The service was the best and the food even better. The waiter was very informative and didn't up-sell me, however I did up-sell myself and tried a lot of different items. So worth it... Must try the Crab Cakes... They are the best I've ever had... That is a bold statement, but it's true... If I was going to die and it was my last meal, I would want this crab cake a slice of their delux pizza. Ok, maybe two crab cakes. I will fly back for the food. Thank you for a great experience.

This rating is for the crab cakes and the pizza. This is Box Hill Pizzeria after all, so I also ordered a pie. After hearing everyone north of Baltimore rave about Box Hill, I finally gave it a shot. The crab cakes were solid. I didn't find them to be anywhere near the best in Baltimore and the price was a little on the high side. I tried both the broiled and fried preparations. There was a decent amount of lump crab meat and the seasoning was pretty light allowing the crab to remain the focus. I was very disappointed to find canned mushrooms on my pizza. As a rule, I usually won't return to a pizzeria that can't bother to use fresh ingredients. The pizza itself was decent with plenty of cheese. Bottom line, this is just an average neighborhood pizza place with a solid crab cake. Calling it "world famous" is a bit of an exaggeration... Maybe "Harford County Famous," but that's even a stretch.

Easily the best crab cake I've ever had. I couldn't telling it was the buttery meat or seasoning. It didn't have a heavy old bay taste. Just good, buttery crab

Little hole in the wall just got to get past the window. Portion size is good and overall that the quality was exceptional. Do not let the pizzeria confuse you crabcakes are definitely delicious! One drawback is the cost, little pricey. Would definitely recommend.

Visiting the area and craving MD crab... Lumpy crab meat in every bite. Delicious!!

Heard great reviews on the "famous crab cakes," and, although they have "Pizzeria" in the name, I had high expectations. Their crab cakes were too wet for my taste, and I will stick to Edgewater Inn or Blue Dolphin. Did not get an opportunity to try the pizza, but it did look like very good pizza. Will have make another trip for pizza and update my review. The atmosphere is very relaxed and family oriented - nothing fancy. We had $30 entrees served on foam plates with plastic ware. No cocktails, beer and basic wine offerings only.

I was driving from the Baltimore airport to Delaware and happened to stop in for the crab cakes (based on fellow Yelper's reviews). They're seasonal, but soft shell crabs were available and we took advantage! Delicious! We had the soft shell crabs with crab cake filling, best of both worlds! I had a weekend of crab cakes and my meal at Green Hill was by far the best tasting and best value. Also tried the cream of crab soup. Again, sampled many versions across several restaurants and this was the best!

Great service, great crab-cake, got the two cake order and you Yelpers did not lie! I went last night around 8:45 the guys were great behind the counter, got the broiled and fried to figure out what I liked best. Had to fly back to Atlanta early or I would have gone back!

They have AWESOME crab cakes but they are a little pricey. I haven't tried anything else from there but the place is always packed. I suggest calling ahead to order pick up or you'll be waiting awhile.

Pizza is so-so, it's thick and I like more sauce. This place is hopping so don't be surprised if you need to wait for a table but the staff is awesome and they will fit you in quickly. Now, the rave of this place is hands down the crab cakes. One of the best and arguably the best and they deliver locally or will ship them anywhere. Crab cake bragging rights is something Maryland restaurants boast but seldom back up. Box Hill backs it up!

Best crab cakes in the area. That's all I've had here and I feel all I need to have. When new folks are in town and have never had a proper crab cake I get a few from here to show them what a real mD crab cake should taste like.

I had been hearing about the BoxHill crab cakes for a long time so finally tried it. It did not live up to my expectations. First, the good -- the crab cake is plenty large and it is indeed filled with a lot of crab. So big points for that. However, the crab cake was very creamy inside, almost like a crab imperial topping. Too creamy for my taste. Also, the flavor was very bland. I'm a big fan of letting the flavor of crab speak for itself, but it definitely needed a dash of salt or Old Bay to bring out the flavor. Toward the end of my meal, I actually got tired of eating it. I did not like the styrofoam plate and plastic fork. Cheap plates and plastic are fine at a dive BBQ counter place, but this is a sit-down restaurant with waitresses. Real plates and utensils are required. Also, this lunch was pricey. Crab cake and fries and an iced tea added up to $25 with tip. That's a lot of money for an average meal served on styrofoam. The servers were very friendly.

Nice low key meal. The crab cakes are excellent (but pricey). You're better off with the rockfish, pizza, and burgers, which are satisfying. Servings are LARGE so order sparingly.

The Crabcakes are decent ... But the thing that catches me off guard isn't that this place charges you $18.49 for 1 Crabcake, store bought fries, coleslaw, and 2 Crackers ... ... The thing that caught me off guard is the lack of customer service that this place displayed. Even though you are paying a decent amount for a crab cake they serve their food on styrofoam plates, their coleslaw in plastic containers, and when I asked for a cup of water I was told, "... It's self-serve here" (then she turned away) This place is over priced and lacks the service of a sit down restaurant!

12/26/14 I give this **UPDATE** with a heavy heart I always was a 5/5 fan. All my friends were. Read my previous review. We were at a Funeral Home viewing tonight on Bel Air Rd. I convinced 2 of my friends to go here for the Crab Cakes. PACKED. It was maybe 5:30pm? WE got 2 broiled CC, small Greek Salad, Fried Rockfish Strips w/Texas Pedal Sauce, Cream of Crab soup. Shared everything This review is for the CC ONLY. Everything else was VERY VERY good. I could drink that Greek Salad Dressing. I was actually embarrassed about the CC, because i had hyped them up so much. There were so few lumps, some shredded meat and so much filler. They were pretty bad. My only hope is that they got so busy they tried to "thin out" what meat they had to get through the night. If so, i'd rather they just made them like they had before, and just run out. I REALLY REALLY hope the owner isn't trying to make more $$ by making them like this now. He has the crowds. So, crowds + cheaper product = more money in his pocket. Like i said, i REALLY hope this isn't the case. It's not a seasonal issue, because i have gotten them all year round and have always loved them. Maybe it was the batch we had? Who knows? My plan is to go back when they are slower. Like off holiday, after lunch and before dinner and see what they are like then. If they are the same as they were tonight, i'm done I hope the owner sees this and gives me some type of answer, because i always was a huge fan. This was my favorite CC not only in the Balto/Metro area, but anywhere. It was a very disappointing evening CC-wise

The crab cakes are just: wow. I am in town on business and decided to try some of the local cuisine. I ordered the daily crab cake special and it came with fries, garlic bread, and cole slaw. The sides were nothing special, but the broiled crab cake was exquisite. It was rather large in size, and contained delicious chunks of crab within. Usually I'm worried about portions when it comes to crab cakes, but between the sides and the large cake I left full. They also have a soda fountain with dozens of Coke products to choose from, so that added a little variety regarding drinks. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a really good crab cake at not ridiculously expensive prices. They also offer plenty of other Italian food, and the meatball sub we ordered was pretty good.

we were in for a Lacrosse tourney and were looking for an authentic crab cake and yes we found it. Friday night when we got in we had went to Fells street area and ate at Rip tide by the Bay and had there crab cake dinner, now it was pretty good but not even close to Box Hill Crab Cakes!!! They were filled with lump crab and were delicious, warning only get one though they are big and filling, what was a big surprise was the salad as simple as it was awesome with there homemade dressing and the éclair for desert was big enough to share with 4 people.

Box Hill Pizzeria looks like a typical pizzeria, but upon walking in you see it's packed with customers. Sure, there's a takeout counter on one side and a separate dining room on the other side. Like many pizzerias, if you want a drink refill, you take you cup up to the machine and refill it. What's not typical about this pizzeria is that I don't think anyone goes there for the pizza. Their specialty is crab cakes. In eastern Maryland, a crab cake place isn't especially uncommon, but I've yet to find one that has crab cakes as good as Box Hill. They give you a good sized portion served either baked or fried with almost no filler and huge pieces of lump crabmeat. They also have uncooked crab cakes available for takeout along with instructions to cook them at home and will even ship frozen ones. To put into perspective how good their crab cakes are, I live 90 minutes away and I've done the 3 hour round trip to get them. I'm sure their other menu items that are more typical for a pizza place are good too, but I've never tried them. I heard about the crab cakes, tried them and haven't looked at the rest of the menu since!

Can't pop into MD with out leaving with a crab something or nother. Outside is very deceiving as it's in a pizzeria. Inside is lined with typical pizzeria style booths and some tables in the middle. Service was very friendly and attentive. We both ordered the crab cakes. Out came enormous cakes - if I had to guess 85% crab and not much filler. My only gripe was that they had diced red pepper in them. (I hate cooked red pepper in anything)

Crab cakes were pretty good, but the atmosphere was not great. I thought it was a seafood restaurant.. It's really a pizzeria. All the plates were Styrofoam. Have you ever heard of a $25 crab cake meal on a Styrofoam plate?

Box Hill is the gold standard against which all Maryland crab cakes are measured. I've heard "... almost as good as Box Hill" and "... not nearly as good as Box Hill," but I have NEVER heard BETTER than Box Hill. If you think you have that place, private message me. I want to try it. (I only rate two places as "almost" *) Lump backfin crab meat. The right amount of filler. I prefer mine broiled on crackers. I ask to have them cooked "all the way through" or else the batter inside is not firm - but most seem to like it that way because that is the "default" way of serving them. The place is typical pizzeria ambiance. Go get your own soda from the fountain in a styrofoam cup and formica tables. Paper or plastic plates. The subs (cheese steak) are good. The pizza ok. The soups, both Maryland crab and cream of crab would be very good if they weren't so salty. The salads are ice-berg-y. But those are not the reasons why you would go to Box Hill. Crab cakes. Broiled. On crackers. And an extra to go. [ * My two runners up are Timbuktu near BWI and the Red Star Tavern in Fells Point. Message me if you think you've found a legitimately better crabcake than Box Hill - ANYWHERE.] MSO

Bf and his mom took me to this establishment because they wanted me to experience a good cheesesteak... I was so jet-lagged that I didn't even know what to get, but I was craving pizza... Our server was very nice and welcoming especially to me, being from Phoenix... She explained a lot about the restaurant and it's beginning... He got the cheesesteak with onion rings She got the crab cake I got my slice of pepperoni pizza Of course they ended up shoving some of their food down my mouth Haha The cheesesteak was really, really good and we were glad that she offered the hot peppers on it... The crab cake was amazing It was what I had imagined Maryland crab cake would be like The pizza really surprised me, it was great All in all, my experience here was very exceptional. The food was great, the server was great, and the ambience was delicious

Really pleased!! Crab cakes were sweet & delicious! 100% jumbo lump crab meat! Better than Philips, Faidely's or the Robert Morris Inn!! Also, the staff were helpful & delightful!

I hadn't been to this place since high school. I wasn't impressed than and I'm not impressed now. The crab cakes are OK but the fries and slaw were ordinary. I'm pretty sure the only reason people in Hazzard talk the place up is because it's one of the few places around that isn't a cookie cutter corporate chain restaurant. Service was pretty slow as well. I was going to give it 1 star but due to the sheer hilarity of the autographed wrestler pictures on the wall I'll bump it up to 2

I'm not often compelled to write a review from a local take out joint - but I was after Box Hill. - I have been a recent transplant to the Abingdon area and have been searching the local area for good food. Box Hill reviews are many and boast various things...I haven't tried them all - but I have tried enough... We ordered the Broiled Crab Cake Platter - and the Md. Crab Soup - with a Italian Sub on the side. Were the crab cakes the best we ever had...no - but they were good. There was just the right mixture of breading to crab - the crab was delicious with plentiful hunks of solid backfin - the only criticism was they seemed under seasoned - just a little salt and pepper, or some old bay. Man they were good...but not great, we really missed the seasoning. The Md. Crab soup was really good too - tasted home made, cant wait to taste the cream of crab. The Italian Submarine was awesome - I rate many places on the Italian Submarine...and Box Hill's was the best in the area. It was packed with meat...and it tasted awesome. Really this review was for the sub - it was really good. We will be going back to Box Hill - We would eat at Box Hill much more except they do not deliver...: (

Reviewing the Crab Cakes in particular. The lump meat in ours was incredible but also expected of a good high end Maryland crab cake. The taste was well below average. Id call these more of a Vegas or L.A. crabcake than a Bawlmer cake. It was very "herbby" with chopped peppers and parsley. Om top of that, both were under cooked. 3 stars for the excellent lump meat, 2 stars for the execution. Won't be back for these cakes, maybe the rockfish...

Best crab cakes on the East Coast! One 8oz crab cake cooked to perfection... they even deliver all over the states! Great service, helpful, friendly, and courteous. Didn't get a chance to try the deserts

I keep telling myself I am not going there again but things don't always work out that way. Re the crab cakes, just okay, found areas of cake batter consistency, not fully cooked and just okay taste, nothing great. However there was a generous helping of crab meat. Disappointed with the gyro on pita, they do not even use tzatziki sauce, just threw on a dollop of sour cream. I thought these people were Greek. Don't know what kind of meat it was... expected lamb. Frozen French fries, no taste coleslaw, plastic utensils House dressing on greek salad excellent. Appetizer of crab meat on a pretzel mushy and tasted like lesser quality of crab.

My step dad heard about the restaurant and had been wanting to go for some time.. Though I live down the street I've never done. I went with my mother and step father and 2 girls. It's very very casual in there .. Which is fine. We had a pretty good variety of food.. Stuffed rockfish, crab cakes, stuffed shrimp and pizza. The pizza was really the best item that we had .. Ooh and the garlic bread. Everything else was so very overrated. The crab cakes were a nice size but we're so lacking in seasoning. They bring old bay to the table but the crab cakes needed salt or something. The same for the rockfish and the stuffed shrimp. Also they use a seasoning in the crab cake that I am not so sure about. They were not disgusting and certainly not delicious. On a scale of 1-10 I would give them a 4 or 5?? I'm not really sure how this place has a reputation for some of the best crab cakes. The prices were ok. Considering some places in charge so much more .. The platter price was between 21 and 23.. Total bill was 95. Just wasn't worth it..

They call this place a pizzeria. It has a stereotypical pizzeria menu, but it is mediocre at best. I frequent Box Hill for 3 items: crab cakes, shrimp salad subs, and homemade cannolis. They serve the beat legitimate Maryland crab cake in the state. Jumbo lump crab without filler. The shrimp salad is Old Bay heavy and comes in piles. The homemade cannolis are worth the stop by themselves. Lots of cinnamon and chocolate chips. You can get a great meal here, but be ready to pay for it. The beat items can get costly.

Excellent crab cakes, on the expensive side 15$ for one crabcake...but it's rather big, about 6oz. Go for the crabcake specials. Delicious!!!

The crab cakes taste like crab cakes. And that's pretty much it. Not a spin or a twist of their own, just crab cakes!

Best Crab Cakes I have ever had! No fillers-ALL JUICY MEATY CRAB MEAT! Made fresh every day. I ordered the traditional crab cake meal, but i also got to try their crab stuffed pretzel sandwich! Both were soooooo delicious. you must get the crab stuffed pretzel, it is out of this world! They also have a house salad dressing, and you have to try it. I will definitely come back here to try their other entrees, they have soft shell crabs as well :) Definitely a hidden gem! 5 stars for the win!!!

absolutely superb crab cakes - a work of art! expensive, but definitely worth it. Allow time to savor every bite. the demand for crab cakes is high, so there may be a wait, if they are busy. the home made salad dressing is like none other I have ever had. so good they sell it to go. the otherwise great experience was marred, however, by the home made soup, which has way too much pepper! A surprisingly amateur mistake for an otherwise gifted chef. they have beer but it must be a secret, as it is not on the menu. I will definitely go back, but will avoid the soup.

Hidden hole in the wall with the best crab cakes I've ever had! I'm a Michigander, so truthfully I don't get fresh crab often. But I used to live in San Francisco Bay Area and this is leaps and bounds better than anything I ever had there! The crab cake was so fluffy and buttery with crab meat. It was more like a crab patty than a cake, because I couldn't taste any filler. I've been dreaming about this place ever since I had it and I wish I could frequent it on the regular. Alas, I will have to wait until next time I go east, but I'd make a special trip for this place even if I was a state away. Yuuuuummm

I'm not sure if I came on an off night but I was not pleased with my crab cake at all it was very disappointing and nothing special, it was actually fishy ...gross. My favorite place to get crab cakes is Greek village I think they have the best in town.

Not sure why everyone raves about their crab cakes (too much filler, not enough meat), much better options in the greater area. Full disclosure I am an import from Upstate NY but I prefer to make the trip to G&M south of Baltimore for my crab cakes.

I love staring at all the picture of celebrities while I wait for this excellent pizza. This was the first place my wife and I ordered pizza from when we moved to the area, and after trying several pizza places, it's one of two that we keep coming back to. I love how busy the place is. It tells me what the public thinks of a restaurant.
