Basmati Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

I came here today for the lunch buffet. The place was very nicely decorated. Some of the tables were oddly placed however. We were acknowledged and seated immediately. I thought the food here was very good however there were a few discrepancies. I tried the salad with the mint sauce, the rice pudding, a mango dessert, saag, chicken tikka massala, naan bread, and the fish chili. My friend also tried the tandoori chicken. The mint sauce was very good. I liked it a lott. I had expected the rice pudding to be a little thicker. It was a little too watery for me and not enough of the rice. The saag and the naan bread were both very good. The chicken was flavorful but slightly dry. I had hoped that there would be more items in the buffet. I was looking forward to trying some lamb but sadly there was none. I would come back here again. The price for the buffet wasn't bad at all and we left feeling stuffed.

My wife and I love Basmati. We go often and have always had both great food and service.

Great food, consistent quality throughout the meal. The service was perfect, we never wanted for anything. I will be back.

Great food. More complex flavors than the other Indian place that's been in Annapolis forever. I only wish that the servers at Basmati were as great as they are at the other place (you know where I'm talking about). Great vindaloo and even better chicken saag...and naan and kulcha very well done too. They ask what level of spice you want and they deliver. Great food...just need to get the wait staff to be more upbeat and welcoming. They weren't bad but just no charm.

I would probably give this place 4 1/2 stars if I could. I have been here now three times and think I like it a little bit more every time I go. I have always avoided the other Indian place in Annapolis due to its lackluster reviews, preferring instead to venture to one of the very good Indian places in the Columbia area when my cravings made it worth the long drive from Crofton. Is Basmati quite on par with someplace like House of India in Columbia? Not quite, but close, and in some ways it is better. Basmati benefits from a much better selection of alcoholic beverages, including a couple of decent beers to choose from. The overall quality of the appetizers and desserts are also superior. In the quality of the main entrees, I think Columbia still has them beat, but not by too much. On the other hand, Basmati's entrees don't taste like they have an entire stick of butter cooked into each one the way House of India's fare does. Basmati's naan is also simply excellent. Service has been excellent all three times I have been. This last visit, we ordered vegetable samosas, vegetable pakora, chicken korma and saag paneer. We realized quite quickly that what was brought to our table was chicken saag rather than paneer but ate it anyway, enjoying it, and only mentioned the mistake to our waiter after the fact. Not only did he and what appeared to be the manager apologize so profusely that I was reminded of the Monty Python dirty fork sketch. They then proceed to comp us our kheer (which is delicious, by the way) but then brought us out a full order of saag paneer for us to take with us. So, big thumbs up from me. We can now enjoy quality Indian fare in Annapolis without feeling like we are compromising by saving on time and gas by not driving 45 minutes away to get it.

To be honest - it was the best indian food I've had so far in the area (not hard to beat the existing, huh?). I went on a Saturday night - it was pretty busy - and ordered the standard appetizer, drinks, dinner, sides, dessert... Everything we ate was very good. Chicken not as tender as I have had in other good Indian places I've been before, but sauces were pretty much up to par. The only issue I had was with the waitstaff. It took a long time to get our waiter back - they may need another 2 waiters or something. If you want a 2nd drink, you may want to order it before finishing your first! The decor was pleasant and inviting. I would definitely go back again and bring friends there. In fact, we've already ordered takeout from there since we've been there a week ago :). I recommend basmati to my fellow yelpers :)

This place never disappoints! The service is awesome and so is the food. What more can you ask for in a restaurant? The atmosphere is nice and clean. My boyfriend and I visit this spot every time we're in Annapolis.

Great atmosphere. My wife and I took our two children, and the hostess and servers were very accommodating. Vegetarian samosas, aloo tiki, and papadum with chutneys were all delicious appetizers. Our chicken makhani and lamb vindaloo entrees -- ordered spicy -- were very good. We'll definitely be back.

Overall solid experience. My wife and I teased each other about going out for Saturday night dinner at 5:45 PM but we wanted to beat the crowds mentioned in other reviews. The hostess was pleasant and asked if we had reservations and then explained that all of the tables in the dining room were reserved for 6 PM dinner. (Good for them!) We opted to sit at the bar for our meal and it too filled up quickly with other couples without reservations. The staff was hustling but you could tell they were still working out the kinks in their service and getting familiar with the routine. All of the food runners coming to the bar had to ask the bartender where to drop the plates, which distracted her from keeping an eye on the patrons. I understand eating at the bar comes with its own expectations but she did a good job of getting to everyone. My exposure to Indian cuisine is limited to a few evenings in Columbia, Md and Boston, Ma but I thought the food was well done. We had Papri chaat (excellent) and veggie samosas (ok) to start and Lamb saag (good sauce, lamb should have been more tender) and Began bharta (sp?)for our entrees. Definately will go back to check out the lunch buffet which is a great way for people who are not familiar with Indian food to "get their feet wet". Decor and space are tasteful and ample and the lighting is much better than it was when the space sailed under different flags.

Stopped in for the buffet and it was a pleasant experience. The staff was helpful and courteous. The price was very reasonable. I had the spinach paneer and mixed vegetables and they were both spicy and delicious. Highly recommended.

We have been going on a regular basis and never been disappointed. Good food, very good service, reasonable prices. They have the best raita, just that makes the visit worth it. Highly recommend!

Well, where do I begin........ You walk in, from a strip center and are instantly embraced in an atmosphere in which delights your every sense. The aroma when you enter excites you, its a fantastic blend of spices, the genuine warmth of the staff that greet you immediately, The absolutely beautifully adorned interior. I knew immediately that this was going to be special. The atmosphere is nothing less than remarkable. We were seated and served bread with 3 sauce accompaniments which as soon as you delve into your culinary adventure begins. Every member of the staff is concerned with your experience, they are to a person, gracious, polite, attentive and helpful. We ordered Soup, Mulligatawny and a Tandoori sampler, for starters, (They came out with the entrees, but that was no problem when it was all said and done) and for entrees Chicken Korma, Tandoori Salmon and a lobster dish ( Kahari). I will not even attempt to describe how delightful these dishes were. The Chicken Korma was beyond my expectations and was easily one of the best renditions of the dish, that I have ever had. Every portion of the sampler was phenomenal, Chicken, Lamb, Shrimp, and Vegetables all delicious. Even the utensils and service ware are stunning , Crisp white table cloth's, sparkling chandeliers, the ceiling is visually captivating, the entrancing subtle beauty of sitar playing (if it were live, that would have really put it over the moon for me, I'm greedy I know ) But this place, it is a labor of love, and it shows, it shows in not only the meal, which is beyond compare, it shows in every facet of this establishment. Everyone in our party were as pleased as they could be with the entire experience. We ordered dessert I ordered Kheer (Rice Pudding) my wife ordered Gulab Jamun which is cottage cheese fried and coated in honey, our waiter Dabendra, suggested that we have the two mixed together, that he usually enjoys it that way, and once again, Delightful !!!!! We prepared to leave, several employees asked what we thought, we gushed compliments of course, one of the gentlemen laughed and said" I knew you would say that but I had to ask anyway", because he had heard it at least 5 times at 5 tables while we sat there! I excused my self to wash my hands as we prepared to leave, and of course, the bathroom, as exceptional as the rest of the place, just beautiful. I appreciate the product of perfection which is dutifully crafted not just as an object in which to create income, but truly as a testament of the respect and love for the culture that there craft serves to represent. Basmati does just that !! A culinary masterpiece wrapped in warmth and authenticity . I feel like saying at this point the price doesn't matter, but of course, it really does, and I'm happy to tell you, its pretty reasonable. Enjoy !!!!!

I felt very at home here. The service was very good and the owner was a very nice man who seems genuinely out to create a great experience for his customers. The food was classic Indian fare. I do not know much about Indian food but everything tasted fresh and had good bright flavors. They do a lunch buffet and they have a decent sized bar area.

We enjoyed our dinner at Basmati. When you are seated, your table is set with a basket of poppadoms and a delicious assortment of 3 dips. Yum! We had good vegetarian starters and found all the main courses to be tasty, though too mild for our liking. Flavors are not as bold as they are in other Indian restaurants (and I don't mean just the chili-related hotness). We prefer when the flavor of various spices comes out more in the sauces. Service was impeccable. Our only complaint, really, is that the restaurant is too loud. I hope they can find a way to absorb sounds more before our next visit, as it was difficult to understand our waiters and to have a conversation. All in all, though, a very enjoyable dinner.

What a great place! My boyfriend and I have eaten here twice and have enjoyed it both times. The most recent time was on Christmas Day. I was glad to see that it was open because I was not looking forward to eating at TGIF or Ruby Tuesday for Christmas dinner. First, I think the best thing we like is the bread along with the trio of accompaniments you are served after you are seated. Yum! I ordered Chicken Korma which was great even though I did ask if I could get a side of spicy sauce because I wanted it a little more spicy. The spicy sauce came out hot in a little dish. It did the trick and spiced things right up. My boyfriend ordered a lamb dish and was very happy (he used some of my spicy sauce too). The Naan is delicious! I will be trying a different one each time. All around this is a great Indian restaurant. Good food, attentive service, nice ambiance. We will be going back for more.

Good food.. v e r y s l o w service. Update: slow service was due to the mad rush of people trying out Basmati when it first opened. Now the service is fine, even great at times. Try the 3rd dish in the chicken section of the menu. Also make sure to get some rotie bread along with your meal.

Ordered five entrees - all were excellent! Decent prices and very good service. Very pleased with my new Indian go to.

Wow... Never again. I came here on a Friday for the lunch buffet and I have never felt so sick after eating Indian food (and I have been to many Indian restaurants and homes of my Indian friends). The food must have been packed with a Dead Sea supply of salt! On top of that, the meats and veggies weren't even marinated or flavored as well as dishes at other Indian restaurants. So I can't help but feel like a ton of salt was added to mask the lack of real flavor. I'm giving this place two stars simply because I think there isn't a better Indian place in the area, and some dishes were fairly decent such as the dal and light cucumber salad. Other than that, I would have no reason to return here for the heavy, salty, unauthentic food.

Wow. Very good meal, and definitely will be coming back! We went here on the recommendation of a friend (whom we brought with us), and man was it worth it. Just amazing food, great service, and outstanding value. We split several apps and entrées to try a little bit of everything. The mulligatawny soup was phenomenal! I really loved it, cleaned the bowl! The samosas were huge, too, and quite tasty! The naan was perfectly cooked, hot and fresh, very good. For main courses, we split butter chicken, lamb vindaloo, and a chicken tandoor kebab. Everything was spot-on delicious, from flavor, to temperature, to presentation. Actually, I'm not the world's biggest hot-spicy food lover, so I was worried about the vindaloo, but I said make it like normal, and it was within my tolerance levels. If you do not do spicy at all, then I'd ask for them to tone it down to be safe (sounded like they would do that), or maybe try another dish, but if you're expecting nuclear spicy, you might be disappointed. Just wanted to throw that out there. This was great, though, from first to last bite. Definitely going back. I hope to try the buffet someday, too! So very glad to find a solid Indian joint out near Annapolis!

I am always on the look out for quality Indian cuisine. I did the research on YELP and heard from a few friends before making the trip to Basmati. Our party of four started with the Tandoori appetizer and Naan.Delicious! We each ordered different entrees and found all of them to be excellent. These guys are really good at giving you the heat level you want in your selection. Beautiful flavors in their sauces. Service was perfect and I love the way they decorated this place. Very good price value. Generous portions , so you are going to get a second meal out of this.

I'm usually not a lover of Indian cuisine, but this place had great food. The chicken curry had a perfect amount of spices and herbs. The restaurant itself was one of the cleanest places I've stepped into and service was excellent. Highly recommend!

I'm not sure why I haven't checked in more often because I've checked out Basmati several times and it is my hands down fav in Annapolis. The atmosphere is elegant, the tables are spaced such that you don't feel you are dining with the workmates next to you at lunch, the lighting is mellow and the service impeccable. I love that they have hot chai on the buffet for me to indulge in and their selection of buffet items are always listed on their Facebook page which is convenient and tempting! I LOVE that I can get samosas on the buffet AND a lovely tamarind sauce on the side. They have a nice selection of vegetarian dishes balanced with meat dishes and the spices are not under OR overstated. And, the BEST is that I can stay home in my jammies or comfies and they DELIVER! Seriously, who wants chinese or pizza delivery when I can have Basmati at home! Kudos to the front and back staff Basmati!

My wifes family was visiting from South India. We decided to take her parents to this restaurant after church on a Saturday for a family outing. We enter restaurant and was guided to a table. Me and my wife are a interacial couple. I am african american and she is south indian. I wish our experience was good but it was not . The waiters avoided us and we had to actually ask them to bring us water. They never asked us if we wanted buffet or to eat from menu. We just decided to eat buffet after no one came to our table for 10 minutes. The place was not too busy at all. Only a hand full of people. The waiters did not come to take away our finished plates so I actually had to pile plates on the table next to us. I just wish people would see each other as the same because we are all human and created wonderfully by God. The food was decent but the service was non existent.

I'm always pleased with my visits to Basmati. They are one of the best in the DMV. The interior is beautiful especially at night. . Cute place for a date. Staff are friendly and food is always fresh. You can order AL a carte or do buffet during lunch hours. Worth The time and trip.

The service is top notch- some what formal servers, very authentic. Chicken Vandaloo and Tandori Lamb was superb. Fresh Nann and crispy very beefy samosa. It was very reasonably priced.

Finally, a really good Indian place in Annapolis. Arrived early with the kids and there were already multiple couples with kids in the restaurant. Appetizers were good, Chicken Tikka Masala was flavorful, and the garlic naan was delicious. Gulab jamun topped it all off. Highly recommend.

My cousin and I were searching around the area to try. We decided to have Indian food. The food was delicious, I tried the Chicken Saag and oh my, it was super tasty and delicious. The service was excellent, while we asked for boxes to take home. He asked if we wanted more basmati rice to take home, of course we said yes. I would definitely come back here again.

This is as good as it gets for a $12ish Indian buffet. Food is great. Place is clean. There's enough variety. I'd be willing to pay $15-20 for this buffet.

Where I got my initiation into the world of desi delicacy. Went once and was hooked the rest of the week. It was oh so awesome. Highly recommend the Lunch buffet for newbies so you can get a full on induction into the world of YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! An array of chickens, veggies/vegan entrees to fish , beans sauces- red brown white its just outta here. Very warm waitstaff as well, what looked like a full stocked bar and my first order was takeout and as usual was lost and wanderlust and he just explained everything and once they made me wait to recook a batch of rice cause one was dry,,, i was like umm ok, thanks for letting me know. They really coudlve slapped it together and Id be none the wiser. Great cozy environment, good range of clientele and they keep the water flowing... which I rarely pay attention to, but their attention to guests is fab. ok done

Absolutely recommend the weekend lunch buffet (just make sure to take in a LARGE appetite). Plenty of variety to justify the $11.95 price tag (both vegetarian and non) with dessert and salad options. Service was prompt and courteous, with the manager bringing fresh naan to our table when needed.

  • Mari S.

I thoroughly enjoyed my salmon masala and garlic naan. I got at least three servings out of my entrée. I will definityly be back with my buddies :)

  • Nancy A.

We tried Basmati recently and we really liked it! The naan was probably some of the best we've had. Everything was prepared traditionally, so there was no guessing game if you know your way around Indian food. This isn't my favorite local Indian place, but it's very good nonetheless.

My family and I visited this place after spending the morning at the Annapolis Mall. I have eaten in quite a number of Indian places around the country and their food was great! We went for the lunch buffet (which had a good amount of selection) with my wife, 5 year old daughter, and 3 year old son. We had a great meal and the bill was very affordable as well (they only charged us for 2 adults! We will certainly be back asap - excellent !!!

I tried their lunch buffet on a Friday for the first time and it was good. The place was nicely decorated and had big windows that let good amount of sun in. Staff were helpful. Food had good taste and with the expectation of Palak Paneer and Gulab Jamun there was fair amount of variety. Spinach Samosas, Masala chai and Halwa were my most favorite part of this buffet. Will come back again!

We chanced upon this place on our way to Sandy point and boy were we lucky!! The food is awesome, the buffet is large and I have yet to meet a more gracious host! He really cares about pleasing the customers and made sure we left the place happily stuffed

If you were trapped in Annapolis with no way to leave the city limits, and were craving Indian food, this (sigh) would be your place. My husband and I had the buffet today. Most items were not even warm. That could be excused except for two things -- the buffet had just opened and the food was basically flavorless. We love indian food and have eaten better in a local gas station.

  • Autumn S.

Basmati is by far my favorite indian place in Annapolis. Yes, the decor is a little strange, yes the waitstaff is awkward. Sometimes the wait at dinner is on the long side, but it is always worth it. The food is fantastic, reasonably priced, and they give good portion sizes. The only time I've been disappointed is when I came at the tail end of the buffet hours. The food was starting to go cold and dry out, but this has only been the case once. Go early, and try everything you can. Most of all, try the goat! I was skeptical too, but it is so good! :) Also gulab jamun. They are fried dough and cottage cheese soaked in rosewater and cardamom. Just trust me. You're welcome.

  • Michele S.

Delicious! Every dish is flavorful and high-quality. The naan here is some of the best naan I've ever had. The atmosphere is pleasant, clean, and nicely decorated, and the staff is friendly and efficient. Definitely go here, your taste buds will thank you!

  • Kathy R.

Great place, stellar buffet. Many items!

    (4)
  • Nicole W.

Simply the best Indian food around! Always recommend anything off their tandoori menu - the lobster tails are well worth the splurge. My personal favorite is the spicy paneer makhani or chana masala (chickpeas). The garlic kulcha (naan) is bubbly, fluffy, delicious, and perfect for dipping in the consistently amazing sauces. Leftovers are somehow even yummier! Be prepared to wait just a little bit for your entrees... You should probably order some samosas to munch on ;) But trust me when I say it's worth any wait.

  • Raul M.

I had lunch buffet. Every dish was delectable, one more good thing was that here I got different items to try, there were many dishes which I had first time in lunch buffet in Indian restaurants. Some of the best dishes were Masala Dosa, Chai and dessert Halwa. Service was good and Place was beautiful. Price is similar to other places. I would say this place is better than other indian places in the area. Definitely try this place.

I was a part of a large group so food delays were expected however waiting over 45 mins for a waiter and over an hour for the food was ridiculous. The food was okay but the service was far less than acceptable.

My husband loves me. You know how I know? Because he took me to Basmati. If that is not love, I don't know what is. From the outside, you don't know the beautiful elegant charm that Basmati beholds within. After all, it's in a random, small strip mall that you probably have passed a million times. However, once you walk in, you know you are in for a wonderful treat. The smell of freshly simmering Indian spices lofts all the way to the intricately detailed ceiling. Low lights and spacious tables make up the ambiance. Before you even order your meal, you are satisfied with the restaurant's presentation. However, once the food comes, you are really in for satisfaction. I ordered an appetizer as an entrees since I was greedy and couldn't pick which tandoori meat I wanted. The appetizer had it all (chicken, lamb, and shrimp), so I went for the gold. I was so concentrated on my dish, that I now can't recall what my husband got outside of a spicy okra dish that was marvelous. Be forewarned though: he loves spicy food and, although he said it didn't taste very spicy when he was eating it, his body was reacting as if it was - a little bit of sweat on the brow and a quickness to his heartbeat. He didn't mind it, but some of you might. You can get it at any degree of spiciness (he told them to make it uber spicy), so just go light even if you are a nut like him. The side salads weren't much to right home about, but they were very fresh. The naan though was the BEST FREAKING NAAN OF ALL TIME! I seriously wanted to just buy buckets of it and eat it for a week, it was that good. They have a variety of different kinds of naan, but I stuck to the plain and I am happy I did. FABULOUS! While we went for date night, Basmati has a lunch buffet for under $11 during the week and under $12 on Saturday and Sunday. Guess where you will find me when the clock strikes noon? So happy I have my hubby using his Yelp app on the regular now. His planning for date nights are now unmatched! #spoiledrotten

First visit to basmati indian restaurant with friends tonight, the decoration inside are very warm and welcoming, the service was amazing, the food was awesome, the staff are very professional. We would come back will recommend to many friends. Best indian restaurant in town so far.

I will say I was expecting a lot less and got WAAAAAY more from Basmati. The previous reviews weren't glowing. So I ordered carry out and came in a few minutes early to check the place out and I'm impressed it's clean, smells amazing, staff is friendly and they have an impressive bar. I will update the review again when I come in for dinner. The manager I assume came up and asked if it would be ok if I waited a few more minutes so he could give me fresh rice. Most places would not take that kind of time and effort for a carry out order. That's impressive customer service. I will be back!

I noticed a banner on this place noting Happy Hour, I checked the web site, nothing, and yelp nothing. I stopped in and sat at the bar. I had to ask the happy hour and found a table talker that notes, $4 wine, $3.50 beer and about half a dozen small bites at $3, $6 and $9. I had a very generous glass of Chardonnay, shrimp pakoras and vegetable samosas. Three nice sauces and puppodums were served right away. The Samosas were great, pakoras kind of flabby but at $6, not bad. Not a happy hour you could frequent but worth a visit for an Indian fix at a great price. Service was painful.

This is an amazing restaurant. The lunch buffet is awesome! And NOT overpriced as many have said. $11.00 for all you can eat buffet? Really people? Go back to Taco Bell. For $11.00 you get 9 different entrees, all of which were delicious, 3 salads, rice, naan, and dessert. If you're looking for good Indian food, your search is over.

Surprisingly delicious! The buffet is a good deal but the real pleasure is in the details. The lemon pickle is delicious and the chaat masala on the cucumber salad is amazing. Those homemade touches make Basmati the real deal.

Fantastic! I have lived in Annapolis for almost 5 years and usually go into DC when I am craving great Indian cuisine. We had a huge project we were working on and wanted to order some healthy take out which is next to impossible in the area. It is usually pizza and Chinese only. If you want veggies and lean protein you have to go out. Anyway, this place is fantastic! We ordered the Chicken Tikki Masala, Chana Masala, Bhindi Masala, Alu Gobi, and the Masala Chai Tea (amazing!). Honestly, I was not expecting much with it being "local" and "delivery" - I WAS BLOWN AWAY! The gentlemen was so nice, they included extra sauces and a small taste of one of their desserts. The food was super fresh, authentic, and too hot to eat! I will be doing a lot of business with Basmati in the future! Finally, Annapolis has a great Indian restaurant! Thank you!

First time I went I thought the food was great but the real test is how good is the naan. Was definitely not impressed but I gave it a second chance and it seems like they've got it right ever since... Lunch buffet is awesome and I love that I can go on their Facebook page and see the menu posted. Thier goat dishes melt in your mouth. Hubby's new favorite restaurant!

I have been looking for good Indian food since moving to the Annapolis area and I am definitely glad I found this place!! Excellent food, a little pricey, they don't offer very many "side dishes" (aka: chick peas, spinach potato, etc.), and I wish they delivered farther than a 5 mile radius. Their paneer makani is one of the best I have tried!! Overall, I would highly recommend and staff is very friendly!! :)

I have to update to 5 stars because every time I go back, the food gets better. Also, their buffet is delicious has their good labeled VEGAN. It's awesome! And I've never met nicer people. The buffet also includes chai, so you don't have to buy a drink. One of my favorite places in Annapolis.

I am a vegetarian and I love this place. Definitely vegetarian friendly and the food is fantastic. I love spices and spicy food so if you are the same go here! They post their menu on Facebook so you can check beforehand. Service wasn't as good as I hoped; I had to wait awhile to get water And meet waiter for first time and a long wait for the check. Other than that this place is great!

First time ordering from here...so this might be a "too-soon-to-judge" scenario... New Year's Eve party needed some Indian cuisine so a friend recommended this place and we ordered A BUNCH of meals. We expected it to taste good, and for the most part it did. However, they did not include side sauces, overcooked the rice (how is that possible at a place like this??) and the portions were insanely small for the prices we paid. I enjoyed my Chicken Makhani but pulled out numerous bones and was disappointed that there was more sauce than substance. Too bad! Annapolis needs a solid, evenly priced, Indian restaurant.

We recently ate at Basmati for the first time and were pleasantly surprised. The food was very good, the wait staff was accommodating, and the surroundings were very clean. We had never seen chai tea offered as part of a buffet before -- a pleasant surprise. Also worth noting is the fact that our clothing did not absorb the odors of the food during our visit. We love Indian food, but some restaurants do not vent their kitchens as efficiently as others. Basmati allowed US to enjoy our food -- not people we passed on the street hours later!

Our favorite Indian restaurant in the area. Consistently great food coupled with tremendous service keeps us coming back. Excellent for carryout too.

Amazing! The manager is so kind, the food is amazing, and the space is cozy. We are so thrilled to have this near us in Crofton. We've started going on an almost weekly basis & it's become out go-to spot!

I'm a huge fan of Indian food. I have been here twice, and will be back. The first time I came here was with my parents during lunch time. We did the lunch buffet, definitely worth it! They have lots of options and since it's all you can eat? I went back to the buffet several times, much to my parents embarrassment. The second time was with my boyfriend. Although the service was a little slow (we went on a Saturday night, a few weeks before Christmas, right when the dinner rush was hitting..), the food, as usual, was excellent. I ordered the Chicken Korma and asked for it medium. Amazing. My boyfriend ordered Lamb Bhuna and said his was good, but liked the taste of mine better. We also had garlic Naan bread with our meal which was excellent. My tummy was in such a happy place by the end of our meal that I could have fallen right into a food coma in the booth we were seated in. Very happy with Basmati. Will be back again!

It's missing the Indian spices, low budget quality food , constantly you need to let them know to fill up the Buffett , no one check on food run out or shortage , you got to remind them during your meal . Service lousy . Never again .

Went with a friend for the lunch buffet today. Not too impressed. Guess bc I have been to some amazing Indian buffets. Service was good but not too impressive. The buffet lacks in selection compared to others I've had. No chicken tiki masala (my fav dish) at the buffet instead they have butter chicken, but when I asked they made it for us and brought to our table, which was nice. The naan was good, nice and chewy dough. I was disappointed that they only had one type of curry. Salad was ok, pretty fresh. The green cilantro sauce is usually my fav, wasnt that great here. The tandoori chicken was awesome tho. Great price though. $25 for 2 people (and a kid) and we ate plenty. Overall it was okay just can't compare to jewel of India or royal taj.

Woot Indian Food in my hood! I'm glad to see another Indian restaurant here in Annapolis. The more ethnic restaurants in this town, the better! So this place is in a small shopping center near the towne center on route 2. If you are heading north on route 2 (I think) you might have to make a U turn to get to it. There is a median on route 2 which makes it really annoying for us to get to this shopping center. The samosas were excellent! These things are always an Indian food favorite. You get two in an order and each of them are pretty big. So be prepared to share, unless you plan on having samosas for your meal. The Lamb Biryani was excellent. Just the perfect amount of spice! The lamb tasted very fresh and tender and the basmati rice was aromatic. I would have been very dissappointed if they didn't have good rice. All in all I think this is a great place. I will have to keep them in mind for carry out. Its too bad that they don't deliver, because that would be TOO awesome!

Yummmmm!!!!!!!! The all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is a really great deal. $11.95 for as much Indian food as I can stuff in my face? Yes please. Not the hugest selection but it had all the classics and everything was delicious; Tandoori Chicken, fabulous naan, Chicken Makhani, keema mutter... It also gave me the chance to try a few new dishes like the Paneer Chili (sooooooooo good!!!) and carrot pudding (weird but totally deliciously satisfying). Service was courteous and prompt and the manager even came by our table to see how everything was. Sadly now that I'm vegan Indian food is pretty much a no-go for me but I encourage all omnivores to check out Basmati. Just make sure to go starving because you'll want to go back for seconds. And thirds. And...

Update to last review. After posting the review the manager contacted us and apologized, he also sent a gift certificate. We used that tonight and were pleasantly surprised. The food was ready when we arrived and very tasty. Great job Basmati and way to address a customer issue. We will be back!

UPDATED REVIEW 8/28/2015 : In the past couple of months (yes, it took us that long to visit again) we've eaten at Basmati 4 times. Each and every time we were quickly greeted at the door by a friendly smiling face. We were seated promptly at clean tables. The decor has changed some since the first time we visited. There is more of a balance and elegance to the place, while also being more inviting and comfortable. It has not been crowded when we've gone, though the lunch buffet is busier than dinner. Service has been amazing three of the four recent visits, but even the fourth visit had very good service (I assume the waiter was new). There's always a plethora of staff around to offer assistance. We've reordered the Assorted Vegetable Appetizer on each visit and each time its been delicious- not at all like the tasteless overly oily items we had on our first visit. I'm in love with their Aloo Gobi- I keep ordering it with different spice levels (they offer it in mild, medium and spicy) and its been great each time. I think we've ordered every vegan friendly dish on the menu at this point and been happy with each dish. Even the basmati rice was nothing like the dry stuff we'd had on our first visit. I really need to mention again how great the service has been. The staff knows exactly whats vegan friendly and is quick to make helpful suggestions and substitutions. I don't know if our first visit was just on a very, very, very off day or if they have changed managers or had different training, but this is an entirely different Basmati than the first one I visited and I'm happy to recommend it...and return! ORIGINAL REVIEW 6/21/2013 : We tried this place out yesterday. Upon entering, we were sort of greeted by an unsmiling man who seemed almost put out to have to seat us. After being seated we had time to check out our surroundings. Some of the decor looks almost elegant, but paired with the tacky black velvet paintings, the elegance factor gets knocked down a few pegs. It was very dark...perhaps to make up for the stains on the white table cloths. We arrived at 5:30 and there was only one other occupied table, but every booth was set up with three small trays of dips. Who knows how long they sat there. Would've maybe been a little more hygienic to dish those out after people had actually been seated. We left at 6:30 and only two other tables had been filled. We ordered the Assorted Vegetarian Appetizers. This consisted of five pieces of overly fried vegetable pakoras which had lost all of their flavor and one small samosa. I suspect the samosa had been frozen at some point. We ordered two entrees- Alu Methi and Baigan Bharta. They were served with a giant bowl of somewhat dry and unappetizing lukewarm jasmine rice. The rice had the taste and consistency of rice that had been pre-made and stored in the fridge. We both tried a spoonful of both dishes. The Alu Methi was very, very dry. The potatoes tasted like they had been frozen and there was very little seasoning. The Baigan Bharta was mushy, overly sweet AND overly spicy. We ate the spoonful of Alu Methi we each took, but left the Baigan Bharta on our plates. A waiter came to take our plates and asked if we wanted to-go boxes. We said no. He commented that we had not eaten much and asked if everything was ok. We politely informed him that we had not cared for the dishes. He took the plates away, did not offer a replacement dish and we were billed full price for the uneaten meals. Several hours later my stomach was still turning from the very little I had eaten. We won't be back.

Really wish I could give Basmati 4.5 stars instead of just 4, but due to the limitations of Yelp, that's not yet possible... Went to Basmati with my husband for dinner on Saturday 2/11. Admitedly, neither of us is very familiar with Indian food so we didn't know what to expect, but we were excited to try something new. The place was packed and we didn't have a reservation, so we put our name on the list and took a seat at the bar. The decor is beautiful and very welcoming. Here is my one complaint begins - the service needs to be improved. The bartender (there is only 1 for a very large and crowded bar area) seemed uninterested in serving us and took his dear time taking orders and making drinks. It was about 10 minutes before he even acknowledged that we were there. I noticed however, that several groups of people that walked in after us that he seemed to know and/or was friends with got service before we did. Basmati should do themselves a favor and get a new bartender! After we did finally get our drinks, we were both pleasantly surprised at how good they were. I tried the Mango Lassi and my husband had a dirty martini - both were perfect! We had to wait quite a while to be seated, and it turned out that the hostess "skipped" our name by accident and we had to wait an additional 15-20 minutes due to her error, but the wait was well worth it... Once we were finally seated, we were greeted by a friendly waiter (who I think was one of the owners). He offered some great suggestions on what items to try. Glad we took his suggestions because the food was FANTASTIC! I had Chicken Tikka Masala and my husband had a lamb dish. We also ordered a side of the Naan and it was sooo good! The tikka masala had such complex and fresh flavors that I was sad when I started getting full because I didn't want to stop eating it!! I couldn't wait for lunch the next day to have the left overs :) My husband said that his lamb dish was also perfect and he really enjoyed every bite of it. It was obvious that the owners/employees really cared about their guests and wanted to make sure everything was taken care of, but they were simply too understaffed to handle the huge crowd of people on a Saturday night. At the end of our meal, the owner stopped by to chat and informed us that his bus boys had not shown up for work and that was why they were scrambling a little bit to cover all of the tables. New place, totally understandable and I won't hold it against them! He was very appologetic for us having to wait to be seated and for the somewhat slow service. He seemed genuinely interested in how he could improve things, and with that attitude, they will be successful! And so, it is because of the owners true and genuine interest in improving the service that I rated Basmati on the higher side even though there is definite room for improvement. Bottom line - the food is a home run and with a few adjustments in their service (and a new bartender), Basmati will be a 5 star etablishment in my book! We plan to go back again... and very soon!

It was a pleasant surprise to see another Indian restaurant in Annapolis. I tried the other one a few years ago and never went back. So far I've tried the Chicken Makhani, Saag, Vindaloo, and Jalfrezi. All were great with lots of flavor. I would skip the Mulligatawny soup, it just lacked flavor. The Vegetable Samosa's dough inside was undercooked. I'll definitely return but will be skipping the appetizers and soup. Service is touchy. Some tables get a lot of attention and have their drinks refilled frequently, some don't.

The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is that it's a little bit expensive, especially for a lunch buffet....plus, the fact that it's more expensive on Sunday is just silly. The food for the buffet is awesome, though. They've got a great selection of vegetarian and meat curries and dishes, as well as fresh naan, salad and sauces. Definitely the best Indian food in the Annapolis area.

    (4)
  • Duane S.

The food here is very bland. The Mulligatawny Soup had no flavor at all. People the the next table also made the same observation. I had the Baingain Bharta and it was sweet with very little spice. The service was just okay. I will have to try somewhere else next time. This won't be on my list.

Great restaurant, great service, great food. Lunch buffet is very affordable and always fresh and replenished, variety of choices. Many vegan and veggie options as well! My dad and my boyfriend and I LOVE coming here!

This was my first Indian cuisine experience and it was really good. The buffet was awesome with lots of choices. My only complaint was that there were a lot of moments where the buffet was pretty empty and I had to wait for food to be refilled. Other then that, I loved it! The veggie patties, naan, and okra dish on the buffet were my favorites :)

My wife and I have been here twice and we think it is absolutely great. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because this is the only we've had Indian food so I can't compare to other places just yet. The staff was very friendly and they were well aware that it was our first visit. It is pricey for us but for the residents of Annapolis I'm sure it is considered rather affordable. The meals were a pretty good sized portion though so no complaints there. We were interested in what the other things on the consisted of and our server, who just so happened to be the manager had no problem bringing out a couple of plates to sample the other items which was free of charge. We went back for our anniversary and came to the conclusion that this place is one of our favorites.

We've had Indian buffet from Monterey CA to Columbia MD and everywhere in between, and Basmati is, by far, the best we've had. #1 where else can you get Indian buffet on a Saturday? Nowhere...but here. #2 the food is great...Tandoori grill was the best I've had, plenty of variety, relishes, salad, Gulab Jamun....Gulab Jamun. I never see that at buffet. #3 the staff. Very friendly and attentive. Water filled, plates removed promptly, food fresh and amply filled. As we left several of the waiters said "have a good day!". This is a great place, we'll make this a monthly visit..at least.

First great Indian food I've been able to find in Annapolis!! Went here with my girlfriends family and my god is this place good! We tried a sampling of several dishes (Chicken Tika Masala, Lamb Vindaloo, and several others) all of which were fan-freaking-tastic! I'm new to Indian food, but this place is the freaking bomb. We also got some of the mango lassi (sp) which was divine. Lastly: Get the goulab jammin (sp) desert to finish off your meal. They're fried balls of cottage cheese in some sort of syrup. They are so rich and delicious its not even funny. You won't be disappointed going here.

Some of the reviews made us a bit leery but we decided to give Basmati a go anyway. Long and short, Basmati was ok. Not great, and certainly not awful. Staff was friendly, attentive w/o being overly so. Food was presented well, in an appropriate amount of time. But the food was a bit under seasoned and under spiced. We had a mixed tandoori grill and a Lamb vindaloo with a side order of garlic naan. The nann was terrific, the other entrees a bit bland. I know this is very subjective, but Indian food should have a bit of a kick. The waiter asked about the level of spice we wanted. Our answer, medium. Next time, we'll try "spicey" and see how that goes.

I see no reason to skimp with 5 stars if I find an outstanding place, and this is one of them. Weren't sure what to expect but we found it truly first rate, and not all that pricey for what you get. Maybe it just satisfied my long yearning for Indian food near where we live, finally. We found no flaws with this place, the food was the best, with a good selection of Indian favorites. And the service was so friendly and helpful, just unbelievable. Quite elegant-looking too.

Annapolis needs more restaurants like Basmati. I've been twice since they opened for dinner. My favorite hands down is the Baingan Bharta (eggplant) and also the Okra w/ Onions and Tomatoes. Decent selection of whiskey at the bar is a bonus. This place would be great for happy hour. Little pricey but service was outstanding and if you like Indian food this is your restaurant.

Janet and I had dinner at Basmati again last night. This time we shared the Tandoori Lamb Chops and Chicken Saag with naan and riati. All the bugs seem to have been worked out of service and the food is as good as ever. The lamb was excellently cooked and the spinach in the saag was outstanding. Basmati is an excellent addition to the Annapolis food scene and has rocketed to the top of pack.

Highly recommended. Enjoyed a terrific Sunday brunch here earlier today. The food was delicious, particularly the Punjabi Kadi. The Tandoor chicken was as moist and flavorful as any I've ever had. I prefer more heat in my Indian food, but for a buffet geared to the American palate, even the obligatory Tikki Massala balanced richness and spiciness well. The staff was very welcoming and warm, without exceeding the fragile bounds of good tact. They circulated briskly throughout the dining room, delivering fresh naan and refilling glasses, which is a pet preference of mine (I hold that in restaurants with anything like decent service, my water glass should never be empty). Interior decor was low-key, elegant, and smoothly finished, with comfortable chairs and tasteful table appointments. Restrooms was freshly renovated and clean, which is sometimes wanting in Indian restaurants. Finally, an alternative to India in Annapolis, which is a fine enough place, to be sure, but which has long basked in the absence of any competition.

We visited this restaurant at my daughters request for her 26 birthday celebration last night. Basmati is okay, but not okay enough to ever come back. Service was so-so. A friendly smile would have went further from the real serious looking older (waiters) Bluetooth wearing gentlemen! Most of the food was very bland and lacked the flavor I'd expect from typical yummy curry dishes. Also, most Indian places will ask how hot or spicy you would like your dish. We got very mild and minimum flavored food. I will however, say the Lamb chops and the ice cream were tasty... Overall it was just so-so at best and slightly overpriced. This was not a real bad experience, but not good enough to return for the lamb chops and Indian ice cream only.

Terrific buffet that has different selections every visit. An amazing taste of India at a great price. We have never bothered withbsit down menu ordering because the buffet hours are perfect for our schedule. The staff are very kind and attentive to repeat customers, and on a few occasions have brought out dishes to my family that they knew we liked (but weren't out on the buffet that day). Try the Aloo dishes, Masalas, and save room for the desserts that include Suji Halwah and Kheer. This is our favorite quick and reasonable pick for ethnic in town. Nothing fancy. ..just eat and smile. I never expected to LOVE a turnip or okra (bindhi) dish.

First, I am from out of town and have been spoiled with some great Indian food (Bombay House in Salt Lake City, Utah). Basmati is good, but not good enough to come back. The food was a little bland and lacked the flavor you'd expect from typical curry dishes. Also, most Indian places will ask how hot you would like your dish. Not so here. We got very mild and prefer hot or very spicy. The service was equally as bland. Overall it was just so-so.

This place was awesome when it first opened but the quality of the food has gone WAY WAY downhill since those first few months. So now we're back to driving 30 minutes to Columbia or Baltimore whenever that craving for really good Indian food hits.

My wife and I had dinner on New Year's Eve. The food and wine were excellent. We enjoyed the Lamb Karahi and Chicken Saag. Very good service. Good atmosphere, although the background music could have been better (play some authentic Indian music). Convenient location. Reasonable prices. We'll be back!

Having just moved to Annapolis I was curious about this place and craving Indian. We ordered three vegetarian entrees -- aloo gohbi, dal makhani, and sag paneer. Our expectations were not super high, even thought we've had great Indian in places like New York, London, and yes - even Gaithersburg. This place disappointed on every count. We asked for 'spicy' when they inquired how hot to make the food, but every dish was muddy tasting and underseasoned -- I've never salted Indian food in my life and had to salt the dal -- and the bread was also flat and not the usually puffy naan you get hot from the tandoor. Aloo gohbi is such a standard dish - cauliflower and potato -- but they managed to make it dry and flavorless. Sag paneer is usually jewel green colored with delicious, fluffy squares of cheese in it, but this version was almost brown, mushy, and the cheese was bland and hard to chew. On the positive side, the staff I dealt with were very nice and the atmosphere inside was pleasant. I'm sorry the food was so poor, we were looking forward to having a good Indian restaurant nearby.

So the Chili Chicken and Naan were incredible however, nothing else was good enough to write home about. I felt like there was not enough selection and it was overpriced for a lunch buffet. Perhaps they can skip the white table clothes and reduce the price from $10.95pp to $8.95 and then maybe it would be worth it. If my colleague want to go there again, I might be inclined but it is not my first choice for value or taste!

Nice Indian restaurant. Relaxing decor, smells great inside. Service was fast and Super attentive. Tried the Naan with lamb, Chicken Tika Masala (meat was a little dry, but sauce was great), and the Alu Gobi. Even though I don't care for lamb, I really enjoyed the lamb Naan. My water glass was alway full. The waitstaff offered more basmati rice twice. The prices were decent, and I can't wait to go back to the lunch buffet.

I will not be back. I've only been here once and had the buffet. The variety was sorely lacking - 2 chicken dishes and the rest vegetarian. On top of the, it was the blandest Indian food I've ever had. Those giving this place 4 and 5 stars have never had great Indian food. The staff all look like they are ready to jump off a roof. I sat at the bar and not once did anyone check to see if I needed anything. When I asked for another drink there was a look of shock followed by a look of annoyance.

What a horrible experience this was. We got there to be quoted a 30-45 minute wait so we selected the bar area which was completely deserted upon our arrival. The first clue that there was a problem should have been the 40 minutes that it took for our appetizer to arrive. After another 40 minutes (and another round of drinks) we still didn't have any food so we decided to leave. A total of around 90 minutes and no entrees.....totally unacceptable by any measure and our waitstaff at the bar seemed totally unconcerned that we had been sitting there for over an hour. I won't be back.

Delicious food, good serving sizes. Quiet place with decent service and upscale atmosphere (candle and real rose on each table). Server was adequate, but could have been more attentive and personable. Garlic naan bread was amazing. Bengha bahrta (mashed eggplant) was filling and tasty. Chicken tikka masala was spiced well, but the meat was a slightly odd texture (rubbery cubes, maybe over-cooked?). Each dish was a shallow bowl about 6 inch diameter, plus a hefty portion of rice. $28 bottle of table wine. In and out in under an hour. Their sign says "free delivery," which i look forward to trying. Also the lunch buffet is on my list to try.

My fiance and I went to dinner here last night. I have had Indian food before, but he had never! Let me just say that we both left very full and satisfied! We had an appetizer- the tandoori platter. It was fabulous, although the price was a little high for the actual serving size. We will probably stick to ordering a soup for next time. For our meals, I had the chicken korma and he had the chicken curry. Both were divine. We also ordered some keema naan- so good!! Service was excellent and the atmosphere was very classy and romantic. You better believe this will become one of regular spots from here on out!
