Love this place! I've been a few times and each time is better than the last. I generally go during lunch as the dinner entrees are pricey. On my last visit I had the Haru Maki to start. Its a few little spring rolls sliced on the diagonal with a lovely dipping sauce. The taste of these little rolls is so mild, but very savory. I usually accompany my lunch with a Kirin (or two) I also got the tempura Bento box. It's a lot of food. My only complaint is the batter on the tempura is too panko-y. I like it a bit lighter. The decor is really nice as well. Very light and modern. The inside is much more spacious than it looks from the outside. I wish I lived closer because I'd be there all the time.

We've been getting takeout from Fugakyu for several years now, and I can say it's always a treat. My husband opts for one of their entrees and I opt for a combination of sushi rolls and sashimi, so we're both happy. Quality has always been consistent, no matter what we order. Service is prompt and attentive to their customers. We are definitely fans, and again, look to do takeout on those nights when we really want a dinner out, but have it in instead.

I'm not a huge fan of Japanese food, but my husband is so we eat here occasionally. The decor is fresh and light, the service is very good, and even the non-fan of Japanese food can find something to like. I usually get the teriyaki chicken. The vegetables are always fresh and the chicken is never dry. The wine selection is a little sparse, but they make up for that with amazing specialty cocktails. It's a little expensive, but well worth it. I highly recommend this place.

This is definitely a family-freindly Japanese. Awesome waitstaff..but food is just so-so. It is consistent..but not great. I do come here alot with kids..but when we're without them, we head to Oishi II (...which is much more refined..but also more expensive.)

this pleasant restaurant is in a small Shoppe plaza. The service is excellent, customers interesting and the food is good, across the board. If you are looking for someplace special to go for no reason, consider Fugakkyu - just to say you were there. And enjoy the fine service and quality traditional food.

When it comes to quaint sushi joints, so far, this is as good as it gets. The product is fresh and well presented. The service is very considerate. My wife and I are new to the area but have come here at least a couple times a month for lunch. The photos do not do it justice

We thought we had found one of the best Sushi Restaurants around in Northborough until friends turned us on to Fugakyu. We have be coming here ever since. The quality is excellent, prices more reasonable and the staff always very friendly. They remember our favorites and preferences and they are genuinely interested in assuring that we have thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I only wish we lived closer. I am so glad that I work in the area so we can take out when we like.

Imagine my delight when my 85 y.o. MIL picked FuGaKyu for our New Year's Day lunch spot. I've driven past a few times taking my MIL to doctor appointments and we always share a giggle about the restaurant name so she felt we owed them our patronage. I'm extremely picky about where I dine on "fresh seafood" and I'm thrilled to report that FuGaKyu delivered! My MIL and my SO both chose 'lunch box' specials that were STACKED with sushi, sashimi and tempura. I got carried away and ordered the Sashimi Special (I think it was called) and ate myself silly. The silken tofu appetizer we tried wasn't anything to write home about but, just like the seafood, it was super fresh! The seaweed salad was delicious as was the miso soup that was included with our meals. Stupidly, I chose a mai tai from the bar and, while palatable, it was boring. All three of us loved our meals and the cozy little booth-type area our table was situated in. The two ladies couldn't finish their lunch specials and had more than half packaged for take-home. Me? I stuffed myself! Highly recommended! And my mother-in-law mentioned that she'd choose FuGaKyu over The Wayside Inn any day of the week!

I've been to Fugakyu for a sit-down meal a few times, but I mostly pick up sushi to eat at home on Tuesday nights when I watch Deadliest Cat (how fitting!). Anyway, the fish is fresh. Super fresh. I always get the Rainbow Maki, some Sea Bass, and whatever that Red Clam is called. All of it is nice and tender (except for the clam because it's a clam) and doesn't taste fishy at all. I'm super picky and hate fake-ass crab, so I always request real snow crab meat. It's obviously a bit more $ but the taste is completely worth it. They also do brown rice!! The staff is always super nice and accommodating. The only downside is Fugakyu is a bit pricey. It's not something that will keep me from going there, but the rolls are a little small for what they cost. However, sashimi portions are a good size compared to the price. I got a big ol' pile of Sea Bass for not a lot of ca$h. FYI, while the restaurant says it's open starting late morning, the staff takes a break from around 2:30-4PM.

Came here on a Friday night with my dad, and after at least a decade of being open for business, it was a full house. The decor is warm and sophisticated, and there is a reasonable amount of space between tables so that you're not on top of another party of customers. The booths looked comfortable and private. The sushi was better than I'd remembered. We ordered a $48 boat, and the presentation was beautiful. The salmon sashimi was fatty and came in enormous chunks. (It was also nice that they give you a choice of regular or low-sodium soy sauce!) I ordered salmon roe, and again, the presentation was wonderful. The salmon roe itself was delicious. Our waiter could be a bit overbearing at times, but overall it was a good experience.

We had lunch here today and I was really pleased with it. Good layout, courteous and prompt service, and all of the food was delicious. I ordered the vegetable gyoza, the spicy tuna maki and the Idaho maki. My boyfriend ordered the maki lunch special. We both loved what we had. Can't wait to go back!

A rather random location, but some of the best sushi I've ever had -- including in New York and California. Incredibly fresh cuts of fish coupled with traditional ingredients (rice vinegar sticky rice, seaweed sprinkled on top) make it the perfect stop to curb your sushi craving. Please take note: SUSHI CRAVING. If you want more Americanized meals, probably best to move on elsewhere. Though I have enjoyed their salmon teriyaki (just sayin) Since it is a tad on the pricey side, the best time to go is lunch when you can take advantage of the many specials from $9 bento boxes to udon soup, a la carte sushi and more. The servers are also very sweet, but can be a little on the less attentive side so you have to keep an eye on them when you want more water. But all in all, for the beautiful rolls, sashimi and very fresh fish, this place is worth the drive!

Food is consistently fresh and delicious. I don't " love" the ambiance. Parking can be tricky. Tuna lovers tuna is the best!

When I lived in the area, I made it a point to visit this place at least once a month. What sets this place apart from all the rest is the fact that it feels authentic. From the decor, waiters, and food - this place is authentic. The food is spectacular - I find myself stuffing myself silly. Also, for a vegetarian, they do an excellent job pointing out what I can eat and what I cannot - additionally, if I want something that is a 'meaty' option; they have given me the option of replacing the meat with whatever substitute I want. Solid place. I would go here time and time again!

Fantastic food. Nice presentation, very fresh fish. Was there for lunch. Albert our server was wonderful and attentive. Found the prices a bet high. $5. for a beer at lunch time is a bet much. Place is very clean and the way the tables are you get privacy, that I like a lot. Great restaurant.

Sister (brother?) restaurant to the famous Brookline institution. Menu is 99% identical and the staff is 10x nicer. Decor is strikingly similar and although its significantly smaller than its sibling, its still decent sized and accomodating. Food is awesome. Guuuurl let me tell you the taste.... steamed gyoza, aspara gyu maki, chicken terryaki dinner, miso soup all awesome.....and I even had sushi which I dont normally do. The mango maki was a tasty delight and tasted fresh (although i'm no authority). The service is attentive and friendly.

We are sushi snobs and have eaten great sushi from San Fran to NY. Fugakyu in Sudbury is hands down our favorite. We are lucky to live close by and haunt the place about 1x every 6 or so weeks. Freshest sushi around and extensive menu. If you like Spicy Tuna rolls ask for "Snowing Roll' which is no longer on the menu but they will make it for you. Imagine Spicy Tuna roll with Spicy Tuna on the top and a sprinkling of that crunchy, sesame stuff. Veggie tempura app is delicate and tasty. RUN, don't walk, to Fugakyu! (Just be careful how you say the name....)

Fantastic sushi - the BEST I've had in many a year and reasonably priced. Outstanding service and very help answering questions. Well worth it; you will not be disappointed.

Foods subpar with really expensive price tags. No ones actually Japanese, foods never great, and I'm paying west coast prices for what, dog food! I'd rather go to super fusion in Watertown, 1/4 the price and just as good. I'm still wondering why people like this stuff, they must not know any better. Next time you're in there ask your server if he or she eats there :)

Fugakyu is great, one of the better restaurants you have to chose from when you are in Sudbury. They have loads of sushi and many other traditional Japanese dishes as well. The sushi is great at Fugakyu and they have a very large and wide array of rolls to choose from. I give the nod to Oishii sushi when it comes to just straight up sushi. However, with Fugakyu you also get other dishes that are not just sushi based. It is a great place to choose if some of your party wants sushi and some people don't. Fugakyu is worth checking out, you really can't go wrong.

One of my best friends and I have been coming here for lunch about once a month for YEARS. I have lost track of how many years. It isn't really near either of us anymore - probably about 45-60 minutes' drive... doesn't matter. The waiters are cheerful and prompt, the food is excellent, the atmosphere is pleasant. My friend has some dietary restrictions and the staff is always happy to find out what the ingredients are. I've also come here with a group (15 or so?) and the service and food were just as good as ever. The desserts are pretty clearly pre-made and frozen. I don't mind, because they're tasty anyhow... The problem is that we always have to ask "what are you out of this time?" and some days they're out of so many items that it's easier for them to list what little they do have left. But we usually find something we like, and I'm not going for Japanese food for dessert anyway. Important safety tip: the tea could be considered "lukewarm"... if you're on THE SUN. HOT HOT OW HOT. Approach freshly poured tea with caution and/or an ice cube. Not a complaint, just a warning!

Obviously since I check in here all the time we spend a good amount of time eating here, so I thought an update was in order. We mostly go for lunch and get the noodle bowls, which consist of choices of noodles, broth and side. I get the soba noodles with the soy sauce broth and vegetables. YUM!!! The bowls are huge and really filling, I can never finish the whole bowl. On occasion we also get some maki rolls, super Yum.

This was my first visit to the Sudbury location. I go to the Brookline restaurant fairly often. The sushi and cooked food in Sudbury are great. The menu is slightly different. No ankimo special or misoyaki appetizer, but they do have the unagi sandwich. We had dobin mushi, sake tataki, unagi sandwich and Fugakyu garden with fried tofu. For sashimi we had a range from toro to saba to ika. They were all fresh and tasty. Service was very attentive and informative. We went right after a snow storm, so parking was tough. We made our own space using all wheel drive and a little bit of shoveling.

Service was slow, food was ok. For the location and prices I expected a little better. You can get better sushi and cheaper prices at Fuji II down the road in Marlborough or just about anywhere else. Not saying it was bad but it could have been better.

Price, service, and quality all come together nicely at this Sudbury staple. I wouldn't call myself a sushi aficionado, but I know what I like and so does Fugakyu. The fish is unfailingly fresh, the spicy rolls are spot-on, and they generally cover all the bases with aplomb. When eating at the restaurant the staff are always polite and welcoming and the servers are helpful and attentive. Take out is excellent as well, and although they tended to be rather slow with takeout prep in the past, I've found that over the past six months the order is nearly always ready before I arrive for pick-up despite the fact that the restaurant is almost always busy. Prices are some of the most reasonable around for a sushi place, which sweetens the deal even further. If you're hankering for some raw fish give Fugakyu a try. It may not blow your mind, but I'll bet you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic sushi menu and, as far as I'm considered, the best sushi option in the area. Unagi is always my test for a sushi place and at Fugakyu it's never overly fishy and I NEVER question whether it's safe to eat. It can get very busy in the dining room, but I've never felt that we can't linger at the table for a leisurely meal.

I work equidistant from Fugakyu and Oishii. They are both great, but I keep going back for the lunch specials at Fugakyu. The Sumo Combo with Spicy Tuna Maki is my favorite, and the Miso soup is awesome. The staff is always super nice. I can't wait to go back.

For me, this happened to be the best sushi I've had in sometime. From Oishii in Boston, to Bizen in Great Barrington, and Baba and Haiku in between (Worcester). The freshness, the use of less rice, and unique maki made for an excellent time. We visited on a sleepy Saturday afternoon, it was quiet, but made for a relaxing experience. Everything we had was outstanding be sure to try something different - you'll be pleased.

I love sushi and I love quality. I have turned my nose up at some well-known Boston sushi restaurants because the quality isn't consistent. The first time I went to Fugakyu Cafe in Sudbury, I was hooked. The fish is fresh, the presentation is always lovely and the atmosphere is comfortable. The staff is friendly; I am welcomed by name when I walk in the door! You can't ask for better hospitality. I also frequent the Brookline location (my daughters study ballet in the area). The menus differ slightly; the Sudbury location has a more robust lunch special menu. The plus side for the Brookline location however, is the cozy tables where you can close the rice paper doors for privacy and the lovely koi pond inside. Both locations are great, but Sudbury is my favorite!

Decided to try this restaurant after hearing many positive reviews. Most of the things here were really good, others were decent, nothing was bad. Our table ordered several drinks, a few appetizers, sushi rolls, sashimi, udon soup, and fried ice cream for dessert. The appetizers and drinks came soon after we ordered them. The lychee martini was tasty. Some rare beef appetizer that we got was kind of bland. We then got our sushi. It was delicious. The fish was fresh, the rice was perfect, and the flavors were good. One huge issue I had, however, was that some people at the table ordered udon and ramen soup. None of the soups arrived until about 20 minutes after we started eating the sushi - leaving some people at the table sitting there to watch everyone else eat until their food came. When we finally got the soup, it was very salty, but not bad otherwise. The people in our party that ordered the fried ice cream dessert really loved the green tea. They weren't so much into the ginger ice cream. Lastly, they were pretty slow in bringing us the check. When we finally got it, it was a bit higher than we expected, but with all the alcohol, it made sense. Overall, this place was good, not as great as everyone was saying, but I'll definitely be back, since good sushi is hard to find here in the suburbs.

Sadly, after many great weekend lunches at Fugakyu, I had a very disappointing experience. On Saturday, October 17, my wife and I were enjoying buckwheat noodle soups--both with vegetables and tofu, my broth curry and hers miso. We also split our favorite salmon fried rice. She was about 2/3rds through her soup when she pulled out two pieces of plastic wrappers. I was hoping they were seaweed but no such luck. We showed them to the waiter who apologized and took them with him. After 5 or 10 minutes of awkward silence, the manager returned with another employee who said she searched the kitchen hoping it might have been a vegetable wrapper. She determined it was part of a cigarette pack wrapper. She said no one who works their smokes and again more awkwardness. She apologized a few times. I had a strange feeling she was feeling that we sabotaged the soup with our own cigarette wrappers. (Neither my wife nor I smoke. Also, we are honest people.) When the bill came, no sort of token discount. We love eating here, but as you can imagine, it will be hard to go back. Things happen, but the manager should have done a bit more to show us she wanted our continued business. Maybe I shouldn't feel this way, but it's how I feel.

I'm crazy about this place. I go every time I visit MA, and keep my fingers crossed that Eddie, my favorite server is working. I've tried every special roll on the menu- they are very creative. I've been here so many times that when I take big groups, my friends just default to me to order. 5 Star Favorites: Fuji Maki (with apple and sweet potato) Dancing Roll Tokyo Tower Maki Black Widow Maki Tuna Lovers Favorite Standbys: Cherry Blossom Spicy Girl Kirin Maki Kani Katsu Keep in mind that although there is another Fugakyu in Brookline, there are a few rolls you can only get in Sudbury including the Cherry Blossom and Fuji Maki. Must stop typing... my mouth is watering and I'm frustrated that I am in Maryland.

I knew they had one in brookline from a trip in a while back but I found this one in sudbury and not sure if the same owners but we decided to try it over the weekend. The place is not really big and parking was somewhat of a pain trying to squeeze around the back but eventually got something on the corner. The inside is nothing indicative of the small mall it is in and it was very classy. the menu was extensive and we tried an assortment of homemade rolls and the boat for 2. We were thoroughly stuffed and happy with the quiet dining experience and professional waitress. The presentation on the food was on par and if in the area, I'd even stop in for lunch. Will try and make it an outing when we get a chance to be in the area.

Okay, we always call this place the "F*** you" cafe" because none of us can say the name right, but it's with love. Love, I say! The food here is mostly standard upper-class Japanese fare, like any good Japanese place you would find in Boston or Cambridge. So if you are a city girl who misses the restaurants there, this is definitely the place for you. It's a bit pricey, but not too bad if you know what to buy. I love udon dishes, and you can do a "make it yourself" type noodle soup where you pick and choose your ingredients and they make it for you which is cheap(er). Their menu is HUGE and you will have to look at if for a long time. I know I do, I always want to order everything! Really though, you should go because of the staff. They are helpful and attentive and extremely personable. We've made friends with a couple of them and really enjoy it whenever we go, no matter who's there! Also, it's always super clean and the ambiance makes you feel like you really took that 18 hour flight to the Land of the Rising Sun! And they make a great scorpion bowl that come in a giant fishbowl too. Sluuuuuurp.

Wonderful service, great atmosphere, and amazing Saki! Our waiter "Ted" (you couldn't pronounce his real name) was terrific! He suggested a few Maki Rolls that were so fresh and interesting! I'm somewhat new to the sushi dining and this experience has gotten me craving more! I highly suggest it! Check out their website... very helpful.

Excellent sushi. Dining experience is superb in the small private tables near the entrance, not as good in the barn-like dining room in the back. Nice fresh fish and tempura. Must try -- saki sampler (three small 2oz portions of good/better/best sushi). Makes you really want to only drink the expensive stuff!!

  • Sam M.

Fugakyu is a solid choice for sushi in the metro west. The fish is fresh, they have (some) interesting rolls, and the service is quick and friendly. It also goes beyond sushi and has a pretty indepth Japanese menu (however, I can't vouch for that quality as I've only gone the raw fish route). The rolls will run you from $6/7 (straight up spicy tuna or something simple) to $13/14 (rolls topped with sahsimi and other delicious goodies) so it can get expensive. Despite the cost, what I think of when someone says "Fugakyu" is the sweet-tender-delicious Maguro Nigiri ($5 for 2 pieces). I've definitely had better sushi, but the fact of the matter is I usually walk out of here satisfied and you don't have to trek into the city. If it was a little better quality or a little cheaper I'd probably bump it to 5 stars.

This is the best place in metrowest to get sushi. Like it's sister restaurant in Brookline, the sushi is the best. It is pricey, but you get what you pay for. Lunch specials are great. Highly recommended!

Super fresh and well presented sushi. Make reservations when you can. Crowded on most nights because they are so good!!

  • Paul E.

Great Japanese restaurant in the Western Burbs: Food just as good as parent establishment in Brookline, but cheaper and more convenient. What i really like about this place is that it does way more than just Sushi, with a variety of cooked Japanese dishes. If all you have ever tried is Sushi, this is a great place to go to experiment. I love the kaiyaki hot appetizers and the fondue-like Nabemono hotpot dishes are great, but very filling.

This is a lovely restaurant with great service and an extensive menu with many choices for different tastes. Love their sushi, love their noodle bowls. They are great with kids too. My only complaint is that the prices are too high. So we go a lot less than we want to. And I am not looking for "cheap" food, just reasonable.

    (3)
  • Shanna R.

We've been here twice now for lunch, once with the little kids. We've been very happy with the quality and quantity of food (the lunch specials are pretty good) as well as the service. Although the place looks pretty nice at first glance, some areas are a little run-down (peeling wallpaper, etc) but in general we have been very happy. Our four-year-old gave the salmon maki a big thumbs up, which is huge as he's incredibly picky. For some reason he wouldn't eat the sushi at Lotus Blossom, so we're pleased we could find a place to satisfy his picky palate. The last time we were there I didn't love one of the rolls I got, but the fish was fine - the spicy mayo mixed with chopped tuna just wasn't my thing. Everything else has been really great.

BAKED SALMON SUSHI. go there for this and leave happy. (shocker that people found cigarrete wrappers in their soup!) I can't imagine what that was like.....)

For more mainsteam sushi, this place is great. Nice interior, very nice sushi chefs. Always good, solid sushi. Doesn't reach the heights of Oishii, but that's okay too. Not every meal needs to be high art. Prices are reasonable (cheap sushi? is that a good idea?). Good place to introduce people to sushi. I keep trying other places, but these 2 on Route 20 in Sudbury (how random is that?) never disappoint.

    (4)
  • Al N.

I am lucky to have 2 great sushi restaurants near me. Oishi is on and Fugakyu is the other. It is always good. Friendly staff and a great selection of cold sakes. I have dined a the Brookline restaurant as well, but when in metro west, this is one of the top restaurants. Try the White Caterpillar roll for something a bit different. It's also right near Victory Cigar so I can partake of a postprandial Padron and single malt scotch. What's not to like?

    (4)
  • Leo L.

Tried it again. Nice staff, though they got two orders wrong. Very kid friendly, though they didn't have crayons. Substantial and reasonable pork katsu, though the best is far juicier. Decent caterpillar and una avo maki, though the caterpillar had mayo and the una avo had slight hint of fishiness (the unwanted kind). Kind of the story of this place - not bad, but slightly off.

Wonderful Sushi!! Great Atmosphere!! This is Definately a great place for Sushi!!! A little pricey for the sushi but the rolls come out beautiful!! DEF worth the Art. They give you warm towels to clean your hands! Very Fresh seafood! So Good Go to Fugakyu!!

This is a follow up review to earlier very positive reviews of Fugakyu. It was, at one time, the best sushi one could find outside of Boston it seemed. I certainly liked it. But, like all restaurants, Fugakyu has lost its luster, having small portions of fish - very small - and a new higher priced menu. The wallpaper is stained, and the place needs a good cleaning. Also, the service has been spotty at times. I don't hate it, but Fuji not far to the West on Route 20 in Marlborough is now a much better deal.

    (2)
  • Danielle L.

Save gas and just go to the cafe. Located on Route 20 in Sudbury Fugakyu Cafe not only has a parking lot but you get the same menu as Fugakyu in Brookline. It does get busy some nights but most of the time you can walk right in and get a table. The food is fantastic and the quality is worth the money.

I love this place. The gyoza (Asian dumplings) are to die for, and so is the miso soup. It is also a pretty place, with all it's tapestries and everything. Friendly's is close by, so I know where I'm heading after lunch!

Nice place. great lunch box options. not just sushi or sashimi, you can get a hot japanese lunch which I prefer. very attentive staff. Only negative i would say is every time I have been there, it's been freezing cold. Find the thermostat please. Surprising because in Japan I found they kept everything way too hot for me. I guess utilities are just too expensive in Sudbury :) lol. Parking can be tight here.

My wife and I just returned from eating at your restaurant. We are not ones who usually complain, but our meal was very disappointing. My wife and I have been eating in Japanese restaurants in Boston and surrounding areas for more than 25 years. I lived in Japan for a while an also speak Japanese. Our meal cost us $95.00. You charged us $18. for four pieces of toro. This is not necessarily a problem but the toro was chewy and a little tough. This suggests that the toro was not as fresh as it should be for the price. Also the katsu kami was terrible. The crab was tasteless and the bed of parsley and cabbage that it rest on was wilted. The manager of the restaurant was unwilling to talk to us about our experience. This is unheard of for a decent restaurant, and for the cost of the meal. Our waiter disappeared on us as we experienced three different waiters throughout the evening. Our experience in your restaurant was so frustrating that we will not return and we will write a review on Yelp.

I have been going here for at least six years and it doesn't get any better than this! Not only is the sushi outstanding, but the staff is friendly and down-to-earth. If you are not a sushi lover, you can't go wrong with any other entrees. I have tried pretty much all of them. If you are craving an extraordinary Japanese restaurant, then this is the place! Do not look any further!

Awful Service and Overpriced food. I have been here a few times, I really wanted to like it, but alas that is just not possible. Every time I go in I am greeted by the same rude, condescending staff. They do not act like they appreciate your business. I figured one time it might have been someone having a bad day which I understand, but it is consistently rude and horrendous service. On top of that the food is mediocre at best and is extremely expensive for what it is. There are several other places that I would recommend to friends and family before Fugakyu. I strongly suggest you do not waste your time and your money going there. It is a shame because it is so close to my work place and I love sushi but I will not be wasting my money to be served mediocre food with such rude service.

I really like this place. Room is great, fish is excellent. A few interesting items on the menu, and a few interesting items on the menu beyond the usual suspects. Very good for the burbs. To be fair, fish is probably better at Oishii up the street, but it's like eating in a diner compared to Fugakyu.

Fresh, tasty sushi with a large menu. My only complaint is that the two times I have been there it has been extremely cold inside - ie bring a jacket. I last got the chirashi, which was a variety of raw fish on a bed of seasoned rice - delicious! The service is good, as is the warm house sake.

Overall a fantastic experience. I actually had my first piece of salmon sashimi here and was fresh and delicious! While it is located right on the main drag (rte 20 I think) it is defiantly in the Burbs. It was a Friday night and it was pretty packed but there was no wait. My biggest complaint was parking. We had to park in the next door complex and walk through some snow banks to get to the location. Over all a great experiences and will go back sometime soon.

Not bad, but I still prefer Oga's. Can't quite put my finger on why, but the dishes tasted more toward Chinese food than Japanese

Excellent traditional sushi. For appetizers I shared their Vegetable Tempura and Seaweed salad. The tempura was excellent. The batter very crisp and light. Not greasy. The salad had a lovely flavor and "snap". Very enjoyable. My dinning companions had the California roll and Gyoza. I tried the roll and it was what I expect of a California roll. I didn't have the Gyoza but they were reported to be very nice. My entrée was Ocean Spray Nigiri which is an assortment of traditional nigiri sushi which didn't include any of the choices I don't enjoy: Tako (octopus) and Uni (sea urchin). The sushi was what I consider to be excellent simple sushi. No special sauces or treatment. A proportionate ratio of very fresh fish on a very nice bed of rice. Wasabi where appropriate. Lovely. Kids had the teriyaki beef and chicken. Both were enjoyed. Both also came with a same side of vegetables that included broccoli, asparagus, pearl onions and a cherry tomato. These were also nice. I didn't try these myself but there were no leftovers. My wife enjoyed the Yosenabe. It was a huge portion, a large part of which came home with us. She considered it excellent and wouldn't hesitate to enjoy it again. I can recommend Fugakyu without reservation.

A solidly average sushi experience. And there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone says this is Metrowest's best, and that might be true. The makis are pretty standard, even though like most sushi places these days Fugakyu has some specialty rolls. Still, we were happy with our meal, the service, and the ambiance. Just nothin' out of the average big city ordinary.

My wife and I love this place. It's a good sushi place that is near where we live. I am not sure if this is connected with Fugakyu in Brookline which is FANTASTIC. The waitstaff is very friendly, the sushi is fresh, the prices are about right.

When I get home to Sudbury every now and again Fugakyu is ALWAYS on the list of restaurants that I want to go to. The people are so friendly, and some of them even remember me after long periods of time. The food is amazing and always comes out very quickly. They have the BEST spicy tuna that I've ever tasted. Nothing has even come close and I've eaten a lot of sushi! Love it!

Metro-West surburban sushi lovers rejoice! This smaller location of the top-notch Brookline establishment boasts the same menu and outstanding sushi as the mothership. The layout of the restaurant is not as cool as Brkline, but for lunch its a great spot: it's not very busy, the service is great and the ramen, man. the RAMEN! Awesome. I did drop it one star based on Erica C's assessment of Japanese sushi experts: my server this last itme was Chinese. You know, I saw Memoirs of a Geisha, I saw Snow Falling on Cedars...I can handle it, but when it comes to serving me sushi - NO SUBSTITUTION!!!

I've been at least a dozen times for lunch. The lunch box specials are always a hit with my group. There is enough to eat for most people. The fish is always fresh. I often get a sashimi combo with an extra maki roll to share with a friend. I can't speak for the rest of the menu. I've never heard a complaint. The maki selection is diverse and not over priced. You won't be leaving with an empty stomach and wallet.

There is a special place in my heart for Fugakyu. We get taken on a lot of Business lunches here and we have yet to have a less than perfect experience. The service is attentive and the food arrives quickly. They make a great Chicken Terriyaki, and the fish is always very fresh. The Miso soup and spicy tuna are also a must try. There tables are set up in a way that most are very private, and the prices are comparable to other local sushi restaurants.

Wonderful food. Great and fresh sushi! This is one of the two sushi places I frequent in Sudbury (Oishii Sushi 2 is located just down rte 20). I think both are a bit pricey, but the quality of the food is top-notch. I'm a snob when it comes to japanese restaurants not run by japanese people, but I think the food here is still great no matter who serves it.

I ordered sashimi, big mistake, not fresh, not edible. The hamachi kama wasn't fresh either. The tempura was greasy. Also, maybe it's is just me, but the waiters don't even speak Japanese. Gaijins don't make good sushi. Sorry but I'd never go back.

I decided to see for myself what the hype of this Japanese restaurant with the name that sounds very close to a swear (FUGA YU.) Think about it. Service on a Wednesday night was at a snail's pace, the place was pretty rockin' at 7, but when the food finally arrived, it was well worth the wait. The sushi was extremely fresh and well presented. The sashimi slices were generous and the appetizers were deliciously done right. Here's the catch though, the amazingly good food comes with bad news...the bill came to (cough cough) $130 and change for the two of us! Was it worth it? Yes. But not too often.....

Just returned home from eating a great dinner at Fugakyu. First off, usually I don't review somewhere directly after patronizing their establishment. Tonight I had no choice, the meal was so great. We ordered the Sushi Boat. This was more than enough for two people; miso soup was included. When the boat first arrived, judging based on physical appearance it seemed small. The boat was small; but there was so much sushi that two heavy eaters were unable to eat all of the sushi. The sushi was soo good that I almost could not stop; we left with a box filled with enough for a third meal. Great service; friendly waitstaff. No wait to be seated; nice TV's all of the booths are fairly private. Anyone can enjoy there own company here, the other people around you cannot really hear what your chatting about which is always nice.

Excellent sushi, best in the area. Always fresh, always well-presented. Service is excellent. In my opinion the prices are fair and reasonable for food of this quality and freshness, and you do get what you are paying for. If you care about the food (and to some extent the service and the environment), and aren't worried about silly stuff about "are they Japanese", you'll like it.

Having been to Fugakyu some time ago it was time to try it again. The restaurant was scheduled to open at noon on Sat. but opened late. I was asked to wait in the front as they were cleaning the restaurant. It maybe was 5 minutes. Several groups came in after me. After being seated I watched the waiter ignore me to wait on the table of 4, take their order and bring water. I motioned to him, he finally came over with a questioning look and asked if there was something I wanted. "yes" I said, "I would like to order" to which he responded " I will go get your waiter'. A few minutes later the very same waiter came to take my order. He seemed disoriented and very strange. Meanwhile four other tables had been served and attended to. I tried to use the restroom and that was also in the process of being cleaned. OK service is poor but on to the food! Excellent quality, interesting sushi creations, really loved it. So in conclusion I still rated Fugakyu four stars for some of the best sushi in the Greater Boston area. Just be prepared for some bizarre and really poor management decisions/service.

Every bit as good as the Coolidge Corner location, super fresh, super delicious every time. We love the warm scallop roll, and the salmon ALWAYS melts in your mouth. My favorite.

Been here couple times... I enjoy their sushi dishes, they're very well prepare. One of my favorite would be Spicy Tuna Handroll! Perfectly made. Their sukiyaki also very good.

  • Tiffany D.

I love it! While the wait after you order takes awhile the food is amazing, especially the special sushi maki's.. I adore the salmon lollipop appetizers (they have them as tuna lollipops on the menu but you can substitute) & I've tried pretty much each sushi item on the menu so far! Def. go if you haven't! It's smaller and more quaint then the one in Boston (which is also one of my favorites!!!)

We love Fugakyu! The sushi is the best and the service is always spot-on. We used to go to the Boston Fugakyu when we lived in town and when we moved to the area, knowing Fugakyu was down the street made the transition more palatable. The sushi is always fresh and the rolls always exceptionally prepared. We both eat in the restaurant and get take-out - probably once every one to two weeks. They know us, our kids and always treat us very well and it looks like they do the same with all of their loyal customers.

I've been there only a few times but have always gotten tough nori (seaweed paper) . I have enough sushi to know it should not be like that. The last time I was there I decided to say something so they would know. After spending $40...on my personnel meal they did nothing about it, and I had left behind strings of nori that I took from my mouth. ugh... Not even a offer of dessert...nothing. I can assure you I will not be returning, mostly because of the nori...but they also get an E for effort. Go to Oiishi...and be sure.

Delicious sushi. Asking their recommendation for what's fresh and in season is the way to go. It's not cheap but it's worth it.

  • Jennifer W.

I'm sad to say that this place has gone way downhill recently. The luncheon specials are nothing more than tiny slivers of hacked up left over fish on top of huge chunks of rice. Does it even count as Nigiri when it's 99% rice? The dinners are decent, but they're overpriced for what you get. And worst of all, they charge for tea!

Same delicious menu of Brookline house of Fugakyu but with a calmer less frantic atmosphere (no video screened walls). A plus is that they take reservations of any size (not that you really need them most of the time with the newer expansion). Service is always fast and friendly.

    (5)
  • Kate L.

For some reason this place is way less expensive than the Brookline location. And for the same quality food! The ambiance is not quite as nice but it's fast, with great service. Good soup. Great tempura, ahi, and cali rolls. Menu could be a little more adventurous i.e. mango etc. in their rolls. But overall a good place for sushi and I would not give 3 $$$, more like 2.

  • Rob L.

The fish was fresh, the service was good, but all of the food lacked flavor. I can appreciate the craftsmanship behind the sushi counter; all of the sushi was cut precisely and very pretty, the sushi rice had no vinegar at all. That is essential to the correct flavor balance. Perhaps this is an "Americanized" way to serve sushi, but it really kills the experience of eating it. Also, the shitake miso was clever, but the mushrooms were not cooked enough to release their wonderful flavor - again an insipid taste experience. I wanted to like Fugakyu, because they do a lot of things right. But sadly they let me down in the most important category: flavor. The search continues...

  • Diana L.

Last time I came here I vowed never again...damn, this place is overpriced! And the sushi is not that good. Also, we got the expensive deluxe sushi for two thing that they have there, and it was "chef's choice" -- it was a huge rip off for not only the amount of sushi served, but also the fish and shellfish they chose for the platter. I really almost complained to the management, I was utterly disappointed and underwhelmed. To the extent that I'll never be here again. Takara is better. Also the spicy tuna rolls here are all crunchies and they suck!!

One of my best friends for H2OTown moved to Sudbury and I made the trek with the family to go visit. Since my oldest was leaving to go back to college the next day, we let him choose the type of food for dinner and he went with what everyone likes in our household ... sushi. I have a favorite place in my town which gets rave review on Yelp too so my standards were a little high but this place rocked. Everything I tried was spot on. The appetizers were perfect and the sushi was spot on (even my favorite sweet potato tempura sushi was a hit). I was not in a major sushi mood so I got the bento box of chicken teriyaki. The sauce was good and not cloying. The chicken was tender and not dried out and probably got my sushi place beat. The prices were a bit higher than my place but we went for lunch and those prices were very reasonable ... Very pleased to have a place out this way to visit.

Amazing, really delicious. Great service, reasonable prices and very quick. Pretty place, too. I've been so many times, at least 30 times in the past four years I've lived in Sudbury and by far it is my favorite restaurant. Some of my favorite foods to order: - Bowl of noodles and steak - Gyoza - Teriyaki chicken I'm not a sushi person, but I always have many choices, too. It's a very good place for kids, too... The waiters are all very nice and one is very funny, too!

Fugakyu in Sudbury serves really fresh, hand-crafted sushi with some terrific personal touches on the makimono rolls. Our favorite is the spicy seafood miso soup, which we can't resist on a cold winter day. The customer service is great as well - our waitstaff remembers what we ordered last and always come with new recommendations to fit our tastes. Hands down, our favorite restaurant in Sudbury - sushi or otherwise.

Good sushi. Not my absolute favorite (like Feng Hudson or Oishii) but good sushi. Johnson L was a DELIGHTFUL server, and we went with one of his recommendations. I had never had a sushi roll with sweet potato in it - DELICIOUSLY crispy and creamy - sweet and savory in a roll. We ordered the duck tataki this time, and even though the duck was chewy, it didn't lack flavor - steep at $12.50 but had about 8 slices of rare, cold served duck that were very flavorful. Food does not lack flavor. Rice is cooked a bit on the wetter side, but I like that much more than dry hard "old" rice some other places in Worcester use. Noodle soups are flavorful and light despite how LARGE the serving!

**TAKE OUT REVIEW**** Because Super Fusion is so very far away, Fugakyu is my new go-to place out west. Had spicy tuna maki twice now. Second time around was a lot better and spicier (which I love). The original makes it with scallion on the outside, but I requested sesame 2nd time and liked it a lot better. Crazy Maki (shrimp tempura) was really tasty as was the mushroom maki. The person taking my order on the phone was so friendly, helpful and nice. The inside is super clean with a sushi bar that seats 4-6 people? and then there is a small seating area and one large open room. P.S. I like their to-go chopsticks! They're better than average ones you usually get at other places. Plus, they have low-sodium soy sauce!

Found a bone in our maki, first time ever! Management tried to make it right, replacement roll was inedible. After that management didn't even care. Quality seems to be going down. This was our go to place for good sushi, off the to find a new place.

A much larger space inside than what you would think from the outside. The menu was quite large and although I do eat sushi I was in the mood for some hot soup. I got a huge bowl of udon noodles in a flavorful broth called the FuGaKyu Noodle Special all for $14! I got the seafood and it came with quite the variety. The soft shell crab tempura was also really great. Mr. G got a dish which was surprisingly sweet. It was good for the first few bites but then became a little too much. The kids got the usual Calif roll, edamame and seaweed salad which were all good and gobbled up. I did find the overall prices a bit higher than I had expected but for those special occasions this was a nice find.

Was trememdously pleased with Fugakyu Cafe! We were trying to get into (the other very popular sushi place) for a rare evening out (baby), but struck out with seating. We drove down the road to try out the Cafe, and were initially put off by what looked like zero parking. The front was mobbed with cars. Kim ran in while I hovered, and came out with the news that there is no wait and tons of seating! Niiice. Managed to snag a parking spot (turns out there were more spots in the back, too), and we were seated immediately. The restaurant is huge - and roomy - not at all what I expected. Well lit and decor is somewhat reminiscent of their famous Brookline location. Service was top, top notch. Sushi was definitely very good. Not "the greatest" but much better than our local "all things Asian" restaurant. Nothing let us down, though the deep fried roll wasn't as exciting as I expected. Definitely on the short list of restaurants in the burbs for us now.

The Chicken Katsu is pretty good, although I've had better. My husband got the Kaiseki. It was massive. He said the sushi was very good, but the cooked portion of his meal was very diappointing. One item was thin beef filets rolled up with cream cheese and other ingredients. It was very oily and he thought bland. The worst though was the grilled lobster with avocado. My husband loves lobster, but he barely touched it. He said the lobster meat tasted old and had a slight smell. The decor is a bit dated. Overall, he was disappointed when he compared this location to the one in Brookline. We may go again, but no time soon.

The best sushi place in the area! My personal favorite rolls are the fugakyu maki, spicy girl maki, Black Forest maki, and snowing roll! The rolls have a lot of flavor and are interesting combinations. Request Albert as your server, he's the best! It's pricy but worth the money. Stop in if you're looking for some great sushi!!

When my fiance and I dine out, we almost exclusively eat sushi. We've eaten sushi in every state we've visited and frequently search for new restaurants where we live and we've moved around a lot. With that said, this is our favorite sushi restaurant. Their are many reasons. One, the quality of the fish. If you order the sasimi you will discover how fresh and clean it tastes and the cuts are always select and large. I highly recommend the scallop sashimi. Two, the texture and amount of rice covering the rolls. Most places skimp on the fish and overload their sushi rolls with rice and other fillers. Not the case here. Also, the rice is not too soggy or too hard. Lastly, they give you what you pay for. I hate when I order sushi rolls, especially eel rolls, and you can't see a large piece of whatever fish is inside. Here the eel is so fresh and tastes amazing. They put large cuts in the role so you can really experience the taste and texture of the fish inside. They also have great spicy mayo and green tea ice cream. Service is excellent and food is served in a timely manner. I also recommend the baked scallop role, but you can't go wrong! If what you're looking for in sushi is fresh quality cuts of fish and lots of it, you will be pleased.

The best sashimi (huge slices of salmon, yellowtail, tuna..and whatever else you like) and rolls (cherry blossom, spicy tuna, caterpillar) a gal could ask for. Sake and other drinks are always great. They have oysters on special sometimes -- order them! Love the fugyakyu salad with avocado. Make sure you order extra dressing on the side so you can drink it. Seriously -- it's so good. Also have lots of more adventurous items that are fun to try.

My friend and I love to meet up here for dinner. It is a beautiful restaurant where we can have a meal and chat. Getting good sushi anywhere can be difficult, so we are lucky to have a place in the 'burbs'. I also love their noodle soups. On a cold day, they are filling and perfect. The parking can be a little tight, but luckily I haven't had that much difficulty yet!

Lived in Sudbury for 2 years and finally got to try it Saturday for lunch. Loved it so much, I did take out today. I didn't find the prices too high. In fact, I found it to be the opposite. The rolls are bigger for starters... I did the same luncheon special 2x in row.... For $10, I got 3 rolls, miso soup and a salad. It's a deal in a half! This place is addictive because it is delcious!! I wish they would update the decor abit. When we sat down the previous visit, the wall paper was ripped. It wasn't a good first impression. Take the wallpaper down and paint it - easy fix. I'm hooked, and can't wait to go back!!
