This is our new favorite sushi place. We can sit in the back and watch orioles baseball while having delicious sushi. If you like tuna - try the crazy tuna roll, the matsu roll is also amazing! Very friendly wait staff, very clean restaurant and prompt food ready for takeout. Eating in it takes a little longer to get sushi, just because they had so many carry out orders. But definitely worth the wait.

Great service and food presentation. The young lady at the front was very sweet! I ordered a cucumber roll, California roll and shrimp & vegetable tempura, to go. The sushi was really good and reasonably priced in my opinion. They did forget my spicy mayo! But im not too concerned about that. The shrimp and vegetable tempura was mediocre. Not a huge fan and probably wouldn't order again. I would definitely come back just for sushi though!

This place is great. It has changed many times over the last 9 years, and had some quality issues. My daughter and I are regulars. The sushi is always good. We enjoy the seaweed salad. Friendly staff and clean. I like to eat there best, have done carryout , and delivery. Good boxes. They have a book of rolls. Yet to try the sake menu. The sushi bar is smaller, but the atmosphere comfortable. Favorite rolls are the Canary or Spider. I have yet to try the Habachi rice.

Where is the Japanese? I want to see words like Maguro, Tobiko, Tamago, or Hamachi on the menu. Those can easily be printed by the English. I have to say, although some of the sushi chefs were Chinese they still made decent sushi. Seems like many of the sushi chefs in town are Chinese. I really liked the ambiance. It felt like a little hole in the wall sushi place. The tempura was pretty good too along with their sauce. I didn't want to order the udon noodles which is why I even walked in here..because the bowl was HUGE. So more Japanese please. And it's ni-gi-ri...no idea how it was pronounced, took me a few seconds to figure out what was going on. And maybe everyone could be a little bit more friendly?

We wandered in for a late lunch around 2:30 and were initially put off by the completely empty restaurant but in the end I'm glad we stayed. Very fresh, tasty sushi, prepared extremely quickly. No joke, I think we waited 8 minutes for it to arrive. The prices are about what you'd expect to pay for sushi; rolls are $5-6 and they have a nice lunch special for around $13 which came with a salad (average) but a nice selection of nigeri, rolls and sashimi. Very friendly staff.

My girlfriend's sister took me there last night. Now before you get the wrong idea, my girlfriend was there too. Any other ideas you may get from that, I will neither confirm nor deny. None of us got the sushi. I am a sushi lover. However, I lived in Hawai'i for five years and was craving some good Chicken Katsu as I haven't had any since I left the islands two and a half years ago. Well, I found it here! The Chicken Katsu hit the spot. But strangely, the simple side dish of rice did not. It was so overcooked as to be near mush. However, I will go back and try the sushi. Pros: Great Chicken Katsu Reasonable prices Half price beers on weekends Cons: Unappealing sides of overcooked rice Not so great location

Not very good sushi, especially for the price.

They deliver! I had a bento box delivered and it was great. I've never been in the restaurant, but I'm a fan of the fact that this place will deliver and take credit cards over the phone.

Not too shabby but not the best. We walked in right at the dinner opening when the sign flipped at 4:30pm. We were presented with a hot hand towel to begin our meal. That was a pleasant added touch to the service. It wasn't busy but the service is a bit slow, maybe they weren't expecting customers right at opening and still needed to complete some prep. The shrimp shumai tastes like it was from one of those frozen packages you could buy at H Mart... Not really shumai like the kind you can get at a dim sum restaurant. But you know, I'm at a sushi restaurant, not a dim sum place. The miso soup tastes like any miso soup you would get at a sushi restaurant. The salad was iceberg with a cherry tomato on top and dressing. I didn't eat the salad. The Philadelphia roll had a tad bit much cream cheese but the California roll was good. The rolls are big, which is good. I had the sushi and sashimi combo. It was presented very nicely. I loved it all... But a few of the sashimi pieces tasted as if it came out of the freezer... Since a part of it was at room temperature and the middle was icy and frozen. The waitress came back to our table towards the end when she noticed we had no water left and offered a refill of water. We declined since we were ready to pay the bill and leave. We were offered coffee candy, a magnet, and a takeout menu. Probably one of the better sushi places I have been to so far in Maryland. Prices are fair. I would consider going back to this establishment.

I love coming here after work and getting a beer and sushi. The environment is very relaxed and is never to crowded, atleast on weekdays. The girl always remembers my order and is informative when asking about the menu.

If I could put zero stars I would ! Should've realized something was up when you walk in a restaurant during lunch hour and no one is there. The food was overpriced and disgusting. The sushi isn't fresh and shouldn't even be sold. The spicy tuna literally was so fishy tasting it was sad. there was 1 waitress and 1 cook and they literally took forever .. Keep in mind we were the only people there

Fresh, delicious, and a friendly staff! I'll be back! Close to home a plus! And they deliver!! Never have had sushi delivered, I believe I'll dine in, but nice to know it's an option:

I just ordered delivery from there the spicy tuna and spicy salmon was so bad that I had to spit it back up and couldn't even eat it . This is defiantly one of the worst experiences I have had I do NOT recommend delivery from here.

A dump that smells of old cooking oil, but... They always heat their eel before making unagi nigiri, when they have sea urchin roe (uni), it's fresh as it gets and you get at least eight sacks for less than $10, their sweet shrimp has properly cooked heads (the best bit) and if you ask, they often have off-menu items that are just fantastic. Tonight, I ate yellow tail collar - one of the most gelatinous fish plates you can imagine and damn it was so good and impossible to find anywhere else. Plus since they had the head, you know they got a whole yellow tail and kept the best bits of people that really like proper fish. Too many rolls like many sushi places (for sushi poofs) but if you ask and get something truly unique, you'll be in foody heaven.

Went to this place for lunch and had a nice experience. They had several lunch specials to choose from. We choose the 3 maki rolls and the sashimi & sushi combo which came with 4 pieces of each and a tuna roll. It was a chilly day so we started off with the miso soup. There was something in the soup that made it richer than I am used to. I generally expect and prefer a more delicate miso soup. The presentation of the sushi was beautiful. Everything was perfectly sliced. The rolls were nice and tight. There was nothing sloppy about them. They also used soy sauce and a spicy mayonaise to decorate the plate in a floral pattern which was a nice touch. Also, the spicy mayo was pretty tasty. For our rolls we chose the spicy tuna, Philadelphia, and shrimp tempura. All of the rolls were very good, but nothing spectacular. In fact the rolls they had to choose from were pretty basic. There was nothing that made me curious or interested. Other reviews in here have mentioned a cowboy roll and something called crazy tuna. Neither of these items were on the lunch menu. Overall the rolls were good, but pretty basic. The sashimi and sushi were excellent. The chef picked and he did a good job. The fish was very fresh. The nigiri included white tuna, salmon, red snapper, and yellowfin. The sashimi included two pieces of white tuna and two pieces of yellowfin. I would have liked four different types of sashimi or at least for the sashimi to have not overlapped with the nigiri. But maybe the chef was just giving us the best he had and I can appreciate that over given us fish that wasn't high quality. The biggest problem is that the rolls were drenched in this overly sweet sauce. I like sweet (especially when it is combined with spicy) but this is ridiculous. Overall it was pretty decent, but nothing special. The sweet sauce was a big problem. I will probably go back for dinner.

Friendly staff and the sushi is the freshest I've ever eaten. Awesome!!!!

This restaurant has been a Japanese/Sushi place for a long time through multiple owners. Sometimes it is good, sometimes not. It is currently striving to reach mediocrity. The traditional ginger salad dressing was gritty and tasteless. The sushi lunch is down from six pieces of sushi (and a roll) to four pieces (and a roll). Service is attentive but not added to by the child of an employee or ran about the restaurant. I really don't want a paper airplane on my table while I'm eating lunch. Pass.

Sorry mr Howard.T. I forget take to you:Whatever sushi, at room temperature for one night after devolution best drained immediately! Believe me, sushi is part of RTE foods at room temperature, it is easy to breed bacteria! ! ! ! Unless you put a night of sushi the next day put the pot add a little boiling water and eat. . . I work in a sushi bar, sushi at room temperature, put more than four hours after that basically there will be a smell! We usually choose to dismiss does not sell! Otherwise, guests eat bad stomach trouble! Thank you sir! Matsu owner

If I could give negative stars I would. I ordered online and I've waited over 2 hours for it to be delivered. I understand that when food gets delivered, it can take some time. I am NOT understanding about getting yelled at when I call and ask politely about my order. Since when did it become appropriate for the person on the phone to rip my head off and yell at me, telling me that I need to just suck it up because they are busy. Not only was the woman extremely rude, but she failed to provide any answer to my question of, "where was my order?" Then she hung up on me. I have no idea where my food is, it is still not here, & I have no idea if it is going to show up at all. Frankly, I'm afraid to eat it, as sushi is not supposed to sit out for two hours. I will never ever order here again.

This is the best sushi I've had around here. Service is the best! Not sure what the negative reviews are about but maybe this is a depends on the sushi chef. Word of advice, do not go for sushi on Sundays. Last delivery was Friday.

Ordered carryout from Matsu last week. Presentation still very good, even in carryout containers. Big plus having online ordering. Sushi was fresh and did well on the ride home. Prices were what I'd expect. Wouldn't go out of my way to order/ dine-in there again as there are many other local options I prefer in terms of quality/price/uniqueness of offerings.

The best sushi place in Annapolis for a quick to-go meal. They have a great selection of rolls and specials. The customer service is great. Annie at the host stand is always helpful and offers discounts if the wait time is more than a few minutes for repeat customers. Highly recommend Matsu Sushi!

Got take out sushi late one evening. Sushi was dry and smelled old. Worse sushi I've had in Annapolis. Won't be coming back.

I've been here twice in the last week, because I happened to be in the area. The first time was a sit down experience and the second was a takeaway. On my first visit, what I found interesting right off the bat was that even though I was in a booth and not at the sushi counter, I wasn't given a sushi menu along with the regular menu to give to the sushi chef for a custom order. As I tend to judge japanese restaurants by their philly rolls (see my review on Ziki's), I was a bit surprised, and I realized I should have asked, but oh well. Moving on. I got yakitori, and the lunch gyoza bento box and (yum!) miso soup. Everything was delicious, including the california rolls that came with the bento. Tonight was my takeaway meal. The 'rents wanted Five Guys which is right next door, and while sometime I crave a really good burger, tonight was not my night for one. Matsu to the rescue! I got the Negimaki Matsu bento box (= a LOT of food!) and the 2 roll appetizer (cucumber). I'd never had Negimaki before, and had to look up what it was before I ordered. Ok, scallions wrapped in beef strips. Sounds good. This is a personal preference, so this is not the fault of the restaurant. I didn't love the negimaki. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. Something about the type of beef that just didn't click with me. The rest of the bento was great and the cucumber rolls were devoured in short order. So overall I'd give them an A - presentation was good for takeaway - they even put a piece of cardboard between the bento and the rest of the food so the cool stuff wasn't sitting directly on top of the hot stuff. The restaurant itself is decked out in typical Japanese style - square lanterns, soy sauce bottles on the tables, etc. I was very pleased to see it is being kept up and it was very clean when I ate there. As I've done a review for the Safeway down the street, I'll say the same thing here. The place is surrounded by public housing which tends to breed citizens that aren't exactly upstanding. I probably wouldn't be hanging around here at midnight, blitzed out of my mind, trying to unlock my car. Heck, I wouldn't be hanging around here at midnight, period. I'm not saying you're going to be held up every time you're here, but I would be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. On that note, do come here for some decent sushi! Sushi is always best eaten with a friend or two in tow! :-)

I'm a sushi lover, and eventually hit just about every place in town that serves it. Stopped by here on a slow Saturday afternoon when I was a bit peckish. No major complaints, but no major compliments, either. Decent location and service, but uninspiring offerings at an average price point. Roughly supermarket quality, if just a bit fresher. Hit it if you like sushi and need a quick, reasonably-priced lunch. Skip it if you're a connoisseur, or are looking for something really special.

Chicken teriyaki is very very thinly sliced. Horrible service. I don't know why this place got decent reviews at all

I got talked into going to Matsu last week. Some of the other sushi places in Annapolis have left me skittish about venturing into the unknown (see my review here of Yama Sushi), but I went because my companion had very good things to say about the place. Well, I got a very pleasant surprise. Efficient, knowledgeable wait staff. Prompt and polite service. And, best of all, good sushi. I ordered a la carte from the sushi menu, bypassing all the sushi dinner combinations. I started with miso soup and, unlike a previous reviewer, I enjoyed the heartiness of the stock they used. The nigiri sushi and the rolls were exquisitely prepared. Thick, even slices of fish, solid and expertly-formed rolls. My only complaint, and it is slight, is that the gunkan maki were too big. When you're eating salmon roe gunkan maki style, you can't safely do it in bites. The whole package needs to of a size that you can neatly pop into your mouth. With Matsu's Ikura, I thought I'd need a shoehorn to wedge it in. My only other complaint, again a mild one, is that Matsu is falling into the trend of fake sushi. At dinner, we were presented with a separate makizushi menu that I at first thought was a wine list. No, it was a few pages of whacky, over the top rolls, many of which cost in the neighborhood of $15. For a roll? Really? I got news for ya, that ain't sushi. Try ordering that in Tokyo, or in some of this country's better and more traditional sushi bars, and you'll be lucky to only be laughed out of the place. At best it's an American interpretation of sushi, an expression of our tendency to super-size and obliterate individual flavors and textures. Give me a simple, elegant Tekka Maki any day. Okay, enough silly whining. All the fish tasted fresh and delicious. The chef was judicious in applying wasabi between the fish and rice, so there were no ugly surprises. Another big plus ... when I asked for green tea, I got a traditional cup with tea leaves at the bottom. No tea bag, as I've gotten at other, less reputable establishment. While I am of the opinion that Joss has the best sushi in Annapolis, and that Tachibana has the best sushi in the universe, I will still keep Matsu on my list of places to be relied upon for delivering good, fresh sushi at a reasonable price.

After several more screw ups with carry out, the worst chicken teriyaki I've ever had and a piece of salmon that smelled so strongly I threw it away, I've now given up on this place....yuck.

one of my best sushi experiences. The presentation is superb. Definitely come back again.
