered the bibimbap && I took one bite && I didn't like it. When I said something to the server && asked him if I could maybe get something else he said once you stir it up there's nothing we can do because we can't resell it. I'm like uhmm you shouldn't resale food to another customer after someone else sends it back anyways. Needless to say it was horrible customer service and I will not b returning!
(1)Sha T.
I so totally thought I wrote a review... I've been to Aloha on several different occasions and I'm never been disappointed. I've experienced this spot during a happy hour, on a date and during a friday night party (complete with DJ). The Bento box lunches are plentiful and worth your lunch time bucks. The happy hour menu has a little something for varying levels of sushi aficionados. What surprised me, were their spicy honey bbq wings. Delicious! I'll be back...
(3)Stacy M.
The super Maryland crab roll is absolutely Devine. It has a little kick to it, but so tasty and memorable.
(5)Dominique F.
I actually came here with my manager for lunch where we wanted to talk 'work' at the same time, and the place was perfect for that. Not crowded and quiet enough to have a decent discussion. She got the spring rolls and I got the dragon roll which was delicious. While the service was a bit on the slower side, the server was nice enough and kept checking on us most of the time. Will be back!
(4)Lauren S.
Sushi was very good. I loved the happy hour. Service was excellent. I highly recommend this place.
(4)Sanyla C.
One of Baltimore's best sushi place. Always fresh, super Maryland roll is to die for. Perfect combination of spice and crab.
(5)Dan A.
Although Aloha Sushi looks a little run down from the outside, it's surprisingly quite nice and inviting on the inside. My friend and I were seated at one of the small tables next to the window. If you just need a table for two, do try and get one of those tables; it was really nice. We came in for happy hour which was great because it turns out they have $1 sushi pieces. This wasn't like last week's rotting fish either. Each sushi piece was fairly large with good slices of fresh fish; it was vibrantly colored, not dull like old, bad quality fish. I had the salmon, yellow tail tuna, and red snapper. All great. While the $1 pieces add up as you get more pieces, it still is a very good value considering that quality was on par with some of the more expensive places I've been to. My friend ordered a spicy crunch roll (if i remember correctly) and also ordered udon. The roll was not too bad. It came out beautifully presented as well. My friend loved the udon as well. She especially liked the fact that they gave you little seasoning flake things to add to the soup if you'd like. She said she haven't seen it much in this area, although it is a fairly common thing in the L.A. area where she is originally from. Service was great as well. Aloha is a very good sushi place, especially considering the Station North area doesn't have too many choices. I'd recommend... and plan on coming back too :)

I used to pass this place. A lot. Laughed because it was named Aloha Sushi and it wasn't in Hawaii. That for me was a deal breaker from the jump. But I walked in and... Cool place. Nice atmosphere. Cool chicks tending bar. Decent specials. The sushi is yummers. We ordered the red snapper nigiri sushi roll and spicy tuna and both were great. Also got the miso soup. And on separate occasions tried the calamari, chicken and fries. I know and love sushi and for them to be named "Aloha Sushi" and not be in Hawaii, well, to say the least, I was skeptical (as aforementioned). But I have been there several times now, nothing but good vibes, decent specials, yummy food and cool people. I like it. I'll go back. Don't pass it like I did. Check it out. You might be surprised by it's unassuming nature and laid back atmosphere. In a good way, of course :)
(3)Emily W.
This review is only based off of the downstairs bar-- just drinks, no food. That being said, Aloha quickly became my after class, let's grab a quick drink spot. The atmosphere is super laid back, and the bartenders are friendly and attentive. They've got decent drink specials, and overall are priced reasonable. They play great music too- we were jamming in our seats! Great low-key place to grab a drink and unwind.
(5)I Wen W.
I really enjoyed the maki during the happy hour. Always get enough fish in the roll :) The yellowtail and salmon roll are great, I always order them when I get there. I just don't like the salty ginger they provide for sushi, it supposed to be a bit sweeter. I remembered I mentioned about this to the staff but they were rude to me.
(2)Christina H.
My boyfriend and I found out about Aloha Sushi through restaurant.com last summer and decided to try it out. The certificate was good for $25 off of a $40 tab, excluding alcohol and gratuity. Aloha Sushi is in the Mount Vernon area and there isn't much to the building or the decor, but the service was great. Our waitress seated us by the window and we ordered a massive amount of sushi. It all came out on a huge plate and we couldn't even finish it all. Using the certificate, our bill came to $30 and we added a generous tip on top of that because the food and service was so good. Unfortunately, Aloha Sushi is no longer participating in the coupons with restaurant.com , but it is still a great place to eat. There are a lot of sushi places to eat in Baltimore and I can't say that this is the best, but it's pretty good.
(4)Lauren S.
We came here a while ago on a Friday evening. The place wasn't crowded, but that has never been an issue with me. Sure, some people say if it's not crowded, the food sucks. That's not always the case, but here it is. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and some non descript rolls. The chicken tasted rubbery and I couldn't really swallow any of it. My boyfriend enjoyed his sushi enough, but it wasn't enough to make us want to come back.
(2)George M.
We decided on this restaurant due to their menu listed on yelp. My main goal was the spam musabi. We were seated quickly despite being 5:30 PM on a Friday. Only 3 tables were occupied and the staff seemed mainly focused on the television and conversing. We were asked what we would like, if anything in addition to water, both ordered hot green tea, and never received the previously offered water. I asked about the spam musabi not being on the menu and was given an excuse that it must have been an old listing that "someone" should update. When I pointed out that was the main reason we chose the location it was met with indifference. Moving on, we ordered an octopus salad and a seaweed salad. Wife reports the octopus was good, I was never given my seaweed salad. We ordered several rolls and tamago. The tamago had a very dense fishy taste like it was made days ago and stored with seafood. The rolls were okay, but nothing special. Honestly I have had comparable at Wegman's, which is good for Wegman's, but not so great for a sushi bar. Our search for a great sushi place in Baltimore continues.
(2)Virginia Y.
finally tried the sushi here! they currently have a special, $3.50 for all special rolls. I think it's their 25th or 50th anniversary? Food was served quick and our server was attentive. The sushi isn't bad, it tasted pretty fresh and it's alot better than going to XS across the street where you have to wait a decade for your one roll.. Me likes this place.
(4)Ben B.
I'll just make this review an anecdote. Me and my friend got 8 pieces of nigiri and four tasty rolls (shrimp+avocado, avocado, fried tuna, yellowtail). We ate so much fish our stomachs started swimming. The bill was $20. My review: Full belly, full wallet.
(4)Frank S.
If you like eating sushi jerky while contemplating food-born illness, this place is for you. I bought red snapper, flounder, sweet shrimp, eel, salmon roe and a couple rolls. The red snapper and flounder were so dry they had a matte finish and matched the consistency of stringy plaster. The sweet shrimp were beginning to fall apart from age. The eel was eel, hard to mess up something cooked. The salmon roe were shriveling into roe-raisins. I was never offered a drink refill. I'd think that dropping $50 on lunch would mean I wouldn't have to beg for a second glass of non-iced, non-filtered tap water. Don't try the iced tea either, it's over-sweetened fountain style. Tastes like lemon-flavored sugar chemicals.
(1)Nicholas D.
This sushi bar used to be one of my favorites because it had an amazing $1 Nigiri special at all hours of the day. Each piece was $1, and your meal came with soup and salad. You could fill up for a ridiculously low price on nice cuts of fish and I loved it. They got rid of this deal early in 2012, though, so I don't go anymore. I was just there yesterday, though, and while I paid a lot more for my Nigiri than I used to, it still was good. The rolls here aren't my favorite, but the Nigiri is! The restaurant itself is clean and the people are nice. There is a nice manager/waitress who seems to always be there. She tells me I should be a model. I like that. One thing that is strange, however, is the place always smells like cleaning products, and not in a good way.
(3)Jamz S.
My girlfriend and I are starting on a "healthier" diet which should include 3 servings of fish per week. As such, having recently moved to the neighborhood, we thought we should make our rounds with the local sushi establishments in order to figure out which is best for us. This night we ordered the spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll and the philly roll, along with the spring roll festival. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon were very good. They give you ample food to leave you satisfied and the ingredients were mostly fresh. The fish itself was a little on the fishy side, leading me to believe it was not the freshest it could be. The philly roll however, was good, but was overpowered by a huge scoop of philadelphia cream cheese in each bite. Spring rolls were also underwhelming, each with a good amount of crab in it. This place is OK and has decent sushi, however for what you are getting the prices could be a bit lower.

Got really sick here,....again. Not going back.

Leave this place alone. Waaaaaay understaffed. Luckily, Chipotle is across the street when you get hungry. I waited for 15 mins and was seated, but never served.

My fiancé, her father, and I recently dined at Aloha. Our experience that evening could have resulted in a 1-2 star rating, but our waitress saved the day. The food was great, as was the atmosphere. What happened, though, was quite strange and like nothing that I have encountered before at a dining establishment. We placed our order (and given that you actually put a check beside the items you want, it should be easy to get it right). However, when our food came, it wasn't what we ordered. We told the server (who was a different person than the waitress) that it wasn't what we ordered. She went away, came back with what appeared to be our order in her hand, and said that it was, in fact, what we ordered and she named off the various rolls. She did not speak much English - so there was something of a language barrier. We just assumed that we had somehow marked the wrong items (maybe one above or below) and decided to eat what was brought. Around the time we were finishing up, the waitress came to our table and told us that the order that was brought to us was not what we ordered and was, in fact, for another table. Oops. She brought our order to us, but told us that the server (who I assume was also the manager or maybe the owner) wanted us to pay for both. We objected and the server told the waitress to remove our correct order from the table. Not good. We explained to the waitress what happened, and she agreed that we should not have to pay for the wrong order and that we should receive our order as well. Although the server (the one who insisted our wrong order was right) never returned to fill our water or tea (as she did so copiously prior to the order mix-up), the waitress handled the situation very well - and we left satisfied (and quite full, I should add). So - sushi is great, atmosphere is great, just make sure they bring to your table what you ordered - and if you doubt that it is right, be insistent.

I happened upon this hidden treasure during a horrendous snow storm/ blizzard we had in 2010. It was the weekend I moved into my current location. The snow was so bad that I moved into my spot the DAY before it began snowing (this is after I moved my moving day up after all the warnings that it was gonna be bad one) and I was not able to move my car for 10 days (trees fell, 6 ft. snow drifts, I couldn't even open my back door - I couldn't see out the door due to the snow). Businesses were closed and basically, MD, DC and VA shut down due to this storm. That said, after I began unpacking, I was slowly getting cabin fever (CALGON, TAKE ME AWAAAAY!!!). I HAD TO get out of the house. I threw on my boots, scarf, hat & parka and headed outside. All public transportation was 'limited' due to the weather so I walked downtown. After getting my sanity back and taking in the nice crisp winter air I decided I would walk back to my place (a very long walk - especially in 4-6 ft. of snow) - but hey, what else do I have to do ... so I began my walk ... which I realized was a COMPLETE ascension. The entire walk was on a steady incline (OMG! ARE YOU SEIOUS w/ this mess?!?!? DAYUM!!!) As I get closer to my 'hood, I notice that the spot that I used to frequent (Henry & Jeff's, which closed down eons ago), sprouted a new moniker. It was now a place called 'Aloha Sushi'. The name, I wasn't a fan of - It just sounded WAY TOO cheesy. I mean - how is a Hawaiian Japanese fusion sounding restaurant w/ neon lighting even going to be CLOSE to palatable? I was however, hot, tired and sweaty from this walk. AND ... it was the ONLY place open during this crappy weather. I figured I could go in and cool down and get some water or tea ... then begin my trek again. I step inside and my trepidation is quickly quelled. There are two areas. 1) a main dining room upstairs and 2) a bar / karaoke room, downstairs. I head upstairs and was quickly greeted and shown a seat. I look over a sizable menu w/ many options and after skimming and asking appropriate questions, I settle on some seaweed salad, couple normal sushi rolls and something that sounded interesting to me - 'Seafood Sushi Lasagna'.... Say whaaaaaaaat?!?!? Oh yeah, I'mma try me some-o-this! While waiting, I' am brought some tea, a small house salad w/ this AMAZING ginger dressing - OMG! I wish I could bottle that stuff!), and a cup of scrumptious MISO soup. PAY DIRT!! I am one happy camper right now... Oh - did I mention - that was all FREE!!! Yep - u read right! Soup, salad and green tea - all FREE!!! DOPENESS!!! Out comes my meal and my experience only got better from there. The sushi rolls were awesome and this 'seafood sushi lasagna' (I chose the salmon version) was ... in a word ... AMAZING!!!!!!!!! I think a tear actually ran down my cheek ... (I tend to do that when food is above par). Essentially, it's a standard sushi roll (either salmon, tuna, shrimp or scallop) and that is bottom layer. Then they put this orange creamy sauce on top, drizzled w/ a little bit of roe. Then a layer of your selected fish, cubed and spread on top. A little more sauce then it's thrown in the broiler for a minute and served to you. (you can get the sriracha sauce on top as well. I'm personally not a fan of all that fire messing up my taste experience but hey, you might be so GO FOR IT!!!). This oowey gooey savory treat is the REASON I was MEANT to stop in this spot. To this day, when I go there. I ALWAYS get the 'lasagna' and whatever else. So, if you enjoy messy, sloppy food (aye, I'm a NY'er - I love messy food) and enjoy sushi - this is a MUST DO!! Needles to say, my walk back through the rest of the snow was a cake-walk now that my gullet was full and my behind was feelin nice off the sake ... UPDATE: I stopped by 'Aloha Sushi' last week and had my regular ... BUT they no longer have the free green tea, salad and miso. They were losing money and with this CRAZY economy, had to charge for it ... but at $1 a pop, it's still a great deal! Trust me - that miso & that salad dressing is NO JOKE!! I don't know why, but they also go by the name 'Aloha Tokyo'. Confusing but true. Just a lil FYI for you ...

As a Japanese person, my sushi standard is super high. But since I live in bmore, my sushi expectation is super low. With that being said, Aloha is one of my favorite sushi joint. Why? Because it's cheap, and they give you salad and soup with sushi order, and it's never too crowded. Dollar sushi is the best deal in town, and the quality is actually better than some of other more expensive sushi joints. I've always avoided this place because of the name, and liquor store attached to it, but I am so glad I decided to try their dollar sushi one day. They are doing the dollar sushi as anniversary deal, so I don't know how long it will last but I hope they will keep it for a while....

I came to aloha on Labor Day when it was pouring outside with a friend. The waitress gave us shitty seats, so I asked if I could sit at a different spot because there were only two other parties. She refused and said the place was gonna be busy that night. Not a single person came to eat after we were seated. I ordered the plain udon, the smoked salmon nigiri, and the spicy tuna roll. The udon was too salty and the sushi didn't taste very fresh and were not rolled up nicely. However, its an alright place to eat if you're hungry.

Good food! Cheap prices! What more can you ask for? Ordered the rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, California spring roll, the calamari appetizer, and cheesecake for dessert. The sushi was good quality, and the fish was very fresh. You can see that these people actually know how to make sushi, and they're not just some random dudes mixing rice and fish. There is a good hunk of fish in/on each piece of sushi in the rolls, so don't worry about them skimping out on the fish and bombarding you with rice rice and rice. The calamari appetizer and the cheesecake were just okay, so don't bother ordering these unless you're really craving them. But definitely, do go for the rolls! During happy hour, they have $1 sushi (nigiri I believe). Didn't try any of the nigiri sushi, but judging from the quality of the rolls, I'm sure it's good! Keep in mind that this is no 5 star Japanese restaurant. You will get good sushi, but it won't be top-of-the-line stuff. Sushi snobs love to degrade places that don't serve the highest quality everything, but seriously, not many of us can drop $25 on one specialty roll. For the prices, this place has outstanding food. And anyways, none of the sushi places around this area sell genuine sushi like it was meant to be served in Japan. So, suck it sushi snobs! One note: There was a slight smell of chlorine or some other cleaning chemical in the air, but it's seriously not as bad as some of these other Yelpers are making it out to be.

Aloha's one of the things I really miss about Baltimore City! Attentive, friendly, quick service, cute atmosphere, fresh sushi and selections that are both traditional and contemporary. They've got ridiculously great lunch specials in the bar area and sometimes have karaoke. I can't wait to visit again!
(3)Vickie S.
3.5 stars. Sushi is top notch. Specials are excellent deals. The service is okay at best and the atmosphere is pleasant but super casual in a way that is unusual for the area. Not a place for a first date. Try the tamago or the unagi.

I have read all the reviews about ALOHA sushi. Especially the VERY LONG one with a VERY poor review. I think that person should visit again...I also noticed that the person who wrote that review is no longer on yelp... The truth about ALOHA sushi... I have been coming here since 2009..referred by a friend and I have since stopped going to my old sushi spots. This family business is great! Yes they do struggle to staff this place at times...what resturant doesn't. I have worked in large restaurants and servers are their today, gone tomorrow... but the customer service is awesome. Everyone who is a regular fell in love with this place and each of us has brought many people into the fold. I continue to come here not only because of the staff but the sushi is great. Not that hybrid stuff to help the masses fall in love with sushi but good rolls...good sashimi... just plan good sushi. I do prefer the bar instead of the upstairs restaurant but I eat at both on a regular basis. I'm not a casual sushi eater either. I want everything RAW, but aloha caters to beginners all the way to seasoned sushi eaters. ... And bartenders/servers like Mingie are the icing on top. Both the bar and restaurant cater to a VERY diverse crowd. You can arrange to have small get togethers in the bar as well. The happy hour is good and the location is great if u want to continue to other locations after u eat like Fells or Fed Hill... The bar is jumping Thurs-Sat and enough tv's to enjoy the game on Sun... Ok that is all! Try them out...

Pretty disappointing. Philly Spring Roll was good, and fresh, but the Misses did not like the taste. Miso soup was solid. Seaweed salad was good, but had a bunch of fake crab on it. No thanks. But the sushi and the rolls were just very, very ordinary and not especially fresh. Sweet Mushroom roll was ok, not terribly flavorful, but the eel sashimi was not tasty at all, the squid was fishy and crunchy, and the yellowtail was very "meh", to quote Yelp's rating system. We went here to try it, but will be going back to our standard Minato when we want sushi in the neighborhood.
(2)Sarah B.
YES YES YES. This is the sushi place I've been waiting for. There are some other good places in Baltimore, for sure. But this one really is taking the cake, for me, my friends. Came here last weekend for a little date night. Walked right in and got a seat by the window. Lovely place to people watch the Mount Vernon crowd. Ordered some wine and a tizer and some delicious sushi. We always go overboard and order way too much, Oops, we did it again. But it was SO SO fresh and good. The service was attentive without being invasive and the check was totally reasonable. YAY for finding a new go-to sushi spot!
(5)Tracie U.
It's exactly 3 stars, because it's OK. We ordered edamame, which was over salted, but the bf didn't mind. Spicy tuna, cali roll (because we miss Cali), and one of the daily special rolls with "crab". We thought it was going to at least be real crab since it's Maryland and all. Nope. It was kani, the imitation crab. We probably would have ordered the salmon special roll instead, since there's kani in the cali already. Bill was $25, we tip $5 because our waiter was good. $30, totally not worth it for dine-in. Maybe on the rare occasion that I run out of rice and need my fix I'll order for carry-out. There's nothing wrong, it was just simple.
(3)Pete J.
A OK. Thats good right? I'd like to wish that is good but in the world of yelp 3/5 stars looks bad. right? I think Aloha sushi is good. its ok. Its nothing special. I ordered the miso soup, the spicy tuna roll and the California roll. This may make me seem like a sushi amateur but I wanted something that was hard to fuck up. AND YA KNOW WHAT? they didnt fuck it up. its was ok. the price was on average and that was about it. I'd like to note that some of the previous posts were below average because the critic decided to judge the restaurant solely about the people sitting in front of the restaurant, the liquor store attached, or the smell from the restaurant. I understand that the ambiance should play a part in the overall experience but it is no reason to give it 1 star and not try the food. therefore I will add an extra star, for 4 stars in order to offset these dumbass posters. YES.

Yeah, so very quickly I'd like to address some of the other reviews here first; price should NEVER be the governing factor in sushi selection. You're eating raw fish...freshness is really the main goal...all else is secondary. That said, I'll never be back to Aloha sushi. I'd like to tell you about the food....but I can't...we didn't even make it that far. All it took was the chokingly-strong chemical cleaner scent at the door to send us right back out. Not to mention it was 945 on a Friday and the place was deserted. No thanks. I'd prefer to eat my sushi without a pine-sol chaser. But thanks anyway. Additionally, with Minato just two blocks away...there's really no reason to settle for this place.
(1)Samuel E.
Great food for the price. Sushi is so good and they have awesome rolls that I have not even seen before. Wings are great too. i go to the bar also on weekends because they play great music and the bartenders rock!
(5)Jerome J.
Aloha sushi is the best. The atmosphere is always on point. If you want a quieter setting for a family or a date, the upstairs has a nice ambience. If you are looking for a fun night drinking, while enjoying the food from the bar menu, the basement level is your spot. There are always food and drink specials to get the most bang for your buck. All in all, this place has friendly and attentive bartenders, a diverse and attractive customer base, and how could we forget, talented singers during karaoke night Fridays and Saturdays. Whenever I am in the Mount Vernon area, I try to make it my business to stop in at this gem.

Went there on New Years Day and wasn't expecting much, just glad to find a place open for the evening. I didn't feel like eating sushi and was happy to see they had Bibimbap on their menu, and boy was it the best Bibimbap I've ever had! The bowl was so huge and filled with all Korean Vegetable goodness topped with a sunny side up egg. The rice and sauce came in two seperate bowls. The lady set them all on the table and asked "You know how to eat Bibimbap?" I did, but she had the most inviting smile, so I let her explain anyway. "You put rice and sauce in and mix everything together" And that's exactly what I did! It took every ounce of decency in me to not bury my face in this big bowl of delight. My friend got a couple of sushi rolls (Yellowtail and a Shrimp special they had) Both were really tasty. The place has such a homey feel to it, very friendly service and prices can't be beat!
(5)elizabeth k.
This is the BEST sushi place in Baltimore! I love sushi and visit aloha at least twice a week. I decided to to try some other places (4 other places) and they didnt even stand close to Aloha! The food is great and the service is even better. I have suggested Aloha to friends and family ..they equally love it!
(5)Maki S.
I LOVE the location, I love that you can sit by a window and gaze down to the streets as you dine, I love how cheap eating there is. The miso soup is SOOOO GOOOOOD!!! It's served as an appetizer. My taste in sushi is simple (salmon roll and dragon roll are my favourites), so their menu is good for me. The quality of fish is good for the price. The employees are fairly quiet and friendly and they won't interrupt you unless it's to bring you your food or check, and that's how I like it. They play modern music, ( Jason Mraz- I'm Yours was on today) which I found enjoyable. --- If you want something a little classier, don't come here. If you want something tasty and incomplex, then by all means go to this place.

I think I enjoy the little 'perks' of dining there than eating the actual meal. The perks were the complimentary salad and miso soup whenever I order sushi, the $1 sushi special which allows me to get my craving for seaweed salad when I don't want to eat too much of it, and all the sides that come with their meal special (salad, soup, edamame, tofu, steamed vegetables). The place is never packed and service is pretty fast, so the dining experience is pretty decent. The food there is meh. I've had a number of their sushi rolls, and it is just ok. Then I had their vegetable tempura, and it was pretty heavy to eat (and I got like 20 pieces of tempura, which actually made me nauseous afterwards). Another time I've had the shrimp teriyaki, and the shrimps was mediocre. I haven't come by a dish or roll that I can rave about. If you want fast and nice service and don't mind average Japanese food, then this is the place to go.
(3)Andrew W.
While I cannot endorse the enthusiastic "best sushi in Baltimore" chorus, I do think Aloha deserves a try. The sushi is of consistent quality and is easily the most affordable in the area. You will find the service friendly, but no-frills. A free miso soup and tiny, just OK salad, help prime the canvas for a decent sushi experience. Be aware that there is no decor to speak of. It's simple, diner-style tables, a distinct affection of kitsch, and lacking in the typical cutesy Japanese trinkets. You may also detect the odor of cleaning products. It's an unusual observation, but an honest one. Give Aloha a try. Some will like it, some won't, and a few, it seems, love it. I fall somewhere in between.

This was a good night alot of food and laughter all around. We went down to Aloha Sushi for lunch before hitting Artscape. This place is great and has great location in the Mt. Vernon area. I bought multiple trays of sushi and ending up filling up on great sushi and good drinks. I had the spicy tuna roll and spicy crab roll and a few others. They were all good and after my first three rolls I ordered a fourth and fifth roll. The food here is great and a great hang out spot for anytime. Pros: Great Food Great Location Two Levels Cons: Pricy ( I spent 60 bucks on sushi alone) I would definitely go here again. I like the location and how things are laid out and the sushi is killer. But next time I am getting the Korean BBQ.
(4)Curtis W.
I love this place for the food, atmosphere, and friendly service. Prices are good without being too high and the specials are amazing. Dollar sushi I'm always a fan of! Also there is a downstairs bar with the friendliest bartenders that makes for a fun place to hang after work or with friends. Also the wings are amazing, the drinks are strong, and it has a liquor store connected to it which is the only one open on Sundays. Gotta love it!
(4)Joan D.
This place is easily the best sushi in Baltimore, and it is so cheap! The service is great, we got free miso soup and salad with our sushi order (what a nice surprise!) and the fish is so fresh and delicious every time, I don't even want to try going to any other sushi places in Baltimore anymore! First of all, I find that when restaurants get a little too creative/trendy with their rolls, sometimes the actual quality lacks. With Aloha sushi, everything is more or less traditional, no crazy trendy rolls here that go by names like Godzirra, instead they focus more on the quality of each roll here than the trend appeal. (They still do have about 20 different kinds of fancy rolls here though). The best part about this place, is the AMOUNT of fish in each roll, Oh my god it is such a delight to have such huge chunks of fresh fish in my sushi! Their other dishes are crazy good too, my husband got the udon noodle seafood dish and there was a ton of different delights of the sea in it (muscles, fish, octopus, shrimp, crab) and it was presented beautifully and everything tasted like a dream.
(5)Bobby M.
I love this place for both the sushi and the atmosphere. The sushi was fresh, and I particularly liked some of their shrimp tempura special rolls along with their spicy tuna roll. I have mostly been there on Friday nights, and the bar turns into a fun karaoke atmosphere with fun and attentive bartenders. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for great sushi or an entertaining place to go out.

(7/3/2014) UPDATE: Service improved if place is not very full. Cheap and rockin' lunch specials for $8. Got a nice little bento box; bulgogi (marinated, grilled, Korean beef -- savory-sweet, chewy) cooked entree. The boxes come with 4 pieces of California roll, steamed mixed vegetables, shrimp (1) and vegetable tempura (2 green beans, 1 broccoli floret, 1 onion ring), 1 gyoza, ice cream scoop of rice and miso soup. Had a few nigiri, sushi is OK fresh, not the best ever, would have raw fish somewhere else. Cheap, different, relatively quick lunch specials in Mt. Vernon.

I've been a chef for 18 years and consider myself a food fan. I've cooked all over Europe and been lots of places. But at no point did I find any better or fresher sushi.., ever... It's a must...
(5)Drew D.
Perfectly serviceable sushi.
(3)Sapna K.
I've been here twice with the family after shows at the lyric opera house. The sushi is fresh, fast, the service is friendly-- what more can you ask for? We do simple sushi, sashimi and tuna/salmon rolls, so you can say we're sushi purists, so I can't comment on the "special rolls". The japanese udon is amazing. Does the job!
(5)Kate P.
I didn't love Aloha Sushi. Went there once and will not be back. Atmosphere was not great - the restaurant was cold and our table wasn't very clean. The sushi was not wonderful. There wasn't much creative on the menu. The "crispy" sushi just had tempura flakes sprinkled over it (was kind of gross) and the rest of it was really mediocre. The service was good and other people in there seemed happy.

Of the various sushi places in the Station North/Mt. Vernon area that are in walking distance, this has become my favorite. I like the unpretentious, homespun atmosphere: nothing fancy, a pleasant mom and pop feel pervades, and the service is always friendly and efficient. The tuna has always been fresh, and free of sinew, and I like their miso. Though this may not be award winning, the prices, portions and freshness make this an excellent value. Some have groused about the take-out liquor store that they have opened below the restaurant, but I find this a plus, as they stock Asahi in large cans, and have an excellent sake selection, and stay open late on weekends. If there's a few panhandlers about, this is Baltimore, and I've hardly noticed or been bothered; that's life in the big city. Is this a fancy wine and spirits shop? No. But it provides a useful service: one of the better take-out selections available at that hour, and in a clean, friendly setting. I am impressed by their entrepreneurial verve, and the good sense they had in expanding their use of their liquor license; it provides a useful service to the late-night set of variously artsy bohemians and tipplers that people the area.

Good Sushi, decent prices, good service. My friend and I gave this place a visit and walked away quite satisfied. We started off with the Kyoza (Japanese pot-stickers, which you can get steamed or fried. We went with the fried) which were pretty tasty, but only came with 4 for $5.50. Or sushi orders came with a bowl of miso soup (never have been a fan, personally) and a bowl of salad with a ginger dressing (not as sweet as others I've had, but still very good). On to the sushi, we ordered a Spicy Crab roll, a Spicy Tuna roll, a California Roll, and a Shrimp Tempura roll (all 6 piece). I can safely say I was very satisfied with each roll, all of them tasted great and looked great (this was my first time having Shrimp Tempura, and I was very impressed.) Overall I was very happy with the meal. Prices aren't cheap, but they aren't expensive, pretty standard fare here, $5.50 for a 6 piece roll, so no complaints here. The wait staff was great, and checked up on our table multiple times (without being super annoying about it). I won't say this is the best sushi I've had, but it was definitely very good. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.
(4)Jen N.
Although it says they deliver on here, they don't. I've gotten sushi here and it was really cheap during happy hour. I have no complaints.

My second stop on a Baltimore Sushi Tour. Unlike the other sushi bars, I had never experienced Aloha previously. Aloha is both sushi bar and hibachi - one next to the other, separate doors. First, a daily special of $1 pieces of sushi or nigiri makes Aloha affordable, but is it worth it? YES! At this point, our group had expanded to 8 people. We decided to choose 5 varieties of nigiri with 8 pieces of each. Smoked salmon, red snapper, white tuna, squid and spicy scallop. Service was excellent and food was well presented. Kindly, the pieces were split between the table - four pieces of each nigiri per plate, each for one half of the table, making sharing easy for all. Also, miso and salad were complimentary. Spicy scallop was awesome. Red snapper not as great as XS, but still tasty. Squid was chewy, though I've never met a squid that I liked (unless its breaded and fried as calamari). Smoked salmon and white tuna were tasty as well. I was quite impressed by Aloha. The restaurant itself isn't the as fancy as the other sushi bars in Mt. Vernon, but for what it lacks in extravagant decor, it compensates with tasty sushi at very reasonable prices.

A friend & I came here for happy hour on a Wednesday evening & not knowing what to expect because it was both our 1st time visiting Aloha. We walked down the stairs and the ambience did not have it's typical sushi bar. It was dark and loud music. However, I did enjoy the music, but I like to chit chat and if they had lowered the music down & turned the light up I would have given it a 5 star. Also, we sat in the seating area and we had to order our food and drinks at the bar so we decided to sit at the bar. It wasn't busy at all so that was strange to why he never took our order at our seats. I had $1 sushi Hamachi Kama (yummy & not fishy at all), $1 Unagi (Eel) (perfect taste), & 4.95 salmon skin roll (too fishy :/) it was suppose to come in 6 rolls, but the chef cheated me with one less. I didn't complain about it because I was not a fan of the salmon skin roll. Well drinks was $3 and that totally topped it off and the male bartender (never got his name), but was cute and friendly. We didn't ask for much, but when we did he was attentive and responded speedy. We wanted to order one last round and missed the happy hour by 5 minutes and he still gave us the happy hour price. With that being said, good sushi, good drinks, & cool attentive bartender, I will return. Oh my friend is not a sushi eater and had honey mustard wings and said that it was okay, but we didn't expect it to be great since the restaurant is known for sushi. My only request is to turn the music down a bit and turn the light up a bit during happy hour :)
(3)Lauren N.
Aloha Sushi is great for quick and cheap sushi! They always have a specials board with discounted rolls for $3-$4. They are fantastic for to go orders. Do not expect anything fancy or over the top, but for normal every day sushi...this is perfect!
(3)Alyssa G.
Aloha is hands down my favorite sushi spot in Baltimore. The service is amazing and the food is spectacular. The sushi is always fresh and delicious and they deliver amazing value at a very reasonable price. Aloha is a bit tucked away but definitely worth the trip to Mt. Vernon. Don't miss their downstairs bar for some delicious cocktails after your meal.
(5)Ariel E.
I had lunch here. The dollar sushi menu is good - basic. I ordered the yellow tail sushi, the yellowtail was fresh, but a on the dry side. We ordered a salmon avocado roll - great. The hawaiian roll was AWFUL! The tuna on top was dry, and it was crab salad inside with tons of mayo. It is not say in the menu that it was a crab salad and we were not expecting the mayo. They forgot to put the aspargus in the roll. We asked and the waitress brought out 2 pieces on a separate plate. I am not sure what that was supposed to solve. We couldnt eat the roll. We also ordered the scallop bento. I have never had scallops that I could not finish. The scallops were fried! It did not say that in the menu! Also, they were chewy and fishy. We got 6 and each could only stomach 1. I would not go here again, there are much better places. The service was good, and the staff friendly. The tuna and yellowtail were dry and the scallops were not edible.

There are a lot of sushi restaurants in Baltimore, so I feel like you have to do more than just show up. Aloha sushi doesn't stand out to me. The fish quality is okay. Nothing is bad, there is just nothing specials. No special rolls. The decor is an old row house meets eclectic modern. It's nice, but not enough to be the reason I go. The prices are cheap for sushi, but fresh fish can only be so cheap. Even the fact they serve Korean food is not special (so does Geisha). I would say, if you have a coupon or deal, grab dinner, if not save your money for a good dinner.
(2)Johnny C.
It doesn't look that great from the outside, but once you go in and upstairs, it's nice and quiet. But soon again starts another big riot flavorful fresh raw fish. The sushi here is just big. (note: I've discovered they don't always give those huge cuts of sushi, but still are pretty much always above average in size). The fish here is always fresh, colorful, and delicately flavored. The Tuna Avocado and Salmon Avocado are always a treat. Two of my favorite specialties are the White Monster and Alaskan Roll. I also enjoyed their Mackerel, Yellowtail, and White Tuna. The Red Snapper tasted a bit too much like the ocean for me. Sometimes at night the bar down the stairs can be loud (on the ocassion when the door opens), but it's still a nice little atmosphere with friendly service.
(4)T M.
Aloha Sushi offers a casual dining area upstairs as well as a downstairs bar area. Currently, they are offering 35 cents for oysters, shrimps, and wings! In addition, everyday (not just happy hour) they are offering $1.00 sushi. For happy hour, they offer 50% off their domestic draft beers! It was awesome. I enjoyed their sushi. Raw bar for oysters was fantastic for that price. It's not the best sushi joint, but if you're in for a good deal that won't burn a hole in your pocket then this place is good for that!
(3)Jeff W.
This review is for the lounge downstairs. The space is pretty comfortable, but I was a little surprised by how dead it was, especially considering it was Friday, and Ladies Night. (I thought ladies nights were reserved for Tuesdays and Wednesdays??) The bartender was a very friendly Korean guy, who I assume was working the bar with his wife. He was timid at first, but then once karaoke started, he "accidentally" set up one of the songs in Korean and started busting out some karaoke, much to the delight of the crowd. We had a good time but prices were a bit higher than expected and the beer selection isn't very good. Maybe the sushi is good, but I didn't get to try anything since they had stopped serving food by 10. The upstairs restaurant area seemed nice enough, but does Charles St. really need yet another sushi bar? If it's as cheap as people say, then this might be a worthwhile destination the next time I'm in the area. For lounging and karaoke, you can do far worse, but I'd drink somewhere else beforehand, and definitely grab some food before coming.
(3)Laurie W.
I enjoyed lunch here, actually. It wasn't the best but the food was fresh and the staff was very, very friendly. The rolls were ok - not awesome. I'm on a salmon and white tuna with avocado kick, and they were both fine - also both under $5, which was nice. (I'm really starting to hate the upcharge on everything just for living in Montgomery County.) I also got a couple of pieces of white tuna nigiri because they were $1 apiece. Lunch came with a teeny-tiny ginger dressing salad and miso soup, so it was a lot of food for very little money. The green tea was nice, too. I wouldn't drive special to get here but if I were in the Mt. Vernon area and had a sushi jones I'd go again.
(3)J S.
went here on a thurs late afternoon. nobody here. ate at the bar. salmon wa fresh and a good size for sashimi portions. tried the kalbi ribs . tasty. salad and soup were not good. only downside is the price. coming from portland. to pay 25 bucks for this was a rip off. although tasty. was not worth the price. would prob be a decent place to habe sushi and a beer
(3)Jessica K.
I am a fan of this place because there is no place in Baltimore at this price point with fresh creative rolls. I look for creativity on the menu when searching for a good sushi joint. The $1 sushi can't be beat - spicy scallop is the best. Are there better places in Bmore to get sushi? Sure but certainly not even close to the price. The same sushi dinner at my favorite location will be $50 per person (including drinks and tip) but at Aloha expect half that. Enjoy.
(4)Rebecca M.
great menu selection, always fresh & consistent, super friendly. Not sure why everyone loves Minato (better decor? although when I eat sushi that is not the first thing i notice or care about), this place is by far superior.

There aren't many places in that area you will find with kitchen still open on Sunday after 9pm. I loved the sushi I think the selection is pretty good, my husband loved the teriyaki sea bass (not a fan of sushi), and they have my favorite plum wine in that restaurant. I love sitting by the window and look down. I haven't tried their hibachi just yet.

Have been here twice for dinner and both times left fat and happy! The first time I tried this place was before a show at the Meyerhoff and the only thing I had to critique was the service. I think they were really understaffed that evening and for some reason it took FOREVER to get our cocktails from the bar. They have a pretty decent selection of sushi to choose from and other interesting entrees on the menu. I've really enjoyed their specialty rolls and the shitake mushroom roll is excellent! Last time I had dinner here I tried the sushi "lasagna" which was the strangest and tastiest take on sushi I've ever tried! It's literally exactly what it sounds like, several warm layers of rice, seaweed, fish and lots of different sauces all wrapped in a big foil pan. It's really heavy because of all the sauces but worth trying. They also have delicious peach martinis and many other cocktails to choose from. The service is really unpredictable, but always really friendly and helpful. The decor is typical for a Hawaii/tiki themed sushi restaurant. They have a bar downstairs and I'm guessing a dance floor because the music is always blaring. Prices are standard for sushi, not too pricey but not cheap. Worth checking out if your in the area!

The thing you have to try is the Sushi Lasagne. It comes in a foil boat and is a baked sushi roll with cream cheese and sauce and comes with either salmon, tuna or scallops. It is very different but very tasty. I was also there on a Friday night a was surprised at the lack of crowd downstairs. So if you are look for a place to just chill, it is ok for that.

Things I liked: 1. The sushi is cheap but manages to rise above grocery store level. 2. It's usually pretty easy to get a table & the wait staff is reasonably friendly. 3. They have these cute little $1 menu items that are like sushi cups! They roll seaweed around a base of rice and then fill in the top of the cup with all sorts of things. I had a 'cup' of seaweed salad, and a cup of spicy crab last time. it's fun to eat and pretty original! Things I did not like: 1. $8 cocktails. Really? This is Baltimore! Lighten up with the cocktail prices! 2. See the above comment about being just above grocery store fare. Good, but not that good.

Even with so many sushi options nearby (and trust me, I've been to all of them)... Aloha is the clear winner. The cheap prices, mouthwatering sushi, and excellent service always remains constant.

We stopped in here after a search on urban spoon after walking around Sailabration and getting hot and hungry for sushi. A couple other places we tried either didn't open til 5 or there was no parking. Chose this after decent reviews and a parking spot! We were pleasantly surprised, mother sushi was very fresh and the rolls were delicious. We also ordered the regular sashimi, again super fresh and generous slices. Would definitely go there again if in the Mt Vernon area.

The sushi here is pretty good given the location and price, but not amazing. Carry out is convenient if you live in the area. The restaurant has a few tables near the windows allowing for some people watching. I wasn't that happy with the BBQ choices, the preparation and quality seemed off. I would still be happy to stop here if in the area and looking for sushi. If you're somewhat fussy about the restaurant aesthetics you may want to walk down Charles to Minato instead.

mediocre sushi but cheaply priced for mt vernon. i usually eat here if i need to go to, or drop someone off at nearby penn station, b/c it's a relatively cheap and quick meal

I arrived on a Friday night without reservations. It was late, maybe 10PM so while the tables were crowded there were still seats at the sushi bar. My friend and I sat there waiting for menus for a good five minutes until I finally asked for one. They asked if we wanted a drink and I ordered a tea and my friend a beer. After a long wait, I received my tea but my friend did not get his beer until well after the sushi arrived which was also a little odd. I put our orders up onto the bar and the sushi chef grabbed my order but the waitress took my friends order. Needless to say, my order came out and was just sitting on the bar getting warm until I finally said I think this is my order. Meanwhile, I had no plates, no chopsticks, no napkin. SO I shared my order with my friend who also had no plate, etc., His beer finally came after his sushi approximately 25 minutes after he originally ordered it. The waitresses behind the counter or at their station area seemed completely unorganized. I think they ran out of dishes as when I asked to have a dish and a container for my soy sauce, I was given a plastic shallow soup- sized bowl for each. Again I was sitting there with my big sushi boat with no chopsticks, plate, or napkin. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED anything like it. Definite turn off as the two gentlemen beside me had nice square sushi ceramic plates and a appropriately sized square dish for their soy. UNACCEPTABLE presentation...oh and no napkins. I had to ask again. The waitresses didn't seem to know who or if they should wait on us, We are sitting at the sushi bar mind you...did it matter? SO service would land a 1 on the suckometer. Now for the food. Totally reasonably priced. Dollar sushi pieces really gives one the opportunity to explore. The fish tasted fresh and rice cooked perfectly. The sushi rolls (Spicy tuna and rainbow roll were good enough...not the best but considering the service I was initially scared that the food would also be in the pits. Like I said, much to my surprise the sushi rolls that we ordered were OK. I always like to try a place twice to see if I had a fluke visit (unless the fish is not fresh, the place is dirty, the atmosphere is unbearable or the food is really bad).

I agree with the previous reviews; however, I did want to compliment the restaurant for excellent service (Saturday lunch).

We were looking for a place to have a Saturday lunch before going to The Charles Theater for a movie. We stumbled upon Aloha Sushi when 3 other establishments on Charles Street were closed. We were not disappointed with our food and you get alot for your money.

solid, and a good value -- i would definitely go here again if i'm in the mt vernon area and want sushi. everything tasted pretty good (nothing was a revelation, but tasted fine), the service was prompt and polite, they give you miso soup & little bit of salad in the beginning, and you can eat a lot for a reasonable price.

Decent price for what you get. it's my go-to place for some sushi in Baltimore if I'm hungry and in search of some good sushi. my boyfriend really likes the soups there too. the raw oyster there are mehhh tho...I'd pass on those. the service has always been good every time I've gone there so that's a plus.
