Ok, I love the occasional Chinese food and tonight we ordered Take out and it was pretty good. Service goes a long way. I went to the restaurant, and ordered while I waited. The lady at the counter was more than happy to explain some of the dishes to me that I had questions about. We ended up ordering General Tso's Chicken (which Neil devoured), a vegetarian dish - Buddha's veggies, crab wontons, 2 veggie spring rolls, and the Chow Fried Rice and Lobster Fried rice. I know it's a lot of food for two people but we wanted a good sampling of the menu to see if we would go back. They neatly packaged our food in a way that it wouldn't spill - which I am a huge fan of. They included all the sauces and dips without asking. She also threw in some cookies for free even though they are on the menu and she ensured we had plenty of fortune cookies and I was able to ask for chop sticks no problem. So what I am getting at is they ensured we had everything we needed to ensure that we could eat comfortably without trying to find the soy sauce somewhere in my fridge. The food was ready in 10 minutes. I wanted Peking duck but that would have taken 25-30 minutes. She also warned me that the monkfish takes a little longer as well in case I ever ordered from them again. Very service oriented. The food itself was pretty good... the standard. I found they had a great selection of vegetarian dishes as well that appeals to me (I love my greens). The lobster rice left me yearning though. It was simpler than I anticipated.. no peas or veggies, just rice and lobster, nothing too exciting. But the mix fried rice was wonderful, meats full shrimp and veggies galore. Very tasty I might add. I was very happy, it also looked like they had a dining area that was pretty comfortable and appealing. Plenty of people were there eating on a Saturday night. For parking, you need to go into the rite-aide, grauls grocery parking and then just walk the 10 steps up the stairs. If you live here it works! Oh also they do limited delivery for those that live in the area - 20 dollar minimum. And they boast a lunch buffet at a discounted price.

Lunch choices were mainly the buffet table and some inexpensive daily specials so ordering from the menu was probably not a great idea judging from the prominence of the buffet offerings and cheap specials. Not worth the money without a doubt. Everything had an "off" flavor and tasted not very fresh. I ordered Hot Spicy Lamb with Spring Onion & Ginger. The shredded Lamb pieces were tough and flavorless with hardly a hint of spiciness or ginger seasoning at all. Scallions were nonexistent and replaced by a mound of onions instead. Broccoli with Garlic Sauce was another disappointment. Broccoli was old and yellow with a lame and obvious attempt to remove old sections of the tired, worn out broccoli. Also had this weird tasting brown sauce with onions, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts and mushrooms all tasting old and over the hill..

Initial caveat: I grew up on the west coast and lived within 10 minutes of 3 really good Chinese restaurants. My next door neighbor's family is Chinese and growing up I ate a number of (excellent) meals at their house as well. So that's where I'm coming from. The fried wontons inexplicably have meat in them. The wonton soup dumplings have incredibly thick dough, are huge, with only a small amount of unidentifiable filling (and the broth is not one I or anyone I know would've picked). The chow fun noodles are greasy in the extreme. This could go for nearly anything, however. I'll admit, we get takeout. But there is no reason for the above-mentioned setbacks, as well as others in dishes not mentioned here. I'm sorry, Canton Restaurant. I had such high hopes. Maybe this is part of a larger trend, like how sushi over here seems to have two to three times as much rice as on the west coast. ...aaaand now the grease hits my gut. Joy.

According to Yelp, 2 stars is equivalent to "Meh. I've experienced better." I couldn't have put it better myself. I'll qualify this by saying that I ordered the Beef with Broccoli combination which included hot and sour soup and an egg roll. It certainly wasn't a high-level authentic Chinese cuisine order on my part, granted, but as I've remarked in some of my other reviews, sometimes I just like some americanized Chinese food to nosh on. This was one of those days. Picking up the food, the woman at the front desk was the exact opposite of friendly. I asked what her favorite thing on the menu was so that I knew what to order next time and she told me, "oh, I like seafood". I again asked if she had any recommendations and she responded by asking me for my credit card. It wasn't a language issue, I can assure you. She did, it should be noted, allow me to pay with CC even though my total was less than the $10 min. The prices are low but, unfortunately, my enjoyment was low as well. The hot and sour soup was the high point, although not very high. Lacking flavor, it did offer a mild degree of spice. Beef with broccoli was unappetizing looking (is that cube steak?) and flavorless. I was hoping to add a little soy sauce since it lacked any salt whatsoever but none was included with my takeout. Chopsticks and/or flatware, as well as napkins, were also omitted. Fried rice was white. Totally white. Maybe they were just completely out of soy sauce? Egg roll was very soggy and filled with mysterious vegetables of questionable origin. I think the sogginess was due to being packaged in the same styro container as the rest of the food which allowed it to steam for God knows how long before I got there to pick it up. When I placed the order she said "see you" and hung up before giving me any indication on how long it would be before it was ready, it obviously sat and got cold and soggy for at least 15 minutes before I got there. So, yes, it was an $8 meal and I'm critiquing it like it's the French Laundry, but some of my best "cheap eats" experiences have been of the Chinese variety; this does not qualify. I'll check out one of the other local options next time, for sure.

So when you are in the heart of West Annapolis & hungry at dinner time you have as many choices as true or false quiz for something delicious. If you can't decide between the hot sandwiches at Regina's & B.B. Bistro is closed, check out the Canton Restaurant. It's got that neighborhood feel to it. I went there once & there wasn't one patron who went thru the door that the woman at the cashier didn't know by their first name. Being that it was the first time there, I opted for one of the specials, Crispy Eggplant in General Tsao sauce to go. Do yourself a big favor & eat it at table. This stuff is the bombay! My suggestion, although the look of the place says "carry out," eat in!

If you're looking to have good Chinese food delivered, this is the place! I've never had their food, and was suggested this restaurant by a friend. We ordered General Tso's, crispy beef, shrimp chow mein, fried dumplings and egg rolls. The General Tso's, while not spicy hot, was definitely enjoyable, as was the crispy beef. The egg rolls weren't greasy and they included an awesome homemade hot mustard to go with them. (I wasn't crazy about the fried dumplings because I didn't care for the accompanying sauce but everyone else liked them.) Other than that, all the dishes were good. I'll definitely be calling them again!

Is the Canton the best Chinese food I've ever had? No. Is it decent for those nights you just don't feel like cooking or going out for a bite? Yes!! I seem to be in the Yelp minority on this, but I like the Canton's food. I usually go for the basic and hard-to-mess-up Sweet and Sour Chicken combination platter. This comes with tons of chicken, fried rice, an egg roll, and soup. There is enough (for me) for 3 meals. And I like that. The Kung Pao Chicken is also good. On the downside, their egg rolls have shrimp in them, so I cannot eat them, and the vegetarian egg roll isn't that great. But hey, it's an egg roll, so I eat it by default! At times I can get MSGed after eating Canton's food, so watch out for that if you are sensitive. Overall, the convenience of delivery is the selling point here.

Well, three years later, things haven't improved. This is just your average sketchy Americanized Chinese restaurant. Possibly acceptable for takeout if you are desperate and live in the neighborhood; otherwise to be avoided. I don't usually have problems eating MSG, but something in the food reliably gives me a headache every time I eat here. The vegetarian dishes continue to be terrible. Don't be stupid like me and order Mapo tofu in a Cantonese-American restaurant. You will be very sad. I will say, though, that the wait staff are really nice.

The food was terrible. The soup smelled gross, the food was bland and oily, and we threw a lot of it away. I'm not going back...

This is a standard go-to for our family in a pinch. Their buffet for lunch is OK but the selection is fairly limited. And if it's getting close to 2:00 (closing for the buffet) they really don't want to resupply the food on the buffet. If you go for the lunch buffet, my suggestion is get there early. For dinner we sometimes will eat in, and the food is pretty good. Portions are good sized and the food is fresh. When we are in a rush, the carry out is very convenient, usually ready in 10 minutes. Overall, unless you are looking for gourmet, this place is not bad. They also have delivery available.

My mom suggested we go here for a meal one night and upon entering I was hesitant to say the least. The decor is dated and it's not the picture of cleanliness. HOWEVER, after ordering and trying the food, I was beyond surprised. They have really delicious food. Their menu isn't extensive and again, it's sort of dated, but everything you get is honestly tasty. The service was great, we were the only ones there when we started but the server was extra sweet. Great place if you can get past the looks!

I'm amazed that anyone would write a poor review about this restaurant. I won't order from any other Chinese restaurant. I order from them maybe once every month, and I have never gotten anything but delicious fresh food. Their shrimp with lobster sauce is better than anywhere I ever eaten. The shrimp are deveined and cleaned properly and the taste is wonderful. The restaurant is spotless. I have recommended this restaurant for years and all my friends love it. I think some of these people giving poor reviews may be from competitors trying to sabotage this business. Don't believe it. Eat the food at Canton one time, and you'll be sold.

Great people and good food at the Canton! They happily give us our own concoction: Chicken & Broccoli w/Garlic Sauce. Yum! A West Annapolis institution :)

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
