Manned by a feisty family, these guys know how to make a sandwich. They've got local specialty sandwiches and racks of hot spices and wines. There's even organic honeycombs in baskets. One sandwich can feed two!

oh my GOD, you guys are wimps. before I ever came here, I spent a solid year being scared off by Yelp's stories of soup Nazis and bad service. but the people who work here are really nice, especially by the rest of the country's deli standards! to anybody who thinks the people here are mean: I would recommend that you never, EVER go to a deli anywhere else in the world. anyway, the sandwiches here are eerily good - great bread, great cheese, great spreads, meats, etcetera; even the lettuce and tomato are always top notch. my sandwich of choice is the David's Delight, a six foot high construction featuring turkey, chicken salad, and bacon that I always order at the beginning of the cold season so that I can store the calories throughout the winter. things are expensive, yes, but what in the world do people expect from high end delis serving cured meats and raw cheese? you get what you pay for, friends. and anyway, every sandwich I've ever had here has been big enough to last two rounds. they also have a decent selection of beer and wine, a nice little meat and cheese counter, some snackish food (peanuts, chips, dip), and even a miniature grocery aisle with sauces and pasta and that sort of thing.

Family owned business, the cheese lady has been in the business for several generations. While I wouldn't go for the wines, she knows cheese, and they can make MEAN sandwiches. It is very high priced, but you get what you pay for... I thought customer service was lovely. And the recommendations they made for my hostess gift - spot on. Not a place to visit on a budget, but to splurge!

Great spot to get a solid sandwich. Expect about $10-12 per person after drink and chips - a little pricey but hey, it's downtown Annapolis. Simple, fast, and a great meal to take to the square and enjoy on the benches. (Especially when Annapolis is crowded)

Take your business elsewhere. I used to go in here a few times because I could not get enough of their sandwiches, and I used to put up with the horrendous people skills that these people have, but one day I decided never again. These people are disgusting to their customers and rude to each other. The price of their food is not worth it at all, especially when I asked for my sandwich hotter then what I got and the response was "you get what you get" Excuse me? And- these are these are the owners! I have gotten better service from someone receiving minimum wage at McDonalds. If you are the store owners: STOP BEING SO RUDE. Service with a smile is what really brings people back. NOT conning people into buying overpriced items. That enjoyable service will sell thousands of sandwiches and drinks and you wont have to mark up the price. You clearly have zero people skills- please go take classes in it. Or be a little more observant in other shops. Even McDonalds service would be an improvement. You really need to hire a professional consultant. I am not trying to be bitchy, I just want to see local Annapolis places do well, and maybe see you guys become better people. So nasty. If you read this and think to hell with what I just said... Well then your business will eventually go bankrupt.

I love Sammys. I used to work downtown Annapolis when Phillips was there and would always run off to Sammy's to get a sandwich. I'm not too big on extras so i would not get a drink. I just want a sandwich h7 please Annapolitan!! The older lady gentleman and daughter are not my concern. They are not a restaurant don't expect great service and they might have a sign out there that says "have it my way not your own its my business."but who cares. Note for the guy whose child was yelled at I agree when it comes to the kids its a different story probably would have screamed at them. but for the rest of you crying about grown ups, just eat the sandwichee! bye bye

I went there trying to find some cheese, and the first thing I notice is that they do not price their items. So naturally I ask the price of some cheeses I was interested in, only to find out that I could get the same cheese at Trader Joe's, twice as big, for half the price. So essentially, it is 4 times the price for the exact same thing (which they marketed to be the best thing in the world, as if we could only get it there). But that isn't the reason that compels me to write this. They were some of the rudest shop owners I have ever encountered, especially since you'd expect good treatment in a specialty store like this, and furthermore when they are so overpriced. Instead, I got a constant hovering over my shoulder and looking at what I was contemplating buying, in a most unfriendly manner. The woman then pressed me, asking if I will be buying any cheese, to which I politely said "No, thank you"; her response was "You know, we only sell the best here" in a slightly condescending manner, as if I was somehow not good enough for her shop. They also responded to my "Thank you" upon leaving with a sound that was a mix between a bark and a shriek, clearly annoyed that I didn't buy anything. I am an avid fan of good food, and I am actually usually content with paying for something, even if I feel it is overpriced, if I think the quality is good, and especially if I like the treatment. They could have had a loyal costumer here, but they lose yet another instead. A place to avoid.

I love this place for it's sandwiches. They actually cater to vegetarians. They have a few wonderful sandwiches for our kind. So you walk in and feel that this place is an upscale gourmet deli with no seating. It's a bit odd, but ok, no seating. Along the wall as you walk in you see all these wonderful hot sauces, spices, dips, crackers etc. They have a great selection of gourmet goodies. You get to the counter and you are greeted by the wonderful family that owns the place, you get treated like a king! They are so friendly and you can tell these people are good people. We have tried many of the sandwiches collectively and so far I recommend them all. They totally stack them, so you do get what you pay for, they charge a bit much. If you are in the area, go see it, walk in, get a bit, try the fancy chips... I think they also offer discounts for midshipmen.

While the sandwiches are relatively tasty with very unique ingredients there are too many negatives to this place to give it more than a star. First, while the sandwiches seem to be of healthful variety they are incredibly calorie dense. Yes, wholewheat rolls are good for you. No, a half pound piece of bread is not good for you. The options such as almonds and walnut or the various flavorful meets are indeed delicious but incredibly high in calories and fat. Second, I asked if I could make my sandwich hot, to which the female owner replied would be no problem. She then tricked me into the "wonderfully delicious sourdough bread they just got in instead of the normal bread (not telling me it was an extra 2 dollars). I got a drink which was marked up about 300%. And had to basically argue to avoid buying some sort of "homemade cookie" (not homemade). I then had to hear a 5 minute spiel on how to log in and register to vote for their restaurant for "Best Sandwiches in Annapolis". This is how they win every year, they campaign for it!!!!!!!! Only after paying for my outrageously expensive sandwich and walking back to my place to eat it did I realize that my sandwich was not hot (nor was it ever), the only thing that I actually wanted. My 15$ meal was average at best and the customer service is terrible. Overview: Decent sandwiches that are incredibly calorie high. Terrible customer service. Not worth it. Hit up Subway, at least you can get it toasted.

Very good sandwiches (not great, good) I must say, but terrible customer service. Also, quite pricy for what you get -- you can get better food elsewhere downtown and actually have a table and chairs to sit at. We were up-charged $2 for better bread on our order without being asked. Person behind the counter was rude and could not have cared less. Much better places downtown to go to.

Food is good and the staff is nice but the prices are outrageous. I have visited several times to try different items but will not be back again. Accepts credit cards when their machine is working.

"No soup for you, next!" I've eaten here six times and in four out of the six visits I've witnessed or have been victimized by he vile attitude of "the Daughter." I'm from New England so I'm a bit of an expert in the art of rudeness and these people take it to another level. The food is OK but it's a deli we're not talking French cuisine here. Order quality meats/cheeses and some fresh baked bread, boom, you've got a good deli. Their Yelp reviews have become more entertainment with everyone sharing nightmarish stories so here's one... My 3 year old son was asking me a barrage of questions because, well, he's 3. "The Daughter" looks me straight in the eye and asks, "Does he ever shut up?" I can take the abuse but once it is directed at my child you've crossed the line. The day this place closes I will be there to celebrate.

Delicious ma & pop shop! They have tons of sandwich combinations and I've never been disappointed with the food. There is no place to sit, so you have to take it to go. One of my favorite quick bites in Annapolis! Although sandwiches are highly recommended (I originally gave them a 5), I have lowered my stars to a 3 because of more than 1 encounter with the ma of the ma and pop duo who was a bit rude, snappy and condescending to customers who were unfamiliar with their lines/process. I have noticed quite a change in tone with the locals that she is familiar with...

The food, as many others have said, was really good quality. Unfortunately, the good quality was overshadowed by the high price and lackluster customer service. My husband and I did really enjoy our sandwiches, but $23 for two drinks and 2 sandwhiches? We could have had a sit down lunch elsewhere with better service. That being said, the food was decent quality, I'd go back for lunch if I was in a pinch and didn't feel like waiting anywhere else downtown but I won't become a regular by any means.

I am glad that I am not the only one to experience the soup nazi of Annapolis' ice cold customer service. Today I ordered a sandwich and said that I wanted mayo on it and received a lecture that it says mayo - so i did not have to say it- wow? The sandwiches are decent but the prices - on drinks which aren't posted are a rip off!

Man, I love this place. Dont worry about how gigantic the menu is because all the sandwiches are amazing. Also, try not to get too obsessed with one sandwich. Variety is the spice of life or whatever and this place has it, boy. If you're not sure what to get just ask. They LOVE suggesting sandwiches. You would think they'd get tired of telling you how good things are, but they really dont. I'm not sure how people found the staff to be rude. I'll go in maybe twice a month and they remember me everytime, sometimes asking my why so and so hasnt been around. They really appreciate all the business. They also carry a big selection of hot sauces. The younger woman is the hot sauce expert and will give some samples or recommendations. ----------------------------- Some of my favorites: The Downtowner on French Baguette, Annapolitan, Brie & Soprasetta (or Proscuitto). The Ultimate Italian Cold Cut is massive. I really dont know how this is on the menu. Its huge. The staff says its their best seller. I'm pretty sure eating the entire sandwich gave me a headache. Its awesome, just save half for later. Finally, they carry Pickle Chips. That should be all you need to know.

Rudest customer service I have ever encountered! I was in a hurry so I didn't notice that I was overcharged by $20 until checking my receipt. I went right back and had to complain for over half an hour to get my refund. The only saving grace is that the food was tasty. Still, not compelling enough to ever return. There is no way I can support a business that operates this way.

Over the last six years, I've tried and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. When you live less than 60 seconds from their door, you'd expect, at the least, a smile. Not so much. The food is good. Not great, but good and very different from most of what downtown offers. But the prices are high (for non sandwiches- outrageous) and the service stinks. (I one time witnessed the female owner bark at a child b/c he opened the front door more than twice.) The sandwhich selection is what earned them a 2nd star. Don't buy any drinks or chips- they're marked up about 200%. They don't put prices on the items because "it's hard to get them off when making gift baskets" ... when in reality they wait to ring it up and hope that people are too embarrassed to put something away b/c of the price. It works 80% of the time and for that 20% that say no thanks, they talk about behind their backs. The bagels come from a favorite bagel shop... seen the male owner in there picking them up. While I have seen them be very nice to some patrons, (notably St. Mary's students, Mids, and people dressed a certain way) I've seen them be downright rude... and heard them bad mouth people. And that is just unacceptable so they don't get my business or recommendation.

The sandwiches are to die for, it's true. But the service is awful, pushy, and condescending. I have been a cheese-lover since birth, but I haven't been back to this place since they sold me a cheese that had clearly gone bad (classic ammonia taste) and tried to pass it off on my "lack of experience with more pungent cheeses." The cheese was a soft double creme that most sources describe as MILDER than brie or camembert. I didn't even get my money back.

Jeff W.
Unlike some previous reviewers I didn't experience a bad attitude at all. In fact, I thought the staff here was particularly friendly and it seemed like they were all a family and treated me as such. The main focus here is cheese. All sorts of high quality cheese from all over the world. You can just buy some cheese if you want, or you can get one of their many creative sandwiches. There is an entire selection of sandwiches featuring a specific cheese. They also have a section made with meats. I can't remember exactly what I got, but it had turkey, apples, and brie and was outstanding! Bread was so fresh and the cheese was great. And prices were right too. Very consistent with a typical deli. Definitely a worthwhile stop while in Annapolis!

Tried the Annapolitan and Downtowner since they were the most highly recommended. Must have been an off day or maybe because it was towards the end of the day because they weren't that great. And overpriced at that. Plus we were treated rudely, and parking is a headache. Wanted to love this place but won't be back.

I have to be honest about this place, I love their selection of sandwiches and they would be the best place I would recommend visiting in downtown Annapolis BUT I am fed up with how I am treated in this place and would never go back. I have been made fun of and treated poorly one too many times. I could be a loyal customer, recommending this place to so many people, but they are just SO RUDE. I'd rather make my sandwich from now on and brown bag it than subject myself to that treatment.

Sandwich fans beware, your match has been met. This "off the beaten path" or rather right on it, sandwich/cheese shop is tops. With a line up of delicious sandwichs everyone seems to have their own favorite. I like the Annapolitan, or H7. A Turkey on wheat with thin sliced Granny Smith Apples and then melted Brie, Yum. Its not cheap, and might make you think you have accidentally ordered something in NYC, but its worth the price. Some say the service is gruff, but I say its New Jersey friendly.

Fantastic food and great selection, with moderate prices... Stopping by the Big Cheese/Sammy's Deli when in Annapolis absolutely made my day.
(5)
Kent D.
Quite simply, their sandwiches are huge, delicious and fantastic. Many options are available, but if you don't see one you like, just tell them what you want. The owners are gracious and warm people whose business is worthy of my dollars. Instead of some manufactured and processed crap at Subway or Quiznos, drop by here for a sandwich prepared with high quality ingredients and attention to detail. They also have a small selection of gourmet meats, cheeses and condiments. The only downsides to Sammy's are parking if you are driving into downtown and a higher price than a $5 dollar footlong. Get over it though, both are too be expected from a higher end deli in this location convenient to Ego Alley.

St. Mary's Slugger: order it, you won't be disappointed. I've tried several of their sandwiches but the SMS is by far my favorite. It runs about $6.90 which is somewhat pricey for a sandwich but what can you expect in downtown Annapolis. The SMS has turkey, Swiss bacon and honey mayo on toasted sour dough. YUM They sell many sandwiches featuring brie cheese if you're a fan. The granny smith apple and brie is a great tasting sandwich. I have been in many times where the "mean sandwich lady" has been a bit tudy! I just told the b*tch to shut the hell up and make my sandwich! (no I didn't, but it would have been fun!) She has her moments but the sandwiches are worth it. They offer beer and wine for sale and other cute items like cheeses and spreads. If you're in downtown Annapolis don't miss this great sandwich shop. Just ignore the mean lady if she's in one of her "angry moods". Give her a smile and smack her over the head with a $2 french baguette!

I lived in Annapolis for six and a half years and not only did The Big Cheese and Sammy's Deli (which is what the sandwich area of the store is actually called, named after one of the owners grandsons) became a staple of my Sunday afternoon routine, but it has been one of the things that I miss most about Annapolis. First, the sandwiches are to die for. They have a large selection to choose from ranging from the usual (BLT or PB&J) to the unusual (the Howdy Judy which consists of blue cheese, fresh pear slices, almonds, arugula and lemon curd dressing) to the incredible (my favorites are the Annapolitan and the Downtowner). The bread is delivered daily and the ingredients are always fresh so, no matter what you decide on, you'll not be disappointed. The baked goods are incredible as well; try the crumb cake. The Big Cheese portion of the store provides a source of wine, cheese, snacks, beverages and hot sauce to the historic downtown area and transient yacht-dwellers of Annapolis. The cheese selections are great and the baguettes are awesome. The other ingredient that really makes this establishment one of my favorite stops in Annapolis is the owners. They are incredibly sweet and are genuinely happy to see you. They are very helpful with their suggestions and have never steered me wrong. They directed me to a cheese there once that I could write an entire 5-star review about. Be aware that, as with almost everything in the historic part of Annapolis, the prices are not what you would call bargain basement. Sandwiches run from just under $4 for the PB&J to around $8 and maybe a little more depending on your bread choice. Not all together unreasonable; however, the wine and cheese selections are pricey when compared to other locations not located within 50 steps of City Dock. That being said, what I wouldn't give to be able to roll out of bed on a Sunday and stroll over to Sammy's Deli for a Downtowner (roast turkey, cheese, sprouts, cucumber and apple butter....I'm dying thinking about it). One thing to note is that the address that is shown is incorrect. Market House is wack and will remain so until the current mayor of Annapolis loses an election to someone who is competent and the space is managed correctly (sorry that is the political fire in me speaking). The actual address is 47 Randall Street which is just down the street from Market House, across from Middleton's just up from the hardware store.

If you love cheese and GREAT (and I mean the best you've ever had) sandwiches you have to stop in here on your way through town. Get the warm prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich ! It's dynamite and probably enough for you and your date! I was such a big fan I had to take the picture for my profile!

i've never felt more ripped off then when i just went into this sandwich shop. on the board they have a fresh mozzarella and tomato sandwich for $7. the woman ask me if i wanted french baguette (as if there's any other kind of baguette) and i said yes. unbeknownst to me because no where on the borad does it say, but the "french" baguette is two dollars extra. i spent six months in france studying french cuisine and have been a chef for over 15 years. no where does the bread i got even resemble "french" baguette. when i brought up that the board needs to clarify the price difference, the woman (who was about 90 years old) said that it does clarify. while waiting for my crappy sandwich i must have spent 5 whole minutes looking for what she was talking about....but couldn't find it. making a good sandwich is an art and i think its time for these people to hang it up. good riddance to bad rubbish!!!!

Pay the $2.00 for the fresh bread, be polite and smile and you food will be delicious. Sure you can go find a cheaper sandwich in Annapolis. But it won't be as delicious. When it comes to food, you pay for what you get.

was so excited to go back to the big cheese after not having been in town for years and was really let down - the owners were so nice, especially the man! but wow his daughter was so rude and made me feel so uncomfortable, in most situations like that i would probably have just left! couldn't decide on a sandwich until the owner came out and helped me (i think he saw how put off i was by his daughter) and left with two. both were great, except the one that was supposed to have avocado and sprouts didn't have either on it (but was still pretty darn good - still, it wasnt what i ordered) the man that owns the shop was genuinely kind and helpful, however i dont think ill be taking the hour detour again on account of his rude daughter

Last time we were here was celebrating a 30 year USNA reunion....hard to believe it was time for 35. This business is better than ever....I don't think they raised their prices in 5 years so they got upped a star for same great sandwich at even better prices. The French bread is delicious and the cheeses and prosciutto are high quality. Again, if felt like I was back in Europe and the sunny 70 degree weather only added to the experience.

This deli is a gem to the Downtown/City Dock area. I had never heard of this place until I stopped in with a coworker during lunch. First of all, you are always greeted with the nicest smiles and waves and hello's by the owners. The deli smells amazing and their food is wonderful. They have a long long list of sandwiches although (The #1 is my go-to, Dill Havarti/Veggies). You'll need to take the food to-go though, as they don't have an eat-in area. The shop is filled with adorable hostess gifts and great spreads, crackers, not to mention unique wines! Pop in if you're downtown. You will love it!

I don't even really like sandwiches, but I really enjoyed the one I got here! After a day of strolling around DTA, this is a great place to go to grab a bite to eat. I got a roast beef sandwich on a french baquette. I love cheese, so it's a given that I favored that part. The person I was with got a large BLT-type construction that he really enjoyed as well. Prices are decent for the quality you get. They have a fantastic selection of sauces and wines, too, if you're in the mood for it. The only complaint I have was that when I was there, I felt hurried by the people at the counter. They kept making comments and suggestions when I was trying to just mull things over myself.

I stumbled into this little gem by accident. I was out on a girls day and we had lunch here. I was a little worried about the prices, since some sandwiches were as much as $9 but I can say it was worth every penny! The couple running the place were super sweet, they were completely unfazed by our group of 15 women! The way they did the ordering was the most efficient I've ever seen in a restaurant. They started making sandwiches as the orders were being placed, so the food was done within 5 min of all the food being ordered. I ordered whatever they recommended as the best, which was the H9: the Taylor Made. Oh my gosh. It was incredible. I'm not sure I've ever had a sandwich THAT good. The sandwiches are all a pretty good size and I could only eat half. They're also really good cold the next day. This place has the whole package: great food that's priced just right, great customer service, they're fast... And its right downtown. The Big Cheese is a MUST if you're in Annapolis!

When we stopped in on a Saturday afternoon, Sammy's was full of Midshipmen and their families who were grabbing lunch before a Navy football game later that afternoon. It's a traditional deli in that you can pick up some gourmet products and various meats, but nearly everyone was there to get something from the deli's extensive sandwich menu. I did the same. I decided to try two different sandwiches that I could snack on later during my afternoon of watching college football. In an attempt to try an assortment of meats and flavors, I ordered the Hot Pastrami & Swiss and the St. Mary's Slugger. The pastrami & swiss came with deli mustard on toasted rye bread and the St. Mary's Slugger came with turkey, lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese, and honey mayo on toasted sourdough bread. Both sandwiches were excellent. They piled the pastrami on the toasted rye bread and the spicy brown mustard was just as it should be on a pastrami sandwich, providing a bit of heat and spice while combined with the tangy flavor of the swiss cheese. But if I had to choose a winner between the two sandwiches, I'd go with the St. Mary's Slugger. The roasted turkey was delicious and everything tasted extremely fresh. I actually meant to order the sandwich with the honey mayo on the side but forgot to request that when placing my order. I was happy to make the mistake as the honey mayo ended up being one of the best parts of the sandwich. It was lighter than a traditional mayo and the honey made it taste like a honey mustard. If I were a Midshipman (heaven help us all), I could easily see myself polishing off two or three St. Mary's Sluggers on a regular basis. It was great to be able to order a couple sandwiches from Sammy's Deli and walk over to the waterfront in Downtown Annapolis. We found a spot on a bench and watched the boats sail around the bay while Midshipmen spent time with their friends and families and walked around town.

So far I've only had one sandwich and it was delicious--the apple, brie, and cinnamon one. I felt a little upsold on the baguette for an additional charge, but it indeed *was* worth it, so I can't complain!

Nice shop! There is a wide selection of chips, crackers, hot sauces, cheeses, etc. for sale. Many things that I can find at my local Harris Teeter but some novel things as well. I got a sandwich - the brie and prosciutto - I guess it is $2 extra for a french baguette? I didn't realize that when I ordered, otherwise I would have gotten it on regular bread. So beware. The couple who runs this has been married for 50 years - how cool is that! He was taking sandwich orders and she was running the register. I liked my sandwich, the bread was especially good. It was so big that I ended up eating the other half for lunch the next day.

(1)Jason D.

(5)Greg S.

(2)Anne P.
(1)Jeff W.
(4)Jane D.
Tried the Annapolitan and Downtowner since they were the most highly recommended. Must have been an off day or maybe because it was towards the end of the day because they weren't that great. And overpriced at that. Plus we were treated rudely, and parking is a headache. Wanted to love this place but won't be back.
(1)Matt C.
All around a great experience. Probably the best sandwiches in town! Short review I know, but the place speaks for itself.
(4)T Y.
It's local. It's a real-life sandwich shop with the owners behind the counter. The sandwiches are good. Jared doesn't get his sandwiches here.
(4)Chris C.
A great little place. They've got a real nice selection of sandwiches and cheeses you won't find most anywhere else.
(5)Chris S.
Great sandwiches! I was glad to see this place found somewhere to open after the market place debacle.
(5)Debbie K.
(2)Nathan W.
(4)Aaron J.
Fantastic food and great selection, with moderate prices... Stopping by the Big Cheese/Sammy's Deli when in Annapolis absolutely made my day.
(5)Kent D.
(5)Nan G.

(5)Christopher S.
i've never felt more ripped off then when i just went into this sandwich shop. on the board they have a fresh mozzarella and tomato sandwich for $7. the woman ask me if i wanted french baguette (as if there's any other kind of baguette) and i said yes. unbeknownst to me because no where on the borad does it say, but the "french" baguette is two dollars extra. i spent six months in france studying french cuisine and have been a chef for over 15 years. no where does the bread i got even resemble "french" baguette. when i brought up that the board needs to clarify the price difference, the woman (who was about 90 years old) said that it does clarify. while waiting for my crappy sandwich i must have spent 5 whole minutes looking for what she was talking about....but couldn't find it. making a good sandwich is an art and i think its time for these people to hang it up. good riddance to bad rubbish!!!!
(1)Wade C.

I picked up a menu last weekend with hopes of returning soon. Glad I did. Everything in here is amazing. Excellent food and excellent customer service. Ingredients are fresh and sandwiches are delicious. Try the Brie with Honey & Almonds, it's incredible!
(5)Nicole F.

(5)Lauren A.
(3)Logan K.

(4)Claire G.
So far I've only had one sandwich and it was delicious--the apple, brie, and cinnamon one. I felt a little upsold on the baguette for an additional charge, but it indeed *was* worth it, so I can't complain!
(4)Emily V.
(4)Barbie G.
I came here once while my sister lived in town and was so impressed, I came back two years later. Sopressata and Brie on the banquette! Yum. No place to sit but go for a walk and enjoy the sites!
(4)James W.
I am working my way through the menu this summer and haven't found a sandwich I don't like. The only way this place could be better is a deal with Postmates to bring the sandwich to me.
