Blackfish, No. Truro, the Upper Cape: A Perfectly Executed Evening of French and American Seasonal Cuisine After an absence of some five years, we have just finished a lovely-though-very-warm full-sun Mid-Sept.week on the backbone of the Old Cape Cod, the lower and upper reaches of Rt.6A, from Sandwich to No.Truro. During our stay, we had four "fine dining" dinners at : Inayo (Yarmouthport), Ceraldi (Wellfleet), Abba ( Orleans) and Blackfish ( No. Truro.) By far the star of the week was Blackfish. (The others I have posted separately, elsewhere on this site.) BF is located in a small 18th c. clapboard Cape near the tiny local P.O. Both the bar and the two dining rooms are hot spots for a very diverse crowd of locals, dressed casually but with flair and artistic style. The main dining room is dark and low lit, very romantic and charming, filled with 40-60 yr. olds, many 4-tops and trios. Everyone seemed to be comfortably settled in and enjoying themselves immensely.A flowering garden area is visible out the rear large windows, and attractive original sea-themed artwork is lit on the dark walls. Table bread is a warm house-made roasted garlic, delivered with a lagnappe of white bean puree and EVOO. Bantam cider and a Cosmo with a very flavorful cucumber infused vodka- were our refreshing beverages on a hot Indian Summer Thursday evening. I began with a perfectly created generous disc of Foie Gras Torchon, redolent of its brandy maceration and served with a punchy local berry compote. My idea of Absolute Heaven. My Love also had his Nirvana, a striking plate of seared local sea scallops on a Parmesan Fonduta with mini Parmesan Tuiles. We both succumbed to the fully authentic description of the (Southern French )Bouillabaisse, and our deftly skilled waiter never missed a step, delivering our steaming bowls along with our requested extra broth and rouille. Truly a plentiful bounty of the loveliest of lovingly a la minute- added shellfish, squid and haddock. (It really is not an exaggeration when I say that the squid was the softest and silkiest I have ever had. Man, how I wish I could send every chef to the Blackfish kitchen to learn how to handle squid.) My Love finished his bowl with great gusto; I reserved half of mine for later because my advance research had shown me that their desserts were actually well worth ordering. (Boring, unimaginative desserts are found far too frequently in fine dining restaurants, imo.) The Corn themed sweets plate was a 'Corn Pudding' (kind of like a light sugared Indian cornmeal Bavarian timbale) with Maple Candied Pecans and Corn Ice Cream. A perfect ending. There were people waiting for our table so we rushed out, but next visit, we hope to meet the talented chef and have a few meals here (Certainly no need to sample elsewhere in the area, with this well balanced and varied menu and the perfect execution we so enjoyed!) All of the staff, from Hostesses to wait people and 'bread and bussers'- were welcoming and deftly efficient and professional. What a night to remember a special trip! * Blackfish has no website; I found a sample menu and beautiful photos here, and they also post on Facebook: capecodchefs.com/restaur…

Restaurants in Truro are few, so after a loooooong exhausting day sunbathing at the beach (lol) we don't like to go too far. Seems like a lot of people feel the same way because the place was packed (and also there for the good food). This is a cute little place with cuisine and decor that is a mix of a couple restaurants I frequent in Greenwich, CT. A very "farm to table" feel, I quite enjoyed the meal I had. I wasn't starving so I just ordered a salad, but it was perfect! Locally grown tomatoes with burata, a nice vinaigrette type dressing... exactly what I wanted! My parents rave about the burgers and you can customize them with all sorts of toppings. The burgers come with homemade chips that are amazing! Hence, that's what they ordered this trip with me. (They'll probably become regulars as they stay up on the Cape through September. Drinks were great, they have a wonderful wine list that is quite extensive and the mixed drinks were nicely done and generous. Service isn't speedy by any means--but hey, we're all supposed to be relaxed and in vacation mode, so we were okay with that and were able to enjoy our evening. I love seeing restaurants support the local businesses and farmers, so kudos to them! I'll definitely be back.

Our dinner was delicious!! Starting from a really good service and a romantic atmosphere, followed by a great dinner and a dessert that blasts you away. The beet platter was our least favorite. It was ok, but nothing i would choose again. All in one a great experience!!
(4)Jennifer K.
Every dish our party if three had was interesting and well-prepared. Vegetarian and gluten free options available. Great space - almost underground looking out through many windows at lush greenery. I'd definitely go back and I don't do that often.

Fantastic gem tucked away in the Truro. Last night I had one of the best meals I've had in a long time. On vacation up in Wellfleet my wife, son and I decided to try Blackfish and made a last minute reservation and were glad we did. First off the service, unassuming but perfectly timed, they gave us ample time to select both our drinks and meal and both were broguht relatively soon after ordering, the rest of the wait staff was also attentive and cleared our table only after the last person had clearly finished their meal. I had the wild mushrooms over tagliatelle, it was perfectly cooked, a very good sized portion and as tasty as it comes. My wife had the haddock over cuscus and again it was perfect. Lastly, my son had the tuna bolognese and he said it was the best pasta he had ever had. Even the sourdough bread was great. All this and in an out in an hour in ten minutes (our choice to be quick not theirs), so much better than other meals we had had in Wellfleet earlier in the week. Plan ahead don't miss this place. So good we even purchased a gift certificate for friends.

This restaurant is excellent. The food is unique and delicious, the service impeccable, and the ambience romantic and cozy! It's definitely not cheap but the cuisine and cocktails are top-notch. I was really impressed and so are the masses, apparently, judging by the busyness at 9pm (the only available reservation time). This little gem in Truro is worth the wait and price whether you're looking for drinks, apps, or a five course meal!
(5)Eileen S.
Great dinner here last night. The decor, service, and experience were all consistent and excellent. Rib eye and lobster gnocchi were fantastic. Desserts, top notch. Make a point to find this spot when you're in or near Truro. Loved it.
(5)Van H.
Had the privilege of dining at Blackfish last night. Best meal I've had on the Cape by a country mile. In fact the cuisine, service and overall execution can hold it's own against any 5 star restaurant in the country. We will certainly be coming back often with a smile on our faces.
(5)David W.
We loved this charming and cozy place. Everything flavorful with lovely service. Not fancy, just really good. Perfect for a night out.
(5)Lorri P.
We have been eating at Backfish for 4 years straight and we are never disappointed. The service is excellent! The restaurant is both relaxing and lovely combining chic with mellow. The food is delicious. And the cocktails are topnotch and can compete with the best of Brooklyn. We love Blackfish
(5)Brenna R.
One of my absolutely favorite restaurants down the Cape. It's a hidden GEM! The food and service are very good. Anything you order - you will get a delicious meal!

This is a tough review to write. We eat at this restaurant every summer and are always impressed on how good the food is and this evening it was no exception. The fried oyster and scallop apps were quite impressive and the salad was a delicious complement to our meal start. BUT the waitress was really lousy and put a big damper on an otherwise delightful and innovative high quality meal. First, our table was situated in a bad spot and I was always getting bumped by the wait staff so after telling the waitress of the situation she said she will check with the hostess about reseating us. Nothing ever happened. Next, she did not know anything about the beer list and had to check her notes. Then one of our party ordered the burger and asked for a salad or Vegetable instead of the chips and there was no effort made at all by the waitress to accommodate the request. We of course would have paid for any up charge. Then when the hamburger arrived she asked what condiments were needed and then she forgot to bring them and had to be reminded and then the burger was cold and had to be reheated. She asked us if we wanted a second round of drinks when the meal was completed and the dishes removed; odd ask! Then for the grand finale when the check came she over charged us by almost 75% by charging us for twice the number of entrees ordered by our party. One quick look at the check by the waitress would have prevented her from bringing us the wrong check. All we received was a half baked apology. But for the service we would have rated the meal 4 stars.

3 out of 3 happy customers tonight--awesome tuna bolognese over fresh pappardelle with mascarpone and lemon confit...sauteed wild mushrooms over fresh tagliatelle was so flavorful...pan roasted haddock with toasted wheat berries, haricot vert, leeks, and a sofrito vinaigrette was just phenomenal--Cape Cod Red and Cabernet Franc from Truro vineyards added to the mix of flavors. Honestly, the service and the food could not be topped tonight--absolutely delicious! Thank you Blackfish!

Wanted to like this place, but was disappointed from the get go. Our reservation time got messed up because they were using a new res system. The hostess was rude and acted as though the mistake was ours. She was rude and made little effort to accommodate us. My companion's pork was served rare. My chicken was blood red at the joint. If you go, stick with items that are not cooked to order. Service staff was very good.
(2)Tricia C.
Our favorite restaurant! We have enjoyed every meal... And there has been too many to count. Enjoy... We will!
(5)Daniel K.
Great environment, food and service. Large appetizers. And the price was reasonable. Really enjoyed it!
(5)Gino C.
This is place is a hidden jewel. The food is terrific and the atmosphere is really nice. You can have a romantic night with just the two of you or bring the kids along.
(4)Azury L.
Really not impressed by the receptionist and service. I understand that restaurants here get busy on weekends, but the receptionist however never should neglect customers who are waiting to be seated. We were here waiting for 45 mins accordingly, and it's 10 mins before closing, no update on when we'll get a seat. Sorry, won't try to come back again even the food might be good.
(2)Joan L.
My favorite place for for a fantastic and varied menu. I have never been disappointed in anything here. Whether you opt for a burger or go all out for steak and seafood you'll love it. Busy busy at night in season and on weekends...call ahead for reservations. I love lunching here during tourist season...lol...you'd swear you were listening to an x rated movie from all the mmmmmm's oooooo's and ahhhhhhhh's you hear. It's that good.
(5)Ralph A.
Love Black Fish! My favorite thing to go and sit for dinner in the lively bar. If your lucky you will get a seat at the bar. The amazing bar tender/oyster man/surfer Curtis will mix you up great drink. Best fried oysters harvested by Curtis. Wonderful burger with home made chips. Spend time watch the Red Sox game and strike up conversation with all people who frequent Black Fish. It will become a favorite stop or hang out anytime your lucky enough to find yourself in Truro!

Is this the best restaurant on The Cape?!? I haven't tried all of this season's Must Dine venues in P'Town etc, but I know that every time we visit, Eric Larson's cooking is consistently satisfying. Every dish is somehow homey ... and yet also a little exotic at the same time. Here are the secret ingredients keywords we look for now: Local honey; Wild mushrooms; 'Candied...;' extract. This time I finally broke down and got the bone-in ribeye. The one with Truffle Butter. I had always been intimidated by this dish because, well it's $45 -- and we're not in NYC! Tonight it was paired with Pommes Anna and some unctuous spinach with blue cheese. I added a glass of Emblom Cabernet and Raspberry Pavlova to finish for a great meal. Worth every penny--and I liked how he playfully added back in mainstays of 1920s Russian Emigre Cuisine to create a completely 21st Century dining experience!
(5)Chris B.
Fantastic meal & fantastic service! Everything was delicious - the wine, the apps, the entrees and dessert! Pure heaven!! Try the lobster and gnocchi!!! There was nothing about this meal that wasn't exceptional!
(5)Amanda S.
Fantastic! So glad we went! Make sure to have reservations, and be careful of parking. Fried oyster and scallop appetizers were out of this world! Will definitely be making a return trip next time we're on the Cape.
(5)Cheryl W.
One of the best restaurants around! Must have reservations made in advance unless you get lucky! Excellent service and food is fresh and homemade to order! We go a few times a summer for sure! Don't miss this great resturant.

We were visiting the area and came across Blackfish while browsing restaurants on Yelp. We made a reservation for a Saturday night and I am so glad that we did! The restaurant itself is lovely; has a nice inviting and intimate ambiance. The service was great too. My glass of water was never sitting empty. The waitress, hostess, and the individuals bussing tables were friendly and professional. Now let's get to business...the food was excellent. We started with a Scallop appetizer that was delicious. My husband opted for a lobster dish with gnocchi. It was also very good. I went with a special they were offering that evening: a seared tuna in a roasted corn beurre monte (sp?). It was AMAZING (I feel like the capitalization on that does not do the amazingness justice). I had to basically build a wall around my dish so my husband would stop eating it. In all seriousness, it was one of the most interesting and delicious seared tuna dishes I've had. I'm actually starting to salivate while writing this... 100% recommended to anyone who likes delicious food.

We had two great dinners at Blackfish. Everything we tried from the salads and fish to the duck dish were delicious. They use fresh and interesting ingredients combined with excellent flavors. They also make very good cocktails. We didn't try dessert but they sounded good. The atmosphere is very pleasant and service is nice. A great asset to have in Truro!
(5)Sami W.
Came back again this year and had probably the best meal of my life!
(5)Rob C.
First, just trust your gps to get you here - otherwise, you'll miss it. Our waitress was spot on with recommendations, not the least of which, included the fried oyster appetizer. I'm not a huge oyster fan and I don't each much fried food - I don't care who you are, you should order this! After my wife stole two and our friend another, we ordered a second round of these little morsels from an underwater heaven. The highlight of the entrees was probably the wild mushroom dish, the complex layers of flavor were unreal. We had a party of 4 and all the food was impeccable, my compliments to the kitchen. Blackfish now ranks in my top 3 restaurants for the Cape: tied with Fin and ahead of Macs. The price was fair for what you get, I believe it ended up being about $60-70pp with drinks.

We had been meaning to try Blackfish for several years as we had heard that the food was very good. Last night was the night. It was ok - not bad, but not particularly good either. The onion tart appetizer was good, although both the duck prosciutto and the cheese that came with it were extremely salty. My husband's tuna bolognese was also good, although the bolognese overwhelmed the tuna a bit. I had the steak salad special - a pretty basic dish reasonably well prepared. The steak was nicely cooked and the arugula nicely dressed, but the tomatoes were cold and not particularly flavorful - as if they had just come out of the fridge. My glass of red wine was served too warm and did not justify it's $15/glass price tag. We were in the slightly subterranean room in back. It was extremely noisy and dark. Someone kept fiddling with the lights and our table would get randomly slightly brighter or slightly darker over the course of the meal. As the evening wore on the room emptied out and became quieter - but emptier room made the unpleasant musty basement odor noticeable. Perhaps other entrees in other sections of the restaurant yield the experience people are raving about in the other reviews.

Having been to Truro and Provincetown a few times this summer I can say that, hands down, Blackfish was the restaurant that most under-promises and over-delivers. The rabbit and foie gras are the standouts, but the skirt steak is worth mentioning as are the mussels. As other reviewers have mentioned, the service could be slightly better. They are particularly militant about scheduling reservations on the quarter hour, and it's rare for the time you're looking for to be actually available, even in the off-season. It's also not uncommon for the host or hostess to be absent when you arrive at the restaurant, so be prepared for a short wait there. That being said, the waitstaff are both friendly and knowledgeable, if a bit overworked. I also really like the decor, which is all blacksmith themed, starting with the iron wrought door, and namesake "Blackfish" and continuing inside with bellows, yokes, and other tools of the trade.
(5)Judith M.
I want to give it 4.5 because I'm kinda a jerk and want to say that the lighting was too low to read the wine list- lol. Otherwise, what about the food wasn't perfect? The pork belly confit? Pretty perfect. Halibut- VERY perfect. Skate? Perfect. The lovely waitress? - best service I've had in years. OK- maybe the dessert was a tad lackluster? Bread pudding and bacon ice cream kind of heavy and not quite perfect. Just average delicious. Ok. Give it 5 stars already.
(5)Don K.
This place deserves 5 stars but only gets 4 because trying to make reservations is a nightmare! Get a phone with multiple lines and voicemail. Otherwise.... Bone in rib eye with house chips and creamed spinach is amazing as was the Pablo crusted sole. The owner is exec chef at Local 186 in Ptown (another great Place). We'll be back!

I was sadly underwhelmed at Blackfish. Given the high ratings, I was expecting more. The restaurant has a very cool atmosphere and attractive interior and the service was excellent. The food was lackluster for most of our party of 10, however. Given that it was $600+, I just don't think it was worth the money (and two in our party ordered burgers). I had the seafood stew. I expected more seafood, but was disappointed that the fish that came in the dish was so small and flaked off, that it was really more like a soup. There were a few rings of calamari, one tiny piece of whole fish (the size of a mini peppermint patty). Of the three mussels that came in the stew, one was not opened and had to be discarded. There were also three cherrystone clams which were so small that I wasn't sure there was actually anything in them. I'm sure the fish was all fresh, but unfortunately the broth was so spicy and overwhelmed by the Andouille sausage that you could not taste the seafood. The one standout was the piece of garlic bread that came with the stew. It was buttery and delicious. I also tasted the striped bass (again, fresh fish but disappointingly bland) and the the sole with caper sauce, which was crisp but lacking in flavor with absolutely no hint of the promised lemon caper sauce. The fried oyster appetizer, at $14, featured six soggy and tepid oysters - not at all the crispy and light ones we expected. My dad was happy with his oysters on the half shell, but that is not a testament to anything the chef did! My mother had the chocolate tart with a pretzel crust for dessert. It was dry, overly salty and lacked any chocolately richness. The salty element was not balanced by a sweet element. Again, disappointing. Our waitress was terrific - attentive, friendly, and very informative. She steered us away from a lamb special that featured a fatty piece of meat (2/3rd fat, she said.....which left us wondering why they would ever choose that cut?) and brought out the meals for the two kids in our party early. Maybe we hit the restaurant on an off night, but I would not bother going back again based on our experience and the relatively high prices for what we got.

Another five stars for Blackfish. This time I returned with just my boyfriend. With no reservation and an hour and a half wait for the dining room, we snagged two chairs in the bar area. We shared the creamy clam and potato appetizer, which was extremely rich and flavorful. Note: in my first review last summer, I mentioned the lack of butter for bread. They have it if you ask. I ordered the tuna Bolognese for my main and Zack got a burger. About ten minutes later, the waiter came by and apologized- they had run out of patties. A tad disappointing but not a problem, if anything it means the meat they use is extremely fresh. We decided to forego another entree and share the tuna, which ended up being a perfect amount of food. I cannot stress enough how unique and delicious this entree is. Hints of cinnamon, lemon, cream, tomato and herb make for a truly incredible flavor. With some room for dessert, we indulged in a blackberry bread pudding with brandy ice cream. One bottle of wine, appetizer, entree, dessert, tax, tip = $100 even. Worth every penny.

Wow. Not to sound like a snob, but I'm a New Yorker who works in the restaurant industry so I love to eat out often and try new places. After trying all the popular spots in Wellfleet, we decided to drive out here. So glad that we did. My boyfriend and I had an amazing meal-- steamed littlenecks in a cream broth, a special watermelon rib app and the 22oz ribeye and the tuna bolognese. Everything was delicious and perfectly cooked-- do yourself a favor and come here. Everything else will pale in comparison-- seriously, we almost came back 2 nights later!! By FAR, the best food in and around both Wellfleet and Truro. Come here if you want your socks knocked off.
(5)J D.
4.5. Wow, truly delicious food! Excellent bread served w bean dip in olive oil was special. Fried oysters, kale salad, lobster w gnocci. Great chocolate tart. Very pleasant space.
(5)Emily P.
Fantastic-do recommend a hardcore workout before dining here! Fresh warm bread to start. Buttermilk oysters are divine. Lobster entree was pretty good; bit heavy on the butter but generous lobster meat. Tuna bolognese converts meat lovers to fish aficionados.
(4)Debbie B.
My husband and I ate at Blackfish for the 2nd time and we were not disappointed again! He started with the lightly fried oyster app and Loved them. "Very light" he said they were. I, not being a fan of food from shells, opted for the Beet carpaccio salad. Very delish! His entree was the double short rib w/garlic mashed. So good and had leftovers for lunch. I enjoyed the Panko pan-seared sole w/cauliflower mash. Hmmm yum. Capers were a nice touch. We took home the Pretzel crusted chocolate hazelnut deliciousness. Our service was good, not rushed. Water glass was always filled, it as a very warm night. We sat in the front room and it got loud as the room filled, but didn't really interfere with our conversation. Next time we rent in Truro, we will be back.
(4)Amanda R.
Easily the best meal we've had on the Cape- and we've tried several places between Hyannis, Chatham, and Yarmouth. Everything from the ambience to the dessert was excellent. The food is definitely made from the freshest ingredients and perfectly seasoned. We had the little neck clams and mussels- I think the mussels were better :) but both were great. Then we had the braised short ribs and lobster with gnocchi. Again another slam dunk! Most tender ribs and perfectly cooked gnocchi with serious chunks of lobster. Our server Lily was excellent- very knowledgable about the dishes and personable. Overall A++ would highly recommend to anyone looking for a high quality meal. Reservations are a must!! Even the bar gets crowded!
(5)S. C. C.
This is the best dining experience I have ever had on the Cape, even better than PB. Excellent service, wonderful food, romantic atmosphere. It does not get better than this. I will be back!
(5)Paul M.
Blackfish is the best restaurant in Truro and one of the best on the entire Outer Cape. The menu is unique, interesting, and with something for all tastes. The atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable in this converted blacksmith shop. The rabbit ragu is outstanding but if you're into dishes that are more conventional, various seafoods are available. Blackfish gets a lot of their ingredients from local farmers so the preparations will always be fresh with a native flare. I've gotten into the habit of pairing a couple of appetizers such as starting with oysters on the half-shell, then having pan-seared scallops with the house salad. My only complaint, as someone who lives in the area, is that they're not open in the off-season. I would also recommend making reservations, especially on the weekends. Service is excellent. Highly recommended.
(5)John S.
1st time visit and had fantastic meal; very fresh, local, sustainable progressive menu;seared foi gras on brioche w rhubarb compote inspired flavors; same for scallop app; oyster app good but not great; both the lobster and sole entrees were superb; unrushed, pleasant wait staff; we had nice table tucked away in back corner but can see how other tables out in the room could get a bit loud. Agree its one of the best we've been to on the Cape. Surprised how tricky it was to find despite the straightforward directions. We will be back. Really enjoyed it
(4)Jeanne H.
We went to Blackfish on Friday of the week after Labor Day. The service and the food were excellent! This was without a doubt the best meal we had on the Cape. Every bite of my meal and the bites I was given of my family members's meals was delicious. I had the appetizer, Pork Belly on Polenta, which was so good it almost brought me to tears. It had all the sophistication of the New York City restaurant scene mixed with the taste and aroma remembered from my grandfather's midwest farm table. The scallops, both in the appetizer with Parmesan fondue and in the entree with corn, a special, were sweet and fresh--really exceptional. My daughter and I shared the fig and goat cheese dessert while my husband and son-law shared the chocolate and hazelnut on a pretzel crust; both were exquisite.
(5)Mairead N.
I can't wait to come back to Blackfish with just my guy and no one else. We came here on a hot summer evening in July on the recommendation of a bartender friend of ours who said it was well worth the visit, however, we had two sunkissed, tired and hungry kids in tow. This does not make for relaxing dining. Despite all that, we came anyway. Called at 4:30 to see if they could fit us in and they said they could, however, they were booked for the whole night. I had the soup of the day which was tomato based bisque, so delicious and my daughter ate most of it. The kids shared pasta and a burger. The burger was cooked to perfection and the meat, bun and toppings added to the delicious taste perfectly. The steak salad, my boyfriend said was delicious and I ordered crusted sole which was cooked to perfection with local vegetables. The decor and ambiance is really lovely and very welcoming with a hint of laid back hip vibe to it. In the back room it feels like you are in a greenhouse or under the sea or something. Very cosy and comfortable. I'd like to come back here on a winter night perhaps and sit back and relax and really take my time and enjoy the food and wine selection. I'm looking forward to my next visit.
(5)Evangeline L.
Stumbled across this place while looking for a decent meal after a lovely day of walking the wellfleet sanctuary (do it!). My bf and I couldn't have been happier as every dish was divine. We shared a bunch of apps and at least one bite of every dish, down to dessert, caused an elated happy mouth noise. Must try: Heirloom salad Mussels with cream and sausage Little necks with smokey broth (my fav) We discussed coming back this winter for a romantic dinner and quick trip because, well, we loved it. Good food on the cape can be difficult to find...go here.
(5)Kevin D.
Always one of our favorite Cape meals! This little gem is tucked away off the main road. Drinks, fried Oysters & cheesecake were a 10. The meals poached Lobster & panko Sole were even better! Service top notch. Love this place.
(5)Stephanie R.
Dined at Blackfish last night with my husband. The building itself is beautiful inside. Bar area is cozy, small bar with 7 or 8 seats, plus some booth seating. Main dining area has beautiful exposed beams and brick. Secondary dining area is mostly windows, greenhouse like. As other yelpers have mentioned it was very loud within, but the waitress did a great job making sure we could hear her and understood the specials she told us. After reading other reviews we were really looking forward to our meal at Blackfish, and the menu was extremely promising with fresh, local and organic ingredients. Unfortunately, the meal, although it had some highlights, fell short of our high expectations. We started with the fennel and carmelized onion tart with duck prosciutto. This was served with farmer's cheese and a light salad. A bite of the tart alone, was so-so, but when mixed with the other ingredients was quite tasty. We also tried the foie gras...I found it a bit heavier than others I've had, but my husband enjoyed it. The fruit compote served with it was quite tasty. For our entrees, I ordered the lobster with gnocchi and wild mushrooms. This was by far the highlight of the evening. It was absolutely delicious, melt in your mouth....My husband ordered the duck entree...Crispy skin on the outside, but the meat itself was very chewy and tough to cut Drinks were also disappointing! If I'm paying $12 for a martini, I expect some good stuff. My first order was the strawberry basil martini...it was refreshing with a strong basil taste, but besides from having a pinkish tint there was not even a hint of strawberry flavor. I ordered a cappuccino martini for my second drink...on the menu it said vodka, espresso, baileys, white godiva..it tasted like dirty dishwater...should have sent it back. For dessert we ordered the chocolate torte with pretzel crust. Again it was just so-so, nothing I'm dying to try again. Overall our experience at Blackfish was a dissapointing one. It tries hard to raise the bar for dining in the area, but their menu is largely a work of fiction, and fails to pack a punch.

I, once again, lost my will power. I promised myself never to mention "Blackfish" verbally or in print because I don't want everyone in the 'hood going there. However, the four of us (picky-picky) did not leave one speck of food or droplet of wine at our table. e.g. Butter-lobster-gnocchi (ka-pow)

This restaurant is lucky to get one star. The food is delicious -- no complaints about the food. But the service ... yikes! When my partner and I were there a couple of months ago, a man at the next table dropped his wine glass, which spilled and shattered down my legs and under our table. We caught the attention of the busboy, who came over and tried to clean it up, but he could not see so my partner took the flashlight out of the busboy's hand and showed the busboy that the glass was all around my feet. Not much was done after that, and I had to finish my dinner not knowing whether I was cut or stained. Our waitress did not come to check on us (surprise, as it took her over ten minutes to get our bottle of wine at the beginning of dinner and our appetizers came before our wine!). The manager was not alerted. Nobody cared, and I could have been BLEEDING! Furthermore, the tables were too close together for me to safely get out of my seat without 1) getting cut and 2) disturbing the table next to us. When my partner called the manager the next day, the manager acted like it was our fault. If you care about service, don't frequent this establishment.

Wow...amazing night. Very old historic building nestled in tiny charming Truro. Tight Parking for sure on a chilly fall night. Warm and welcoming staff, lovely and some funky fun art. Comfy seats and a very diverse creative menu. I had the tuna bolognese, my DSM had the veal, my bff had haddock and her hubby had the rib eye. Oh, we had two orders of golden beet salad with red beet carpaccio. First off, my massive Herradura Margarita was perfection. My DSM loved his dirty Kettle One Martini. Friend's hubby had a Hendrick's Gin and Tonic and BFF loved her Strawberry Martini. The food was great...friend's hubby did not LOVE LOVE his rib eye (tough) but the homemade potato chips (oh so garlicky) made up for it. We had wine, well selected from the waitress...I cannot recall the name of my Chenin Blanc (should write these details down) but it was perfect. I love this spot..indeed it's worth the ride and certainly one of Cape Cod's top dining spots.

Wonderful dinner. Pinko crusted cod and lobster gnocchi were the mains....great drinks and aware fun vibe.

Stunningly fantastic. We dined at Stars at Chatham Bars Inn last night and Blackfish tonight. The difference was night and day. Our meals at Blackfish were incredible from our first bites to our last. Buttermilk fried oysters were, we agreed, about the best oysters we've ever had. We found this to be our most special meal in a long, long time.

My top 3 favorite restaurants on Cape Cod are Blackfish, The Red Inn, and The Muse. If you don't mind leaving P-town, Blackfish is an amazing restaurant that you will love no matter what you order. Everything is fresh, organic, and local. The staff is super friendly and the environment is warm and relaxing.

Once again, we had a delicious dinner at Blackfish last night. Since I couldn't finish my tuna bolognese I took it home and just had it for breakfast--incredibly delicious!

Went there Friday night for dinner, my overall opinion was positive but a few things were "just ok". We started with the littlenecks in thyme broth with fingerlings and lardon. This dish seemed to be missing something, the overpowering flavor was pork fat. Could barely taste the sea. I had the tuna bolognese, which was very tasty, pasta cooked perfectly and an innovative way to prepare tuna. The lemon shreds (?) on top were perfectly matched. Again, the overpowering taste of pork (pancetta) and tomatoes overrode any taste of the sea, but it was still very much enjoyed. My date had the seared hake, this was a failure. The heavy crust on the fish rendered it almost inedible and was worse than your average beach shack fish. The fish was both overcooked and questionably seasoned, it tasted almost bitter. It was served on a semi bland barley risotto with meager traces of kale. She liked the small pieces of kale the best out of any part of that dish. I had questioned my dates motivations for the hake in the first place and we looked on jealously as the table next to us had what looked to be a delicious piece of striped bass. For dessert we got the chocolate silk tart, with pretzel crust and candied hazelnuts. This was great, beautifully plated and the perfect level of sweetness. However, the coffee that we were served was full of grounds, we were offered a replacement but were in a bit of a hurry, so we declined (also why we didn't send back the hake). Service was ok, with nary a smile, but at least they didn't rush us out of there, probably because we had an 8:45 PM reservation. My date actually liked the level of service "as they stayed out of the way". The ambiance was amazing, we had a corner table in the sunken back room, surrounded by plants and a nice table setting. All in all, pretty decent food, but with a few big stumbles. Will probably come back for the burgers and the scallop app (which everyone "in-the-know" seemed to be ordering).

Love it! The decor is high end seafood/nautical theme without an ounce of cheesy. The rooms have good acoustics, so even though the tables are fairly close to each other you wont have to strain to hear the rest of your party. The back room is lined with windows looking into various bushes, grass, and other greenery. It's truly beautiful and makes a great back drop for a lovely meal. Food is fantastic. Best I've ever had here was n heirloom tomato, mozzarella, and balsamic special - yum! Lobster gnocchi is delicious, as is the sole.
(5)Jerry M.
Very attentive staff, very cool atmosphere. Clean! (Bank of windows at ground level=spotless.) 7 people, $300 w/tip. A deal+. Everything was spot on. Just wonderful food. Great drinks. THIS PLACE IS A GEM!
(5)Zack G.
Food / menu: 5*, prices: 5*, uniqueness: 5*. What people could possibly have issues with: noise levels, staff / management not quite as "tight" as it could be, although everyone was very friendly.
(5)John B.
Excellent food. Interesting preparations. Excellent service. Great bar. Nice atmosphere. Pricey but comparable to other truly fine restaurants on the Cape. One of the highlights of our stay. My wife noted (accurately) that, for the Cape, the menu is a little light on seafood options. If you have kids, cautious eaters, or simply want to keep the total bill down, know that their burgers are exceptional.
(5)Janice A.
Attentive staff. Panko Crusted Sole highly recommended! Bar menu offers sazerac.

Our friends have been raving about blackfish. We went for dinner Friday night of Truro Treasures weekend. We started off with the scallop and pork belly apps- they were amazing. The dishes were so delicious and cooked to perfection. Then our dinner came, I ordered the yellowfin tuna special with grilled bok choy. It was horrible. The bok choy was not cooked, and the tuna was overcooked and tasteless. My wife ordered the duck appetizer. Another very bad dish. The duck was chewy, and the escorole was inedible. Total bummer. It was like someone who had never cooked took over after our first servings! We will try it again and hope it is not another dissappointment.

Have eaten here probably 10 times in three years and every meal has been outstanding. Service is also very good as well.
(5)Jonathan W.
Had dinner last nite with my mom, one of the best dining experiences ever. the tuna bolognese is awesome
(5)Todd B.
Truly outstanding food. Service polite, attentive but maybe a bit too efficient. Had the tuna bolognese - who would have thought - totally delish! Lobster and gnocchi were flavorful and light. Would highly recommend.

you little hidden gem you. take it from a local this place is a nice, relatively cheap, gloriously good place to eat. the food is scrumptious, the decor amazingly calm, but exciting at the same time. it has a bar at the front which is often empty but you can have your burger and drink there is you like. it has a large, expansive menu. Boyfriend got fish, i got steak... both were delightful and cooked to perfection. we got a ton of apps but i dont know what they were (cant remember, sorry) but everything hit the mark. local, often organic, and well made food all around. its definitely one of the calmer, romantic establishments on cape cod. but this is a thrilling change to the uptight places that are ALL over the place. Its relaxing. you take your time eating. the service is very attentive but gives you space to eat, and enjoy your company. make sure you take the addy and set your GPS, this one is hidden.

Wow, what to say about Blackfish. This is a favorite amongst my friends and I. The atmosphere is great, everyone is having a good time and the crowd is diverse and fun-loving. The food is delicious and the cocktails are unreal. My friends who have tried an array of wines from the wine list said that those were awesome as well. It isn't inexpensive, but it is so worth the money. The staff is special too and makes the upscale casual environment a unique one.
(5)Robert L.
Delicious food (steak, seafood), solid wine list, and outstanding staff. Best restaurant in Truro.
(5)Cate S.
Best bartender on the Cape. If you go sit at the bar when Mariah is working. She makes incredible fancy cocktails and her menu recommendations are on point. Also the garlic bread and hummus is incredible and she kept it coming.
(4)Alison E.
the more i dine out on cape cod, the more convinced i am that blackfish is the best fine dining experience around and so worth the drive. the surroundings, dining room (especially the back room with views of the garden) service and waitstaff are top notch and the food is just gorgeous. this is the one place where our friends from out of town are sure to be impressed and happy to have discovered somethg truly special. our favorite!
(5)Darren S.
Best restaurant on the cape.
(5)Teresa H.
We make it a rule to eat out just about every night while we're on the Cape. Because this spot is just around the corner from our house, it sees alot of us.... and it never disappoints. Over the course of the last week we had tuna nicose salad (with delicious oil cured tuna), an amazing lobster/lamb appetizer, mushroom pasta, heirloom tomato salad and the mussels, among other things. It was mostly amazing. The mushroom pasta was not my favorite, but shame on me for ordering a vegetarian dish in Cape Cod. Great wine list and consistently good service too.
(4)Arthur M.
What's better than super fresh fish and local produce... the salad I had was delicious, the fried local oysters were terrific, and the four women gambling on the Red Sox game at the bar were very charming! Except to folks who did not shut the door behind them.
(5)Peter K.
Went four times this summer still at the top of it's game. Great atmosphere and excellent food and service...
(5)Reed H.
Incredible food. We were 11, and everyone loved their dishes. Long wait to get in (3 days) but well worth it. Highlight was the fish stew.
(5)Bruce L.
There are a lot of great restaurants on Cape Cod. It's a great place for foodies. Blackfish is great for a number of things, particularly their fish dishes. But this review is about a great surprise. Who would've thought that the best burger in New England is available here. Unbelievably good with their sautéed onions and truffle sauce. Almost sorry to leave such a good review; t's already hard enough to get in during the Cape Cod summer season.
(5)Casey G.
My first trip to Blackfish was wonderful. Lovely ambience, very good food, pricey but worth it. I was adventurous and tried the porkbelly appetizer and it was phenomenal. For my entree, the panko crusted pan seared sole, was by no means bad but was rather boring. We were a sharing group so i tasted a few other dishes too. Though I agree that it's heavy for summertime, the rabbit ragu was extremely tasty, and the mussels appetizer was delicious as well. Great service (especially for a party of 7) and all round a nice fancy night out.
(4)Jaybird N.
Food was excellent. Everything was fresh as fresh can be. Bread freshly cooked and served with a simple hummus and oilve oil dip which is just simple enough to not be too overwhelming. The homemade pastas were great - sauces each had their own unique complexity of flavours. The tuna bolagnase had a wonderful hint of lemon and the tuna was extremely flavourful. Yum. I would have gladly given them a five but their dining area was uncomfortably hot and humid. They definitely need to invest in some air conditioners.

Might be the best fine-dining restaurant in Greater Provincetown. It's easy to bring low dining-out expectations to P'town and environs: I'm usually there to hang out with friends and barbecue and maybe steam a lobster or two. If you live in Boston, dining out at land's end seems kind of beside the point. But some local friends (I mean natives) who wanted to do a celebratory dinner dragged us here, and while the owners would probably wince at the phrase, I'll say "This is the kind of place that would do well in Boston's South End." Casual, cool atmosphere in an out-of-the-way location (a good 15-20 minute drive from Provincetown), a very solid wine list, enough craft beers to please my beer-snob friends. Mainly just terrific food. A good start with excellent chewy bread and a super-garlicky chickpea puree with very fine olive oil, not unlike what they serve at the Franklin (but with better lighting). Next is a superb cold pea soup, mostly a light, sea-green broth with a few whole fresh peas and subtle Indian spicing, just a marvel of freshest-possible-ingredients-of-the-moment and a bit of inventiveness. I could have had two of those, plus the bread and spread, and called it quits. A terrific little beet tartare salad, a dish that's increasingly difficult to transcend cliche with, but that succeeds beautifully here. Crazy-good linguine with many mushrooms, almost-insanely-great app of pork belly (three fat vertical slices on some little puddles of creamy polenta with a wondrous gravy, nearly as immobilizing as foie gras). I had many bites of other dishes I wish I'd taken carefuller notes on, like the burger, an odd thing to see on a menu this elegant, but damn, it was good. You might suspect me of giving this place some bonus cred for being on the Cape, but I can't apply the usual qualifiers: I really do think I'd give it some regular custom if it were in Boston. Very friendly, solicitous service and pretty fair prices didn't hurt. All in all, the best (and best value) dining-out surprise I've encountered in the last few summers in a vacation-oriented corner of New England.

Now, this is MY kind of restaurant! I love that at the top of the menu it says "eat local" That's a good place to start in my book! Of course they can't be sourcing everything from the Cape, but their hearts are in the right place, and that makes me very happy. I went with Anthony and two friends, and after looking the menu over we decided to do a sort of self-serve tasting with an assortment of starters and a couple of salads. That was a great idea, it turns out. We noticed that a few of the starters re-appeared on the entree menu (in larger portions, I can only assume) so we chose things that appealed to us, and ended up with a fairly good assortment. There is no question that the chef's palate determines this menu. He clearly likes strong flavors. The mussels are SMOKEY and the tuna on the nicoise (Bigeye, hopeful line caught) is OILY. No problem, he is talented, and pretty creative, and for the most part steering away from heavy fats and towards lighter flavors. We loved the beet carpaccio, the oddly shallot-free mignonette with the oysters, the deconstructed lamb with lavash and the wild mushrooms on homemade pasta. My friend and I thought the rabbit ragu (also on their excellent housemade pasta) was the crowning jewel, and we also appreciated the house-baked bread. One thing I found a little bit odd was that they had very few local, or even domestic beers, on the beer list, but it says "drink local" below it. I would suggest that they lay in a few of the excellent beers that are being brewed right here, on Cape Cod! We weren't crazy about the crowded, loud dining room, but the brightly lit greenery that grew all around the huge windows was stunning. Definitely worth the trip!

awesome food..great service...you must visit Blackfish when you are at the Cape you will not be disappointed!

PTown mussels!

All I can say is Crazy delicious. Had the scallops and Parmesan fondue, frisee salad with duck egg, tuna bolognese and lobster-pasta dish. Every thing was amazing. I live on Cape Cod and trust me dining options are limited at best. This is truly an excellent restaurant and I happily travel from Sandwich to get here. Definitely one of the top 3 restaurants on all of Cape Cod.
(5)David B.
I have eaten at the Blacfish several times and have always thought that it was an excellent restaurant. I went back there a few days ago. Again, the staff was quite nice and professional. While the salad I had was great the main course, haddock, was totally overcooked. I was surprise, given my previous experiences there, and dissapointed. The Blackfish is not cheap and.I expected better. I will likely go back since this may be a one time occurance.

Blackfish is the type of restaurant that really elicits a love/hate review, which to me is the most difficult one to write. If you don't consider yourself a foodie, go to Blackfish and you'll have a great time with a great meal. If you're a foodie, please continue to read.. Very good food that almost hits its potential. As you walk back to your car after the meal, you chat with the other people in your group and say, it was good....but there was something just OK... Our experiences: A staff that feels like it belongs in the local Chili's not in a finer dining establishment. If I was at Chili's, they would have been fine. So, I admit this upfront--my issues are on the picky side. I have a rule, when the meal breaks $100, I have the right to very good service. Below that, as long as its OK, that's fine. Dinner for 2 with wine and tip was $155....so here goes: *I watched the host walk 4 women behind us over to their tables, drop the menus, and just walk away. That was amateur and rude. *Our waiter had no finesse. He banged the wine around, dropped our entrée plates on the table with a thud. It wasn't that he was outright rude, it was just that he came to the table, we were uncomfortable and HE took away from the dinner. *We asked to be moved because as a 2 top, we were placed along a wall with 8 to one side, and 6 to the other. We couldn't hear each other, and felt like we were squished into other people's celebrations. The manager told us that our food was just about to come out, and if we wanted to move to the table for 2 that had just left by itself across the room, our food would be ruined. Not a I'm sorry there's a problem, how can I help you, just a bad attitude of "you're a problem customer, just eat your food." Now for the food: Apps and entrees were good! A pretty good wine list with a few interesting choices. We had the sticky toffee pudding dessert--not so good. In my opinion, there's really no AMAZING food in the Ptown area, so Blackfish is pretty good. They were VERY busy, with people waiting to sit until about 9:15 ish, so no matter what my picky opinion is they're making money. So in summation, its not a bad place, but lower your expectations from what you THINK you're going to get, and you'll be fine.

The food was really great, and certainly reasonably priced. Their beer selection was actually quite eclectic, which was another positive. They weren't able to seat us until 10 minutes past the time of our reservation, but maybe that wasn't their fault (then again, that's never happened to me...).
(4)Brian K.
The food is fabulous here. I had the frisee salad followed by the wild mushroom with tagliatelle while my husband had the golden beet borscht followed by the veal cheeks. All were excellent with the exception (minor) of the fried duck egg on the salad which was probably a few seconds overdone. Still, it was a delicious appetizer. The desserts were delicious too but my dark chocolate mousse was more like a ganache. Slightly too heavy for me after a substantial entree but delicious nevertheless. We will be dining here again ! They make excellent pasta! Bon Apetit!

There is something disappointing about walking into a half-full restaurant, with a reservation, and being seated at the worst table - especially when the space is so pretty and full of ambiance. We were seated at the table near the computer for waitstaff to enter their orders, and on the main thoroughfare into the restaurant for seating guests and for waitstaff between the computer and kitchen -- it was a bit hectic, and the lighting extremely poor (the waitress had to give us a mini flashlight to read the menu). We could see vacant two-tops, but the hostess wouldn't accommodate. (Why? Perhaps we should have been more assertive.) That being said, the food and the service were excellent, the food some of the best we have experienced at the Cape. My strawberry-basil-vodka martini was very good - the strawberry was subtle, not syrupy and cloying; the vodka and basil really came through. My seared scallops with Parmesan fondue were to die for - perfectly cooked, on a a swath of delicious Parmesan crema and garnished with crispy/chewy Parmesan tuiles. A memorable, perfect dish. My husband had the leek and goat cheese tartlet; it was very good, however, a bit too sweet due to the leeks and being finished with balsamic vinegar. Nevertheless, the puff pastry crust was crispy and the entire dish was very well executed. My husband had the special of braised shortribs served with kimchee and pork fried rice; it was exceptional; the meat was fork tender and not too fatty or dry; the spicy-salty kimchee cut the richness of the braised beef perfectly. I ordered a second app as my entree, the confited pork belly; it, too, was well executed, but was incredibly rich following the scallops. Not being able to pass up dessert... The chocolate pie with pretzel crust was delicious, but I couldn't finish that either. We had some lovely leftovers. I highly recommend -- just be sure to ask for a good table when making reservations.

We ventured out from Provincetown and what a big mistake! The appetizers were incorrect and were very salty - so disappointing! The main course came and four of the five came - we waited another 20 minutes for the fifth meal. The meals all were very disappointing and we would never recommend the restaurant... Stay in Provincetown!

I don't want to overplay this review as I've had some excellent meals here but a Tuesday night dinner earlier this month (august '11) was not one of them. It was such a let down, as I'd been looking forward to this occasion for months. A few top-line issues: First, the menu is very static, dominated by dishes that have been served for 2 years or more. Second, some of these dishes have no place on a summer menu: tuna bolognese (heavy), rabbit ragu (very heavy) and the like. Third, the array of specials is very limited (strange for high summer), no doubt due to issue #1. So, OK, lets try to find our way through the disappointing menu: Striped bass ceviche with home made tortilla chips, a tune nicoise salad (for me), oysters, a duck breast (my wife), a $15 burger (my daughter). The striped bass ceviche was hopelessly overcured, grey, lifeless, and unidentifiable as bass or even fish (could have been squid as far as I could tell). Overwhelmed by the cure mix. Compare this to the treatment of fresh fish at Sol (seenupdated review) or even Legal Seafoods (see new review). The Tuna was equally gray and sat on an inexplicable bed of heavily overdressed greens, odd little dots of olive, highly salted (processed) artichokes, and, happily, 6 perfectly cooked haricot vert. Oysters were fine with a nice mignonette. Duck was inedible, grizzly and nasty in a weird port reduction sauce (very old school and poorly done). The winner: the $15 dollar burger with house made potato chips. Conclusion: I'll be back in the fall for another shot in the quieter off-season, hoping to return to the top-tier restaurant that I once loved.

We had a very nice dinner here without the kids. We had made a reservation and were seated promptly. Every table was taken on a Wednesday night in July, which impressed me since this place is a pretty good size too. We started with an onion tart for my husband and the seared scallops for me. The scallops were very fresh and perfectly cooked but the parmesan sauce with them just didn't work for me. I don't tend to love seafood paired with cheese to begin with and this dish didn't convince me otherwise. My husband's tart was very tasty. My entree was pappardelle with wild mushrooms and he got the rabbit ragu. My pasta had a boatload of various yummy mushrooms on it and was absolutely delicious. I tried my husband's rabbit ragu and it was quite good too, although I wished we had ordered things that didn't taste quite so similar. I was too full to take more than a bite of my husband's blackberry bread pudding but thought it was excellent even though I'm not a big blackberry person. Service was friendly and attentive. I might have given five stars but the room was more than a bit stuffy on a fairly cool night. Not surprising, since the windows in the main dining area don't appear to open. I went here two years ago on a much hotter evening and I remember that we were just dying of heat. At these prices, I think this restaurant might consider putting in some air conditioning.
(4)Jessica I.
nice place, we went 3 times during our 10 days in the Cape. We took our (well behaved) 5 year old once and it was fine for a kid too. The fresh local fish was delicious. It does get really loud when this place starts filling up, also we went on a hot day and their 'air conditioning' is a joke (I didn't even realize they had any because it was so incredibly hot in the place!).
