Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Solid. Actually really solid for New England. Not sure why I'm not giving it five stars..... I spent a year living in Austin Texas so i'm pretty familiar with good mexican/ tex-mex. This place is the only one I have tried in New england that could stay in business for more than a week down that way. The queso is really good. Yes, its made from processed cheese. Thats what queso SHOULD be made out of. I havent had the guac yet but everyone else says its outstanding and I believe it probably is. The beans are good but unfortunately there is a little too much broth and not enough beans. Give me more dammit! Good rice too, cooked perfectly and tasty. The chile relleno might be the best I have ever had. I dont order them all the time but I have had lots of bad ones, lots of mediocre ones and only a few really good ones. Theirs is a really good one. Perfectly breaded, easy to cut and eat and doesnt fall apart. Enchiladas, burritos and everything else in my combo plates has been good too.The tamale was a bit disappointing. I do wish the portions were a bit bigger and i definitely wish their combo plates would include beans and rice! you can get out of here for under twenty bucks for two entrees for dinner though so its definitely excusable. Really happy we found a place for decent mexican!

Miguel (bartender) is very personable and knowledgeable. He made our dining fun and educational! The drinks we had were outstanding as was his service. He's a great addition to their already great staff.
(5)Jeff L.
Great food at great prices. They have a large selection of choices, and the portions are huge. If you like Mexican/Southwestern cuisine, this is as good as it gets.
(4)Tim S.
Burrito was really good.

Last time the drinks were good, but very disappointed on my recent visit: my margarita was the worst I've had in recent memory even though I ordered it with Patrón Silver tequila. It tasted very bland and flabby: not enough tequila, no fresh citrus flavour. When asked the waiter said the lime juice was fresh but there was orange juice in it... maybe they used frozen orange juice instead of orange liqueur? I sent it back and they added more tequila, which made it barely drinkable. Food was fine. Plan to visit another time but not after that if drinks bad again!

The chips and salsa were too mild and bland. I had a number 7 - very filling but bland. Service was slow and refills non-existent. I have been here about 5x and I have no idea why I keep going back. I will not be returning. It does not get better. The service is always non-existent. the staff doe snot speak English and do not care about how the food actually tastes as they never check in until after the meal is done. The fried ice cream was just plan gross. I Have no idea what the coating was and it certainly wasn't anything I ever had before.

Went here my mate and her dad. It was ok, reminded me of over the border. The food is typical of what you would see at Over the Border and taste about the same too. The service was good even and the manager stopped by our table to see how everything was. It was during lunch time so they were not that busy. We didn't have any complaints. For a close to me mexican type restaurant, it will do just fine.

I tried this place last week for the first time based on the recommendation of some friends. I was surprised to walk in and find that the decor was very inviting and warm since the outside landscape still looks a lot like a Bickford's (which is probably why I have never gone there in the past). We sat in a booth and there seemed to be ample seating-mostly booths with a few tables and chairs in the middle of the dining room. I got the burrito San Jose, which the waiter said was his favorite thing on the menu. It was spicy but not to the point that the spice ruined the individual flavors of the sausage, grilled chicken, rice and beans, which is the key to good Mexican. I would say it rivaled Mezcal on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester as far as main dishes since I would say drinks and guacamole and atmosphere are more Mezcal's strengths. I didn't try the guacamole that they make fresh at your table at Plaza Azteca but a lot of people around me were getting that too. They also had free chips, salsa, and queso dip which was nice. The servers were nice enough and the service was good but our main waiter was a little odd and not that personable. It was also not that busy so I would have thought that the waiters would have been more friendly/accommodating during the slow period we were there. Overall, I would give it three stars just because it's pretty good Mexican food for the Worcester area but I've definitely had much better as far as fresher ingredients. The servers could also use some improvement.

The food here is typically stellar, I highly recommend this place. Unfortunately the last time I went the girl didn't put the order in until super late, so my soup was completely cold. Kind of disappointing, but I'll go back because it's still a great dinner.
(4)Paul E.
The food is excellent, but what really sold me was how huge the beers are for such a normal price. Edit: The Margaritas don't seem as large as they use to be, but the beers are still huge.

I have been here at least half a dozen times over the last two years and it progressively got worse and worse. This time was the last time I will go here. My wife and I went for lunch on 10/19. Our "server" was Katherin (416). She brought out chips and salsa, but not the creamy mayo sauce they used to have also. We started by each ordering a margarita. I ordered a "stinger" and my wife ordered a stawberry. The waitress came back 12 minutes later with the drinks and took our food order. We started off with the "queso fundito" and "stuffed jalapenos". I ordered the "choriso stuffed chicken" and my wife ordered the "san miguel". After the waitress left we tasted our drinks. Mine was perfect, my wife's was passion fruit, not strawberry. She hates passion fruit so she just let it sit until we saw the waitress again. A food runner came out 13 minutes later with the apps and asked if we wanted more chips for the queso. We said we would and he brought them out 6 minutes later. The queso was GREAT. It was a little tough to eat as the sauted pepper and onion slices are a little large for the chips. The stuffed peppers were also good and came with a small side of french fries. Weird, but fine by me. 5 minutes later the meals were brought out by the same food runner. At this point our table was very crowded and we were told not to touch the plates because they were very hot. I don't know who's job it is to space out the courses, but they were obviously made at the same time and sitting under the heat lamp the whole time. Its has now been 24 minutes and my wife still has the wrong margarita, no water or anything to drink and we haven't seen the waitress. I took a bite of my chicken and it was rubbery and inedible. I don't know if its frozen and then fried and it was freezer burned. I just know it was nasty and should never have left the kitchen. You could tell by the translucent color it was bad. 12 minutes later the waitress walked past our table and turned around to ask if we needed anything. 36 minutes between seeing her. My wife told her the margarita was the wrong flavor and she argued that it was the right flavor and was fine. My wife told her to take a sip and see for herself. She lifted the glass to her lips, stopped and just said "fine, i'll make you a new one". My wife told her not to bother, we were done eating. The waitress then asked if we wanted some boxes. There were 3 full plates on the table (the apps were huge). At this point, I just wanted to cut out losses and get the hell out of there. I said yes we wanted boxes. She asked if we wanted 1 or 2! I told her 3 and the check. She came back with the check and it still had the margarita on it!!! 3 minutes later she came back and my wife told her the margarita was still on it and she said "well, yea". My wife told her we weren't paying for the wrong thing that we didn't drink and she said "ok" and came back with a new check with it taken off. We promptly got out of there and wished we had just gone to 5 guys instead.

Lunch salad was full of shrimp and chicken, great flavor, healthy and great portion there!! Service was good. Nachos to start are always great and the dipping sauces even better! Definitely check it out and definitely going back.
(4)Andrew C.
Great food at a great value. The table guacamole is completely worth the money. It would probably be a meal for 1 or 2 people, and is a nice appetizer for 4+ people. I recommend getting the chicken in your taco/burrito whenever this is an option (pretty sure it always is), I find the beef to be a bit bland (otherwise 5 stars). They also have a nice selection of beers at a reasonable price, and quite a few tequilas as well. Check the website before you go for dinner if you don't like live music. Also, if you go for lunch, make sure to get a punch card, your 7th lunch is on the house!

Geez, I must have overlooked the obligatory, "I'm from California and I have really high standards and THERE ARE NO AUTHENTIC MEXICANS OUTSIDE OF SAN DIEGO so I'm only giving this place three stars !!!FISH TACOS!!!" It's not the most perfect, authentic Mexican in the world, but sometimes I just want enchiladas and a margarita, okay? It's a really pretty restaurant and the servers bust their asses. I had a vegetarian combo, which was very, very simple but tasty. The bean burrito had almost no extraneous ingredients so next time I might just order a specialty burrito sin carne. If you order guacamole, the dude comes to your table with his little cart and cuts and mushes the avocado right in front of you. I'm sure this is old news in California but it was new to me. But what do I know, there's no REAL! AUTHENTIC! Mexican food around here.

I was torn between giving Plaza Azteca a 3 or a 4. I will commence to explain. I took John there for his birthday. He's wanted to try this restaurant out for a long time and since it was his birthday it was a perfect time. We got there earlier than normal so that we wouldn't worry about getting a table. The front foyer was roomy and done well in decor. I asked for a booth and she showed us to our table. I love that the set up in the main dining room was done in such a way that there were small "areas" instead of an all open design. It's a huge plus in my book. I got a chance to look around. The colors, the wood and the style all came together for a well cohesive warm decor. It sat well with me. Our waiter Joel came by and we ordered up house margaritas. Another came by with warm chips, a dip and salsa. That dip is damn addicting!!! For me, it was a perfect combination of spicy and sweet. I could have been happy just having more of that but that's not a birthday dinner should be! Soooo we ordered. We started with the Taco Salad for an app. It was perfect for 2, very well done, not huge so it didn't fill us before our main meal. John had a Burritos San Jose. HUGE burrito and he couldn't finish it which is saying ALOT!! I ordered # 16, a chicken quesadilla which was loaded with chicken and was very good and I think an enchilada that was ground beef wrapped in a corn tortilla with cheese and sauce....not so good. Tasted like Chef Boyardee raviolis. I'll pass on that part the next time. I do wish there was some type of rice or something else that went along with this order. It was just too...I don't know....I think something missing. Rice should always be with every meal. It's a standard and I think lots of patrons would appreciate the addition. Ok....DESSERT!!!! I couldn't pass on this as, like I said, it was John's birthday and you couldn't leave without SOMETHING! So I ordered the Flan. OMG!!!! It has got to be the best Flan I've had in a LOnnnnnng time. Very full of vanilla flavor!!! Perfectly done, Perfectly perfect. I want more.

I don't get all the hate for this place. Mr Bethany & I just had a Saturday night date here and it was great. First off, the hostesses were all very friendly and seated us right away at 5 pm. I couldn't believe how well they redecorated this place. You would never know that it had been a divey Bickford's. From the wooden chandeliers to the ceramic tile floors....everything done in dark wood with earth tones. It's first impression was a very relaxing & inviting one. Keyla (that's what the receipt said ;) was right there with hot chips, salsa, & a creamy dip. The creamy one reminded me of a mayonnaise based party dip -- had a good spicy kick. I personally tried it once but Mr Bethany really enjoyed it. We washed our chips down with house Margaritas -- because at $6.25 a pop -- who could resist? It took us a good 15 minutes to look over the menu -- lots of options ranging from ala carte items, combination plates, and specialty platters to choose from. Since it was our time we both chose a combination plate in order to try more items at once...and we were hungry. We order #15 & 20. All of our food was basic -- but done well, served piping hot and we had to take leftovers home. The stand out for Mr B was the chile relleno on his plate. It was a huge freshly roasted pepper, stuffed with cheese, battered & fried. Instead of tasting predominately of batter -- the chile flavor was beautiful. Made me wish I had gotten my own, ala carte ;) My chicken quesadilla was nothing more than huge chunks of chicken & cheese -- so I added some of the table salsa & it was perfect. Keyla actually refilled our chips & salsa for us during the course of our dinner so we used it as an extra condiment. So, again, I don't understand the hate -- but whatever -- and as far as I am concerned -- this is good Mexican food and we will be back!

I don't like chains-- they work from a slated menu usually including frozen ingredients and I can microwave my own meals at home-- thanks anyway Olive Garden. But I love this place-- especially the Polo Loco Chicken. I would knock down a group of diabetic old ladies waiting for an insulin shot to get in front of them here. The Polo Chicken is hammered down so tender you can cut it with a feather and the beans that come with it-- pureed down to an amazingly smooth consistency are worth dying for. Don't let the people calling for Authentic Mexican fool you-- if you're in Worcester this is about as close as you're going to get, unless you want to drive to the Alamo in Milford. Great friendly staff too. Oh and save room for the Vanilla Flan for dessert!

I wanted to give this place another try after visiting here once already with not such good results. Maybe we just didn't order the right thing? Well, I visited here today during lunch break from work with a few coworkers. The service was definitely excellent. We were given a bowl of chips, salsa, and queso to begin with and all was good. I ordered the chicken chimichanga from the lunch menu, my friend ordered a burrito, and the other one ordered quesidilla. food came out quick and our server informed us the plates were hot. I dived into my chimchanga and it was delicious! the chicken was super moist and so flavorful! the rice was a tad bland but accompanied with the refried beans it tasted great! my friends said their dishes was good as well. i guess sometimes, second times the charm.. will definitely come back for some drinks, that i heard were good and extra strong!

Awesome!!!

Despite being a chain, they do Mexican right Service was fantastic, food was hot, guacamole was home made (large portion) and chips were delicious. I got the taco enchilada combo, both very yummy, I honestly don't know what my date got (that's how focused I was on my own plate) Overall a good choice, no complaints here

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Worcester. I've spent a couple years in the south and was afraid my trip north would sacrifice good Mexican food. Fortunately, Plaza Azteca has shown this not to be the case! The service is pretty good. We have been a few times and do not end up waiting long. We've gone a couple times and enjoyed the meal every time. The chips and salsa they serve are good, but unusual. Pro-tip: if you mix the white, tarter-sauce-like dip with the salsa, it tastes far better than the white dip alone. I loved the chicken quesadillas and the burrito santa jose is also great. The atmosphere is generally pleasant and they cater to families (they occasionally have face-painting for kids). On one occasion, we were next to a large group that was very loud, but that seems to be rare. Overall, I'm very happy we found the place!
(5)Tux P.
We gave this place a shot for dinner with the kids. We were seated after a short wait, and were served chips and salsa almost immediately. It did take a while to get our drinks, including our waters. We had heard about the table-side guacamole, and were eager to try it. It was very good, and well worth the price ($8). However, we ran out of chips to scoop it up, and had to wait 5 minutes or so for more - I think that they should ensure that there are sufficient chips in the bowl when they serve the guacamole. The drinks were good all-around. My wife and I had margaritas and the kids had strawberry smoothies, and they were all very good. The adult plates were good, but not out of this world. The kids ordered from the kids' menu (we allow them to get whatever they want, even if it's an adult plate) and they weren't thrilled. The rice and beans side dishes were just plain and bland tasting. So, all-in-all, the guacamole "at the table" is worth the price of admission, but the plates themselves are just OK. We'll probably go back.
(3)Susan L.
I've eaten here twice, once in 2010 and again in 2012, while traveling for work and had pleasant experiences both times. The decor was nice, and service was friendly. I had the spinach and chicken enchiladas a few weeks ago as they were recommended by my server, and they were delicious. It's good food for a decent price with god service.
(4)Ran D.
This place is worth our 25 min drive. Why is finding a good Mexican restaurant such a hassle in Massachusetts anyway? We drive 25 minutes here regularly. Because the food consistent, service is fast, and it's really a fun place to start a night of debauchery. They have Dos Equis Amber tap in a huge 24 oz mug, and on the weekend nights its like a mini cinco de mayo party. Speaking of witch at the actual cinco de mayo party this year. I lost my voice crammed into a big communal table screaming with the soccer fans at a tv I couldn't even see. Ahhh good times. Place is great, just don't save room for dessert, are the only thing that I have found to be inconsistent.
(4)Mr C.
I'll give this place 3 stars, because the food was tasty, priced well, sizable portions, and the decor and service were pleasant. That being said, this place is what taco bell would look like if it was wearing a suit. Dishes were described as being smothered in nacho cheese (how authentico), and in actuality this is just melted white American cheese, lolwut? I generally like to have pork when eating Mexican, but they didn't seem to focus on pork as a protein (they had the token carnitas dish) which was signal enough for me to steer clear of whatever pork they had. I opted for the Burrito San Jose, which contained beef, chorizo, and had a nice salsa topping with some of the "cheese sauce" I mentioned above. It tasted freaking good (in the way taco bell does after youve been out drinking all night), but clearly the beans weren't up to snuff with a traditional Mexican sit-down restaurant and melted American cheese as a topping? seems like a dish a middle-America housewife would have put together for Mexican night. For Mexican restaurants in the area, I'd recommend visiting Cancuns or Aculpulcos first, but in a pinch you can get some delicious food here if you want something fancier than Taco Bell. tldr: this place is taco bell on prom night

We tried this restaurant tonight and were generally pleased with our experience. The first thing we noticed was the decor - which was pleasant and not over done. The floor tiles were beautiful and everything looked very clean. Spanish language music was playing over the speakers during our meal. I especially liked that the menu itself didn't feel like it had grit all over it like at some restaurants. They must wipe them regularly. Many, many choices on the menu and they have lunch specials from 11am - 3pm. I ordered the burrito/taco combination which came with rice and beans for $7.99 (great price!). Our waiter was very attentive (we did not feel rushed at all and we have kids who take forever to eat) and we were immediately served warmed chips with salsa and a ranch style dressing. Our drink order was also taken immediately - for sodas they have Coke products and Gold Peak Tea. We don't drink so I can't comment on that, but I noticed that a domestic beer was $3.25 and imported was $3.75. My children ordered the pizza which is prepared "Chicago-style" and they loved it. Our meals arrived promptly and were served hot. I enjoyed the hard shell taco which comes with ground beef, but I can see where people thought it was oily and it did make the shell slightly soft. They put a lot of cheese on it (which I loved) as well as lettuce. My burrito was tasty although plain - just a tortilla filled with ground beef with sauce and cheese on top. I enjoyed the refried beans and rice, but wished it also came with lettuce, sour cream, and tomatoes on the side like my husband's dish did (he got a steak quesadilla which he thought was just okay). I will definitely eat here again although I might try another dish. This restaurant is a welcome addition to an area with limited Mexican choices. Out of the other Mexican restaurants in the area, I thought this was the best of what we have. I give them 5 stars for being one of the cleanest restaurants I've eaten at.

We were seated quickly for a Friday night. The table side guacamole is a must order. There is bottomless tortilla chips and salsa in lieu of a breadbasket. The food was okay and the service left much to be desired. I ordered the Flag Enchiladas, my friend got California Fish Tacos and the kids got quesadillas and tacos from the unpublished kids menu. The waitress wasn't sure what was on the kids menu as they were out of kids' menus. My enchiladas were great until I got to the very bitter mole sauce which was also on all the the California Fish Tacos though it is not listed on the menu. Needless to say, my friend was unable to eat her meal and I left the enchilada with that sauce on it alone. The waitress couldn't answer many questions that we had about the menu or specials. She did check in on us once but it was almost the end of our experience. The service led me to believe that she must be new. We will give Plaza Azteca another try, if not for the entrees for the guacamole.
(3)Andrew D.
Maybe it's just me, but the first thing I thought upon entering Plaza Azteca was: "Look honey, it's a Mexican Olive Garden!" From the heavily stylized faux-adobe decor to the roaming faux-Mariachi band, the "authentic-ness" was deafening. As for everything else, it pretty much lived up to my Olive Garden expectations. Much like a bottomless basket of breadsticks, the chips and dips were probably the most memorable part of the evening's food. No doubt in an attempt to add to the authenic vibe of the place, our waiter had a heavy accent and spoke fast enough that only every 5th word sounded like English. I ordered the Fajitas Vallarta, which came with a sizable skillet filled with chorizo, beef, and chicken, along with all the generic fajita toppings and three tiny tortillas. The food itself was fairly good, although it lacked in seasoning and the skillet was already getting cold by the time it got to me. My boyfriend's Enchiladas Sonoras were equally edible but hardly memorable. As a final note, don't come here if you plan on having any extended conversations, the mariachi band wandering from table to table is at times painfully loud, and trying to shout over them is an effort in futility.

I am not one for Mexican Food. Neither is my husband. But for the sake of our vegetarian son, we ventured out. We were pleasantly surprised. Not your typical Mexican fare - a whole lot more. Good for the Mexican food expert , for the sampler, and for the gringo. Give it a try!
(4)Mike N.
Once I got past the initial unease that came with seeing the old Bickford's facility attempting to don new garb and pose as an authentic Mexican restaurant, it was great. Our server was quick and friendly and took the time to explain the mole', which I then ordered with my luncheon portion of chicken enchiladas. Delicious, even authentic. Or authentic enough. Yellow rice and refried beans were hot and also tasty. We'll be back.
(4)Diana C.
I'm so eager for some basic Mexican restaurant in Worcester (full service, not a taqueria, that is.) I was excited to visit this place, but I won't be back. We ordered: Queso Fundido appetizer, which is chorizo covered with what appears to be canned nacho sauce on a sizzling platter. Blech. Enchiladas Sonoras, chicken/spinach enchiladas with "a special sauce". Unfortunately the special sauce was a flavorless white sauce, and the dish didn't have any cheese or chiles anywhere, so not an enchilada as far as I'm concerned. Bland but edible. Fajitas Vallarta, mixed grill fajitas with chicken, steak, chorizo, onions, red and green peppers. The flavor of the chorizo was so strong that everything tasted like that. The side of refried beans was bland. Reasonably tasty if you like chorizo. We ordered margaritas too, which were large in size and fair in quality. The service was fair. Alonzo was attentive, perhaps a little too much so. I'm a slow eater and he came to ask if I wanted my plate wrapped up TWICE before I finished. (It was completely deserted so it wasn't just that we were occupying a table...and we weren't there for more than an hour anyway.) The high point of the meal was a spicy, creamy dip that came with freshly fried chips and reasonably good salsa on arrival.

Food it's blah.....dressed up taco bell.....boring flavors.....service it's slow.......mariachi band does not make for a quiet night when you're in the mood to have a quiet dinner

Jus awesome....their food is sooooooooooo good their entertainment is good. Its loud but my friends and I made the best out of it. Karaoke was awesome. I always have a great time wen I go to azteca
(4)Jim P.
Great Tex-Mex food. When I moved to the Northeast it was nearly impossible to find Mexican food like I had back home in Texas. Well, Plaza Azteca delivers. The atmosphere is nice and the food is excellent. When I am in the Worcester area, I always stop in and you should too.
(4)Anonymous A.
Over the year the place has gone down in its quality of food. The service still remains great. May not go there again.
(2)Alana L.
Went back here at the request of a friend and then decided I was never going back! Beef taco was sopping wet and the beef was the consistency of sawdust. It had no flavor and I'm pretty sure a taco with only beef inside is not supposed to make the entire shell soggy. I could barely eat it because the meat was dripping out of the shell. Actually I'm not sure it was even 100% meat. There are no prices on the drink menu. This is bothersome because when my bf ordered a middle shelf tequila for his margarita, it came out to $16. It cost more than each of our meals at lunchtime. Of course we couldn't do anything about it after he drank it. We didn't know it was that much until it was on the bill. I give this place 3 months tops. It was completely empty both times I've been there.

I had dinner at Plaza Azteca for the first time this past Saturday night.Other than a huge party with a number of loud, hyperactive children nearby, we really enjoyed our dinner and would definitely visit again. When we arrived, we were told there was a wait but only waited about two minutes before we were seated in a large booth with plenty of room for the three people in our party. We all ordered drinks... I got the house margarita (delicious and fairly priced) and my brother in law got an enormous beer (practically Oktoberfest size!). We were also served chips and salsa and ordered guacamole. A server with a cart comes and makes the guac in front of you; the guac was delicious. (We did wait a little bit for the guac cart to make its way to us though. The restaurant might think of adding more than one on Saturday nights.) I ordered chicken quesadillas which were flavorful, but contained a suspicious cheese sauce that tasted like American cheese. Since I'm not a fan of American cheese, I convinced myself that a Mexican restaurant would never be using American cheese in their food and was able to enjoy my meal. My sister and her husband each had salads and really liked their dinner. Our server was friendly and attentive and the restaurant has a festive but not overdone atmosphere. I'll definitely be back!
(4)J K.
Very good Mexican food with good drinks. They also have a huge draft beer mug (I think 32 oz) for cheap. Definitely some of the best Mexican in Worcester!
(4)Dana R.
I've since visited Plaza Azteca a few more times and had much better experiences ordering off the entree menu. While the entrees are a little pricey, they're very tasty, especially the burrito chicken chipotle. Staff and conditions continue to be very pleasing as well.
(4)Bret K.
Has gone from mediocre to sub par in the year since it opened. Most of the dishes, particularly those on the 'Combo' menu consist solely of meat (admittedly usually pretty tasty) and cheese (big globs of Monterrey Jack perhaps? bleh). Not the worst place for Mexican, considering your other Worcester option is Taco Bell, but I've stopped eating here.

Plaza Azteca is awesome! We had really struggled to find good mexican food around town, but we are finally satisfied. We have tried both the fresh guacamole and the cheese dip and both are very good. We mostly order the combos for dinner and have never been disappointed. They staff are friendly and the service is fast. They have live mariachi on Thursday which makes for a fun atmosphere.

Good place for lunch. Price is reasonable. Portion is big. Service is fast. Like their beer (XX on tap) for a fair price as well. 32 oz for $5.50. Also comes in pitcher. Food is delicious, though I haven't try anything too adventurous in the many times I've been there. If you can handle spicy would, I would recommend the Chicken Chipotle Burrito.

The decor is nice, as is the music. The food, on the other hand, was downright disgusting. The stuffed jalapenos were fine, although the plate came out with a ridiculously large "salad" garnish with lettuce that was questionable at best. My big peeve with this appetizer is that it came out with a plastic packet of ranch dressing on top of our food. They couldn't even put it on the side or in a cup? Really? Both of us got combination plates as our entrees and the plates came out so quickly (less than 5 minutes after ordering) and hot that there's absolutely no way they weren't just taken out of a freezer and popped in the microwave. If I wanted food from a microwave then I would have bought myself a tv dinner for a quarter of the price. On top of that, my order was supposed to be beef and came out with chicken. The chicken was so dry it tasted like someone had just thrown a chicken breast in boiling water for like 3 hours. The burrito was not an actual burrito with rice, beans and veggies, but instead was identical to my enchilada (except for having slightly more dry chicken and being wrapped differently) and was slathered in cheese and a watery sauce. The tortilla on my enchilada was chewy and hard (and tasted stale!) around the edges and falling apart wet in the middle. My companion's taco was, in her own words, "About half as good as one from Taco Bell" and the ground beef was completely flavorless. I expressed my concern to my waitress who got the manager. I found him to be rather rude. I told him the problems with our meals and he asked if I would like to order something else (without apologizing). I responded that I honestly would rather cut my losses and go someplace else for dinner. He said, "Fine well you don't have to pay for this." He then grabbed our plates and abruptly left. Never a single word of apology. All in all, good decor, horrible food and horrible treatment left me with a bad taste in my mouth and a queasy stomach. Based on this experience I would never recommend this place to anyone or return to it ever again.

great staff, table side guacamole was very cool food was good and portions good.
(4)Bruce M.
Good but not great food. Salsa was very good, the table-side made guacamole was worth every penny. Margaritas were almost all ice, very little alcohol. Service was slow but eventually everything came nice and hot. Flan was not real Mexican recipe. More gelatinous than custardy. Music playing in background started out loud hard head-banging rock, but switched to latin when asked to turn it down. TV overhead played infomercial. Why do we need a TV in a Mexican restaurant??? Almost a 4-star but just not quite there: room for improvement, especially with all the good restaurants within 30 seconds walking distance from this one.
(3)J S.
Uhg. Over salted chain-restaurant style food. Similar to On the Border. I won't go back.
(2)J. B.
Its chain restaurant style tex mex food. Good selection of entres and the prices are reasonable. Nothing special but does the job. Their best quality is the service. They are very friendly and serve you promptly. On week ends they bring bands into the bar area.
(3)J. M.
We've been here twice now for 3 tacos ($5.50), 34 oz beer ($5.50) and 3 chicken enchiladas (don't remember the price), and it was actually pretty gosh darn good. It's not the best Mexican food we've ever had, but it definitely better than most of the (limited) alternatives around the area. As you can see, we only order the basics which fills up our tummies and makes us smile when we're done. Service was good. Our waiter kept calling us amigos which just reminded me of our visit to Cancun. I actually liked the decor too. It wasn't trying to be cheesy and have Mexican knick knacks all over or folding chairs, but it was definitely Americanized Mexican decor which should appeal to the masses. A solid 3.85 stars!

This place is probably most similar to Margarita Grill in Auburn. A traditional Mexican restaurant, which Worcester was severely lacking. Now we've got it. The 2 salsas they bring with the tortillas - one tomato-based, the other creamy, are great in combination. They make the guacamole at your table, and all the food I've tried (burritos, enchiladas, and something else I can't remember now) was excellent. Good Margaritas plus they serve Pacifico.
(5)Adam N.
This is a great from-scratch local Mexican restaurant! The service was very pleasant and welcoming from the moment we walked in. Even though the decor was described as faux-Mexican, it gives you a truly authentic feel which only adds to the experience. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and provided great information. The margaritas are great and they have a HUGE selection of tequila. I plan to come back to the bar area in the future as they have daily specials during the week at the bar, and the opportunity to sample and educate myself on a variety of tequilas. The beer prices are great too. Where else can you get a 32oz beer for $7.25????? Margaritas are reasonably priced from $8 -15 depending on the size you get - regular and jumbo. They give complimentary chips and salsa (a bit too watery for us) and crema salad (a fantastic option!) We ordered our meals and the literally came out about 7 minutes later. Although the speed is incredibly quick it felt rushed. However, the food was fantastic and tasted incredibly fresh and flavorful. I had the spinach & chicken enchiladas with rice and my fiancee had the Enchiladas Poblanos with rice and a guacamole salad. Although she isn't a fan of cilantro, the gaucamole is loaded with it and I thought it was fantastic. We then decided to try a dessert because they looked fantastic.....and I'm glad we did! We had the flan.....it is some of the best flan I have tasted in a VERY long time. I wished the experience of the flan did not end. All the food presentation from dinner to dessert was artistically displayed and well presented on the plate. The prices were low to moderate making this an easy place for us to visit on a regular basis! I highly recommend Plaza Azteca even if you are looking for a more relaxed evening with slower pace of service, you just have to set the pace on your own. We arrived at 7 and were seated promptly, but by the time we left there were people waiting in the lobby for tables. This is a great and welcomed change to the Worcester area. Make this a destination for your next meal!

I really like the way this place was set up. It was big, but didn't feel too big. The chairs were these awesome heavy things that I loved, buuuuut it created a problem when you wanted to adjust the chair ever so slightly. I thought the margarita (I got the house) were perfect. And boy did they have a margarita menu! My food was good, but a little "middle of the road" in the sense that I could have gotten the enchiladas that I had anywhere. Nothing really stood out about them, and come to think of it, the same goes with the rest of the menu. There was nothing that jumped out that I thought "wow! I have to try that! I've never seen anything like it!" Solid place for Mexican food when in the area. p.s. I have expressed my love for table side guacamole, and this place was no different. Totally worth your money.
(4)Hannah K.
This is one of BF's favorite places to eat. While I've always found my food good it was never a place I clamored to go to until I tried the Tuna Tostados. Technically just an appetizer they are amazingly delicious. I get them and some guacamole and don't even mess with the rest of the hit or miss menu. Service is usually prompt and friendly and the margaritas are expensive but strong.
(4)Amber B.
I came to this restaurant after church. This place is well lit and the atmosphere is very welcoming. I had the Ranchero Special and it was really good. I will recommend that dish to anyone who like chicken, steak, and enchiladas. The chips and salsa they give you is really good as well. I will definitely come back.
(5)Dana C.
The only other PA I'd visited before is the one in Manchester CT. It was 'okay'. This was far better. The Pomegranate Margarita was delicious. Chips were good, salsa fresh and loaded with cilantro, loved it. Ordered the Baja Fish Tacos, which were very good. The waiter brought me a dish of hot sauce that was killer, plenty of heat and tasted great to boot. I'll definitely go back.
(4)N P.
Had lunch on Monday. Great Mexican food. Very good service, and lovely interior design.
(5)Jesse D.
Their gaucamole is their best, their food is good for Worcester but there is better Mexican food not too far away.

I came here with my mom a few weeks ago, and it was a great experience! I cannot say enough good things about the people who work here. We interacted with at least 7 people who work here, and everyone was so lovely and nice! We initially sat in one side of the restaurant, and after being sat next to 2 very loud families with children, we asked to be moved and it wasn't a problem at all! We sat in the other half of the restaurant, and had no complaints! The food was very delicious, but the one stand out was the guacamole. Upon hearing that it was our first time at Plaza Azteca, our server, Ernesto, gave us a free plate of guacamole! He made it right there in front of us, and it is honestly the best guacamole I have ever had. I am still dreaming about it. He was also the nicest, friendliest server there (seriously, give this guy a raise, he's incredible). The plates that we ordered were good, but nothing extraordinary. The real standout here are the servers. Also, why are the water glasses so small? That's my only complaint. Everything else about this place was stellar, I would highly recommend.

So here I am again, writing a review. My boyfriend and I went to, one of our favorite places. Well success has a way of changing a place. Not for the better. The glasses are smaller for soda, and the menu was changed. Not only changed but smaller. Now, grant it, they always had over 50+ selections (I could be mistaken, but a huge selection) to a smaller menu, with still yummy choices, but smaller, nonetheless. The new menu was brighter, inviting, but we noticed our favorite items were gone. Many of the choices were changed from rice and beans as sides to a choice of either rice or beans. I couldn't remember is the prices have changed, but at this point with all of the changes, I wouldn't be surprised. That pretty much did it for me. Don't get me wrong, the food was delicious, but the service was horrific. Our waitress didn't offer more chips and salsa, did come by with one refill of soda. Yes, that's right now many visits to the table to check on us. But true to form, the saving grace....Nestor. He delivered our food. He was energenic, delightul. He even remembered us. As we enjoyed our meals (food was delicious) we noticed the new people, slowly walking around, not the busy pace that were were us to them moving. The whole atmosphere was disappointing. These sutble changes, not really a big deal, but when it's coupled with poor service, I'm not really sure I want to spend my money. I know I will be rethinking my original review and take my sister and her husband to this place on their visit. I'm not sure f I will be going back myself. My jury is still out. Damn shame.
(3)Cathy H.
The tacos al pastor (marinated pork with pineapple salsa and excellent hot salsa) were as good as any in San Diego. Big portion for $13. Friendly and efficient service. A hidden gem.
(4)Hamed F.
Food was moderate. Service was lacking, most of the time the water cups were empty. Being with a large group of people is not always a good idea. Anyway, if I come back here won't be because of the place itself.
(2)Thomas T.
Best Mexican food in Worcester. Can't think of anything that comes even remotely close. Authentic and delicious! The staff is attentive and the food is incredible.
(5)Christine V.
Went here here past Saturday. Food was very quick, waitress was friendly. Hot tortilla chips and salsa were delicious. Ordered tacos barbacoa and they were not very good at all. Almost no flavor despite the seasonings advertised. However my boyfriend ordered the beef fajitas and they were delicious, the rice was good as well. Not too bad but a little overpriced. Not sure if I would eat here again.
(3)Michelle O.
Place is very bright and very noisy. Menu has a huge selection and all of the dishes I've had were tasty. Drinks are also very good and the large size equates to about 3 normal size drinks. Overall the place has a classy Taco Bell vibe but the food is a lot better. Suggest chile rellenos and guacamole, made at your table. Also, ask for the "White House Sauce", it's like a homemade ranch they used to give you with the chips and salsa.
(4)Carlos F.
We were told the place was very good. Going there the service was terrible, the food we ordered was not as described as on the menu and no explanation when asked the server and we had to keep asking for things. The only thing I did enjoy it was the pitcher but I can get someplace else.
(2)Mike R.
I came here when it first opened out of curiosity. And it has become the hangout/lunch destination of my work unit. Favorites of our group: Burrito San Jose Taco Salad Vegetarian Enchiladas Spinach Enchilada Burrito Chipotle Also...ask for the white sauce with your chips!! It rules!
(4)Sam T.
I really enjoyed the food at Plaza Azteca. We got the guacamole that they make on a cart at your table, it was delicious! You are able to choose which ingredients you want or don't want included and they make it with fresh avocados. I will be coming back.
(5)Steven W.
Wait staff seem unorganized. Running all over the place. What's with the guy singing m the bar? Too loud if you are sitting in the dining area near the bar. Magician? Are you trying to compete with the clown at Denny's across the street? I'd like to see him do a trick where he makes himself disappear. Food was par. Drinks came too slow. Had to ask 3 times.
(2)P G.
Best Mexican food in central mass. I have been here a dozen times and every time I'm blown away by the high quality of food produced here. Staff is extremely friendly and competent. Food comes out fast and hot. Only problem is being too full when you leave. Recommended to all! A+++
(5)S C.
My boyfriend and I had dinner here over the weekend. It wasn't very busy and we got a great seat at the bar. The ambiance was nice, but we were 2 of only 5 people in the entire bar area (including high top tables). The bar tender was not the friendliest. She did not give a warm greeting and it was clear that she did not want to be there. She did her job just fine but her demeanor was not good. We ordered our food which was a very good value and it tasted good. However, the next day we both didn't feel 100% and attributed it to the food. We will not be going back. There are much better Mexican restaurants near our home.
(2)Miss C.
Went here with my husband, can't say much about our waitress...but I am here for the food and she did bring it in a timely manner. The meal itself was good, I got a pork burrito and my husband got a beef dish (I forget the name, sorry) I liked the chips and salsa, and we did decide to get the table side guacamole, which was excellent! We also got the pork belly tacos to share, I would highly recommend these if your a sweet pork lover!! I would go again.
(4)Robert S.
This was one of the best Mexican meals I have had in a long time. The chips were nice and light...on the thin side. I asked for the Spicier salsa....when it came, I was in heaven !!! nice depth of spice, good kick... I ordered the Beef Fajita and everything was perfect, the meat was well marinated, tender, lean and sizzling hot. The peppers and onions were nicely grilled on the hot platter. The rice, pico de gallo and cheese were also very good. Everything tasted fresh. My friend got the Burrito and it was HUGE. He loved the taste of it and he did not leave anything on the plate... The waiter Oscar was good, but could had been a bit more attentive and cordial, ...the service experience was not enough of an issue..... for me not to give this place the coveted 5 stars !!!
(5)Ruben A.
Me and my gf both got food poisoning from our last visit there. Other then that, drinks are huge and food is decent, nothing special
(2)Veronica D.
Service was poor. We never got our table side guacamole that we had ordered. Best part of the meal were the tortilla chips. My friend's dessert was gross (freezer burned, apple churros). I opted for the "Godiva chocolate cheesecake" to go because I was full. What I got was a disgusting, freezer burned, black and white, hospital cafeteria cheesecake. Very mad considering we paid Godiva price. Won't be going back. Yuck.

I suppose how you experience Plaza Azteca has to do with your expectations. I've been to Mexico several times and while I don't expect "fully authentic" Mexican food in Massachusetts, I do want it to at least be reasonably close. What you get here is quite Americanized and focuses on large servings rather than flavor. Also, the service was fairly poor. But if what you want is large portions for little money, you'll get that here. First, the food. Yes, the portions were huge. We took a lot of leftovers home. But it was made as cheaply as possible. The burrito was stuffed with rice. The emphasis is on the filler ingredients and not the substance. My sangria seemed to be 90% fruit juice. I could barely drink it, it was so sugary. Even inexpensive food can be presented well - but here it was as if someone barely took the time to dump it onto a plate. My appetizers were all slid to one side of the tray. There was loose meat everywhere. It showed a lack of care. The waitress didn't know about things on the menu. I asked for extra sour cream - she brought none at all. Water glasses sat empty. Wine glasses sat empty. Again, it just showed a lack of care. I was told by my friends I ate with that at least we could talk to each other without shouting while we were there. Apparently on other nights they have a band which drowns out all hope of conversation. With all the awesome other options in the Worcester area, I just won't be coming back here.
(3)Matthew P.
Great Mexican food. Table side guacamole is a must have. Very fresh food. Service could be better but overall it's a nice place to have lunch or dinner.
(4)Jessie H.
I loved this place when they first opened, but the food has gone downhill and the prices have gone up. Very disappointed lately.
(2)Marek T.
Solid mexican food. The margarita's are pretty good, and the 'El Molcajete Azteca' is fantastic. It's kind of like a fajita in those big basalt guac bowls with a pepper sauce and worth the trip.
(4)April A.
It was ok. No table side guacamole as they were out of avocados. Huh?!? A Mexican restaurant out of avocados?? They are right next door to Stop & Shop. My son's kids meal of burrito and soft taco was not good. The burrito had a ketchupy sauce on it and he did not like it. The kids meals came with large drinks, which was appreciated. Our meals were ok. Nothing to come back for. One of our orders was off the lunch menu, not the lunch specials menu, and they charged us the full dinner price and we had to ask for an adjustment. Only one part of the lunch menu says it's only M-F (we were there Sunday at lunch time). We likely won't be back unfortunately. Wish they had the guacamole available!
(3)Sarah C.
Came here around 5:30 on a Friday night and they were slowly starting to get busy. We were in a super rush and I let the waiter know as soon as we sat down. He was beyond helpful getting us in and out in the time we needed without making us feel rushed. We ordered the guacamole which was beyond good and fresh. The flavor was perfect! (I can't wait to order it for a party coming up!!) I ordered the chihuahua plate (taco, enchilada, rice and beans). The enchilada was very good and I loved the sauce it came with (some places the sauce tastes like it came straight out of a can). The taco was fresh and the queso fresco made it mouth watering. The rice and beans were run of the mill Mexico fair. My friend ordered a spicy shrimp and pasta dish (not something I would order at a Mexican place) and it came out with HUGE shrimp and was absolutely delish! We didn't have time to try any dessert - and because I was driving her around I didn't get to try a marg... but I will be back to try and more and will update this review very soon. I just wish it was closer to my house! $30 for dinner for two on a Friday night - you can't beat that!
(4)Janet T.
I'm going to start by saying we were there with a large party. 11 adults and 1 infant. When we arrived, we put in our name (or so we thought) and was told it was about 25 minute wait. A few minutes later we checked and they never took our name down. We were the given a pager. They were planning on putting us at a set of tables, but there was one party of 4 that were just taking their sweet old time sipping their drinks and talking so our wait ended up being 45-50 min before they decided to place us somewhere else. As for the service. The waitress was very good at taking our huge order was very attentive to our needs. The food came fast after we ordered but the drinks were what took some time. The cleanliness of the place was alright. The floor was DISGUSTING! I had a diaper bag and since the space we were put was pretty tight, placed it on the floor. It was in a corner and there was a whole bunch of dirty scum, food, etc was there. Food was good. Drinks were good. Freshly made guac was good.
(3)Thomas I.
This place has taken a change for the worse. Burritos were bland with no spices. Tacos were worse. I will never go back. They sucked. Went there regularly before. They have cheapened up the product to the point that I would rather have the dollar menu at McDonalds...which is crap.
(1)Terri B.
Fresh and delicious, from the chips and salsa to the corn tortillas under my beef barbacoa. Great way to end the day. Terrific service too.
(5)Annie B.
I've been a few times, the restaurant service is fine. The bar service on the other hand is horrible. I shouldn't have to ask for silverware repeatedly or bus my own table when there are only 6 tables in the room and 2-3 bartenders at the bar. It is too bad because the food and drink are good but the service is wretched.
(2)John B.
Delicious Mexican food for Massachusetts. I was very impressed with the fajitas and enchiladas. Both were delicious and the meat was well cooked. I shared a jumbo Texas margarita which was also delicious. I will be back for sure!
(4)Peggy H.
Food was not particularly good. Service was slow and inattentive. Never offered to replenish coke or water. Had to send food back because we requested no sour cream but it was included. Decor was a bit nicer than your average shopping center restaurant.
(2)Khoa N.
My friends and I like coming here after our finals/exams. Today was one of those days. Why do we like Azteca? The pitchers of margaritas go realll well after a long and exhausting stretch of exams, or to celebrate a milestone reached. The pitchers of margaritas go real well with everything. The food is ok, I didn't try the table-side guacamole but it looked very appetizing and my friends seemed to like it. The salsa was a bit watery but tasty and had enough amount of spice. The white salsa was surprisingly good. Try it! Azteca is not the best Mexican food I've had, but that matters little when we're having a good time. The service was a little slow but very good. We came at 3 pm, which just marked the end of the lunch menu but Happy Hour was at 4. Odd hour. However, they were able to accommodate and let us order from the lunch menu. Suhweet. Good margaritas. Great place to hang out.
(3)Sarah A.
Best Mexican food in the area hands down.
(5)Michelle N.
Good food=happy campers. After dining here, we left stuffed and satisfied, with a bag full of leftovers! The staff was friendly and our waitress was bubbly and attentive. The decor was cozy and inviting. The food was plenty and good, though nothing spectacular but tasty nonetheless. And I really liked their salsa... practically added it to everything I ate. But what really amazed me was how quick the service was! We received everything within around 5 mins of ordering. Awesome. Overall, good place for some Mexican food. Will be back again and definitely making sure to leave room for some dessert next time.
(4)Tony P.
Just okay - not the best Mexican around, but not terrible. It was a bit bland, to be honest... I wont rush back anytime soon. Service was fine, I know others have complained - though I only did takeout.
(3)Tony M.
The table side guacamole was definitely the highlight of the visit. This is something different in a sea of chains. The food was pretty good, although the portions are kind of small for the price. The roving mariachi band was also nice.
(4)Tracy K.
The mushroom quesadilla is delicious. I like the white salsa too, but you have to ask for it. They no longer can leave any condiments on the table..including hot sauce, because people steal them. We miss the hot sauce on the table and it's a pain to have to ask for salt and pepper every time. The service is inconsistent. Sometimes you get great service and sometimes you can feel invisible.
